the zutons & the thrills
king tuts, june 20th 2003
On this rainy night in Glasgow you can't help but be overjoyed that The Zuton carnival has arrived in town, consider this dull evening brightened. Liverpool's sons (and daughter) of blues tinged psychedelia are back in town once again supporting the Thrills at King Tuts.

Those who had never heard of The Zutons before were won over by their terrific, energy packed set.  Second single "Creepin, An' A Crawlin'", offers a spooky insight into The Zuton world, "Remember Me" provokes some awful joke both on and off stage.  Thankfully comedic talent isn't what counts here, songs are and The Zutons have bundles of them, as "Ramblin' Man" proves turning out to be a fantastic lament about loneliness and isolation.

Set closer, "Zuton Fever", sees front man Dave McCabe preaching the Zuton word to newcomers, for which they should all be forever grateful. Whispers spread round the audience that The Zutons should be on the main stage a T in the Park.  Take the chance while you still can and see The Zutons up close and personal.
The Thrills take to the stage to spread their Beach Boys influenced, country infused Americana to the King Tuts crowd.  Greeted warmly, we soon see that they're about to be up staged by The Zutons once again.  Although most of the crowd don't seem to notice, and singles "One Horse Town", "Santa Cruz" and "Big Sur" all whip the crowd into a relative frenzy, The Thrills just aren't on top form tonight.  Their performance is distinctly lack lustre.  We get the impression that they are merely going through the motions, there is no real soul to what they are doing.  Credit where credits due, The Thrills are playing well, technically, it all feels very mechanical.

Perhaps its just the Glasgow rain?
