| Although essentially this, the debut from EWO's favourite bluesman, is a solo album it boasts an impressive list of guest musicians; all three Soledad Brothers, members of The Kills, The Von Bondies and Pearlene, and was produced by Jim Diamond and Liam Watson no less. But forget who else is involved, the most impressive musician is Mr David Viner himself. This heartbreaking album shows a young, talented, prodigal guitar player and vocalist at the very beginning of his career. "Mr David Viner", despite having the ability to convey sadness and pain so brilliantly (see his renditions of classics "Corrina, Corrina" and "Trouble in Mind"), is above all a feel good album which we are assured was a blast to make, as is illustrated with some of the albums most endearing moments, from the false start of the growling "Sally Jay" and the apparent party that surrounds "Monkey Rag". Viner has a great talent for telling stories through song. His drunken exploits have never been clearer than in "Beer Belly" where we're treated to the tales of a (one of many?) night on the tiles. More worrying is the topic of one of the albums stand out tracks, "Another Man", the story of Viners desire, jealousy, and revengeful murder. This is a stunningly mature debut from an artist we'll be sure to keep our eyes open for in the future. You'd be well advised to do the same. Order Mr David Viner here now.
