MISCELLANEOUS * (2023/05/17) Wong Yau Nam in the new film TALES OF THE OCCULT: BODY AND SOUL (SUT HUNG HUN GAN ji JUI YU SAT)'s segment RAPUNZEL (TAU FAT) played a hair salon boss. Before the shoot he went to learn from a star class hairstylist and said that he absolutely could not have any mishap with how he held the pair of scissors. In the film he showed no mercy, after drugging Kiki Cheung Hoi Kei he dragged her across the floor and almost pulled out her hair. * (2023/05/16) Director Soi Cheang Pou Soi directed the film MAD FATE (MING ONG), which revolved around fate and metaphysics. He claimed that the spirit of Ah Q, when life and career fell into a period of loss he relied completed on the idea of "state of mind decides fate" to get over the hard times. Speaking of working with screenwriter Yau Nai Hoi, who he has known for years, for the first time, Cheang Pou Soi revealed that the process ran into enormous hardship; but he discovered that as long as he adjusted his state of mind, willing to toss away ideas that he has stubbornly held on to, he was able to find a new way out and resolved the fear that troubled him for 19 years. He said, "I used to feel that for me to make a comedy, it would be more horrifying than watching a horror film." Cheang Pou Soi in 2004 directed HIDDEN HEROES (JUI GIK 8 Yuet 15), which made HK$ 9.74 million at the box office. Despite the decent performance he has rarely made a comedy since then, as he strongly attacked his expertise of action, horror and suspense subjects. After 19 years, he in MAD FATE worked with screenwriter Yau Nai Hoi and changed his filmmaking direction. "The Nai Hoi I know isn't a screenwriter who messes around and slacks off. When I read the script, I already sensed the humor. I didn't deliberately made MAD FATE into a comedy. I made it seriously like a drama and hoped that everything flowed out naturally." Cheng Pou Soi remembered when he went to the cinema for MAD FATE audience appreciation events. "When I heard the audience's laughter, I felt a strong sense of satisfaction. Because the movies I made have more intense atmosphere, usually the viewers would not make any noise. However this movie inspired me, and increased my confidence. I no longer resist making comedy, from now on I would dare to try." Changing the script while making a movie was something that used to happen constantly with Cheang Pou Soi, but this time he and Yau Nai Hoi mutually respected each other. He let Yau's script drive, while Yau Nai Hoi also would not have extra opinions on his production method. The collaboration was very pleasant. "When I made movies before, I would add my own ideas into the script. When the screenwriter wrote three things, I would skip making two of them. However this time I know the script is much more complicated, all the destined, coincidence, fate are connected. If I move one thing it would cause a domino effect and everything goes wrong. I have to be very careful in the handling, I can't just ignore the script to please myself." Was this the most well behaved time for him as a director? Cheang Pou Soi laughed, "Yes, you can say that." Would they make a comedy next time? Cheang Pou Soi said that he did not know yet, he and Yau Nai Hoi had an understanding that they would want to work together again. They had a very initial concept, ultimately Yau Nai Hoi needed time for his ideas to brew. MAD FATE examined fate with the general public, whether in the mortal world "man would conquer fate" or "destiny is hard to go against". Cheang Pou Soi felt that the idea of man conquering fate was very hard to realize, instead he tended to believe in state of mind would change fate. Speaking of his daughter's tumor being caught when she was little, he and his wife cried but still held out hope. After his daughter's operation the tumor was confirmed to be benign. Her health has been great as this year she would turn 14. "I don't know whether the strength in facing the matter was able to change the result, or was the result already predetermined? At least the attitude of holding onto hope wouldn't be wrong, in life people have to have the motivation to face problems." Cheang Pou Soi loved to use strange ways to explore the filmmaking feeling. He revealed that in order to explain the important role "Heaven" played, he thought about using birds, crows, hawks or children to symbolize it. After quite awhile, in the end he felt that none of them was suitable. He instead used astronomical phenomenon. "For this movie I shot the sky for half a year at home, from morning to night. My wife couldn't bother with me. I wanted everyone to feel the sky but didn't want to be too supernatural. However I was also afraid that the audience would not understand, thus I used effects like colorful clouds, birds taking off to the sky in the rain, and lightning. Luckily the audience said that they sensed man was struggling again heaven." Speaking of the hardest scene to shoot, Cheang Pou Soi brought up the cafe scene. It involved too many people and was an important turning point of the film. He said that during the shoot he could not sense the tense atmosphere, maybe because the schedule was rushed and the location was small. He could only use multiple angles and coordinated with editing to bring out the tension; the rooftop ending also had 3 versions before he was able to decide which way to go. * (2023/05/16) The 48 year old businessman Stephen Shiu Jr. chaired China Creative Digital Entertainment (formerly HMV Digital China Group Limited) earlier filed for liquidation; the Superior Court yesterday heard the case. The plaintiff Wan Tai Investments Limited pointed out in court that the defendant company now owes HK$ 1 billion, 42% was owed to the plaintiff company. Any restructuring plan the defendant company has mentioned did not receive support from the plaintiff and would not be successful. Thus the plaintiff requested a court order for liquidation, the other debt holders supported the request. China Creative Digital requested a postponement for a restructuring plan. Only after the judge's considered the requested was denied and the liquidation order was issued. China Creative Digital Entertainment started to invest in film production in 2011. Their films included Dayo Wong Tze Wa's AGENT MR. CHAN (DONG DUK DUT GUNG), Julian Cheung Chi Lam's RETURN OF THE CUCKOO (SUP YUET CHOR NG DIK YUET GUONG), Joyce Cheng Yun Yi and Chrissie Chau Sau Na starred 29+1, Wong Cho Lam and Michael Hui Koon Man's DELETE MY LOVE (DELETE OI YUN), THE MENU (DOH FOR SUN MUN SIN) and category III films 3D SEX AND ZEN (3D YUK PO TUEN ji GIK LOK BO GAM) and THE DUE WEST OUR SEX JOURNEY (YUT LO HEUNG SAI). AGENT MR. CHAN and 3D SEX AND ZEN brought HK$ 44 million and HK$ 40 million to the box office; 29+1 made over HK$ 15 million and won many film awards. The later productions of THE LEAKERS (SIT MUK JEH MOON), DECEPTION OF THE NOVELIST (JOK GA DIK FONG YIN: BUK JUNG YAU JUI), DYNASTY WARRIORS (JUN SAM GOK MO SEUNG), and PART-TIME GIRLFRIEND (#PTGF CHOOK JO NUI YAU) and others have not performed well at the box office. The film version of RETURN OF THE CUCKOO (SUP YUT CHOR NG DIK YUET GUONG) with TVB owed lead actress Charmaine Sheh Sze Man over HK$ 930,000 in overtime pay. Ah Sheh's manager filed suit. TVB banned the artists until Stephen Shiu Jr.'s management company. At the time Louise Cheung Kai Chung could not promote his TVB series MY AGES APART (KWA SAI DOI). Aside from film productions, Stephen Shiu Jr. in 2015 purchased half the shares of GME China and Starz Entertainment Limited. At the time artists under Starz included Pakho Chau, Shiga Lin and Stephanie Cheng Yung; later it also purchased the international large chain of video and audio retailer HMV, paid HK$ 46.5 million to purchase Hong Kong's over the top film and television on demand platform Anyplex and renamed it HMVOD. * (2023/05/16) The Irene Wan Bik Ha produced film LONELY EIGHTEEN will open in June. The film theme song JOURNEY OF LIGHT AND SHADOW would not only be performed by her but its music video would also be directed by her in an all new attempt. When Irene heard the song's demo she already really liked the song's melody. She invited music make Tsui Ho to write the lyrics and the visuals from the film then appeared in the song. As a first time music video director, Irene invited the film THE FALLEN (DOR LOK FA)'s cinematographer to assist with the production. The music video featured "black and white" concepts. Irene explained, "I want to coordinate with the film' story of a young girl growing up. I want to have a type of nostalgia of remembering the past in the diary. The cinematographer even used a hand held cameras throughout to make the sense of motion and art stand out." Irene had her fill of directing fun from her first time at the helm of a music video. Would her goal be directing a film? Irene said, "I want to, but I am afraid I wouldn't be able to handle it. The sense of satisfaction is still a little greater from being a producer. From casting to controlling the entire production, the creative space is also greater. Although directing would have a greater sense of accomplishment, I still want to mainly act. Being a film producer I would learn more stuff!" Irene has a film office, and has produced her films LOVE IN LATE AUTUMN (OI JOI SUM CHAU) and THE FALLEN. This time her third film as a producer LONELY EIGHTEEN (NGOR MOON DIK SUP BAK SHUI) would be released at the end of June. The film would be based on her real life experience, document the journey from her rebellion in her adolescence, to the obstacles she ran into in entertainment and transformation. For perfection, Irene pointed out that the film took 5 years to make. Just the script alone took almost 3 years to write. "From the experience of producing two past movies, I want to take my time. In addition I participated in the script and the production, and I am very pleased with the result. It feels like my baby being born. I also look forward to everyone seeing my effort." Because LONELY was about the experience of her growing up, Irene had many memories and sentiments brought back during the shoot. "In one scene the child who played me at age 5 was getting hit by Papa. I was behind the mon(itor) and recalled when I was little how strict Papa disciplined me, but Papa was much older than I was. We had a big gap between us and thus never communicated. I was very rebellious, in the end I left home." Irene knew that her parents loved her, but they did not truly understood what she liked. In addition, the living condition in Tiu Keng Leng was very poor. Rain often leak into the home. When she was little she only had soy sauce with rice. These experience would make her learn to cherish everything she had. "Because of these childhood experience, I wanted to make a world for myself so my family would be able to live even better." Recently Hong Kong film box office repeatedly set records. Irene said that she also had certain confidence in the film. In particular her new film would be about the story of growing up and childhood memories that everyone must have experienced, she believed that it would also triggered a lot of sentiments in the audience and viewers would be able to relate to it. * (2023/05/15) Director Ho Cheuk Tin last year made his directing debut THE SPARRING PARTNER (JING YI WUI LONG), which immediately became the top grossing category III film in Hong Kong film history. Then he directed OVER MY DEAD BOY (SEI SI SEI SI SEI SUP SEI), the box office of which was headed toward HK$ 30 million. Earlier when he won the Hong Kong Film Awards Best New Director, he received that he spent the HK$ 100,000 cash prize on rent. Earlier he appeared on a radio interview and revealed that he has thrown himself into OVER MY DEAD BODY audience appreciation events, but even with the higher box office the director would not get any extra bonus. He said that OVER MY DEAD BODY cost much more than THE SPARRING PARTNER. Even if the box office would exceed HK$ 30 million, it still would not have broken even. Ho Cheuk Tin explained, "THE SPARRING PARTNER cost HK$ 9 million, the box office would have to triple that to turn a profit because shares had to given to cinema circuits, distributors and marketing. THE SPARRING PARTNER made over H$K 40 million, which seemed to be a lot. In the end several investors might make 1 to 2 million each, which they deserved. As the director I only get the director's pay. However to be able to have the chance to make the first movie, I am happy about fulfilling a dream." * (2023/05/15) Tony Leung Ka Fai has given his all to his twin daughters. The highest record was making 13 movies nonstop in a year. With over 140 films he has been dubbed the thousand faced Best Actor, and he would never retire. The Frederick Ma Si-Hang host talk show WE LOVE THIS PLACE's subject for the fourth episode was "Film", and he invited his idol Leung Ka Fai to be his guest. Actually Ka Fai was not only top notch in acting but also had a rather high ability to "tell stories". Standing tall in the film industry for 40 years, Ka Fai has made over 140 films. Back then the craziest was three units in one day, and 13 movies in a year. Ka Fai said, "Back then I wanted to try everything, which enabled me to keep making movies without stop in three years. One year I made 13, basically I never slept. Because everyday I had to go between 3 units, each unit for 8 hours. As unit followed unit, mainly I rested while traveling between units; but Hong Kong was a small place, at most it only had a half hour ride to go to the next unit." Ka Fai continued that he worked so hard back then, partially for his family. "Because back then the two girls were born, for a working class the expenses were enormous. So I had to keep taking movies to maintain the family back then." Speaking of the movie that needed the most time to shoot, Ka Fai said it was ASHES OF TIME (DONG CHE SAI DUK) and personally explained the entangled connections between the film and the comedy film EAGLE SHOOTING HEROES (DONG SING SAI JAU). "ASHES originally was in two parts; but because after three years in production the film still couldn't make the deadline, EAGLE SHOOTING HEROES was born. At the time all Southeast Asian cinemas have bought the film for the Lunar New Year, so we were forced to make EAGLE for them. At the time all the Chinese film fans were very curious, why would Hong Kong use some many big stars to make such an absurd and odd movie to replace ASHES? Maybe we were squeezed in a desolate place where we had no idea what to do for three years, so we dug in and dug deep to show the craziest side to the audience and became the classic later. I thought these two movies were very hard to come by in my film career." Ka Fai pointed out that what film production had over him was the ability to experience a variety of lives through characters. He stated that he would "never say quit". In Ka Fai's over 140 lives, three of his personal representative works had to mentioned. They were REIGN BEHIND A CURTAIN (SHUI LIM TING JING) that won him he Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor at age 26, the youngest Best Actor in the Hong Kong Film Awards history; PRISON ON FIRE (GAM YUK FUNG WON) and THE LOVER; speaking of winning Best Actor, Ka Fai humbly said that all the credit should go to director Lee Han-Hsiang. He also said that back then he just got into the business and completely act according to directions. "Back then sound was not recorded live, as soon as action was yelled I would walk while the director would say, 'lower your head, turn around, look at me, lower your head again'. We really made a movie like this." Ka Fai also pointed out that back then because of his super rotten Putonghua, the then already national first class actress Liu Xiaoqing was 'upset'. They due to "language" problems had numerous bad takes. In the end they had to rely on the director's use of "intricate 1234567" to overcome the problem. As for why he was able to defeat all the strong opponents around he world for the lead actor spot in THE LOVER, Ka Fai cracked up and revealed that it was completely because he was weak enough. That was truly surprising. Ka Fai said, "THE LOVER's director is French. At the time he went all over the world in search of THE LOVER's Chinese Vietnamese character. No matter where he looked, he could not find anyone overseas. When he came to Hong Kong, the first thing he said to me when we met was, 'Oh! You can be my boy.' I asked why, he said, 'You are as weak as I wish!' Also because my back was sleek and shiny, without much hair and very smooth. At the time in France the film was promoted as 'smooth and flawless curves of beauty." In the classic film PRISON ON FIRE the most memorable as all the extras have been to prison before. "So on the set I learned a lot. They would each you the prison rules, how people got along, what was different between prison and the outside world." * (2023/05/14) Jeana Ho Pui Yu in the horror film SOCIAL DISTANCING (DIN JI LING) played a ghost again. In the film her character's sexually assault was recorded and posted online, after which she kept suffering from cyberbullying. At her lowest she chose to stream her suicide and ended up becoming a ghost; Jeana said that she was optimistic, in real life online comments would not bother her. Speaking of the ghost look, she said that every time before work she had to spend 4 hours to put on the make up. "In order to create the rough skin effect, pieces of tissue had to be glued to the face. For several days in a row the look had to be maintained for over ten hours, and the glue could only be removed with make up removal liquid that contained alcohol. Taking off the make up took 1 hour, so it was very damaging to the skin. However I felt that it was worth the effort, because the result was realistic and beautiful, the most important is it is terrifying enough! After make up even I wouldn't dare to look at the mirror. When I went to the bathroom I would avoid the mirror." * (2023/05/13) Amy Tang (Lai Ying) and Henick Chou Hon Ning starred in the film EVERYPHONE EVERYWHERE (CHUEN GOR SAI GI DOH YAU DIN WA), which told a story triggered by a smart phone. The film earlier released the Chou Hon Ning and Lai Ying sang NET FRAUD music video. Chou Hon Ning in the film developed an online relationship with Lai Ying. He was very grateful to the director for creating this duet. "This time is also my first duet, to be able to sing with Lai Ying achieves the unlocking feeling." According Lai Ying, she and Chou Hon Ning in the film had a "spiritual exchange" relationship. This song's lyrics completely nailed the mixed flavored emotions on an online romance. Because she has worked with Chou Hon Ning earlier, the recording process has been very relaxed and smooth. Next time they would perform the song live at the test screening and concert. * (2023/05/13) The theme of the Frederick Ma Si-hang host program WE LOVE THIS PLACE's latest episode is "film". He invited his idol Tony Leung Ka Fai to be his guest and talked about his deep destiny with film and shared past film tidbits. Outstanding actor Leung Ka Fai actually had a rather high ability of telling stories too. He revealed how he won the Hong Kong Film Awards Best Actor at age 26 and even shared his experience of working with China's master class actor Liu Xiaoqing, why he was chosen to make THE LOVER and make the jump to the international film scene, the reason for PRISON ON FIRE's success, and the entangled relationship between ASHES OF TIME (DONG CHE SAI DUK) and EAGLE SHOOTING HEROES (DONG SING SAI JAU). As nothing was off limits, Leung Ka Fai said that he grew up at the now already closed Roxy Theatre. He said, "My Mama was the phone operator at the Roxy Theatre. I think after I was a month old I grew up there, at age 8 he was still inside the cinema. I completely familiarized myself with the entire cinema." Ka Fai joked that he spent the most time at the ladies' room at the cinema. He explained, "I was constantly placed in the ladies' room because only the ladies' room had an auntie (attendant) and a small table. People put me in a basket." Ka Fai said that her aunt back then sold popcorn at the same cinema, so he grew up on popcorn. "In the past the profit from selling popcorn had to be shared with the cinema. The cinema provided the paper bags, however many bags were sold would be shared with the cinema. I didn't get to eat fresh popcorn, but only the ones that fell out. I just ate like that until I was 8." Speaking of Hong Kong film history, Ka Fai revealed that the once popular late show actually was a way to test the water back then. Filmmakers would gauge the number of sugarcane waste on the late show floor and the number of damaged chairs to predict whether a movie would be popular or not. * (2023/05/12) MIRROR captain Lokman Yeung and Ng Wing Sze starred in the film MAD FATE (MING ONG) as a deranged serial killer and a prostitute. Lokman admitted that the pressure was too much, Wing Sze even pointed out that in the first scene with Lokman she already had to seduce him. Lokman left awkward and scared by it. Lokman Yeung in the film MAD FATE played a cafe owner's psychopath son who ran into the Gordon Lam Ka Tung played a fortune teller. Lam predicted that the young man would be in prison for murder. The young man asked the master for help to change his fate. Lokman pointed out that the character was full of desire to kill, which for him was a huge challenge. "I don't have much acting experience, the character is very distant from my personality so it is very difficult. With Ka Tung, Director Soi (Cheang Pou Soi), screenwriter Yau Nai Hoi, those several points have already been too much pressure for me. Everyone tried various ways to get me relief, so I would be able to play this role in a very comfortable mood and environment." Lokman said that during the shoot he slowly explored the character, at first he did not know how he performed. The director would watch the scenes that he played correctly with him. He felt that this experience was instant feeling. "I used to do a lot of homework and designs for the character, but this time the director asked him not to do any homework. I would do whatever I would feel on the set, as he wanted that type of directness." Being on the brink of a breakdown during the shoot, Lokman fortunately was able to leave the character outside the film. He said, "During the shoot even resting on the set would be very depressing. I would settle down and concentrate on thinking. When I got home I didn't want to think too much. I was able to sleep and didn't have any nightmare, only occasionally while out at meals I would daydream and think, After the shoot I was able to leave the character." Lokman benefit a lot from working with Best Actor Ka Tung. "From Ka Tung I learned to persevere, pay attention to details, skills that a good actor would have, how he treated people and things......I learned a lot." Wing Sze in the film played a young prostitute and needed to be sexier in what she wore. "The character has been quite a challenge. Because I have no knowledge of this profession, I did research online before hand and actually observed in the field." Wing Sze revealed that in the first scene she already had to seduce Lokman, frightening him with close distance contact. Lokman said, "I never thought that it would be so close, it was a little awkward but not for her. So my first impression was that she is very daring." The film's theme was fate. Lokman said that he believed in destiny, feeling that life had many things that were destined and shaped the you today. When facing adversity, he said that he would accept and adapt. "Maybe this time the mood would be heavy, I wouldn't make myself have to be happy or defeat the negative energy. My state of mind would be 'Let's go!' and see how I would react, try to save what was happening." Wing Sze looked at fate lighter, would accept adversity normally and go with the flow. * (2023/05/12) Cecilia Choi Sze Wan, Tony Wu Tsz Tung, ANSONBEAN (Chan Ngai Sun) and Kevin Chu Kam Yin worked together on CHESIRE CAT, one of the segments in the film TALES OF THE OCCULTS: BODY AND SOUL (SUT HUNG HUNG GAN ji JUI YU SAT). Working on her first horror film, Choi Sze Wan constantly ran around in ruins and was almost out of oxygen from the shoot. Chu Kam Yin in the film had a crush on Choi Sze Wan, with both relationship and brotherhood scenes that did not lack violent scenes. Due to various elements in one, he praised the film as a lot of fun. TALES was ANSONBEAN's film debut. He was happy that he was able to try action scenes. Wu Tsz Tung lamented that this time they did not have any scene together. He hoped that next time they could play a couple. ANSONBEN even wanted to invite Chu Kam Yin to join them, as three would be more cheerful than two! Choi Sze Wan pointed out that in the film she had many action scenes, which for her was rather exhausted. A cat slave in real life, she played a cat volunteer and thus her impression of the story that involved cat abuse was especially memorable. Her rage helped her get into the character. She said that she considered loaning her cat for the shoot, but Wu Tsz Tung immediately stopped her as he was worried that her heart would break from watching. The scene of Ken Tong and Pat Ha making love on the tram arises controversy when it is showed. In contrast, the love between Leslie Cheung and Cecilia Yip is a kind of tender and pure. Cecilia falls in love with Leslie in the first sight, they sympathy each other and then sleep in a reasonable way. This kind of love is more graceful and sweet. Besides sexuality and sex, this film also talks about the infiltration of Japanese culture into Hong Kong. Leslie is westernized but old fashion inside, Cecilia is influenced by Japanese culture and ambitious. This shows the characteristics of Hong Kong's unique culture. This film reflects the youngsters' attitude towards love and sex, which is a breakthrough as it should be a taboo in Hong Kong society at its time. The relationships among the boys and girls are also profoundly described and make it as the most realistic romance movie. YOKAIPEDIA d. Gordon Lam and Lokman Yeung are extraordinary as two men standing at the edge of sanity, as they fight an invisible enemy. Berlinale Special. [ BERLIN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ] The sky above Hong Kong is not just heavy with clouds and rain, it also contains astral signs and dark omens in this esoteric neo-noir. In a radical and counter-intuitive move, rather than having the characters' trajectories converge towards the end, the plot instead knits their fates together from the start. Crossing paths at the scene of a heinous crime in a brothel are the serial killer perpetrator and the upstanding detective chasing him, but also a delivery boy obsessed with blood and knives and an occultist feng shui master who had predicted the victim's gory fate without being able to prevent it. The last two quickly form an unlikely pair, and this transforms the film into a surreal, hyperkinetic, expressionist buddy thriller. The horoscopes confirm that the boy will soon succumb to his bloodthirsty temptations, but to redeem past failures and save him from his fate, the fortune teller is willing to do anything. As the investigations gather pace, the pair sinks into delirium in a whirlwind of superstitions, rituals and distortions, against a backdrop of an alchemical metropolis. Story 3: Raymond, a real estate agent, has his phone hacked, and worries that sensitive information about his business affairs might be leaked, and plans to escape the authorities. At the same time, his daughter tries to scam and 'catfish' a computer nerd. [ UDINE FAR EAST FILM FESTIVAL 2023 ] Amos Why’s singular approach to recording contemporary Hong Kong continues in Everyphone Everywhere, a lightly comic drama capturing scenes of pandemic-era life, exploring the cityscape and covering our tight links to mobile phones. Everyphone Everywhere's cross-cutting narrative brings together a large set of players within the mobile-communications theme. First there's designer Chung Chit (Endy Chow), who rushes to catch a ferry and leaves his phone at home. There's no time to retrieve the device, so he tries to soldier on without it – and the results are eye-opening. Eventually, he'll need to call his wife Ivy (Cecilia Choi) to awkwardly help him out. Meanwhile, soon-to-emigrate middle manager Raymond Ho (Peter Chan) starts his day with his WhatsApp account hacked and frozen. Broken contacts aside, his big fear is exposure of shady workplace practices and possible blackmail or arrest. Then there's Ana (Rosa Maria Velasco), an old classmate of theirs who's waiting in a private kitchen and getting odd messages. And all the time a young lady, Yanki (Amy Tang), and a nerdy computer wiz (Henick Chou) are busy using messaging apps for sleazy purposes. Pulling together the various plot strands, Amos Why's fourth feature spins into complex and curious entertainment. The director once again draws on rising talent, here headed by Endy Chow in a relaxed and personable role and with the others drawn from cinema, TV and popular YouTube channels. Viewers are kept on their toes as numerous characters pass by, with some appearing in dual roles and others briefly turning up to give sometimes imaginative faces to those on the other end of messaging exchanges. Why's past plots have been engineered to send cast and crew to as many corners of Hong Kong as possible, but this time things are more focused. Everyphone Everywhere starts on the island of Cheung Chau and trots around the city before settling in the Kwun Tong industrial area, building a sense of place as Chit gets lost trying to find Ana's meeting place within a massive industrial complex. The kindness (or not) of strangers and other little snippets of community life come in too, and Why doesn’t shy away from accurately showing Hong Kong’s outdoor mask-wearing requirement, which ended this March after 945 days: Everyphone Everywhere has its cast join the rest of the public in keeping their masks on. A fun bit of Covid-times weirdness is also thrown in when a scene recreates how a government alert caused phones across the city to blast sirens. Meanwhile, government banners are seen promoting last year's 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China, with the tagline heralding "A New Era." The anniversary angle brings up thought-provoking contrasts when Chit, Raymond and Ana finally meet and look back on the hopes and feelings they’d written down 25 years ago. Social shifts are also reflected when a man seems worried about others bringing up his past actions, as well as when the subject of emigration comes up. There's a lot to process in Why's unique brand of cinema, and his first two films showed it wasn’t easy to balance clear plotting with all the recording of local places and society. His third film Far Far Away saw him smoothing out the form into a highly watchable package, and that effort continues here with an easily relatable phone topic sitting beside the extensive local coverage. Viewers looking back on the Hong Kong of 2022 should be able to find Why's film an easy-going document of the city and its people in unusual times. [ SCREEN DAILY FILMART 2023 ] Following last year's hit romantic comedy Far Far Away, director Why returns with this drama about three friends who reunite after 25 years. MARRY MY DEAD BODY Rating : IIB Length : 129 mins. Opening April 1 2023 at the Hong Kong International Film Festival Opening April 27 2023 [ HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ] During a pursuit, homophobic police officer Ming-Han inadvertently picks a red envelope off the ground and becomes roped into a ghost marriage with a dead man named Mao-Mao. To get rid of his ghostly groom, Ming-Han agrees to help Mao-Mao find the culprit behind his death. Previously best known for scaring audiences with The Tag-Along series, director Cheng Wei-Hao proves himself to be one of the best genre directors in Taiwan cinema with a rambunctious high-concept comedy that has the comic energy of an old-school Hollywood farce. [ BROADWAY CIRCUIT ] Ming-Han is a passionate policeman in a muscular shape. One day, in the process of arresting a criminal with his beautiful colleague - Zi-Qing, Ming-Han accidentally picks up a red envelope, and a group of people suddenly jumps out to call him "son in law". They ask him to get married with their dead child, who is a dead guy! It is impossible for Ming-Han to accept this decision. However, he doesn't expect to be in misfortune since then. What is even more terrifying is that he begins to see his ghost husband Mao-Mao that scares Ming-Han to death. Therefore, Ming-Han visits a great master to get rid of Mao-Mao. The master tells him that he must get married to Mao-Mao and check Mao-Mao's wish lists; otherwise, Mao-Mao will follow him forever. To get rid of Mao-Mao, Ming-Han has no choice but to help him fulfill all his wishes; at the same time, Mao-Mao also acts like Ming-Han’s partner to help him with the investigation of drug smuggling. A fantasy journey full of laughter and tears between a straight man and a gay ghost has begun. MAD FATE AKA : FATAL FATE Rating : IIB Length : 109 mins. A thematic continuation of his classic films about the neverending struggle between fate and free will, Soi Cheang delivers a gripping thriller with intensity and panache, powered by producer Johnnie To and screenwriter Yau Nai-hoi. OVER MY DEAD BODY Rating : IIB Length : 119 mins. Opening March 10 2023 at the Osaka Asian Film Festival Opening April 4 2023 Teaser : https://youtu.be/57EFTCutFek Site : https://www.oaff.jp/2023/en/program/op.html [ OSAKA ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL 2023 ] Welcome to Seaside Heights, a fancy residential building where a group of residents experience a night of chaos and comedy after the nude body of a man appears and threatens to cause scandal and plunging property values! It all begins when Ming, together with his wife, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law, finds an anonymous naked body lying at their doorstep. Fearing that the presence of a corpse will turn their unit into a "murder home" and its property value will nosedive and impoverish them, their bickering family unite to pass the buck to their neighbours by moving the corpse to other units on the same floor. Their fiendish plot ropes in a motley bunch of people, including retired elderly couple, Mr. & Mrs. CHAN; a single lady and her maid; the CHEUNG's, an irascible father and his cantankerous son; and an overzealous security guard. Last but not least, is a mysterious chain smoking woman named Sue who might hold the key to helping get the body out of the building... A dark comedy of manners and Hong Kong home-ownership woes ensues in "Over My Dead Body" as each of these vividly portrayed characters turns on each other in an effort to avoid taking responsibility for both the body and their own personal problems. ------------ For the week starting May 13 2023 (Week 19) VIUTV CHILL CLUB CHART 5 MIZU AGA https://youtu.be/mZEGEBrzqyc 4 DYSTOPIAN TRILOGY Can : Fan Wu Tok Bong Sam Bo Kuk Cath Wong Yin https://youtu.be/7Ey7AlIBG7w 3 ALL DEAD ANGLE SAILOR MOON Can : Chuen Sei Gok Mei Siu Nui Jin Si LaiYing https://youtu.be/unlae1r6BcA 2 RUMOURS MIRROR https://youtu.be/qqKLKtlVey0 1 ON AND ON Can : Gai Jook Gai Jook On Chan Kin On https://youtu.be/4NaFLerqxaQ TVB JADE SOLID GOLD 5 BUG FIX Archie Sin Ching Fung https://youtu.be/ZDMHOPWYjvk 4 MIZU AGA https://youtu.be/mZEGEBrzqyc 3 LIAR Vivian Koo (Kuk Ah Mei) https://youtu.be/wi0-BZS5ZJs 2 ENDING ENDLESSLY Can : Tung Gwai Yu Jung Vincy Chan (Wing Yi) https://youtu.be/31OpvhKHA9E 1 EYE-OPENER Can : Dai Hoi Ngan Gai Gigi Yim Ming Hay https://youtu.be/NyHCNKrmvII METRO RADIO HIT DOMESTIC CHART 5 REMINSCENCE: DISTANCE Can : Moot Yau Nei Dik Sun Hok Kei Windy Zhan (Tsim Tin Man) https://youtu.be/-O6mOyrLlJ8 4 ON AND ON Can : Gai Jook Gai Jook On Chan Kin On https://youtu.be/4NaFLerqxaQ 3 TRIVAL MATTERS OF US Can : Dan Luen Jeh Gein Siu Si Gin Lee (Lee Hung Ngai) https://youtu.be/GS3h_qm5E6E 2 LIGHTLY Can : Chun Dai Si Eason Chan Yik Shun https://youtu.be/LKMGlj3Y_Lg 1 LITTLE LAM REAL ESTATE Can : Siu Lum Buk Dong Chan Terence Lam Ka Him https://youtu.be/KNwmV-dUBXU COMMERCIAL RADIO 903 TOP 20 5 WHAT IF Can : Man Yut Nei Si Ho Yun Terence Lam Ka Him https://youtu.be/3BgQTkguk0w 4 BUNGEE GUM Can : Sun Sook Ji Yu Dik Oi Panther Chan Lui https://youtu.be/WAbRviznmgY 3 ON AND ON Can : Gai Jook Gai Jook On Chan Kin On https://youtu.be/4NaFLerqxaQ 2 LITTLE EXIT Can : Siu Chook Jau Chantel Yiu Cheuk Fei https://youtu.be/nI2wN61aaQ4 1 SAFETY DISTANCE Can : On Chuen Kui Lei Pandora https://youtu.be/zEMk3gNVEok RTHK CHINESE POP CHART 5 FLORAL SEA Can : Fa Hoi MC Cheung Tin Fu https://youtu.be/zhHaWGpgTDY 4 STARTING FROM ZERO Can : Chung Ling Hoi Chi Dik Sun Sai Gai Jer Lau Ying Ting https://youtu.be/b9lRnd6DU1s 3 PISS OFF Can : Ho Liu La GBOYSWAG (Lui Si Wai) https://youtu.be/3D-ixUMcTPY 2 1 STEP AT A TIME Jaime Cheung Tin Wing https://youtu.be/KrLUkXBpREI 1 MIZU AGA https://youtu.be/mZEGEBrzqyc HUAXIA ORIGINAL GOLD SONG CHART 5 MONDAY Leah Dou https://youtu.be/vos32LuLjZs 4 YOU ARE THE REFLECTED STAR Can : Nei Si Doh Ying Dik Mei Sing Shan Yichun https://youtu.be/nVMlqMpbep4 3 SUNSET OCEAN Can : Bui Doi Dei Kau Bun Pau Teens in Times https://youtu.be/HZuPnz6buvE 2 MY DEAREST Can : Shui Si Jui Oi Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing https://youtu.be/xa0pCqd-n0Q 1 YOU ARE MY WINGS Can : Nei Si Ngor Dik Chi Pong Wang Li https://youtu.be/M7MhimfCjMc --------------------- ILLUME FILMS PRESENT OVER MY DEAD BODY https://www.facebook.com/illume.films.inspire Opening May 19 2023 in North America --------------------- UBC HONG KONG STUDIES INITIATIVE AND ILLUME FILMS PRESENT DATE AND TIME: May 17 2023 @ 7 - 8:30 PM LOCATION: PLACE OF MANY TREES LIU INSTITUTE FOR GLOBAL SSUES UBC (6476 NW MARINE DRIVE, VANCOUVER) [Meet-the-Filmmaker] Join us on Wed, 17 May 2023, at 7pm at Vancouver's University of British Columbia for a conversation with Directors HO Cheuk Tin ("The Sparring Partners" & "Over My Dead Body") and KA Sing Fung ("Lost Love").
