Social Studies
Our moms and dads helped us to write down our family trees and Mrs. Lundell wrote them all out very nicely into Family Trees that we could take home.  We learned that we all have very different families...and those of us that are cousins learned how to tell we are related!
We read the book Me on the Map, and learned all about how to read a map.  Then we made our own map books--from our bedrooms, houses and other maps, all the way out to the world map!
One of our teacher's friends brought in her hand-made Ukranian eggs to show us the form of art she does.  We read Rechenka's Eggs by Patricia Polacco and learned how layers of wax and dye make these eggs so beautiful.  We practiced coloring sheets just like the eggs, made our own egg using the wax and dye, and looked at all  the pretty eggs.  See this site about Ukranian eggs and the coloring sheets we did!

After the really sad day of September 11, 2001 we made this patriotic quilt to decorate our hallway.

We have first grade email pen pals in Houston, Texas. They mostly speak Spanish and live in a big city so we've learned a lot from them this year because their lives are very different than ours.  After we made our quilt, we sent this pattern to them and they made the quilts too!
