MISCELLANEOUS * (2026/06/05) The drama master Chung King Fai recently passed away in his sleep. Only had the opportunity to get into the business when blessed with the grace of Chung King Fai, Chow Yu Fat thanked him for guidance, praised him for being a great instructor and general and he would be forever missed. Chung King Fai's disciple Gardner Tse Kwan Ho attended the worship ceremony for the premiere of the stage play "The Magic Hour" yesterday. When talking about his teacher he was teary eyed, saying that through the performance he would pay tribute to Chung King Fai. He would also follow his example, and teach students to pass on the experience. MIRROR member Anson Kong Yip Sun (AK) said that he was not uncertain about and had no comment on the dissolution of his teammate Stanley Yau Si Chun's fan club. Chung King Fai (King Sir) once in the interview revealed that when Chow Yun Fat registered for the TVB artist training class, because of his lack of understanding of drama, his dialogue delivery and other aspects of experience were also insufficient so he was not accepted. However he noticed Chow Yun Fat's size and superior conditions, thought he had potential, decided to give him the opportunity and achieved Chow Yun Fat's future performing arts journey. Chow Yun Fat spoke with "TVB Entertainment News" and talked about the past with Chung King Fai. "From entering the training class in 1973 to graduating in 74, we were under the guidance of King Sir for the whole year so we gradually understood drama. He is Mr. Nice Guy and a great teacher. Later when we came out to practice, we also worked on a lot of his work like playing a constable, internship on the stage play of "Qing Palace's Dream", to the later stage when we performed RUN FOR YOUR WIFE, King Sir was the director. I miss this good teacher, he is a good general. May King Sir have a safe journey, he will forever be missed!" Tse Kwan Ho yesterday with Eric Kot Man Fai, AK, Rosa Velasco (Wai Law Sha) and others attended the worship ceremony for the stage drama THE MAGIC HOUR at the Academy of Performing Arts to pray for 29 performances to be successful. Speaking of his mentor Chung King Fai, Tse Kwan Ho said that he was upset and very heartbroken, but knew that his mentor always had awe and respect for acting. Thus he also packed up his emotions to perform the stage play. He lamented that when he received the bad news, he was rehearsing backstage on the same stage of the first performance of his life, which King Sir directed. He felt that the world was full of wonders, his emotions were mixed and he wanted to pay tribute to him. Tse Kwan Ho said, "He taught me acting in the 1980s. He was the master of a generation in Hong Kong, a trailblazer of the stage, film and television who brought in many dramatic and modern performance methods. Without him there would be no (The Academy of) Performing Arts or TVB artist training class, which wouldn't be able to cultivate so many directors and actors of today. At class back then, King Sir frequently said that 'the actor's responsibility is not just acting, but actually often waiting; waiting more than acting! However, in the process of waiting we must continue to study and add value to ourselves.' He also taught us to be on time, and must be ready to perform anytime when the time came." Tse Kwan Ho noticed the tributes from the (Academy of) Performing Arts students, from which they shared that Chung King Fai used the words "Pretty Fun" to describe the experience of acting for many years. He felt very moved and said that his mentor looked at his work with an approachable attitude. As for unforgettable moments, Tse Kwan Ho and Chung King Fai were born on the same day (March 23rd). Every year he would "tag along" and cut the cake together to celebrate. "The last time I saw that he was very happy and spirited, so relaxed and at ease. He took a lot of photos. As soon as he talked about 'acting' his whole person would be alive again. King Sir would also pay attention to us students' performances, he would even notice the work I did in the mainland. He would have different views on each person and teach accordingly. He not only dedicated himself to the students about also to the performing arts community. A teacher like him would be hard to come by. I have been very lucky to be able to learn a lot and put them in my pocket. I teach students to share their experiences, pass them on to the next generation, and follow the example of King Sir." Tse Kwan Ho said that if Chung King Fai's family has any need, he and his classmates would be willing to help; but for the time being, the funeral arrangements of his teacher remained unknown. Even if they would be on the days of his performance, he would still make time to attend and pay his respect. Wai Law Sha and AK revealed that the stage had a large-scale contraption and action scene. For the first night of the performance they would inevitably be a little nervous, but believed that everyone would put safety first. AK said, "For a concert I usually rise from under the stage, but this time for the stage contraption I would descend from above. Some dangerous stunts would be left to the professional stunt team." In the play AK and Wai Law Sha would play an ambiguous romance. He was a little shy at first, but she took a bold step, touched his face and grabbed him by the waist. With the interaction between them and the rehearsals they started to become familiar and hoped that they would have a chemical reaction this time. Therefore during the performance they no longer showed any embarrassment. Referring to the sudden dissolution of MIRROR teammate Stanley Yau Si Chun's fan club and Edan Lui Cheuk On's "Haters theory" that has upset fans, AK said he only paid attention to the performance of the Yau Si Chun starred drama "COURT!". Coupled with focusing on the preparation of the stage recently, he has not paid attention to too many reports. He was uncertain about the incident so he was not at liberty to comment. "They are big boys, I believe that they will deal with it themselves." Wai Law Sha was not worried about co-star Kot Man Fai's "improvisation" during the performance, saying that during interviews normally he seemed to have "gone to space", but when the rehearsal and performance, he would be very professional and follow the script exactly. In addition the script was an adaptation so he would not be arbitrarily modified it. Started in the Academy of Performing Arts, Wai Law Sha said that when she was studying Chung King Fai was no longer teaching. She was unable to have the opportunity to communicate with him, and unfortunately she did not have the opportunity to work with him. She was heartbroken by the passing of Chung King Fai, praised him for his great contribution to the Hong Kong show business community, and put a lot of love and effort into drama. She thanked this senior for everything he has done, without him she would not be standing here today. * (2026/06/04) The Drama King Chung King Fai (King Sir) passed away in his sleep yesterday at the age of 89. He has devoted more than half a century to show business, dedicated his life to drama, dabbled in stage dramas, television and film, served as the management of the television station, and promoted drama education. From being the trailblazing founder of the TVB artist training class to the founding director of the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, he had countless students and was the benefactor of many on and off camera. They included Chow Yun Fat, who originally was not able to enter the artist training class. Chung King Fai caught his potential and decided to accept him. Angelina Lo Yuen Yen was a student of the 2nd TVB Training Class student and a student of Chung King Fai. Originally she planned to visit her mentor with other classmates, but she did not expect to receive the news of King Sir's passing and hence regretted not being able to see him for the last time. Louisa Lee Sze Kee has worked with Chung King Fai on television and stage drama, praised her colleague as a "true drama master". Meeting him was the greatest gain in her performing art career. In 2016 King Sir was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, his health started to deteriorate so he rarely appeared in public. His nephew Chung Chi Kuen announced the news of his passing. "It is with great sorrow that I hereby announce to everyone that my uncle Chung King Fai passed away peacefully in his sleep at home this morning. Uncle dedicated his life to drama, with students everywhere. We deeply understand everyone's respect and love for him. Thank you everyone for your concern and company for him. Currently we as his family is working on handling Uncle's funeral, of which once the details are confirmed we would make an announcement to everyone!" Chung King Fai was a Chinese Thai, his family originated from Taishan, Guangdong. Never married, he was only linked in rumors with So Hang Shuen. He started participating in school dramas since his second year in secondary school. In 1958 he went to the U.S. to study drama, after graduating from Yale University drama school with master of art degree he returned to Hong Kong and once taught at the Baptist University. In 1967 he started working at TVB, during which he suggested starting an artist training class and cultivated a large group of film and television talent including Chow Yun Fat and Ringo Lam Lan Tung. Reportedly back then when Chow Yun Fat registered for the artist training class he was not accepted, but Chung King Fai had a sharp eye. "I felt Chow Yun Fat had a good look and potential, so I gave him a chance." He was even the Academy of Performing Arts drama school's founding director. In his 17 year term he was connected to Gardner Tse Kwan Ho, Louisa So Yuk Wah, Poon Chan Leung, Alice Lau Nga Lai, Power Chan Kwok Pong, Wong Cho Nam and other students and had a lifetime full of students. In addition to his efforts in education, Chung King Fai's solo performance was just as well known. He directed and participated in classic dramas like WEST SIDE STORY and THE DEATH OF A SALESMAN, even in the fil GOD OF GAMBLERS 3: THE EARLY STAGE played Ko Chun's master. With an extreme eerie and mysterious smile, he perfectly interpreted the so-called "smile that could send chills to your spine" and became the villain classic in Hong Kong film history. He also narrated the ATV classis program STORIES FROM AFAR, with his unique and magnetic voice that remained collective memories today. Chung King Fai always faced life and death openly. "I am not afraid of getting old. I feel when a person keeps getting old, he is able to keep growing, keep learning. A leaf is also waiting for the time for it to fall in order to be able to release its most brilliant color. Life truly is very beautiful, so I would use my limited time to do the most I can." Once the news of Chung King Fai's passing spread, the entire entertainment circle was rocked. One of his disciples Tse Kwan Ho was rehearsing his new drama THE MAGIC HOUR at the Academy of Performing Arts. He said, "1986 was my first year at (the Academy of) Performing Arts, which was when I performed King Sir's CRYANO DE BERGERAC on the same stage. It was also the first performing art piece that I followed him in. Now getting the bad news in this old place, I am full of emotions and pain. Without King Sir, there would be no Academy of Performing Arts, and no Hong Kong show business pattern of today." He felt deeply grateful that his mentor passed away peacefully in his sleep and thought that it was the best ending, may he rest in peace. He also promised to handle his mentor's funeral later. So Yuk Wah also expressed her great sorrow. "When I learned that you left us, I couldn't speak for a long time. It was like falling into a time tunnel, with all the footage of the past appearing in front of me one by one. Your story has always encouraged me, inspired me -- to be uniformly focused, keep working hard, inject passion and strictly follow the rules, these professional spirits have always been a part of my performing art life." Ben Yuen Fu Wah lamented, "He was a teacher I really respect and love, and he made many contributions to the drama scene. I was fortune to be an actor in several of his plays. He would complete the work with ease and full of effort. In a play we played different characters in different versions, he gave me a lot of advices and a lot of encouragement. I have learned a lot from him." Lo Yuen Yen yesterday in a telephone interview with the TVB Entertainment News tearfully bid farewell o her mentor, revealing that originally she and her classmates were to visit Chung King Fai in the afternoon. "I admire King Sir the most, when I was in the training class he taught us very well. He taught us acting all the way to today. We respect him very much and felt that he really was very talented. He was already studying at Yale University in the 1960s, a master of drama with a doctorate degree and countless awards. I missed the chance to see him. Originally I was thinking about visiting him, but I didn't expect to receive this news. He and I have worked together on the TVB series WELCOME TO THE HOUSE and several more. After I heard the news I was numb." Christine Ng Wing Mei also collaborated with Chung King Fai on WELCOME TO THE HOUSE and the TVB drama THE STEW OF LIFE respectively, playing her father-in-law and father. "WELCOME TO THE HOUSE has more than 200 episodes, and I have the opportunity to get along with King Sir for a long time. He was a great senior, gentle and cultured. I am deeply honored to have the opportunity to work with and learn from this elder on my show business journey. I am very saddened to learn of his passing. The entertainment industry lost a respectable predecessor, may he have a safe journey." Lee Sze Kee and Chung King Fai performed in THE STEW OF LIFE and the stage play ON GOLDEN POND. Lee Sze Kee said that her co-star was the teacher she respected all her life. Chung King Fai focused on and was serious about the work, patiently taught the next-generation actors. She described him as a "true drama master", "the greatest gain in my acting career is to be able to meet such a good teacher, I will always miss and admire him." Lawrence Cheng Tan Shui said, "He was my Baptist communication department teacher. We played father and son in the drama WELCOME TO THE HOUSE. We were with each other day and night for over a year and it was a very rare destiny. In my heart he was a wise man. I would remember his kindness for the rest of my life." Liza Wang Ming Chuen said, "He made great contributions to and had great influence on the Hong Kong drama scene. Back then he and I performed the play OUR TOWN, later we also had many contact opportunities at TVB. With old age, really nothing could be done (about passing), fortunately he passed peacefully in his sleep." Former TVB producer Amy Wong Sum Wai revealed her deep connection with Chung King Fai. When she graduated from secondary school she registered for the TVB Training Class with classmates just for fun, and the examiner was Chung King Fai. She asked him a very silly question and left an impression with Chung King Fai. As she continued her studies she joined RTV on a summer job. There was an internal recruitment, Chung King Fai was a senior executive and interviewed her again. Many people applied for 4 spots, and she finally received the assistant director opportunity. Wong Sum Wai even got choked up as she said, "King Sir saw my enthusiasm for performing arts and gave the opportunity. King Sir was once my boss, he was highly respected in this industry and well educated; but as an actor, he didn't put on air, wouldn't exceed the position of the actor, very respectful of the director and would communicate with each other. He was very kind, he wouldn't mind the size of the role, everyone was very happy during production." Wong Sum Wai invited Chung King Fai to be the dramas she produced, MY FAMILY and THE STEW OF LIFE. She remembered that when he made MY FAMILY he was already up there in age. The series had a three levels village house, during the shoot he had to go up and down many times. "King Sir never said that he was tired. Everyone around him noticed that repeatedly going up and down on the stairs was very hard on him." When she found out yesterday that Chung King Fai passed away, she missed him and was saddened. Wayne Lai Yiu Cheung and Chung King Fai collaborated on TVB dramas COME HOME LOVE: DINNER AT 8 and THE CONFIDANT. Chung King Fai played his master in THE CONFIDANT, "King Sir's teaching on and off screen has benefited me a lot." Roger Kwok Chun On worked with him on COME ON, COUSIN and was rather sentimental. "King Sir to me was a treasure of the performing arts scene. Whether on or off camera he was full of knowledge, he was even very attractive with behind the scene narration. I was fortunate to have contact with him in COUSIN, during the process I thought he was a very courteous, very elegant gentleman. He was a teacher. If you ask, he would explain it to you." His co- star on dramas WILL POWER and THE DANCE OF PASSION Moses Chan Ho said, "King Sir's teaching and helping hand to the younger generation would always deeply influenced every one of us actors." Chung King Fai's last drama was TVB's FINDING HER VOICE that premiered in 2019. Playing his granddaughter in the show, Jacqueline Wong Sum Wing responded, "From when I was little and listened to his warm voice in STORIES FROM AFAR, to growing up and working with him, playing my grandfather, I felt extremely wonderful and honored. He brought us all the warm memories. May King Sir leave the pain behind and be happy, have a safe journey." Co-star Owen Cheung Chung Long said, "King Sir back then made this series after recovering from major illness. He was very energetic and very professional. Even when he felt unwell, he still insisted on performing all of his scenes. He was always on time, truly an exceptionally good great elder." Chung King Fai was never married and had no children, and had even less gossip. On Stephen Chan Chi Wan's 2009 TVB program BE MY GUEST he interviewed Chung King Fai and mentioned that in 1977 he was linked to So Hang Shuen in rumors, which Chung King Fai smiled and denied as he praised So Hang Shuen as a character actor. Chan Chi Wan said yesterday that he has already forgotten about asking Chung King Fai about dating So Hang Shuen, because the topic of the interview was Chung King Fai talking about drama. He also said that he has seen many of his stage dramas. He revealed that after BE MY GUEST he once recorded a radio interview with Chung King Fai, which was never released. He was considering scheduling a broadcast, so that everyone could relive the reasons why Chung King Fai was intoxicated in drama. Nancy Sit Ka Yin attended the event yesterday and mentioned that her relationship with Chung King Fai was as early as the RTV era when he was a high-level executive. When she and Michael Lai Siu Tin presided over "KA YIN AND SIU TIN", Chung King Fai also gave advice. "King Sir contributed a lot in the show business, was a very respected elder. He had a part in founding the Academy of Performing Arts. Many graduates of the school are now also teaching in my music center. He not only taught acting, but also taught everyone the attitude and the principles of life they should have. He was a great teacher. Back then we worked together on THE THREAT OF LOVE II, in which we played a variety of roles, sometimes during filming even I confused the characters. Fortunately I had King Sir's reminds and everyone had fun working together." Sit Ka Yin said that although she was saddened about Chung King Fai's passing and would miss him, passing away peacefully in his sleep was a kind of blessing. Wong Cho Nam and Power Chan Kwok Bong stated that their mentor Chung King Fai had far reaching influence on them. Wong Cho Nam posted on social network, "King Sir was well respected all his life, with students galore. I was fortunate enough to enroll several years before King Sir left his job (the Academy of Performing Arts) and able to attend his classes. The artistic principles he firmly held that have been useful for a lifetime have been more than I could count. Later when I entered show business, I had the opportunity to invite King Sir to participate in the drama COUSIN and FUK LUK SAU. In order to support students he never turned anything down, performing every aspect of life, both drama and comedy as students admired from the sidelines. The drama education that King Sir established changed each and every student's life tracks. May you on the stage in Heaven continued to perform the roles you liked and continue to chase your dreams!" * (2026/06/04) Cantonese opera star Law Yim Hing (Sister Hing), director Jack Ng Wai Lun, martial art superstars Yuen Biao and Lau Kar Wing two nights ago attended the opening ceremony of the "Hong Kong Film Archive Stories Treasure Hunting for 25 Years" would be held from June 3rd to March 29th next year at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, with nearly 1,000 museum-based film and cultural treasures collected, restored and preserved. Guest performers were singer Feanna Wong Shuk Man. Making a rare appearance, Sister Hing was happy to see old friends; Yuen Biao and Lau Kar Wing revisited their "life risking history"; a group of filmmakers also appeared to show their support. The scene was very lively. The opening ceremony was unveiled with Wong Shuk Man's song "We Almost Flew". She joked before singing that she was also 25 just like the film archive. After a speech from the Cultural and Leisure Services Director Manda Chan Wing Man, the event emcee invited Yuen Biao, Lau Kar Wing and Ng Wai Lun to share their different experiences of film on stage. After the opening ceremony the guests moved to the "Hong Kong Film Archive Stories Treasure Hunting for 25 Years" exhibition, Sister Hing and Yuen Biao both took photos in front of their respective works. Known as the "Prince of Beauty", Sister Hing revealed that she was almost 101 and said that she rarely went out normally due to a leg injury. After receiving many invitations from friends she agreed to attend this event. "I saw so many friends, meeting up is pretty happy." She said that this visit to the exhibition hall has brought up a lot of memories, as she remembered many lively and funny scenes when filming with Leung Sing Bo in the 1960s and 1970s. Sister Hing said, "Although I have rarely gone out, my grandnephews, disciples and their disciples also occasionally would check up on me and help with buying clothes." Sister Hing also shared her daily life, "I watch TV, have afternoon tea, and play mahjong with my friends, but I often miss out. The most important thing is to be able to have fun with friends." Speaking of former co-star Wu Fung's upcoming concerts, Law Yim Hing said that she would be interested in attending. "I know Wu Fung will perform and am considering going to support him. Normally I am already resting by 6 or 7 PM, I sleep very early, so I can go to an afternoon show." Lau Kar Wing and Yuen Biao represented two generations of martial art action actors. They remembered the past Hong Kong production action films were quite crazy, requiring jumps from several floors high to the ground. Shown in the exhibition hall was footage from their film KNOCKABOUT (JAP GA SIU JI), which made them remember the good times in the past. They praised that when making action films at that time they took a lot of risks, and yet was a very brilliant era for them. They were very happy that these wonderful fragments were preserved and exhibited in the exhibition, so that more people can enjoy them. Yuen Biao said, "I have participated in a lot of thrilling action scenes, (Sammo) Hung Kam Bo would be the action director, Jackie Chan and I were the stuntmen. If someone had to jump from the 2nd floor, if he couldn't I would and if I couldn't he would. A lot of experience was learned at that time." The most exciting thing was that late night show spectators who would applaud. "Actually I might not necessarily be able to see myself on the screen at that time, but I was excited just knowing that I did this stunt." Yuen Biao has known Master Lau Kar Wing since he was a stuntman. Master Lau humbly said, "I know how to fight, but Yuen Biao fights even sharper. If the stunt is a little dangerous, he would still worry and not let me do it." Speaking of working with Terrance Lau Chun Him in the film COLD WAR 1994 (HONG JING 1994), he praised him as humble and they got along harmonious. As for Lau Chun Him's martial art performance in another film TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN (GAU LUNG SING JAI JI WAI SING), he said, "His performance method is decent, but in terms of action it is lacking something. He still isn't an action actor yet. He is more of an acting school, adding a little of his own action in the future he would be more complete." "Hong Kong Film Archive Stories: Treasure Hunting for 25 Years" would be held at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum June 3rd to March 29th next year. The exhibition will showcase nearly 1 000 items of treasures of Hong Kong film culture that the HKFA has acquired, restored and preserved over the years, among which more than 100 items are making their debut, to demonstrate the enduring charm of Hong Kong cinema. The artefacts will also serve to look back on the HKFA's efforts in carrying forward Hong Kong's cinematic heritage over the past quarter century. The exhibition features several photo spots, including an interactive installation, "Galaxy Station", for visitors to take photos with images of movie stars from different eras when they were 25 years of age. Visitors can also take pictures at a poster wall, where classic film posters are mixed with neon light signs of film titles. The exhibition also showcases video messages from filmmakers of different generations congratulating the HKFA for its 25th anniversary. In collaboration with the Hong Kong Public Libraries, the HKFA has curated the "The Bookstore" zone, featuring a selection of the HKFA's previous publications, allowing readers to savor the rich essence of Hong Kong cinema. FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE 3D d. Tsui Hark Jet Li, Zhou Xun, Chen Kun, Gwei Lun-mei Length : 125 mins. Opening on June 7 2026 (Sun) [ BROADWAY CIRCUIT ] If a Wuxia subgenre could have evolved from King Hu's Dragon Gate Inn (1968), Tsui Hark would be the one to have the greatest credit, because this film continues the storyline of the 1992 Dragon Inn, reimagining a fresh installment in the same series. It features the internal power struggles within the inn, blended with desert treasure hunts, palace intrigue, and undercover machinations by the Eastern and Western Depots, forming a grander Wuxia world. Tsui Hark has long pushed the boundaries of Chinese-language filmmaking through continual exploration and experimentation. Following the then-burgeoning 3D technology in Hollywood, this film is the first Chinese-language Wuxia film to be released in 3D. Tsui Hark drew on 3D techniques from around the world and fused them with Wuxia. The desert tornado fight from Dragon Inn could not be perfected due to technical limits, but with advances in computer- generated effects, this scene evolves into an underground imperial palace beneath a black sandstorm, giving it a fantastical new look. The 3D version will be shown in this screening. Each ticket includes a pair of 3D glasses. Post screening talk with Yuen Bun & Elson Cheng The post-screening talk will be conducted in Cantonese. Opening June 6 2026 [ BROADWAY CIRCUIT ] A two-hundred-year slumbering ancient demon Insomnia is preparing to strike the Omei Clan, threatening to wipe out the last peacekeeping immortals of Zu. King Sky, the lone survivor of Kunlun Clan, carrying his master Dawn's memories and her weapon Moon Orb, teams up with the Omei Clan's Whitebrows, Red, and Enigma, among others, to unite against the looming catastrophe that could devastate the universe. Eighteen years after Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain appeared, Tsui Hark returns to Zu with an expanded, grander vision. The film presents a complex, tightly woven logic among immortals, demons, and humans, with an endless stream of extraordinary techniques, divine weapons, and magical realms. Its fantastical visuals and whimsical ideas are among the most vibrant in Hong Kong cinema. The Legend of Zu exemplifies Tsui Hark's skillful use of allegory, expressing his frustration and ambition through a troupe of celestial swordsmen and immortals during Hong Kong cinema’s darkest hour. How to be reborn? How to save oneself? How to handle the burdens, memories, and sentiments of the past—cling to them or sever ties? These are the core questions of the film, and Tsui Hark's rallying cry remains sharp and timeless. Post screening talk with Eddy Wong & David Chan The post-screening talk will be conducted in Cantonese. AFTER THE STORM d. Daniel Lee Yan Kong Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit), Sean Lau Ching Wan, Karen Mok Man Wai Length : 98 mins. Opening on May 31 2026 [ BROADWAY CIRCUIT ] Tsui Hark has always harbored a strong interest in Japanese animation, but from I Love Maria to The Wicked City he served only as producer, not director. This time, adapting Li Chi-ak's comic Black Mask, he also brings in Daniel Lee, who previously impressed him with The Mystery of the Condor Hero, to helm the project. With Lee's unique visual style and a reunion of Tsui, Jet Li and Yuen Woo-ping, the film aims to present a local sci-fi superhero in a futuristic urban action thriller, offering a refreshing blend. Tsui is a painless killer in the secret Squad 701. To evade capture, he disguises himself as a librarian, drawing the attention of colleague Tracy. He also befriends detective Stone. His former mentor and protégé in Squad 701 come to Hong Kong for a major heist, and Tsui helps Stone in a Black Mask persona, leading to high-octane confrontations. Jet Li's Black Mask look and rugged fighting style clearly pays homage to the Bruce Lee character in The Green Hornet. The film's level of violence surpassed Western standards at the time, and the English-dubbed version proved popular in the North American market, helping Li and Yuen Wo-ping make their mark in Hollywood soon afterwards. This screening features a 2K restoration. Post screening talk with Daniel Lee & Li Cheuk-to The post-screening talk will be conducted in Cantonese. SHANGHAI BLUES 2024 (4K RESTORATION) d. Tsui hark Sylvia Chang Ai-chia, Kenny Bee (Chung Chun To), Sally Yeh (Yip Sin Man) Length : 103 mins. Opening May 30 2026 [ BROADWAY CIRCUIT ] In 1984, Tsui Hark co-founded the legendary Film Workshop and produced this nostalgic, romance-infused drama, which he has once cited as his most satisfying work. Tung and Shu pledge to meet again after the war once victory is achieved, as the war rages on around them beneath a bridge. Ten years later, they return to Shanghai and fail to realise that they are upstairs-downstairs neighbours, and after a twist of fate they recognise each other. Shu, seeing Stool fall for Tung, chooses to leave and board a train to Hong Kong. Tsui Hark uses exaggerated, slapstick-style staging to create a series of mistaken identities, while also delivering heartfelt, tearful moments. Set in pre-liberation Shanghai, the film evokes a palpable sense of historical nostalgia when mirrored against Hong Kong's path ahead. This new restored version marks the 40th anniversary of Film Workshop and features a 4K restoration with re- recorded dialogue in Shanghainese, Mandarin, Cantonese, and even French, plus new sound mixing. Post screening talk with O Sing-pui & Eric Tsang The post-screening talk will be conducted in Cantonese. SHOPLIFTERS d. Opening March 26 2026 in Japan Opening April 23 2026 [ EMPEROR CINEMAS ] It was one day in late February, with the entrance exams over and graduation just around the corner. Amid the government's increasingly strict surveillance, the students of Class 3-E looked back on their year with Korosensei. Memories resurfaced the fading doodles they drew on Professor Bitch, the special swimming lessons, the clashes with the students of Class A, and Valentine's chocolates. The classroom bustled with nostalgic conversations. Meanwhile, during winter break, Korosensei was targeted by a group of four assassins, but as always, he easily dodged their attacks. Later, when he visited the izakaya they frequented to tease them, he ended up saving the blind owner, Azusa, who was burdened with debt, and her daughter Hotaru, from a certain incident. Through this encounter, Korosensei once again strengthened his resolve: to accept his fate, yet fulfill his duty as a teacher with all his might until the very end. Another day began as usual. The students of Class 3-E continued their attempts to assassinate Korosensei before the school year ended, while Korosensei, with a smile, deflected their attacks and praised their growth. And in the ending, the "graduation album" Korosensei's final task reveals a glimpse of their future, leading into the series finale. HUMAN RESOURCE d. As the journey unfolds, desire and identity blur, echoing Philip Yung's portrait of a city continually redefining its sense of belonging. Cyclone is a curious title, alluding to one of modern martial-arts literature and cinema's most tragic heroines: Mei Chaofeng, often translated as Cyclone Mei. Like her literary counterpart, Cyclone is a wanderer, travelling from the People's Republic of China to Hong Kong in search of gender-affirming surgery. Yet the longer the journey takes, the less certain she becomes of her desire. The identity in question and the passage undertaken reach beyond the individual. Yung is also thinking of Hong Kong, a place whose identity is constantly questioned and that keeps searching for a sense of its own belonging. Although internationally known for multilayered crime films such as Where the Wind Blows (2022), Philip Yung has long been drawn to more intimate stories. Cyclone feels like a place where everything he cares about has found a home. The narrative is both sprawling and concentrated, profoundly personal yet resonant with the experience of a people. It moves across temporal, regional and cultural barriers with clarity and grace, all the while maintaining an effortless visual beauty. - Vanja Kaludjercic [ 50TH HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ] Anchored by a powerful performance by Liu Yuqiao as the eponymous protagonist, Philip Yung's transgender drama is a poignant and empathetic tale of a lost soul searching for a place of belonging. Named after Cyclone Mei, the unfairly maligned tragic figure in Louis Cha's martial arts novels, Cyclone works as a sex worker in Hong Kong to save up for gender-affirming surgery. But the more her identity is denied by the world and those around her, the more her desires begin to diminish. Raw and engrossing, this is Yung's most intimate directorial effort yet. Big Screen Competition, Rotterdam. AFTERPIECE Can : Dai Sei Mok Lit : Act 4 d. Owen, once a celebrated stage director, has spent more than a decade lost in creative paralysis. His former lover, Su Manling, re-enters his life under the guise of old affection, while his wife, Tracy, teeters on the edge of betrayal. Determined to reclaim his dignity, Owen sets out to write, direct, and star in a new work of his own. Yet during the open casting process for the female lead, he becomes deeply drawn to Hannah, an untrained newcomer, and gradually slips into a dangerous space between theatre and reality. This is not a film about the stage -- it is a film about why people drive themselves onto it. As Owen is forced to perform the roles of "director", "husband", "former lover", and "creator" beneath the gaze of four women, and as rehearsal becomes a rehearsal for real life itself, the theater ceases to be a refuge; instead, it becomes a mirror that exposes what lies beneath. What Keane Wong's screenplay seeks to approach is the fissure illuminated by the spotlight: Is a person truly creating a role, or merely escaping from himself? The answer is destined to be revealed, in all its loss of control, on opening night. SECRET IN THE BOX Can : Ji Hup Chong Mai AKA : FAT MAI CHONG Lit : LEGAL HIDE AND SEEK d. Opening at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival Opening April 9 2026 at the 50th Hong Kong International Film Festival Opening June 18 2026 [ THE GOLDEN HORSE FILM FESTIVAL ] This poetic documentary blends old photographs, letters, and contemporary footage to explore two parallel "Stephen" families - Virginia Woolf's and the director's own - unfolding in Hong Kong and mainland China between the 1930s and 1960s. Set against colonial rule, war, and revolution, the film quietly examines identity, empire, and memory, bridging personal history with broader political shifts to connect with audiences on both intimate and historical levels. [ THE 50TH HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ] Mary Stephen takes her Western name as the starting point for a multi-layered exploration of identity and family, beginning with uncovering the notebooks of her father, Henry Stephen. They reveal a literary account tracing her lineage to Australia, yet complicate accounts and reveal obfuscated identities. Against the epoch- defining backdrop of British colonialism and Chinese migration, Palimpsest explores the universal desire to uncover one's origins and the power of the narratives we tell ourselves in the process. Best Documentary Feature and Best Film Editing, Golden Horse Awards. [ BROADWAY CIRCUIT ] "With this film, I continue doing what I've always done as an editor and director: telling stories that intrigue and move me, stories wrapped in mystery." Spanning eight decades and four continents, filmmaker and editor Mary Stephen embarks on a personal investigation into her English surname. It is not intended to be a narcissistic exploration but rather an effort to uncover the dissonances and the contradictions in our heritage that, in spite of our all-too-human desire for harmony and continuity, are the fundamental elements that shape us. It is in this spirit that this intimate journey unfolds. Drawing from her father's home movies and diaries, family photographs, her own travel footage, fragments of oral history and official archives, Stephen constructs a layered, polyphonic narrative where personal memory and collective history converge. The film traverses a turbulent period in China's past -- marked by the fall of a fading dynasty, civil war, Japanese invasion, and the eventual rise of the Communist Party. Against this backdrop, Hong Kong -- under British colonial rule since 1842 -- emerges as a paradoxical space, where Western modernity collides with Eastern heritage: a city of one million Chinese governed by twenty thousand Europeans. The film moves between Hong Kong's working-class neighborhoods, where schoolteacher Hilda Yik marries laborer Chan Tik-Fong amid petty trade and Hollywood dreams; to Wuhan, where British intellectual Julian Bell -- son of Vanessa Bell and nephew of Virginia Woolf -- engages in a scandalous affair with a renowned married Chinese writer; to far-flung places like the Australian outback, Montreal and Toronto, London and Cambridge, Paris and Cassis in the south of France, tracing unlikely crossings and quiet revolutions. How, and why, did Hilda Yik and Chan Tik-Fong eventually become Hilda and Henry Stephen? Mary Stephen assembles a delicate, fragmented mosaic meditation on reinvention, on the irresistible temptation to rewrite one's story, and on the universal human impulse to fictionalize the self. Ten days after an extraterrestrial pathogen crashes onto Earth, its spores begin to resonate with humanity's "lie brainwaves," driving people into madness and transforming them into grotesque creatures known as Ashes. Amid the ruins, a live streamer named May and a soldier named Yanga are forced to fight side by side inside a collapsing hospital, confronting both monsters and the fading remnants of human nature. It is a story of truth and redemption -- a reflection of how light struggles to survive in the depths of despair. Humanity has never escaped lies, and in the end of the world, deceit becomes a fatal trigger. When truth collides with survival, how will humanity choose? [ HONG KONG MOVIE 6 ] 14 days ago, a comet ripped across the sky, unleashing the disaster now known as the Grayfall. Within hours, parasitic spores called Gray Matters transformed people into savage monsters known as Spikers, collapsing society overnight. Governments sealed off infected cities, buried the truth, and left the outbreak zones to rot. 16-year-old influencer Mai, refusing to believe the official story, breaks into Central Hospital—the outbreak's ground zero -- with her AI cobot, BooBoo. Inside, fear spreads faster than the infection as survivors turn on each other. After rescuing a little girl named Anna, Mai fights to escape a hospital overrun by Spikers. Her path collides with Ren Cade, a ruthless black-ops commander hunting her, while Dr. Theodore secretly pulls the strings from mission control. As survival and conspiracy collide, Mai must protect Anna and uncover the truth before everything is erased forever. PUELLA MAGI MADOKA MAGICA THE MOVIE - WALPURGISNACHT RISING - d.
