MISCELLANEOUS * (2025/03/18) The "49th Hong Kong International Film Festival" (HKIFF49) press conference was held yesterday at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center. This year's "Filmmaker in Focus" Louis Koo Tin Lok, "Film Festival Ambassador" Angela Yuen Lai Lam and Hong Kong International Film Festival Association Chairman Wilfred Wong Ying Wai kicked off the event. THE BRIGHTEST WORLD and PAVANE FOR AN INFANT were selected as the opening films at the same time. This year's festival would be held from April 10th to 21st under the theme of "Dialogue with the Festival", featuring nearly 200 films from 69 regions and countries, including 6 world premieres, 2 international premieres and 52 Asian premieres, with more than 300 screenings. The audience would also have the chance to meet and interact with many renowned international filmmakers. In addition, the films MONTAGES OF A MODERN MOTHERHOOD (FU DUK BUT), VALLEY IN THE SHADOW OF DEATH (BUT SAT JI JUI) and the documentary NEVER TOO LATE (JUI LIU) would also be screened during the festival. Some of the actors also attended the press conference Wong Ying Wai said that the HKIFF49 would kick off with a double shot, with the opening films including THE BRIGHTEST SUN by Japanese director Tetsuya Nakashima and PAVANE FOR AN INFANT by Malaysian director Chong Keat-aun. Directed by a Norwegian director, DREAMS (SEX LOVE) won the Golden Bear Award for Best Film at the Berlin International Film Festival and was selected as the closing film. 10 films of the "Filmmaker in Focus" Koo Tin Lok would also be screened at the festival. Koo Tin Lok said on stage that he felt honored and happy to be a "Filmmaker in Focus", and that his most important responsibility was to promote Hong Kong films to audiences around the world. Among the 10 films screened would be NAKED AMBITION (HO CHING), DRUG WAR (DUK JIN), RETRIBUTION (YI OI), PARADOX (SAT POR LONG. TAM LONG), and WARRIORS OF FUTURE (MING YUT JIN GEI); all works that he was satisfied with from his three different stages. The "Festival Ambassador" Yuen Lai Lam said that she was both happy and nervous. The role also made her reflect on her relationship with film. In the past her love for film was purer, feeling that it was time to take on the responsibility of promoting and sharing films. When asked about his view on the film industry outlook, he said, "These three or four years would be years of change and would welcome a great correction. Filmmakers must meet the audience and make changes." Regarding the current recession of the Hong Kong film market, Goo Jai pointed out that the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers would start making two films every year, now there would be an opportunity to cut one but he would try his best to fight for it. "Actually both films together would be over HK$ 10 million in investment, it's not a lot. However the current market is too hard to deal with. It's not too ideal! (When wo you decide to cut budget or stop production?) It's not my decision. It would depend on the market trend and change." The output of his film company would be the same as before, with an average of two or three films a year and still many works that have not yet been released. They would all depend on the market trend to determine the release time. Would any of them be big productions like TWILIGHT OF WARRIORS: WALLED IN (GAU LUNG SING JAI JI WAI SING)? "I don't know yet, let's see if the scripts would make it in time." He was also happy that TWILIGHT received Best Editing and Best Production Design at this year's Asian Film Awards, because this was an international award. He revealed that TWILIGHT was still in release in Japan, the cumulative box office has exceeded 300 million yen. He would very gladly promote in Japan again. Some said that Japan's barbecue pork rice was also sold out because of the film? Goo Jai felt that promoting Hong Kong culture through film was a good thing. Speaking of Sean Lau Ching Wan's confidence in Hong Kong films at the Asian Film Awards Ceremony the night before, Goo Jai joked, "I have confidence in Hong Kong films too, but I am not confident in the economy! Because the box office of this year's Lunar New Year releases has never been so low. (Disappointed?) I don't get to say disappointed or not, the market needs time to recover. Right now it's 'moving', getting to move is better than not getting to move. The pandemic was the worst, everything came to a stop." He believed that many factors would be needed for the recovery of the film market. In addition to new changes in films, there could be more different direction films and the economic environment must also be considered. What else could the government help with? Goo Jai said, "They have a lot of things to deal with first." He has performed in 100 movies, and the president of the Performing Artist Guild and the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers. Has he helped many filmmakers? Goo Jai said, "It wasn't helping. As a part of the industry, everyone would work hard to make film its best. My deepest impression is during the pandemic, film came to a complete halt but everyone still had to live. So we made a movie to raise fund and give away money for the industry to get over the hard time." What other roles or types of films he would want to try? Koo Tin Lok admitted that he has even made the genre he wanted to make the most, science fiction. However there would still be many more, even challenge a fully nude performance. He said, "I was once asked if I could perform fully naked. I wasn't able to before, but now I think this generation has become less concerned with that. However fully naked would be rated category III, I am afraid the children wouldn't be able to see that!" As a new actor Yuen Lai Lam said that if she could bring out the expression of art, she would not mind showing her body. However she has not have these opportunities for the time being, so she would not think much about it. She also expressed her gratitude that since she entered the industry, she kept having works for the audience. She and Taiwan male god Greg Hsu starred in the romantic film released a new post. Greg Hsu's line, "If you don't come over, I will fly there to find you!" struck fans straight in their hearts. The film has been confirmed for an autumn release this year. "Movies I performed in earlier would gradually released, currently some are in negotiation, from both Hong Kong and Taiwan." PAVANE FOR AN INFANT actors Fish Liew Chi Yu, Natalie Hsu (Hui Yan Yi) and Ben Yuen Fu Wah shared their production experience. Liew Chi Yu revealed that the film was about the abandoned infant issues in Malaysia. She played an abandoned infant center volunteer. Although she was Malaysian, she has not spoken Malay for a very long time and needed more practice. Hui Yan Yi as an unwed Mama and Yuen Fu Wah as the villain had to learn Malay before e production, luckily the staff has prepared recordings of their lines for them. * (2025/03/18) Sammo Hung Kam Bo, Gardner Tse Kwan Ho and director Soi Cheang Pou Soi attended the launch ceremony of the Academy of the Performing Arts's 40th anniversary at "Hong Kong International Film and TV Market 2025" yesterday and served as special officiating guests. Alumni Ling Man Lung, Ng Siu Hin, Tyson Chak Hoi Tai, director Sunny Chan Wing Sun and director Kearen Pang Sau Wai also attended. At the event, Hung Kam Bo, Cheang Pou Soi and Tse Kwan Ho shared their experience over the years. An honorary doctor of the Academy of Performing Arts, Hung Kam Bo said that education was very useful. He regretted that he did not study hard when he was a child, spending 3 years at second grade of primary school and then dropping out. "So when I received the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts honorary doctorate degree, I was very ashamed." Cheang Pou Soi pointed out that graduates used to encounter rejection after entering the industry, but now they also understood that they had to suffer. The jury president of the Asian Film Awards, Hung Kam Bo said that he was satisfied with the results of the previous night. However he admitted that his predictions were not correct. Speaking of the movie market, he hoped that it could continue to be good. He felt sad when he saw the current movie market, just as the citizens will feel sad when they see the deserted market. "My heart aches very much. Not just the film market is poor, even the market is very poor. I constantly go food shopping at the market. It used to be full of people, now it's cold and empty. Everyone's hearts in the city are aching." Soi Cheang Pou Soi said that he was happy that his TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN (GAU LUNG SING JAI JI WAI SING) won two technical awards at the Asian Film Awards the night before. He felt very happy and thought that it has already answered for itself. He also hoped that it would perform well at the Hong Kong Film Awards. "I have confidence for the Hong Kong Film Awards, and I pick (Louis) Koo Tin Lok and (Philip) Ng Wan Lung." He also revealed that the prequel and the final chapter of TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS were being prepared together. There is already a story, only the details are missing. Although the film market was poor now, many people also thought that it was risky to start production. He believed that whether it was a blockbuster or a small film, it would be risky and everyone's pressure was the same. Tse Kwan Ho said that even if the market was not good, he would still keep going, do as much as he could. If there was no job he would study to improve himself. If there was no job, he could also try the stage, so as to exercise his skills. He said, "I hope you will stick to it. Although you are confused, you should not give up." * (2025/03/18) Heavenly King Leon Lai Ming as the Entertainment Expo ambassador attended the Hong Kong Entertainment Expo 2025 launch ceremony. He said that every year he would be asked if he would have time to lend a helping hand, and he would happen to have time. Hence he has been the ambassador year after year. He encouraged the industry to wait for opportunities. He believed that every colleague is working hard, but would have to wait for timing and opportunity. He believed that in any industry being willing to work hard would achieve good results. "Actually this year has had many decent films, like THE LAST DANCE (POR. DEI YUK) had very high box office in Hong Kong, TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN (GAU LUNG SING JAI JI WAI SING) too, and the mainland produced NE ZHA 2. They have been greatly encouraging. I believe that in any position, as long as you are willing to work hard you would have great performance." Leon also encouraged young people who wanted to enter the business to have patience, be willing to innovate and wait for chances. "No one knows when this business would have opportunities. You have to keep working hard, so that one day when you are ready, you can grasp the lucky star as soon as it appears." After the ceremony, Lai Ming quickly left after a group photo with the guests. When a male guest rushed up for a selfie with Lai Ming but the staff stopped him. Lai Ming also declined politely and quickly went back stage. Josie Ho Chiu Yi and her husband Conroy Chan Tsz Chung yesterday, together with their new actors Iman Taheri, Danny Pang Fat and other directors, attended the "Hong Kong Entertainment Expo 2025" to promote the new films THE MAGE (SUP FONG FAT SI) and MOTHER TONGUE, as well as announced the future development plans of the 20 year old 852 Film Company like MY FUNNY VALENTINE, BATHORY, MACAU REDUX and THE CONNOISSEURS (DOH BO GWAI JOOK). All the films would star Ho Chiu and Iman. THE MAGE and THE CONNOISSEURS' director Pang Fat praised Iman's outstanding performance and Ho Chiu for her eye for talent. Iranian-Canadian Iman also participated. For this newcomer who was once Chi Chung's personal doctor, Chiu Yi was full of confidence. She said that they have signed a contract for more than ten years, praising him as handsome, smart, mature, well-behaved, studious, and even a poet. She even jokingly promise him to film a 12 hour unit. The doctor needed to work for dozens of hours continuously in case of emergencies at any time, so being an actor was easier than a doctor. She successfully lobbied him to set aside being a doctor and step into the entertainment industry, and would be ready to shoot 5 movies and songs for him in the future. Iman said that he has not quit his doctor job. "A doctor for a day is a doctor for life, it's just that I am not working s one right now. If the show business development fails, I can be a doctor again." Who was more handsome between Iman or her husband Chiu Yi? Chiu Yi immediately said, "The two are different types, Iman is gentleman type and Chi Chung is the sunny type." Chi Chung quipped, "Still Sunny? I should be the onion type, haha. However Iman is really good, not only in appearance, but also in connotation. (Have you taught Iman how to act?) I'm a mediator when they have any argument." Chi Chung also revealed the good news that he no longer needed to go to the United States for surgery and could start to resume work. Ho Chiu said that she would consider making a movie for him, and he joked that he would sign a contract with his wife's film company, and the three of them would film together. This year would mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the film company, and the company's senior management presented golden Pixiu to Iman on stage to wish the development of the company, and then toasted with everyone to celebrate. * (2025/03/17) The 18th Asian Film Awards Ceremony was held last night at the Grand Theatre of the Xiqu Centre in the West Kowloon Cultural District, with a total of 16 major awards and 5 special awards presented at the ceremony. Best Film went to the Indian film ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT. Daihachi Yoshida with TEKI COMETH won Best Director. Indian actress Shahana Goswami won Best Actress for the film SANTOSH, famous movie star Sean Lau Ching Wan won Best Actor for the Hong Kong film PAPA, and another high-profile Hong Kong film TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN (GAU LUNG SING JAI JI WAI SING) won two awards at this year's awards ceremony. This year's awards ceremony was attended by entertainers from all over Asia, including jury president Sammo Hung Kam Bo, Koji Yakusho, Ann Hui On Wah, Ng See Yuen, Stanley Kwan Kam Peng, as well as directors Sunny Chan Wing Sun, Daiji Matsunaga, Nick Cheuk Yik Him and Lawrence Kan Kwan Chun. He said that he would like to thank director Philip Yung Tsz Kwong for his trust in him, as well as co-star Jo Koo (Kok ho Lam), his on screen daughter and the Best Newcomer nominee Dylan So Man To. He encouraged So Man To and said, "Although you didn't win the award, actually I have never been nominated for Best New Actor so you are already very good." Ching Wan finally said that he was still very confident in Hong Kong films, and hoped that the industry will continue to work together. Ching Wan said in an interview that the actors he worked with in the film always called him PAPA when they saw him, and he was able to win the award because of these "family members". Ching Wan hoped that everyone will continue to support him and Hong Kong films. He thought that Hong Kong films had many different subjects, and there were many new directors appearing, so there would be no need to worry. He still had confidence in Hong Kong films. He joked, "I was only nervous when I knew there were cheers. I remember the first time I won the Hong Kong Film Awards I heard a lot of cheers, which made me nervous and moved. I hope the cheers are dedicated to Hong Kong films." Shahana Goswami rose to the throne of the Best Actress with the movie SANTOSH, and pointed out that it was a great challenge for her to make the film. Because she did not want the audience to feel that she was acting, she had to act like she was not acting. Hence this award was a great affirmation for her, proving that her acting skills were not bad; she laughed and said that the mood of winning the award was very unreal, and she felt like an actress acting, because her mind was blank. She was very happy to attend the award ceremony and had a good feeling about Hong Kong. The composer of the original soundtrack for the domestic animated film NE ZHA 2, Hong Kong musician Chu Wan Pin teamed up with Hong Kong artist Jonathan Wong Chee-Hynn to kick off the award ceremony with a wonderful instrumental performance, showcasing the infinite possibilities of Asian film music. Chu Wan Pin won the Best Original Music Award for the movie THE LAST DANCE (POR. DEI YUK). He said in an interview that because he had to make an opening performance for the awards ceremony, he had to practice kung fu and play erhu, which he had never tried before. In addition he would inevitably be a little nervous when performing on stage, and then went on stage to accept the award; so when he was interviewed backstage, his body was still shaking. Speaking of the music of THE LAST DANCE, he said that the creative space was very broad. In order to match the plot many different types of music were used, including Taoist and traditional funeral music; the most challenging part was all the actors have superb acting skills, and each of them has good micro-expressions. Every time the actors change their expressions, the music was used to coordinate. He said that in the future, erhu and film music will develop in parallel, just as the two film scores of THE LAST DANCE and NE ZHA 2 both used erhu. The former took nearly 4 months to create, and NE ZHA 2 even took two years. He was glad to see that both films had excellent results. Tang Wei gave her thank you speech in three languages when she received the Excellence in Asian Cinema Award, saying that she has come to Hong Kong with her family a few days before the award ceremony. As soon as she stepped out of the airport, she already smelled the familiar scent of Hong Kong and felt very relaxed. She also took the opportunity to look for food all over and revealed that her daughter loved to sit in the front row of the double decker bus. She introduced the scenery along the route to her daughter. Tang Wei thanked the event for presenting the award to her, directors, actors and staff who have worked with her. She was very happy to meet outstanding Asian filmmakers at the ceremony, and she also thanked her family for their continued support. Tang Wei said in an interview that she was very happy to receive the award. She could sit with filmmakers from different places at the award ceremony, so the atmosphere was very special. She saw many nominated film clips on the spot, which let her know that she still has a lot of room for growth in film. What other roles would she want to challenge? "No matter what the role is, I want to be immersed in the role." She says. She also pointed out that Hong Kong has brought her a lot of memories. Every time she comes back, she would revisit her favorite places and foods. The self admitted foodie said that she likes to eat noodles, sweet soup, put chai ko, seafood, etc. Winners of the 18th Asian Film Awards https://www.afa-academy.com/awards-en/ Best Film: ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT Best Director: Daihachi Yoshida (TEKI COMETH) Best Actor: Sean Lau Cing Wan (PAPA) Best Actress: Shahana Goswami (SANTOSH) Best Supporting Actor: Lee Kang-sang (STRANGER EYES) Best Supporting Actress: Yang Kuei-Mei (YEN AND AI-LEE) Best Cinematography: Hong Kyeong-pyo (HARBIN) Best New Director: Sandhya Suri (SANTOSH) Best Newcomer: Hayato Kurihara (HAPPYEND) Best Editing: Cheung Ka Fai, (TWLIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN) Best Original Music: Chu Wan Pin (THE LAST DANCE) Best Screenplay: Mohammad Rasoulof (THE SEED OF THE SACRED FIG) Best Visual Effects: Kim Shin-chul, Daniel Son Seung-hyun (EXHUMA) Best Costume Design: Choi Yoon-sun (EXHUMA) Best Sound: Tu Duu-Chih, Tu Tse-Kang (STRANGER EYES) Best Production Design: Kenneth Mak Kwok Keung, Ambrose Chau Sai Hung (TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN) Excellence in Asian Cinema Award: Tang Wei, Jang Dong-gun Lifetime Achievement Award: Koji Yakusho AFA New Generation Award: Wu Kangren Rising Star Award: Koki Highest grossing Asian film of 2024: YOLO * (2025/03/17) The red carpet session held before the awards ceremony was also star-studded. When Eddie Peng Yu-yan, Thai star Win, mainland actor Yu Shi, Japanese actor Masaki Okada, etc. appeared, screaming arose again and again. Tang Wei, Sammo Hung Kam Bo and his wife Joyce Godenzi (Go Lai Hung) appeared in the finale. Away from Hong Kong film for a while, Tang Wei said frankly that she would look forward to making another. "If the director thinks that there is a role for me, it is equivalent to 70% success, because I really haven't made a Hong Kong movies in a very long time." When asked about the willingness of Tang Wei, an international movie star, to reduce her salary, she said, "Being an actor is very passive, I am waiting for good roles and teams. These are the most important, and the rest are secondary." As for whether she will make another Korean film, she said that she has no plans for the time being. Would her husband Kim Tae-yong, a Korean director, start another production? She sighed, "My husband is a little slow, and the last one was more than ten years (ago); but he has always worked slowly and delivered fine goods, and he likes to share his life for everyone to see." "Malaysian Goddess" Lin Minchen dressed up sensually and walked the red carpet with her sister Brandy Lim and director Sunny Chan Wing Sun. Lin Minchen said that it is not the first time that the sisters have walked the red carpet together. As for whether her sister would enter the industry, it depends on whether there would be a chance. She joked that she could ask director Chan Wing Sun. Minchen said that the stylist designed her look, because it used light weight and reusable environmentally friendly materials she was very light on her feet. Did Minchen had to work out before hand? She said, "I don't have time, but I've always worked hard to stay fit. I had to eat breakfast early today (yesterday)." Speaking of reports that her rumored boyfriend Edan Lui Cheuk On suddenly returned to Hong Kong early to meet her during the filming of a variety show in South Korea a few days ago, did he could have breakfast with her? She joked, "We didn't eat together, he didn't ask me." (Edan blew off his teammates to return to Hong Kong early?) I don't know, he may have other things going on. I can't give any answer on behalf of anyone." Lau Ching Wan and his son So Man To in PAPA competed for "Best Actor" and Best Newcomer respectively, and they walked the red carpet together. Ching Wan was in a relaxed mood, but So Man To bluntly said that he was nervous. Did Ching Wan help So Man To relieve the pressure? He did not think So Man To needed to relieve the stress. "Kids, let them think how they should think, nervous will be nervous, and happy will be happy." So Man To joked that he was able to digest Ching Wan's words. As a guest presenter, MC Cheung Tin Fu attended the Asian Film Awards for the first time. He said that he saw many idols he has never seen before, and he approached them to "collect the stamps", including Lau Ching Wan. MC laughed and said, "I was afraid of disturbing people, because I had eye contact with Ching Wan when I passed by, so I came forward to say hello and took a photo." * (2025/03/16) The film LITTLE RED SWEET (HUNG DAU) held a charity screening yesterday, with director Vincent Chow Ying and two actors Simon Yam Tat Wah (Brother Wah) and Fung So Bo attending, while the Chief Executive's wife and The Spastics Association of Hong Kong patron Ms. Janet Lee Lam Lai Sim even presented souvenirs to the film team. Brother Wah revealed that CYPRUS TIGER (DONG FONG LO FU), the Hong Kong film he starred in decades ago, was still popular with foreign audiences. Even filmmakers from Cyprus would talk to him about making a movie at the Hong Kong Entertainment Expo, so that he can once again witness the charm of Hong Kong films. He hoped that the industry will make good use of new technology to continue to develop local films. As the leading actor in the movie, Brother Wah has been thanking the audience with other actors in batches. He has participated in more than ten audience appreciation screenings, and the audience has responded very well. Brother Wah said with a smile that the spring flowers were blooming in March, which was also a good day for the Hong Kong film industry as the annual Hong Kong Entertainment Expo and Hong Kong Film Awards will be held. Brother Wah revealed that in this year's Hong Kong Entertainment Expo, a filmmaker from Cyprus approached him to talk about filming. It turned out that the late director Philip Ko Fei's THE CYPRUS TIGER (DONG FONG LO FU) was filmed in Cyprus. The film made many audiences in European countries also liked Hong Kong movies. After more than 20 years, many locals still liked Hong Kong action movies. Because he was the lead actor of the film, this time local filmmakers came just for him. "This is the charm of film. It can be retained forever, but the action must change. Now we need to be more human in making action scenes, so movies will even be more resilient." However, at the end of the month the former cinema circuit leader Newport Cinema will close. Brother Wah said that he was still optimistic about the future of the film market. "This is the change of the times, everyone is not watching at the great theaters but watching on mobile phones. We have to shoot with new media and new methods, so that the film industry can continue to develop. Hong Kong people must know how to change. Now that new technology is developed, mobile phones can allow people to watch movies in great detail. The transformation of science and technology must be adapted to, rather than continue to stay at the same place, and lead to see new things." For example, Brother Wah pointed out that many cafe stories were filmed with mobile phones. They could have many variations and be rich in Hong Kong characteristics. Hong Kong movies must also be resilient. He also pointed out that the current new directors and actors would be the future of the film industry, and they must be cultivated slowly so that the spirit of Hong Kong films can survive forever. Would he attend his on screen daughter Stephy's Hong Kong Coliseum concert? Yam Tat Wah regrettably expressed that he would have to leave Hong Kong soon and would be unable to attend, but he would send a floral basket to congratulate her. * (2025/03/16) Three nominees for Best Supporting Actor at the 18th Asian Film Awards, Philip Ng Wan Lung, Tommy Chu Pak Hong and Lee Kang-sheng participated in the "Supporting Actors' Home Field" forum the night before to share their acting experiences. Director Lawrence Kan Kwan Chun was the host. Chu Pak Hong and Ng Wan Lung have collaborated on commercials more than 20 years ago. Now they can compete for the supporting actor award together, which feels very fateful. Chu Pak Hong felt that during the performance understanding the script was the most important, only that would you be able to find the characterization of the role. He said, "While making THE LAST DANCE (POR. DEI YUK), I was already very familiar with (Michelle) Wai Sze Nga; but because of the characters we had to deliberately keep our distance. On the set I saw her having a very hard time with the production and was very tired, but I still couldn't go over and comfort her." Ng Wan Lung remembered that he first got business as a stuntman, during the shoot due to nerves he went the wrong director and his neck was caught on the wires. Luckily the masters had experience and directly dropped him onto the ground. He was only frightened but not in danger, but he fainted. Lee Kang-Sheng said that the supporting role was more relaxed and he was able to perform at will. He could even "kill" the lead. In addition he did not need to worry about the box office pressure. He revealed that he went to Brussels on a tour of his play, his body showed signs of a stroke as he was less than mobile on half of his body. The doctor told him that if he continued to perform his life would be at risk, but he insisted on performing. The audience immediately applauded as a salute. All three agreed that whether in leading or supporting roles they hoped to be able to help the film. When everyone made contributions, that movie would be a very entertaining work. Chu Pak Hong has already won the Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild Best Supporting Actor award. He said that he would not be looking at Ng Wan Lung as an opponent at tonight's ceremony. He explained, "Because we all represent Hong Kong, we would be happy when anyone win the award. When someone from Hong Kong people win the award we would be even happier." Was Chu Pak Hong confident about winning? He said that he would leave it up to God, but he also hoped that Michael Hui Koon Man can win the best actor, and will seize the opportunity to take photos with other movie stars for his collection. Last year was a bumper year, Chu Pak Hong also felt that he was lucky. He would remind himself not to be flattered and to continue to work hard to progress. Would he increase his salary after winning the award? He said, "I just want to have a reasonable salary. Now that the industry is in the cold winter, it is already good to have a job. If any new director wants to collaborate, with suitable roles I wouldn't mind reducing the salary." When Ng Wan Lung heard this and said that when he would be a director, he would definitely ask Chu Pak Hong to make a movie. Chu Pak Hong did not celebrate after winning the Directors' Guild Best Supporting Actor. He explained that being able to win the award was already a great celebration, he did not need to make a big deal again. Ng Wan Lung suggested that Chu Pak Hong should celebrate and would not mind paying the bill for him. Chu Pak Hong considered inviting everyone for drinks after hearing it. As for whether Ng Wan Lung was confident of winning the award, he said, "I am very happy to be nominated, I hope that everyone will no longer regard me as a 'puppet' and think that Ng Wan Lung has acting skills." Ng Wan Lung said that the most important was to enjoy the process, like the production and receiving audience recognition. Being nominated was also a happy process. He was grateful that he kept having roles to play and his acting has been noticed. He also pointed out that lately he has been working on an action film, but accidentally injured his posterior muscle. He could only act like he was not in pain, and joked that he relied on acting skills. * (2025/03/15) The Hedwig Tam Sin Yin, Locker Lam Ka Hei, Kaki Shum, Renci Yeung Sze Wing, Ben Yuen Fu Wah and Alan Yeung Wai Lun starred SMASHING FRANK (DOH POR FAT LAN HAK) has been selected for the 22nd Asian Summer Film Festival in Spain and represented Hong Kong films in competition. The film tells the story of the Tam Si Yin played "Kei Yuet", who faced the powerlessness of joining the society, and suddenly had a whim. Instead of formally looking for a job and being a social slave, she might as well control her own destiny, "do the world" in her own way, and create her own career; the idea she comes up with like committing crimes while uploading videos to the internet, creating a response and becomes a "robbery influencer". Kei Yuet is arrested for assault, and when the community service order is executed she meets fellow first time offender Tao Chun (played by Kaki Sham), and Hugo (played by Lam Ka Hei), Kei Yuet's childhood sweetheart. The three form the team "Frank" to rob the rich. Kei Yuet is the leader of Frank. Tam Sin Yin describes the character as cynical but a little calm. Many things upsets her, especially hypocritical and unfair things. "Something happened to Kei Yuet's friend with a rich man, which makes her even more hateful to the rich. She feels that the world is very unfair. She is reckless and impulsive, but she is willing to act for herself and the people she loves, and then seek justice. Lam Ka Hei said, "The character Hugo is a drug dealer, has a playful and naughty personality. After being arrested, he and Kei Yuet received a community service order. Hugo is in love with Kei Yuet, but gets mixed signals from her." Kaki Sham plays Tao Chun, who is a truck driver on the surface, but is actually a small time hood who specializes in helping his partner take candid photos. He said, "My character is more timid and cowardly. From a well-off family, he has been raised as a rule-abiding person since he was a child. Never taking a misstep, he strictly follows the rules and tends to be conservative and introverted." * (2025/03/14) Terrance Lau Chun Him played the role of a psychiatrist Dr. Man in Nick Cheung Ka Fai's new work PEG O' MY HEART (SHOOK MUNG). In the film he constantly fell into uneasy and confused dreams. For an underwater scene, he learned breathing while diving from the film company arranged diving coach. "When I was a child I had swimming lessons, but they were completely different from diving. Holding my breath and breathing underwater, and then floating on the surface all of a sudden, I had difficulties regaining my breath. I really needed to keep practicing, and the coach had to add lead to my feet so I would sink. It was certainly difficult." On the night of the official shoot the temperature plummeted, Lau Chun Him performed at the bottom of the frozen pool, but after filming he still felt that his expression was not good enough. Director Cheung Ka Fai praised his serious attitude towards his work. In order to shoot the this underwater struggle dream scene, Lau Chun Him jumped in and out from the water to and from the bottom of the pool several times. The staff prepared ginger tea, warm water bags, warm blankets, etc., so that he could warm up immediately after getting out of the water. Lau Chun Him said, "The first time I filmed an underwater scene, the temperature dropped suddenly. There was no warm water, which was unexpected. Acting underwater, struggling repeatedly, and with facial expressions were not easy. The hardest thing was the moment I got out of the water, my whole body was wet. The crew had to pull me out of the water. I had to take oxygen every time I got into the water, and I really couldn't breathe for a moment. However, I couldn't stay in the water to act for too long, for fear of lack of oxygen. Fortunately I didn't have to wait for dawn before completing the whole scene, it as an unforgettable New Year's Eve." * (2025/03/14) The Emperor Motion Picture THE LAST DANCE (POR. PAPA's social platform page congratulated Yung Tsz Kwong, "Screenwriter Yung Tsz Kwong has spent more than 10 years brewing the script for PAPA, meticulously presenting a 'PAPA' who has suffered a great change in his state of mind. Hoping that in addition to "questioning" and "resentment", he could also add "let go" and "tolerance", and further explore "compassion" in his work. We are so happy that PAPA can be appreciated by all screenwriter friends! Congratulations again to director and screenwriter Yung Tsz Kwong!" The extended version of THE LAST DANCE would be released on April 4th, Ching Ming Festival. They also had great expectations for the extended version. Performed with Tze Wah and Chu Pak Hong, Kok Tak Chiu said, "It is an honor to be able to see everyone in THE LAST DANCE and become a part of the highest-grossing films!" Playing the brothers of "Tao Sun" in the film, Kaki said, "I am really happy and looking forward to it when I find out that the extended version will be released. The director has said before that he will definitely try his best to come up with an extended version, so I really thank the director; and thank the many viewers who bought tickets to support THE LAST DANCE the most, because it is with their support that this extended version can be officially released." Kaki also said that he was an "iron fan" of Tze Wah, and the opportunity to work together felt like a dream. * (2025/03/13) The new director Siu Koon Ho directed, Fruit Chan Gor produced, Cecilia Yip Tung, Gardner Tse Kwan Ho, Varona Hui Yuet Sheung and Himmy Wong Ting Him starred movie TRUE LOVE, FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE (CHIN CHIN SHUI YUET, adapted from the autobiographical novel "It's Over, It's Fate" by producer and screenwriter Tse Suk Fun. Chan Gor said that the original work was too bland, and he has been entangled in the script for many months. He thought about giving up, which made the lead actress Yip Tung think that the movie was stillborn. Yip Tung supported TRUE LOVE, FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE as a portrait of marriage in Hong Kong, which was by no means ordinary. It expressed the voices of many women, because marriage is very important to women. She has been married to her husband Chan Kwok Hei for 37 years, and said that the way to maintain it was to give each other space. When it came to the Hong Kong film market entering the cold winter period, Chan Gor felt that the market lacked "financier" investment. Coupled with the developed Internet and excessive entertainment, the audience's living habits was difficult to change. Colleagues would only seek life after death. TRUE LOVE, FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE took Hong Kong marriage as the subject, telling the story of Jing Fun (played by Yip Tung) who firmly believes that "you only love once in your life". In the face of her husband Kei Chun (played by Gardner Tse Kwan Ho) cheating and the lack of understanding from her family, she still accompanies her ex- husband through the last part of his life with love. The new film was completely different from Chan Gor's previous films, and he agreed to be the producer all because Tse Suk Fun's enthusiasm moved him. "In order to make her real story into a movie, she went to learn screenwriting and then wrote the novel "It's Over, It's Fate" and released it. Then she found screenwriter Lou Siu Wah to co-write the script of TRUE LOVE, FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE and even sold the house for HK$ 5 million to start the production. I admire her very much." Although the film decided to start production, during the preparation period Chan Gor struggled with whether he should continue; because he usually wrote and directed himself in one go, he knew what he wanted. Lou Shiu Wa and Tse Suk Fun wrote the script as the screenwriter and with her own experience respectively, not from the perspective of the director. They did not consider whether the text could be turned into images and other issues, everyone discussed for many months. He laughed and said, "Yip Tung thought that the movie was stillborn!" He admitted that modern women might not like the female lead Jing Fun's decision not to leave her cheating ex-husband, but if it really happened to them they might make the same choice. "Although I am not married, I am not young either. I have seen countless such things happen. Women would be ruthless when they are upset. After calming down they would be as tolerant as the female lead of this film and be willing to take care of their ex-husband. When I first finished reading the script I thought, 'Wow, how would you shoot that, it's so commonplace'. I can only achieve the extraordinary structurally." Yip Tung liked that TRUE LOVE, FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE for being pure enough,as it only talked about the mental journey and experience of "Jing Fun". "Marriage is very important to women. When a third party appears, how do everyone face and deal with that? Many people think it's a very ordinary thing and doesn't need to be made into a movie, but the story speaks up for a lot of women's hearts." This year is the 37th anniversary of the marriage of Yip Tung and her husband Chan Kwok Hei. Speaking of the way husband and wife get along, she said, "I don't deliberately remember how many years of marriage it has been, the most important thing is to give each other more space. Of course you recognize him as a partner, but he isn't your asset. I want to do more things I like, to grow, then our relationship will be more consolidated." For the whole film to be shot with a mobile phone, Yip Tung admitted that she was not used to it at the beginning and he had to take time to adapt. "Like homework, the mode should be adjusted a little. Don't be obsessed with where the lens and light source are, the most important thing is to do a good job of myself and the family. Leave the rest for the director to capture." Chan Gor said that he was not used to it despite all his experience. "I have always wanted to try to film with mobile phones, because some foreign directors have used mobile phones to shoot movies. After the production wrapped, I feel that the advantage of using a mobile phone to shoot is that it is convenient and fast, but it does not have much benefit in technique. The film industry won't change because of mobile phones because it is already so solid, but it can encourage some young people who are interested in making movies. Under the lack of a budget, they can use this method to shoot." Chan Gor revealed that the shooting technique of TRUE LOVE, FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE was divided into 3 stages. At the beginning with a wide shot, then in the mid range shot, and finally in a big close-up, "Life is like this, at the beginning you feel that the world was so wide that you can't see yourself. By the middle, someone leaves and you slowly take a look at yourself. Then there would be a big close-up of yourself. Jing Fun's emotions are expressed with this structure." The subject of the new film was alternative, Was Chan Gor worried about the box office? He said, "I don't get to worry about that." Louis Koo Tin Lok said earlier that Hong Kong films have entered a cold winter period this year, expected that film productions will be scaled back to a horrifying point, and hoped that the government will help the Hong Kong film industry more. Chan Gor admitted that starting a production was indeed very difficult now, due to the lack of investment from "funders". Coupled with the fact that the novel coronavirus pandemic has caused the public to change their living habits as they fell in love with watch TV and mobile phones at home, it would be difficult to change their desire to go to the theater. He chuckled, "Now we are on our own. This world naturally has people who would be able survive or eliminated, it's the natural order. All we can do is work as much as we can, if no one watches then comes life after death. Actually the government has already helped a lot, some people say that the biggest boss is the government now because the First Feature Film was government funded. If it helps even more I don't know what it can help with?" Yip Tung admitted that the audience has become more and more demanding, and the production must be kept improving. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews . WEN WEI PO, WEN WEI SPECIAL TOPIC, FEBRUARY 9 2025 INSPIRATION FROM THE SUCCESS OF TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN INNOVATION ON THE FOUNDATION OF CLASSIC ACTION FILMS REJUVENATE THE VITALITY OF HONG KONG FILMS News 2025-02-09 04:08:43 News Hong Kong Wen Wei Po News (Reporter Hu Ruozhang reports from Guangzhou) TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN (GAU LUNG SING JAI JI WAI SING) was released in Japan and received more than 100 million yen at the box office, becoming the best Hong Kong film released in Japan in the past five years. The long-lost Hong Kong film boom has also led to the re-creation of films and make Hong Kong food and entertainment popular again. Zhao Weifang, director of the Film and Television Research Institute of the China Art Research Institute, says that the film counterattacked the mainland's "May Day" word of mouth and market last year. This time it is sought after in the overseas Japanese market. This film has a footing as a classic innovated again and obtains decent box office and word of mouth. The success of the film has provided revelation for Hong Kong film innovations, especially key revelation for the action genre film revival. Looking back on the history of Hong Kong films going international, in the 1970s Hong Kong films began to move towards internationalization. The most successful development of the Japanese market was the establishment of Golden Harvest Company, which won the international reputation of Bruce Lee's series of kung fu films; the 1980s to early 1990s was the heyday of Hong Kong films, and the cops and robbers action movies and action comedies shot by Sammo Hung Kam Bo, Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao and others became the gold label of Hong Kong films at that time. At that time Jackie Chan's film SHINJUKU INCIDENT set a box office record of 3 billion yen (about HK$ 150 million) in Japan. The 1984 PROJECT A during its Japanese release earned about 3 billion yen at the box office. So far Jackie Chan's cumulative box office in the Japanese market has exceeded 60 billion yen (about HK$ 3 billion), and Jackie Chan alone accounts for more than half of the total box office of Chinese films in Japan. Jackie Chan movies have also affected the Japanese manga industry, PROJECT A is a Jackie Chan work that has been imitated and paid tribute to by many anime. The author of CRAYON SHIN-CHAN, Yoshito Uso has restored the scene of Jackie Chan falling from the bell tower stroke by stroke in a Crayon Shin-chan Special. Jackie Chan's kung fu comedy DRUNKEN MASTER is the source of inspiration for RANMA, the author directly imitates Jackie Chan's DRUNKEN MASTER with the setting of the protagonist Ranma and many places in the manga; DRAGON BALL has a part in which Master Roshi goes to participate in the martial arts conference under the pseudonym Jackie Chan. The comedy anime GINTAMA portrays action actors Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao and Sammo Hung beautifully. Later, the films of Chow Yun Fat, Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing, and Tony Leung Chiu Wai were also very popular in Japan and South Korea. Since Hong Kong films fell into a low ebb, it has been a long time since Hong Kong films have set off a boom overseas. The anime style highlights exaggeration and explosiveness Zhao Weifang, the director of the Film and Television Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Arts, says, "It is an indisputable fact that the action genre in Chinese films, especially martial arts and kung fu, is declining. However, TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN, as an action genre film that mainly targets the cinema market, is sought after in the market because it has made three innovations on the basis of classics." First of all, how to innovate the action genre? Zhao Weifang says that the direct reason for the recession of action genre films is that the fight scenes and specific moves are too old. Even if the director and creator want to innovate and find another way, but there are still not many that are done well. For example, the mainland spring festival release, the Tsui Hark directed THE LEGEND OF CONDOR HEROES: THE GALLENTS, wants to innovate but the result is not ideal. One of the more novel aspects of watching TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN is the action anime manga feel creation in the film, as well as the strong anime manga feel of the "Four Youths of the Walled City" and Wong Gau's costumes and action. "The anime style is exaggerated and explosive, but there is no superpower expression. For example, shortly after the opening scene Tornado obviously opens the curtain of the film's 'manga adapted' action." These innovations have undoubtedly won the film a lot of young audiences and gained new fans. Secondly it is an action system that combines classic action moves with innovative animation moves, creates classics by reviving traditional classic moves and creating classic scenes, and successfully takes the audience back to the classics of the Hong Kong action movie genre. Zhao Weifang emphasizes, "The classics themselves are good artistic charm, allowing the audience to look back at the classics themselves is also one of the great charms of the film." Take the audience to look back at the charm of classic art For example, the film's reproduction of traditional Chinese martial arts brings together middle-aged and elderly movie stars such as Sammo Hung Kam Bo, Louis Koo Tin Lok, Richie Jen (Yam Yin Chai), Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, and Kenny Wong Tak Bun, and resurrects more traditional classic moves around their fights. For example, the tiger boxing that the Wong Tak Bun played Tiger practices belongs to the traditional southern school boxing that pays attention to the lunging and clawing movements of kung fu in the hands; the Yam Yin Chai played Dik Chau practices Hung boxing, which is also a traditional southern boxing that highlights the hard core characteristics of southern boxing with stable lower stance; the Hung Kam Bo played Big Boss practices the Shaolin staff method, and the film focuses on showing the sense of power of this traditional staff method; And the Koo Tin Lok played Tornado sometimes practices the traditional northern Shaolin kicks, and sometimes it is an innovative anime manga action. Another innovation is the creation of new spaces. Zhao Weifang said that in the cramped environment of the Kowloon Walled City, every hand-to-hand combat and tossing and turning made the audience nervous and thrilling; unlike in the open plane, in a small space it is invisibly more tense. On the whole, the film pays great attention to the new creation of the action environment, and then actualizes the innovation of action scenes. Nostalgia supports the long-term development of Hong Kong films Why does Hong Kong have feelings? Zhao Weifang also has his own observations. The particularity of Hong Kong's feelings lies in the fact that the cultural preservation and sentiment building of "our city" have become more and more intense in recent years. For many Hong Kong people, the Kowloon Walled City on the screen is like a nostalgic song, causing infinite nostalgia. Those values and emotions that have survived the baptism of time, but still remain in the hearts of Hong Kong people, will be remembered forever and form a collective memory. The fact that nostalgia can have a long-term market and can be widely accepted shows that it is a powerful productivity in itself. Zhao Weifang points out, "In the past two years, Hong Kong films such as A GUILTY CONSCIENCE (DUK SIT DAI JONG) and THE LAST DANCE (POR. DEI YUK) have expressed a strong atmosphere of Hong Kong characteristics and cultural nostalgia that were felt in Hong Kong films. It is safe to say that the development of Hong Kong films in the future will also be inseparable from the empowerment of feelings. There are a large number of films in Hong Kong that pay more and more attention to the present, conveying the survival and emotional state of ordinary people in Hong Kong; this is the foundation and support of film creation. Judging from the box office, the films that perform well in Hong Kong movies are still action, comedy, and gangster films. Feelings and genre are still the trump cards for the long-term development of Hong Kong films and the continuous upward trend." "Of course, whether it is TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN or the creation of current Chinese-language films, there are still shortcomings in the narrative issue; but the good news is that everyone has put in the effort at the narrative level." Zhao Weifang expects that under the new round of already classic action genre films like TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN, more action genre films can rejuvenate the vitality of Hong Kong film and television with the joint efforts of action innovation and narrative innovation. https://www.wenweipo.com/a/202502/09/AP67a7b9d8e4b062193f607d42.html THE CREATOR OF TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN BELIEVES THE MOVIE ATTRACTS JAPANESE AUDIENCE WITH A MANGA FLAVOR News 2025-02-09 04:08:20 News Hong Kong Wen Wei Po (Reporter Azu) TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN (GAU LUNG SING JAI JI WAI SING) is a huge hit in Japan. Director Soi Cheang Pou Soi says gleefully, "Of course my feelings are happy, of course I am happy that my film is popular outside! Because the movie comes from comics, I shot it with a little manga flavor. For Japanese audiences, the enthusiasm and friendship feel familiar to them; maybe that's why they like it. As for the Kowloon Walled City, Japan has a lot of love for it. There have been video games and Walled City indoor theme parks before." As for whether he would like this Hong Kong film boom to continue in Japan, Cheang Pou Soi bluntly said that of course he wants this trend to continue, but he thinks that it will also depend on whether future movies have the same luck and opportunity to be loved by Japanese audiences. Playing one of the "Four Sons of the Walled City" in the film, Terrance Lau Chun Him feels that TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN itself is already a highly watchable movie, with many fight scenes, many scenes representing Hong Kong, and even the relationship between the characters. It tells the story of how two generations protect their homes. All the elements are so cosmopolitan, so he hopes that this work will not just stay in one place. He says, "There are many pictures and documents of the Kowloon Walled City, which have been preserved by many Japanese people; so the Kowloon Walled City is a place with a deep affection for them. At the same time the Kowloon Walled City represents a place in a certain era in Hong Kong, which in many ways reflects the situation of Hong Kong itself. I would like to thank the Japanese audience for loving this story, and I hope that in the future, whether it is the continuation of DRAGON THRONE (LUNG TAU) or THE FINAL CHAPTER (JUNG CHEUNG), we can bring you a more exciting, more profound, more moving, and more exciting story to the audience!" Kenny Wong Tak Bun as one of the gang leaders in the film, Tiger, is one of the closest to the archetypal characters in Japan's secondary manga. Wong Tak Bun says that being popular with the Japanese viewers has of course made him very happy. He believes that the reason for the popularity is the rich story background and characters, smooth rhythm of the movie, considerable action and manga feel in the Kowloon Walled City. He says, "So I would like to thank the costume designer Yu Ka On for making every character in TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS very prominent." https://www.wenweipo.com/a/202502/09/AP67a7b9c4e4b062193f607d3f.html [EXPERT OPINION ] USE INTERNATIONAL NARRATIVE TECHNIQUES TO TELL THE STORY OF LOCAL CULTURE News 2025-02-09 04:08:12 News The Hong Kong film market has experienced ups and downs in the past few decades, but the revival of Hong Kong films has not been a smooth road from slogans to substantive progress. Recently, the popular screening of TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN (GAU LUNG SING JAI JI WAI SING) in Japan not only made Japanese audiences re-understand the charm of Hong Kong films, but also brought new inspiration to Hong Kong filmmakers. The success of this film proves that Hong Kong films still have strong vitality and international influence. The film combines a variety of elements to create an intense and heartwarming viewing experience. This inspires Hong Kong filmmakers to have the courage to break through, innovate and explore new ways of expression while adhering to the advantages of genre films. Set against the backdrop of the unique Kowloon Walled City, the film showcases Hong Kong's market culture and historical changes, which arouses the curiosity and resonance of Japanese audiences about Hong Kong. This shows that taking root in local culture, telling a good story with international narrative techniques, and finding their own positioning in the context of globalization is the key for Hong Kong films to go global. His services become a hit with everyone except a crotchety conservative Taoist priest, Master Man, who is unconvinced that Dominic is committed to spiritual care. Thus Dominic digs into all of the details of deathcare while discovering Man’s dedication to the dead means he disregards his nearest and dearest. Filmed in funeral homes in Hong Kong's Hung Hom district, the film has a ring of authenticity while delivering whip-smart verbal comedy via Michael HUI and Dayo WONG as a mismatched pair. From there, it opens up into a more considered look at the Taoist influence in Hong Kong’s funeral rituals and a fascinating family drama that explores how gender roles are affected by these traditions. [ HAWAII INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ] Starring current Hong Kong comedy king Dayo Wong and comedy legend Michael Hui, THE LAST DANCE is the story of a debt-ridden wedding planner who finds unexpected success as a funeral planner, but he has to win over a traditional Taoist priest to stay in the business...The pandemic has sent most industries into recession. Mired in debt, wedding planner Dominic gets a miraculous chance to turn things around when a funeral planner retires and passes the baton to him. Planning weddings and funerals are polar opposites, but Dominic puts his all into his new job, from opening graves, digging coffins, to handling the deceased. No matter how unpleasant it gets, he takes on everything with gusto. However, the biggest obstacle is getting the approval of respected Taoist priest, Master Man. In his 70s, Master Man is a traditional man who has devoted his life to his Taoist faith. He wants to pass the mantle to his son, Ben, but Ben is more devoted to his wife and kids than to Taoism. Patrick Tam, in a performance of searing intensity, breathes life into a character confronted with the ghosts of his outlaw past, and clinging to hope for rebuilding his fractured life and finding new purpose. Chan, the acclaimed writer of the "Ip Man" franchise, infuses the film with a sense of hard-bitten optimism, suggesting that even in the darkest of times, an indomitable spirit can light the path to a better tomorrow.
