Independence Day

Independence Day is also known as the Fourth of July because it is celebrated on July 4th.  The first Independence Day was observed on July 4, 1783, when the war for Independence was won.  People celebrated their freedom from British rule and the signing on the Declaration of Independence, which had been done back in 1776.

Originally, Independence Day was celebrated by ringing bells, lighting candles and fireworks, and firing the guns on ships.  Today, people celebrate by flying the flag; taking the day off work; gathering at family picnics or barbecues; lighting fireworks at home; going to see fireworks shows; wearing red, white, and blue; and attending festivals.

Some of the symbols for Independence Day are the American Flag, fireworks, the Liberty Bell, hats with red & white stripes and stars on a blue background, Uncle Sam, and the Statue of Liberty.
