MISCELLANEOUS * (2023/04/12) The 41st Hong Kong Film Awards would take place on Sunday (the 16th) at the Cultural Center in Tsim Sha Tsui. 3 Best New Director nominees, THE SPARRING PARTNER (JING YI WUI LONG)'s Ho Cheuk Tin, TABLE FOR SIX (FAN HEI GUNG SUM)'s Sunny Chan Wing Sun and THE NARROW ROAD (JAK LO MEI CHUN)'s Lam Sum were also nominated for Best Director. None of them had confidence to win Best Director. Chan Wing Sun felt that comedy was harder to win with and would treat the race normally; Ho Cheuk Tin picked DETECTIVE VS. SLEUTH (SUN TAM DAI JIN)'s Wai Ka Fai to win Best Director. MIRROR member Edan Lui Cheuk On although has been considered the Best New Performer favorite, he worried that the two film nominations would split the votes. Edan Lui Cheuk On with CHILLI LAUGH STORY (HAP GA LAT) and HONG KONG FAMILY (GOR SI GOR JIT) received two Best New Performer nominees, with group mat MAMA'S AFFAIR (AH MA YAU GOR DAI YI GOR)'s Jer Lau Ying Ting he would face THE SUNNY SIDE OF THE STREET (BAK YUN CHING CHUN)'s Sahal Zaman (Lam Lok) and A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT (DUN FOR LAN SHAN)'s Henick Chou Hon Ning. Seen as the favorite, new film star Edan said that he never thought that he would be nominated for two films. The nomination was already like a victory. He admitted that he worried his votes would be split and become a disadvantage. Thus he never thought about winning. Feeling that his action was still immature, Edan said that being nominated for two movies absolutely was not due to his ability lone. He also had help from the two movies' elder actors and team. "In terms of performance, I was newer in CHILLI LAUGH STORY. I didn't have enough experience and was a little scared. HONG KONG FAMILY's performance was better by comparison. I never treated Jer as the enemy, instead I would pick him. Many people feel Jer performed very well. If he wins I would be very happy for him!" Being picked by group mate Edan, Jer did not have much confidence in himself. He felt that his acting still had a lot of room for improvement. He hoped in the future to have even more opportunities to try different movies and receive even more honing. "I have seen all of the New Performer nominees' work, they are all very amazing. I guess Lam Lok (Sahal Zaman) would win, he performed pretty well. As for my own performance I was very in character, which was very different from my original personality." Seen as the dark horse, Henick Chou Hon Ning treated the race normally. If he would win, the audience were able to sense the chemical reaction between him and elder Sylvia Chang during the production process. "For my first film, I felt that my acting was real and sincere enough. However I also admire Edan a lot because the two film characters are very different. I feel he is very talented." This year's Best Director nominees would be evenly matched. Ho Cheuk Tin's directing debut THE SPARRING PARTNER led with 16 nominations. He was also nominated for Best New Director. Ho Cheuk Tin said, "I have thought about the Best New Director nomination, but never thought about the Best Director nomination. Because from past records, very few directors would be nominated for Best Director with their first film. Maybe because this year new generation directors flooded in, aside from me, TABLE FOR SIX's Chan Wing Sun and THE NARROW ROAD's Lam Sum both received two nominations." He wanted to win Best Film the most, because it would be able to recognize the team's contribution and effort. "If I win any award, I would have to thank them. However I feel DETECTIVE VS. SLEUTHS' Wai Ka Fai has much better odds, because it is very highly different creation. In addition it is a co-production film, it has to pass even more tests than we do." As for Best New Director, Ho Cheuk Tin evaluated THE SPARRING PARTNER for being able to at least play with some gimmick. In comparison his elder Lam Sum's THE NARROW ROAD had a lighter subject and less actors, capturing the audience's hearts would not be easier at all. Thus he picked his elder. TABLE FOR SIX, THE SUNNY SIDE OF THE STREET and WARRIORS OF FUTURE's production each had its own technique. "Chan Wing Sun is very strong, with 6 actors and one set he shot the entire movie. In order to hold on to the atmosphere for two hours, some skills are required. WARRIORS OF FUTURE's Ng Yuen Fai's special effects are also very hard, the whole green screen requires a lot of effort. THE SUNNY SIDE OF THE STREET has South Asian actors, culturally and dialogue deliveries would have to be communicated; the child actor and this very strong actor Brother Chau Sun would also have to be handled. Thus it shouldn't be overlooked." Chan Wing Sun felt that the award would be bonus. "However comedy has always been harder to win awards with. Although Chow Sing Chi with the comedy KUNG FU HUSTLE swept Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor, he had to make comedy for years before he was able to. TABLE FOR SIX was only my second film, so I don't dare to think too much. If I win it would be due to timing, location and people. The other movies are all very outstanding, each with its own different style. It is a battle of taste." THE SUNNY SIDE OF THE STREET's Lau Kok-Rui had no confidence to win, as being nominated was already very rare. The other films all had very strong box office and word of mouth. (The 41st Hong Kong Film Awards Pre Race Predictions) * (2023/04/12) The Teresa Mo Shun Kwan, Ronald Cheng Chung Kei, Edan Lui Cheuk On, Jer Lau Ying Ting and others starred, Ho Cheuk Tin directed film OVER MY DEAD BODY (SEI SI SEI SI SEI SUP SEI) continued to charge ahead at the box office. As for two days ago (the 10th) it has already exceeded HK$ 10 million at the box office! The team continued to work hard on audience appreciation and promoting. As of the last day of the Easter holiday, they have already appeared at over 150 shows! Opened on April 4th, OVER MY DEAD BODY as of April 10th has made over HK$ 10.32 million to become the Chinese film box office champion over Easter. The team also worked hard on audience appreciation events, as the leads personally attended audience appreciation events and gave away gifts to viewers. The film's creators including producer Chin Siu Wai, director Ho Cheuk Tin, Teresa Mo Shun Kwan, Ronald Cheng Chung Kei, Wong Yau Nam, Jennifer Yu Heung Ying, Edan Lui Cheuk On, Yeung Wai Lun, Lau Kong, Bonnie Wong Man Wai, Jer Lau Ying Ting and Cheung Yuen Moon over Easter and the earlier preview screenings attended audience appreciation events. As of two days ago, the final day of the Easter holiday, the team attended over 150 audience appreciation shows. Aside from receiving encouragement, they also got a lot of praises that OVER was a rare dark comedy in recent years. The team had close contact with the audience. Sister Mo even took a photo with the palace costumes that she has worn earlier upon arriving at the cinema. The Hong Kong Box Office Co. Ltd. yesterday announced that this Easter holiday from April 7th to 10th, the total film box office gross was HK$ 30,047,408. The overall film consumer market trend continued to rise. In comparison to the 2021 Easter slot (April 2nds to 5th) when cinemas in coordination with the government's pandemic prevention policy restricted admission to 75%, the total box office rose by 5.41%. In comparison to the pre pandemic 2019 box office over the same period, it also rose HK$ 1.59%. Among the film releases for thee 2023 Easter slot, the best performer was the animated film THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIES. It made HK$ 14,966,311 over 4 days. In second was the Hong Kong film OVER MY DEAD BODY with HK$ 5,827,455. The Hollywood film JOHN WICK CHAPTER 4 after 18 days in release still made HK$ 3,529,095 over Easter in third place. In fourth was DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES, which made HK$ 1,103,681 over East; the hit Japanese animation SUZUME over Easter made HK$ 1,082,532 in fifth place. * (2023/04/12) The fourth show of the SAM HUI IN ONE PLACE concert 2023 took place two nights ago. Sam Hui Koon Kit's stage charm remained until the end of the show, as the audience was unwilling to leave the Hong Kong Coliseum until after the final song KEEP SMILING. As Sam mentioned many times before, he wanted to pass on Cantonese songs. Thus every night the guest performer would be singers from different eras and different genres, like handing off the baton they performed Sam's songs with him. The first three nights only had one concert guests each night, but the fourth night had two. Sam said when introducing the first guest. "1964 had a very moving Italian love song, in 2004 I gave it Chinese lyrics and the song title was KISS MY CHEEK. 19 years later, I received a call from D'Topnotes singer Christine Samson. She told me, she has a student named Georgina Henderson. She is only 16. Although she is a foreigner, when she sings KISS MY CHEEK she has a lot of emotions. So tonight I want to introduce her to everyone." Georgina after appearing on stage performed KISS MY CHEEK, by the second verse applause already arose again from the audience. Sam later introduced the second guest. "She frequently participates in our Sunday band jam. She isn't just pretty, she also sings very outstandingly. She is Chan Hoi Tung." Lillian Chan Hoi Tung performed INVINCIBLE IS LOVE with Sam. After the song Lillian said, "Thank you Uncle Sam for always helping me. Only because of you can I return to the Hong Kong Coliseum again. I feel Uncle Sam is very amazing, because he is the Cantonese song Song God." Sam after completing the performance that night took a photo with Sam's Angels, who came to show their support and were backstage waiting for him. They caught up on the good old days. * (2023/04/11) The 41st Hong Kong Film Awards would take place Sunday night at the Cultural Center in Tsim Sha Tsui. The awards this year finally "returned to normal" after 3 years of the pandemic, naturally it would have no margin for error and would make an event out of it. Reportedly, the award association has already extended a sincere invitations to the fresh out of the oven Oscar Best Actress Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King) in hopes that she would make a surprise appearance and be the guest presenter for one of the important awards. Michelle has already confirmed to return to Malaysia to celebrate the joy of winning the award with family and fans on April 18th. Before going home, she who has always been supportive and concerned with the Hong Kong film industry development would stay in Hong Kong for a few days. In addition she has not stepped foot on the Hong Kong Film Awards red carpet in a very long time, then conceivably the chances of her agreeing to "return for a visit" would be rather high. Yesterday a release has been issued and cited that Michelle in two days would attend an event with Karen Mok Man Wai, Kathy Chow Man Kei and others. This year the Hong Kong Film Awards' focus would remain on the race for Best Actor and Best Actress. After several rounds of voting, the Emperor Motion Picture DETECTIVE VS. SLEUTH (SUN TAM DAI JIN) nominee Sean Lau Ching Wan led the Best Actor category. Many industry insider felt that his character was very hard to master. Ching Wan's performance has always been rather appropriate, in addition earlier at the Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild he won Best Actor. Naturally his chances would be considered better. Ching Wan also received votes from many viewers at a recent media online viewers poll. If he would win the award, it would be his third Hong Kong Film Award after winning one for MY NAME IS FAME (NGOR YIU SING MING) and OVERHEARD 3 (SIT TING FUNG WON 3). The Best Actress competition was even more fierce. "Good actors" MAMA'S AFFAIRS' Teresa Mo Shun Kwan and A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT (DUN FOR LAN SHAN)'s Sylvia Chang each had her own supporters. The latter months ago won the Golden Horse Award Best Actress. The experienced Louisa So Yuk Wa also joined the fray and absolutely made the choices for jury very difficult, the race could absolutely go down to the wire. New comer Angela Yuen Lai Lam has already conceded defeat, earlier at an event she was asked whether she had any confidence to win Best Actress. She said, "Absolutely not!" In addition, according to reliable sources Wu Fung would receive the "Lifetime Achievement Award" for his 70 years in film and to honor his selfless contributions to film and show business. The event hoped to be able to invite Sau Sau's former Cantonese film co-stars "Seven Princesses'" Connie Chan Bo Chu and Nancy Sit Ka Yin to attend and personally present the award to Su Sau. If it would happen it absolutely would be the "reunion of the century". Chan Bo Chu has not appeared in public for a long time, thus fans would certainly be pleasantly surprised. * (2023/04/11) Known as the "cold faced comedian", veteran film star Richard Ng Yiu Ho yesterday was rumored to have passed away at age 83. The news of Ng Yiu Hon's passing came from his family group chat, the content of which mentioned that his family received the doctor's notice that Ng Yiu Hon might pass away on the 9th and he urged his family to rush to the hospital to see him for the last time. His family remained by his side and prayed. Ng Yiu Hon's heart stopped and once required equipment to resuscitate his heart again. Finally the doctor signed the certificate to confirm Ng Yiu Hon's death. Reportedly Ng Yiu Hon's wife Susan confirmed the death of her husband's passing, in a text message she expressed that they have been deeply saddened by the tragic news and hoped that her family would be given some privacy. Excelled in comedy performance, Ng Yiu Hon was the son of one of Kowloon Motor Bus and Kowloon Funeral Parlor's founder Ng Hoi Lam. He was the youngest son of the second family. At age 7 his birth mother passed away and since he was raised by his mother of the main family. Out of the 16 siblings he was constantly picked on. Later he was sent to a boarding family. Even when he was able to return home on weekends, he would rather stay at school and fish. At age 15 he was again sent to English for boarding school. While in school he switched from studying dentistry to drama. After graduation he participated in BBC series but unfortunately did not worked out too well. In the 70s he returned to Hong Kong and once operated a hair salon with his wife. By chance he received his client Elaine Jin (Kam Yin Ling)'s recommendation to join TVB and create for THE HUI BROTHERS SHOW. Later he again moved to on screen performance. On Hong Kong television, in 1989 Chow Leung Suk Yee invited Ng Yiu Hon to join ATV and worked on Hong Kong first hidden camera prank show FUN TIME. Due to its popularity it became the highest rated ATV program and received multiple renewals. The show even made HK$ 5 million for the television station. He founded Pioneer film company in 1975 and worked as a creator and an actor. He caught Michael Hui Koon Man's eyes and was invited to take part in PRIVATE EYE BLUES (BOON GUNG BAK LEUNG), beginning his journey in film. Ng Yiu Hon participated in over 100 films. Other than comedy, he also gave outstanding performance in dramatic and family films. His excellent performance in BEYOND THE SUNSET (FEI YUEN WONG FUN) even earned him a Hong Kong Film Awards Best Actor nomination. His funny performance in movies like THE PILFERER'S PROGRESS (FAT CHIN HON), MURDER MOST FOUL (FONG SUT SUT), CARRY ON PICKPOCKET (TAI FONG SIU SAU), POM POM (SUN YUNG SEUNG HEUNG POW) was deeply ingrained into people's hearts. He even with 1983's WINNERS AND SINNERS (KEI MAU MIU GEI NG FOOK SING) and 1989's BEYOND THE SUNSET excellent acting was nominated for the Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor twice. Reportedly his salary in the 80s was HK$ 1 million per film. He admitted that whenever he made a movie he would buy a home at Clearway Bay and Sai Kung, at the time he was estimated to be worth over HK$ 100 million. By the mid 90's, Ng Yiu Hon emigrated to English for a semi-retired life. He participated in the English television series THE BILL. He still would return to Hong Kong and guest star out of interest, like in SAUSALITO (YUT GEIN JUNG CHING), the Hollywood film LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER - THE CRADLE OF OF LIFE, in 2013 he returned to make the movies like RIGOR MORTIS (GEUNG SI) and LITTLE BIG MASTER (NG GOR SIU HAI DIK HAU JEUNG). In 2019 he revealed that he had kidney failure and needed dialysis four times a day. His kidney function was down to 10% and he could not help but had to stop working. In addition his hearing also declined to around 70%, but he was stubborn. Finally his wife had to buy him a hearing aid before he was willing to use it. Ng Yiu Hon was married twice in his life. At age 21 he married an English woman, but they were divorced half a year later until his current wife Susan appeared. His current wife was famous hair care product Vidal Sassoon's first generation student and Bruce Lee's official hairstylist. They had 3 daughters and 1 son, son Carl Ng Ka Lung was once in film. He, his wife and their two daughters resided in Sai Kung. The father and son in recent years already rarely appeared on screen, the two daughters were arrested for drugs before. Ng Yu Hon worked on many films in his life and with many in the business. Some released statements to remember him. Michael Hui Koon Man said, when working together on THE HUI BROTHERS SHOW he discovered Ng Yiu Ho's comedy potential and gave him the opportunity to guest star. He later transitioned to acting and was known as the "cold faced comedian". Hui Koon Man felt that his style was strict while Ng Yiu Hon was light and mischievous. Having worked with Ng Yiu Hon, Eric Tsang Chi Wai and Michael Miu Kiu Wai expressed regret over his passing. Chi Wai felt that the WINNERS AND SINNERS scene in which Ng Yiu Hon thought that he succeeded in his invincibility training and went completely naked except for an exhaust pipe was memorable; he admired Ng Yiu Hon's comedic performance that came from body language and not exaggerated expression or dialogue. He made many contributions to Hong Kong comedy films. Tsang Chi Wai worked with Ng Yiu Hon the most on the LUCKY STARS film series. He said that in the film the five of them seemed to have lived a special lifetime. "Once we couldn't get one shot for the entire day, because no one would hold in their laughter." He said that the previous time he worked with Ng Yiu Hong was the 2017 film VAMPIRE CLEANUP DEPARTMENT (GAU GEUNG CHING DOH FU). "At the time he was still very healthy. Later due to the pandemic we haven't seen each other, I only learned from the news that he was in poor health. When I found out he passed away I was very sad. I really cherish this friend, and also thank him for his contribution to show business." Chi Wai said that Ng Yiu Hon not only influenced many of his co-stars in show business, but he was also a mentor and a friend to him. "In 1976 he was still a stuntman, he told me if I liked to come up with ideas I might as well learn to be a screenwriter. Thus he had quite an influence on my show business life. He was very humorous, really liked to joke around. He was quite a gentleman. The cold faced comedian, his comedy performance was unique. From him I have learned a lot. In many of the 1980s comedy he deserved a lot of the credit." Miu Kiu Wai said that he lamented about the news of Ng's passing. He remembered that they worked together on LUCKY STARS 20 years ago. He felt Ng Yiu Hon was Mr. Nice Guy and humorous, so work was always full of laughter. However at work he was also professional. Ultimately he was in his 80s, perhaps it was a kind of release. He wished that he would be able to reach Sukhavati soon and sent his condolences to his family. One of the "five lucky stars" Stanley Fung Shui Fun posted on social media. "I am shocked to hear about Ng Yiu Hon's passing and couldn't be sadder. Old brother was one of my extreme few close friends in Hong Kong, I never thought that we would no longer destined to meet again! Brother Richard: have a safe journey, may be enjoy eternal peace and joy in Heaven!" Andrew Lam Man Chung was surprised to learn about Ng Yiu Hon's passing and said that due to the pandemic he has not seen him in a very long time. The previous time was promoting A LIFETIME TREASURE (YU JI YU BO) in 2019. Ah Chung said, "I asked Ng Yiu Hon what would he wish for? He answered, "I want to live longer!' At the time he already knew that he had health problems, but during the shoot he was very professional. His performance was very touching, and no one would have been able to detect that something was wrong with him. He would even joke around with me." Ah Chung said that for now he would not call Ng Yiu Hon's son Ng Ka Lung, as he hoped to give Ng room to settle his emotions. Ah Chung saw Ng Yiu Hon as one of his idols. He really admired his 1980s LUCKY STARS film series performance and ATV variety program FUN TIME. "When I first got into film, I was very happy to work with him on TILL DEATH SHALL WE START (SHUI GWAI GIU CHEUNG GEUK) in 1990. He just finished FUN TIME and I followed him with the ATV variety program THE MAD MAD COMEDIANS. This elder was very playful, could really joke round, passionate about work and was a very positive artist." Ah Chung on social media posted his photo with Ng Yiu Hon to remember him. Working with Ng Yiu Hon on A LIFETIME TREASURE, Louis Cheung Kai Chung and Bob Lam Sing Bun both were saddened over the elder's passing. Cheung Kai Chung praised Ng Yiu Hon as a great elder, on the set he would share many filmmaking and life experience. "I am very honored to have the chance to work with this very professional and outstanding master class actor. He talked about being an actor a father would miss a lot of time to be with his children, which was very memorable to me. I remembered not to miss the children's growth and the opportunity to be with them." Lam Sing Bun said, "Although I didn't have many opportunities to work with him on a scene, while waiting for our marks everyone got to chat. When we dined together we talked, he was a very friendly elder. I also told him I watched his films and program FUN TIME when I was little, they were classics among classics. He also shared the fun experience from the prank show." Playing a couple with Ng Yiu Hon in the film RIGOR MORTIS, Nina Paw Hee Ching was currently in England. She praised Ng Yiu Hon as one of the comedic actors with the most personal style in Hong Kong film. He even exaggerated and was a strong influence. She said, "When we worked together on RIGOR, I learned a lot from him. He had to spend 4 hours in make up with eating or drinking, which was very admirable. We even used foul language together in the film. It was the first time I did so in a movie, which was very memorable and fun. I would always miss him." The film's director Juno Mak Chun Lung said, "I would always miss that unique and one of a kind sense of humor." Lawrence Ng Kai Wa on social media remembered his uncle Ng Yiu Hon. "I remember when I was little our whole family went to your first movie THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE LOSER's premiere. At the time you were already our idol. Thank you for your help and care of my Ma all along. Uncle, have a safe journey! Kai Wa would miss you always!" * (2023/04/11) The film A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT (DUN FOR SHAN LAN) would open on April 13rd. Lead actress Sylvia Chang (Sister Chang) has always liked neon lights very much, feeling that they represented the multiple cultures and energy of the city. As early as 30 years ago when she directed MARY FROM BEIJING (MUNG SING SI FUN), Sister Chang already put neon light visuals into her shots. She said, "Neon lights can really represent Hong Kong. The lead actress in the film Gong Li played a woman who came to Hong Kong from the mainland. She stood under the neon lights, which was a very symbolic visual." In real life, Sister Chang really loved to look at the lights on Hong Kong Island from Kowloon during Christmas and thought it was especially beautiful. This time because A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT's subject was neon light, with the touching story she finally reduced her salary and took the role. Playing Sister Chang's husband, Simon Yam Tat Wa grew up in Wan Chai so he had a connection to neon lights. Facing the days of neon lights being rapidly removed, Brother Wa said, "We all grew up under the neon lights. If the Hong Kong government can set up a special district and concentrate the colorful neon lights there, it would become a landmark that definitely would attract tourists." Guest starring in the film, Mimi Kung Chi Yan also said that she really liked the Tai Ping Koon's neon lights because she loved to dine at the restaurant the most. The restaurant's neon lights was the most memorable to her. Due to the characters' requirement, Sister Chang, Brother Wa and new comer Henick Chou Hon Ning all before the production began, wen to the film's neon light consultant Master Wu Chi Kan's workshop to learn the basic knowledge. Ah Ning after finishing the shoot developed a heavy interest in neon light production and went to study at the master's workshop further. However the Master refused to make Ah Ning an apprentice, as he joked that he was afraid Ah Ning would become an actor who was squandered by neon lights. Ah Ning also spent 4 days to complete an unique neon light for Sister Chang. Sister Chang was pleased with the surprise, praised the light was "very nice" and took it home. * (2023/04/11) Sam Hui Koon Kit two nights ago completed the third show of his "SAM HUI IN ONE PLACE concert 2023" at the Hong Kong Coliseum. Viewers had nothing but praise for Sam's hold nothing back on the stage professionalism and his friendly style. Everyone said that this concert was well worth spending seven years to wait for. Sam introduced the third night's special guest. "Cantonese songs need to be passed on, so every era would have some very outstanding singers. Most recently I really admire a new creative singers. She and I have some things in common -- learning how to write music and lyrics, and she is my junior at the Hong Kong University. Has anyone heard of the song YAU TSIM MONG BLONDE LING? Everyone can probably guess who she is? This song of hers and my TSIM SHA TSUI SUSIE are a little similar, please with your most passionate applause welcome Serrini (Leung Ka Yan)!" As Serrini appeared on the stage, Sam played and sang TSIM SHA TSUI SUSIE with her. After the song Serrini first thanked Sam for inviting her to be her concert guest. Her parents were also came to show their support. Sam asked her where they were but in the end they could not find them. Serrini joked that the audience probably would not know her and would suspect why would this seemingly very fertile girl would appear on the stage. Then she said to Sam, "My Papa really likes to sing your songs, Papa always says your song titles like WHY HAVE A WEDDING BANQUET, DON'T TREAT ME LIKE A FOOL and MONEY WOULD CONTINUE TO COME are like my song titles. I have some very strange songs; but because Sam you have blazed this trail, I don't feel my song titles are strange. I can write whatever I like." Sam said that he liked Serrini's songs very much, strange and very cute. Serrini said, "Actually Hong Kong University has a course, each time the first several classes discussed your work, Sam. You are a very important legacy for our Hong Kong." Sam after many thank yous on the stage sang with Serrini a song that he thought was very meaningful, INVINCIBLE IS LOVE. He even put down his guitar, held Serrini's hand and walked a lap on the stage to perform this song so all of the viewers would be able to experience that warmth from within. * (2023/04/10) New director Ho Cheuk Tin felt very lucky. After completing THE SPARRING PARTNER (JING YI WUI LONG) and before its release, he immediately had the opportunity to direct his second film OVER MY DEAD BODY (SEI SI SEI SI SEI SUP SEI). The two films were drastically different, but Ho Cheuk Tin said that OVER basically was a tragedy. Related to death, both were ensemble films. From many characters many panorama could be see, which actually was a little similar to SPARRING. Only the methods of expression and genres were different. "If everyone watched OVER MY DEAD BODY in detail, they would see a lot of metaphors. After 3 years of the pandemic, I hope everyone are like the film's ending. After being stuck inside a building for the whole night, we finally made it and could breathe a sigh of relief." Ho Cheuk Tin praised Wyman Wong, who wrote the lyrics for the OVER MY DEAD BODY film theme song SALTED FISH GAME, for using "salted fish" to teach everyone how to face adversity. "The term salted fish would give people infinite imagination, how would salted fish come back to life? As the lyrics said as long as you are willing to persist, one day better days would come." He agreed that happy days would be here again. For years Hong Kong films have been declared dead, but it still is around. A GUILTY CONSCIENCE passed HK$ 100 million at the box office, and his THE SPARRING PARTNER also became the category III film champion. Perhaps the most difficult time has already passed and the light at the end of the tunnel could be seen. It might not necessarily be absolute, it was still a good start. "We may not be able to change the reality, but a positive attitude would make thing happen toward good. Since whether good or not it would still be a day, you might as well be a little more positive." Ho Cheuk Tin admitted that making a comedy and making people laugh were very hard. Fortunately he had outstanding comedy actors Teresa Mo Shun Kwan and Ronald Cheng Chung Kei to help. After watching OVER MY DEAD BODY, viewers praised the Lau Kong and Bonnie Wong Man Wai played retired silver haired couple Mr. and Mrs. Chan as quite the pleasant surprise. Ho Cheuk Tin said that the pair was perfect. Mr. Lau rarely played comedy, but his foundation was great. His action skills were beyond anyone's imagination. Originally thinking that he came for the comedy, but in the end the touching spot fell on Mr. Lau. "It might have been Mr. Lau and Sister Bonnie's first time working together, but they were very compatible and very funny. I really like Sister Bonnie's look. She brought to life the middle class, husband domineering Betty. I hope after viewers watched the film, they wouldn't just remember her as the mother in law from FAT CHOI SPIRIT (LEK GOO LEK GOO SUN NIN CHOI) 20 years ago. They would also remember this character Betty." Playing the building security "Security guard Lee", Lee Seung Ching was also a bright spot. Actually he was producer Chin Siu Wai's only choice, feeling that Lee Seung Ching could not be more suitable for this tongue twisting part. The producer even said to Ho Cheuk Tin, if he did not know Lee Seung Ching and had any reservation, he could watch Stephen Chow Sing Chi's MERMAID again. Ho Cheuk Tin said, "Lee Seung Ching held his own even opposite a strong actor like Wen Zhang, instead he stood out very much. Security guard Lee is a minor character with special abilities. His memory was very strong and he has given a lot of pressure, the part in which he blew up after being ignored was great. Their performance was even better than imagined. Mr. Lau got more and more into the world of the film, had an understanding of his role, and gave a lot of suggestions. His open to discussion professionalism is well worth younger generations to learn from." OVER MY DEAD BODY followed up the HK$ 43 million success of THE SPARRING PARTNER, thus Ho Cheuk Tin had confidence in the former and felt that it would be able to surpass the latter at the box office. "This time is a category IIB family movie, with many more young viewers. I hope it would do better than THE SPARRING PARTNER. I hope 18 year old viewers would get to know me and Yeung Wai Lun through this film." Would he have any pressure? He said, "I have done all I could, I hope it was good. I think positively, this year has been a minor rebound. However A GUILTY CONSCIENCE set an over HK$ 100 million box office record, OVER MY DEAD BODY might not make as much. GUILTY had the timing, the location and the people, but I felt it was a good thing. When a movie gave such a good start, I hope we can keep it going and have even more viewer support." Ho Cheuk Tin is a new director, his first film THE SPARRING PARTNER (JING YI WUI LONG) was a commercial and critical hit. It made HK$ 43 million at the box office. When the second film OVER MY DEAD BODY opened, the audience response has also been decent. Would he feel very lucky? He admitted, "Having the chance before the first film was edited I am already very lucky. The production budget was even bigger than the first, the last time was around HK$ 10 million. This film was HK$ 15 million. The stars were bigger, and I got to try and learn many things. OVER MY DEAD BODY for me was a whole new world. I have never built so many sets for a shoot, it felt like I experienced several movies." Ho Cheuk Tin never would have guessed that his director journey would be so smooth. He hoped that it would only keep getting smoother, and would have the chance to try different genres. "I am very envious of directors of the 1980s and the 1990s, directing many movies a year. Like To Kei Fung, he made any and all the genres, comedy, action, romance, had different attempts and explorations. From the process he continued to gain experience. Although his THROWDOWN (YAU DOH LUNG FU BONG) only had average performance, just like its dialogue 'when you are thrown you have to get back up' it is very inspirational. So as long as it's not a very upsetting subject, I would want to give it a try." Ho Cheuk Tin saw To Kei Fung as his goal, overseas he liked Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg. "Scorsese would shoot any genre and subject, even children's movie; Spielberg too, making politics, children and science fiction. He truly is a powerful director, actually with any genre or subject he would want to make it the best." For his next movie he would like to make a sports movie, because his graduation film was a short film about basketball. After 10 years and 2 movies, he felt that he would have the ability and the experience to be able to make the basketball movie even better, to make the short film into a feature film; in addition he also would like to make a movie similar to Japanese director Ryusuke Hamaguchi's, with one background and two actors for the entire film and absolutely no gimmick. * (2023/04/10) Yesterday a mainland report claims that the Jackie Chan invested and starred film RIDE ON has 24% scheduling but the box office performance was the opposite, showing "everyone cares less and less about Jackie Chan". The Hong Kong International Film Festival CEO Albert Lee said that the 48th Hong Kong International Film Festival has been tentatively scheduled to take place between March 28th and April 8th, and would still run over 12 days. He continued, "The film festival's Cine Fan event would hold a Jean-Luc Godard retrospective in May, June and July as a tribute to the master who passed away last year. The Summer International Film Festival that was cancelled last year would return this year." Koo Tin Lok, Angela Yuen Lai Lam, Tony Wu Tsz Tung and VITAL SIGN's executive producer Lau Chan Hoi Wan (Kimbee) last night attended the film's world premiere. The film mainly would be about how to handle several large scale accident. He also said that after the pandemic he wanted to make more therapeutic movies. Goo Jai said that VITAL SIGN would be the first, and the others were under preparation. "The most important is how to calmly handle and evaluate (the situation). Being able to bring viewers the therapeutic feeling is very important, especially during the pandemic. Everyone was wearing a mask. Lately I began to come in contact with music therapy. (Because of a lot of pressure?) I just want to study whether I could turn this into the subject of the next movie!" As for Kimbee wanting play the fat housewife role, Goo Jai reacted after hearing that, "No way! Let me arrange the character for her, but it won't be the fat housewife. Let's see what she would want to play, let me think about it." Recently Goo Jai with WARRIORS OF FUTURE (MING YUT JIN GEI) won the Huading Awards "Chinese film Best Actor". Goo Jai said that he was very happy. "I never thought that I would be able to win Best Actor with a science fiction film, the feeling is a little hard to describe. Thank you everyone for your support. I also hope that Hong Kong in the future would be able to make even more different types of movies." VITAL's executive producer Kimbee revealed on behalf of the Joseph Lau charity foundation would work with Goo Jai on five films. VITAL was the first, the subjects of the films would be mainly inspirational stories. Would she be interested in getting into the film industry? She said, "Because the pandemic has had a drastic impact on every industry and business, earlier everyone was suffering. With the spirit of helping each other and getting over hardship with everyone, the plan is for everyone to have a job." She stressed that she did not deliberately invest in film. If in the future with good scripts she would not continue investing. Would she consider guest starring in a film? She joked, "Of course not! I wouldn't want to frighten anyone, let's see if there is any fat housewife role." Yuen Lai Lam dressed up for the event but kept trying to fix it. She said that lately she got thinner because the Hong Kong Film Awards would take place soon. The Best Actress nominee said that she would not be too sexy that nigh and joked that she did not have what it would take. "I would wear a simple dress, it wouldn't be too gimmicky." Speaking of her confidence, she stated that she did not have any to win and picked Sammi Cheng Sau Man to win. She just saw Sammi's nominated film last week, really liked her character and was able to see a different side of Hong Kong. Wu Tsz Tung said that due to the pandemic he decided to join the Hong Kong baseball team again. Would it hinder his acting work? He said, "For now it's nothing special, because I still haven't had a job. However I spent all the money so I have to start working! I would play again after making money." * (2023/04/10) The second show of the 7 show SAM HUI IN ONE PLACE concert series 2023 took place two days go. Sam continued to use his boundless energy to play and sing on the stage and spent a pleasant holiday event with everyone. During the encore after singing HALF CATTY EIGHT TAEL, Sam said, "Tonight's special guest is someone I really admire. He is a very talented singer among the young generation right now. He is handsome, cute, sings very well, knows how to write many different good songs. Does everyone know who he is? Everyone please with your most passionate applause welcome Cheung King Hin!" Hin Jai after appeared on the stage immediately knelt to Sam out of respect. Then they performed EVERYTHING IS LIKE CHESS. Sam after singing the song realized that one of the strings on the guitar was broken and immediately asked the crew for a different guitar. Hin Jai thanked the crowd for the applause, and said that tonight's performance was a little like a test for him. He was very nervous. He then said, "Actually tonight to be able to be Sam Gor Gor's concert guest, it is the most important night in my entire professional career. I never thought that I would be able to sing with our Mr. Hui Koon Kit. You are our god." Sam God joked that Hin Jai was His Majesty too, while Hin Jai humbly said that next to him he was only his Siu Hin Ji. "Yesterday I watched your concert, today I also watched your rehearsal. Singing to you seems to be something you were born to do." Sam admitted that he really liked singing, especially for an audience. When everyone was happy, he was happy. Hin Jai revealed that many studio elders said that Sam wrote songs very fast, as soon as inspiration arrived he would very rapidly write something. Hin Jai as a singer felt that Sam's contribution to music has surpassed a lot. "For example in the early 70s, music from the West was the mainstay in Hong Kong. Sam Gor Gor not only very successfully put some Cantonese into his lyrics, but also sang the Cantonese vowel very well. In addition listening to Sam Gor Gor's work is like finishing a very beneficial book, like the next song. In our life journey, it is like a bottle of very fine red wine. As our life experience kept growing, its lyrics would become more and more meaningful. Every verse would become wiser and have more depth, so tonight I chose this song to sing with Sam Gor Gor." Then Sam introduced this song to everyone as SILENCE IS GOLDEN. Hin Jai also ended his exciting guest performance under everyone's applause. * (2023/04/10) Cecilia Choi Sze Wan earlier talked about her new film on HOY TV. Cecilia in the film played Sylvia Chang's daughter, for which she felt super honored. "In the process of working with Sister Chang, I sensed that she wouldn't treat us new actors like kids. I had a feeling that I was being respected, because she would treat us as professional actors. She would then listen to our exchanges about the performance. We would also communicate over acting, so I am very grateful that she didn't treat us like children and respected us. Everyone got along just like professional actors." Cecilia liked the ending with Sister Chang the most. "I don't know why that moment is very touching, a kind of very triggered emotion suddenly flooded out and felt like a very delicate mother and daughter feeling." Winning Best Actress at age 25 with BEYOND THE DREAM (WAN OI), Cecilia felt that she was very lucky. "My first lead movie role was BEYOND THE DREAM, which was already a character with a lot of room to perform with. However I feel each character can have room to play. I can find similarities and differences within. The characters I have played are too mild mannered, I would soon finish playing all the professionals like therapist, social worker. This time I played an architect, which had a very righteous feeling. I hope to be able to challenge different characters. As an actor, as a container, I hope to be able to have even more different colors." When asked what was the foulest thing Cecilia has said, she said that she would use some more vulgar foul language. "Some directors asked me, Ceci would you know how to use foul language, you probably wouldn't use it! They would feel that way and I would smile and say, I don't know? Sometimes it's normal human behavior. Sometimes when I get very mad, I have to use those words to express myself; which is very normal. When I am in a public place, I don't want to be a bad influence on children so I would need to control myself." * (2023/04/09) The Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi and Richie Jen (Yam Yin Chai) starred FLY ME TO POLARIS (SING YUEN) was a big hit, many would still remake part of the films as a tribute to the original. Earlier the film reportedly would make a sequel with Jingle Ma Chor Sing as the director, Bao Beier and Gulnezer as the leads and Pak Chi would guest star. However, Ma Chor Sing responded that he had no plan to make the film and expose the fraud! FLY ME TO POLARIS opened in 1999. At the time Cheung Pak Chi even won the Hong Kong Film Award Best New Performer with the film. Her film song also became a must at karaoke boxes; the film rights were sold to Toho in Japan and made into the Yuko Takeuchi starred NIGHT OF THE SHOOTING STAR. Aside from the film being remade, in recent years many would imitate the film's romantic scenes. Pak Chi and Richie Jen (Yam Yin Chai) both joined in. In recent years they have been rather active on mainland social media and often would interact as the film's characters. The mainland variety show invited them to perform FLY ME TO POLARIS on the stage. Pak Chi showed off her Best Actress level acting and made Yao Chen and Tang Yan to tears. Earlier someone claimed online that the film would make a sequel titled ELEVEN DAYS AND ONE NIGHT (SUP YUT TIN LING YUT YEH), with Bao Beier and Gulnezer as its leads and Pak Chi and Siu Chai as guest stars. FLY ME TO POLARIS' director Ma Chor Sing would direct and the post had a poster and a synopsis. Many online were looking forward to it. However, when asked to confirmed, Ma Chor Sing replied, "I am not making this film." In recent years the mainland has had many "big film" financing fraud. Criminals used popular films and falsely claimed that they were raising fund for the sequel. Some would even create the "new film", like Chow Yun Fat, Louis Koo Tin Lok, Francis Ng Chun Yu and Julian Cheung Chi Lam once was said to be making the film MAI JUI that was raising funding online. However actually the criminals were only using artists' names to swindle money. Ma Chor Sing in recent years have been working in the mainland, currently he is preparing for a new film. Earlier Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Eddie Peng Yu-Yan took a photo in Japan. Because Leung Chiu Wai's TOKYO RAIDERS (DONG GAING GUNG LEUK) was one of his classics too, thus when someone commented that they would like the two of them to make a RAIDERS series film, Ma Chor Sing said, "Me too." Aside from the director, Pak Chi also has been working smoothly in the mainland in recent years. After a little break in Hong Kong, she again returned to work and modeled for a certain label in the mainland. Lately she has been busy with social media advertisement. She revealed that due to her son she has fallen for building blocks. She even bought a rose building block set to build for herself. * (2023/04/09) Sam Hui Koon Kit's 7 show Hong Kong Coliseum concert series opened two nights ago. The 74 year old was full of energy and he rocked the stage with his sons Ryan and Scott and god son Justin. Sam performed from 8:30 to 11:30 pm, without any sign of exhaustion he performed over 30 classic hits. Many were even songs that encouraged Hong Kong people, so viewers would be able to experience the positive energy from him in a joyous atmosphere. When he performed BAUHINIA, Sam gave a special encouragement to Hong Kong. "Bauhinia only blooms so brilliantly because of the efforts of the people of Hong Kong!" Sam put some thought into the stage and the costumes for this concert. He wore a red and white glittering sequence costume as he played the guitar and sang JUST A LITTLE, THINGS WE SAID TODAY, BUS STOP, then with his sons Ryan, Scott and god son Justin picked up guitars and played BUDDHA'S DELIGHT, MONEY WOULD KEEP COMING, DON'T TREAT ME LIKE A FOOL and brought the atmosphere to the climax. Later Sam remembered his idol Elvis Presley and performed the song he wrote for him FAREWELL SWALLOW ON THE RAFTER. Then he said it was handshake time and the front row viewers rushed toward the stage. Sam even gave way a leopard print towel with the words "If It is meant to be it is meant to be", which made the fans very happy. Fans also came over to give presents to Sam. The sentimental Sam in the tribute segment was sorrowful, he performed Danny Chan Pak Keung's LOVE TO OLD AGE as a tribute to him and his former band leader; when he sang his third older brother Ricky Hui Koon Ying's HEARTLESS NIGHT COLD WIND, he was so heartbroken that he touched the "eagle" that represented his brother on the tree. When he played the harmonica and sang Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing's WHO CAN RELATE, he said, "When he passed away everyone was very upset. He was a beautiful youth, everyone loved him. Handsome and a good singer, he was Cheung Kwok Wing. I dedicate this song to him." Sam stood next to the piano, where the prop of the red heels "Gor Gor" Cheung Kwok Wing wore at his concerts and origami crane lay. Near the end he could not help but got choked up. The audience applauded as encouragement. Sam also changed the last two verses to "night is quiet, can Gor Gor feel it" to remember his late friend. Sam then changed into a white tank top, after playing the Pipa and also wielded nunchukus at will. He even gave the nunchukus to the audience. When he sang his only costume film THE SWORDSMAN (SIU NGO GONG WU)'s theme song, the crowd clapped and sang along. Sam appeared in a glittering cowboy look to sing JAPANESE DOLL and gave away glasses to viewers. In the company of dancers in Japanese, Hawaiian and Samba costumes, Sam lightly danced and sang many hits. With his trademark laughter the evening was heating up. While Sam was changing, Hui Koon Man appeared and received applause. He joked that Sam had to change into a neon light costume so he had to vamp for several minutes with stand up comedy. He said that he believed the audience would think that he only knew how to sing TOWER IN THE CLOUDS, because it was the only song in his life. Its tragic lyrics said that the Eiffel Tower, Mount Fuji and the world could not compare to the beauty of Hong Kong, which actually had a big secret behind them that he wanted to expose but had to wait until his mother passed to get the courage to. He joked, "Actually before I went on the road Ma saw me off at the airport, saying that last week Sam said that he wanted to America and marry an American girl (his wife Rebecca Fleming). However he was 22, had no career, and would definitely starve his wife to death and stink up the house. So my mission when I went on the road was to bring Sam back. On the eve of Sam's wedding, we were at a small remote village. In a snow storm, U got 40 coins in change for US$ 10 and called Ma long distance from a public phone booth to negotiate. Sam refused to go and would risk death to marry this woman. Ma told me to knock Sam out and carry him back, but he said in America everyone has guns and would blindly shoot them!" Hui Koon Man continued to joke, "Ma told me to knock out Sam and take him to the airport, but I said in the middle of the night the airport was closed and there was no flight. Ma said we had to come back, even if we had to take a balloon without a plane. I said Americans could use rockets to bring down the balloon at anytime. When Ma said to me warn Sam again, the line was disconnected." Hui Koon Man described Sam at the time stood in the phone booth with snow all over his snow. They stared at each other with nothing to say. He then said to Sam, "Little brother, be good, go home with me. Your Ma says you are an idiot!" Sam answered, "Older Brother, genius and idiot, it wouldn't be so easy to be crazy!" He again urged Sam to listen to Ma, Sam replied, "Life is like gambling, wins and losses aren't scheduled, let me place a wager!" Hui Koon Man then quoted Ma, "You definitely would regret i!" Sam answered, "Life is hard to predict, if it's meant to be it's meant to be, if it's not don't force it. Just wish me well!" Thus Hui Koon Man broke out and did not dare to try to talk him down. "The next day after his wedding I returned to Hong Kong right away, feeling very inspired I wrote TOWER IN THE CLOUDS. Then I got married right away. Ma was so mad she almost jumped out of the building. However decades later, my Ma in Heaven probably would be very happy, because so far Sam and I haven't starved our wives to death and stank up the house." The entire crowd kept laughing and their applause was thunderous. Then Hui Koon Man's son appeared and played the piano, with Hui Koon Man and Sam singing TOWER IN THE CLOUDS and TRAVELER IN THE WIND. When he sang BAUHINIA, Sam gave special encouragement to the people of Hong Kong and said, "Bauhinia is only blooming so brilliantly because of the efforts of the people of Hong Kong!" During the encore, in a white tank top Sam played the drums and sang HAVING FUN IS THE MOST IMPORTANT, after which he gave away a handkerchief. Later his sons again appeared and performed THE CONTRACT, MISCHIEVOUS TWIN STARS and HALF CATTY EIGHT TAEL. Then he gave away maracas. The first show's guest was creative singer Terence Lam Ka Him, who played the piano as they sang DIARY IN THE HERT. Lam Ka Him said that his parents were there. The night was very special because he never thought that he would be able to share the stage and sing with Song God, the feeling was very special. He thanked Sam for blazing a very beautiful trail for Cantonese songs and good music. Speaking of Sam mentioning in an interview the he and Ka Him were very similar, he felt that talent wise he was very far from the elder, but joked that both he and Sam are troublesome Virgos. He too was born on September 3rd, same as Michael Hui Koon Man and Sam's son. He too has three older brothers and is the fourth child of his family as well. Lam Ka him requested WHERE TO FIND PENGLAI for his father and then performed JOB HUNT with Sam. Fans then made requests and Sam played the guitar as he sang while he crowd clapped along. After Sam sang FROM THE WANDERER'S HEART he said, "I would continue to keep smiling, life would then be happy!" He ended the show with KEEP SMILING and filled the audience with positive energy. * (2023/04/08) International superstar Jackie Chan yesterday turned 69. Popular with industry insiders, Jackie Chan recently received a lot of birthday well wishes, including a special video from Andy Lau Tak Wa singing the birthday song to him and sending him the most sincere blessing; Jay Chou also sent a video of his magic trick to wish Big Brother Jackie Chan a happy 69th birthday. The rap mentioned him renting Big Brother's movies to watch with his parents, his movies accompanied and inspired him when he was growing up. Big Brother was the pride of the Chinese people. Jackie Chan has never forgotten his original intention as an actor after 60 years in the business. On the set he still insisted on real fighting and real stunt. Recently he said that this movie was dedicated to all the action professionals around the world, as he wished that everyone would be proud to be stunt professionals. He looked back at his dangerous production experience in the past and lamented the times have changed. Due to the technological advancement and the consideration for the team's safety, "It could no longer be done today." Speaking of the injuries and pain from his past productions, Jackie Chan admitted that he knew one day he would be in a wheelchair or holding a cane. Currently he has been taking numbing injections in hopes of easing the pain, but his thighs and shoulders would still hurt. He has already taken the second shot, so he would not be able to take a third. If he did his bone would become brittle, the next treatment would be surgery. He also stated that he was the most afraid of taking shots, but he felt that this was the fate of a stuntman! * (2023/04/08) The film RED LINE yesterday held a press tea in Taiwan, during which Best Actor Andy Lau Tak Wa was announced as a special performer of the film's ultimate mystery character. RED LINE would be the film debut that new director Jacky Ko has prepared a long time for. His older brother Alan Ko would not only perform but also co-write the screenplay. RED LINE has been scheduled for a 2023 release, and 2023 happened to be the 20th anniversary of "Car God" Blackie Ko's passing. Now that his younger son Jacky Ko and older son Alan Ko have teamed up to direct and write this car racing movie, they have taken up his mantle and added another layer of meaning to RED LINE. Producer Chiu Li-Kwan said, "'Brother Blackie" Ko was a good friend o everyone. I am very grateful to Lau Tak Wa for lending a hand, agreeing to give the special performance right away." Chiu Li-Kwan said that Brother Blackie's jump over the Yellow River has yet to be repeated. The Ko Brothers chose a "car racing" movie to pay tribute to their father, and she felt very pleased. "In the film Lau Tak Wa would play the 'car god of a generation', a kind of collaboration across time and space with Brother Blackie in real life. The meaning would be extraordinary." Chiu Li-Kwan said that Lau Tak Wa and Brother Blackie had a connection from very early on. They worked together on movies, and even performed the hit DUMB KID together. Thus when he learned that Jacky Ko was planning to make RED LINE, Lau Tak Wa agreed right away. Wa Jai's character lost his family in an accident, the pain of guilt, regret and loss was deeply ingrained into his originally proud soul. In the film he could be neither good nor evil, an enemy of E.SO's character but also a mentor and a friend. Chiu Li-kwan said, "In the film other characters are after victory with speed, Lau Tak Wa's character however is after defeat with speed. The character is very hard to play. Aside from Lau Tak Wa, truly there is no other choice." "Aside from supporting the sons of a late friend, I think Lau Tak Wa has agreed to the special performance because he understands that this movie has the "soul of speed" in the Ko family bloodline. Ultimately he and Brother Blackie knew each other very well." * (2023/04/08) Hong Kong Film Awards Best Actress Cya Liu worked on an action film for the first time, felt very lucky to have worked with Nicholas Tse Ting Fung and rather admired his agility. Playing many tragic characters in recent years, she admitted that she hoped to make a romance. She would like to work with Tony Leung Chiu Wai the most, praising him as full of charisma. Cya Liu starred in the Emperor Motion Picture CUSTOMS FRONTLINE (HOI GUAN JIN SIN), which would be her first action film. To be able to work with action director Nicholas Tse Ting Fung and "Song God" Jacky Cheung Hok Yau, she said that she was both happy and scared. She said that when she was little she already saw Ting Fung's NEW POLICE STORY, watching him jumping from great heights. She said that she grew up watching his action films, thus she felt lucky to be working with Ting Fung on her first action film. "His action scenes are very serious. This time he is the action director, during the preparation I learned a lot from him. He is very agile, on the set I really admire him." Accepting a series of gun training before hand, she was asked whether Ting Fung, who was known to take risks, was very strict with his demands? She said, "He asks more of himself, he is more protective with us. He knows what we can do, and wouldn't let us to take risks." In the film she was faced with many thrilling scenes. She said, "I never thought that everything on the set would be real. The bombs, the explosives and the fire are very dangerous, with any carelessness you might get hurt." The most memorable for her was the scene in which she and Ting Fung had to dodge the fire while charging ahead. During the shoot she was not too worried, but when she watched the playback she learned that if the fire was not controlled well it might burn their faces. Although she did not have many scenes with Hok Yau, she praised Song God's acting was even better than his singing. Once in a singing contest, she also said that she might sing again. "I asked the company, I am just waiting for news.....haha." Winning Best Actress with LIMBO (JI CHI), her past characters have suffered. Would she hope to make a light romance? She said, "It's fine, suffering instead is a type of enjoyment, after suffering the character is achieved. I really want to make a romantic film too, but the company says I don't have any couple feel with other people, haha." If she would work on a romance, she would like to work with Leung Chiu Wai with his pair of "electric eyes" the most. She said, "Because a lot are inside his eyes, they are very charming." As the Best Actress, she pointed out that she would separate life and work very far apart. Outside of film she would work hard on living her very simple life. She felt that actors with life could not be good actors. The jobs she would take now are ones that she has not tried before, in the future she would like to play more realistic subjects, minor characters. With suitable roles she would also like to try foreign productions. * (2023/04/08) The 74 year old Song God Sam Hui Koon Kit's seven show Hong Kong Coliseum concert series opened last night. Sam appeared with a leopard print hat, a glittering black suit and a violin as he opened the show with IMPRESSION. After 3 songs he said, "After waiting for 3 years I am very happy. Tonight I would have a long time to sing, at least 4 hours. Singing more would make me live longer, extend my longevity. Tonight I want to sing with everyone, the 3 year pandemic felt like surviving a disaster. I feel how small the world is." He then sang IT'S A SMALL WORLD and handed the microphone to fans and sang AH LONG LOVE SONG with them. For pandemic prevention the microphones were changed after each viewer finished singing. * (2023/04/08) The 41st Hong Kong Film Awards would take place on the 16th at the Hong Kong Cultural Center in Tsim Sha Tsui. This year MIRROR's Edan Lui Chuek On and Jer Lau Ying Ting would compete in the Best New Performer category. It stressed that the tickets were non-transferrable and would not be sold publicly. Always stringent with her script selection, Sister Chang this time was willing to take less salary to support the new director. However she did not agree with the frequently seen "tap on the shoulder" culture in the film industry. She even admitted that she has always held a grudge against money, over the years she has already turned down many Lunar New Year film money making opportunities. She wanted to promote even more dramatic films so viewers would not have the idea of resisting dramatic films. When Sylvia Chang took A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT role, she admitted that first she wanted to support the First Feature Film Initiative's new director Anastasia Tsang Hin Ning. In addition the film with the passing of the female protagonist's husband brought out that neon lights were also gradually vanishing from Hong Kong, making people miss their beauty. The subject also attracted her. Sister Chang said that in the past she has worked with new directors in different eras, since Ann Hui On Wa's first movie THE SECRET (FUNG GIP) she has worked with countless new directors. "I instead like this. When I act for too long, I need fresh elements so I wouldn't repeat what I would originally do. Like this time when I again played Mama and wife, the film had ideas that the new director suggested. For old actors like me they instead are fresh!" The role she played this time lost her husband but did not called for Heaven and Earth, but a little reluctance. Sister Chang said, "I wanted to express the emotions inside, even if you cry to death the audience might not be able to sense them. Thus first you have to understand what level your own emotions would reach, this way during the performance you would be able to truly express them." Speaking of Simon Yam Tat Wa, her husband who passed away in the film, Sister Chang said that the last time they worked together was already several decades ago HE LIVES BY NIGHT (YEH GAING WON). At the time he was still a newcomer who just came the jump from television. This time everyone have already experienced a lot on their own, and the feeling was real joy. However he joined in during the post production and did not have time to discuss the script before taking his mark. Yet they already had a certain trust. Speaking of Yam Tat Wa speaking that he performed for free because of Sister Chang, Sister Chang said, "He knows that to be able to make this movie would be very difficult. One day the Development Council (Hong Kong Film Development Council) people came to visit the set. I asked them whether they would be able to give more money because the film had many past scenery that it wanted to bring back. Everything would require money. I deeply believed that everyone should be paid what they deserved at work. It shouldn't be free. I disagree that every time everyone would have to accommodate. 'Tap on the shoulder' could only be once in awhile. I feel for the film industry to be healthy, it has to have a healthy standard. Starting a production would take at least HK$ 8 million, with such high costs how can actors survive?" However many actors have been "tapped on the shoulder" (asked for a favor). Sister Chang said, "I also hope that dramatic film would continue to exist. In order to cultivate a good actor, we have to keep giving him roles to play. Commercial films have difficulties with giving actors drama to perform." Sister Chang said that even with behind the scene posts, dramatic films would also serve the cultivation purpose. Thus for the existence of dramatic films, everyone would be willing to take a little less. However not every movie should be doing that. "I know now our government's arts and cultural department has many young members, I hope they truly can help the arts and the film industry, find even more markets. Only when the market is expanded, would the industry be able to exist!" How many "taps on the shoulder" has Sister Chang had? Sister Chang admitted, "Truly too many times since I was young to now. To me salary has never been what I care the most about. I am not here for the money, I only want to get what I should. I wouldn't look at what other people are getting. When you constantly compare yourself with others, all you become is 'greedy'. If I get what I should get I would be very happy, but 'tap on the shoulder' once is OK. Everyone would be comfortable. You just can't do it every time!" Now for Sister Chang to take a role, first she has to have a good script. In the past many big time directors have invited her to make Lunar New Year films and she has turned them all down. "I seem to have a grudge against money, but now at my age, I still have people asking me to play important roles. You can see I am still working hard!" In comparison, when Sister Chang would direct she would try not to "tap the shoulder" of actors because she would not be the person responsible for putting up the money. However earlier Sister Chang directed a part of HERO (SAI GAN YAU TA), reportedly Sammi Cheng Sau Man probably was "tapped on the shoulder". "However I wasn't the one who was tapping, the movie was shot during the pandemic so it wasn't easy at all. In addition it was only 1/3 of the film. I think Sammi probably wanted to work with me, but she too only took the role because of the good script and character!" As for the changes in the way current viewers watch movies, Sylvia Chang admitted that she too watched Netflix and online information, she felt that film and television were ultimately different. Television headed into home while films went out, so the film world would be much larger, require even more new ideas and new thinking. Thus her screenplay would take her so long to write. Sister Chang pointed out that actually in recent years Hong Kong has made many dramatic films, many of which were first feature films. She was able to see many new directors had a lot of heart, and shot their own growth process. This situation was a little similar to earlier Taiwan when a pile of new directors talked about their growth. However if the audience would watch stories about growing up every time they would get a little bored, and there would be too much emotion." She hoped to be able to encourage even more directors to make their second film. "Because many people are helping and supporting new directors, why don't everyone continue to support their second film? Actually their actual substance could only been seen by their second film, their greatest challenge. Because when they would work again they would not shoot what they would be the most familiar with, they would have to do their handsome instead of just relying on their natural talent!" Sister Chang also said earlier she received some happy news. She learned that the AFTERSUN's English director Charlotte Wells had a copy of Sister Chang's film MURMUER OF THE HEART (LIM LIM) at home. In an interview she said that the movie moved her to tears, and influenced the movies she has made since. Sister Chang was pleasantly surprised that her film was appreciated. She never thought that her movie would be able to cross oceans, to such a faraway place and people would still be able to see it. Sister Chang said, "Sometimes I am still examining, our audience has a mental block against many dramatic films. Instead we have been more conservative." As for new comer Chou Hon Ning, he had many scenes with Best Actress Sister Chang in LIGHT. He did not dare to slack off, even when he was not in a scene he was still learning from Sister Chang. He also fought for the opportunities to listen the elder's talk of life experience. He even found Sister Chang's past work, at which point Sister Chang proceeded to ask, "In the words you didn't watch my movies before, now you are catching up on your homework!" Chou Hon Ning admitted that at first when he met the elder he was a little nervous and scared, but after awhile together he felt that Sister Chang was very friendly. She never even yelled at him once. Sister Chang said that as a director she has never yelled at anyone, unless the actor did not do the homework. However Chou Hon Ning was very nice, during the performance he has only worked too hard and become unnatural. She told him to relax a little. Chou Hon Ning personally made a heart shaped neon light with the English letter S within. He explained to Sister Chang, "The heart shape represents my love for you, the 'S' is the first letter for your English name and also represent you being a 'Super Woman'!" Sister Chang could not be happier and gladly accepted everything! * (2023/04/06) New actor Henick Chou Hon Ning and producer Saville Chan Sum Yiu yesterday promoted their film A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT (DUN FOR LAN SHAN). The film's lead actress was Sylvia Chng. Chan Sum Yiu pointed out that inviting Sylvia Chang to perform was not easy at all. he praised her as the "ceiling of show business". As for successfully getting Sylvia Chang, Chan Sum Yiu said that mainly he relied on the script and the story to move her. "Because Sister Chang really likes old Hong Kong, she feels that both neon lights and film are works of art. To be able to invite her is quite a honor." He also joked that although Sister Chang did not put on air, she had a presence. While working with her, he was always anxious. Chou Hon Ning was already able to work with Sister Chang in his first film. He also admitted that at first he was nervous and scared when facing Sister Chang, but after working together he felt that Sister Chang was great. She did not treat him as a new actor. Everyone would always chat and laugh and the collaboration was very pleasant. The most memorable was a scene in which he wore a white tank top. "I really want to see it, before the shoot I did push ups. I even asked Sister Chang was I big? She ended up rolling her eyes. Later I found out that Sister Chang worked with (Eddie) Peng Yu-Yan in the previous film. The contrast was too much." Chou Hon Ning revealed that he worked out for the performance, but he already lost everything. Chan Sum Yiu said that as usual, the casting was through auditions. this time was not exception. He also revealed that Chou Hon Ning brought props with him to the audition, which was also their first meeting. The film earlier held its premiere. Chou Hon Ning described it like a graduation ceremony, because the film after two or three years was finally released. Was he confident about the Hong Kong Film Award Best New Performer competition? He said, "Having my name up there I am already very happy . I feel others also performed very well." He also said that he grew up watching the Hong Kong Film Awards. He never thought that he would be able to stand on the stage. He even has thought about his thank you speech. Chan Sum Yiu admitted that selfishly he wanted Chou Hon Ning to win. He also revealed that Chou while on the red carpet for the film was so nervous that he stepped on the director's dress. [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Ba Ba d. NOMAD (4K RESTORED DIRECTOR'S CUT) Can : Lit For Ching Chun d. Patrick Tam Ka Ming Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing, Cecilia Yip Tung, Kent Tong Chun Yip, Pat Ha Man Jik Rating : IIB Length : 94 mins. Opening April 6 2023 [ BROADWAY CIRCUIT ] "Nomad" describes the sexuality and love of today's young generation. The scene of Ken Tong and Pat Ha making love on the tram arises controversy when it is showed. In contrast, the love between Leslie Cheung and Cecilia Yip is a kind of tender and pure. Cecilia falls in love with Leslie in the first sight, they sympathy each other and then sleep in a reasonable way. This kind of love is more graceful and sweet. Besides sexuality and sex, this film also talks about the infiltration of Japanese culture into Hong Kong. Leslie is westernized but old fashion inside, Cecilia is influenced by Japanese culture and ambitious. This shows the characteristics of Hong Kong's unique culture. This film reflects the youngsters' attitude towards love and sex, which is a breakthrough as it should be a taboo in Hong Kong society at its time. The relationships among the boys and girls are also profoundly described and make it as the most realistic romance movie. YOKAIPEDI d. A thematic continuation of his classic films about the neverending struggle between fate and free will, Soi Cheang delivers a gripping thriller with intensity and panache, powered by producer Johnnie To and screenwriter Yau Nai-hoi. Gordon Lam and Lokman Yeung are extraordinary as two men standing at the edge of sanity, as they fight an invisible enemy. Berlinale Special. [ BERLIN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ] The sky above Hong Kong is not just heavy with clouds and rain, it also contains astral signs and dark omens in this esoteric neo-noir. In a radical and counter-intuitive move, rather than having the characters' trajectories converge towards the end, the plot instead knits their fates together from the start. Crossing paths at the scene of a heinous crime in a brothel are the serial killer perpetrator and the upstanding detective chasing him, but also a delivery boy obsessed with blood and knives and an occultist feng shui master who had predicted the victim's gory fate without being able to prevent it. The last two quickly form an unlikely pair, and this transforms the film into a surreal, hyperkinetic, expressionist buddy thriller. The horoscopes confirm that the boy will soon succumb to his bloodthirsty temptations, but to redeem past failures and save him from his fate, the fortune teller is willing to do anything. As the investigations gather pace, the pair sinks into delirium in a whirlwind of superstitions, rituals and distortions, against a backdrop of an alchemical metropolis. It all begins when Ming, together with his wife, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law, finds an anonymous naked body lying at their doorstep. Fearing that the presence of a corpse will turn their unit into a "murder home" and its property value will nosedive and impoverish them, their bickering family unite to pass the buck to their neighbours by moving the corpse to other units on the same floor. Their fiendish plot ropes in a motley bunch of people, including retired elderly couple, Mr. & Mrs. CHAN; a single lady and her maid; the CHEUNG's, an irascible father and his cantankerous son; and an overzealous security guard. Last but not least, is a mysterious chain smoking woman named Sue who might hold the key to helping get the body out of the building... A dark comedy of manners and Hong Kong home-ownership woes ensues in "Over My Dead Body" as each of these vividly portrayed characters turns on each other in an effort to avoid taking responsibility for both the body and their own personal problems.
