MISCELLANEOUS * (2024/04/10) The 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards Ceremony would take place Sunday (14th). Lee Sheung Ching would compete for Best Supporting Actor for the first time with OVER MY DEAD BODY (SEI SI SEI SI SEI SUP SEI), facing Wu Kang-Ren who won the Film Critics Society Award Best Actor and the "Online Film Critics Highlight Award" for Best Supporting Actor. As for Best New Performer nominee Hui Yuet Sheung, she too ran into a strong rival in Yoyo Tse Wing Yan. The latter has won the Golden Horse Award, the Film Directors' Guild Annual Award" and the "Online Film Critics Highlight Award" New Actor Award. Hence Lee Sheung Ching and Hui Yuet Sheung both admitted that their chances were low and would mostly be also ran. Lee Sheung Ching has been in the industry for 21 years, initially he worked as a TV station program assistant and a screenwriter for Stars Overseas Film Company until 2008, when he caught Star Overseas boss Stephen Chow Sing Chi (Sing Yeh)'s eyes. He took him from behind the scenes to in front of the cameras. Because of his outstanding performance in CJ7 (CHEUNG GONG CHUT HO), JOURNEY TO THE WEST: CONQUERING THE DEMONS (SAI YAU GONG MOR PIN) and MERMAID (MEI YUN YU), he established the image of a comedic actor. Lee Sheung Ching said, "Actually, Sing Yeh has said that my acting is crap." This year he finally was able to stand on his own, competing for the Best Supporting Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards for the first time with the role of Lee Bo On in OVER MY DEAD BODY. He would challenge the Best Actor class Gardner Tse Kwan Ho of A GUILTY CONSCIENCE (DUK SIT DAI JONG), FLY ME TO THE MOON (DAN YUEN YUN CHEUNG GAU)'s Wu Kang-Ren, IN BROAD DAYLIGHT (BAK YUT JI HA)'s John Chiang Dai Wai, and the TIME STILL TURNS THE PAGES (NIN SIU YUT GEI)'s genius child star Sean Wong Tsz Lok. Lee Sheung Ching felt that he would most likely to also ran, but also joked that he might have a chance. "I may have a chance because the judges may not choose the best actor, they may choose the most talked about, or the most handsome. When I get handsome I can be very handsome, but Wu Kang-Ren is even more handsome." What did he think he had that could know down the crowd of fierce opponents? Lee Sheung Ching said, "I would win by......nothing, I think it's more difficult for me to win. I already treat the nomination like I found treasure. (Who would you pick?) I would always pick the youngest one. I believed (Sean) Wong Tsz Lok would be very happy to win the award, and it would also reflect the value of encouragement. It would be explosive, because if either Tse Kwan Ho, Wu Kang-Ren or Chiang Dai Wai won they may only go yeah and think that it is just the icing on the cake; just like if I got the award, I still have to keep working." He pointed out that the Lee Bo On's role was not difficult to play, because his depressed and could not throw a tantrum personality was similar to his. Lee Bo On's behavior, language and actions were very reasonable, on the other hand the one straight take long dialogue was the challenge. Although he was used to being the host as many people thought that he could be very talkative, actually he only rehearsed the lines well. Lee Sheung Ching looked back on his past acting career and felt that his performance in MERMAID was decent, unfortunately he was not nominated. "The effect I wanted came out. I played a policeman, in one scene someone called the police, when I arrived I let my true feelings flow. People could not stop laughing. Whatever the script and the director required, I did it just right. However it was only an one-minute scene, it would be so hard to get nominated!" Speaking of working with Sing Yeh, he said that he has benefited a lot, "When I had a meeting with Mr. Chow (Sing Yeh), I kept writing down what he said; because I didn't pretend to write, he would ask me to talk. At the time I didn't understand what he was saying. Looking back now, I realized that it was very useful. I gained a lot from that." He revealed that he once wanted to direct a sci-fi film, "Mr. Chow asked me what kind of film I wanted to make, and rushed me to write a script quickly; but in the end I made no contribution." Lee Sheung Ching liked to work with Sing Yeh, especially when making movies; he obviously felt his passion for movies, "At the screenwriters' meeting, he will invite a few well-known screenwriters to it. Among all the people, he liked to telling stories the most. Having this attitude is equal to winning, and you are not outtalk him. As soon as he tells a story he would lose himself in it, he would talk until late at night and when he suddenly felt hungry he would break for meals. His creativity could suppress biological needs!" He pointed out that in addition to the most profound influence from Sing Yeh, Fruit Chan Gor was also quite energetic. "His kind of energy was his willingness to make sacrifices for the movie. He was so flexible, I remember when filming THE MIDNIGHT AFTER (NA YEH LING SUN, NGOR JOR SEUNG WONG GOK HOI WONG DAI BO DIK HUNG VAN), there was a group scene; in order to have a better result, he shot it in one straight take. He used almost 20 cameras to shoot at the same time, in the end he was done in two takes. He was very confident in himself and so bold, which left me in awe. I learned a lot, and I hope to have the opportunity to work with directors such as (Johnnie) To Kei Fung and Ang Lee in the future." As a pillar of HOY TV, Lee Sheung Ching also wanted to jump out of his comfort zone; but he is worried that it would be difficult to make a living after resigning. "If I am 23 years old now it's one thing, but I am 43 years old already, better the devil you know than the devil you don't. The latest update would depend on whether the company will give a raise next time." (HOY TV will start filming series, would you like to give it a try?) Even if I work on a series, my salary remains the same. It's monthly, if it is by the show then I would throw myself into it. Many pepole think that I have worked in Cable for many years I must be rich, but the truth is only because of my monthly salary do I have so many more work. If the series is well-made, I want to give it a try; but I am worried about losing my original job during the filming. I charge hundreds of thousands of dollars for some advertising endorsements. I couldn't shoot a commercial because I had to work for the company before, I still mind!" * (2024/04/10) Hui Yuet Sheung graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts last year and is a new force in the film industry. Playing the young journalist Jess in IN BROAD DAYLIGHT (BAK YUT JI HA), she has been nominated for the Hong Kong Film Awards Best New Performer. She said that she was only dedicated to playing a role well, and never thought about what she had to compete for the award with. Being nominated was already enough encouragement, "IN BROAD DAYLIGHT has a good team on and off camera. It doesn't matter if I would win or lose, because I have earned a lot of experience! I regard Tang Wei as a role model because her acting is emotionally delicate, gives people a very natural and stable impression. I hope to be able to learn her acting skills. Even for roles that would be more daring and require nudity, I am willing to give them a try as long as the plot requires it." Hui Yuet Sheung thought that she had a quiet personality, never dared to jump out of the protected box. She originally studied accounting at the university; but later she found that she was bored of facing a large pile of numbers, so she transferred to the Academy of Performing Arts. 4 years of drama courses brought her a lot of changes and broadened her horizons, but at first she did not have her family's support. "Since I was a child, my family has instilled the concept that I will study hard, be admitted to a good university, and then find an ideal job. They felt that studying accounting would be safer, as they didn't want me to waste time and take risks. However I insisted on transferring to the Academy of Performing Arts. My family eventually told me to choose the path I wanted to take, and if the development of the entertainment industry would not be ideal, I could go back to school and study accounting again." Hui Yuet Sheung has loved dancing since childhood, and excelled at dancing Western folk dance, Jazz Funk and K-pop. Once she has participated in competitions on behalf of the school to gain stage experience, but she started acting from scratch. She could only go to class while looking for opportunities to hone her acting skills. Hence she took on commercials and music video jobs one after another, before graduation she was already chosen for the ViuTV series LEFT ON READ and the movie LIFE MUST GO ON (SUM SIU SIM BEI KAU). Although her role had little screen time, she got valuable actual on the job experience. She said that when she received the IN BROAD DAYLIGHT script, she felt lucky and super happy. "Thanks to director (Lawrence) Kan Chun Kwan for arranging for me to meet with real reporters before filming started, I obtained even more information and understanding of the story background that helped me shape the character. Then I studied foreign films with similar subjects SPOTLIGHT and SILENCED." She knew that she was impatient, when delivering her dialogue she has not been not smooth and natural enough. She still had a lot of room for improvement, and she gave special thanks to her co-stars Jennifer Yu Heung Ying and Leung Chung Hang for giving her advice and bringing her into character. Hui Yuet Sheung did not feel that her exterior and look were outstanding. She would not lock in the route of a beautiful girl, instead she wanted to be an actor of substance. She refused to limit herself to playing the mild mannered, good girl, intellectual youth, panicky or tragic type roles, "Being an actor I want to make attempts in many areas. If I have to be funny, play an ugly girl, have a low IQ, and even play a physically disabled role I can, I want to play a bad guy the most, or a character with a gloomy personality and full of dark sides." * (2024/04/10) Every actress would always have a "Best Actress" dream, Michelle Wai Sze Nga was no exception. Since making her first movie this idea was already born. After 16 years of ups and downs, she could finally compete for the Best Actress at this year's Hong Kong Film Awards. She did not hide that she wanted to win the award; the reason was very simple: she was afraid of being forgotten. From when she first got into the business and made her first film HAPPILY EVER AFTER (HUNG SEUNG WOR NEI JOI YUT HEI), Michelle has already dreamed of winning Best Actress. At the time she said to herself, "It would be good if I would!" She would even keep looking forward to this day, but unfortunately she found that she had little Best Actress Awards fate, especially the "Hong Kong Film Awards". She would watch the award ceremony every year, and has been very envious of every nominated actress as people would be able to see for their efforts. Michelle has also questioned when would people be able to see her contribution and whether her efforts were worth it? In the end, she still decided to work harder on her acting. She was lucky when she first entered the industry; from the beginning she played the lead in HAPPILY EVER AFTER (HUNG SEUNG WOR NEI JOI YUT HEI) and EX (CHIN DOH). She had many opportunities at that time, but no one offered another movie role after that. She once felt lost and asked if she was not good enough. After a long time, she guest starred in a movie. She only appeared in the film for a short time, but after the movie was released people talked about the role. Even the elder Sean Lau Ching Wan said to her, "You really acted very well!" In addition, she could not think of any job she would like even more than movies, so she could only continue to work hard. What made her happiest was that people finally saw her existence in her own movie this year. Michelle feels that her film journey has not been smooth sailing but a bumpy one. However she still felt lucky, even if she would do it all over again, she would still choose the rough road she has walked in the past. Although it is hard, it was satisfying; and she was able to have even richer memories. She was very happy that she caught the last train to make movies with film in time; now looking back, she realized that it was very difficult to keep continuity back then. After one shot they had to take a photo with an instant camera, so the production assistant was very important. The actors also had to remember a lot because any margin for error in the movie was impossible . Michelle said, "I really feel very lucky to have experienced the film era." She thanked herself for being so fond of movies, and even revealed that she had felt sad because of her family's worries. Because her sister and brother were married, had children and very stable lives, her father was very worried about her life; he didn't know if acting could last long. Michelle admitted, "Hearing Papa say that really made me feel frustrated!" On the day the Hong Kong Film Awards Best Actress nominees were announced, Michelle admitted, "I really have this feeling of 'I did it!' For me it was already great, people have seen my contribution and I had a sense of existence. I don't want to be forgotten, and I'm very happy that this time the outside has seen my performance." The people she would like to thank the most were the directors she has worked with in previous films, and each directors have also helped her a lot; especially READY O/R KNOT's director Anselm Chan Mou Yin. She said, "Because he has given me a lot of opportunities and put a lot of effort into filming me; he is one of the benefactors in my life, and I am really grateful to him." For this opportunity to win the Best actress, Michelle said that it was too hard for small romantic movies to win awards. She was already very happy just to be nominated. She said, "To be able to go to this Hong Kong Film Awards part, I can already say the rest doesn't matter; no matter who would win the award, I would feel very happy because the experience of the several nominated actors are the same; everyone has the same hardship, and I am very happy to have participated and have someone remembers me. Of course, I really want to win this award; the reason is that I don't want to be forgotten, I still want to make more good films." * (2024/04/10) The 40th anniversary screening of HAPPY GHOST (HOI SUM GWAI) was held at the cinema of KITEC on two nights ago (8th), and the film's actors Loletta Lee Lai Chun, Fennie Yuen Kit Ying, Raymond Wong Pak Ming, director Clifton Ko Chi Sum, screenwriter Joe Ma Wai Ho, as well as Gigi Fu Ming Hin, Emily Kwan Bo Wai, Amy Yip Chi Me, Tony Wong Yuk Long, Mak Chau and others attended. Yuen Kit Ying was dressed casually and without makeup, and neither she nor Lee Lai Chun accepted any interview. The day before yesterday (8th) was Wong Pak Ming's birthday. His daughter arranged for the 40th anniversary HAPPY GHOST screening and invited 400 friends to watch his first lead role in a movie. He said that 40 years ago on April 8, HAPPY GHOST began production. Time has passed very quickly. This time was like a birthday event, enjoying with 400 friends his work from 40 years ago was very happy. He also pointed out that at a secondary school student drama competition, he chose Mak Chau to be the champion, used his script as the blueprint for the film and Ma Wai Ho was the screenwriter. Speaking of birthday wishes, he hoped that the company would make more good films, and the film market would probably get better. Fu Ming Hin recalled that at age 14, director Ko Chi Sum discovered her to join the industry and participate in HAPPY GHOST II (HOI SUM GWAI FONG SHUI GA)and shared the interesting story of entering the industry, "I remember that on the first day at work, my family wasn't comfortable and asked the maid to go to work with me. Also when I got into the business I used the stage name Suen Wai. 9 years later when I joined TV I used my real name. I remember that there was a game show with the ultimate question orth 1 million back then, the question asked who were the 4 members of the Happy Girl Group; but no one remembered Suen Wai and Fu Ming Hin were the same person.". She recalled that she was very happy at work back then, and she did not need acting skills to play a student and had a lot of food. It was as if she was going to play. Did she still have the acting bug? Fu Ming Hin said, "You wouldn't ask me to play a student, right? I can be a principal, but I am afraid I can't keep up with the pac;, because the current actors are so sharp, I think I wouldn't be able to catch up at all if I come back. I should just keep up with charity work." * (2024/04/10) The Emperor movie CUSTOMS FRONTLINE (HOI GUAN JIN SIN), starring Nicholas Tse Ting Fung and Jacky Cheung Hok Yau, announced yesterday that it would be released in the summer. Ting Fung as the action director as well was extra cautious. During the shoot he corrected the actors' gun holding posture in detail. The always mild mannered Song God Cheung Hok Yau was trained by Ting Fung into becoming a "fight god", as he was able to handle many extremely difficult stunts easily. Cheung Hok Yau returned as an actor again after an 8 year long absence. In the trailer, the role he played was not much but had drama at every turn. He truly was worthy of the title of "the Best Actor hindered by singing". The trailer also made people more curious about his wonderful performance in the film, as it whet the audience's appetite! After RAGING, Ting Fung spent 3 years on concocting the new film. In addition to showing his skills in front of the camera and completing many difficult action scenes such as climbing a crane with his bare hands in the air, he also took on the responsibility of action direction for the first time. He was meticulous in many details. The film would have many large-scale gunfight scenes in the film, from something as grand in scale as the design of the scene to something as detailed as the actors' gun-holding postures, he took care of them one by one. He personally explained the correct standing posture to Wai Sze Nga and Cya Liu in order to shoot the superb gunfight scenes under safe conditions! In addition Ting Fung also designed a lot of action scenes for his co-star Cheung Hok Yau, who instead of being stumped he passed all the tests. Ting Fung said, "Some actors just have the light of natural performance, and the biggest challenge this time is to design a lot of dangerous stunts for Cheung Hok Yau. I gave him a name, which is the copy machine, basically he watched it once, and by the second take he would pass. I am sure that Brother Hok Yau hasn't fought like this in previous movies." CUSTOMS released a trailer and poster yesterday, announcing that it would be released on July 5th. The film also has certain selling points, Ting Fung once declared that the film would rely on the word "real" to impress the audience. He said: "Ours are real explosions, real fight scenes, real car chases, I hope to impress everyone with sincerity." CUSTOMS FRONTLINE is Herman Yau Lai To directed. In addition to Ting Fung and Hok Yau, who have worked together again after 14 years, the superstar lineup in the film also includes Karena Lam Ka Yun, Cya Liu Yase and special performance by Francis Ng Chun Yu, as well as Kenny Kwan Chi Bun, Carlos Chan Ka Lok, Michelle Wai Sze Nga, Ben Yuen Fu Wah, Michelle Yim (Mai Suet), Shek Sau, Melvin Wong Kam Sun, Angus Yeung Tin Yue, Amanda S. and other other strong performances. * (2024/04/10) The Soi Cheang Pou Soi directed film TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN (GAU LUNG SING JAI JI WAI SING) yesterday released the "Production Special: Action Chapter" and the latest poster. In the film the actors gave their all to their performance. Sammo Hung Kam Bo and Louis Koo Tin Lok fought each other on the screen for the first time. Sammo wielded a long staff and angrily stabbed toward Goo Jai's throat. Raymond Lam Fung showed his dexterity, flying over roofs and walking on walls, jumping and sliding, and wielding double axes to even the odds; Terrance Lau Chun Him rode like the wind on the motorcycle, and Tony Wu Tsz Tung wielding a katana. Best Actor Louis Koo Tin Lok and Sammo Hung Kam Bo staged their first on-screen fight in the new film TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN (GAU LUNG SING JAI). Goo Jai said with a smile that being beaten by his elder Hung Kam Bo was one of his dreams. "It was the first time we acted together, he has been the action director for me many times. I was happy to fight him. He fought very well, the movies he made as the action director were very exciting, and the opportunity to fight him once was an unforgettable experience." The two of them each used real kung fu when they got into position. Hung Kam Bo did not hold back, but after completing the shoot, Goo Jai also quickly stepped forward to check on him. When Hung Kam Bo heard he humorously replied, "No problem, just pain!" Afterwards, he also praised Goo Jai endlessly. "I thought that he was able to fight in my movies, but actually when he made this movie he fought just as well. He did a lot of stunts very well." Philip Ng Won Lung has worked with Sammo many times, but this time he still felt the pressure from working with his elder again, "Big Brother Sammo is a great elder in the kung fu world, and one of the idols I admire. I am very respectful every time I see him." Speaking of the fight scene between them, Ng Won Lung said, "I strangle him and have to perform very viciously. Big Brother is very powerful, and he is an elder well worth respecting." * (2024/04/10) Artists Fish Liew Chi Yu and Adam Pak Tin Nam attended an event in Sheung Wan yesterday. They in A GUILTY CONSCIENCE (DUK SIT DAI JONG) played husband and wife, and the two attended the fashion show yesterday as a couple to share their experience in dressing up. Liew Chi Yu smiled and said that she was particular about her clothes, and she would choose colors that would help her luck according to the Five Elements Theory. The 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards Ceremony would take place Sunday (14th), Liew Chi Yu would competed for Best Supporting Actress. She has been choosing what to wear and working out to stay in shape, she said, "Now I have made a few selections, one of which meets my five elements conditions, I hope it would be lucky for me, but it is very heavy with a lot metal pieces, because I am very thin, I am worried that the dress will slide down when I would wear it on the red carpet. The wardrobe malfunction would become the headline, and I can't be a 'Category III female star'. It's a lot of pressure, so I still haven't chosen what to wear." Nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards this year, Fish liked to calculate the attributes of the five elements when choosing clothes. Has she studied for choosing what she would wear to the Hong Kong Film Awards? She said with a smile: "Now I have made a few selections, one of which meets my five elements conditions, I hope it would be lucky for me, but there is metal; but because it is too heavy, I have to wait until the whole thing is done and try again. Because I am very thin, I am worried that the dress will slide down when I would wear it on the red carpet. The wardrobe malfunction would become the headline, and I can't be a 'Category III female star'. It's a lot of pressure, so I still haven't chosen what to wear. (Is it very sexy?) I am so thin so I wouldn't even have much to look at it. I am selling bony!" Fish also pointed out that because the Hong Kong Film Awards is approaching, actresses in the circle have set off a "city-wide rush to grab clothes", and it is even more difficult to borrow clothes. She said, "Now everyone is looking for clothes. (Is anyone competing with you?) Anyone you can name is looking. (Is Louise Wong Dan Nei competing with you?) No, but I understand. The season is changing and we have to borrow clothes for interviews, so it's very hard to get them." Speaking of her boyfriend Lo Chun Yip (Siuyea) competing for Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards, Liew Chi Yu said that she would not need to pick out what to wear for her boyfriend, pointing out that he was grown up and matured. She would leave it to him to choose the clothes he liked. Fish said that she had no intention of walking the red carpet with him. "Many people asked me if I would walk on red carpet with him. No, we see each other all day. Instead I hope on the big day to be able to walk the red carpet with Wong Dan Nei, (Dayo) Wong Tze Wah and the team." Siuyea in the new series would have a kiss scene with music group P1X3L member Phoebus Ng Kai Yeung. Would Fish refuse to let her boyfriend kiss her after that? Pak Tin Nam immediately joked, "Ask him to clean his mouth first." Fish laughed and said, "Siuyea and I in the series have kiss scenes with Fu Meng-Po and Phoebus, yeah! We've all won!" Pak Tin Nam also said that he and Liew Chi Yu played husband and wife in the film but had no conversation at all. He hoped that there would be more exchanges next time, "Since I am standing next to her, I must say that her acting skills are superb and I support her to win the award. I don't want her to be mad at me." As for Pak Tin Nam, he earlier went to make a move in France. Did he get lucky? He laughed and pointed out that although he had opposite-sex co-stars, and he knew many people outside the film, he did not have time to get to know anyone in depth. He also pointed out that the staff knew 10 times more about French food than him. "After this trip, I really have to read more books. (You can just meet a French girl?) I don't know French, I can't communicate, and French girls are very picky. I might as well concentrate on filming." * (2024/04/08) The first movie starred MIRROR, WE 12 (12 GWAI TO) ruled over the Easter weekend. The 12 members divided up several hundred audience appreciation shows to pump up the box office. With the strong support from MIROs, many shows were sold out. Over the Easter weekend WE 12 over 4 days made HK$ 13,206,877 and crushed GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE's $ 9,818,598 and KUNG FU PANDA 4's $ 5,379,676. MIRROR earlier began their North American concert tour, WE 12 audience appreciation shows came to a temporary stop and the box office has been affected; however on the 23rd the "WE 12 GROUP SOUL MEETING" would take place. With the ticket stub they would enter a lucky drawing for a chance to win a ticket for the event. Some MIROS in order to gain greater chances to win created the WE 12 "shows for the gods" phenomenon. The WE 12 "shows for the gods" video led to hot debate online, feeling that they disrespected the film's cast and crew. Some said that anyone who liked film would have heartache. Who was at fault? The blind fans? Or the company that only cared about making money? Some commented, "Who is so gross to buy tickets for phantoms please confess", "Supporting idols have to be a physical act! I sincerely don't encourage these shows for the gods to appear in the film market". Some suggested for fans to crowd fund shows for seniors, as charity shows would be better than shows for the gods. Some Keung Candies (Keung To fans) posted that the shows for the gods were not done by them. Because on the day of the meeting the Keung To fan club would host a birthday event at Ocean Park. Everyone would have to celebrate Keung To's birthday and do charity work, so they would not fight for meeting tickets like this. However some Miro posted, "I myself have bought tickets and not go many times, I am also proud of that. This is supporting my idol, to let investors know that he has box office draw. Enough show numbers have to be maintained, otherwise the movie would be cut very quickly. I feel this movie deserves even higher box office, so I would do my best to support it." * (2024/04/08) Movie star Jackie Chan celebrated his 70th birthday. He was glad that he was still filming in the entertainment industry after 62 years, and clarified some earlier reports about his health. Yesterday was Jackie Chan's 70th birthday. He received messages from fans around the world to congratulate him. Always cherishing his fans, he shared a number of commemorative photos on his personal social media, posted a message to thank everyone for their birthday wishes, and grateful for being able to grow old. "April 7 has not yet arrived, but many friends have reminded me, 'Big Brother, it will be your 70th birthday soon!' Every time I hear this number, I am still surprised for a second; am I already seventy years old? The second thought after being surprised is what my senior brother (Sammo) Hung Kam Bo said: It is a lucky thing to be able to get old, especially for those of us who make action movies; we know how rare this luck is even more." Regarding the recent photos of him with gray hair and having to be helped across the road by someone and in order to keep everyone from worrying about his health, he also took the opportunity to clarify that it was just the style of the movie character. "Some time ago, many friends saw the photos online and were concerned about my health. Here I can tell everyone to relax, that was from the movie I am making. The role requires gray hair and beard. Over the past few years, as long as the plot requires it, whether it is a thrilling action scene or a different look, I have been willing to give it try. After 62 years in the industry, I am still making movies to this day, which is worth cherishing." Jackie Chan has made many classic movies in the film industry for more than half a century. He said, "Recently, when my colleagues were sorting out the company archives, they turned up a lot of past photos. They have mailed some to me to use on this Weibo post. I look at these photos, and I have a lot of emotions in my heart. If I want to put these feelings into words: I love movies, I love you. Thank you again for all your birthday wishes and I wish you all health and happiness!" https://www.wenweipo.com/a/202404/08/AP6612fbade4b009ba853634af.html * (2024/04/08) Fish Liew Chi Yu has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards for the second time with A GUILTY CONSCIENCE (DUK SIT DAI JONG). Was she confident about winning another award? She said that someone has asked her that the first time, at the time she said that she did not have much confidence but hoped to win the award. Now she still really wanted to winning the award for the second nomination, but she still did not have much confidence. "Because the other four opponents are all so good, it's a good honor to be nominated with them. So I would relax, dress up and beautifully and participate. No matter what the result would be, I would still feel great!" Who would she pick? She said, "Also nominated for A GUILTY CONSCIENCE, Yeung Sze Wing usually plays fragile character, but this time she plays a barrister and performs very convincingly. Selfishly I want her to win, but (Rachel) Leung Yung Ting did a very good job in IN BROAD DAYLIGHT. How can (Ealine) Jin Yanling lose with MARRIAGE O/R ROT? Everyone knows how good an actor Wai Law Sha (Rosa Velasco) is. They are all actresses I admire the most, and everyone just happen to be competing for this award. I've already played my role well, I can't control whether I win the award or not; but what I can control is that I must be very pretty at the Academy Awards." Liew Chi Yu appeared in a gender neutral look last year, this year she wanted to change to something a little more feminine. Would she be a little sexy? She laughed and said, "What can I be sexy with? At most I can show my bones!" Would she have any pressure as she has become a regular guest of the new generation at the Hong Kong Film Awards? Liew Chi Yu felt that this was a type of encouragement. "Actually the pressure has always been with me. Whether I win the award or not, I would have pressure; but it's just how I look at it. I instead focus on the meaning behind the nomination and award, which is someone appreciates the performance. If someone appreciates it, that means someone likes it. If someone likes it, then I have movies to make. Of course I hope for that, my ultimate goal is that everyone likes me, and then asks me to make movies!" Was her next goal to make her way to the Best Actress Award? She said, "The Best Actress and the Best Supporting Actress are actually the same, because they are both actors' awards. Maybe the supporting actress wouldn't have as much screen time as the lead actress, but they are all the same in my mind. Even if I would be nominated for supporting actress again next time, I would be happy. Instead I wanted to win the New Performer award the most, but I no longer have the chance!" Liew Chi Yu wanted to challenge herself in the future and try to play some rude and intimate roles. "Although I give people a very gender neutral impression, I usually speak slowly and gently. So I want to play some rude and fast-talking roles, or make action movies." * (2024/04/08) After the pandemic the market condition has remained unclear, the film industry has been worse and worse. With poor box office, investors have not dare to invest heavily. Companies have also been more cautious than the past about starting production, no longer dared to make risky investments again as they worried about losing their shirts at any minute. Hence actors' livelihoods have been affected as well. Recently working in the mainland for the long run, the Hong Kong Film Award winning director Andrew Lau wai Keung last year was about to invite Best Actor Nicholas Tse Ting Fung to form a golden team for an action film. It was expected to shoot on location in Zhongshan, Dongguan and other places. Originally the planning and the production start were already at the ready to go stage, only later some felt that even Best Actor Nick Cheung Ka Fai with William Chan Wai Ting's film BURSTING POINT (BAU LIT DIM) that was expected to make 200 million yuan RMB but in the end only made 100 million yuan. Thus he too held back. Aside from the general climate, actually the new subject Lau Wai Keung planned to shoot revolved around law enforcers and action scenes. Since it would not be a rare sight, adding top domestic actors no longer had an edge with the mainland viewers. Even Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Aaron Kwok Fu Sing's ability to carry the box office could not compare to their glory days at all. Actually Lau Wai Keung over a year ago pointed out that 20 years ago the film market was just as low. He was determined to invest several tens of millions on the film INFERNAL AFFAIRS (MO GAN DOH), but he felt that casually making movies in a poor market was just like "taking everyone down with him". This time under the goal of working with Ting Fung, he considered the various uncertain factors. Reportedly after numerous discussion with investors, he decided to postpone the new film indefinitely. Another Ting Fung film RAGING HAVOK (NO FOR MAN YIN) was originally schceduled to wrap up production before the Lunar New Year. As the production neared its end, too many units made the production go severely overbudget. In the end the film had to postpone its official productoin end until last month. Reportedly the team in order to complete the production as soon as possible, film graduates assisted at a friendly rate. Fortunately in the end the production wrapped successfully. As for the Juno Mak Chun Lung directed and written SONS OF THE NEON NIGHTS (FUNG LUM FOR SHAN), as early as 2017 HK$ 400 million was spent on the production with Louis Koo Tin Lok, Sean Lau Ching Wan, Takeshi Kaneshiro (Gum Sing Mo), Gao Yuanyuan, Tony Leung Ka Fai and others in the cast. The production took 8 months to complete, but the film has yet to finish its post production and voice work. In February this year, Mak Chun Lung was asked about the new film's progress. He said that the post production still had 20% left before completion. A mainland video platform had a trailer for the film's 2025 release. When asked to confirm, Mak Chun Lung's manager said, "We have no comment for now." * (2024/04/08) Best Actor Louis Koo Tin Lok's classic television series A STEP INTO THE PAST (CHUM CHUN GEI) would be adapted for the big screen. The production began in April 2019 after a variety of difficulties and took three months to wrap up, but while many viewers looked forward to enjoy the "finished product", the film has yet to confirm its release date. After four years, he just revealed that he planned to release the film this year over a month ago. However he stated, "The schedule would depend on the entire market, including film scheduling issues and competition. It isn't as simple as releasing at the time comes, many factors are beyond my control." * (2024/04/08) Carlos Chan Ka Lok and Mayanne Mak Mei Yan yesterday attended the Emperor Motion Picture WE ARE FAMILY (CHOOK JO GA YUN)'s audience appreciation event and were very popular. Ka Lok said that the film was more family oriented, when he went he saw the audience was still wiping away tears and he felt a little sorry. As for Mayanne this was her first audience appreciation event for her first movie. How did it feel? She said, "I am very happy to be able to instantly thank the audience, everyone is very close. The feeling is very special, very fresh." Mayanne revealed that the film earlier was screened at the Vancouver Film Festival and her father supported the show there. Ka Lok also pointed out that his parents and his wife Shiga Lin have already seen the film. Would his pregnant wife avoid watching certain genre? Ka Lok said, "No, in the afternoon she would listen to classical music, at night she would watch stimulating movies. Lately we have been binging the series THE GAME OF THRONES, and she still watched the killing scenes so the baby would be tougher, haha!" Mayanne joked that it was in utero education, "So the children now are so mature." Speaking of his wife's July due date, when would she stop working? Ka Lok said that light jobs like interviews and program shoots were fine, but he put his foot down on concert tour performance. "All the traveling isn't too great. Originally she was very happy about being Kenny (Kwan Chi Bun)'s concert guest in Beijing, but after she announced her pregnancy Kenny declined. He was afraid about her wearing heels to the stage and taking flights. He couldn't take the responsibility. I of course am happy and complimented him! (Would you take a paternity leave?) After the birth I would take a few days off, but for the prenatal confinement I couldn't take time off. I would have to work hard for milk money. (How would you divide up time to take care of the child?) It won't be a big problem. She doesn't make too many series and movies, in addition she still needs time to recover. For the first half of the year I would work hard, as I don't want it to be hard on her." In addition, guest star Karl Ting Tsz Long two days ago also appeared at an audience appreciation event and promoted hard for the film. * (2024/04/07) The Carina Lau Ka Ling host mainland variety program invited Carol Cheng Yui Ling to be the guest on the latest episode. Sister Do in 1991 with HER FATAL WAYS (BIU JEH NEI HO YEH!) defeated that the favorite that year, DAYS OF BEING WILD (AH FEI JING JUEN)'s Lau Ka Ling to win her first Hong Kong Film Awards Best Actor. On the program Ka Ling brough up the past again, admitting that she felt super lost after losing to Sister Do. Because Ka Ling was the only Best Actress nominee in attendance, her confidence increased. Sister Do explained that back then she was working and did not attend. In addition she picked Ka Ling to win. "I thought I had no hope. Since I had to work that day, I didn't go. I truly and sincerely 100% thought that it would definitely be Ka Ling." Ka Ling said that although she once felt lost, she thoroughly admitted defeat and praised how entertaining HER FATAL WAYS was. Ka Ling and Sister Do worked together on the TVB series THE FEUD OF TWO BROTHERS, at the time rumors of their dispute were rampant. Some pointed out that Ka Ling was late, which upset Sister Do who was known to be on time. Some even rumored that at the time during rehearsal, Ka Ling did not familiarize herself with the lines, Sister Do could not help but slap Ka Ling. All the rumors made the outside thought that they were at odds. Sister Do said that the rumors were very exaggerated. "Saying I was mad at you, some said I hit you. Now really thanks to you, we can clarify it a little." Sister Do told the truth. "Ka Ling and I have worked together on the television series THE FEUD OF TWO BROTHERS. One day our entire cast was there, I saw everyone was there, except Lau Ka Ling has not reported in yet. My tone was (gentle tone), 'when was your call?' Perhaps someone heard it and magnified the whole thing." * (2024/04/06) Nowadays everyone is talking about chasing dreams, running into setbacks on the journey is inevitable. The harsh reality and the underestimation of outsiders may make people stop their dream chasing pace. The new film THE LYRICIST WANNABE (TIN CHI L) was exactly a story about chasing dreams. Lead actress Chung Suet Ying wanted to become a lyricist, the people around her were just as important. In it Eric Kot Man Fai played Papa, Ernest Poon Chung Hai the older brother, Tang Lai Ying the good friend and the older brother's secret girlfriend. The film was also director Norris Wong Yi Lam's personal experience. She once said that Chung Suet Ying was her only choice, which Chung Suet Ying joked was because the director did not want to bother. "I wrote lyrics too, so I would understand the theories and experience. The director wouldn't need to explain too much to me." Kot Man Fai also praised, "During the shoot I already thought they were very convincing, even the expressions were exactly the same. They were totally in character!" Chung Suet Ying also joked that during the shoot she also deliberately impersonated the director's appearance. The film was about chasing dreams, outside the film was also a story of chasing dreams. Chung Suet Ying revealed that the production process was not easy at all. "Because the production lacked funding, the entire film shot for several months then stopped. The director took one or two projects, after receiving funding he resumed the shoot again, thus this film was completed successfully under the stop and go situation." All four were chasing their own dreams, but Kot Man Fai joked that he was "old seafood", now he would "slack off on the chase". The other three were still on the way. Kot Man Fai felt that the starting line of chasing dreams now was easier than before, but the competition has increased. Poon Chung Hau also agreed, feeling that only with competition would there be motivation to fight your way out. He also revealed that at age 15 already many people asked him to switch jobs and told him making money was the most important. "This movie gave me a lot of confidence, the process of chasing dreams would definitely run into low points but you definitely can't give up; if there are lows there must be highs." Lai Ying said that every era would have different hardship, the most important was doing what she liked to do; Chung Suet Ying admitted that previously her family and friends did not like her working in the performing arts. "During secondary school I wanted to draw comic book and animation, all the courses I chose had to do with animation and comic books; but at the university I felt my family wouldn't like that, so I chose financial news profession. After 4 years I finally asked Papa, could I draw animation and comic book? He said no problem, and even said that he did not understand why I chose finance. I finally realized that I only thought about what they wanted for me, not what I wanted; but actually I didn't need to have previous settings, perhaps everyone would be very encouraging!" * (2024/04/06) The 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards would take place on the 14th. The five Best Actress nominees, IN BROAD DAYLIGHT (BAK YUN JI HA)'s Jennifer Yu Heung Ying, READY O/R ROT (BUT YUT SING FUN 2)'s Michelle Wai Sze Nga, A GUILTY CONSCIENCE (DUK SIT DAI JONG)'s Louise Wong Dan Nei, THE LYRICIST WANNABE (TIN CHI L)'s Chung Suet Ying and BAND FOUR (4 PAK 4 GA JOOK)'s Kay Tse On Kay were either rising film stars or first time Best Actress nominees. They all would have a chance in the competition. Yu Heung Ying and Wai Sze Nga both said that in recent years Hong Kong had more different new directors making different subjects, making the film industry more diverse. Yu Heung Ying also agreed that now new generation actors had more opportunities to play the lead! Nominated for Best Actress with IN BROAD DAYLIGHT, Yu Heung Ying has already won Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Critic Society Awards and the Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild Awards to become the favorite. As for whether she was confident about keeping the win streak going, Yu Heung Ying stated that she has not thought too much about awards, but if she would of course she would be happy. She has always imagined what winning would be like. "I really want to thank my family, because at both times I have won I thanked people in the industry and people who have helped me. I wanted to thank the opportunity to thank my family, supporting me from getting married to after having children to still continuous to make movies." Yu Heung Ying just picked out what she would wear. During the fitting her 3 year old daughter was also on hand and helped her pick something that was also exactly her own choice. She also pointed out that her husband would walk the red carpet with her. The last time her husband accompanied her to attend the Tokyo International Film Festival, he already bought a new pair of shoes and said that he would use them to accompany her to the Hong Kong Film Awards. "He really nailed it, he has a lot of confidence in me but he hasn't said if I would win what reward he would give me. Actually I am fine with just having his support; like when our half a year old son wakes up at night, he would very soon have taken care of him already." Speaking of her chances of winning the Hong Kong Film Awards Best Actress were better last year, Yu Heung Ying said that she has not felt any pressure thus. Instead she was happy about being able to walk the red carpet with the film team and family. In particular she would like to take her husband, because last time at the Asian Film Awards she saw Japanese actor Shidou Nakamura with two children. The scene was very warm. As for the competition this time, Yu Heung Ying has seen all the nominated films. Among them she admired Chung Suet Ying the most. From the film TIME (SAT CHOOK GOR WONG FUN) she has already paid attention to her, knew that she was talented and knew how to write lyrics. After meeting her she thought she was very interesting and would like to work with her in the future. This year's Best Actress nominees were all new generation actresses, Yu Heung Ying felt that there have been more opportunities to play the lead because in recent years many different new directors have made different subjects. Before mostly big production films were made, so naturally they would look for big time actors in order to have box office assurance. Now with more micro productions, even more new actors would be able to take the lead. "I am very happy to have opportunities in the new era, actually not just actors, directors and behind the scenes employees also have more work opportunities. Of course they would still need timing, location and people. I have been very lucky, I have waited before but in comparison to some talented people I don't consider myself having waited too much. I would also very quickly have the next opportunity." Did the times make the Best Actress? Yu Heung Ying said, "I am very happy that after having my children I still get to act." Speaking of her children being very happy for her, she said that she has never thought this away. Only her acting attitude has changed. She used to be very anxious about gains and losses, when she act she was very tense. However since having family and children she no longer forced anything. She has also become tolerant of gains and losses and her acting has relaxed too. Many friends found that she has changed in life or in acting. Now she only felt guilty due to work sometimes she had difficulty with taking care of her family at the same time. Thus she treated her jam packed work schedule as "me time", The rest of the time would be divided between her family. Her IN BROAD DAYLIGHT performance has received good reviews, would it become the film she was the most pleased with? Yu Heung Ying felt that she still had room to improve. Instead her previous film FAR FAR AWAY (LUEN LO SHAN KA LA) was shot when she was four months pregnant. With this physical condition and she did not deliberately designed the character before hand, she only relaxed when she performed. In acting she received inspiration and her mind was opened, understanding that sometimes performance did not need too many calculations. "Once (Alan) Luk Chun Kwong has told me, before the performance I had to do my homework. However when I got to the set I had to throw it out, I shouldn't stuff my brain with a pile of homework. This is now my new acting format, it's an experiment. I don't know whether it would be successful or not, in the future if I would run into something, I might change again." * (2024/04/06) Michelle Wai Sze Nga with READY O/R ROT (BUT YUT SING FUN 2) has been nominated for Best Actress. She said that at the moment when she found out about the nomination she was very happy and very excited, but now she has already relaxed because she was just like preparing to attend a party. She seemed to lack confidence. She joked, "You are asking me about confidence? I don't have any! So I can be very relaxed. Because I have been nominated for a romantic comedy, when was the last time?" Because the genre she has been nominated with was rather hard to win an award with, Wai Sze Nga gave the edge to the other four nominees. She has seen all of their performance and thought that everyone performed very well. " Nominations are very rare for small romantic movies. I am already very happy that voters voted for me. Winning is too hard, everyone is strong. Acting is like a piece of art, each voter's appreciation angle and preference are different." The happiest was that their five nominated films all had very different subjects. She felt that Hong Kong film had a lot of diversity and could be in full bloom. She picked Chung Suet Ying to win, pointing out that her acting in THE LYRICIST WANNABE was in good grasp. Lightly playing a relatable character was not easy at all. "I have worked with Chung Suet Ying. She has a lot of potential and works very hard, has her own ideas and presence. She gives people an impression that they really want to protect her, but actually she is very strong inside. She is able to flood out a lot of energy. I really want her to win. Because I have experienced a lot already, if she would win early, her performing arts journey would be a little more comfortable." Although she silently toiled away for 16 years before receiving the Hong Kong Film Awards Best Actress nomination, the 39 year old Wai Sze Nga did not feel that it was a Spring that came late. Instead the timing was perfect, as past experiences have made her grown and learned her to cherish. "For awhile I was very lost, questioning whether I wasn't performing good enough, why I still haven't been seen. 7 years ago I thought I had a chance to be nominated for a Hong Kong Film Awards with THE SLEEP CURSE (SUT MIN) but missed out. I worried that people would gradually forget me. This time the nomination has injected me with a shot of confidence, at least everyone knows Wai Sze Nga is an actor. I hope to continue to have people approach me with roles, I really like acting too much to be able to persist until now." Wai Sze Nga did not dare to evaluate her READY O/R ROT performance herself, feeling that she still had room to improve. Some places she could perform even more delicately, like her relationship with Carlos Chan Ka Lok could go even further; but perhaps she was too familiar with him and everyone were too relaxed, they never thought about trying more different methods to perform. They were pleased as long as the director accepted the take. "The in law relationship instead has no problem, thanks to Sister (Elaine) Kam Yin Ling for helping me a lot. I pick 'mother in law' to win Best Supporting Actress with this film, her acting really is great. She was in full control. I don't dare to say I have learned from her, but I really benefit a lot." As for co-star Chan Ka Lok's lack of nomination, did she feel he was overlooked? He said, "He has a happy marriage, and would become a father soon. He is happier than being nominated! Seeing his smile I am happy for him. He works very hard, as long as he doesn't give up he definitely would have a chance to win an award." As for Best Actor, Wai Sze Nga gave the advantage to Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Dayo Wong Tze Wah. In particular she just finished working with Tze Wa, if she would be able to work with Wai Jai in the future she would be greatly pleased. "However Leung Chiu Wai is a god class and a quieter actor, I believe while working together I would be very nervous. I hope to be able to make a romance, I already have a visual, haha!" Hong Kong Film Awards guests would all dressed very elegantly. Wai Sze Nga instead would want to appear prettily with a very exaggerated look like going to a party. She joked that even if she would not win Best Actress she would be able to win Best Dressed. The Best would be winning this award with Wong Tze Wa, then while posing for photos together they could promote the new film they just worked together on, THE LAST DANCE (POR DEI YUK). Wai Sze Nga said that she would not have too much of a chance to win, so she definitely would not prepare a "cheat sheet" for her speech. "Even if I was prepared, when I would get to the stage I would be nervous and happy. I definitely wouldn't be able to say anything, but I think I have continuously prepared for a very long time in my life. I have been in the business for 16 years. I have many people I need to thank, aside from READY O/R ROT's director, I also have many benefactors, like media friends are my benefactors too. When they come to give a word of encouragement it is already great support. I have saved up a lot that I want to say over the years." How would she encourage herself? She said, "I would relax, properly enjoy each moment in the present. I am already very happy from the nomination!" * (2024/04/06) The second Hong Kong internet film critic HIGHLIGHT Awards announced its results. The film TIME STILL TURNS THE PAGE (NIN SIU YUT GEI) won 4 awards including film, director Nick Cheuk Yik Him, screenplay and new director. Tony Leung Chiu Wai with THE GOLDFINGER (GUM SAU JI) won "Most HIGHLIGHT Best Actor", while Jennifer Yu Heung Ying with IN BROAD DAYLIGHT (BAK YUT JI HA) won Best Actress. Best Supporting Actor was FLY ME TO THE MOON (DAN YUEN YUN CHEUNG GAU)'s Wu Kang-Jen and Best Supporting Actress was IN BROAD DAYLIGHT's Rachel Leung Yung Ting. The New Actor Award went to FLY ME TO THE MOON's Tse Wing Yan. Yu Heung Ying thanked the internet film critics, and said that she has visited many online film critic sites and sometimes would even comment. She said, "Everyone on the IN BROAD DAYLIGHT team have put their hearts into it because everyone knew this subject was very serious. The production atmosphere was very memorable for me." Best Supporting Actress Leung Yung Ting said, "Thank you very much to the internet film critics for liking my performance. Normally I would pay attention to comment on various channels to increase the 'knowledge base' of my performance." TIME STILL TURNS THE PAGES won 4 awards and became the big winner. Director Cheuk Yik Him said, "I am very grateful, thank you very much for being so supportive of TIME STILL TURNS THE PAGES. This is our entire team's honor!" Yu Heung Ying on the ViuTV program SAT NIGHT SHOW, which invited her and her film IN BROAD DAYLIGHT's director Lawrence Kan Kwan Chun and co-stars Bowie Lam Bo Yi, Rachel Leung Yung Ting, and Hui Yuet Seung as its guests, talked about attending last year's Hong Kong Film Awards. "Because I was pregnant at the time, I would very easily get tired and sleepy; so I prepared a lot under my seat. Each time I wasn't on camera, I would take out a carton of milk to drink because I was very hungry." As for the award, she said that she would not pay too much attention on winning and losing. The most important was to adjust her state of mind and expectation herself. Speaking of the most memorable scene, Lam Bo Yi admitted that it was hosing the elderly residents on the roof. "I cried both times I watched it, it really was a heartache. That scene's camera use, pace, etc., made viewers walk between seeing and not seeing and completely felt that mercilessness." IN BROAD DAYLIGHT received 16 Hong Kong Film Awards nominations this year. Best Actor nominee Lam Bo Yi said that many people liking this film was already a type of recognition, he would treat the award show normally. * (2024/04/06) The Mayanne Mak Mei Yan host talk show MAYANEE BLAH BLAH BLAH last night invited Nancy Sit Ka Yin, Andrew Lam Man Chung and others as guests. Sit Ka Yin shared how Stephen Chow Sing Chi discovered her comedic sense. "Actually I didn't know I had a comedic sense until Sing Yeh asked me to make GOD oF COOKERY (SIK SUN). On the day of the shoot he said, 'Sister Ka Yin, do you really like to dance?' I said yes, in the 60s and the 70s. He said, 'Hey! Show us your dancing!' So I danced a few steps. Then he asked me to wait. After the setting the cameras he said, 'OK! You dance from here to there, try to dance as much as you can.' That was hot that dance came out, I danced until I yelled cut myself." * (2024/04/05) The Soi Cheang Pou Soi directed Hong Kong novel comic book action film TWILIGHT OF THE WARRIORS: WALLED IN (GAU LUNG SING JAI JI WAI SING) has been slated for a May 1st release. The film was 126 minutes long and would fought for the full 100 minutes, as martial art action aesthetics would be displayed in front of the audience's eyes. Based on Yu Yi's original novel CITY OF DARKNESS (GAU LUNG SING CHAI), Andy Seto Kim Kiu's CITY OF DARKNESS comic book style action concepts, the film starred Louis Koo Tin Lok, Raymond Lam Fung, Sammo Hung Kam Bo, Richie Jen (Yam Yin Chai), Terrance Lau Chun Him, Philip Ng Won Lung, Tony Wu Tsz Tung, German Cheung Man Kit, Kenny Wong Tak Bun, Fish Liew Chi Yu, Chu Pak Hong and Cecilia Choi Sze Wan. Director Cheang Pou Soi pointed out that this time was an unprecedented collaboration of a balanced three sided "novel x comic book x film". The film version adapted the novel and the comic book, of course it would also had a film version's unique creative content, costumes and action. TWILIGHT had a series of intense martial art fights, one on one combat, slaughter scene, action director Kenji Tanigaki even tailored awesome action scenes for the actors. The actors also had to accept a series of action training. Cast members Sammo Hung Kam Bo and Louis Koo Tin Lok both praised all the actors fought very well, a rare sight of an action film in recent years. Hung Kam Bo said, "The action director has done very well, putting in a lot of effort." Goo Jai said, "Most actors go from not knowing how to fight to being trained to know how to fight. It is an extremely tough thing. Throughout the shoot I have seen surprises, seeing the results of everyone's hard work ending up to be a very entertaining film." They included Raymond Lam Fung, Terrance Lau Chun Him, Tony Wu Tsz Tung and German Cheung Man Kei. In the film they rose and fell together, their team up against the Philip Ng Won Lung played Wong Gau was even the major scene. This time Raymond Lam Fung shouldered the important duty and fought from the beginning to the end. He said, "Actually this time's action was completely different from the past. This time I learned anew and started from zero. I am very grateful for the martial art coordinator Kenji and his martial art team. They really are very professional and open my eyes. Before the shoot we have already begun training for a month. I have act for over 20 years. Although more or less I would have action, but this time I really come in contact with fighting one on one. Kenji's demands are very high in order to get the sense of realism. A month of training was to pick up basic boxing. I have no contact with boxing, didn't know how to throw a punch at all. My fighting before was just for show, this time I hoped for friends who knew martial arts would feel the realism as well, for the audience to see the impact. Kenji came up with many different fighting styles, methods, scenes. I fought from the beginning to the end, even the action scenes had emotions in them. The audience wouldn't purely feel it was just watching an action film. This time all the participating team members felt that they got new challenges, so the audience would feel that everyone can fight very well." He thanked action director Kenji for his guidance and high demands. Working on an action film for the first time, Terrance Lau Chun Him not only had to handle fight scenes but also learn to ride a motorcycle at the last minute. Lau Chun Him did not know how to ride to begin with, before the shoot he only had two lessons. He even had to shoot in the Walled City's narrow corridors, feeling fear was the enormous challenge. Doing his best to personally complete all of the action, Tony Wu Tsz Tung even injured his cheek during the shoot when Philip Ng Won Lung kicked him. Tsz Tung said, "Action films have certain danger, no one wants injury. He just happened to kick higher and the misfortune happened to me. Very luckily I saw that I was the only one injured, everyone had varying degrees of injuries like Lam Fung's waist and leg, Cheung Man Kit and Ah Him got hurt too. This time what happened to me was purely an accident, requiring 15 stitches. At the time we were shooting the ending scene. If I couldn't shoot it I would've kept the production team from finishing. I apologized to the director, I never thought it would be like this. After getting the stitches I immediately went back for the make up artist to get an understanding on how to handle the make up, and see if I could shoot the next day. I didn't want to particularly say I was injured." * (2024/04/05) The 12 members of MIRROR earlier completed their first England concert tour. After returning to Hong Kong they immediately attended audience appreciation events for their first group movie WE 12 (12 GWAI DOH) and went to over 100 shows. In addition, Anson Lo recently has been working on the Johnnie To Kei Fung directed film. Three nights ago he was working in Kwun Tong. Due to the rain last week, the team's production was affected. Thus this time's shoot location and scene were very similar to last week's. Around 7 PM Anson Lo appeared at the location. Playing a driver, he was driving a couple. During the trip they began making out in the backseat, while driving he witnessed what was happening in his rear view mirror and looked displeased. He then stopped the car to yell at them. Because Anson Lo has no driver's license, the car never moved from its original spot. He relied on the lighting team staff with spotlights outside the vehicle to create the moving car effect. The cinematography half lay on the blanket covered hood to shoot. The entire scene lasted around 2 minutes, but this time the same scene shot over 20 takes; from 7 PM to 11 PM the director still has not accepted one. Perhaps due to the heat at the location, when cameras stopped rolling Anson Lo often used a handheld fan to lower his own temperature. On the set he also had bread, while waiting in the vehicle he would also rest his eyes to recharge. He looked obviously tired. Around midnight the team went on a meal break, Anson Lo also returned to the break room. After resting for a hour he continued to work and shoot the same scene from numerous angles. After 2 AM the shoot finally completed. Despite his exhaustion Anson Lo still very politely said to the crew, "Thank you for your hard work, bye bye." Reporters asked Anson Lo whether he has packed for the North American tour, he smiled and said, "Not yet." In addition, around 20 "Disciples" (fans nickname) gathered across the street from the shoot. However in order to keep from disturbing the "Cult Leader's" production, they only nicely and quietly watched. * (2024/04/05) Always known as "Taiwan's cutest boyfriend", Jasper Liu most recently worked with Stephy Tan Lai Yan on the new film AS IT BURNS (BAK SAU YU FUN). Before the production began they did not know each other at all, as soon as the production began they had to perform a bitter romance between love and hate. Jasper Liu did a lot of homework, before hand got an understanding of the character's own special quality with the director. He also surveyed the character's life environment. Speaking of their first meeting, he stated that Stephy felt distant. "Because her eyes were a bit sharp, when she looked over, sometimes I would feel scared!" However after getting along, he discovered that Stephy was extreme approachable. He even said that he received "special care". "Stephy knew I didn't understand Cantonese too well, so she often played translator." He even said that he learned something rather odd in Cantonese, "Who do you think you are?" Jasper Liu said that this time he performed in a Hong Kong suspense film, next time he would like to participate in a police action film. "I can get into shape if I hve to, actually earlier I had a chance to take part in an action film. At the time in preparation of the performance I worked out like crazy everyday. I trained with (Sammo) Hung Kam Bo's son (Jimmy) Hung Tin Cheung. He got very big, unfortunately the film due to the pandemic was scrapped." * (2024/04/04) The live-action film IN BROAD DAYLIGHT (BAK YUT JI HA), which exposed the abuse of residents of disabled residential care homes, grossed more than HK$20 million at the box office. It received a total of 16 nominations at the 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards, making it the most nominated film this year. Among them, Bowie Lam Bo Yi was nominated for "Best Actor" for IN and regarded as one of the favorites; with Tony Leung (THE GOLDFINGER) and Dayo Wong Tsz Wah (A GUILTY CONSCIENCE) they would have the best chance of winning the Best Actor. When Lam Bo Yi found out that he has been nominated for Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards, he was at the market to shop for the Lunar New Year and buy grocery for dinner that night. He once joked that he had to sacrifice a chicken to thank the gods. "Of course, I didn't slaughter a chicken, seeing a chicken slaughtered I would think it was very cruel. In addition I am old, I have to adjust my diet. I eat mostly potatoes, tomatoes, and definitely fish." Bo Yi pointed out that he was excited when he suddenly received the news of the nomination for Best Actor; the excitement in his 20s, 30s and 50s would have been different. "My colleagues were anxious and asked me if I could record a short message to media friends. At the time I was grocery shopping, so I had to go to the parking lot to return to the car and record. At that time I was excited and happy, but later I still had to continue my Lunar New Year shoppng and suppress this feeling!" Bo Yi bluntly said that he never thought that IN would have such a good box office and word of mouth, after being nominated for Best Actor would he have the confidence to win the award? Bo Yi joked, "You should ask me how I would celebrate after winning the award, actually I definitely have confidence! Confidence is from everyone, colleagues in the company say that I am a big favorite, but what make a big favorite? No one has ever seen Lam Bo Yi in the look and performance in IN BROAD DAYLIGHT, but everyone is clamoring over those. 'Wow, that's great!' Maybe the audience and media friends felt this way after watching it, only then would they say that I am a big fvcorite. I am happy, happy, and I am confident!" Regarding the performances of other opponents, Bo Yi said that he had not watched DUST TO DUST and TIME STILL TURNS THE PAGES. Naturally he could not comment on all of them, but he believed that each of the nominated films were very strong films: "If my role can be talked about, I would have the confidence, but remain calm so it would not affect me." Bo Yi won the television Best Actor in 2004 with WAR AND BEAUTY. Vying for the Best Actor throne after 20 years, has he received even more affirmation of his career? He smiled and said, "From your lips to God's ears, I would host a dinner then because this would really a big, big affirmation; but in the end, I hope that more bosses would invest in this kind of non-commercial films, and I hope they would pay attention to more non-commercial movies. Last year the (Sammi) Cheng Sau Man award-winning LOST LOVE wasn't a commercial film either. I hope that more non-mainstream and different types of movies can be released for the audience to enjoy, so that Hong Kong films can also be brought to the world. Many people say that Hong Kong movies and TV series are now "not good". Actually they aren't, we still have a group of mainstays, a group of screenwriters and behind-the-scenes personnel at work; but before that, of course, we must have bosses. We won't be bad, Hong Kong also has a group of good actors." However Bo Yi admitted that sometimes some actors are used to a certain acting style, but that could be changed. "With a good role, all the actor has to do is be willing to change a little bit." The subject matter restriction was also a problem, Bo Yi pointed out that often times everyone is filming bandits, police and undercover agents; even if the acting could be very different, but it has been painted into a very big corner. How much effort and scheming did playing a director who bullied and sexually assaulted the weak dean in IN BROAD DAYLIGHT take beforehand? He said, "My scheming was set up before. Because after receiving the script when I went to costume fitting, I have already asked the owner of the film company to arrange a person with amblyopia to chat with me. I felt that it wasn't enough, so I asked him to go to lunch together. From the company to the restaurant, I began to observe his every move, I 'pocketed' a lot into my pocket along the way. I learned how he read the phone, eat noodles, and the parts I couldn't see even I looked. Before the performance I created the manner of speech, the length of the rhythm, created my own posture, body shape. I just couldn't get fat in time so I put on a fake belly to make myself look a little old. At the time I wasn't me at all, the character came from schizophrenic." Bo Yi said that the director showed him all the information of the original characters, so he added ven more creative performances and successfully attracted the audience. When IN was in a festival in Copenhagen, Bo Yi and the local audience both watched for the first time. The audience filled the cinema; not only there was standing room, many viewers even sat on the floor to watch the film. "I had a lot of fun from the screening, and I have never seen myself perform like me in a personality split." When asked which character would he want to split into again next time, He joked that he wanted to split into several more personalities, saying that he has recently watched Eddie Redmayne's THE GOOD NURSE and a real life documentary about a male nurse who injected drugs into the elderly people he was caring for to prevent them from suffering. He also wanted to challenge such a controversial role. Bo Yi admitted that she has always been strict in choosing roles from TVB to now, sometimes he felt that luck has played a big part in every role. "For example, this time Boss Koo (Louis) Koo Tin Lok gave me a pile of material, but I would choose some other ingredients to cook a good dish. We must communicate and share with each other, only that would we have even better results. If you just keep on stuffing them to me, I couldn't cook a good dish." He has never wanted to repeat the same type of role, even sequels for the better ones have been rather rare for me.. However he understood that he also had to make a living. "Sometimes it's fun to just make money, but you have to be able to answer to yourself. You want to do your best when you get a role, and you would play it hard. Although it's a piece of cake for you, the more you perform the less you would show the audience. Then the audience would also see and say, 'Wow, you are very 'Hea!' Sometimes after watching certain actors I too would say, 'Wow, you are so 'hea!'" The success of IN BROAD DAYLIGHT has also given Bo Yi more acting opportunities, and he ould still insist on choosing his roles. "I have been choosing the roles for many years, but sometimes I have to endure. I may want to 'Hea' within half a year, I would make a lot of money in advance. I don't wnt to just make money either. When I was young I have tried to take any and all roles for awhile. I would work even if it wouldn't pay uch. Although now I am not very rich, I still try to control thequality. If you tell a neighbor Lam Bo Yi has a movie out, he would say he would watch it. I have confidence, a living icon, if the audience says "it's him again" then you are done for! Ultimately I always rely on this business for a living, I have to answer to myself. So every step of life shouldn't be just casually taken. You have to be cautious, whether in acting or every other business, it is also like this. Everyone who come out after school would not 'hea' when they pick a job. If you put in an effort the boss would be able to see it. If this boss doesn't the next boss definitely would!" Now when he receives the script, Bo Yi would look at the potential of the role. He would not just play the lead, like in A GUILTY CONSCIENCE he did not have a lot of screen time but still won the "Most Charming Actor of the New Era" at the Macau Film Festival. "So the most important thing is that the role has potential. As the saying goes the nourishment is small and silent, it has to be barely visible; but after I played it, you still recognize that my performance is still pretty attractive. Then it's right. Sometimes being too exaggerated the audience would feel that you are over acting; sometimes I don't exaggerate, but the co-stars in the same scene would be so exaggerated that the visual ended up being so abrupt. However, I would exaggerate the role if it needs to be; but I usually play it in a solid and clean way so that the audience will say it's great after watching it and have room to think." Bo Yi's home director role in IN BROAD DAYLIGHT also gave the audience room to think. In the film, as the defendant he came out of the courtroom and deliberately took out a piece of paper from his pocket to read to the media. In the scene he declared tht he has done nothing wrong and wanted to countersue the government. "The original script didn't have that. I asked for it to be added, which made the audience grind their teeth even more as they watched. When the movie was released, I suggested that a director punching bag should be placed in each theater for viewers to vent their anger!" Regarding Jennifer Yu Heung Ying's nomination for Best Actress with IN, Bo Yi bluntly said that the first time he watched the film was to watch his own part; the second time he watched it, he saw that many other actors also performed very well. Yu Heung Ying's role was able to serve the purpose of connection and transition. "I don't know if she did a good job by herself, or the director led her to do a good job; but I believe there are a little of both, this continuation and transition was very well done. I predict that she should get Best Actress. I really like her odds, but not because of IN BROAD DAYLIGHT. Although she was on the set all day long she would ignore me, the opposing director." Bo Yi also praised the Best Supporting Actress nominee Rachel Leung Yung Ting for playing the mentally handicapped resident very well and without being too exaggerated. He did not expect the film to be a hit when he first took on the film with an alternative subject. The 16 nominations at the Hong Kong Film Awards have already set a record high and worth celebrating. The film would be released in the mainland on the 8th of this month, Bo Yi wants to go on the mainland audience appreciation tour. He smiled and said that the crew should let him come back a day earlier, so he would be able to attend the Hong Kong Film Awards ceremony on the 14th. He has only prepared a suit. He only hoped that the team would not wear too much makeup on the red carpet because he has never been used to makeup. * (2024/04/04) Stephy Tang Lai Yan in the new film AS IT BURNS (BAK SAU YU FUN) played two characters and began a 12 year long relationship with Jasper Liu. She said, "The character can't set aside her stubbornness; like carrying past grudges in an endless loop, she can't escape the cycle of sadness." She pointed out that sometimes when she recalled the character's sorrow she could not help but get choked up and teared up. "Making this movie has had a huge impact on me, but I happen to like to challenge this type of performance. I couldn't help but feel I am too sadomasochistic, a glutton for punishment. I don't know why I would enjoy playing a character who is drowning in sorrow; like being in love, I keep having to become the tragic character." Although the movie was made over two years ago, Stephy's emotions were still rather involved. "Earlier I once thought I left the character, I didn't expect to break down when I watched it again. The feeling was like being unable to breathe the whole time! During the promotion when I mentioned certain important scenes, the character's emotions would immediately rush up." Jasper Liu for the movie took back his warm guy image to challenge a dark and depressed character. He said that after the performance he was very down. "After completing the shoot, I have a habit of cutting my hair to properly bid the character farewell."
