Montague Avenges Death; Slays Capulet
Verona, Italy, Monday – After witnessing the death of his closest friend, Romeo, son of the great Montague, has murdered Tybalt Capulet. The two fought in a duel, and with the strike of a sword, Tybalt fell to the ground.
The two opposing houses have been in a heated feud for as long as all the citizens of Verona can remember. This is not the first time that a death has come as a result of the fighting.
An eyewitnesses at the scene, who has chosen to remain anonymous, has said that the Capulet was killed after fleeing the scene of his own killing. The witness stated, "An envious thrust from Tybalt hit the life of stout Mercutio, and then Tybalt fled…was stout Tybalt slain [by Romeo]." This, the only witness that was willing to talk to authorities, has led the prince to believe that Romeo only killed to avenge his friends death.
Lady Capulet was the most disturbed by this occurrence. In an outrage, she screamed, "For blood of ours shed blood of Montague." Her demand for justice was quickly taken care of, as Prince Escalus stated Romeo’s punishment. He was to be banished immediately.
Many opinions were taken on the severity of the punishment. Lady Capulet was disappointed that the murderer was able to escape with such a light punishment, while Romeo was quote as saying, "Ha, banishment! Be merciful, say 'death'. For exile hath more terror in his look, much more than death. Do not say 'banishment'." Nevertheless, a punishment has been set and will not be reversed.
After the prince has repeatedly called for peace amongst the city, and even threatened the families with talks of executions, he has run out of ideas for ending the feuding. As nightfall sets in, the tension remains high in the city of Verona.
