| HOLE LOAD OF TROUBLE AVELING & PORTER LTD 3936 : 1897 |
| At the time of writing there was only one known Aveling & Porter Portable Engine in the UK. There are however several others located around the world, one of which is pictured opposite. Located at the Tokomaru Steam Engine Museum in New Zealand this engine is also believed to be the one remaining example of Aveling & Porter Portable engine on the islands. The engine in question dates from 1897 and carries the works number of 3936. It was used in a sawmill in Geraldine on the South Island. The current owners procured it from Aveling & Barford in the Hutt Valley near Wellington, which is of course on the North Island. Here it was used in a metal pit. The owners have told 'Hole Load Of Trouble', that the engine is in considerably good order considering its age and that they would like to get it going agin in time, however other projects at the Museum are currently ahead of it. Our thanks to Esma Stevenson custodion of the engine, for filling in some of the missing details. |
