          -differentiate between two different cultures.

-discuss the daily activities of students in an inner city school in the Chicago area.

-relate their knowledge of different cultures to a story.

Description:  Students will become epals with third-grade students in an urban elementary school.  They will be asked to write their pals at least once a week and find out how their lives are different from ours.  They may ask questions regarding school atmosphere, things they do for fun, what they learn, etc…  After researching, the students will be ask to relate this knowledge to a book we will be reading in class called Gulliver by Jonathan Swift.

Choices:  Students are able to choose the type of questions they ask, when they talk to their epals, and how they relate their information to the story.

Relate:  Students are encouraged to relate the information they find to their own lives.  They are also asked to relate the boy’s life in Gulliver to their own.

Students will learn about other students who are the same age, but live in a completely different environment.  They will be learning about a different culture through the eyes of a peer.
