Venice in May
This May break, we spent 3 nights in Venice.  We stayed in an apartment right near the Rialto bridge.  The apartment location worked great and ultimately was cheaper than paying for two hotel rooms every night.  Venice is *very* expensive, comparable to London.  But, it is quite unique.  Although Peter and I had been to Venice in the late '80's (BC - before children), it was great to come again and the girls really seemed to enjoy it.

We spent alot of time just walking around, taking in the views.  We managed to tour the Doge's Palace and and the Basilica San Marco.  Peter and I spent a few hours at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum while the girls went off shopping.  We rode up and down the Grand Canal on the water buses or vaporetti and visited the glass blowing island of Murano.

We had a horribly expensive coffee and ice cream on the Piazza San Marco and some pretty good italian food at various restaurants.  A note to future travellers, most Venice restaurants charge per person for the pleasure of just occupying space at a table, in addition to whatever you buy to eat.  On the Piazza that was 5 euros per person!

The girls fed the pigeons on the Piazza and we concluded our trip with a great gondola ride through big and small canals.

May is a wonderful time to visit Venice.  It is busy with tourists, but not too much.  The weather is nice, but not too hot.   And the canals don't yet smell from the heat of the summer.
