| These hognose are generally know scientific names and few common names except from the contries where they originate. I will attempt to give as much information as possible on the different species. Identification is another story all together and rather problematic due to the rarity of these snakes. Lystrophis dorbignyi Subspecies: Lystrophis dorbignyi chacoensis Lystrophis Dorbignyi orientalis Lystrophis dorbignyi uruguayensis Length: generally 24 to 36 inches Diet: small toads, frogs, insect larvae, fish and small lizards Habitat and defensive behavior is similar to the North American Hognose. Captive care is similar to the Western Hognose. Diet: amphibians and lizards Range: Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay ***************************************************** Lystrophis histricus-Bi Color (Red and Black) Length: generally 24 inches Diet:amphibians and lizards Range: Brazil and Uruguay ***************************************************** Lystrophis pulcher-Tri Color Length: generally 24 inches Diet: amphibians and lizards Range: Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay ****************************************************** Lystrophis nattereri (formerly natteri) Length: generally 24 inches Diet: amphibians and lizards Range: Brazil ****************************************************** Lystrophis matogrossensis Length: generally 24 inches Diet: amphibians and lizards Range: Brazil ****************************************************** Note: The Tri Colored Hoghnose that is bred in the country is more than likely by discription Lystrophis pulcher and not Lystrophis semicinctus.
