5-10-01   Delta, Utah to Glenwood Springs, Col. Another beautiful ride, this time in Utah. Eroded red rocks in shapes unique to Utah. At least we saw nothing similar on our trip. So much to look at, had to stop several times. Road and weather were also great! Saw lots of trucks hauling something and older gentleman at gas station said they were hauling coal. Arrived at Grand Junction Harley shop, and Kirk took good care of us. He got my bikes oil changed and test drove it and fixed loose connection of turn signal for $43. Plus, called a friend in another shop to see about Steve getting his done. Got that done quickly, bought a shirt, and headed out. Almost forgot, had a great chocolate malt at the diner on site. Cool dealership. Beautiful riding on I70. Grand, sweeping turns up the mountains. Fun at 60! Colorado River kept us company most of the way. Saw a lot of kayakers.. Great weather again. But the chaps stayed on. And I had to layer up a lot, as I sorely missed my leather jacket. Sure glad I bought those hand warmers! Looked like rain as we were within 30 miles of Glenwood Springs. Big, wet-looking clouds, but we stayed dry. This is a real neat town. Had a great steak next door to the 1st Choice Inn where we stayed. Amtrak was running on tracks across the river from the road. Right on the side of a mountain! We thought that would be a neat train ride.(But the bikes are neater!)

5-11-01   Glenwood Springs to Walsenberg, Col.   More awesome Col. Scenery on I70. This has to be one of the prettiest interstates Ive ever seen! At least where we rode on it. Went to Brekenridge to do a little shopping. We found some goodies to bring home. 2 ladies in the shop where I bought Nitas goodie, told us of a nice way to get off the interstate and bypass Denver. It was 130mi. of mostly pasture land. Saw antelope(we think), buffalo, and camels, along with horses and cattle. Took a detour to check out Pikes Peak HD in Col. Springs, and bought Nita a shirt. This ride included another beautiful mountain pass ride. 11K ft. elevation! Then the pass dropped into the prairies. Saw Pikes Peak, but it looked pretty scrawny to a lot of the mountains wed seen. Then, we took I25 South. Dodged thunder storms again. Once again, Steve made the right call on the rainsuits....didnt need em. We stopped for a photo-0p and a lady asked if we wanted her to take our picture...and how nice it was to see father and son traveling together. We got a hoot out of that one! I think I was the father. Stopped in Walsenberg at dusk.
5-12-01   Walsenberg, Col. To Bowie, Tex.   Anxious to get home. Made almost 550 mi. today. Raton Pass was beautiful, but very cold! Its right at the N.M./Col. Border. We were riding through some big, dark, low clouds. Elevation here was only 8K. Ft. but it was really chilly. As we started descending, the sky grew brighter, and the air warmer. Easy, fast miles on 287. Rode till dusk and stayed in Bowie, Tex. Desk clerk told us a lame joke, then how to cook a lobster. I was way too pooped to care and walked off. Steve politely stayed and listened. Hed tell me(tomorrow) that now he knows I really AM biker trash!!  Well, duh!

5-13-01 Bowie, Tex. To home. A long day of pretty boring interstates but pumped up that wed be home soon! This has been an awesome ride. Over 6K mi. and almost all of them were great. What a great way to go west. The bike lets me feel the rise of our great land, as I head west from home. It lets us smell the sweet pine odor in the forest, the sagebrush in the desert. We can feel and smell the chill of the snow in the Sierras. An awesome ride! And that driveway at the house sure looked inviting!
Almost home, back to the sugar cane!
