Now I will tell you what I've done for you
50 thousands tears I've cried
Screaming, deceiving and bleeding for you
and you still wont hear me
Dont want your hand this time I'll save myself
Maybe I'll wake up for once
Not tormented daily defeated by you
Just when I thought I'd reached the bottom
I'm dying again
He never ever thought it would happen.
But it had, just like she had said it would. He had been put in a match against Goldberg with Steve Austin scripted in as special enforcer.
"Dont worry," Hunter had said in the locker room before the match. "Ric and I will be there for you."
"As will I."
The cool melodic tones of Lita's voice permeated the air around them, having different effects on all three men. Hunter cringed, racking his brain for a way to keep her backstage and away from harm. Ric rolled his eyes, ever since Hunter had decked him he had stayed clear of any confrontation involving the redhead, while Randy's eye's slanted, his brow furrowing as he stared straight at her as if he were trying to determine wether to trust her or not. He had avoided her the last few days, never allowing himself to be in the same room with her alone, he had to remember that he, Hunter, Ric and Batista had been a 'working' faction long before she arrived. But he still couldn't get what she had said to him out of his head.
'But in the meantime, while you wait for 'soon enough' to arrive... you protect Hunter from losing the gold instead... right?'
And indeed he had... time and time again.
Yet when the situation was changed did Hunter run down to ringside, did Hunter's actions do the words he had uttered back in the locker room justice?
NO.
While Ric was tied up with Stone Cold, Hunter had stayed up on the ramp wedged nicely between the RAW announcers.
He remembered looking up the ramp and seeing Hunter's astonished glare while he held the Championship belt snuggly over his shoulder and his eyes hardened when he saw Lita make her way through the curtain preparing to make her way down to ringisde when Hunter reached out grabbing her around the waist to pull her too his side, effectively halting her progress towards the ring, towards a win.
Goldberg had pinned him then, right at that moment and got the three count, plunging Randy's position down a rung on the championship contender ladder... dashing his hopes of making it to the number one contender position and his chance at a title shot.
I'm going under
Drowning in you
I'm falling forever
I've got to break through
I'm going under
That was it for him. That was when her words had rang true inside his head, he would never get a title shot at the championship belt... not when he, Lita and Ric were always there to make sure Hunter kept it... and as he just saw, Hunter was there to make sure none of them rose to a position to take it from him.
Blurring and stirring the truth and the lies
So I dont know whats real and what's not
Always confusing the thoughts in my head
So I cant trust myself anymore
I'm dying again
Long after the arena had been emptied of screaming fans, he sat out in the stands and watched as the cleaners went about clearing up the mess the twenty thousand or so people had left in their wake. He had purposely avoided going back to the locker room not wanting to see the look in Hunter's eyes, knowing the older man's gaze would dare him to challenge his actions down at ringside.
'You protect Hunter from losing the gold' Lita's words always came back to him, tormenting him with how much truth those seven words held.
Could he trust her?
Should he trust her?
After tonight she had way surpassed Hunter on his 'to trust' scale, only thing was he would be risking everything if he did what his mind was telling him to do.
He remembered the way she had sidled up against him when he had happened upon her alone in there locker room, how her touch had felt as she splayed her hand across his shoulders, how he had breathed in the smell of her body wash with a hint of something else that was exotically Lita. He had feigned indifference to her closeness but after she had left he released the breath he hadn't realised he'd been holding and with the newly indrawn air that filled his lungs came the understanding that she had known all along what effect she would have on him.
I'm going under
Drowning in you
I'm falling forever
I've got to break through
"I can do this." he whispered to himself as he got to his feet and made his way out of the stands and into the now desserted foyer. "I can do this."
So go on and scream
Scream at me I'm so far away
I wont be broken again
I've got to breath I cant keep going under
He walked through the hotel lobby towards the elevator intent on making it to his destination unseen, everybody would know soon enough of the thoughts that were racing through his mind but till then there was only one other person that could shed any light on his foreseeable future.
Litfing his hand he tapped gently on the closed door, not having to wait long before it opened and Lita stood there with a knowing smile on her pretty face. 'One would almost think she had expected this all along...' he thought as he stepped into the room. '...and maybe she had...' he quirked his eyebrow at her as she closed the door and motioned for him to take a seat.
Whatever the outcome of this little tryst, he knew there would be no turning back now.
The End
