| October Trip to Egypt | |||||||||||
| This October, during the girls break, we took a trip to Egypt for 9 nights. My parents flew over from Florida to join us on this adventure. We had tried to plan a trip to Egypt last year, but I was too late in organizing the trip. So last year I started the process of researching various types of trips to Egypt. I spent a lot of time on the internet reviewing package tours, reading peoples reviews, and researching options. After much thought, I decided to use an agent here that specializes in working with Expats. This allowed us to hire private guides and drivers for much of the touring and tailor the trip exactly as we wanted. At some level, I felt travelling with private guides in private vans would be safer than travelling in large groups on buses. I don't know if this was a valid thought, but it worked out for us. Many people thought we were a bit crazy to go to Egypt. But I felt that if we didn't go now, who knows what the future will bring? We found the Egyptian people really wonderful. Everyone we dealt with was friendly and helpful. It was a great opportunity to learn more about the country and the Moslem people. Our guides and drivers were Moslem and Christian and the relations between people seemed quite good. Though Egypt is not immune to violence, the proliferation of the tourist police help to make it safe. Culturally, the hardest thing to adjust to was the constant need to tip everyone and anyone, hard because you are never sure what is appropriate. We spent most of our cash that we brought on this baksheesh, or tipping. We were very careful with what we ate and drank, having been warned not to drink any tap water. This held true for the entire trip. We drank only bottled water and even brushed our teeth with it. Fortunately, we did not have any serious illnesses. We spent 3 nights in Cairo, 3 nights on a Nile Cruise, and 3 nights on the Red Sea at a resort. You can read the travelogue for each part from here. |
