| Woodside Social Club aka The Woody - Former home to Figure 5/Sunstone Records 'Woodside Sessions', the Woody is working man's club, which has been taken over for club nights at the weekends. Superfly runs once a month featuring live bands, as does the National Pop Leauge and Caledonia Soul (website - www.moonsounds.co.uk/caledonia). Cheap bar, which is a big West End bonus. Address - 329 North Woodside Road, G20 6ND. Phone - 0141 337 1643 Nearest tube - Kelvinbridge ____________________________________________________________________________ Oran Mor - The recently converted church has been taken on as a regular venue for many-a PCL band of late. Despite the London worthy bar prices, its a fine venue, with good sound. Club nights at the venue usually mean an early curfew of 10pm which means theres plenty of time to get the tube back into town. Capacity - approx 500. Nearest tube - Hillhead. ____________________________________________________________________________ Brel - The Belgian mussel restuarant on Ashton Lane may not seem like a logical inclusion in our guide to Glasgow, but counting Jon of Raising Kain amoungst its former staff, that would be reason enough. In reality Brel has more to offer, with regular acoustic nights in the back of the restaurant, which have attracted the aforementioned Raising Kain on various ocassions, as well as the Glasgow Schmindie elite, including Snow Patrol and Astrid. Address - 39 Ashton Lane, G12 8SJ. Phone - 0141 342 4966 Nearest tube - Hillhead. Website - www.brelbarrestaurant.com ____________________________________________________________________________ Queen Margaret Union/QMU - One of two Glasgow Uni unions, the QMU's student population has attracted many fine touring bands, most famously including Nirvana, and used to house the NME tour (before the world went NME crazy). Not a bad venue as far as EWO is concerned, but opions differ. Avoid the club nights at all costs, JD & Coke is only 1 at 'Revolution', but its really not worth it. Address - 22 University Gardens, G12 8QN. Phone - 0141 339 9784. Capacity - approx 900. Nearest tube - Hillhead. Website - www.qmu.org.uk ____________________________________________________________________________ Stereo - A favourite amoungst the Art School mob, NME darlings Franz Ferdinand famously had a residency at Stereo, but don't let that put you off, theres no pretention involved. Stereo is a great venue, with a relaxed atmosphere and friendly (and always polite) staff. Plus, it was home to the very first EWO night, in July 2003. You'll find some great, if relatively uknown touring bands playing Stereo (Dexateens, Deadstring Brothers), with the odd slightly better known name thrown in for good measure (Peter Doherty), as well as the cream of local talent (Figure 5, Uncle John & Whitelock - whom Stereo have been firmly behind for a long time). There are some great regular nights too, such as All Tore Up, Dub and Grub, and the various Hijacked Records promotions. Address - 14 Kelvinhaugh Street, G3 8NU. Capacity - approx 100. Nearest tube - Kelvinhaugh (not all that near though). Website - www.stereomono.info ____________________________________________________________________________ Caledonia Institute Social Club - Another working mens club, the Caledonia Institute Social Club was the former home of the Buff Club (hence it also reguarly being referred to as 'the old Buff'). A new lease of life was brough about by Ian and Stacey's excellent El Rancho Relaxo in the summer of 2004, with a suitably relaxed mix of folk and country pop. Since then the rock'n'roll night 'All Tore Up' has graduated to the venue, with the mod night Friday Street also relocating there. The only downside is the 1am closing, with last entry at 10.30pm, due to licensing. They could do with putting some ladies toilets upstairs too. Address - Capacity - ____________________________________________________________________________ Nice'n'Sleazys - EWO's, and most of Glasgows for that matter, favourite venue. As the name suggests its a little sleazy, but lovely all the same. Downstairs is dark and dingy as a venue should be, with great sound and a brilliant atmosphere. We've hosted (10,000 Things/Raising Kain/Figure, The Hentchmen/Deadfly Buckowski/The Owsley Sunshine) and witnessed (Soledad Brothers/Mr David Viner/Pearlene, The Sights/The Needles) some amazing gigs at 'Sleazys. The bar upstairs has the best interior in town... despite the cracked paint. Great, cheap food and reasonably drinks, and a fine jukebox - the only place you'll find The Come Ons, but it's recently been marred by inclusion of The Killers. It can get a bit hot when its packed, and its a bit too close to the Garage (this can lead to ill-advised nights there), but really theres not much to fault. Address - 21 Sauchiehall Street, G2 3LG. Phone - 0141 333 9637. Capacity - approx 150 Website - www.nicensleazy.com ____________________________________________________________________________ King Tuts - Far less 'cool' than 'Sleazys, but a favourite all the same. Tuts is generally less crowded, and cooler (temprature-wise most of the time) than Sleazys, but great for a quiet drink and a game of pool. Theres a good juke box (10,000 things and brendan benson.. but a bit too much metal), and friendly staff (many of whom are in bands... The People, Julia 13), plus theres the added bonus of there always being loads of flyers/magazines to read if you're waiting for someone. When it comes to gigs, although its not always the local musicians first choice, King Tuts pull in great bands, perhaps helped by the fact its owned by the countrys largest promoters (DF Concerts). Oasis were famously discovered by Alan McGee in Tuts, but if we've managed to get over that I'm sure you can too. Over the past year Tuts has seen the now massive Kasabian, Zutons and Bees play many support slots as well as headline shows (watch out for Deltasonics Little Flames following suit), with EWO favourites 10,000 Things, Nic Armstrong, Duke Spirit and Soledad Brothers also doing the rounds, as well as 60s garage legends The Electric Prune, The Chocolate Watchband and Love . Address - 21 Sauchiehall Street, G2 3LG. Phone - 0141 333 9637. Capacity - approx 350. Website - www.kingtuts.co.uk ____________________________________________________________________________ Tom Tom - Coming soon. Address - 207 Bath Street, G2 4HZ. Phone - 0141 248 2123 ____________________________________________________________________________ Firewater - Owned by the same people who run Brunswick Cellars, and The Variety, Firewater is the more commercial choice of the three, sound tracked by classic and current 'indie'. Frequented by everyone at some point, from Bamboo-goers, people bordering on ned, as well as those of a Mod inclanation. Even more so than King Tuts, the bar staff is made up by many-a band member, with members of Figure 5, New Rosey Jewles, Multiplies and even Franz Ferdinand all currently, or previously, pulling the pints to name just a few. Cheap drink promos Sunday-Thursday, with live bands (of somewhat dubious quality) playing on Wednesdays. Address - 341 Sauchiehall Street, G2 3HW. Phone - 0141 332 3210. ____________________________________________________________________________ The Art School - Coming soon. Address - 167 Renfrew Street, G3 6RQ. Phone - 0141 353 4530 Website - www.theartschool.co.uk ____________________________________________________________________________ Brunswick Cellars - Ahhhh a regular haunt for EWO, Brunswick is pretty hard to fault. Dirt cheap from Sunday to Thursday, relaxed atmosphere (especially on Ska Sundays), friendly bar staff, a lovely fish tank and good music dependent on what night you're there, but with regular djs you can plan what to avoid (EWO choice - wednesday nights, with resident DJ 'Donnie' of Figure 5 'fame' playing a choice selection of psyche/garage/soul - but, be warned, watch out for the odd scary inclusion of Oasis now and again, and an ocasional Style Council songs). Local bands squeeze themselves in for free live sets on Monday nights as of a month or two ago. Downsides? It can get a bit warm when its packed, what with being a basement and all, and you've got to get there reasonably early on if you're after a table, people tend to stick around all night once they're in there. Address - 239 Sauchiehall Street, G2 3EX. Phone - 0141 3311820 ____________________________________________________________________________ The Universal - Coming Soon. Address - 57-59 Sauchiehall Lane, G2 4AB. Phone - 0141 332 8899 ____________________________________________________________________________ Bloc - Coming Soon. Address - Bath Street, G2 4HZ. Club at The Vale.... Whats that? You heard a rumour its coming back? So did we! Hooray! The Vale is a really (really, really) cheap pub, popular with train drivers, old men and Kain fans. Lovely staff with a good 'cheers' style atmosphere (well everyone knew our names), its dead central - directly across from Queen Street Station (hence the popularity with train drivers) - which makes it dead handy for barfly of a friday night. It should however come with a warning - very very hot. Do not enter without a fan in the summer. Address - 5-7 Dundas Stree, G1 2AH ____________________________________________________________________________ Barfly - Coming Soon Address - 260 Clyde Street, G1 4JH. Phone - 0141 221 0414 Capacity - Upstairs 100, Downstairs 250 Website - www.barflyclub.com/glasgow ____________________________________________________________________________ McChiills - You're pretty much guarenteed to find at least one member of Figure 5 propping up or working behind the bar in McChuills, thanks to that we're often treated to free Figure 5 gigs. McChuills is just on the edge of the Merchant City, not quite East End, so isn't as cheap as you might hope, but a good stop off on the way too or from the Barrowlands, or for one of the aforementioned free gigs. It's a bit of a mod hang out, which is reflected by the fact its the center of the Mod Weekender at the end of June, with the (amazing) Boogaloo Investigators taking up an afternoon residency on the 25th and 26th. Address - 40 High Street, G1 1NL. Phone - 0141 552 2135. ____________________________________________________________________________ 13th Note - Coming Soon Address - 50-60 King Street, G1 5QT.
