Flag Day

The idea of having an American flag was first discussed on June 14, 1777.  The new flag would represent America’s break from British rule and its independence.  One hundred years later, in 1877, people celebrated the nation’s flag by flying it on every government building in the country, but it wasn't until 1893 that the first official Flag Day was celebrated.   The holiday is celebrated to honor the flag, a symbol of the United States of America and all the country means to people across the nation.

People have many traditions in celebrating Flag Day.  They say the Pledge of Allegiance; sing the National Anthem; fly the flag; give speeches; and wear red, white, and blue.  The main symbol of Flag Day is the American flag with 13 red stripes and fifty stars.  Other symbols include the original flag with only 13 stars and holding your right hand over your heart.
