Director Soi Cheang Pou Soi explained the reason he chose Lokman, and praised that his performance in numerous auditioning was rather uniform. "He made me believe that he understood this character." Producer and screenwriter Yau Nai Hoi said that one of the auditions was the stepping in blood scene. Lokman's eyes gave a chilling effect. Playing the son of a cafe owner in the film, Lokman was cruel and violent and had the impulse to kill. He needed to rely on snapping rubber bands to control his desire to kill; Cheang Pou Soi revealed that Lokman did not receive any special protection for the rubber band snapping scene. He did not ask for any protective measure either. In another scene Gordon Lam Ka Tung force fed him charm water, which was also shot directly. Lokman spoke about the rubber band snapping scene, "That type of pain is straight to the heart, at the same time the more it hurt the more I was able to get into the character. When I got home I realized that my hands were all bruised from the rubber bands." * (2023/04/25) Stephy Tang Lai Yun and Edward Ma Chi Wai starred in the film TWELVE DAYS (12 YUT) with Ben Yuen Fu Wa, Johnny Hui Pok Man (Keung Nei), Wong Man Fun, Hui Yin, So Ho, Peter Chan Charm Man, Chloe So Ho Yi, Ashina Kwok Yik Sum, Lee Ying, Fan Kei Chi and other actors, and special performance by directors Lau Wai Heng and Mak Ho Bong. In one scene Stephy and Ma Chi Wai was being romantic at a restaurant, but Hui Yin and So Ho kept interrupting them. Their serious expressions were full of comedic senses. Each time they appeared this couple could not hold back their laughter. Stephy was even "steaming crabs" once, as soon as the director yelled cut she was rolling over from laughing. She said, "As soon as the switch is on it's big trouble, I couldn't stop laughing!" * (2023/04/24) Cya Liu last year with the LIMBO (JI CHI) won the Hong Kong Film Award Best Actress and instantly became the new film industry favorite, working with many Best Actors Andy Lau Tak Wa, Jacky Cheung Hok Yau, Nicholas Tse Ting Fung, Gordon Lam Ka Tung, Best Actress Karena Lam Ka Yun and others. She admitted that she has benefit a lot and felt very fortunate, which caused some ripples inside. "When I worked with them I would question myself, in other decade or two would I be able to persist like they do, still passionate and focused on this career? I hope I would be able to." The 34 year old Cya Liu appeared cool but burnt hot within. She seemed to look cold, completely because she was shy and did not have a way with words. The real her had tender, cute, talkative and other sides. Earlier working with Tse Ting Fung, Cheung Hok Yau, Lam Ka Yun, Francis Ng Chun Yu on the film CUSTOMS FRONTLINE (HOI GUAN JIN SIN) and in another film I DID IT MY WAY (CHIM HUNG) with Lau Tak Wa, Lam Ka Tung and Eddie Peng Yu-Yan, she revealed that she deliberately hid her little fan's emotions. "Luckily I won an award, otherwise I would have been afraid of being no match for him. I know many actors would be very nervous when they meet elders like them, but I wasn't. At work I didn't show the slightest of worship. As an actor have to be professional. They also have very strong affinity, their level of concentration on their performance left me in admiration. When everyone chatted on the set, we mostly talked about the script. Working together was pretty pleasant, relaxed. They were Best Actors and Best Actresses, their existences were like gods. I gained experience from working with them, the most important was learning about life." Wa Jai's A MOMENT OF ROMANCE (TIN YEUK YAU CHING) and Hok Yau's EAGLE SHOOTING HEROES (DONG SING SAI JAU) were both classic films that Cya Liu liked very much. She also has caught on on Wa Jai's recent films, so to be able to work with two elders on film she was secretly elated. "Brother Wa, Brother Hok Yau both said that they would invite me to watch their next concert, and I have successfully joined Brother Wa's WeChat and friend circles. Brother Wa was a superstar and an idol I grew up watching. I regretted a little that when he performed a concert at age 60, I missed it. After making I DID IT MY WAY, he performed a live show on TikTok and had over 300 million views. I dare to ask, in China which male star would be able to be like Brother Wa? I watched too, I was very emotional and posted on WeChat. If you asked me because whom I was a fan of, I might not be say, but now I would say I am Brother Wa's fan." Cya Liu in CUSTOMS FRONTLINE had more scenes with elder colleague Tse Ting Fung and she thanked him for teaching her kung fu. "Brother Fun is a very professional actor, on the set he always does everything himself. He wouldn't use a double and has taught me about action scenes, gun holding techniques and how hard to punch, but he said we were not professional; unlike them with over 20 years of experience, we definitely wouldn't do it, don't touch anything that would threaten our lives. I know he is protecting the safety of actors. This time he was the action director and gave me few action scenes. I didn't have enough fun. I hope to have even more opportunities next time. I am someone who can take a lot of risks." Started as a singer, Cya Liu has accomplished even more after switching to film and television work. She joked that she had no natural talent for music. "I like to sing but it doesn't mean that I can do it very well. I don't plan on releasing another song. If I would have a chance to try something outside of acting, like a reality show, I would be willing." Cya Liu in recent years has been commuting between China and Hong Kong, so finding love was very hard. Sometimes she felt that being single was even more carefree. "I really like to stay at home, I am afraid of going to complicated places with a lot of people. Others feel that I have many friends, but few truly are in my heart. Having a few close friends is enough. Romantically I am looking for someone would make me blush and my heart beat faster, which is easier said than done. Love is something that suddenly gets your heart moving, simple and pure. If I consider him being very handsome, very rich, his family background, how highly cultured he is, none of that is love." * (2023/04/23) Sylvia Chang with A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT (DUN FOR LAN SHAN) won the Golden Horse Award Best Actress. The film after a week in release in Hong Kong seemingly performed worse than expectation, as of April 21st its cumulative box office was HK$ 1,533,908. Entering its second week, its shows were drastically reduced as well. After director Anastasia Tsang Hin Ning issued a "to the death comment", producer Saville Chan Sum Yiu also posted a thousand word essay on social media to send up an "emergency flare" for the film. A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT has received good reviews but its box office has not proportionally benefit. Even Taiwan star Vivian Hsu spoke up, "I would recommend a movie to you, have you seen it yet?" Producer Chan Sum Yiu in the thousand word essay mentioned that the message has been scattered and made the promotion even more difficult. A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT aside from the traditional marketing also held different special screenings, exhibits, photography landmarks and workshops, yet it was still very hard to be seen. Serious promotions were far outmatched by traffic ciphers that you can yell or laugh at. He understood that each person would have different experience from watching a film and have a choice in how to spend their money. He and the director, who studied cultural studies Tsang Hin Ning fell for the "Hong Kong neon light" subject, and made A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT in hopes that through Hong Kong film it would bring even more cultural influence and discussions. Whether the review has been good or bad, they still would gladly listen. He mentioned that the reason behind this adventure to save the light and the shadow with the light and the shadow. "A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT may very likely the last film that could have neon lights as its subject in Hong Kong film history, because almost all the neon lights on the streets have been remove and would not likely return." * (2023/04/22) Anastasia Tsang Hin Ning directed her first feature film A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT (DUN FOR LAN SHAN), which used the neon lights that once brought Hong Kong the "Pearl of the Orient" fame as its story background. She hoped through the film to record and pay tribute to this vanishing industry and craft. She lamented, "The cinematographer and I went to 'sweep the streets' all over Hong Kong, and shot one neon light after another. From the research to completing the production we took 4 years. Neon lights vanished very quickly, almost all gone with only a few left!" She thanked Sylvia Chang and Simon Yam Tat Wa for helping out without salary. Sylvia Chang even during the production and post production editing gave valuable suggestions, only with which the film was completed successfully. Tsang Hin Ning said that Hong Kong's neon lights were also well known overseas. During the research process, she saw many overseas media and television stations that sent teams to shoot the vanishing neon lights. They were even more aware than the Hong Kong media. "We are used to living in Hong Kong, so we don't feel how sudden it was. When I brought it up with friends, they all said, 'Really?'. Everyone now is only concerned with playing on their phones, so they wouldn't raise their heads and look. If no one would alert them, they wouldn't even know if all the neon lights are gone. So I through A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT spread the message to remind everyone to raise our heads to see what we are losing, and at the same time call for everyone's attention so this art would get passed on or exist in another fashion. Actually some neon light masters have already turned them into artwork. Neon light actually is a piece of art." A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT was Tsang Hin Ning's first feature film. Its production budget was only HK$ 5 million, so she could only learn to give and take. "The shoot schedule was tight, more important scenes would use simple production methods. Originally I wanted to shoot hospital and tram scenes, but actually they would have been very expensive and not economical. So I changed my mind, which is somewhat regrettable." She thanked actors like Sylvia Chang and Yam Tat Wa for their contributions and help the movie's smooth completion. Sylvia Chang gave a lot of suggestions to the screenplay and the character. Yam Tat wa participated in the production for 4 days, deliberately returned to Hong Kong and remained in quarantine for two weeks. In addition he really liked neon lights and was very supportive of Hong Kong films. He agreed right away. Tsang Hin Ning said, "I feel I am very lucky. They all lend a helping hand in hopes of preserving Hong Kong culture. In addition they already met my request in one or two takes, and made everyone pay more attention to this film. Their thoughtfulness makes people feel very warm." Tsang Hin Ning felt greedy, wanting to tell anything and everything. Thus A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT originally was 3 hours long. The producer and Sylvia Chang kept telling her to edit down, but she was reluctant. "Until once I watched it from a viewer's perspective and made the determination with instinct. Then I chopped away during editing and ended up with this current release edition." Neon lights were no mach for the giant wheel of time, was it regrettable? She said, "Not everything with a long history has to be preserved. The world is just this big, it can't hold that much stuff. However neon light itself is an art, has aesthetics and is worth preserving. I don't want everyone to lament about the past after watching the film. It is already enough to be like Mei Heung and Leo in the film and preserve some of the spirit. I hope everyone would come up with positive ideas." Tsang Hin Ning said that neon lights represented Hong Kong's glorious side. When the economy took off so many neon light signs were born. Actually they were just like the Hong Kong film industry, which once was very brilliant. "Several years ago people always said 'Hong Kong film is dead'. I feel that as history changes, some of the more vibrant cities have gradually declined; I believe in what the Buddhists say, things go through formation, existence, disintegration and emptiness, people go through birth, aging, disease and death. They never change in the world. However I feel that amid numerous changes, although certain things vanished do value, art and valuable skills truly vanished? No, film became online viewing, film became digital, with some invisible value we would use new ways and methods to pass on. This is what is the most important. The constant talk of film is dead is very strange, if it is not dead then we have to continue to live and create. Actually every era would face many difficulties, why not think about how to live on." * (2023/04/22) Anson Lo is known for working hard. Two nights ago while working on the film WE 12 (12 GWAI DOH) he had an accident during a fight scene, leaving him with a left kneecap injury. He did not ask to stop working immediately, but after toughing out a few more takes he finally could not hold out any longer, needed to stop and rushed home to rest. However with two films on hand he did not dare to take time off. After resting for several hours he worked on the Emperor Motion Picture DOH YUET JEH (MOON THIEVES) with fellow MIRROR member Edan Lui Cheuk On. Due to the severity of his injury he had to slow down even when he got out of a vehicle and appeared to be in a lot of pain. Yet when he shot his running scenes he was still fully immersed, as he and Edan looked for a post office truck in a panic. When they saw the truck pass by they ran. With his injury he performed while trying to hide his pain. When not in the shoot, Anson Lo had painful expressions. Aside from limping along while walking, he often had his hand on his waist. After finishing each shot, he would hold on to Edan tight to rest. Edan was glad to be his "human crutch". Aside from the car chase, Anson Lo also had a scene in which he got into a vehicle and held the driver at gunpoint. Many fans were waiting on the set. When the vehicle drove out of the parking lot, Anson Lo lowered the window and waved to the fans. During the shoot yesterday, not only "human crutch" Edan often helped his group mate but the crew also took great care of Anson Lo. Whenever the cameras stopped they would bring out a chair for him to sit and rest. Manager Sister Fa personally carried an umbrella for him and remained by his side. Around 4PM everyone left the location. Anson Lo yesterday morning still posted on social media, "Over 40 hours of two sided productions begin." As he would challenge his personal limits, he said, "Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations." He encouraged himself with this, but the injury was getting worse and worse. Yesterday afternoon he went to a Chinese medical practitioner for help and updated his social media with the latest news. He revealed that he got hurt two nights ago and thus left work earlier than scheduled, for which he felt very guilty. Yesterday he used his greatest tolerance for pain to finish the car chase and the truck scenes. After getting treated, he was told that he would be fine in a few days. Because of his injury, the production team has already cancelled the originally nonstop shoots so he could focus on resting. He said, "Thank you to the entire team for their understanding. At the same time I have troubled everyone. I am sorry." He also pointed out that he would shoot the dramatic scene first and told fans to relax. Although he was injured he would not forget to care about the fans and told them to take care. * (2023/04/21) Sandra Ng Kwan Yu and her 17 year old Jillian Chan Si Chi yesterday attended a bank promotion event at Central. Kwan Yu said that she, her husband Peter Chan Ho Sun and their daughter worked on a commercial as a family of three, which was a great member. She was the CFO at home, and she would spend 50% of the total family expense on her daughter's education, her personal expense was 10% and her husband got 5%. Chan Si Chi said that she was still in school and did not know how to deal with finances, thank Mommy for the financial support and assistance in her finances so she could relax. Ng Kwan Yu revealed that when her husband was working on the commercial he was excited and nervous. "Chan Ho Sun normally is used to ordering people around as the director, this time he got ordered around. He was afraid that it would be embarrassing and worried that he did not know how to act, so he asked me to keep an eye on him. However when he heard our daughter wanted to start in the business, he immediately toughed it out; his performance was very natural, as soon as he took his mark he handed over 10 different speech tones." She pointed out that her daughter has performed in plays. This time was the first time she act in front of the camera and spent a lot of time on coming up with the dialogue. "Her Cantonese is iffy. I reminded her to speak fluently. She worked very hard." This commercial was considered Chan Si Chi's start in the business, Kwan Yu joked that she was her daughter's manager. Would she make a movie to make her daughter the star? She said, "Leave it up to fate. Let's see if we have any suitable movie. I wouldn't deliberately tailor a role for her. To me, if she wants to be an actor, she still needs to learn in terms of acting." Chan Si Chi in September would attend an university in England in September. Kwan Yu would go with her. If her daughter was determined to develop a show business career, she would let her daughter transfer to study drama in the U.S. "The times are different, Chan Ho Sun and I treat her like a queen. Actually we are afraid that if we would make a movie as a family we would end up turning on each other." * (2023/04/21) Terence Lam Ka Him and Serrini (Leung Ka Yan) earlier were opening guest performers for the 41st Hong Kong Film Awards. They in a style of a musical performed many Hong Kong film classic songs like MAKE A FRIEND WITH HER, LIVELY AND FRAGANT, THE WANDERER'S HEART. Lam Ka Him danced and sang with great effort. However afterward a YouTuber on his online channel brutally criticized Lam Ka Him. "Serrini is OK, as for Lam Ka Him I really don't know describe it, what happened?" He criticized his performance as the worst in television history other than William Hung, which led to internet debates. Some agreed that Lam Ka Him's performance was lacking and should focus on behind the scenes; some supported Lam Ka Him's singing for having his personal style and quality. Lam Ka Him's partner in the performance Serrini got upset at her good friend being slamming and struck back with a social media post. She used foul language to vindicate Lam Ka Him. "Where is my name? Why didn't you yell at me too!" Serrini revealed that that evening the live sound reception and the broadcast sound were very different, she felt very helpless and said that only she could say Lam Ka Him sang badly. "Only I can loudly with two (strong) arms, clamp down on him, shake his shoulders and say his singing is horrible. 'You shut up!'" Serrini stated that she would reply to posts that criticized Lam Ka Him with her new song's music video link, "When I see one I post one". Many fans strongly supported Serrini and Lam Ka Him, and praises Serrini for her loyalty, their performance took a lot of effort and was entertaining; but some felt that she was very petty for not accepting criticism. As for Lam Ka Him his response to the media was no comment. * (2023/04/21) "Fresh Wave" chair Johnnie To Kei Fung, MIRROR member Tiger yesterday attended the 17th Fresh Wave International Short Film Festival press conference, drawing many "Little Tiger Team" (Tiger fans) to show their support and cheer for their idol. To Kei Fung said that he has not made a movie in 3 years. Lately he has been making additional shoots for a colleague and saw many new faces. Young people had a lively energy that was beyond any imagination, as a new era seemingly has appeared. He was happy that now Hong Kong viewers are supporting Hong Kong films and urged young people to be able to live up to the audience while making movies. Tiger directed his first short film TODAY'S SPECIAL and revealed that he became addicted. He would fight for more opportunities to make movies with the company. To Kei Fung said that he has not made a movie in 3 years already. Recently he was helping a company colleague with an additional shoot and realized that the crew were strangers. "I have never seen them before, I don't know whether I am old, or perhaps I have a little distance from the film industry. However when I see the younger generation with lively energy that was beyond imagination, see so many new faces, it seems like a new era has appeared." He urged young filmmakers while making movies to live up to the audience. "In the past year, the Hong Kong film box office has been very bright. I don't know why, but I know Hong Kong viewers are very supportive of Hong Kong films. So the new generation has to remember, your bosses are the investors but the viewers." He said that he invited Tiger to direct the opening short film TODAY'S SPECIAL not because of his fame or a part of MIRROR, but he only hoped that "Fresh Wave" developments would have different elements. In the future he would invite different suitable choices in show business to shoot short films, so everyone would have even more exchanges and knowledge. This time was Tiger's first time directing a short film, which starred captain Lokman Yeung, Anson Kong, Frankie Chan and Jeremy Lee and became the opening film. Tiger was asked why did he only invite 4 members to star? He joked, "I have to find members who have free time!" Earlier he directed a MIRROR music video. He said that they were drastically different. When asked what message would he like to bring out with the short film? He said, "I don't dare to say anything so noble, I made this short film out of selfishness. I put what I like and what I feel into it, so I put in Lokman (Yeung). I wasn't in the cast because I wanted to concentrate on directing." He pointed out that the production process was thrilling and the schedule was tight. He had to finish it in 4 days. Before hand he had to do a lot of homework. During the production he had to control people and events, he would give his work 70 points. "If I would have more time, I would have made it even better." How thrilling was it? He kept that a secret and asked the audience to go and watch it. Tiger said that after completing this short film he was addicted. He has developed a heavy interest in behind the scene work. Would he try the feature film challenge? He said that if the opportunity would arise he of course would like to. Directing was fun and happy, so he would fight for it with the company. What kind of move would he like to make? He said, "I am searching, Sister Fa (Wong Wai Kwan) told me to prepare and write the script. When the opportunity would arrive, I would be able to start work immediately. (Would you ask other MIRROR members to perform?) We are now working WE 12 (12 GWAI DOH). If I would have the chance, I would shoot them standing up the weak and play heroic characters. (Would you take the opportunity to torture them?) I wouldn't need to, they would risk their own lives for the performance." Tiger revealed that earlier he dined with To Kei Fung, they chatted but he did not dare to ask him for advice. "I am afraid that the my question would be too low level and upset him. I have seen his work, my favorite was THE MISSION (CHEUNG FOR). (Would you learn from watching movies?) It's like you learn when you want to." In addition, SPACKED OUT (MO YUN GA SAI), the film Lau Kwok Cheung directed 23 years ago would be this short film festival's opening film. Fresh Wave vice chair Shu Kei said that the film was not a hit and was almost the most neglected movie. Its method and style of depicting young people were very daring and very impactful, it would be able to give the new generation filmmakers a lot of revelation. As for this year's filmmaker in focus he would be the late director Chor Yuen. He received the Hong Kong Film Awards Professional Achievement and Lifetime Achievement Awards. Chor Yuen made over 120 films in his life, the only one in the Hong Kong film industry who span the new and old Cantonese film eras, Mandarin film monopoly era and the Hong Kong film golden age. He also kept setting trends, making film series, and was even the earliest Hong Kong director to accept the "baptism" of European art films. * (2023/04/20) Francis Ng Chun Yu earlier was a guest presenter at the Hong Kong Film Awards and presented the Best Actor award to good friend Sean Lau Ching Wan. He said that he has been nominated for Best Actor six times but lost them ll. Thus he had to hold the award to get the experience. Ng Chun Yu's son Feynman after watching the live television broadcast on social media joked that his father was an "also ran fish", Ching Wan was "Obama". He posted, "In the end the all ran fish still has to give it to the two time winner Obama." Later he also captioned a photo of the moment Chun Yu presented the award to Ching Yu and continued to poke fun at his father. "You can tell how happy the ‘steamed fish’ (Mandarin nickname of Chun Yu) is from holding his boyfriend." After two days, Feynman again posted on social media and tag the Hong Kong Film Award Association president Derek Yee Tung Sing's account. "How are you, Yee Tung Sing. I feel the Hong Kong Film Awards should add a 'Best Also Ran Award'. You can say it's a type of consolation prize, an award for movies like DRIFTING (SHOOK SHUI PIU LAU)." * (2023/04/20) Cecilia Choi Sze Wan in the film A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT (DUN FOR LAN SHAN) played Sylvia Chang and Simon Yam Tat Wa's daughter. She has always admired Sylvia Chang and took the chance to learn form her this time. With Sister Chang's direct in person teaching she benefit lot. As the new generation in the film industry, Cecilia hoped to have the opportunity to play even more roles with even greater contrast to her own personality. She even revealed that in reality she is a bad daughter! In A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT Choi Sze Wan in order to hide her pan of losing her father avoided communication with her moth due to stress. She had many scenes with Sister Chang. "This time the character is tough but her personality is more negative. Often because she worries about Mommy and objects. On a certain level she is a villain, because of different point of view she has a lot of conflicts. She could be said as a bad daughter, from which my acting bug got its fill." Cecilia said that she has always admired Sister Chang and was happy to work with her this time. She said, "Aside from her performance, which also included films she directed, she is a very sharp creator. Of course I have to grasp the chance to chat and learn." This time Sister Chang worked with everyone as an actor. Cecilia admired that she would have exchanges with the actors and the director, respected other actors' choices in their performance, led everyone while at the same time gave them a lot of room to perform. "To be able to watch her performance live this time is already a kind of learning. My favorite was one scene Sister Chang directed in TEMPTING HEART (SUM DONG). In it (Gigi) Leung Wing Kei looked toward (Takeshi Kaneshiro) Gum Sing Mo, made a girl move, I knew they were all the director's ideas. I have always wanted to ask, this time finally I got the chance!" As a new generation actor, she slowly became film viewers' pillar in recent years as new faces kept joining the film industry. Cecilia said, "I am only 28! I hope to have even more films, even more experience. Because I am 28, I already feel awkward playing a secondary school student. Since I am still young and active, I hope to be able to experience some roles that are full of energy, with even more contrast from normally. (Are you a good girl in reality?) Not even contrast, in real life I am a little bad daughter!" [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Ba Ba d. Philip Yung Tsz Kwong Sean Lau Ching Wan FLY ME TO THE MOON Can : Dan Yuen Yun Cheung Gau d. That’s Hong Kong for you – getting married so that a couple can have a place to be intimate. The traditional marriage ceremony is considered old fashioned and cringeworthy in the 21st century, but it’s only supposed to happen once in your life, so people savor in it anyway. And so, the marriage begins out of love, but this is the beginning of many challenges to come. One day, Jeannie realized that the person closest to her has become a stranger. She feels that her ideologies no longer align with those of Simon, and starts to feel ashamed about herself. She feels that her whole life revolved around Simon, and without him, she lacked purpose. Three years later, Simon comes back to her, he's run into a dead end, with his business... [ HONG KONG ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL ] In 2000, screenwriter Aubrey Lam made her directorial debut with Twelve Nights, a heartrending romantic drama that unravels a doomed relationship over a dozen episodes. Two decades later, Lam offers up another searing dissection of modern romance with this long-awaited thematic continuation. On day one, Jeannie and Simon seem to have the makings of a perfect marriage, but the following 11 vignettes reveal the various conflicts, both big and small, that slowly eat away at their bond. Love may build a marriage, but Twelve Days shows that reality can just as easily shatter it. RIDE ON Can : Lung Ma Jing Sun Lit : Dragon Horse Spirit d. Opening April 6 2023 [ BROADWAY CIRCUIT ] "Nomad" describes the sexuality and love of today's young generation. The scene of Ken Tong and Pat Ha making love on the tram arises controversy when it is showed. In contrast, the love between Leslie Cheung and Cecilia Yip is a kind of tender and pure. Cecilia falls in love with Leslie in the first sight, they sympathy each other and then sleep in a reasonable way. This kind of love is more graceful and sweet. Besides sexuality and sex, this film also talks about the infiltration of Japanese culture into Hong Kong. Leslie is westernized but old fashion inside, Cecilia is influenced by Japanese culture and ambitious. This shows the characteristics of Hong Kong's unique culture. This film reflects the youngsters' attitude towards love and sex, which is a breakthrough as it should be a taboo in Hong Kong society at its time. The relationships among the boys and girls are also profoundly described and make it as the most realistic romance movie. YOKAIPEDI d. Gordon Lam and Lokman Yeung are extraordinary as two men standing at the edge of sanity, as they fight an invisible enemy. Berlinale Special. [ BERLIN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ] The sky above Hong Kong is not just heavy with clouds and rain, it also contains astral signs and dark omens in this esoteric neo-noir. In a radical and counter-intuitive move, rather than having the characters' trajectories converge towards the end, the plot instead knits their fates together from the start. Crossing paths at the scene of a heinous crime in a brothel are the serial killer perpetrator and the upstanding detective chasing him, but also a delivery boy obsessed with blood and knives and an occultist feng shui master who had predicted the victim's gory fate without being able to prevent it. The last two quickly form an unlikely pair, and this transforms the film into a surreal, hyperkinetic, expressionist buddy thriller. The horoscopes confirm that the boy will soon succumb to his bloodthirsty temptations, but to redeem past failures and save him from his fate, the fortune teller is willing to do anything. As the investigations gather pace, the pair sinks into delirium in a whirlwind of superstitions, rituals and distortions, against a backdrop of an alchemical metropolis. Story 3: Raymond, a real estate agent, has his phone hacked, and worries that sensitive information about his business affairs might be leaked, and plans to escape the authorities. At the same time, his daughter tries to scam and 'catfish' a computer nerd. [ UDINE FAR EAST FILM FESTIVAL 2023 ] Amos Why’s singular approach to recording contemporary Hong Kong continues in Everyphone Everywhere, a lightly comic drama capturing scenes of pandemic-era life, exploring the cityscape and covering our tight links to mobile phones. Everyphone Everywhere's cross-cutting narrative brings together a large set of players within the mobile-communications theme. First there's designer Chung Chit (Endy Chow), who rushes to catch a ferry and leaves his phone at home. There's no time to retrieve the device, so he tries to soldier on without it – and the results are eye-opening. Eventually, he'll need to call his wife Ivy (Cecilia Choi) to awkwardly help him out. Meanwhile, soon-to-emigrate middle manager Raymond Ho (Peter Chan) starts his day with his WhatsApp account hacked and frozen. Broken contacts aside, his big fear is exposure of shady workplace practices and possible blackmail or arrest. Then there's Ana (Rosa Maria Velasco), an old classmate of theirs who's waiting in a private kitchen and getting odd messages. And all the time a young lady, Yanki (Amy Tang), and a nerdy computer wiz (Henick Chou) are busy using messaging apps for sleazy purposes. Pulling together the various plot strands, Amos Why's fourth feature spins into complex and curious entertainment. The director once again draws on rising talent, here headed by Endy Chow in a relaxed and personable role and with the others drawn from cinema, TV and popular YouTube channels. Viewers are kept on their toes as numerous characters pass by, with some appearing in dual roles and others briefly turning up to give sometimes imaginative faces to those on the other end of messaging exchanges. Why's past plots have been engineered to send cast and crew to as many corners of Hong Kong as possible, but this time things are more focused. Everyphone Everywhere starts on the island of Cheung Chau and trots around the city before settling in the Kwun Tong industrial area, building a sense of place as Chit gets lost trying to find Ana's meeting place within a massive industrial complex. The kindness (or not) of strangers and other little snippets of community life come in too, and Why doesn’t shy away from accurately showing Hong Kong’s outdoor mask-wearing requirement, which ended this March after 945 days: Everyphone Everywhere has its cast join the rest of the public in keeping their masks on. A fun bit of Covid-times weirdness is also thrown in when a scene recreates how a government alert caused phones across the city to blast sirens. Meanwhile, government banners are seen promoting last year's 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China, with the tagline heralding "A New Era." The anniversary angle brings up thought-provoking contrasts when Chit, Raymond and Ana finally meet and look back on the hopes and feelings they’d written down 25 years ago. Social shifts are also reflected when a man seems worried about others bringing up his past actions, as well as when the subject of emigration comes up. There's a lot to process in Why's unique brand of cinema, and his first two films showed it wasn’t easy to balance clear plotting with all the recording of local places and society. His third film Far Far Away saw him smoothing out the form into a highly watchable package, and that effort continues here with an easily relatable phone topic sitting beside the extensive local coverage. Viewers looking back on the Hong Kong of 2022 should be able to find Why's film an easy-going document of the city and its people in unusual times. [ SCREEN DAILY FILMART 2023 ] Following last year's hit romantic comedy Far Far Away, director Why returns with this drama about three friends who reunite after 25 years. Hatao Yamamoto firmly believed that he would return to Japan and meet his wife, Mojimi Yamamoto, and their children someday. 8 years after the war, he received a postcard from his wife with a one-line message written on it, stating that "We are waiting for you to come back". Meanwhile, Hatao Yamamoto's health was deteriorating rapidly. After having a diagnosis, the doctor told him that he had only three months left... After listening to his friends' advices, he decided to write a will and left it to his friends to bring it to his family when they were released. However, the will was seen as a spying message by the officers in the concentration camp and was confiscated... A MOTHER'S TOUCH Can : Ji Jim Jook Doh Dik Oi d. A thematic continuation of his classic films about the neverending struggle between fate and free will, Soi Cheang delivers a gripping thriller with intensity and panache, powered by producer Johnnie To and screenwriter Yau Nai-hoi. However, such signs have gradually disappeared over the years, along with the craftsmen who spent decades mastering the craft of blowing neon lights. It all begins when Ming, together with his wife, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law, finds an anonymous naked body lying at their doorstep. Fearing that the presence of a corpse will turn their unit into a "murder home" and its property value will nosedive and impoverish them, their bickering family unite to pass the buck to their neighbours by moving the corpse to other units on the same floor. Their fiendish plot ropes in a motley bunch of people, including retired elderly couple, Mr. & Mrs. CHAN; a single lady and her maid; the CHEUNG's, an irascible father and his cantankerous son; and an overzealous security guard. Last but not least, is a mysterious chain smoking woman named Sue who might hold the key to helping get the body out of the building... A dark comedy of manners and Hong Kong home-ownership woes ensues in "Over My Dead Body" as each of these vividly portrayed characters turns on each other in an effort to avoid taking responsibility for both the body and their own personal problems. Running April 28-30, 2023 at the Starlight Whittier Village Cinemas, it will showcase 8 feature films, 2 documentaries, 8 shorts curated from a global open call for submissions, and a 20th anniversary tribute of the passing of HK icons Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui. Founded in 2022 in response to the ongoing political upheaval in Hong Kong and China’s encroaching presence in the international city-state, HKOS is a collective of academics, artists, students, and concerned global citizens dedicated to preserving the voice of freedom from Hong Kong and to promote its local culture through cinema, cultural exchange, and dialogue. Since its inception, HKOS has proactively engaged in and/or supported a variety of cultural programming in order to serve the Hong Kong diaspora in the Greater LA area and beyond. This has included a special screening series of recent HK independent films, many of them banned from screening at home, at local indie cinemas and university campuses (USC, UCLA), the HKOS podcast and blog, which platform filmmaker, industry, academic interviews, community news, and provide coverage of industry events, among other information of interest to fostering a global Hongkonger perspective. Recent highlights include Ying e Chi's Keep Rolling Project, Global Hong Kong Studies @ UC's Film Series, "Hong Kong: Lost or Found," and the YouTube channel launch of English Cantopop. Like many Asian diasporic communities in the US, the past three years of the COVID-19 pandemic with its escalating anti-Asian hate and rhetoric have been an equally challenging time for many Hongkongers, whose unique political predicament and worldview are often misunderstood by those in the West, many of whom do not make the distinction between the special administrative region's rule of law and democratic traditions and that of Mainland China. This inaugural film festival aspires to map out these distinctions for a general filmgoing public through its engagement with a cross-section of contemporary HK independent films from drama, thriller, action, rom-com, to documentary, all shot on-location and primarily in the Cantonese dialect, invited guest speakers and area studies experts, and an opening and closing reception. Some HKOSFF 2023 highlights include: 20th Anniversary Tribute to HK icons, Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui (Giants Tribute) Screenings of the HK New Wave classic, Nomad (1982) and director Stanley Kwan's Rouge (1987), director Wong Kar-Wai's Days of Being Wild (1990), and director Johnnie To's cult favorite, The Heroic Trio (1993) w/ invited guest speakers and area studies experts. Through these select films, we hope to honor their indelible contributions to the entertainment industry in Hong Kong and global cinema culture. LA premieres or showcases recent HK films, The Narrow Road, The Sparring Partner, and The Sunny Side of the Street. A showcase of both curated and pre-feature shorts selected from a global open call for submissions, many from emerging and/or student filmmakers. A virtual reality exhibition, "Return to Lee Theatre VR," from the Hong Kong XR Museum. In addition to this LA-based festival, we have partnered up with the Hong Konger Club in San Diego and Bay Area Hong Konger Community to put on two satellite HKOSFFs in tandem. Please check the festival website for those program schedules. The full festival line-up will be announced very shortly. Please visit https://www.hkonscreen.org/ for the latest information. About HKOSFF HKOSFF celebrates the culture and histories of the Hongkonger experience at home and in diaspora through film, community events, and the arts, as a response to the ongoing political upheaval in the international city-state. About HKOS Founded in 2022 by Hongkongers, HKOS is a Los Angeles-based not-for-profit organization that aims to promote Hong Kong art, culture, and creativity through cultural events such as film festivals and art exhibitions.
