Moste Potente Potions

Most studies of potions bypass poisons. No matter what spin is placed on it, poisonous potions need to be studied. Ignorance is the downfall of any society. To not educate oneself on potions of a poisonous nature is to lower oneself to the level of a muggle. Muggles spend their entire existence denying the reality that is around them. Clearly by handling this book, you desire more of yourself. You have chosen to study a subject so deadly, and yet so fascinating. Poisonous Potions is meant for those of you with the wits to handle it. There is little doubt that if you are reading this today, that you are prepared to crawl into the recesses of death. To stare into the black whirlwind of a potion, brimming with danger and excitement, and to then stand triumphant. One step further towards a greatness many of your colleagues will never know.

Before our headlong journey into poisons and their application to potions begins, other, important matters must be discussed. Primarily, the methods by which poisons operate. There are four methods through which a poisonous potion, and all potions for that matter, can enter into a persons body.

The first method is Absorption. Absorbed potions, also known as contact poisons, enter the body via the skin or other external membranes. The most common contact poisons are powders, thick liquids, ointments or gels. These contact poisons can be applied to numerous types of surfaces, skin, handles, doors, weapons, furniture, and so on.

The second method is Ingestion. Ingested poisons are, as it sounds, ingested into the body. The main two avenues for such poisons are through foods or liquids. Imagine how easy it would be for someone to create a poisonous solution and mix it in with a Red Current Rum. Generally tasteless and odorless, they are undetectable to human senses.

The third method is Inhalation. Inhaled poisons are airborne toxins that enter the body via the respiratory system. With each breath you take, numerous chemicals and bacteria enter your body. These airborne toxins can be concealed in multiple fashions. Some are readily airborne, such as a disease is carried through the air by a cough or sneeze. Others are hidden within compartments, entering the atmosphere only when the compartment is opened.

The fourth method, and perhaps deadliest, is Intravenous. This is when a poison is administered directly into a persons vein, directly into the blood stream. This method is also known as mainlining. Intravenously administering a poison is not an easy approach. There are few people that are so daft as to allow a stranger, or a peer, to inject a poison directly into their bloodstream. If it were to happen, however, it would be extremely deadly.

Poisonous potions are separated into distinct categories. Each categories is identified by the incubation period and level of toxicity. An incubation period is the time from which a poison first appears in your body to the time where the poison makes its presence known and first symptoms are seen. Incubation periods can range anywhere from several minutes to several weeks. The toxicity of a plant or potion is determined by the amount of damage it can do. There are three levels of Toxicity that apply to plants, and therefore poisonous potions: Nontoxic, Toxic or Potentially Toxic, and Lethal.

Nontoxic plants are harmless to users. Potions created with such plants are safe to drink in any dose. However, when Nontoxic plants are combined with Toxic or Lethal plants, the effects are generally deadly.

Toxic or Potentially Toxic plants should be considered with caution. There are a wide variety of substances that cause ill effects to various organs. Toxicity can range from mild irritation to severe organ damage. Treatment for this type of poisoning is to rinse the mouth with fluids and then call your nearest Magical Poison Control Center.

The third group is that which is Lethal. These plants range from Monkshood and Wolfbane, to plants yet to be discovered by traveling witches and wizards. Their effects can be deadly, and generally are. When used in potions, they must be prepared in precise manners.

Now that your basic education of poisons is complete, it is time to begin. Poisonous potion will be dangerous. Those of you that are fools should be wary. There are many plants that can cause instantaneous death by a simple touch. The following potions will be broken down according to the following information:

Begin potion with six ounces of Venomous Tentacula venom. Take care ascertaining the venom. Allow the venom to reach a temperature of seventy-one degrees (must be precise!). Next add two balm leaves with the sap of a bracken fern. Step back from the potion as a large spout of potion will erupt upwards. There is a chance that the spray will fall upon areas outside the cauldron. Do not allow any of this solution to touch exposed skin. Catnip from the digestive track of any animal species must be added to the potion once the spout has subsided. The potion will now need to settle, off the flame, for seventy minutes. An entire geranium herb must now be added. Immediately return the potion to a low flame and allow it to simmer for thirty minutes. The last ingredient, Hemlock, must now be added. Best to use a transport charm to move the hemlock plant into the potion, as the potion will spittle outwards. Collect a small sample of the potion once it has settled.

Remove the lid and add Valerian to the potion. You will need to observe the solution. Once the Valerian is added, it will begin to wrap itself around the willow limb. When the willow limb is completely engulfed by the Valerian, add Abyssinian Shrivelfig. The Shrivelfig will begin absorbing water. Once the cauldron is half empty, add the Bundimun secretion. This will cause the Shrivelfig to stop absorbing water. A peculiar action will not take place. The Willow limb will begin to thrash until it has forced the Valerian off it. When the willow limb is free, add the Boneset. It is not uncommon for the potion to poof at this point. Allow to settle for fifteen minutes.
