Post Course
Reflection
At the
beginning of the course, I was unsure of my abilities as a creative writer. I
had always been strong with writing papers and reports, but when it came to
essays I struggled. My writing was grammatically correct but it tended to be
boring because it lacked the creative essence that all great essayists possess.
While creativity is still a weak point in my writing, I feel that this
expository writing class has made me much more comfortable with the writing of
an essay, and more specifically a college style essay. I feel that my strongest
essay was the most recent dealing with many pieces describing New York. I am
positive that this feeling comes from my overall comfort with writing creatively
after completing this course. I can only compare this situation to my football
playing experiences. I have been a wide receiver for my entire five year career
and am very comfortable at the position which is why I believe I am talented at
the position. On the other hand, I only began to play cornerback this year, and
although I am somewhat talented, I always feel uncomfortable, leading to my
belief that I am not fit to be playing the position. My weakest piece in my
opinion was my personal narrative, not coincidentally because it was my first
piece. I was generally unsure of my abilities and my topic. I focused so much
on completing the criteria of the essay that I could not truly enjoy the
writing process. I am very happy that I have taken this course because although
it was more work than many of the other English class options, I predict that
it will help me the most in both the near future and much further on in my
life.
