MISCELLANEOUS * (2025/11/11) The Louis Cheung Kai Chung starred movie GOLDEN BOY (GUM TUNG) waited for 6 years to finally be released. He once was worried that it would end badly. Finally he paid 6 figures out of his own pocket for the post-production, so that he would be able to put this effort on the big screen. Before the production started, he received boxing training and was injured all over. He admitted that he has tried his best because of his ambition and wanted to win the award and be recognized with GOLDEN BOY. Having gone through a low ebb, Cheung Kai Chung now has seen everything, thinking that some scenery is the most beautiful from a perspective in hell. He treated the movie like a human experiment, to give his son Cheung Chim an ultimate example. When chasing dreams without regrets, something has already been gained from the process; do not be obsessed with the result. Cheung Kai Chung said that he did not just take the role in GOLDEN BOY, but even took part in planning it. When he was working a drama on TVB in 2017, he worked closely with producer Joe Chan Wai Koon and they admired each other very much. While chatting we talked about working together on a movie. "I thought what movie should we make? I have loved the movie "Rocky" since I was a child, because the movie is about being indomitable, crawling up from a low place. The movie affected my entire life value. The night before I got married I was still watching "Rocky 2", which tells the story of family. The movie encouraged myself to become an adult. Some movies would affect people's lifelong values. The last Hong Kong movie about boxing was the (Aaron) Kwok Fu Sing starred SOMEBODY UP THERE LIKES ME (LONG MAN FUNG BO), so I decided for Chan Wai Koon to direct this movie. Before finding an investor I have already begun to discuss scripts and train my body." GOLDEN BOY took two years of preparation before starting production. During this period Cheung Kai Chung accepted boxing training with Hong Kong boxing champion Rex Tso Sing Yu, gained 50 pounds from muscle training in order to make himself look like a boxer. "So for a period of time everyone saw that I was shaped like a refrigerator, without a neck. I couldn't work on many commercials, and many directors did not use me. At the time I was preparing to shoot GOLDEN BOY, but I couldn't tell others. After training everyday, I had to ask my wife to step on my body to loosen my tendons. I endured until the last 5 days of the boxing scenes shoot. My body was seriously injured, and I believed that my internal organs were 'crooked'. At the time I couldn't drink too much water, I went to the bathroom it really was just a few drips. In recent years I have started to have pelvic herniation and sciatica. I have to do a lot of physical therapy, and my wife is also very worried." Cheung Kai Chung endured all the physical pain to complete the shoot, but unexpectedly because the stakeholder film company closed, no one was responsible for the 7-figure amount owed. Even if a white knight wanted to make a move, many complex problems were involved that it did not happen. "Last year I originally wanted to release it, but due to technical and editing problems I thought it hasn't reached its best. I really wanted to make it a little better. Since I have contributed so much to the movie, I should try my best to finish the product. So I proposed to edit it anew then work on post-production. I decided to pay myself, more than 6 figures. I also had to take on behind-the-scenes planning and coordination work, which I don't know anything at all about as an actor. Now I feel that this is a very precious experience, and I owe a lot to the elders for their assistance and kindness." The 45-year-old Cheung Kai Chung tried his best to make GOLDEN BOY 6 years ago, admitting that he was still young and ambitious at the time. He hoped to win awards and recognition for this film, "This didn't happen, but I still feel blessed. I am still very lucky to be alive, and I have also been nominated for other films. Even at the moment of announcement I didn't in, I still had many movies to make afterward. Actually in this business if you can't get over this psychological obstacle then you would overthink. I started with the music awards ceremony, and when I heard the prelude music of the awards ceremony I would be scared. I saw my wife and friends kept winning awards nonstop, but I didn't. What could I do? I have already put in a lot of effort into it. If I don't get one I don't. Then at the TVB awards, I knew that I wouldn't get an award because I wasn't one of theirs; but I was very grateful to TVB for giving me a lot of opportunities. The nomination meant that I did pretty well. With this movie, I would be very happy to win an award in the end. It doesn't matter if I don't win though. Now I feel that everything happens is the best arrangement, and I have no regrets after doing my best." He said that if the audience would respond well to GOLDEN BOY and like it, he would be a living inspirational film from being looked down upon back then to having a masterpiece after 20 years. However even if it would be mediocre after its release, he would not consider it as a failure. "This is How life is. I have the passion to do one thing. Don't think too much about it in the end." Cheung Kai Chung said that Golden Boy was the name of his character in the film, but it actually referred to the son who made him get back up. "There is a line that touched me very much. In the end everyone told me to give up, but I said I don't want to disappoint my son. I believe that being a father is like this, in reality I am the same way. I don't want to disappoint the next generation, I have to be a good example This movie is also family education, a crazy lead by example. I just want the son to know, if you want to pursue your dream you have to try your best to pursue it. You would already gain something from the process, don't be obsessed with the result." Playing Cheung Kai Chung's son in the film, Leander Lau Ho Lan is the same age as his real eldest son Cheung Chim. They even learned to dance together. Cheung Kai Chung strongly praised Lau Ho Lan's outstanding performance, almost without any bad take at all. Lau Ho Lan said that he was only 11 years old when he made GOLDEN BOY. He remembered seeing "Papa" Cheung Kai Chung on the set constantly stretching and practicing, which he admired very much. "If I have the chance I want to try it once and see where my limits can go." He said that at this stage, he hoped to develop in music. He has formed a band with his classmates, and wanted to become a singer-songwriter. * (2025/11/11) The 22nd "Hong Kong Asian Film Festival HKAFF" held a closing and awards ceremony the night before, announcing the "New Talent Award" and "Youth Jury Award" on the spot. This year's "New Talent Award" judges were actress Cecilia Choi Sze Wan, film festival curator Sung Moon, and film producer Shan Zuolong, and selected Bian Zhuo, the director of "AS THE WATER FLOWS", to win the award. As a judge at the film festival for the first time, Choi Sze Wan said that watching 8 movies in 3 days was like a marathon. Although it took a lot of energy, but it felt very fun. She also judged from the intuitive feeling of the actors appreciating the movie, so she had different opinions from the other two senior filmmakers. However this time her favorite AS THE WATER FLOWS was also a movie within the range of the two filmmakers, so everyone was satisfied with the results. After this experience, she also had a new perspective to learn about film. Would she start to be interested in other roles in film? She said that she still had too many things that she wanted to learn as an actor, so she has not have the courage to do so. As for her husband Terrance Lau Chun Him, as far as she knew he probably would be interested in doing behind-the-scenes work, but she left the details for him to share. Choi Sze Wan and Lau Chun Him were busy with their own jobs soon after getting married and have not seen each other in three weeks. She joked that she hoped that she would not to wait until Qixi to meet like the Cowherd and Weaver Girl, but at the moment her husband was still working in Taiwan; so she could only take time to visit him. She revealed that recently they watched the same movie on the same date without making plans to in advance, then they talked on the phone and shared their opinions. It felt very romantic. Actors Gigi Leung Wing Kei, Peter Chan Charm Man, Ling Man Lung and others from the closing movie PASS AND GOAL (YIK JUEN SEUNG BOON CHEUNG) also attended the closing ceremony. Gigi said the film would be very educational and suitable for children and adults. The film would be released on Christmas and encounter many blockbusters, but Gigi still confidently expressed her hope that this film win out as a "dark horse", just like the title of the film. Gigi said that she frequently played mother roles, so working with a group of children as the team leader in PASS AND GOAL was not difficult all all. The toughest part was shooting during the hottest days of summer. Everyday they were working in the open under the sun, completely without any roof or shade over their heads. Jeffrey Ngai Chun Sun, Rosa Velasco (Wai Law Sha) and Lam Yiu Sing two nights ago appeared at the closing ceremony for the film ROAD TO VENDETTA's premiere. As the lead actor for the first time, Jeffrey was asked about how he felt about being an action actor. He said that he enjoyed it very much. The most unforgettable was having to deal with Japan's chilly weather. "The temperature was in the negative (Celsius) for the long run, everyday we worked for 16 to 18 hours but everyone had a lot of fun. So as soon as we were on the set we were all awake again." * (2025/11/09) Louise Wong Dan Nei was dressed in black the night before to attend the stocking brand event. Louise said that when she first started working as a model, she bought stockings of different styles and colors. Reporters asked her with a smile if she used stockings to tempt her husband Sheldon Lo (Law Hau Yung)? She smiled and said that she would often show different looks in front of her husband to create a sense of freshness. Sometimes she would tie up her hair, sometimes wear loose clothing; then suddenly she would wear close-fitting dresses to express her different selves, thinking that it was all for fun between husband and wife. Louise revealed that she has been busy thanking the audience for the new 4K edited version of the movie ANITA (MUI YIM FONG) recently. She was very happy to know that many people have booked private screenings, and fans and friends have also gone to the theater to support her. This new edition was like an all new ANITA, familiar yet with a sense of freshness. Louise in the movie AGAINST ALL ODDS (YING GAU FEI FU), in addition to getting a crew cut, also had to practice rifle use. "But the gun is already in its 80s and often jams, the director wants me to perform a series of fights and somersaults before shooting, but many times the gun jams when firing. So before filming I stroke the gun to 'communicate', and most of the time it will listen and cooperate." Louise said that she had no martial arts background, but she was also addicted to performing action scenes after this time. She hoped to become an "action actress" in the future, as well as showing the audience see a different Wong Dan Nei. * (2025/11/08) A veteran actor who has appeared in more than 200 movies and TV series, Ling Hon was rumored to have passed away today (8th). Having worked with Ling Hon at TVB for many years, Chan Min Leung confirmed the news of his death and said in an interview with the media, "Ling Hon is no LONGER here. He has been gone for at least 5 years, and I heard the news in the dressing room at that time. Everyone was familiar from working together, and would chat at meetings. He was rather generous as a person, always saying in life you can't mind too much. He was very thoughtful with young actors and often gave advice." Ling Hon came to Hong Kong from the mainland in the 1950s, initially working as a screenwriter at Shaw Brothers. He later moved to the front of the screen, acting in many Chinese and Cantonese films. In the 1970s he worked for CTV, RTV and TVB and played countless down-to-earth roles, such as neighbor, janitor, master, etc., and sometimes played 5 roles in the same drama. Most of the roles Ling Hon played early on had names, such as Hung Ting Bak in "The Legend of the White-Haired Witch", Tse Gai in "Fatherland", Uncle Fu in "Time Before Time", etc. Later they gradually became unnamed characters, but his appearance was familiar to the audience. Ling Hon once played Ng Jok in HAIL THE JUDGE (GAU BUN JI MA GUOON BAK MIN BAU CHING TIN), and played the imperial doctor who took the pulse of Stephen Chow Sing Chi in THE FLIRTING SCHOLAR (TONG BAK FU DIM CHAU HEUNG). He left TVB around 2003, and his last dramas included "The King of Yesterday and Tomorrow", "In the Realm of Fancy" and "Ups and Downs in the Sea of Love". Gordon Lam Ka Tung has worked with Ling Hon many times. He once said that senior actors of Ling Hon's generation were often treated coldly. "Sister Law Lan is okay, still with a name. When you talk about Ho Bik Kin, Chan Chung Kin, Suen Kwai Hing, and Ling Hon, the new colleagues don't know them at all. That's understandable, but why don't the person in charge of signing them ask the new colleagues to take care of these senior actors." Law Lok Lam once said in an interview, "Brother Ling Hon taught me that 'acting is a job; if you do it well, you will feel at ease'." * (2025/11/08) The premiere of the movie SOMEONE LIKE ME (JEUNG NGOR JEH YEUNG DIK OI CHING) was held the night before at the "22nd Hong Kong Asian Film Festival", with actors Carlos Chan Ka Lok, Fish Liew Chi Yu and director Tam Wai Ching attending together. Liew Chi Yu played a cerebral palsy patient in the film. In order to be different from her usual image, she wore glasses. Because she has 700-degree myopia, her eyes would become smaller when she would wear glasses. The audience probably would not be able to recognize her without make up right away. The movie was rated category III, and Chan Ka Lok became a category III actor. He joked that THE BROTHERHOOD OF REBEL (JAT JIK 2) was already rated category III because of the blood, but this time would be a category III romantic film. Ka Lok and Fish had a bed scene in the film. Fish admitted that shooting a passionate scene with a friend was indeed embarrassing, but after entering the role she forgot that she was uncomfortable. She joked that Ka Lok took charge of all the nude shots, and the picture were quite shocking. Ka Lok revealed that a shot covered the back to the buttocks, with only covered with a flesh-colored cloth in the front, but only Fish was able to see his front. He pointed out that Fish was trustworthy. "So I think it doesn't matter. If it really can't be covered, I will accept that." Fish joked, "The trauma is too much I already blacked out, it seems to be called post-traumatic stress disorder." Ka Lok laughed and pointed out that during the Tokyo Film Festival premiere, when they watched the clip again they looked at each other in embarrassment. Both of them said that they were not worried about their partners watching it, and would even invite them to the theater to support the movie because everyone respected each other's professions. Ka Lok pointed out that his wife Shiga Lin might close her eyes when she saw that scene, but on the other hand he would respect her as the same when she would film a passionate scene. Fish also shared interesting anecdotes during filming. She had a scene where she wanted to hurriedly drive an electric wheelchair forward on the street, but suddenly a female passerby stepped out at a corner. She braked suddenly and caused the wheelchair to flip, she hesitated in her heart whether to "save the show" or "save herself". Finally she decided to save herself and immediately stood up normally to avoid overturning, but the female passerby was stunned. She could only say sorry to her, and then sat down to continue the scene. Ka Lok also had a scene in which he was extremely emotionally exhausted. He has already tried his best, but he was disappointed that the director did not say "good take". After returning home he had difficulty sleeping. His wife Shiga Lin saw this and cooked noodles to comfort him, persuading him to calm down and suggesting communication with the director. It just so happened that the director sent a message to invite him to reshoot again and he was relieved. "I've been holding it in for a few hours, just to want the director to give a speech." Lin Sze Nga revealed that her crazy shopping scared Ka Lok when she traveled to Japan earlier. Ka Lok smiled and said, "Did she tell everyone? Then I am not afraid to talk! In fact we have never had the opportunity to travel since we got married and had a daughter. I have never seen my wife's eyes shine when sweeping up the goods, which is really eye-opening." He joked that when he saw his wife buying multiple handbags in a row, he was sweating from fright. His credit card was even maxed out, and he had to pay the card amount on the spot before he could swipe the card again. "My credit card spending limit is very low. I usually have a very tight restriction on myself just to prevent myself from having this day; but many of them she paid for herself, so I owe her a lot of gifts. I then just give a large one all at once." He smiled bitterly and said that he would continue to work hard to make money in the future. In addition he was timid that he would reveal too much, so he repeatedly asked the media whether his wife had really talked about her shopping spree. * (2025/11/07) The 22nd Hong Kong Asian Film Festival recently held a surprise screening, with actors Renci Yeung Sze Wing, Ling Man Lung, Peter Chan Charm Man and Ronald Lam Tsz Kit from the movie UNIDENTIFIED MURDER (UFO LEI KEI MING ONG) hidden in the theater to observe the audience's reaction. Yeung Sze Wing had to hold back her laughter wildly during the shoot, as working with her three partners was a rather happy experience. She joked that she was often "bullied". "After I say one thing, the three of them would suddenly quiet down and not respond to me. I had to beg everyone to respond." * (2025/11/06) Veteran actor Sam Lam Sheung Mo died of a heart attack the day before yesterday at the age of 75. After graduating from Hong Kong Baptist College (now Hong Kong Baptist University) with a degree in Chinese, he later joined the Communication Department Broadcast Television Production Team. Lam joined the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre in 1978 and was one of the first 10 full-time actors recruited. He has performed in many stage plays and a stalwart in the Hong Kong theater industry, as well as in films. In 1989 Lam Sheung Mo won the Best Actor Award in the Stage Category from the Artists Federation and then joined TVB, participating in a number of dramas including A TIME OF TASTE, BESIDE THE SEASIDE, BESIDE TEH SEA, THE CHALLENGE OF LIFE, THE LEGEND OF THE CONDOR HEROES and THE FILE OF JUSTICE II, etc., before leaving the nest in 1996. Lam Sheung Mo suffered from nasopharyngeal cancer in 1994 and retreated behind the scenes to work as a screenwriter, editor, performing arts educator and stage manager, and returned to the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre from 1997 to 2004 to work in the Education and Development Department. In 2005 he served as an instructor of the performing arts course of the Hong Kong Performing Artists Guild. After recovering from cancer, Lam Sheung Mo faced many physical difficulties; due to nasopharyngeal cancer affecting the cervical nerve, he suffered from slurred speech after completing chemotherapy. In 2004 he became deaf in his right ear due to cold bacteria entering his ear. In 2009 he suffered from severe migraine and disbanded the "Rulin Service Society" drama troupe he established. After 10 months of near-autistic right ear deafness and speechlessness, he gradually recovered, and continued to work as a freelance editor and volunteer for an online channel for two years. In 2013 Lam Sheung Mo was awarded the Outstanding Life Award by the "Top 10 Warriors for Regeneration", and in 2017 he attended the HKBU fundraising special session sharing session of the stage play OUR TOWN at the Sunbeam Theatre in North Point. At the time he was thin and needed to wear a hearing aid. In recent years he often shared poems and lyrics on social media and opened his own online channel to share his life philosophy. * (2025/11/06) In July this year Josie Ho Chiu Yi stopped work to accompany her husband Conroy Chan Chi Chung to the United States for surgical treatment due to health problems again, and issued a statement revealing that her husband's surgical site was close to the heart. She hoped that the outside world would give him space to recuperate. Chan Chi Chung has recovered after treatment and recuperation, and attended the production start of the movie he would produce, THE MAGE 2. Lead actress Ho Chiu Yi and lead actor Imani Taheri would star with Gardner Tse Kwan Ho and Kent Cheng Juk Si; directors and brothers Oxide Pang Chun and Danny Pang Fat would co-direct again 12 years after the movie OUT OF INFERNO (TOH CHOOK SUN TIN). Chan Chi Chung appeared at the production start ceremony in high spirits, smiling, chatting and laughing with the people present. He revealed that THE MAGE 2 (SUP FONG FAT SI 2) would be a martial arts light comedy. This kind of movie has already been a rare sight in Hong Kong films, he and his wife Ho Chiu Yi have always hoped to present this kind of movie in front of the audience with a new look. "Our company 852 has never made such an action movie, I believe it would be a milestone." After TWINS EFFECT (CHIN GEI BIN), Ho Chiu Yi fulfilled her wish to play a heroine in THE MAGE 2 after many years. "I feel that it is a restart of my acting career." In order to cope with the large number of action scenes, Ho Chiu Yi and Iman began training 9 months ago, and the martial arts director specifically invited a Chinese martial arts team to train them to practice the moves of various schools and the use of various weapons. Chan Chi Chung said that at first he was worried when he saw the two practicing until they were injured all over; but later when he saw that the training was on track, he knew that they were physically fit to cope and started filming with confidence. * (2025/11/06) IN YOUR DREAMS (YI CHING CHUN DIK MING YI) director Tam Wai Ching directed the new film SOMEONE LIKE ME (JEUNG NGOR JEH YEUNG DIK OI CHING), which starred Fish Liew Chi Yu and Carlos Chan Ka Lok. The film has been selected for the "Women's Empowerment" section of the 38th Tokyo International Film Festival; the film told the story of Amei, who was born with cerebral palsy, had an optimistic personality, but her overprotective mother resolutely arranged for her to undergo hysterectomy; on the recommendation of a friend, Amei found a spontaneous organization that provided sexual services for people with disabilities and met volunteer Ah Kin. Films featuring cerebral palsy patients are not uncommon, such as the Japanese film 37 SECONDS and the Lee Chang-dong directed OASIS, etc. Tam Wai Ching said, "When I decided to make this subject, I hoped not to magnify the cerebral palsy disease; so I wrote it as a love story." Fish said that she has long noticed that an organization in Taiwan that provides sexual services for people with disabilities, "Hand Angel". She has always wanted to write a story about it but never did. When she learned in a roundabout way that Tam Wai Ching wanted to shoot it, she immediately offered her services. "Maybe Heaven heard my prayers, the director finally asked me." Tam said that she wanted to ask her a long time ago. "She is the most sought-after actress in Hong Kong, I heard that she has no room on her schedule." Chan Ka Lok has never heard of the organization, but after reading the script he was very interested in performing. "First, it is a literary romance film, and secondly I have always admired the producer Kwan Kam Peng." The director was rumored to have no confidence in him, but after they met Ka Lok confessed that he was in poor physical condition. He won the role instead because he was as imperfect as the character. Fish said that she started preparing for the role a month before filming started. She met with a disabled athlete, shot some videos and went home to practice. "She helped me a lot. I asked about the details of her life with her boyfriend, as well as body movements, breathing, speech style, etc." Ka Lok also cut his hair short, got a tan, and even lost 15 pounds for the role. In the film Fish and Ka Lok have a bed scene, the latter bared his rear in the performance. Not only the two of them but also Tam Wai Ching was embarrassed during the shoot. "We are all so nervous, but we have been pretending to be fine. We didn't have any special rehearsal beforehand." The director said that Fish would probably be the most embarrassed because she saw Ka Lok in his full frontal glory, but Fish said, "I don't remember anything, I blacked out! I probably have looked down, but I don't remember at all." Ka Lok laughed and said that he has taken sufficient safety measures. At the time he did not care whether he had any "wardrobe malfunction" or not, saying that he did not care even he did. "I was better off finishing the shoot as soon as possible, her (Fish) seeing it alone was better than the whole world seeing it after a bad take." Because of this bed scene, Tam Wai Ching shared the short story when Patrick Tam Ka Ming directed NOMAD (LIT FOR CHING CHUN). In that film after the bed scene between Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing and Cecilia Yip Tung was completed, assistant director Stanley Kwan Kam Peng rushed over and handed a towel to the two actors to wrap themselves up in; but Tam Ka Ming yelled at him, saying that his move made the actors embarrassed. If the actors performed professionally, they would never mind being naked in front of others. Fish said that the most memorable scene in the film was watching the sunrise with Ka Lok on Fei Ngo Shan. That night was very cold and foggy. Ka Lok said that breaking down and crying while eating cake was the most memorable. "The first time I filmed this scene it was almost dawn, the schedule was rushed and everyone was very tired. After the performance and the director watched the play back, she didn't say good take. She only said she got enough to edit, then the shoot was done." Fish felt the same way, "(As an actor) The phrase 'enough to edit' is worse than foul language." Ka Lok continued, "After returning home I was in a very bad mood, thinking about what I was missing in that scene. My wife saw I was upset and as soon as I talked bout it I broke down and cried; later, I received a text message from the director, saying that the scene would be filmed again the next day. I was just waiting for the director to say this; I didn't know if I would perform better, but I must shoot it again." When Tam Wai Ching heard Ka Lok's confession, she was moved to tears on the spot. * (2025/11/06) Angela Yuen Lai Lam, Sabrina Cheung Man Sha, Kayan9896 (Jeannie Ng Ka Yan) and CY (Chase Chan Chung Chak) worked together on the movie GAMER GIRLS (DIN GAING NUI HAI), which held its premiere the night before. Suffering from the flu, Yuen Lai Lam said that she had never been sick three times in a month. In order to promote new films, she flew to 5 places on 6 days and her physical exhaustion caused her illness to recur. The film was filmed with an investment of HK$5 million 4 years ago. She said that at the time she was in her 20's. "Looking back now I feel I look different. Now I am 31, grown. I hope I am prettier." Was her salary at a friendly rate back then? She said that she did not make movies for money, just for her dreams. She revealed that she deeply experienced the pain of chasing her movie making dream during the shoot. The shoot lasted 20 some days, 10 of which went over 20 hours. Going to the bathroom was quite a bother in a cosplay costume. She had to hold it and even be on the wires. However the girls had a lot of fun during the shoot, after which they were all addicted to gaming but would limit to spend several hundred on the game every month. "In order to play video games I really have to work hard and make money." As for Cheung Man Sha, she revealed that she and Beanies member Jaime Cheung Tin Wing created 4 songs for the movie. She was also interested in acting, as last year she co-starred in the movie JI HUP CHONG SI (CORPSE IN A CARDBOARD BOX) with MIRROR member Edan Lui Cheuk On. Did she play the "dead body"? She said, "I played a 'corpse's' friend, but I don't mind playing a corpse. I want to try any role." * (2025/11/06) Shu Qi's first written and directed movie GIRL held its Hong Kong premiere in Tsim Sha Tsui the night before (4th). Her husband Stephen Fung Tak Lun wore the same promotional sweatshirt as his wife to support the film in a fully sweet gesture. The editor of the film William Chang Suk Ping, Kenny Bee (Chung Chun To), Ray Lui Leung Wai, Candy Yu On On and other friends in the business arrived to show their support, but did not accept an interview. Shu Qi laughed and said that the box office pressure of a first time director was high, and she would have to wait 10 years to direct again. She revealed that Fung Tak Lun has once questioned her. In addition to being selected for the Venice Film Festival, GIRL also won the "Best Director Award" at the 30th Busan International Film Festival. Away from the public eye for a long time, Shu Qi revealed that she was inspired when having coffee with director Hou Hsiao-hsien. "Director Hou suggested that I might as well try to direct and incorporate some childhood experiences." She admitted that the biggest pressure to be a director came from the box office, and the most difficult part of the directing process was to recreate the feeling of the late 80s of the last century. Even the train station in the film had to be rebuilt. Was she confident about the box office? Shu Qi smiled and said that she was not confident. "The film has gone through a round of publicity, now I am calmer. Because the Hokkien dialect is spoken in the film, I hope that Hong Kong audiences will be engaged while watching it. Ultimately it would be a literary film, with the speed the audience watches movies with they might not be used to watching it. However this film is very sincere, and a lot of thought has been put into restoring the atmosphere of the 80s of the last century. The audience might see what they saw in their childhood in the movie, so they should be able to relate." She said that when writing the script, because she did not want to be chauvinistic, her younger brother in real life became a younger sister in the film. She said: "When I turn my younger brother into a younger sister, I have to change all the other characters. This time I talk about domestic violence when I was a child, my father drank, and my mother slapped me at school. Everything else was made up." Shu Qi admitted that under time and pressure, she was able to shoot what she wanted this time thanks to the staff in front of and behind the scenes who were so professional. In addition (William) Chang Suk Ping's post- production editing was good, so the movie should be pretty entertaining. Was she reminded the unhappy memories from her childhood when directing? Shu Qi said no, instead felt that the script was well written. "Everyday after writing I would go home and have a drink, then read the script from beginning to end. I would say to myself: Why did I write so well?" Was she drunk? She denied being drunk, but found that she had empathy for the role of the mother in the film. She would be very considerate, because sometimes knowing about it and experiencing it would be two different things. She also praised that the era was not easy for the women of that era. Since her directing debut received good results, would she direct again? Shu Qi sighed and said that if she wanted to write and direct again, she might have to wait ten years. Has her husband Stephen Fung Tak Lun given any comments on the film? She admitted that he has questioned her before. "When my husband read the script, it was not an official draft and had no dialogue. It was just a few thin pieces of paper. Then he asked me how would I shoot it? I said it's my style, you won't get it. (Have you asked your husband for advice?) We have different paths; his is a commercial film, and mine is a literary film. Then my husband said, 'Hahaha! You deserve what you get!'" Shu Qi admitted that being a director was very different from being an actor, of course being a director is very hard. She also laughed that her husband Fung Tak Lun is also an actor now. When asked why she did not invite good sisters in the business to perform? Shu Qi bluntly said that she has never thought about it, because she wanted to find younger actor to play the role of mother in the play and the good sisters in the business were about the same age as herself. If she had to she might as well perform herself, but she stressed that it was not because her sisters in the business were not young. In reality would you want to be a mother? Shu Qi bluntly said that she would go with the flow, but she was almost at that age. She was still young. Shu Qi smiled and said, "50 years old is not very old, OK! (You can still have children at 58!) That's right." Speaking of her husband Fung Tak Lun claiming to be Stephen Yoshi, Shu Qi smiled and said she did not know and instead asked reporter who Tyson Yoshi was. As for Fung Tak Lun jokingly pointed out that she has won too many awards and they had no place to put them, would she needed to renovate her home to display awards? She laughed and said that she had more dolls at home than awards. * (2025/11/06) Thai actor Mario Maurer and Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin (Ah Sa) have collaborated in the movie 77 HEARTWARMING (GUM DONG TA 77 CHI). Yesterday (5th) the two met again at a clothing brand event. The two bought shawls together as Christmas gifts. Ah Sa said that she would give shawls engraved with their names to her good sisters, while Mario felt that as gifts to mommy in winter they would be extra warm. When asked if Ah Sa wanted to give gifts to her beloved in addition to giving Christmas gifts to her sisters? She smiled and replied, "I'll answer this question later, I want to have some secrets." In other words she only had a secret because she had a new relationship? She smiled and said, "Yes, you get it, smart boy." Has she already started a new relationship? She pretended to be mysterious and said she did not know. Perhaps she could not make it public yet? She finally said, "Let it be, one day I will." Would she not talk about her relationship until her birthday? She smiled bitterly and said, "One day." Ah Sa revealed that actually the brand invited her to dinner with Mario, Cecilia Choi Sze Wan and Jeffrey Ngai Chun Sun. During the dinner Ah Sa and Mario talked about the current downturn in the film market in Hong Kong and Thailand, and movies were rarely starting production. Ah Sa has not made a movie for almost a year since last year's Lunar New Year film, but she felt that even if the market has not been good she could not just stop. Thus recently she went to find someone to write a script and prepare for the future. She pointed out that when the market was good, pre production to production start would be completed very quickly. Now they could reserve more time to refine it. Has she participated in writing the script? She laughed and said, "I'm useless, but when I thought of something I would tell the screenwriter and the director. It used to be just talk; but now when I talk, if I feel the idea would work I would write it and put it into practice." Would she be an investor? She said that she would look for investment before deciding, but writing a script required money since she did not want to make people work for nothing. Hence she would cover the cost first, and currently two scripts in the works. The 22nd of this month would be Ah Sa's 43rd birthday. She revealed that she has started to celebrate at the end of last month and cut three cakes. For this year's birthday she would celebrate C Kwan @ Fama, who also has a birthday on the same day. She laughed and said that after many years of talking about celebrating together, it would finally happen. She would play games, play mahjong and sing to spend the day together. She pointed out that If C Kwan had to perform on their birthday, he would ask the audience to wish her a happy birthday. As for Mario, he would stay for three days in Hong Kong and would travel to Hong Kong with his family for Christmas in December. He planned to buy dolls in Mong Kok and Causeway Bay. Mario revealed that his movie "TIGER" would open in Thailand, and it would also be his first dark action movie. Thus he has trained for two weeks before the performance to learn horseback riding, shooting and action training, of which the production took four months to complete. Choi Sze Wan appeared in Hong Kong for the first time after her wedding with Terrance Lau Chun Him. Would they go through the belated marriage processes? She said, "I am not telling you, but we wouldn't hold a banquet. We already invited family and close friends to the wedding. (Are you used to being called Mrs. Lau yet?) Not yet. Ah Him's s are also Mrs. Lau. I absolutely wouldn't mind calling people who like Ah Him Mrs. Lau, I have always supported one husband, multiple wives. The most important is for them to like Ah Him." Bodies hang precariously from the windows in a tangle of flesh and blood that soon leaves one man dead, while the other coolly walks away, shrugging off just another day in the life of a trained assassin. Known only as No. 4, this bleach-blond, stone-faced killer soon finds himself in Japan, where a seemingly straightforward assignment quickly spirals into a breathless game of cat-and-mouse with the Yakuza's deadliest foot soldiers. No. 4's client, a young woman with a personal vendetta against the city’s most notorious crime syndicate, ropes him into becoming her unwitting accomplice in a game of revenge that leaves them both out of their depth with a bounty on their heads. As their relationship evolves from professional to personal, they are left with no choice but to fight side by side if they are to survive the next 72 desperate hours. Wearing his influences proudly on his sleeve, first-time director NJO steers a classic gun-toting tale of heroic bloodshed into a head-on collision with a sleek, katana-wielding crime story of honour, betrayal, camaraderie, and vengeance. Drenched in neon and buffed to a shimmering polish, ROAD TO VENDETTA owes an inescapable debt to the works of John Woo, Johnnie To, Kinji Fukasaku, and Takashi Miike, even as it doffs its cap to the Hollywood homages—from KILL BILL to JOHN WICK—that have forged this path ahead of it. The result is a composed and enthralling calling card from an emerging new talent, paired with an agile, unflinching leading man, who together make an unstoppable pair. (JAMES MARSH) [ CINEMA CITY ] In Asia, a mysterious assassin organization operates under the guise of a noodle shop hidden in a bustling city, serving as a haven for killers. A girl who doesn't show emotions, Hsiao-lee lives with her abusive alcoholic father, harsh hairstylist mother, and a younger sister who monopolizes their mother’s love. They are all crammed in a small apartment atop a building, reachable only by steep stairs. When her father smashes household items and strikes her mother, Hsaio-lee can only retreat to a corner of the closet -- her only private space—and have nightmares. One day, she meets Li-li, a transfer student from an American school, and begins dreaming of escape. Set in 1988, Girl transports audience to those times through evocative colors and tightly constructed mise-en-scene. Hsiao-lee's mother, credited only as 'Woman,' is unable to escape from the past wounds that define her present. Her wounds are directly passed down to Hsiao-lee, creating new ones. Girl builds an intricate narrative by layering the characters' concentrated emotions and their clashes. This narrative grows even more powerful through the actors’ detailed performances and a camera that tenaciously delves into cramped spaces. In Manila, Yoji meets Angel, Minerva's conflicted 21-year-old daughter. A Japino rejected by her Japanese father, she finds herself at a crossroads post-graduation. Like Yoji, Angel has also just witnessed death, but the kind that's taking over the seedy parts of Manila. Opening October 5 2025 at the Vancouver International Film Festival Opening at October 23rd at the 22nd Hong Kong Asian Film Festival (10.22-11.09) [ BROADWAY CIRCUIT ] In the often overlooked, aging neighborhoods of Scarborough, Ontario, four Hong Kong immigrants who arrived in the 1990s quietly unravel in middle age. Once a rising star in Hong Kong, a devoted carer for her elderly mother, a single mother struggling to make ends meet, and a widower yearning for connection – they each clutch fading fragments of dignity, community, and hope in a place as worn and forgotten as they are. The film portrays these fragile souls reaching out for connection – and discovering how far loneliness can stretch. Growing up within this immigrant community, the director witnessed firsthand the resilience of immigrants, creating a poignant meditation on displacement, aging, and the delicate threads that bind us all. Vancouver International Film Festival [ VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2025 ] Timothy Yeung's film is a story of big losses, small triumphs, and moments of grace amid the grind of capitalism — in other words, life itself. Four Hong Kong immigrants are living lives of desperation in Scarborough, Ontario: Dan was a pop singer on the rise before his move to Canada, now he's barely scraping by; Eva is a lonely woman whose commitment to her aging mother has held her back in life; Fan is a part-time sex worker struggling to break into real estate; Tony is an aging widower whose factory job is at risk. Through these characters, Yeung explores diasporic alienation, economic hardship, and social isolation. His film is rich in cultural specificity, but that never obstructs his wider view. Building outwards from private hopes and personal pain, he creates a rich social document that cradles within it four precious human portraits. Tam, Yeung, Lee, and Wong are superb — their performances ring with commitment and authenticity. BLACK SHOWMAN d. Bodies hang precariously from the windows in a tangle of flesh and blood that soon leaves one man dead, while the other coolly walks away, shrugging off just another day in the life of a trained assassin. The documentary is a wistful look at the unstoppable machine of urban development and an old-school business has tried to withstand the flow of time. CHA GUO d. Daphné Mandel, Guy Bertrand Rating : I Length : 37 mins. Opening July 26 2025 [ BROADWAY CIRCUIT ] Nestled between the skyscrapers of Hong Kong, housing some of high finance's most creative minds, and the gleaming glass and steel boxes of Shenzhen, China's Silicon Valley where the future is being built, lies a hidden world no less exceptional. In this lost country backwater of mountains and vegetable fields, factories still manufacture soy sauce in century old clay pots; Kenny hand makes concrete spacers that hold up some of the world's longest suspension bridges. Cha Guo shines light on the lives of the villagers, craftsmen, farmers and business owners who make up this local village's close-knit community. The people’s philosophy and signature are their resilience and their dedication. They embody "Made in Hong Kong" over generations. Cha Guo celebrates the heroes of Hong Kong and the fabric of what makes it and its people synonymous with warmth and the ubiquitous "can do" attitude. The title Cha Guo embodies the many narratives that connect older generations to the younger through the sharing of something savory and heart-warming. Cha guo is a homemade Chinese tea cake traditionally shared at family gatherings and celebrations. The Directors, Daphné Mandel and Guy Bertrand, set out not only to document this village life and heritage but also to capture its distinctly Hong Kong spirit. GAMER GIRLS Can : Din Gaing Nui Hai d. Bodies hang precariously from the windows in a tangle of flesh and blood that soon leaves one man dead, while the other coolly walks away, shrugging off just another day in the life of a trained assassin. To exact her vengeance, she spares no expense in hiring the assassin and attempts to enlist No. 4 in her grand revenge plan, only for their actions to inadvertently provoke a relentless pursuit by the yakuza, putting both their lives in danger... Opening November 4 2025 (PREVIEW) Opening November 6 2025 Trailer : https://youtu.be/YsTTlem0Apg [ 30TH BUSAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ] Hsiao-lee smiles only twice in the entire film -- when she goes to karaoke with Li-li, and when Li-li returns after a prolonged absence. Writer-director Shu Qi proves her directorial prowess in this film, successfully announcing herself as a promising new director. Opening October 30 2025 Trailer : https://youtu.be/55MGF0stYzk [ BROADWAY CIRCUIT ] Three years ago, during a night of typhoon, bomb disposal expert Song KangRen had acted upon a threat in a cinema bombing. Proceeding without being instructed by commander Li Jie, he went single-handedly to the scene and successfully defused the device. But unknown to him, a second bomb hidden in a nearby department store exploded later on, resulting in mass casualties and over a hundred wounded. Though eulogized as a national hero, the immense guilt drove him to resign, and his wedding ceremony to his fiancée Huang Xin was indefinitely put on hold. Today, three years later, a memorial event reunites the past tragedy participants. Song, Huang Xin, and her mother board a southbound high- speed train—only to be caught in yet another bomb crisis. An explosive has been planted on the train, and with just 96 minutes before it reaches the final station, Song must cooperate with the police to stop disaster from striking once again. Opening October 16 2025 Teaser : https://youtu.be/PVFtuiHaTOQ [ BROADWAY CIRCUIT ] You Man-su, a specialist in paper manufacturing with 25 years of experience, is so satisfied with life that he can truthfully tell himself, "I've got it all." While happily passing his days with his wife Miri, their two children and two dogs, Man-su is suddenly informed by his company that he has been fired. "We're sorry. We have no other choice." Feeling shocked as if his head had been cut off by an ax, Man-su vows to find himself a new job within the next three months for the sake of his family. Despite his firm resolve to turn his life around, Man-su spends over a year drifting from one job interview after another, and working at a retail store. He eventually finds himself in danger of losing the very house that he struggled so hard to buy. Desperate, he visits Moon Paper out of the blue and tries to hand over his CV, but he just ends up getting humiliated by line manager Choi Sun-chul. Man-su knows he is better qualified than anyone to work at Moon Paper, so he comes to a certain decision. 'If there is no opening for me, I'll just have to get hired by creating an opening.' Denji worked as a Devil Hunter for the yakuza, trying to pay off the debt he inherited from his parents, until the yakuza betrayed him and had him killed. As he was losing consciousness, Denji's beloved chainsaw-powered devil-dog, Pochita, made a deal with Denji and saved his life. This fused the two together, creating the unstoppable Chainsaw Man. Now, in a brutal war between devils, hunters, and secret enemies, a mysterious girl named Reze has stepped into his world, and Denji faces his deadliest battle yet, fueled by love in a world where survival knows no rules.
