Fast Multipurpose Line Protector - SFP-1

Fast_fuse in hand

About the device in general

The main purpose of SFP-1 is to protect valuable electronic equipment from unwanted events coming from the supply circuit. Many problems can be avoided simply by installing SFP-1 between the electrical source and any electronic equipments. If your equipment has an extra battery or it is sensitive to high voltage, SFP-1 will be able to help.

Functioning

SFP-1 is built for 12V circuits (mainly car's equipment) but it can be easily adjusted to any low voltage equipment. It is sensing constantly the supply line and reacts in case of a danger (very high voltage, sparks, opposite polarity or short circuit).

In the case of a high voltage, SFP-1 will produce instantly a short-curcuit. This will occur strait after the convention glass fuse in order to protect the rest of the electronics. SFP-1 will disconnect the circuit by burning the fuse.

Applying only conventional fuse does not protect from overvoltage at all.

By the time the conventional fuse is burning (around 100ms depending on the energy released into the fuse described by the equation Q=I*I*R) the connected equipment will be dead. The approximate time for damaging the equipment this way is very unpredictable. It depends on many different parameters and it can be any thing between 20ns and seconds.

SFP-1 needs only few nanoseconds to react.

For example, in the car voltage can be 11.9 when your main battery is flat, 12.6 when your engine is running slow and 13.8 (+-0.5V) when the car is moving. If you have more than 14 Volts, it means there is a problem. In this case SFP-1 can be calibrated for 14 volts activation threshold. This (14 volts) is chosen because it never occurs in normal condition and at the same time is a save voltage for all the equipment.

Therefore, if the voltage exceeds this threshold for at least several nanoseconds SFP-1 will blow the conventional fuse, protecting all devices connected behind in the circuit. In case of a very high overvoltage the electronics in SFP-1 will not be able to resist and will burn itself protecting all electronics behind. In this case SFP-1 has to be replaced. This should not be a problem considering the low price of the device.
