Standard Book of Spells Grade 4

You have now reached the midway point in your studies of spells. From this point on the spells will become ones that you will use in everyday life. Ok we lie, there are a few fun spirited charms thrown in. But do not take these lightly. Everything you learn is fair game for your NEWTS and OWLS.

CHAPTER 1: AMOROUS

Don't go getting ideas. This is not some silly little love charm that will make someone fawn all over you for the rest of his or her life. So what does it do? Well, it does what it says; it's a love charm.

But it must be used with great caution. The spell, Amorous, will only last for a few short hours. And casting it upon someone who would not appreciate can lead to problems. Use it wisely; trust your judgment, unless it is poor.

CHAPTER 2: VERATRUCE

Have you ever seen advertisements that flash a variety of items? Muggles can do this mechanically, but their system is crude and inept. Wizards and witches can use a series of charms to bewitch signs to rotate images or words.

First, say with a pin, say the charm Veratruce, pronounced 'Vair-uh-truce'. The pin will heat up rapidly (suggested to not touch the pin at this point, unless you like being burned). Now speak the words you wish it to say. The pin will cool and those words will appear.

Now to have the pin say an alternate saying, speak the charm Proteist, pronounced 'Pro-tees'. Say the words you wish the pin to show. And again they will appear on the pin.

Now, to have the two sayings alternate say the charm, Verateist, pronounced 'Vair-uh-tees'. No doubt you will see the roots of this charm. If performed correctly, your pin will flash back and forth between the two phrases continuously.

CHAPTER 3: DICETONE

Generally a Point Me charm will suffice, but on those occasions where you wish to get down to the basics, conjuring a map is a perfect solution. Dicetone, pronounced 'Dix-eh-tone', will conjure a map of the entire planet.

You can reduce the depth of the map by using your wand to decrease the size of its focus. Just keep tapping your wand over the area you are in until you have reached the level you want.

CHAPTER 4: PUTTARAMUS

Puttaramus, pronounced 'Putt-uh-rame-us', is a crafty little charm that can be used to incite a snowball riot in the middle of August. As you've noticed with me, I enjoy throwing in a few 'fun' charms every now and then.

Puttaramus, as you should have realized by now, conjures up snowballs. These are weather hardy snowballs that will not melt, freeze, dirty, etc. Have a good time.

CHAPTER 5: STUNNING SPELL

Useful for knocking someone to his or her feet. This spell will not render a person unconscious. Merely it will incapacitate him or her. The charm is Assopher, pronounced 'Asss-so-fur'.

Do not expect the person you attack to be out of it for long. This spell will only knock a person off his or her feet for a few minutes at most.

CHAPTER 6: JELLY-LEGS

This is very similar to a charm you will learn later this term. However, it is not as serious. The Jelly-legs charm turns someone's legs into a rubbery material. Their bones are not affected; they just lack the power to manipulate them.

This charm, like a few others, requires no spoken words. Imagine the incantation 'Jelly-legs' in your mind. It is not the easiest charm to cast, as it is done internally. But, practice makes perfect.

CHAPTER 7: COLLETTO

Colletto, pronounced 'Cole-ett-toe', is a very difficult charm to cast. It is dangerous also, because it involves changing your physical makeup. That is, the makeup of your eye color.

Changing anything about yourself is always a daunting task. There are many things that can go wrong. It is suggested that you learn this spell backwards and forwards before attempting to perform it on yourself. Practice on a Salamidon, as their eyes can regenerate if you err.

CHAPTER 8: LERETES

At the end of this year you will learn how to deflect a spell or curse. For now, you will learn how to deflect an object. An object being something like a chair, a broomstick, and so on.

The spell is Leretes, pronounced 'Lare-uh-tess'. It can be used to deflect any size object up to and including one tonne.

CHAPTER 9: IMPEDIMENTA

Slightly different then the Leretes charm, Impedimenta is used to freeze an object in its place. It does not work on spells, unless they come in the solid form. That is, a Serpensortia charm could be frozen, as it is a snake that is produced by the wand.

Swish and flick will be the easiest method to use for this charm. Once cast, it will last up to twelve hours.

CHAPTER 10: ARACHNO

Arachno, pronounced 'Uh-rack-noh', is your best defensive spell against an overgrown spider, commonly known as an Acromantula (rated XXXXX by the M.O.M.). As you should be aware, the Acromantula is an eight-eyed spider that is able to speak.

The Arachno charm is most effective when shot at the underbelly of such a beast, where the hide is not as thick. If you look closely at Acromantulas, you will notice that their back and side is thick, hard, and hairy. This offers them an immense protection against simple charms.

Don't be tempted to use a stunning spell or stupefy charm on these beasts. You may receive this lesson again in your Defense Against the Dark Arts class. I teach it also because I feel it is important that you be learned in this particular charm.

CHAPTER 11: ACCIO

I do believe that this is the favorite charm of most students. Accio, pronounced 'Och-ee-oh', is used to summon objects to you. This charm rids a person of the need to bring everything they own everywhere with them.

I suggest practicing with pillows in your classroom. As they won't injure anyone if they go astray. Besides being a summoning charm, you can also use Accio to send something away from you. Practice this often, as it will be one of the most often charms you use.

CHAPTER 12: INVERTRESS

I had the misfortune of coming across this 'thing' when I was a novice wizard. I was in the woods and I crossed paths with this misty looking object. I thought it to be simply a peculiar fog that had settled over a single spot. I fear that I showed merely my naivety.

As I am sure you will experience in your class, this mist I came across causes one to experience a distorted sense of reality. That is, up is down and down is up. I feared that if I moved my feet I would fall to oblivion.

There are many ways to counteract this mysterious entity. I will teach you the charm that can be used. Invertress, pronounced 'In-vair-tress', can be directed at your feet and you will find your reality righted.

CHAPTER 13: INCENDIO

Incendio, pronounced 'In-send-ee-oh', is used to produce Floo Powder. As many of you know, floo powder is simply ash from an extinguished fire. To make floo powder, a charm must be added to these ashes.

Please note that the production of Floo powder is strictly controlled by the M.O.M. Anyone caught manufacturing Floo powder outside of the legalized industry is subject to imprisonment and/or fines.

Now to produce floo powder, with the ashes spread before you, raise your wand approximately five inches above the ashes. Say the charm Incendio as you move your wand across the ashes.

The final section of your year four studies will involve the art of Dueling. Basic spells and counter spells will be discussed and applied.

CHAPTER 14: WINGARDIUM LEVIOSA

Wingardium Leviosa can be used as more than a levitating charm. In fact, it is often used in duels to send a person flying and into a heavy object. It has the same effect as if you were to pick up a ball and throw it into the wall.

Highly effective, it can cause much pain. Especially if your victim hits the wall in a compromising way. This is a charm I recommend using during a duel.

CHAPTER 15: HASCHESS

Try casting a spell when you can't get a breath in edge wise. The inability to breathe makes the possibility of speaking practically impossible. The charm Haschess, pronounced 'Haht-chess', will perform such a feat.

CHAPTER 16: DESTASEMPRA

Even the greatest witch or wizard cannot cast a spell without the use of his/her hands. Destasempra, pronounced 'Dess-tuh-sem-pruh', removes all the bones from one's hands. Rendering them unable to hold a wand, and thus cast a spell. Be careful with this charm, as a miss could cause serious damage to your dueling partner. Imagine hitting their ribs and removing them all.

CHAPTER 17: ACCIO VOX

Another charm I am notorious for using. Accio Vox is taken from two spells. Accio, to receive something, and Vox, for voice. Thus, to take one's voice. It's not easy to cast during a duel, as your aim has to be true, precisely on one's voice box.

CHAPTER 18: SPINDELLA

Sometimes you come across an opponent that does not wish to abide by the customs of a duel. That is, they refuse to bow. There is a simple charm that can force this person to bow. It is not painful, merely humiliating, one could say.

Spindella, pronounced 'Spin-dell-ah', forces one's spine to bend in a bowing position. This person is still able to cast spells; so do not let your guard down.

CHAPTER 19: DEFLECTO

A key dueling charm to learn. Deflecto, pronounced 'De-fleck-toe', will deflect all MINOR spells cast at you. Key word, minor. Unforgivable curses, as I am sure you know, are unblockable.

Wiggle your wand in an elongated 'S' like pattern. Top to bottom, with a slight flare at the end. Your instructor can help illustrate my point to you. Practice with giggling charms or something of that magnitude. Do not practice with dangerous charms.

CHAPTER 20: PRIORI INCANTATEM

I had doubts as to whether this should be taught. But after much debate I elected to include it. The Priori Incantatem spell is one that can be used to prove a witch or wizard's innocence or guilt.

The purpose of this charm is to reveal the prior spells, curses, or hexes cast by another's wand. To perform this spell, hold the wand in question in one hand, and your own wand in the other. Allow the two wands to touch tips as you say the spell. In exact order of casting, the wand in question will reveal its prior spells.
