Winter Update |

School has been exceptionally busy this fall for the girls. Anna attended a 3 day school camp trip to Belgium this past September with her classmates. From all accounts it was alot of fun. Halloween was celebrated with a school party. The volunteer parents decorated the aula (ie. big room) with lots of imported decorations from America. The party is a combination disco/halloween games for the whole school. Kate and friends went as hippies, Anna and her friends went as the witch girls from "Charmed". |

Anna's class performed in the annual Year One's Circus. You might remember Kate's class did this last year. The circus was great with amazing face paints and costumes. The kids perform stunts in small groups, trapeze acrobats, trampoline tumbles, juggeling, dancing and other small acts. It is a real bonding experience for the class and they prepare for the circus, mostly in gym, for a few months. This year, the Spanish class got involved as well, performing a Spanish song and dance. Anna had me laughing as she whirled and wiggled during the dance. We had many parents comment on how much they enjoyed watching Anna perform as she gives her whole self into the act. |

The week after the cirucs, Kate and Anna both performed in the school play "Around the World in 80 Days". This production was much more professional than anything performed so far in the school. The girls had been in rehersals most days until 5:00 for a few months and in the end, were practicing full weekends as well. The school rented a stage, had costumes made, and formed an orchestra from students and teachers to create a wonderful finished performance. One of the great things about this school, being fairly small, is that you don't have to be "wonderful" to be involved. The lead actors/singers did really well, even without perfect voices. Some of the children involved were in the ESL program (English as a Second Language) and had just really begun to learn english.
Kate preformed as three main characters: Pam from Katy's Girls (Moulin Rouge dancers), one of Hitches wives (the Morman man with lots of wives), and a saloon girl dancer in the wild west. Anna was in lots of different scenes: a waitress at Moulin Rouge, the Dragon (hidden behind the mask) for the song "Sorry Dragon", and part of various crowd scenes, singing a small solo for the openning song.
There were two nights of performances with a cast party that lasted until midnight after the last performance on Tuesday night. I was concerned that the intensity of this show would put alot of the children off for performing in future shows, but my girls are already talking about auditioning for the spring show. |
