MISCELLANEOUS * (2023/09/13) The Au Cheuk Man directed, Ben Yuen Fu Wa and Ng Siu Hin starred, Ng Wing Sze, Yuen Siu Fai, Chan Lai Wun and Joman Chiang starred film A STAND UP STORY (SUET SIU JI YUN) would open on Thursday. In the film the Yuen Fu Wa played Brother Wa due to an illness in childhood suffered brain damage and became lightly intellectually disabled. He lone raised his on screen son Ng Siu Hin. Although the father and son have been close, they would have times when speaking would be difficult. The film theme song IF I AM SUPERMAN was about their entangled relationship. CY Chan Chung Chak emotionally performed the song about the son's appreciation of Papa's love all along, and as the son hopes to become Superman to safeguard Papa's sincere relationship. Performing his first solo film theme song, CY was very grateful. He said, "When I was in the recording studio, many different visuals have entered into my world. This song is about in this world, nothing is more important than family. Sometimes family to some people's life might be a huge problem, because interpersonal communication might not be the best way to express themselves. This type of relationship would sometimes make people feel very helpless, really wanting to do it well but not knowing how to. This song's lyrics were able to express that helplessness, and wanting to prove themselves to other people." CY also wished A STAND UP STORY box office success in advance. * (2023/09/11) The Ben Yuen Fu Wa, Ng Siu Hin, Ng Wing Sze, Yuen Siu Fai, Joman Chiang starred film A STAND UP STORY (SUET SIU JI YUN) would open next week. The film has not been released yet it has already had responses, and brought Ben Gor and Ng Siu Hin awards. The film revolved around the lightly intellectually disabled single father who raised his son alone. The story of the caretaker and the care recipient would make people think. Playing father and son in the film, Ben Gor and Ng Siu Hin agreed, "In comparison to impersonating someone's everyday life and behavior, impersonating someone's heart is the most difficult." Speaking of the character interpretation, they said that they did a lot of research and studying for it. They pointed out that the most difficult was to imitate someone's inside. Because the key was to play the intellectually disabled father and his normal son's relationship, how the son went from completely not understanding to gradually understanding his father's behavior and thinking and displaying the father and son relationship that even the cruel reality could not drown out. Thus Ben Gor and Ng Siu Hin hoped that the audience aside from experiencing the laughter and the tears would also be able to experience the happy feeling. They did not expect that this movie would not only test their acting to grab at people's hearts but also had thrills! They revealed that in one scene that was shot at a slaughter house, due to the power overload light bulbs were burnt and almost caused a fire. At the time Ben Gor was in character and screamed, "Fire!" Everyone thought that he was still acting. Luckily the staff with their quick eyes and hands rapidly handled it. In the end it was just a scare and no one was hurt. This time they had he most scenes with each other, which also brought them even closer. Ng Siu Hin not only got handsy with his elder but also pointed out that Ben Gor was very mischievous in person. He learned a lot from this elder. Ben Gor even struck back, "I don't feel you are nice either, very mischievous inside; but I like mischievous actors because they have even more creativity and not afraid of making mistakes. Ng Siu Hin is very smart, picking up stuff very quickly." Ng Siu Hin said that he rather enjoyed Ben's film SUK SUK and joked that he hoped next time they would be able to work on the romantic film SUK JUT (UNCLE NEPHEW). Ben joked, "That is very hard to get past!" Siu Hin suggested, "Before the shoot I would be naked at your home for a week, so you would be able to accept it." * (2023/09/10) Xu Jiao and Kimbee Lau Chan Hoi Wan yesterday attended the film CJ7 (CHEUNG GONG 7 HO)'s 15th anniversary unveiling ceremony. Playing father and son with Stephen Chow Sing Chi in the film, Xu Jiao sang and draw moon cake box designs. She also received from Kimbee a hand knit 7 Jai figure. Xu Jiao's flight due to the black rain warning was delayed for over a hour. She said that she saw on the news that the Wong Tai Sin MTR station was flooded and was very worried about the safety of the people of Hong Kong. She also felt fortunate that the event successfully took place, and wished that Hong Kong after this black rain would have fair weather in the future. Coming to Hong Kong again after 8 years, she really missed the authentic snacks. Upon arriving she immediately had stir fried crab and mantis shrimps. Before the event "Papa" Sing Yeh treated her to lunch and had roast duck and soy sauce chicken. They talked about movies. She said, "Sing Yeh said that after making CJ7 he saw an UFO that was the size of a cell phone, a black glass object. I also shared with him four dimensional space and some supernatural experience." Sing Yeh is working on the SHAOLIN WOMEN'S SOCCER. Would Xu Jian take part? She said, "He told me to train harder. If he needs me I would be very honored." She revealed that Sing Yeh wanted to make a sequel to CJ7 and wanted her to play a Mama role. "If he really wants me to play Mama, it would truly be a big challenge because I have never been pregnant. I have no problem learning from him though." She said that she would like Sing Yeh to make a female version of GOD OF COOKERY the most. When she was little she wanted to be a gourmet. Starting as a child star, Xu Jiao has grown prettier. Does she have a boyfriend? She said, "I know you would ask these gossip questions. Take a guess. Actually I am 26, having relationships with people would be very normal? (Have you brought your boyfriend to see Sing Yeh?) No, Sing Yeh directly asks about marriage, but I have never thought about marriage. Now many people don't want to get married, wanting to work more while they are young." Recently she worked on a horror film in Malaysia. Earlier she worked with Andy Lau Tak Wa on the film FUTURE X-COPS (MEI LOI GAING CHAT). She praised him for being friendly and taking great care of juniors. She hoped that in the future they would work together again. Kimbee said that she invited Xu Jiao to promote in Hong Kong, the figure she presented her took only a little over a hour to knit. The bag she carried was also hand knitted. Reportedly she has been teaching her daughter knitting. She was very happy that Xu Jiao also liked to knit. Why did she not invite Sing Yeh to attend the event? She joked, "His highness is forgetful." She has been supportive of Hong Kong films. Would she work with Sing Yeh? Kimbee joked, "He is so powerful, he wouldn't need to find people to work with. (Has Sing Yeh looked for bosses to invest in his movies?) He can, let me ask him." * (2023/09/10) Cecilia Choi Sze Wan recently represented her film A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT (DUN FOR LAN SHAN) and attended the Cinefest Miskolc. First time in the Hungarian small town of Miskolc, she was excited. "During the question and answer segment everyone was very curious about what kind of place Hong Kong is. The most interesting is after the activity ended an excited film student asked me, 'What do you think is different between Hong Kong and Hungary'. During the interview many reporters have also asked me 'What kind of city is Hong Kong'. Because in the film I played Sylvia Chang's daughter and had many mother and daughter relationship scenes. they were curious about whether due to the Hong Kong space issue would family relationships be affected." She even hoped to bring Hong Kong stories to every corner of the world. * (2023/09/09) The 52 year old Constance Cheng Yim Lai has retired from film for many years. Over 3 years ago she revealed that she was anorexic as her weight once dropped to 90 some pounds. She was sent to the hospital ICU for treatment, luckily her condition was very quickly under control and she was able to return home. Two years ago in June due to stomach discomfort she was hospitalized and her weight dropped again past 100 pounds. She has constantly gone in and out of hospitals and her condition has worried many. Cheng Yim Lai posted on social media on May 27th and has not updated it for over 3 months. Two days ago she finally posted and said that over the past few months she has been unwell, very rarely went to work as she spent most of her days either at home or at the hospital. She wrote, "I really want to spend some normal days again. The past Sunday I again spent another life and death day. Mama came back from Vietnam. Starting Monday she gave a new drug that tasted just like wood, it was very hard to take. Earlier I realized bruises appeared on my leg. I hope it can really help me! Because everyday I have to spend in pain, I don't know how much longer I can last. I wish everyone good health." * (2023/09/09) Joey Yung Cho Yi and Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin two nights ago met with the Gillian Chung Yun Tung to enjoy her new film PRISON FLOWERS (NUI JI GAM YUK), but when the show ended they ran into a storm. Joey drove them home. The rain was so strong though that not only her line of vision was hindered, but also severely flooded the roads. The trio was scared out of their wits. Joey while driving nervously asked Ah Sa, "Did you take the wrong road? I am very scared, do we have any rubber raft?" Ah Sa said that the direction was correct and told her that she could continue to go forward, but kept saying, "Very terrifying!" Many "waves" obviously arose on both sides of the vehicle. Joey after getting home still posted on her social media, "I was very scared that my car would stall, everywhere has turned into river rapids, the road has different large sized garbage. I just saw a propane tank. The roads couldn't be seen clearly at all. Everyone really have to be careful going home." Ah Sa also commented, "It really is a little scary......" She also said that Joey turned driving a car into driving a boat. Luckily Joey was experienced and everyone got home safely. * (2023/09/09) Tony Leung Chiu Wai has become the first Chinese actor to receive the 80th Venice Film Festival's Lifetime Achievement Award. Yesterday under the black rain warning, Wai Jai was dressed in casual denim arrived in Hong Kong with his wife Carina Lau Ka Ling. Many members of media braved the rain and waited at the airport VIP room passage. Wai Jai was in great mood and posed for photos at the request of the media with the Golden Lion Award. During the interview, Ka Ling only stood far away and waited. Wai Jai humbly said that the honor belonged to the team, but at the moment of accepting the award he felt that he finally was able to answer to himself for 41 years of acting. Wai Jai in recent years picked up his original intention for acting again. He said that he accepted the European director's SILENT FRIEND in hopes of experience the difference. He would play a brain neuroscientist. He would spend 8 months to prepare, and have already asked several Hong Kong universities' brain neuroscientists and brain experts for help. His level of seriousness was truly admirable! Wai Jai received congratulations for the award from reporters. Was he still very excited? Wai Jai smiled and said, "It's very different from last time (the Asian Film Award Lifetime Achievement Award), because the last time was for a movie. This time's experience was for 41 years of effort. The most touching was when I got on the stage everyone gave a standing ovation, it felt like I have answered to myself. I would always feel your years of effort, you did so much, how you treat people and things, how you work isn't to answer to others but to myself. Wow, at that moment I feel these 41 years I finally have answered to myself." Why did he suddenly get sentimental and cry at the moment of accepting the award? Wai Jai said, "Because I suddenly feel this, the entire audience have stood up. When Ang Lee spoke at the beginning, talking about what I did on the set, I myself never sensed how I was. After he said it I realized that I was like this. When I heard I was already a little......in addition on the stage were all filmmakers. Aside from presenting the award to me, a former president's wife shot a documentary about the 80 anniversary of Venice this year. After me the documentary would be screened. On hand were all domestic filmmakers. They all got up and applauded for a very long time, so the experience was very different, like an answer to myself for several decades." Was receiving the Golden Lion award from Ang Lee extra sentimental? Wai Jai said no, it was a mixture of many things. When Ang Lee spoke he mentioned that his look was better than thousands of words. Wai Jai said, "I wouldn't sense how I was, it would be from what other people say. How would I know, I am only acting." Did he feel his eyes are very sharp? Wai Jai said that he would not be able to sense that, I only sense that each time he has done a lot of preparation for his roles and performance. Of course the content would be very rich, like the difference between reading one book and a hundred books. It's not just looks, but the entire people's confidence was different. Like when he made THE GRANDMASTERS, if he has not trained for years he would not have the confidence. That confidence came from the passage of time and training. Speaking of him being the first Chinese actor to win this honor and glory for Hong Kong, Wai Jai humbly said, "Actually I feel movies isn't just one person, it's team work, a group occupation. I think over so many years, from when I started on television, from giving me the opportunity to work on 430 SPACE SHUTTLE, to the chance to make POLICE CADET, actually director (Johnnie) To Kei Fung has inspired me a lot. Does the award not belong to them? In addition there were catering and costume (colleagues), so I feel everyone made me who I am today, I just got lucky to be able to walk up there and accept the award." So would he give the award to Hong Kong film? Wai Jai said, "I feel it belongs to everyone, it should be shared with everyone. Because over these few decades, from 1982 to 2023 everyone have worked together and worked hard toward a goal. When I get today everyone has a share in it." Has the Golden Lion always been a goal for him? Wai Jai answered, "Actually my relationship with the Venice Film Festival started from 1989. That year director Hou Hsiao-Hsien's CITY OF SADNESS won the Best Film Golden Lion. At the time I didn't attend. Then Tran Anh Hung's CYCLO won, the final time with LUST, CAUTION I went with Ang Lee but we were very rushed. We couldn't wait for the award ceremony as Ang Lee, Tang Wei and I flew to the Toronto Film Festival to promote. When Ang Lee heard that he won he flew back to Venice to accept the award. At the time we were at lunch, the award was on display. Then (Ang Lee) said, 'It's everyone's'. When I saw the award, wow, I was drooling. If I would have the opportunity that would be great, but this isn't something you want and it happens. It's good luck!" After the award in Venice he kept celebrating and worked. Just getting off a plane and with the time difference, Wai Jai admitted that he was rather tired. He has been working for days, has not seen Ang Lee in a very long time, and Hungarian director Enyedi Ildiko flew from Prague to discuss the film SILENT FRIEND that would shoot in Germany in March with him. He truly was very busy. Would Wai Jai's next goal be the Oscar? He said, "Now when I make movies they aren't like before. My thinking is different, like returning to the original intention when I first came to make movies. Because before I would always think how to break through and perform a little better, now I would try to enjoy the journey with a group of people together. It would be for good results and quality and wouldn't be for an award. I want everyone to have their hearts in it, then naturally everyone would perform well." Would he get a raise after the award? He said that he would hesitation when the word "salary" would appear. Reporters jokingly asked whether he would need to ask his wife the manager? Wai Jai said, "Mainly it depends on whether I like the script or not. At this stage I feel happiness is the most important. Working on a movie with a group of people happily is more important than giving me a lot of money!" Openly thanking his wife Carina Lau Ka Ling for the first time, Wai Jai admitted, "Indeed over the years she has been silently supporting and encouraging me. I seemingly have never thanked her before, so I took the opportunity of accepting this lifetime achievement awards to say it." Would his wife as his manager let go for him to do what he liked? He admitted, "Yes, because in the end I make the decision; because I am going to make the movie, not her. In the end I feel I really like it. As for why I would take an European movie, first I have made many in Asia, and I have made some in Hollywood. I haven't made one in Europe, and the director happened to have tailored the role for me. After seeing her work I feel she is a very excellent director. I had several Zoom meetings with her, and felt she is someone I can trust. She is very cultivated but humble, just like last time when I took SHANG CHI I sensed the director was very real and reliable over Zoom." When Wai Jai took the Hungarian director Enyedi Ildiko's movie SILENT FRIEND he also felt this way. "So let's try it, try something different. This time would be a little more academic. My character is brain neuroscientist. Two months ago I have already gone to Hong Kong's universities to find cranial nerve experts for research and read a pile of books. I would give lectures in Germany in the film, so I need to have basic knowledge. Because I have to give lectures, I plan to use 8 months to prepare this time. Everyday I would read for 4 to 6 hours. I am not a professional so I read very slowly. When I don't understand something I am lucky ot have several Hong Kong universities' brain neuroscientists and brain experts to support me. They often say if I don't understand anything I read they would be able to explain it to me." * (2023/09/08) The Stephen Chow Sing Chi directed and starred science fiction film CJ7 (CHEUNG GONG 7 HO) opened in 2008. Sing Yeh held a CJ7 15th anniversary exhibit that would take place from today to October 31 at a Causeway Bay shopping center. At the center of the exhibit was a model of the spaceship from the film, next to it was the classroom from the school, as well as several Sing Yeh and Xu Jiao's stills and design drafts, prop book bags, glasses, test forms, for viewers to take photos with. The location had many of the film's character 7 Jai's merchandise for sale, as well as items from others Sing Yeh films like GOD OF COOKERY (SIK SUN)'s classic super deformed dolls and exploding juice beef balls tee shirts, and the most expensive items at the venue, MERMAID's limited edition tourbillon watch for fans to chase "Sing" together. * (2023/09/08) The Carlos Chan Ka Lok, Bosco Wong Chung Chak and Louis Cheung Kai Chung starred Emperor Motion Picture THE BROTHERHOOD OF REBEL (JAT JIK 2) would open on October 5th. The film's subject would be the brotherhood of Wise Guys. Ka Lok was the only one out of the three actors who took part in the first time. He admitted that he was worried. "TRIAD was the first time I played a Wise Guy role. At the time the role didn't have a lot of screen time. This time Director Ng Ka Wai has helped me change the existing sunny and mild mannered image, to bring a flat top new look that is full of freshness." He pointed out that on the first time he already shared "for the worst" with Bosco and Ah Chung, as they rapidly built their relationships. "Our brotherhood came very fast. On the first day we had to climb the hills and go into the seas. At the time the weather was very cold but we still had to get into the water. Originally we were planning on fighting in the water, but the director kept telling us to go further and further out. Finally all the actors were fighting in the water. After experiencing 'life and death', naturally they got familiar very quickly!" * (2023/09/08) MIRROR member Anson Kong Yip Sang's first lead film role BACK HOME (CHUT YUET WUI GWAI) would open soon. Earlier he spoke about the production experience and joked that he did not have the time to be scared. "The set had many people and was very hot, I would only focus on the performance; I never had the time to be scared. However actually something strange did happen there, but they never told me as they were afraid that I would be scared. I only found out after the shoot was over." He admitted that he believed the talk of ghosts and spirits, each time before work he would present incense sticks so he would not be too worried. In order to get into his character, he overcame his fear. Whenever he shot a frightening scenes he would go into a dark room alone to cultivate his emotions. "Sometimes in order to sense the fear, I would lock myself in a dark elevator and imagine what scared me when I was little. I knew outside were plenty of people, so I was OK!" As for his first lead, he admitted that although everyone has said that it was acceptable, he still felt that he had a lot of shortcomings and would keep working hard to play every role well. "When I went to to the U.S. for the New York Asian Film Festival and watched BACK HOME, I thought my performance was iffy and had a lot of flaws. Some conditions in some spots lost continuity. Ultimately since I had less experience, I don't have enough to have a good grasp. I have talked about that with Lokman (Yeung)." The director felt that AK's performance was worth 90 points, admitting that he still had some lacking spots. They also have had discussions, like some lines could be done better. He felt that AK overall had a decent grasp on horror film's horror and atmosphere. "His character is under a lot of pressure, very intense and rough on the set." Director Nate Ki (Tse Ka Kei) revealed that from over 20 performers and amateurs around the same age, he chose MIRROR member Anson Kong for the role. He said that before hand he sent parts of the script to the participants for homework and preparation. On the day of the audition he picked a few scenes for AK to perform. They included dramatic and horror scenes. AK did all of his homework and injected a lot of things. He had quite the shade of the protagonist and met what the director had in mind. In conversations the director also felt that he was very happy and interesting, with many aspects that have yet to be chiseled out. Tse Ka Kei remembered that on the day of the audition AK appeared without make up and with acne, which surprised him. AK said, "The company told me, the film company wants me without heavy make up. If that's the case, then I might as well go without any. Before the audition two pimples popped up, which I thought were no problem." AK felt that the most difficult was the lack of air conditioning on the set, which was both hot and stuffy like a sauna. "The more I worked the thinner I got, which was very suitable for the role. I would find joy for myself from within, give myself a little treat and recharge. I couldn't be in an unhappy and suppressed state for a long time." He said that while training in Korea, after finishing his training and as he prepared to return to Hong Kong, one night something happened. "I shared a room with a trainee from China and one from Taiwan. One night as I slept, I felt someone sitting at the foot of my bed. I saw the Chinese roommate, who had a tattoo on his neck. However when I asked him, he denied it." Tse Ka Kei said that once while watching the playback someone tapped him on the shoulder. When he turned around, everyone were sitting faraway. He joked, "Maybe someone just passed by and watched the film production." * (2023/09/07) Chrissie Chau Sau Na in the film PRISON FLOWERS (NUI JI GAM YUK) played a woman who has been sentenced to prison for business fraud. Chrissie admitted that the role had certain difficulties, the challenge of which was turning from the businesswoman to a prisoner. "Prison is a drastically different environment and needs to use different ways to adjust. One of my character's goal is to survive, to reach a place in prison, which is the interesting part about this character." Chrissie Chau in order to play the role well dropped her pretty girl baggage, constantly having to show vicious looks and mean expressions. She also said that the character was very arrogant, so she constantly got beaten up. "This movie really has many fight scenes, but mainly I get beaten up." However, Chrissie also had her moment to strike back. In one scene she fought with prison big sister Rain Li Choi Wa. Chrissie turned into an action actress as she strongly choked Li Choi Wa in a rather ferocious manner! Another lead in the film Jeannie Chan Ying played a rebellious daughter with a variety of misunderstanding with mother Carrie Ng Ka Lai. The mother and daughter ran into each other in prison but might as well be strangers. In one scene Chan Ying crossed the wrong people in prison, Ng Ka Lai was dragged in and tortured, as a bound and gagged Chan Ying madly cried. Chan Ying had nothing but praise for Ng Ka Lai, calling her nice and professional. "Sister Ka Lai completely understands how to perform, very able to bring the drama out . In addition this time is an all women team, the group of girls made the movie more fun." [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : But Si Nei But Oi Nei d. Sarah has come to Japan seeking to buy an investment property and to have a brief and restful holiday after a bad break-up with her boyfriend. Everything has been precisely arranged in advance; from the schedule, to the hotel, to the real estate broker and the site visits. Immediately after her arrival things start to go terribly wrong. It turns out that the real estate agent who picks her up at the airport unexpectedly and uncomfortably is someone she knows from her past. Then she is informed that due to a reservation error her hotel booking has been cancelled and because the US President is visiting Tokyo, all the other hotels are full. With Sarah unable to get a new reservation and after turning down the chance to stay in a love hotel, the real estate company places her in a minipaku, a private residence rented out to short term guests. However, this minpaku is seemingly abandoned and looks very dilapidated, menacing and creepy. When Sarah checks in, she finds that it's run by an elderly woman who bizarrely seems to recognize her and in fact seems to have been expecting her. So do some of the other guests. Her first night there is disturbing and frightful, the stuff nightmares are made of. Despite her protests and insistence when she tries to leave in the morning, she learns that she will need to stay there for at least a few days until a more suitable hotel is available. What Sarah doesn't know is that this is a house with a very mysterious, violent and unclear history that is somehow connected to her. Unbeknownst to Sarah, this minpaku is under active investigation by the police owing to the recent disappearance of a journalist who was investigating the house because of some strange incidents. In particular a full skeleton had been found under the floorboards- and more strangely it was infested with a particularly virulent parasite that had consumed it from the inside out. Lead detective who has been dealing with personal issues that have virtually destroyed his career, believes there is more to this place than meets the eye. If he can break this case he might be able to resurrect his career. The detective's sister, a forensic scientist also working for the police department at first doubts his interest in the matter but then gets drawn into the case-only to end up dead. Sarah's trip is proving to be anything but restful and relaxing. When the lights go out at the minpaku, grisly and disturbing visions beset her. They become more and more real --including some that involve her late mother who also had lived in Japan for a period of time. With things beginning to go way off plan, her visit to Japan is turning into a horrific and bizarre nightmare. When the innkeeper suggests that Sarah might be pregnant and that she has come back "home" to give birth we are left to wonder if this is the beginning or the end-- of a hell that will consume her. Unfortunately, he is unable to recall the location of his lunch date with his high school classmates, and it is too late to return home to retrieve it. Feeling lost and defeated, he must find a way to contact his classmates in order to obtain the address of the restaurant. Story 2: Female executive Ana gets a WhatsApp message from a scam artist; she was originally hostile, but their conversation turns out to be surprisingly simpatico. Through this conversation, she even finds out information about her husband’s infidelities and criminal activities. Story 3: Raymond, a real estate agent, has his phone hacked, and worries that sensitive information about his business affairs might be leaked, and plans to escape the authorities. At the same time, his daughter tries to scam and 'catfish' a computer nerd. [ UDINE FAR EAST FILM FESTIVAL 2023 ] Amos Why's singular approach to recording contemporary Hong Kong continues in Everyphone Everywhere, a lightly comic drama capturing scenes of pandemic-era life, exploring the cityscape and covering our tight links to mobile phones. Everyphone Everywhere's cross-cutting narrative brings together a large set of players within the mobile-communications theme. First there's designer Chung Chit (Endy Chow), who rushes to catch a ferry and leaves his phone at home. There's no time to retrieve the device, so he tries to soldier on without it – and the results are eye-opening. Eventually, he'll need to call his wife Ivy (Cecilia Choi) to awkwardly help him out. Meanwhile, soon-to-emigrate middle manager Raymond Ho (Peter Chan) starts his day with his WhatsApp account hacked and frozen. Broken contacts aside, his big fear is exposure of shady workplace practices and possible blackmail or arrest. Then there's Ana (Rosa Maria Velasco), an old classmate of theirs who's waiting in a private kitchen and getting odd messages. And all the time a young lady, Yanki (Amy Tang), and a nerdy computer wiz (Henick Chou) are busy using messaging apps for sleazy purposes. Pulling together the various plot strands, Amos Why's fourth feature spins into complex and curious entertainment. The director once again draws on rising talent, here headed by Endy Chow in a relaxed and personable role and with the others drawn from cinema, TV and popular YouTube channels. Viewers are kept on their toes as numerous characters pass by, with some appearing in dual roles and others briefly turning up to give sometimes imaginative faces to those on the other end of messaging exchanges. Why's past plots have been engineered to send cast and crew to as many corners of Hong Kong as possible, but this time things are more focused. Everyphone Everywhere starts on the island of Cheung Chau and trots around the city before settling in the Kwun Tong industrial area, building a sense of place as Chit gets lost trying to find Ana's meeting place within a massive industrial complex. The kindness (or not) of strangers and other little snippets of community life come in too, and Why doesn’t shy away from accurately showing Hong Kong’s outdoor mask-wearing requirement, which ended this March after 945 days: Everyphone Everywhere has its cast join the rest of the public in keeping their masks on. A fun bit of Covid-times weirdness is also thrown in when a scene recreates how a government alert caused phones across the city to blast sirens. Meanwhile, government banners are seen promoting last year's 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China, with the tagline heralding "A New Era." The anniversary angle brings up thought-provoking contrasts when Chit, Raymond and Ana finally meet and look back on the hopes and feelings they'd written down 25 years ago. Social shifts are also reflected when a man seems worried about others bringing up his past actions, as well as when the subject of emigration comes up. There's a lot to process in Why's unique brand of cinema, and his first two films showed it wasn’t easy to balance clear plotting with all the recording of local places and society. His third film Far Far Away saw him smoothing out the form into a highly watchable package, and that effort continues here with an easily relatable phone topic sitting beside the extensive local coverage. Viewers looking back on the Hong Kong of 2022 should be able to find Why's film an easy-going document of the city and its people in unusual times. [ SCREEN DAILY FILMART 2023 ] Following last year's hit romantic comedy Far Far Away, director Why returns with this drama about three friends who reunite after 25 years. Once together, they experience an unusual day on account of their mobile phones and find new meanings in life. ANPANMAN: ROBOLY AND THE WARMING PRESENT d.
