Movie Reviews
Grading Scale:
A range: excellent, probably will buy when it comes out on DVD (besides my 10 favorite, I'm going to put "National Treasure" in this category)
B range: pretty good, would rent it, watch it again, possibly buy it (example - "Unfaithful")
C range: average, would prefer not to watch again (example - "Sideways")
D range: not good, will tell people not to see it, won't be buying the DVD (example - "Spanglish")
F range: horrible, walk out during movie and demand refund (example - "Lost in Translation")
1. The Island: Starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson, it was a science-fiction movie about clones. I thought it was done extremely well, good story line and good action scenes. (B+)
2. Wedding Crashers: Starring Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn, it was a comedy about 2 single men whose lives changed forever when they crashed the wrong wedding. I thought it was very funny, a little long for a comedy, but overall a good movie. (B)
3. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: Starring Johnny Depp as the crazy Charlie who invites kids to tour his chocolate factory. Johnny Depp plays his character extremely well, and the storyline follows the book pretty closely, but the oompa loompa's are just weird. It's the same creepy guy repeated over and over and his singing was very annoying. (D)
4. Must Love Dogs: Starring Diane Lane and John Cusack who both are recently divorced and responding to each other's personal ad. In real life, Diane Lane is 40 years old and John Cusack is 41, but she just seems too old to play his love interest, I did not feel the chemistry at all, but the storyline was very cute. (B-)
5. Four Brothers: Starring Mark Wahlberg and Tyrese Gibson, four brothers unite after their mother gets murdered. I love the actors in this movie and the action is really good. The storyline has nice twists and the movie flew by, didn't drag at all. (B+)
6. Red Eye: Starring Rachel McAdams and Cillian Murphy, she is a prominent hotelier and he needs her to do him a favor otherwise he'll kill her dad. Almost the entire movie takes place on the plane, but the movie is only 1 hr 15 mins long so it didn't seem like they were on the plane forever. It had a good storyline and Rachel McAdams is awesome at every part she plays, great movie! (A-)
7. Dukes of Hazard: Starring Seann William Scott, Johnny Knoxville, and Jessica Simpson, all cousins who try to stop the mayor (Burt Reynolds) from turning their city into a mine. Jessica Simpson's acting was far from admirable but her only role was to get information from guys by using her body and she did a good job at that. Scott and Knoxville were pretty funny and the storyline was somewhat believeable but I think this is one that should've stayed as a TV show. (C+)
8. Crash: Starring Don Cheadle, Sandra Bullock, Matt Dillon, the movie is trying to portray how eveybody's life is connected and we don't even realize it. It definitely made me stop and think, it was very good. (B+)
9. The Brothers Grimm: Starring Matt Damon and Heath Ledger, these two brothers make a living by creating illusions in haunted towns until they run into a forest that is actually haunted. I believe I would've had nightmares if there hadn't been some humor. The storyline was kind of hard to follow, but I definitely jumped in my seat a couple of times. (D+)
10. 40-Year Old Virgin: Starring Steve Carell and Catherine Keener, he's never had sex before and she already has 3 kids when they meet so she doesn't want to mess the relationship up by having sex so they agree to not do it for 20 dates. It was pretty funny, but more raunchy than I expected, definitely not for your young teenagers. (B-)
11. Flightplan: Starring Jodie Foster and Peter Sarsgaard, she loses her daughter on a mid-atlantic flight and nobody believes that she was ever on the plane. Foster plays the distressed mother part to perfection but the plot was kind of weak and the storyline didn't get panned out real well. (C+)
12. Just Like Heaven: Starring Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo, she's a spirit living in his apartment because it used to be her apartment and together they try to find out what happened to her. It was kind of predictable, but the cutest love story I've seen in a really long time. It had a little bit of everything; humor and tears both and these two actors were perfect for these characters. (A-)
13. Proof: Starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Jake Gyllenhaal, her father (Anthony Hopkins) is a brilliant mathematician who is certifiably nuts - he spends his whole life trying to write a proof for a century old theorem. She worries that she some of tendencies and she does, but not the crazy ones, she's also a math genius. But after his death a notebook surfaces with the proof to this theorem and she can't remember who wrote it. Jake Gyllenhaal is not up to par in his role, and the movie didn't quite keep my attention, it was kind of boring and confusing. (C-)
14. Elizabethtown: Starring Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst, his father dies and meets her in the process and it's a very long, pointless movie. (D+)
15. North Country: Starring Charlize Theron, she's a female working in the predominantly male mining field. It's a true story about sexual harrassment and how the laws came into place, very well played out. (B+)
16. In Her Shoes: Starring Toni Collette and Cameron Diaz, two sisters who are complete opposites and how they get along, good story line. (B-)
17. Jarhead: Starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jamie Foxx, this is a story based on the Gulf War, from the viewpoint of snipers. For those of you that don't know, the Gulf War was mostly aerial so the guys on the ground had absolutely no action. The movie had its humorous moments and gave a good impression of how the military's time was wasted. Do not see this movie if you're looking for a war movie with actual battles. (B+)
18. Just Friends: Starring Ryan Reynolds and Amy Smart, they've been best friends since grade school but he's overweight and she just wants to be friends. So 10 years after high school he ends up back in town with a new body and tries to win her back. It was pretty corny, not that funny, and very predictable. (C-)
19. Pride and Prejudice: Starring Kiera Knightley and Matthew McFadyen, she belongs to a poor family who is putting all five of their daughters into society at once, and she is the second oldest who is expected to marry shortly. She turns down numerous offers because she wants to be in love with her husband. He is a cranky millionaire and somehow they grab each other's hearts, but there's a lot of obstacles to get through. Both actors do a stupendous job, and the movie is a must-see! (A-)
20. King Kong: Starring Naomi Watts and Jack Black, she's the main star in a movie he's producing on this supposed uninhabited island and while there she gets kidnapped and offered to King Kong and somehow they form a bond. The rest of the crew is trying to save her and the special effects during some of their scenes are the best I've ever seen, reminds me of Jurassic Park. Unfortunately I was stupid enough not to see it with someone that I could hold hands with and even though I say I would never grab onto somebody during a movie I probably would have in this movie if I had seen it with a certain person. Naomi Watts is beautiful and funny in this movie and it was pretty good. (A-)
21. Chronicles of Narnia: Starring I have no idea because there wasn't anybody famous, four kids are hiding from the adults in the house when they stumble upon a secret land hidden in the wardrobe. I think it's acted out pretty well and for the most part it's pretty similar to the book. (B-)
22. Fun with Dick and Jane: Starring Jim Carrey and Tea Leoni, he loses his job and they have to find creative ways to get money until they come up with this grand scheme to get the money back from his boss. It wasn't as goofy as some of Jim Carrey's movies, not his typical style, and the storyline was kind of blah. (C)
23. The Producers: Starring Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, and Uma Thurman, based on the broadway show which I've never seen, I'd have to say it was funny but I'm not quite sure if the casting was accurate. I like Broderick but I don't think he quite fit the role and there were several scenes that could've been edited out. It really didn't do anything for me. (C+)
24. Chicken Little: Animation about a little chicken who's trying to impress his father. Aliens end up in the movie and I was surprised about that, but it was very funny and pretty cute - not a waste of 81 minutes. (B)
25. Rumor Has It: Starring Jennifer Aniston and Kevin Costner, in his early years he slept with her grandmother and her mother and somehow she ends up sleeping with him too even though she's engaged to another (Mark Ruffalo). The storyline was a tad confusing and it seemed to be a spinoff of The Graduate, even though I've never seen it, and her fiance ended up taking her back anyway, stupid! (C-)
26. Family Stone: With a star studded cast including Sarah Jessica Parker, Dermot Mulroney, Rachel McAdams, Diane Keaton, Claire Danes, and Craig T Nelson, everybody did a really good job with their character but the storyline bothered me a bit; guy brings his girlfriend home to meet his family and then falls for her sister when she gets invited for support, very strange. But it's okay because the original girlfriend just gets involved with her ex-boyfriend's brother, and to top it all off, the mother is dying of breast cancer but it's not really part of the story. All in all, it had its humorous parts, but I'm glad I didn't pay for it. (C-)
27. Glory Road: Starring Josh Lucas, yummy! he's a basketball coach and recruits black players and starts them in an era where this isn't acceptable. This movie is actually based on a true story and they portray it very well; good story line. (B+)
28. Saw II: Starring Mark Wahlberg and nobody else famous except some of the people that were in the first one, this movie is extremely gruesome, but the story is played out very well and I did not figure it out. I can't wait for the third one! (B+)
29. Tristan and Isolde: Starring James Franco, this movie is about two families who are rivals, but somehow they meet and with him not knowing who she is, they fall in love. Then comes a battle where he ends up winning her for his king, who happens to be the man who raised him so now she has to marry him and they try to fight off their urges because it cannot be but they cannot resist and of course they get caught. It's a tragic love story, very good. (A-)
30. Brokeback Mountain: Starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, this movie is about 2 cowboys that herd sheep one summer and end up falling in love but in their era have to hide it from their families, so they both marry and we get to see their how their lives unfold with this hidden secret. I didn't feel the connection between these two, which you need - homosexual or not, so they didn't get me to care about whether or not they ended up together. (C-)
31. 16 Blocks: Starring Bruce Willis and Dante 'Mos Def' Smith, Bruce is a cop that's transporting a convict (Smith) from his cell to the courthouse for a testimony, which is only 16 blocks away, but they run into a little trouble on the way. A lot of it was predictable, but some of it I didn't expect; Bruce Willis was looking kind of old, but that could've been the storyline. (B-)
32. Inside Man: Starring Clive Owen, Denzel Washington, and Jodie Foster, Clive breaks into a bank and captures hostages and Denzel is the cop trying to negotiate with help from Foster. The storyline was decent but it was portrayed horribly, choppy scenes, out of order scenes, and it took way too long to tell the story. (C)
33. Failure to Launch: Starring Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker, his parents hire her to get him moved out of their house, and she falls in love with him, but then he finds out and gets upset. Everybody played their parts awesome, and it was funny, and sad, and just really good. (A-)
34. Firewall: Starring Harrison Ford, his family gets captured in their own home by people wanting him to help them steal money from his bank. The end was sort of unbelievable, but basically it was a good storyline with Harrison Ford doing a good job as always. (B+)
35. Lucky Number Slevin: Starring Josh Hartnett and Lucy Liu, he's mistaken for somebody else and bounced back and forth between two gang lords, Morgan Freeman and Ben Kingsley, each of them demanding deeds that shouldn't be done to pay them back for a supposed debt. During the movie, the plot was kind of confusing, we didn't have any idea what was going on, but then once it started coming together, it was a good storyline, and good acting. (B-)
36. ??
37. Ice Age 2: Starring all the animals from the first one, this time their home is melting and they have to move to drier ground and the mammoth meets a female mammoth and it's just very cute and funny. (A-)
38. United 93: Starring regular people, they're depicting the events from 9/11 when the plane crashed in the fields of Pennsylvania. The film was hard to follow, they kept cutting back and forth between the plane and all the various airports that were involved, but it definitely portrayed the heightened confusion that arose. (C)
39. Poseidon: Starring Matthew McConaughey, Emma Rossum, Kurt Russel, their cruise liner gets upended and it's a race to the "bottom" of the boat before it goes completely under. I thought it was very good, suspenseful with good acting, a little predictable at parts, but overall a good story line. (A-)
