MISCELLANEOUS * (2024/06/26) Philip Ng Won Lung with his performance as "Wong Gau" in TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN (GAU LUNG SING JAI) has increased his popularity, with both extremely high job and exposure rate as he has attracted nearly one million yuan in one month. He suddenly posted a photo of him lying on a hospital bed with his feet bandaged on social media platforms the night before, causing concerned about his condition. Ng Won Lung said that he would not reply to any messages for the next few days, as he would try to find time to rest. When he would be fully recovered, he would tell everyone what had happened and ask everyone not to worry. Yesterday he updated the IG story and wrote in English: "Pain is temporary, Film is forever!" It is estimated that his admission to the hospital is related to the filming of the film. When asked about his physical condition, he replied: "It's a minor problem, but please understand that it's not convenient to talk about in detail for now." * (2024/06/26) Louis Koo Tin Lok yesterday (25th) led the "Three Sons of the Walled City" Raymond Lam Fung, German Cheung Man Kit, Tony Wu Tsz Tung, and Richie Jen (Yam Yin Chai), to appear at the opening ceremony of Studio City Cinema in Macau. Tong Choi-chi, chairman of Local entertainment company Sunny Sides Up Culture Holdings Ltd. (formerly known as Sun Culture Entertainment) earlier filed a lawsuit to the High Court against Koo Tin Lok and his company Cool Label Limited, in order to recover HK$8.3 million that he lent more than 10 years ago. This was Koo Tin Lok's first public appearance since, and he said that he has been handed the matter over to a lawyer for handling. Regarding the movie TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN (GAU LUNG SING JAI JI WAI SING) taking the second place so far at the Hong Kong Chinese language film box office and winning all the word-of-mouth, Koo Tin Lok said that later they would more audience appreication shows and admitted that the film has made a small profit. With still several millions left to reach the top of the box office, the actors will also attend the "Busan Film Festival" with the director in South Korea. However Goo Jai would be unable to attend because of his new film. "Recently I have been busy a new film. I am wearing thick clothes shoot fights in the studio under the scorching weather. The filming time is very long, and I have lost more than ten pounds." Speaking of the film's DRAGON THRONE (LUNG TAU) and THE FINAL CHAPTER (JUNG JEUNG) productions, Goo Jai revealed that it would be the most ideal for both films to be shot at once. He also pointed out that many new roles would be added, that he wanted to use new actors to carry on the theme of inheritance in the film. "Because the first film has too many characters, actresses' screen time was reduced. I hope to add more female roles in the future shoots, but the script has been written first." Goo Jai knew that the audience after the pandemic has changed their movie watching habits. He hoped to make movies and attract even more viewers to return to cinemas anew. Referring to the "Four Sons of the Walled City" thinking about performing POPULAR THIS WEEK with him at the Hong Kong Coliseum, Goo Jai joked, "I would get up there and punch them one after another, don't make trouble!' Speaking of the film TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN (GAU LUNG SING JAI JI WAI SING)'s performance team recently has been busy with making real money, Yam Yin Chai joked that he hoped to replace Terrance Lau Chun Him in the "Four Sons of the Walled City" because he was busy with work. A few days ago Philip Ng Won Lun posted a photo of his bandaged legs on social networks, Raymond Lam Fung pointed out that he did not know that Ng was injured. As for whether he has already agreed to undertake the filming of DRAGON THRONE (LUNG TAU), Siu Chai said with a smile that he would be busy with the concert but instead hoped to invite the "Four Sons of the Walled City" to be his guests. Would he like to invite Goo Jai? Lam Fung and Tony Wu Tsz Tung said in unison that they also wanted to watch Koo Tin Lok perform POPULAR THIS WEEK. An enthusiastic audience earlier felt up German Cheung Man Kit's arm during an audience appreciation event for the film. He said that at the time he did not sense anyone touching him. Siu Chai joked that Cheung was used to being touched. "Even I want to touch him, proving that everyone really like the 'Four Sons of the Walled City'." Rising in popularity, Cheung Man Kit admitted that he has yet to get used to fans calling him "husband". "I am a little scared, thank you viewers for the support. When everyone is happy, I am happy." Wu Tsz Tung joked that he was very accustomed to fans calling him BB. "Fans would ask BB did you eat, I would answer I did. I am used to it." Siu Chai just spent his 58th birthday on tour in Qingdu. He joked that he was old and not used to celebrating birthday. He just wanted to spend time with his parents at home. "Originally the TWILIGHT cast wanted to take me to dinner, after the event I would have to get on a plane right away to return to Taiwan and fight for opportunities to be with my parents. Thank you everyone for the birthday cakes, I have been stuffed after eating so many cakes." As for when he would perform a concert in Hong Kong, Siu Chai said that he really missed the fans and would have to apply hard for the Hong Kong Coliseum dates. In addition, Raymond Wong Pak Ming's Cinema City in Langham Place has said that it will close and move out after the lease expires in mid-July this year. When Goo Jai was asked about any interest to open cinemas, he said, "Wow! The rent is so expensive, I haven't thought about this yet. I'd rather make a movie." As for local entertainment company Sunny Side Up Culture Holdings Ltd. (formerly known as Sun Entertainment Culture) chairman Tong Choi Chi filing a claim in the High Court against Koo Tin Lok and his company for a loan of HK$8.3 million more than 10 years ago, and requesting the court to issue an order, Goo Jai was in a hurry to enter the cinema so he lowered the microphones. Afterwards he said that he had been handed he matter over to a lawyer and had no comment. * (2024/06/26) The charity premiere of the Emperor Motion Picture CUSTOMS FRONTLINE (HOI GUAN JIN SIN) took place two nights ago. The film's actors Jacky Cheung Hok Yau, Nicholas Tse Ting Fung, Cya Liu Yase, Carlos Chan Ka Lok, Michelle Wai Sze Nga, Kenny Kwan Chi Bun, Amanda S., Shek Sau and others attended. Boss Albert Yeung Sau Sing, his wife and son Alex Yeung Ching Lung, other Emperor artists Gin Lee Hung Ngai, Irene Wan Bik Ha, Kathy Yuen (Tong Yee), Ken Hung Cheuk Lap and others also showed their support. However the biggest highlight was Ting Fung's Mommy Deborah Li (Lai Goo) bringing her beloved MIDLIFE, SING AND SHINE! 2 singers Tam Fai Chi, MicGo Ngan, Ryan Lau Wai Wong and others. The premiere attracted more than 100 onlookers, as many fans even screamed Ting Fung's name. Ting Fung joked that he would not be jealous, and praised Hok Yau for his strong learning ability and being very sharp. He was dubbed as the "copy machine" on the set. Ting Fung was also the action director the first time in CUSTOMS FRONTLINE, so naturally he gave his all in his performance. Hok Yau praised Ting Fung as a very competent choreographer. "He made me look like I can fight well. He also accommodated me so the shoot wouldn't be too hard on me." Ting Fung pointed out that he did not particularly spoil Hok Yu. "He is called 'the copy machine' on the set. He has a very high learning ability. Just by watching once he is able to meet the demand. He is very sharp!" Directing the action for the first time, Ting Fung stated that it was not difficult and in turn praised the actors for being very fit. He also got into shape early. "Everyday at work I would look at the elder, who haven't change at all over the years." Hok Yau joked, "I only have one pack (abs) and not eight, saying he learned from me is an absolute lie. I don't know how how he did it." Ting Fung who has never held back, as he performed all of his stunts in person this time. When asked with numerous action scenes in the film, did Mommy Lai Goo try to stop him? Ting Fung said, "Mommy is a little worried, but she is used to it. She knows my persistence." Speaking of Lai Goo becoming a fan of Tam Fai Chi, has Ting Fung been jealous? He smiled and said, "How could I? Mommy always mentions them and say that they sing well." Lai Goo also brought Fai Chi to the premiere. Ting Fung said that he has yet to see them, but they would definitely have a chance to meet in the future. Recently, his girlfriend Faye Wong has been said to have a "Ting Fung Feel" with what she wore. Before Ting Fung could answer, Hok Yau taunted, "You are so daring?" Ting Fung bluntly said that he has neither read the report nor pay attention to it. Ting Fung said that he did not know which of his "look" everyone was referring to. When someone said his casual look, he laughed and said, "Odd like me?" When asked if he was happy to hear that, he instead asked, "Happy just like that? Then I am happy!" Would he give any opinion on what his girlfriend wore? He said, "Are you crazy? Of course not." Hok Yau returned to film again after 8 years. He was the most unaccustomed to returning to the set; filming action scenes instead was nothing, because he used to shooting them often in the past. Infected with respiratory syncytial virus earlier, Hok Yau bluntly said that his current physical condition is "iffy": "I haven't completely recovered from the flu before, but I only finished the show in Zhengzhou on the 23rd. It was OK." July 10 will be Hok Yau's 63rd birthday. He said that he could take a week off. Will he take a vacation with his family to recharge? He joked, "If I can go then I would! (Will your daughters accompany you?) The elder girl has to work, and the younger girl just returned to Hong Kong. Let's see if they would go." Hok Yau felt that working with Ting Fung was very fun this time. Would he consider singing together? Hok Yau felt that singing would indeed be even more fun. When would Ting Fung perform a show in Hong Kong? He said that he indeed has an idea, but he could only do his best. He has also discussed whether it could be held next year, mainly to accommodate the filming schedule. He still had two film plans in hand to implement first. In this movie, Ting Fung also wrote the movie theme song FAR AWAY PLACE for Hok Yau. Hok Yau asked Ting Fung twice if he would perform it himself. However in the end it still fell into his hands. "The first time before I even hear the song, I already asked Ting Fung if he would sing it; but after listening to it I thought it was good. I really liked it, and I asked him one more time. He still said that he wouldn't sing it." Ting Fung said he had difficulty mastering the song. Lam Ka Yan in the film played a couple with Hok Yau. It was their fourth collaboration. Ka Yan said, "We have worked together from my teens, 20s, 30s to now, the more we perform the more I love him. The love isn't all tht hard either because it have been too many years, but next time can we stop the bitter romance and have a happy ending? (Wait for the next time?) Next time I might already be in my 50s, would we work together again in my 40s? Working with him is too comfortable. For actors trust is key, with trust there would be comfort." Lam Ka Yan revealed that she had two shooting scene. In order to handle the shot, she practiced firing a gun before hand and used 100 bullets. Thus the shoot was not difficult for her. However because Ting Fung asked her to jump a hurdle while firing a gun, the coordination was very hard. "The rehearsal went very smoothly, but during the shoot I got bruises all over." She did not blame Ting Fung. Instead she appreciated his persistence as he did not want to use any special effect. Cya Liu Yase revealed that she was injured while working on CUSTOMS, but has already recovered. Would working with Ting Fung require extra effort? She bluntly said that it was right to really fight during the shooting. Ting Fung taught her how to fall. Liu Yase wanted to have the opportunity to work with Ting Fung and Hok Yau one more time; because on this collaboration she did not want it to end, especially with Hok Yau who ahd very few scenes. It was very regrettable, she joked that she grew up listening to Hok Yau's songs, and she did not feel pressure to cooperate with Idol Hok Yau this time. "He is very kind, he can sing and dance on the spot, and there will be no pressure." Would you sing together? She laughed and said she did not dare to do it at the time. Wai Sze Nga said with a smile that this time she realized her dream as Ting Fung's ex-girlfriend in the film, but unfortunately she did not have any kiss scene. She hoped that she could fulfill her wish to kiss the male god next time; she said, "Aside from the relationship with Ting Fung, I also have to 'dump' him. So when I go out people might attack me." Ting Fung joked that since she boldly "dumped" him in the film, she got what she deserved. Wai Sze Nga revealed that when she worked with Cheung Hok Yau several years ago, Hok Yau mistakenly called her Shiga Lin. Luckily this time he has not repeated the mistake. Chan Ka Lok said that he was so daring that he dared to sing Hok Yau's song in front of him. He even recommended himself to be Hok Yau's concert tour guest performer. He said, "Hok Yau said, 'Since you sang like that, wait until next time!', but since he never asked me you know what's up. He knew I was beyond saving, so he gave me two tickets and told me and my wife to show our support." Ka Lok revealed that his wife has chosen a date to give birth on July 18, mainly to accommodate him to start work in Malaysia. Thus he has put in time off with the team. "I would return to Hong Kong on the 17th. I hope that the BB will be more obedient, and not rush out of the gate." However, if the baby would "arrive early", he also had a Plan B: which was to ask Wai Sze Nga to help take care of his wife and daughter before he would return to Hong Kong. Kwan Chi Bun (Kenny) went through life and death in the film, so the series of action and explosion scenes were inevitable. Kenny said, "In one scene I felt a fire ball behind me, so the look of fear was real." Would you dare to work with Ting Fung again? He said that he would look forward to it because although Ting Fung had two jobs, Ting Fung was still willing to spend half an hour teaching him how to wield a gun. Did Ting Fung think he was "bad"? He smiled and acquiesced, "Don't tell the truth." * (2024/06/24) The Radio Television Hong Kong (hereinafter referred to as "RTHK") organized "45th Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs" music festival took place at the Kowloonbay International Trade & Exhibition Center's Star Hall last night, to present the 2023 music report card and to recognize outstanding music talents in front of and behind the scenes. Singer Crystal Cheung Man Ka and her boyfriend, artist Baby Bo Pui Yue and others showed their support. As the producer Yau Hawk Sau never would have guessed that the "Trial and Error" produced new film would be like a gospel film and have positive influence on parents, teachers and society. Fellow producer Hui Yin also took part. He was an co-ed student who took the final HKCEE. He spent 4 months to study for the Chinese and economics exams. He joked, "Over a decade ago I took these two exams and failed, this time I want revenge, but the grades are long gone as I did worse than back then. Through the movie I publicized my lost and pain from when I took the tests back then. It would have been great if someone at the time would have given me some advice." So Chi Ho who did not take the test with Hui Yin revealed that his grades were not as good as Hui Yin's. In Chinese history he thought he would get an A but got an E instead. He was rather disappointed, but he has already done his best. Yau Hawk Sau also had no interest in taking the test again, joking that he did not need to torture himself again. Taking the test has been a nightmare for everyone, as he believed that even successful people would feel the same way. Speaking of the "Trial and Error" social media channel recently stopped following Ng Ka Yan (Kayan9896), were they at odds? "Trial and Error" boss Yau Hawk Sau said that his social media only followed a few people but has never followed Ng Ka Yan. Speaking of their relationship, he clarified that there was no discord. Hui Yin said, "Ng Ka Yan has her own music career she wants to develop. She has music makers who appreciate her writing songs for her, she might not work with us again. Since we have parted ways, 'Trial and Error' didn't follow her. However our relationship is OK. When we would see each other we would greet each other." Tyson Yoshi has declined to mention Ng Ka Yan. Hui Yin joked that he might have stopped following Ka Yan because they argued. "They might not be OK. Maybe they have argued a little. It's normal for the three of us (with Yau Hawk Sau and So Chi Ho) to argue, but the relationship has been repaired, built upon and repaired further. I know that they are at this stage." * (2024/06/23) Best Actor Sean Lau Ching Wan appeared at the cinema yesterday to thank the audience. When mentioning he and Francis Ng Chun Yu were trading verbal jabs in and out of the film, Ching Wan revealed that Chun Yu was not afraid that others would be better in acting but would mind that others are more handsome than him. Best Actors Sean Lau Ching Wan, Michael Chow Man Kit and Alan Yeung Wai Lun went to an audience appreciation event for their movie CRISIS NEGOTIATORS (TAM POON JUEN GA). The audience responded enthusiastically. Speaking of working with Chow Man Kit after 31 years, Ching Wan said that their collaboration was a very happy one back then. Chow Man Kit said, "We have been lost for many years, when we made THOU SHALT NOT SWEAR (CHUT YUET SUP SEI) Ching Wan was constantly laughing, saying that when he saw me trying to laugh he would laugh nonstop." Ching Wan said that although Michael was tall, he was very friendly. So he often "bullied" him. "I can't help but laugh when filming with him, very few people can cheer me up." The reporter suggested that the two could make a comedy together next time, which both approved immediately. Ching Wan admitted, "I want to make comedy too, because I have been making serious movies for a very long time; and the world seems to be getting more and more serious. (Who would you want to work with?) With this team, to make a funny version of CRISIS NEGOTIATORS." Chow Man Kit also pointed out that seeing Ching Wan and Chun Yu converse on the set was also very funny. "They are like playing ping pong, their back and forth go very fast. They both are very smart." When Ching Wan heard this, he immediately said, "If we weren't close I wouldn't take jabs at him. Chun Yu is funny, he is the funniest. When you are better at acting than him, he doesn't mind; but don't you be more handsome and Chok than him. (Aren't you afraid of Chun Yu getting mad?) He wouldn't be mad at me. Earlier when we promoted in the mainland, someone asked if we could switch roles. I directly said of course, but Chun Yu might not be able to." Speaking of the movie's box office reaching HK$ 11 million, both of them were very happy, Ching Wan said bluntly, "Actually, I don't think about how much the box office is, but many friends after watching it say it was OK. (Does your wife have any evaluation of you?) She says it's OK! (Did she praise Ng Chun Yu for performing even better?) No, but Chun Yu really has performed very well." He hoped that the film would perform even better. As for Yeung Wai Lun's appearance in the film, which is allegedly similar to Terrance Lau Chun Him's character "Shun Yat" in the movie TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN (GAU LUNG SING JAI JI WAI SING), he joked that everyone now calls him "Shun Yi": "I want to look handsome and stylish like him; I am already very pleased with just the hairstyle." He even revealed that he has always regarded Lau Ching Wan as a god. Speaking of Ching Wan wanting the original cast to make comedy, Yeung Wai Lun immediately raised his hand and agreed, "I really like to watch Ching Wan's comedy films, I have watched one of the classic movies many times." Alan said that he loved watching Ching Wan's FAT CHOI SPIRIT (LEK GOO LEK GOO SUN NIN CHOI). He even asked when would the production start and wanted to tell the director to hurry up and start. Cherry Ngan Cheuk Ling returned to Hong Kong from a mainland series production midwya. As long as her idol Ching Wan would attend audience appreciation events, she would return because each time she saw Ching Wan she would have a happy feeling. Speaking of Ching Wan suggesting for the original team to make a comedy version of CRISIS NEGOTIATORS, Ngan Cheuk Ling happily cheered and could not wait to take part. Even though she did not know how to be funny she wanted to give it a try. Her 1990's appearance in the film has been said to resemble Japanese star Noriko Sakai, she felt very honored. She said that Noriko Sakai was a classic goddess, so she was very happy to resemble a pretty girl. * (2024/06/21) The Emperor Motion Picture THE LAST DANCE (POR. DEI YUK) starred Dayo Wong Tze Wah and Michael Hui Koon Man 32 years since THE MAGIC TOUCH (SUN SUEN). The Anselm Chan Mou Yin directed and written film that also starred Michelle Wai Sze Nga, Chu Pak Hong, Catherine Chau Ka Yee, Paul Chun Pui, Elaine Jin (Kam Yin Ling), Rosa Velasco (Wai Law Sha), Rachel Leung Yung Ting, Michael Ning (Bak Ji) and Chung Suet Ying has confirmed its release on November 14th this year. Its teaser, poster and first round of stills were released yesterday. In the tease, Hui Koon Man is performing the Hell Breaking ceremony at the mourning hall while Wong Tze Wah is thinking by the offering oven as he says, "Hong Kong's funeral is an artistic and action combination , the 'arts' is the street march, and the 'action' is the chanting ......" As the camera turned, Tze Wah and Hui Koon Man sit opposite each other. Hui Koon Man says in a deep voice, "The most important thing is to be able to live with yourself and others!" In the poster, the two stand against the door in front of a mausoleum, the atmosphere is solemn and has a strong sense of story. THE LAST DANCE talks about life and death through the funeral industry. In Wong Tze Wah's eyes, Hell Breaking is a unique form of culture and performance in Hong Kong, which deserves to be appreciated and valued. He said, "In my life, I have seen Hell Breaking a few times with my own eyes; I have seen the master spitting fire and waving the sword up close, and I can't imagine seeing such a special farewell ceremony anywhere else! The film not only presents the hell-breaking ceremony, but also explores this biggest event in life through the Hong Kong funeral industry." He also said that he learned from the film, such as applying makeup for the deceased. It is not a matter of brushing a stroke or two casually, there is a lot of knowledge in it. He is very fortunate to participate in a film that has done a lot of research and is so realistic. Michael said that the part of the script that involved life and death deeply moved him. ""First of all, whether there is an afterlife is another matter; let's first say that I went to the funeral home to say goodbye to a friend. From the Taoist standpoint, he (she) left but I have to face the rest of my life. How do we deal with that? Therefore, each departure from the funeral home would bring some kind of revelation for the deceased and the living. The deceased already left the mortal world to find another life, so we should give them blessing; for the living, we should experience life anew, grasp a new direction. This way is advantageous to both the deceased and the living." Wai Sze Nga admitted that being able to work with her elders Wong Tze Wah and Hui Koon Man felt like two extremes, both joyful and painful. "Of course I am very honored to work with them. The script is also very good, and the filming is very enjoyable! However, because of the experience of the role, I had to isolate myself and concentrate on preparing for the performance. Despite great opportunities right in my face, I still couldn't always learn from my seniors. It was quite a struggle inside!" Because of this film she had new understanding of life and death and hoped that the audience would be able to relate. * (2024/06/20) Nicholas Tse Ting Fung is the leading actor and action director of the film CUSTOMS FRONTLINE (HOI GUAN JIN SIN). In July he would fly to New York to accept the award in person. Ting Fung is the leading actor and action director in the film. In order to cope with the series of difficult performances, he began to train his body a year before the start of filming to be in his best condition. Ting Fung even shot a series of fully masculine photos before the production began. After hellish training such as fitness and boxing, coupled with strict monitoring of diet, his physique has reached the peak level. His well-proportioned and strong muscles are very eye-catching, he said, "This time is indeed a movie I have relatively high physical requirements for myself. For the highest requirements for my physical condition, whether it is diet, boxing, or fitness, I am a little more rigorous!" When asked if he has any secret to the training process? Ting Fung smiled and said, "There is no secret, the most important thing is to eat light. There are a lot of action scenes in the movie, so I must have enough exercise rate. Mainly in terms of diet: we have a lot of night scenes, 3 weeks in a row, you will want to eat at night. No matter how you maintain it, it is also very difficult." * (2024/06/20) The Andy Lau Tak Wa produced, Herman Yau Lai To directed, two Best Actors Sean Lau Ching Wan and Francis Ng Chun Yu starred film CRISIS NEGOTIATOR (TAM POON JUEN GA) has performed well at the box office. After 6 days in release its Hong Kong box office has surpassed HK$ 8.5 million. Rarely attending audience appreciation events, Ching Wan would make an appearance this weekend with director Yau Lai To, the "hostage trio" of the film Michael Chow Man Kin, Alan Yeung Wai Lun and Cherry Ngan Cheuk Ling. Michael in the film played internal investigation department officer. As Ching Wan's hostage they traded barbs and left a deep impression with the audience. Michael before the production put in an effort into studying the character with Director Yau and was glad that everyone was pleased with his performance. "The most memorable line for me was screaming 'Mommy', because the audience laughed very happily!" Michael and Ching Wan set off spark in the film, actually they have known each other for years. Ching Wan earlier in an interview mentioned that he was very happy to run into Michel again this time. Michael agreed and revealed that he came up with Ching Wan's English name Sean when they worked together on a movie over thirty years ago. "31 years old we worked together on THOU SHALT NOT SWEAR (CHUT YUET SUP SEI), then we even worked on the Mr. (Kent) Cheng Juk Si produced BEGINNER'S LUCK (WON CHOI TUNG JI)! I came up with his English name t that time, Sean! So after many years it's like seeing an old friend again. Despite not working together over the years, we still have the chemistry from acting together before. It's very comfortable! The movies we worked together on before had comedy elements, so very naturally this part would more or less be there. Ching Wan once said to me, 'Michael, don't think you are funny; I only laugh because I see how you look when you are not trying to laugh!'" Keung Ho Man in the film yelled at Chun Yu and said that it was a lot of fun. "Brother Chun Yu has always been very cool; even when filming on the set he rarely chatted. However this time I can directly yell and scream at him in the film, not only did my acting bug got its fill, I also had a lot of fun." [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. WEN WEI PO, WEN WEI SPECIAL TOPIC, JUNE 23 2024, LEUNG WAI YEE, CHAN SINN GI CONTRIBUTE MONEY AND EFFORTS TO PAY TRIBUTE TO HONG KONG CINEMA When you think of Hong Kong movies, what comes to mind? Is it the New Wave masterpiece NOMAD (LIT FOR CHING CHUN), which is full of the maker's strong personal imprint and clever editing style, or DAYS OF BEING WILD (AH FEI JING JUEN), which needs to be savored for literary romance? Is it AN AUTUMN'S TALE (CHAU TIN DIK TUNG WA), which simply and warmly shows the beauty of the essence of love, or INFERNAL AFFAIRS (MO GAN DOH) , which is tense and exciting but full of philosophical colors? From the seventies and eighties of the last century to the beginning of this century, it was the golden age of Hong Kong films. Good Hong Kong films were frequently released, gnerations and generations of viewres grew up with this golden age of Hong Kong films. Yet in recent years Hong Kong films have received the cold shoulder, many people questioned whether Hong Kong film is already dead. Out of their love for Hong Kong films, Leung Wai-yee, a "movie fanatic" who is a concert and advertising producer, and Chen Sinn Gi, a planner, decided to make a documentary to pay tribute to the elders of Hong Kong films, and to pay tribute to the Hong Kong film wave and subtle film education! The screening at the "Hong Kong Nights" of the Cannes Film Festival that caused the uproar, HONG KONG CLASSICS REIMAGINED was born from this. - CHEUK LING Producer Leung Wai Yee said, "Some voices have questioned whether Hong Kong is already dead. As a person who loves Hong Kong films deeply, I would like to say that Hong Kong films should not be like this. It can be frankly said that whether it is the mainland, Taiwan, or Hong Kong's new generation of filmmakers, there is no one who has not been influenced and inspired by the good Hong Kong films of the past few decades. We don't want the glorious achievements of Hong Kong films to be forgotten, we hope to tell the younger generation through this documentary HONG KONG CLASSICS REIMAGINED that Hong Kong films are still full of possibilities and futures, hope that friends who like Hong Kong films can continue to believe in Hong Kong films, support Hong Kong films, and look forward to Hong Kong films." In an interview, Leung Wai-yee said emotionally, "Hong Kong films are very powerful, influencing the whole of Asian films, including Southeast Asian films and Korean films! As a die-hard fan of Hong Kong cinema and a documentary filmmaker, I have been thinking about whether I can make a documentary on the theme of Hong Kong cinema and pay tribute to the golden years of Hong Kong cinema. In order to better show the core of Hong Kong films, I want to narrate from the perspective of filmmakers; so I found some filmmaker friends to form this group, which began to brew in September two years ago, and could be said to start from scratch. It wasn't until March and April last year that the shooting took place. It will be broadcast on Discovery Channel on July 1st." Leung Wai Yee said, "My generation grew up watching Momoe Yamaguchi (Connie) Chan Bo Chu movies. When I was a child, I used to take bus 102 to Mei Foo to watch movies. For fifty-two weeks a year, every Sunday morning at half past ten, Mei Foo's cinema would show different films of Momoe Yamaguchi. At the time I was only thirteen or fourteen years old, I watched all of Momoe Yamaguchi's masterpieces there, and I deeply felt the hazy and romantic nature of the films. In addition, my father worked at Swire Shipping, every night on the ship Chan Bo Chu's films would be shown to the workers. Because I like movies, so I often went to watch them to complete my initial enlightenment in film." After she started working, Leung Wai Yee became a gold label producer in the industry with her excellent work ability and strong and courageous personality, planning concerts for Faye Wong, Eason Chan Yik Shun and many other superstars. However she always has the fire of love for movies buried in her heart, she feels that she should do something for Hong Kong movies. She found her friend Chan Sinn Gi, who is also a famous Hong Kong film planner, and the two hit it off. Chan Sinn Gi said, "At the beginning we wanted to find six directors, and each director would shoot a short film of one and a half to two minutes. Together we would have more than 10 minutes to broadcast on a certain platform, preferably an international platform so that more audiences could see it. Later we found the Discovery Channel, the National Geographic Channel and the People's Daily new platform for broadcast, but realized that the 12 minutes was not enough; so we planned to add the production special like selecting classic clips of this genre of movie to play, as well as interviewing the director's views and experiences on Hong Kong films. For example for the romantic movie segment, we interviewed the AN AUTUMN'S TALE director (Mabel) Cheung Yuen Ting and others., and asked them why they made romantic movies back then, what they thought of Hong Kong romantic films, what directors have influenced them on their film journey? At the same time we also interviewed the actors, including Hung Kam Bo and Mok Man Wai. Each part added up to seven or eight minutes, with the beginning and end the total length was about 50 minutes, forming a complete documentary." The documentary brings together a number of veteran and new generation filmmakers in the entertainment industry, through the review and reconstruction of classic films in the form of six short films it presents six classic genres of Hong Kong films, and completes the tribute to Hong Kong films. The six directors include Wing Shya (Ha Wing Hong), Man Lim Chung, Kenji Tanigaki, Lawrene Kan Kwan Chun, Wong Kwok Keung, Lemon Liu Yik Man; the six film genres include literary art, cops and robbers, action, comedy, kung fu, and romance; George Lam Chi Cheung, Sammo Hung Kam Bo, Sylvia Chng, Karen Mok Man Wai, Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin, Gillian Chung Yun Tung and many other well-known actors participated in the event to pay tribute to the golden age of Hong Kong films. Because they share a common dream of Hong Kong films, these directors and actors all perform for free. Since September two years ago, Leung Wai Yee and Chan Sinn Gi said that they had encountered a lot of difficulties during the preparation. They had many doors slammed in their faces, fortunately many veteran behind-the-scenes filmmakers were willing to be directors, and new director wanted to try. Finally the production began in March and April last year, and the first film shot was the romantic movie SOMEWHERE IN TIME starring Sylvia Chang (Cheung Ngai Ga) and George Lam Chi Cheung. The short film was shot on the Star Ferry, the director Man Lim Chung is a senior art director. Man Lim Chung once directed the Ann Hui On Wa's documentary KEEP ROLLING, thus the part of the film he is responsible for have excellent presentations. Although short, the chapter vividly reflects the throbbing of lovers when they are reunited, and the cooperation between the two actors is also seamless. Speaking of the choice of actors, Chan Sinn Gi said, "Directors will use their own strength to find suitable actors, and we will also help." As a well-known producer in the industry, Leung Wai Yee's personality is very resolute and her execution is very strong; she will act immediately when she thinks of something. Leung Wai Yee said, "I am a typical Hong Kong character, Hong Kong people are not afraid of difficulties and have the courage to try. Why do I always feel that Hong Kong's future is full of hope? It's because we're moving forward in our bones. As Director Hung Kam Bo said, we will never make excuses, we will always have a heart to make and achieve." What was unforgettable for Leung Wai Yee was, Hung Kam Bo during THE RAW OYSTERS production fell ill; but in the end the filming was successfully completed, which is another manifestation of the tenacious spirit of Hong Kong people. Chan Sinn Gi revealed, "At first when the film had no investment, Leung Wai Yee enthusiastically said that she would pay for it because the filming locations needed the help of the Hong Kong Tourism Board for contact. Then the HKTB found out that we not only paid tribute to cinema, but also the location found could help promote Hong Kong tourism. The HKTB thought our concept was great, and subsidized part of the funding for our project. After editing we showed the film to the staff of the HKTB. They liked it very, very much, as they got such good and cost-effective result with a little money. A month before the Cannes Film Festival, our film was scheduled to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival's 'Hong Kong Night', hoping that our entire film team would be able to go to the Cannes Film Festival to promote. Many years ago, the Cannes Film Festival had a 'Hong Kong Night', but after a long hiatus it returned this year. They all agreed that we should promote this film to the world at the 'Hong Kong Night', so that everyone can see that Hong Kong still has a group of filmmakers who love Hong Kong films so much, Hong Kong films are still full of hope, and Hong Kong films can continue to be extended and passed on." Leung Wai Yee remembers that when the general manager of the HKTB was moved to tears when watching the film, she was still thinking to herself, "Is it really that exaggerated?" However she was delighted with everyone's love for the film and said, "They want us to be at the Berlinale, but when we checked the deadline we found out that it was already passed. We regretted not being there." The documentary was broadcast on the People's Daily website. In order for more viewres to be able to enjoy HONG KONG CLASSICS REIMAGINED, the HKTB has applied for a free screening at M+ West Kowloon on June 28th.
