Veteran's Day

Veteran’s Day is celebrated on November 11th.  Originally it was known as Armistice Day and celebrated the ending of World War I in 1918.  Today, the name is Veteran's Day and it honors all of the men and woman who have fought for our country in all of the wars.  A veteran is a man or woman who has fought for our country and returned home.

The symbols of Veteran’s Day are similar to those of Memorial Day; however, Veteran's Day honors those who survived in the fight for our country.  Headstones symbolize the death of veterans who passed after their service.  Other symbols include flowers, the American flag, military medals, rifles, and pictures of soldiers.

People celebrate Veteran's Day with a day off work or school, flying the flag, visiting veterans and the gravesites of veterans who have died, listening to speeches and ceremonies commonly given around 11:00 am, observing a moment of silence, going to parades, and visiting the Vietnam Memorial in Washington D.C.
