| King Cole Younger / Bradford Cox split 10" (Rob's House) As well as providing one number reminiscent of his Black Lips-dom, Cole gets noisy, samply, pschy, and just plain demented on his side, while Bradford's is more sombre, evoking a subtle Sebadoh / Dinosaur Jr, whilst presenting his own character. Haven't been able to stop playing it since I got it in. 6 BABY SHAKES - 'Shake! Shake!/Friday' 7" (Douchemaster) Fantastic poppy rock 'n' roll, played by 3 people who aren't men, and one who is, outta Atlanta, produced by a Carbona. Will have you singing along first time. 2.50 Babyshakes 'Stuck On Blue' 7" (Shit Sandwich) Another great 7" by these Atlanta scamps. The a-side is one of those raw-yet-sweet numbers that rocks hard enough to get your feet tapping, yet is catchy enough to have you singing along by the time you've gotten to the end of the song. The b-side is also good. Dave of the Carbonas plays traps on one side, making the affair tighter and more Ramonse-y, as you'd expect. 2.50 Bassholes 7” (SSLD) 3.50 BLACK JOE LOUIS & COOL BREEZE (SYA) 7" Black Joe Lewis is a young black gentleman who likes to scream blues-punk, with a whole ton of SOUL. 3 originals, and the best James Brown cover I've heard in a looooooooog time. Cool Breeze features Ed Miles, Walter Daniels (Oblivians, South Filthy etc.), and Darren Sluyter. 3 Black Lips 7" (Die Slaughterhaus) Early rawness from young men who make surprisingly good humous, and then do the washing up. 2.50 Black Lips 'Party at Rob's House 7" (Die Slaughterhaus) If you don't yet have 'Oh Katrina', you really should buy this repress, you big silly. 2.50 Blank-Its 7" (Contaminated) One of the best bands that were new to me at the 2005 Blackout. Smashing Transistors, they say'Mangled two finger chords...and a high strung backbeat. The Blank Its sound like some insurrectionists that stumbled into making off kilter splendor not by some calculated design but by bustling into it face first and not worrying about any consequences. Think of them as if the Urinals at their most agitated writing songs they'd like to hear the Monkees cover. Then take that idea, cram it into an empty Chef Boyardee Ravioli can and roll it down a hill into expressway traffic.' 2.50 Busy Signals 7" (Shit Sandwich) More ace buzzsaw pop featuring female vox and catchy songwriting talentz. 3 CANDY APPLE KILLINGS 'LEATHER FOR LIQUOR' 7" (SSLD) Debut vinyl for this Miss Alex Whites side and obscure project along with the now Victim of Time cats featuring 2 freaky, lysergic and alcoholic creaking garage tunes of nocturne smoky bad feelings. 2 editions: NO MANE I ED. (282 copies) and NO NAME II ED. (227 copies). Numbered with red ink stamp. NOT FOR THE PURIST OF SOUND. 3.50 CATHOLIC BOYS 'Actin Stupid' 7" (No Fuckin' Chance) 4 cuts of frenzied I-don't-know-what. You could call it high-energy punk rock, but that wouldn't cover the way these guys do their frenzied noisy stuff. A new LP by these guys could well be dynamite... 3.50 Cococoma 7" (Shit Sandwich) Eric Oblivian rather likes these Chicago-ites- 'The greatest band ever finally makes it to wax! Combining 60s-esque (think "Action Woman") guitar riffs with fearless drum/keyboard mayhem and fantastic chant/sung vocals, Cococoma tears apart the sky in a way that few bands have managed to do... ever.' 3 CPC GANGBANGS 'MECHANICAL MAN' 7" (SSLD) These Canadian fuckheads featuring Lyle Sheraton and Choyce spit out 2 pieces of real terrific badness and raw psycho yelling punk garage rock n roll. 2 editions: VICE GIRL ED. (262 copies), GROOVE-AND-TONGUE JOINT ED. (262 copies). Numbered with red ink stamp. 3.50 Creteens 7" (Contaminated) Raw and rather dirty Persuaders/Reatards-esque Parisian PUNK ROCK. Oblivians cover on there, too. 3 Digital Leather LP (Shattered) The best LP of the year. Dark, layered, and well-balanced with some slower-paced numbers, as well as the tracks that'l make you move. Lost Sounds covered 'Black Flowers' on their 'Future Touch' EP last year. 6 Feelers 7" (Contaminated) These guys were great at the days shows during the 2006 Blackout. Eric O sez...'FINALLY a recording that captures the fury and flash of the mighty FEELERS! Touring has tightened up what's always been a powerful, if sometimes scattered punk punch... yeah! Unfortunately, "Just Can't Get Enough" isn't the Depeche Mode song, but it's a boys-chant that you'll be screaming at walls, dogs, girls, and everything else. Recorded by Alicja Trout at Tronic Graveyard.' 3 Final Solutions 7" (Frick & Frack) The best punk rock band around at the moment? I think this may be the case. 4 Euro-punk oldies given that Memphis re-working- Vodad Kladsel Guitar, Kontracepcion, Pekinska Patka & Big Balls and the Great White Idiot. One left on orange. 4.50 |
