| Western or Plains Hognose--(Heterodon nasicus nasicus) Length: Max 391/2 inches Diet: Amphibians, lizards, rodents, ground nesting birds, and even small turtles and fish. Range: Montana, North Dakota, Wyoming, South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa,Illinios, Missouri, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Canada (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba) Plains- 9 or more Azygous scales just behind the rostal Dark blotches from head to right above the cloaca: 35 + in Males and 40+ in fmales The Western (Plains) Hognose is the sub species most oftenly kept in captivity as it will take rodents as primary diet. It is fairly easy to breed and there are many color varients -both natural and captive types. |
