Sib

(The Apple)

A film by Samira Makhmalbaf (Iran, 1997),

with Massoumeh Naderi, Zahra Naderi, Ghorbanali Naderi, Azizeh Mohamadi and Zahra Saghrisaz.

In a poor district of Teheran, a social worker investigates the case of a father who's locked up his two 9-year-old daughters at home for several years... What on earth could be his motives? And how come the family still looks so... close?

Sib is based on a real life story. 18-year old director, Samira Makhmalbaf, has successfully depicted a tragic story in a paradoxically light -and even funny- way, by focusing on the socio-cultural aspect of the plot: this is therefore not a story based on an emotional villain/victim pattern but a mere human slice of life in a particular setting that undoubtedly makes the saying "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" relevant... In short, this makes from Sib an unusual story in which tragedy and comedy are cleverly mingled to give us a subtle lesson of humanity. Do not miss this little cinematographic jewel!
