Heres the story of one of EWOs busiest nights of the year. Weve just witnessed true greatness, in the form of The Boggs and The Rapture at the QMU, before which we had to attend the DMX album playback that never was. Lucky escape. So were all in the mood for a party, as we headed down to The Lab, the nicely tucked away rehearsal studio where The Owsley Sunshine are holding their psychedelic party to celebrate the completion and release of their wonderful debut album, Look To The Merry-Go-Sun.
Arriving late due to some extremely slow walking companions EWO miss The Owsley Sunshines acid tinged power pop, but are reliably informed that they were on top form. But never fear, 10 minutes after our arrival those slow walkers are making their way to the stage, as were treated to a spontaneous and rare performance from another Glasgow based rocknroll band, The Gems. Although a little worse for wear (were impressed they can even keep hold of their instruments), The Gems put in a sterling 3 song performance including live favourite, Contact Everyone.
With the psychedelic raffle out the window, we get a taste of the psych DJs weve been promised, in the form of organiser and Owsley singer Joe Kane, bassist Neil Harris, Kev the Mod and Funhouse DJ Alpha The Hair Mitchell. By this point the evening begins to get a little bit hazy, as EWO allows itself to be taken wherever the night dictates, but we remember the outcome being one of a raving success, get your copy of Look To The Merry-Go-Sun from Start A Riot Records now, for a bargainous 5. |
