| SOUTH PHILADELPHIA: AUGUST 13, 2001---- Some of the Mummers' coustumes were damaged or destroyed by fire and water damage. Joe Buggey -- The Assistant Captain of Hog Island, which is the Fancy Division -- told Action News the outfits ranged in cost from $500 TO $1,500. Some were already being assembled for the 2002 parade. Others were from prior New Year celebrations, but still being used. The Hog Island clubhouse located at 3rd & Cantrell was struck by lightning on Friday afternoon. The bolt traveled through the corner of the building and seemed to hit Marguerite Kurczewski's (aka Marge Kelly) sidewalk across the street. Joe Buggey says it's sad to see the expensive brocade and gold lame outfits in ruins, but he said it could have been worse. Many of the costumes are stored in a recently rented garage space. Despite this setback, Buggey says Hog Island will be marching on January 1st. Buggey says some of the other Mummer organizations have already begun offering Hog Island storage space, sewing space and even costumes. |
