| Cartel Part 2 The next day of shooting was the following Saturday, August 14th. Shot that day was the band's live stage performance. Filmed in St. Pat's (upon the same stage where Oedipus: A Context had been performed and the white room in Admonition had been constructed), the band performed all three songs four times, allowing for coverge from the left balcony, the right balcony, the auditorium itself, and some handheld stuff on stage (most of which Debbie filmed). Orignally, there were to be a few friends of the band in attendence to make it look on film like there was an audience, but Stephen decided that it would be better to have nobody there and simply not show anything off stage (although about twenty Spanish students did wander in and watch the goings on for a while, and for just a frame or two, they can be seen in one of the handheld shots). Also interesting to note is that all the materials on stage (the clock, the hanging designs etc) were provided and positioned by the band themselves, while the lighting setup was done by Debbie (although it is hard to see her work in the final version due to the tonal changes). The final day of the shoot was the following Saturday, August 15th. Due to the lack of their knowledge of the lyrics, coupled with the fact that they didn't know which song they were going to be cutting, Stephen and Debbie had decided to simply have the band walk around the Phoenix Park for a few hours and allow themselves be filmed doing nothing in particular. This could then be cut with the two interior sections to provide a fairly varied end product. So, the meeting was arranged for half one. Stephen and Debbie travelled together and found three of the band members there, but no lead singer. Nobody was worried just yet however as he was apparently always late. So one thirty becomes two o'clock, and Keith rings him. No problem, he thought we were meeting at two thirty, will be there in 15 minutes. By this stage, Stephen has started to film the goings on. So two o'clock becomes two thirty, which becomes three o'clock, and everybody is still sitting around waiting to get going. So Keith rings him again. Big problem, now he is in the local park in his housing estate! Keith explains that we are actually shooting in the Phoenix Park, not his local bloody football pitch. The team tell him to get the bus to the park and he will be there in 15 minutes. 30 minutes pass, no sign. So Keith rings him again, but he has a good reason for not turning up - he doesn't know where the Phoenix Park is!!! That's right, you take one of the world's smallest capital cities, you put Europe's largest enclosed park right in the middle of it, and this guy doesn't know where it is. That's like somebody who lives on O'Connell Street not knowng where the bloody GPO is!! So Keith looses his temper and tells the guy not to bother coming at this stage (the black and white shot of Keith looking angry whilst handing somebody a phone is the end of the saga), and that's why in all the exterior shots, there are only three members of a four piece band. Other points worth noting about the days shooting are that both the opening and closing shots of the video were filmed in the park (the closing shot being an angled silhouette of the park monument), the ECU of a finger is Stephen trying to get a speck of dirt off the lens, and a fleeting glimpse of Stephen himself was also recorded (he is wearing a 3/4 length leather coat and is being filmed from below and to his back left). So after a few hours work, and, it must be said, a pretty good day, Stephen called it a wrap. The video was finised shooting, now it was up to Debbie to edit it, but that's when the trouble really began, and this time, it was no laughing matter. Postproduction: So there it was, mid-August and the Cartel rushes were put on the shelf alongside the Admonition material, both awaiting editing, both gathering dust. The situation was quite simple; Debbie, who was a film student in Ballyfermot College, had assured the team from the get-go that the high-tech non-linear editing equipment in her college would be available for their usage immediately upon completing filming of Admonition. However, the academic year had ended without Admonition being edited, so the team was simply awaiting September until Debbie had access to the machines again. It was with the arrival of September, then October, November and December that the problems reached boiling point. on to Cartel page 3 back to products links page back to cartel page 1 back to home |
