MISCELLANEOUS * (2023/02/08) Two Best Actors Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Aaron Kwok Fu Sing's first film collaboration WHERE THE WIND BLOWS (FUNG JOI HEI SI) last night held a premiere, the two lead actors wore eye catching colors of green and sky blue. Along with director Philip Yung Tsz Kwong, they and actors Ron Ng Cheuk Hei, Patrick Tam Yiu Man, Michael Chow Man Kin, Gardner Tse Kwan Ho, Jeana Ho Pui Yu appeared and attracted over 50 media outlets. Wai Jai and Sing Sing even shared their first collaboration and production experience. The two Best Actors were also stumped but being "played" and "slapped"! The film WHERE THE WIND BLOWS' subject were the Four Great Detectives of the 50s and the 60s. Wai Jai and Sing Sing played Detectives Nam Kong and Lui Lok. Wai Jai said that the most memorable was before the shoot the director already asked him to play three songs on the piano. Because he had no instrument experience, he had to keep practicing hard. The process was rather tough, but as an actor in order to get into the character he felt it was rather interesting. Sing Sing pointed out that in the film he had to tap dance to Wai Jai's piano playing. Before hand he hired an instructor to practice with. He not only practiced many days, on the day of the official shoot he went all night and injured his heel. He had to wait until he got home before being able to apply ice. Although it was tough he thought it was worth it; as for the most memorable scene, he had to slap Wai Jai hard. Sing Sing said, "Faced with our beloved Wai Jai, I really couldn't do it. During the shoot I could only hypnotize myself and slap Wai Jai time after time!" Wai Jai laughed, "If you have to hit you hit, you have to follow the story. You can't worry too much!" When the host mentioned that if they would have another chance to work together, Wai Jai said that he hoped to play a complex and dark role like a serial killer; Sing Sing said that he hoped to play a role that he has never played before. He did not want to repeat any character. As for the other "two detectives" Tam Yiu Man and Chow Man Kin they described this team as "happy" and "dream". Yung Tsz Kwong also said that he probably was a philanthropist who performed a lot of charity work in the previous life to be lucky enough to work with two Best Actors. Wai Jai and Sing Sing talked about WHERE wrapped up production five years ago and would finally be release, they were very happy and looked forward to it very much. The director and the team very professionally and seriously thought up a quality movie, and thus spent a lot of effort in hopes of the audience would like it, give it positive review and look forward to it as much as they do. Although five years have passed, Wai Jai pointed out that he still had an impression of the story, especially the piano playing scene. He still has not forgotten it yet because he spent a lot of time on practices. In order to coordinate with the background era he had to use a silent antique piano, he not only had to really play but also one of the songs was a very fast rhythm Jazz song. It really was very hard as he joked it was a big prank. However it was also a happy experience. The entire production process felt great, in addition he personally experienced the film's background era. The story was also very interesting. Sing Sing said that he was confident that the audience after watching this movie would be surprised, because no one would have thought that the subject of the Four Great Detectives could be made into such a story. However the most memorable was still slapping Wai Jai. Wai Jai comforted Sing Sing and said that for an actor acting was enjoyment, even if he had to take a hit. However this scene was a little stressful, because the cinematographer had to shoot by hand it had to be done in one straight take. There was no margin for error. Looking back, he had no idea whether he delivered the lines correctly; it was Sing Sing's turn to give Wai Jai a shot of confidence, as all three times were without any mistake. They were just like performing a play on the stage, only because he had to hit Wai Jai he had an enormous and invisible pressure. Speaking of the numerous Hong Kong film successes last year, since WHERE had two Best Actors would they have any expectation? They both hoped that the box office performance would be ideal. Wai Jai said that of course he hoped to have the encouragement of many people, but he did not want to give the director too much pressure; Sing Sing felt that the box office would be beyond his control, but as an actor he has already given his greatest effort. Ng Cheuk Hei said that earlier at the film festival he has already seen WHERE. He was also very happy that he was able to work with two great idol Best Actors. As for the most memorable scene he said it was in the end when Sing Sing put the handcuffs on him but they had a feeling of mutual respect, and the large scale gun fights. * (2023/02/07) The Lunar New Year film A GUILTY CONSCIENCE (DUK SIT DAI JONG) since opening at the Lunar New Year has set records in Hong Kong. Since its release to now it has already passed HK$ 80 million. The film team in appreciation of the audience support last night held a 100 table banquet at a Mongkok restaurant for a celebration of 1,000 people. At the celebration banquet A GUILTY CONSCIENCE team including director Jack Ng Wai Lun, stars Dayo Wong Tze Wa, Gardner Tse Kwan Ho, Louise Wong Dan Nei, Dee Ho Kai Wa, Renci Yeung Si Wing, Adam Pak Tin Nam, Bowie Lam Bo Yi, Vincent Kok Tak Chiu and Sheldon Lo (Law Hau Yung) took advantage of the loosened pandemic prevention measures and gathered with lucky viewers. A thousand people celebrated together, which truly was unprecedented. Since this movie opened during the Lunar New Year, it has set Hong Kong box office records, broke the Hong Kong Lunar New Year film single day opening and total box office record, as well as the opening and singing day box office record holder of the past 5 years. It reached second place in Hong Kong history and headed toward the highest grossing Hong Kong film box office record, as it had hope to break WARRIORS OF FUTURE (MING YUT JIN GEI)'s record. Wong Tze Wa even with A GUILTY CONSCIENCE and TABLE FOR SIX (FAN HEI GUNG SUM) had over HK$ 150 million box office record in half a box. In addition, the overseas box office climbed as well, in the U.S. and Canada it also became the Hong Kong film box office champion of the past 5 years, the admission champion and the highest screen number. In Malaysia it also became the Lunar New Year film champion. The actors and director Ng Wai Lun raised a toast to the thousand guests and spoke. They also held a lucky drawing to give away gifts. Tze Wa presented a personally autographed art card, which represented if you watch the movie more you would naturally have God's blessing. Kwan Ho gave away a tea set. Wong Dan Nei gave away angel crystal accessory. Ah Dee gave away sunglasses, Yeung Si Wing a water bottle, Pak Tin Nam a skincare gift box, Lam Bo Yi a coffee maker, Kok Tak Chiu as foot bath, Lo Hau Yung a translator pen and director Ng Wai Lung gave away movie gift certificates in hopes of everyone would continue to go to the movies. Speaking of the film breaking HK$ 80 million mark and would have a chance to break Louis Koo Tin Lok's WARRIORS OF FUTURE (MING YUT JIN GEI) record, Tze Wa happily said, "Earlier we actors bet all night. I guessed HK$ 50 million, since I already lost so I would have to pick up the dinner tab. Now it continues to climb, everyday I am a little dazed." At the current box office trend it might break HK$ 100 million. Tze Wa said, "I can only chuckle in response, I don't dare to say it's impossible. When the time comes I would grow a pair of wings and would shake my feathers!" Reaching HK$ 150 million at the box office in half a year, Tze Wa admitted the feeling was very strange. Earlier when he brought it up at dinner with Mommy she wouldn't believe that he would be more popular than Betty Loh Tih and Linda Lin Dai. Ah Dee once declared that when the box office would reach HK$ 30 million he would take off his pants. Last night when he arrived, all his fans already screamed "Pants off". In the end he paid the bill on the stage. He danced as he pulled down his pants to his knees then pulled it back up. He was praised as being a real man. He also joked that if the box office would pass HK$ 100 million he would take off other actors' pants. Louise Wong Dan Nei and Renci Yeung Si Wing hopeed that the box office would continue its charge. They both have said that the better the box office performance would be the more they would show, but they would add Fish Liew Chi Yu and show inch by inch. Now with the good performance, they wished the most for Tze Wa to be able to give them a big half a minute long hug as if they received God's protection and blessing. In addition they also hoped to be able to perform again with the original team. * (2023/02/07) The Asian Film Awards yesterday announced that the 16th Asian Film Awards' Excellence in Asian Cinema Award will be presented to renowned Japanese actor ABE Hiroshi. ABE Hiroshi will attend the 16th Asian Film Awards Presentation Ceremony in Hong Kong in March to receive the award. "I am very honored to receive the Excellence in Asian Cinema Award," said Abe. "I am truly surprised to receive such a big award like the AFA. When I heard about the honor, I was so happy and grateful to have my crew by my side, who have been with me all these years, so I could share it with everyone." * (2023/02/06) Started as a screenwriter, Jack Ng Wai Lun in his 23 years in the business has written many critically and commercially successful screenplays, including THE BEAST STALKER (JING YUN), THE STOOL PIGEON (SIN YUN), SPL (SAT POR LONG), COLD WAR 2 (HONG JIN 2) and ANITA. His directing debut, the Lunar New Year film A GUILTY CONSCIENCE (DUK SIT DAI JONG) was a overnight sensation. After 16 days in release it has made over HK$ 75 million. As it maintained its momentum, the film would have hope in passing the Louis Koo Tin Lok produced and starred WARRIORS OF FUTURE (MING YUT JIN GEI)'s HK$ 83 million to become the highest grossing Hong Kong Chinese film. Ng Wai Lun felt that whether the box office would reach HK$ 100 million, the key would be whether even more viewers who normally would not go to the movies would attend. If only viewers and fan groups who supported A GUILTY CONSCIENCE repeatedly to pump up the box office, even going over HK$ 100 million would not mean much. Ng Wai Lun said about A GUILTY CONSCIENCE's box office continuing to climb and passing HK$ 100 million would not be a dream, "Actually whether it would be able to pass HK$ 100 million, the key lies in whether even more viewers who normally wouldn't go to the movies would put aside their differences and go. If we just rely on viewers or fan groups who have watched A GUILTY CONSCIENCE repeatedly buy tickets to pump up the box office, even if we would pass HK$ 100 million it wouldn't mean much. After seeing the movie, if you feel it is good, sincerely recommend it to friends who haven't seen it to go. Only this way would be the greatest power of promoting Hong Kong films. Nowadays, if you love it you do, if you don't you don't. If you like it then recommend it, if you don't then don't stop others from liking it. Those of us who make movies have to be responsible to the audience, not come out and beg for tickets. If we can break the record, we would break the record. If not then we would wait for next time. It's just that simple." Would he consider releasing a director's cut or an extended version? He said that he would not. "Editor Mr. Chan Kei Hap and I sat together and edited the current street version. Actually it could be counted as a director's cut. The cut scenes would have the best chance to see the light of day again as DVD 'Deleted Scenes'. As for whether these Deleted Scenes would appear, I would have to have another talk with the company." The Wong Tze Wa starred TABLE FOR SIX (FAN HEI GUNG SUM) and A GUILTY CONSCIENCE are currently in second and third place at the highest grossing Hong Kong Chinese film box office. Earlier when he talked about working with Ng Wai Lun, he revealed that although Ng was mild tempered he has thrown a tantrum on the set and yelled at people. Ng Wai Lun explained that because he felt bad for Wong Tze Wa giving a great courtroom scene performance, but due a minor gesture of a background actor the take was ruined. He joked, "Throwing a tantrum is only a filmmaking tool, appropriate tantrum throwing would make everyone alert. However when used too much it would become ineffective, like I was singing. Thus I didn't like to use this method too much, because throwing a tantrum makes people tired." He revealed that he chose Wong Tze Wa to play the role of Lam Leung Shui, because his stand up comedy image was mean enough. However Wong Tze Wa in person actually was very easy going. The "poison tongue" was purely for getting people in the mood. Ng Wai Lun thanked Wong Tze Wa for giving him a lot of useful suggestions, like speaking Hokkienese in one scene. Also for his soccer field chat with Bowie Lam Bo Yi, Wong Tze Wa felt that it could go even farther so he lent a hand. Ng Wai Lun said, "Wong Tze Wa said that I was lucky, as he drove the story from behind. If he unfortunately caught the novel coronavirus and was in less than great shape, the entire film would have gone down with him. I felt that Heaven was helping the whole thing, reinforced myself to say: when I do something that I can answer for with aa conscience, Heaven would help me with resolving the problems." Ng Wai Lun hoped to make a mob film with the original team. "A BETTER TOMORROW (YING HUNG BOON SIK) affected me. When I watched this movie at age 11 it already made me cry." However he never thought about working with his good friend Chan Wing Sun again, because when they worked together on MONSTER HUNT 2 (JOOK YIU GEI 2) they argued many times. He was afraid of hurting their relationship. In addition their genres were different. Chan loves to make light comedy while he excels in heavy subject action films. "When I saw his TABLE FOR SIX succeed, I was happy for him." Ng Wai Lun and Longman Leung wrote the film ANITA, which made almost HK$ 63 million at the box office. He caught the eye of the film company's boss Bill Kong Chi Keung and finally got to taste his director dream. Ng Wai Lun said, "Kong Chi Keung knew that I excel in writing action film, but in 2020 the pandemic erupted. The future wasn't clear yet. The boss said that an action film would be harder to make, hinting that I should write a drama. What drama would be shot with a sense of action? I thought immediately of a courtroom movie. The rhythm of a war of words was like punches and kicks, as some would say shooting a drama like an action film. In addition I just finished watching foreign film IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER and thought a miscarriage of justice would be a very attractive subject. At the time he already thought, if in the future I would have the chance to direct, I definitely would want to make a courtroom movie." The 47 year old Ng Wai Lun looked back at his humble days as a screenwriter and once thought about switching jobs. "Early on screenwriting didn't make much and was unstable. It was hard to make a living. At the most difficult I only had several hundred in my bank account. I also have thought about giving up and switching jobs, but I didn't have another industry I wanted to work in. So I could continue to write my expertise of crime films and action films. Yet due to cyclical unemployment and I didn't take enough initiative, my opportunities drastically reduced. I wasn't as lucky as the modern new generation, with so many opportunities like the First Feature Film Initiative, financing and greenlight projects. I also thought about whether to take this journey of screenwriting. In the end I still grind my teeth and worked freelance for a living. My Academy of Performing Arts classmate (Sunny) Chan Wing Sun and I wrote a soccer animation, but we knew nothing about soccer. We needed soccer fan friends' help to provide the information." A film major at the Academy of Performing Arts, Ng Wai Lun before graduation already received instructor recommendations to be Gordon Chan Ka Seung's "page": responsible for handling the film 2000 AD's screenplay text. During that time he met director Dante Lam Chiu Yin, who gave him the opportunity to be a production assistant on JIANG HU: THE TRIAD ZONE (GONG WU GO GUP). Started from the bottom, he was responsible for some of the screenplay of HIT TEAM (CHUNG ONG GAING CHAK). "Lam Chiu Yin once asked me whether I wanted to be a screenwriter or a director, I chose to start with screenwriter because when I would become a director later I still would need to know how to write a script. At that time I finally understood that to be in this business, I had to learn to save money because I constantly faced unemployment. Also because of accumulating years of experience, this time for my directing debut I found many crew members I trust to help." He felt that the biggest difficulty of being a director was answering questions from different positions. As the screenwriter as well, he could not give himself too much free rein. "I had to write something that I could shoot, I couldn't be too fantastical." * (2023/02/06) The first Hong Kong film epic of the year, WHERE THE WIND BLOWS (FUNG JOI HEI SI) yesterday was officially released in the Mainland. The film was Philp Yung Tsz Kwong directed and written, Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Du Juan starred. The film followed Lui Lok and Nam Kong's points of views for the viewers to experience through the big screen the heroic detective duo from working together to breaking up, and their legendary lives that were filled with love and hate. This was also the two Best Actors Kwok Fu Sing and Leung Chiu Wai's first big screen collaboration. They also shared their production experience. Leung Chiu Wai joked that the daily piano practice made him want to jump out a building, while Kwok Fu Sing found that the opium taking scene was the hardest because he had no real experience. The two lead actors Leung Chiu Wai and Kwok Fu Sing made the event through video chat, and WHERE THE WIND BLOWS was their first big screen collaboration. Speaking of their experience, both Best Actors said, "very enjoyable, and we also looked forward to it very much." Kwok Fu Sing said that Leung Chiu Wai is a very excellent actor. "We went through that era, together enjoyed this process. I felt that working with Wai Jai and sharing this journey together was very memorable." Speaking of his understanding of his character, Sing Sing said that Lui Lok was very ambitious, so much so that he has already forgotten what condition he was in. Later after many relationship changes he finally woke up, actually some things were even more important than money. Wai Jai sid that Lui Lok had something that Nam Kong did not, so he started to long for his character, admire him, and do what he wanted to do through him. When asked about production difficulties Wai Jai immediately said "daily piano practice", during which he even constantly complained to the director. He joked that he "wanted to jump out of a building", not expecting the director to say, "Your home isn't high enough. Even if you jump it would be useless. You might as well keep practicing." The comment made the set laugh. For Sing Sing, the most difficult part was the process in which Lui Lok took opium and smoked. "I have never had such an experience, so I could only keep studying how it might be like so the audience would feel it." He even revealed that the scene in which he tap danced along with Wai Jai's piano playing took all night to shoot. "I have studied dance since I was little, but tap dancing to me was really very alternative." The film also had a scene in which "Kwok Fu Sing slapped Leung Chiu Wai". Sing Sing said that at the time it was one long take. If anyone made any mistake they would have to start over, which meant that Wai Jai would need to be slapped again. On the receiving end, Wai Jai said, "At the time I encouraged Kwok Fu Sing, just hit me! Don't worry about it! I had to give everyone a little trust, which was the way it should be. No mercy." As the film neared its end, the 1st Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor Michael Hui Koon Man in the film contributed an exciting "war of words" performance. Facing the English Hong Kong Governor's compromise with corruption, he as the Independent Commission Against Corruption investigator supervisor Lee Tsz Chiu used an emotional speech in the face of various departments covering for each other. He fought with logic and swore to defense the ideal of justice and fairness in his heart. Yung Tsz Kwong two nights ago at the premiere joked that the film was originally titled Global Wanted Bulletin (Chuen Kau Tung Chup Ling), in the end all the money was spent of art and scenery that had many Hong Kong elements and old Hong Kong stories. Thus came the title that was full of nostalgia WHERE THE WIND BLOWS (FUNG JOI HEI SI). The film did not linger in the existing formula of large scale crime scenes and heavy action scenes that Hong Kong films preferred, but through the language of shots that were full of aesthetic beauty and storytelling methods the film achieved its unique literary journey. As the film's producer Lee Kam Man said, "Everyone feel many Hong Kong films probably are crime, explosion, car chase, this one is a movie of Director Tsz Yung that has quite a romantic nostalgia." Director Yung Tsz Kwong placed the point of view on mid last century Hong Kong. Started from lower class and just joined the police force Lui Lok and the son of the rich family Nam Kong, after the war torn 40s met in the chaotic 50s. Then they teamed up and moved upward, after dividing up the power they then erected "new rules of corruption". Along with two detectives Yim Hung and Han Sum they reigned the 60s. Hence the "Four Great Detectives" title could be heard throughout the streets; as corrupted power went rampant across the entire 60s, it became a tumor on the Hong Kong community. Finally in the 70s, the Independent Commission Against Corruption arose and the "glory" that belonged to the Four Great Detectives finally was gone with the wind. The film crossed a large range of eras, so the viewers would be able to witness this historical storm and in the flood of eras see each person's choice -- drowning in the whirlpool of desire for power and money, or firmly guarding the ideals and justice in their hearts. Viewers would directly sense the changes in Hong Kong, the struggle of human nature in an extraordinary era. * (2023/02/06) Best Actor Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Ann Bridgewater's daughter Natalie Hsu (Hui Yan Yi) earlier worked on their film on the streets. With his excellent acting Sing Sing was able to get into character for his bus catching scene in a second, but used to driving hot cars and rarely taking public transportation in recent years he was stumped by the electronic fare collector on the bus. Before taking his mark he studied it for awhile so he would be able to accurately play the character. Kwok Fu Sing and Natalie Hsu (Hui Yan Yi) in their new film MY FIRST OF MAY (MO MING JI) played father and daughter. The film wrapped up production earlier. That day around 2 PM they shot on location at a Kowloon City bus station. Sing Sing's character looked down and out as he began work with a scruffy look. Due to the heavy story, he was in character and frowning throughout. In the scene Sing Sing and the wheelchair bound Natalie tried to catch and board a bus. Serious at work, Sing Sing left no detail to chance. Before the shoot, he and the director boarded the bus and studied the two electronic fare meters in detail. Seemingly the Heavenly King was used to getting around in a private vehicle and not taken a bus in years, he inevitably was curious about the electronic device. In order to play the civilian role well, he and the director repeatedly confirmed every step. During the shoot, Sing Sing walked quickly to catch the bus while Natalie sat in the wheelchair and looked dazed. Although Natalie was a new comer, her body language and eyes were able to meet the demands and fully delivered. After each take they immediately watched the playback, then they would evaluate and return to the shoot again. After three times or so they finished the scene and were very fast. After the shoot Sing Sing seemed to have breathed a sigh of relief. Turning from serious to warm in seconds, behind the camera he chatted and laughed with "daughter" Natalie and the crew in a friendly manner. Later, Sing Sing and the production team moved to outside a computer store on the streets of Sham Shui Po. He changed into another look with a headband and a fanny pack, looking exactly like a neighborhood uncle. He traversed the streets for the shoot and attracted many onlookers. Although Sing Sing looked weathered, he was no less handsome as people frequently praised how handsome and cool he was in person. Sing Sing went back and forth several times like a professional and the director soon accepted the takes. At this time some of the crew called an end to the shoot. Everyone applauded. Natalie who already finished her scenes earlier appeared again to open bottles of champagne with Sing Sing and the team to celebrate the production wrap. Sing Sing was in great spirits, thanked the on and off cameras workers and the bosses and raised a toast to wish for box office success. After the ceremony, Sing Sing without any sign of exhaustion continued to chat with the director and others. After half a hour he finally embraced the workers and bid farewell. He also took photos with Natalie and finally reluctantly boarded his vehicle and left. * (2023/02/06) Director Mabel Cheung Yuen Ting's documentary film TO MY NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD SELF (CUP SUP GAU SHUI DIK NGOR) recently got into trouble. Two of the students in the film "Ah Sheh" Sheh Lai Mei and "Ah Ling" Wong Cheuk Ling both have expressed displeasure at the film, the production team and the school. Ah Ling accused the film and the school of ignoring her wishes and insisted on releasing the film. Ah Sheh was upset with the film's production method. However because they felt that objecting would be useless, they both signed the agreement and attended the promotional events. In addition, the Hong Kong women cycling athlete Sarah Lee Wai Sze blasted Cheung Yuen Ting for putting her interview into the movie without her knowledge. She only found out from fans and said that the interview was conducted after the January 2016 Asian Women's Track Cycling Championship in Japan. At the time she thought it was a general media post race interview. The interviewer never mentioned the purpose of the interview. She only thought that the content of the questions was odd as it was unrelated to the race. She also has asked for assistance in the matter; but because Hong Kong has no image rights and since the video belonged to Cheung Yuen Ting, it being in the film did not violate any law. Lee Wai Sze said, "Since it hasn't violated any law, does that mean it's right? Since it hasn't broken any law, do you not need to ask for consent?" She also said, "I believe everyone would have an idea on why I would 'exist' in the film. I wouldn't watch this movie, and I wouldn't encourage you to either." Cheung Yuen Ting yesterday during an audience appreciation event said that the film starting today (the 6th) would suspense its run, as she hoped to clear all issues before making further arrangements. * (2023/02/05) The 72 year old Mabel Cheung Yuen Ting spent 10 times 3 to make the documentary film TO MY NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD SELF (CUP SUP GAU SHUI DIK NGOR) for her alma mater Ying Wa Girls' School. Before the film was even officially released it has already made over HK$ 7 million from the previews and won the Hong Kong Film Critic Society Award for Best Film. Cheung Yuen Ting on a Commercial Radio program talked about her original intent for the film. She admitted that she never expected the movie would be able to be distributed. "My original intent was only to document the new and old school changes and their influence on 6 students' growth." She thanked the alma mater for cultivating her. During secondary school Papa suddenly passed away and her family was in dire straits. The school after understanding her situation waived her tuition, gave her a scholarship and even free lunches to her and her younger sister. Foreign teachers also hired her to teach them Chinese and give her jobs to make money. When she chose her subject, she chose the sciences for the money. On the first day of school her homeroom teacher ordered her to switch to the arts, later she realized that she liked literature. Her alma mater changed her life, whenever it needed help she would lend a hand. Cheung Yuen Ting and Alex Law Kai Yui, who passed away last year, were known as the film industry "Bonnie and Clyde of Directors". When she looked back at when Law Kai Yui passed away she was very broken. Before they did not registered their marriage, she had no legal position to handle her companion's affairs. "At that moment I really waned to die. First I had to find his will, which was already a lot of trouble. He used to be responsible for the legal, financial and the purchasing departments. I didn't care about them at all, as I was only responsible for the catering department. After his death the accounts were frozen, but I knew nothing at all about when the banks, legal representatives, automatic payments were due. Everyday when I opened the mail box I would be very afraid. The water bill, the electric bill, the management fee, the taxes, car registrations all broke me down. I had to handle them step by step, to make the home to have water and electricity like before was already troublesome enough. I am still dealing with them now. Heavens! They really got me worse than whatever." Has she adjusted to them now? She chuckled, "I pretend he hasn't left! However with so much to deal with, when I have time I would look at his photo and yell at him! Ha! Actually in my heart there is still a huge black hole." Speaking of being in love with Law Kai Yui for 40 years, have they never reached the step of registering their marriage? Cheung Yuen Ting said, "I never thought about it. First we didn't have any children, secondly because we were busy nonstop, I never thought about this and didn't feel it was necessary. Over the years many friends have asked me this question, but seeing them getting married and divorced, divorced and remarried then divorced again, I said it felt like a lot of trouble. The no one would ask me again! A relationship with someone comes from the heart, I really don't feel this was necessary." * (2023/02/05) Master Li Kui Ming said that I CHING MASTER would be the 10th movie in the SUPERNORMAL series. Many of his films PSYCHICS, SHAVE TO REBORN, and PHANTOM OF THE OPERA have repeatedly received international documentary prizes. He believed that the overseas audience would also like to watch the subject of I Ching. The film invited a group of TVB artist friends like Elena Kong Mei Yee, Sammi Cheung Sau Man, Wu Lok Yi and Ng Lai Chu to participate. Elena Kong Mei Yee has already worked with Li Kui Ming on 3 movies and radio programs. * (2023/02/05) The Donnie Yen Chi Tan directed, produced and starred wuxia action film SAKRA (TIN LUNG BAK BO ji KIU FUNG JUEN) opened the year hot. The creators earlier held a meeting in Shenzhen. Producer Wong Jing, executive producer Zhu Weijie attended as well and shared the film production story and creative experience with the audience. At the event, Yen Chi Tan gave a live demonstration of the kung fu from the film and explained the stunt. Every move left viewers fully satisfied. Yen Chi Tan admitted the difficulty of making SAKRA was how to achieve a new breakthrough. He said that he was not afraid of controversy and challenge. Aside from preserving Kiu Fung's classic story and lines, his goal was to create a film that would shock the entire world. He said, "I want to take Chinese action films, especially costume wuxia films and elevate them to international level, so I have to step out, take risks and never return to making the stuff before." Viewers asked about the difference between the movie and previous wuxia films. Yen Chi Tan said that for him, wuxia films were mostly adapted from novels so they were more distant from viewers. He wanted to let go of that baggage, not make the wuxia format. He put his years of martial art background in the modern wuxia films to achieve realism and details. SAKRA's innovation did not stop with reshaping the classic. The executive producer Zhu Weijie mentioned that the film used a breakthrough distribution format, in some countries and regions the movie was released at the cinemas simultaneously. In the Mainland it was online on the three platforms of iQiyi, Tencent Video and Youku. "Even more young people were able to see this format. Using the most economic nd the best way to reach the most views, the movie would promote Chinese traditional wuxia culture to young people." He said that the entire team carried the mission of letting Chinese wuxia culture "step out" and put a lot of effort into doing so. Many viewers after the screening said that Yen Chi Tan was Kiu Fung in their hearts. "Actors were hard to find for the role of Kiu Fung, because he has to be able to fight a lot and also be able to act a lot." Some viewers even asked whether there would be a sequel. Wong Jing and Zhu Weijie responded to the audience's anticipation. "We will continue to work together, hopefully on a sequel." * (2023/02/05) The Sylvia Chang starred film A LIGHT NEVER GOES OUT (DUN FOR LAN SHAN) after being selected for the Tokyo International Film Festival, the Golden Horse Film Festival, the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival, the Bangkok ASEAN Film Festival; it recently received more good news as it was selected for the Rotterdam International Film Festival Harbor program and nominated for the Hong Kong Screenwriters' Association 2022 Best Film Character Award. Playing the character at different ages, Sylvia Chang and Alma Kwok Yi Kwan were both nominated and both felt greatly honored. Sylvia Chang said, "The job of an actor is to bring the character in the screenplay to life, from one dimensional to multi-dimensional." Playing the younger version Kwok Yi Kwan also thanked the Association for the nomination. She also thanked the director and the screenwriters for creating such a touching movie, and Sister Chang for bringing the role to life. Yesterday the movie released an all new teaser to welcome today's Lantern Festival and Valentine's Day this month. Director Anastasia Tsang Hin Ning recently appeared at the Rotterdam International Film Festival and had exchanges with filmmakers there. This was also the first time that she participated in the festival. The film festival's energy and its audience's passion moved her. "Viewers during the screening reacted with laughter and tears, which made me understand my work even more. I knew that it was able to successfully close the gaps of language and culture and moved the international audience, which undoubtedly was very encouraging." After the screening, viewers actively asked questions and shared their experience. They stayed at the cinema and discussed for a very long time. Director Tsang also tirelessly talked with everyone and discovered that everyone found Hong Kong's neon light scenery memorable. Director Tsang added, "The audience felt regret and didn't understand about the loss of the Hong Kong neon light scenery. They were very interested in the new and old street photo comparisons. One was the film prop master there, very curious a about the neon light prop production and mesmerized with the details within." The film festival also provided many exchanges and talks for filmmakers, and arranged for instructors to provide suggestions to new directors' development. Director Tsang admitted that this trip was very beneficial. * (2023/02/04) The BEYOND THE DREAM (WAN OI) director Kiwi Chow Koon Wai directed SAY I DO TO ME (1 YUN FUN LAI) opened on the Lunar 5th, the box office was less than ideal. After 6 days in release (as of January 31st) it has only made HK$ 2.24 million and completely left in the dust by the other two Lunar New Year films A GUILTY CONSCIENCE (DUK SIT DAI JONG) and EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL (CHIU SUN GAING HAI GIP ON HA). With the box office emergency, Chow Koon Wai has been going all over with lead actress Sabrina Ng Ping to thank the audience and fend off the rising tide. Chow Koon Wai believed that the film would have endurance and definitely would find suitable viewers. He also strongly supported Ng Ping as the only choice for the film's lead actress. "I feel many famous actors would not be attractive as him." Chow Koon Wai and Ng Ping earlier attended an audience appreciation event in Causeway Bay. The audience consisted of mainly young viewers and many were entire families. They not only shared their production experience and took a group photo with the audience, they also took individual selfies and signed autographs with viewers. Viewers praised the movie for being entertaining, which encouraged them very much. Chow Koon Wai said that since the movie was able to be released, as the director he was very grateful, very comforted and very excited. He wished that more viewers would go and watch the movie. As for the movie only making HK$ 2.24 million over 6 days, he admitted that the box office performance was less than ideal and the number of shows was declining. Thus he encouraged friends who were interested in this movie to take advantage of the opportunity and go. "The box office is beyond my control. Every movie has its own life. What I can do is promote, after they found out many people have booked shows and private screenings. I hope that would help the box office." Having to face A GUILTY CONSCIENCE (DUK SIT DAI JONG), EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL (CHIU SUN GAING HAI GIP ONG HA), Chow Koon Wai said that it would be very hard to sy whether the scheduling was wrong. He joked that perhaps scheduling the release at another date the movie might have performed even worse. He could only accept Heaven's arrangement. He also said that with many good movies in release at the same time, viewers having choices would be a good thing. Thus SAY I DO TO ME (1 YUN FUN LAI) did not receive a lot of scheduling. "Indeed it is difficult. I feel the power of movies doesn't just rely on box office, but from every viewer who relates to this movie." Speaking of online claims that the movie would be scheduled for an early and a late show, viewers would not be able to support the movie even if they wanted to. Has he fought for more shows with cinema owners? Chow Koon Wai of course hoped for more shows and believed that the movie had endurance. "Less shows don't mean a short run. I hope for slow, long trickle that would keep having viewers. Then the movie definitely would have cinemas that would keep it running." He said that he received many viewers' review and felt that the movie was more than just a romantic comedy, that it made them thinking a lot about how to love themselves, be honest with themselves. The reactions have been good. Some said that the film's actor lacked recognition, which was one of the reasons that it was not attractive? Chow Koon Wai disagreed. "Not just having famous actors would bring good box office. In the past there have been many examples of movies with famous actors with very poor box office. (Have you question whether Ng Ping is qualified enough to be the lead actress?) She absolutely has the ability. In the film she is very attractive, many famous actors would not be as attractive as her. Some felt that bringing together a lot of famous actors to make a movie would make it a good movie, which is strange logic." Speaking of his previous film BEYOND THE DREAM (WAN OI) making HK$ 15 million, what would the goal for SAY I DO TO ME be? Chow Koon Wai said that he really wanted to break even so investors would not have to lose money. "If this movie's production cost was HK$ 9 million, around HK$ 27 million would break even. This would also be my earliest goal. (Does that seem very remote now?) I try not to think about it. I don't want to just look at the box office, the most important is for the movie to be seen. It definitely would be able to find its suitable audience." Making her big screen debut, Ng Ping not only received praises from the director but also love from viewers. Many fans said that they watched the movie twice or more because of her. Ng Ping said that she was very touched, the most exaggerated was when a fan told her she watched it five times. As for the less than ideal box office performance, Ng Ping urged everyone to go and show their support, Even if the cinemas were a little remote. She would also work hard on audience appreciation events and through "Pomato" to urge fans to go. As for online criticism of her acting, Ng Ping knew that she had a lot of shortcoming and many scenes could be performed better. She would accept everyone's opinions. Some said that she could just make videos online but not yet qualified to carry a movie. She said, "I don't know if I am qualified or not, but now I am carrying the load. I hope everyone would support me." She said that she would not stop working because of this, some talk would be better than none at all. 13 year old viewers Cherry and Winnie said that they have watched it twice to support Ng Ping. Cherry disagreed that Ng Ping was not qualified yet, as each person would have her own advantages and disadvantages. She felt that Ng Ping was already great in her first role, so she would not need to care about online reviews. If the opportunity would arise, they would go again and recommend the film to friends. Also watching for the second time, Kelvin said that he supported Ng Ping and the film. The story was not rotten and he was able to relate to themes like loving yourse3lf. He gave Ng Ping 95 points. * (2023/02/04) Jeffrey Ngai Chun Sun, Kaho Hung and Angus Yeung Tin Yue in the film EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL (CHIU SUN GAING HAI GIP ONG HA) poured themselves into their performance. Jeffrey and Angus got hurt from fighting but could only toughed it out. Kaho got splinters all over his arms from climbing a tree. Although the production was difficult, they felt that this was a rare opportunity and experience that were worth all the effort. Ngai Chun Sun, Hung Ka Ho and Yeung Tin Yue took part in the Emperor Motion Picture EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL. The trio had a lot of action scenes in the film. Jeffrey and Angus even fought each other in a scene, but both got hurt. For the performance they could only tough it out. Jeffrey said, "Both of our injuries were a little exaggerated. I didn't have a lot to work with to begin with, as soon as I started I had to jump kick. After over a dozen takes, in the first hour I already pulled something. Despite the pain I kept going. After toughing out the day I needed first aid." Angus said that they made low level mistakes of not warming up and stretching before hand. He and Jeffrey both needed acupuncture therapy. Angus admitted that the injury affected his performance, which he was a little upset and disappointed over. Jeffrey agreed and said that after pulling something every step hurt. The pain also slowed down his kicks. Angus joked that he and Jeffrey got to know each other through fighting. His first scene with Kaho was seeing him remove his pants, which left a deep memory for him. Kaho said that this pants removal scene he had to overcome his psychological barriers. His character like a cat had nine lives and was immortal. He said, "The toughest was climbing the tree and wire work. The tree gave me splinters all over my arms. In addition, in the film my faces was covered in blood 70% of the time. When the blood got into my eyes it was very irritating. The emergency medic immediately washed out my eyes." In addition, Kaho 10 days after the wrap had concerts to perform. He said that he worked on the movie in the morning and rehearsed at night. He also could not eat to reduce stress. He stated that the month of making the movie was the toughest days he had as a singer, but he felt that the rare experience was worth the effort. Jeffrey also had to disrobe, thus he trained to get into shape. However he pointed out Angus was the one who carried the muscle load. Kaho also said that Angus's shape made the public enemy of men. Jeffrey praised Angus as Mr. Fitness, but Angus revealed that in the film he only got to show off for a second. Working with Hins Cheung King Hin and Ivana Wong Yuen Chi for the first time, Jeffrey said that as everyone knew Lord Hin was a very nice person. After getting to know him he realized that he was actually very playful, had the heart of a child and had no arrogance at all. He joked that he often tested Lord Hin's bottom line; Ivana on the other hand had great comedic rhythm. Kaho said that Ivana was also playful. From the two elders they learned to be professional, no matter how rough the production was they never complained. Angus agreed that Lord Hin and Ivana had a lot of heart on the set. For the final argument scenes, they put a lot of effort into studying the script so the result would have even more spark. * (2023/02/04) The "Strongest in the Universe" Donnie Yen Chi Tan produced, directed and starred Lunar New Year film SAKRA (TIN LUNG BAK BO ji KIU FUNG JUEN) has opened for several weeks and kept receiving good news. The film's heat on several Mainland video platforms continued to grow, for days it topped the pay internet movie chart. Reportedly, currently 5 million people have viewed the film on Mainland pay channel as the film became the Spring Festival pay internet film box office champion. The total viewers reached 20 million and would likely set historical box office record again. In addition, an U.S. streaming platform recently announced that it has already purchased SAKRA's online broadcast rights to a dozen or so countries and regions including Hong Kong. Chi Tan happily said, "I on behalf of the on and off camera heroes thank everyone for the recognition. Because making this movies wasn't easy at all, the entire team deserves the praise. I hope to see everyone down the road!" * (2023/02/03) TVB and Radio Hong Kong last year jointly held the Hong Kong Gold Song Award ceremony. Reportedly the two stations fought over control last year and were less than pleasant. In addition with the lukewarm outside reviews, it would end after just one year. Radio Hong Kong would resume Top Ten Chinese Gold Song Awards in April, while TVB would conceive an award show with the Mainland. However TVB last month responded to media inquiries, "This station and Radio Hong Kong have always had a good working relationship. This station would not comment on untrue speculations. Radio Television Hong Kong today held its New Spring group visit. Broadcasting director Eddie Cheung Kwok Choi announced that in May this year RTHK would hold the "Broadcasting 95 Years: Top Ten Chinese Gold Song Award concert". Taking part in the group visit, TVB general manager (business operations) Siu Sai Wo declined any interview. RTHK creative director Steven Ma Chun Wai said that the joint award show last year with TVB was due to the pandemic, not a long term collaboration. He said, "(Eric) Tsang Chi Wai's relationship with RTHK is great, so we wouldn't have dispute. In addition separate events have always been easier to organize." * (2023/02/02) The Dayo Wong Tze Wa starred film A GUILTY CONSCIENCE (DUK SIT DAI JONG) yesterday announced that it has reached 7th place among the highest grossing Hong Kong film in history with OVER HK$ 60.9 million. The film has triggered as a series of discussions. Some mentioned that the big family, murder in the film reminded them of the 1999 "Pang Chor Ying case". Mary Jean Reimer (Yung Jing Jing) on social media posted the related posts. In 2005 Pang Chor Ying's family asked her for help and suggested to the government a Coroner's Court hearing. She said that the case was a "legal tragedy that took place during the Hong Kong colonial era." Some said that Yung Jing Jing was the basis for A GUILTY CONSCIENCE's lawyer and that she was the real "Lam Leung Shui". Yung Jing Jing said that she has yet to watch A GUILTY CONSCIENCE, but she believed they would not be related. Only because she has handled many cases, people were trying to connect the dots. Yung Jing Jing recently on social media shared her experience as a lawyer, saying that each time she took a special case someone would visit her mother and want her to quit. Thus her mother suggested for her to bring water to court, if someone would throw acid at her she would be able to wash it off. Speaking of A GUILTY CONSCIENCE's Lam Leung Shui being based on her, Yung Jing Jing said that she was not in Hong Kong so she has not yet seen the film. However she has heard the story and was interested in going to see the movie. She revealed that when THE SPARRING PARTNER opened, some already said that she was the basis for the lawyer. She said, "Actually it's not related, because of the cases I have handled people were just trying to connect the dots." Yung Jing Jing while handling the "Pang Chor Ying case" experienced inexplicable supernatural events. "Although the Coroner's Court closed the case, if you would ask me whether the victim would rest in peace I would answer, 'No." She (Pang Chor Ying) would occasionally appear at my home. My worker has seen her but I haven't." Yung Jing Jing revealed that during the pandemic, many units that have been preparing legal scenes have contacted her. At the time she was not in Hong Kong and declined. Reportedly some film people was preparing to adapt the 2010 case of "Kan Ka Leung family murders"; Yung Jing Jing also participated in the case and has heard the news, but no one has contacted her yet. "The book I wrote already have many cases that could be studied in detail. I have the responsibility to maintain confidentiality, I can't reveal the details. I have thought about writing a screenplay, or be interested in consulting, as long as time would permit. Earlier my acting bug had its fill. I guest starred in a movie in Macau and played (Cherry) Ngan Cheuk Ling's mother. However in the short run I wouldn't be able to participate in performing, because I would have to assist with my husband's business." Yung Jing Jing said that the legal world had many subjects, many shocking cases that could be made in movies that would definitely be attractive. Since both THE SPARRING PARTNER (JING YI WUI LONG) and A GUILTY CONSCIENCE (DUK SIT DAI JONG) performed well, she believed that people would keep making the subject. She hoped that filmmakers would put an effort into serious productions and not to ruin the legal subject. Has she missed her war of words days in court? Yung Jing Jing said, "Many of my cases required me to put up both money and effort, in one a young person with autism was accused of murder. I spent 300 hours but made no money. The 2015 Ting Wai Monastery case still has not concluded yet." Yung Jing Jing said that she had to focus her energy on business. Her husband Sean Hotung's family business is all over the world, but he recently has focused on writing his law doctorate thesis. She said, "My husband wants to be a scholar, so I can only be the business person and handle the properties. Even leaking pipes became my business. I really am very busy." * (2023/02/02) Donnie Yen Chi Tan earlier attended a film special screening and mentioned when he first opened a film company the movie bombed at the box office. However he did not give up his dream and finally he was able to fight his way out! In the new film he performed highly difficult stunts and risked challenging his weakness, as he risked his life on a thrilling riding scene. The Yen Chi Tan directed and starred film SAKRA (TIN LUNG BAK BO ji KIU FUNG JUEN) was released online in the Mainland during the Lunar New Year and received decent response. Some online pointed out that the film aside from the fight scenes also had very outstanding shots, as they praised Chi Tan to be a fully qualified director. Actually years ago he directed and starred in two movies, LEGEND OF THE WOLF (JIN LONG CHUEN SUEN) and BALLISTIC KISS (SAT SAT YUN TIU TIU MO), but both bombed at the box office. Earlier when he attended a special screening in Hong Kong, he talked about this again. "In 1995 I started a film company, directed and starred in two movies but both failed. My bank account only had 100 bucks left, I didn't even have the money to eat and had to ask the producer to treat. The movie's box office failed insanely, at the time because the film had to wrap up production I even borrowed from loan sharks. However I never gave up." Grinding his teeth, he kept going and finally reached the peak of his career of IP MAN. He never lingered on the halo of success. Instead he kept looking for breakthrough. Also because of this, he decided to make costume films and direct again. He spent a lot of effort into interpreting a different Kiu Fung. In one of the riding scenes, he in order to bring out the boldness of the character risked his life. He said, "I didn't know how to ride. Early on in my career I learned on the set, but for years I haven't made a costume film. I had to adjust anew. In one scene I took eight disciples riding in the forest. The action design was to drink and ride. Controlling the riding director and opening the wine to drink were both very difficult. With the slightly mishap I would fall to the ground. The people behind wouldn't be able to stop in time, so if I fell to the ground I would definitely be trampled to death! That's filmmaking though, a lot of risks would be taken. Luckily in the end I was able to get this scene." In addition, the film's lead actress Yukee Chen Yuqi kept promoting online recently with cute poses. * (2023/02/02) The 47th Hong Kong International Film Festival yesterday announced that Best Actor Aaron Kwok Fu Sing as the film festival ambassador for the fifth year in a row. From March 30th to April 10th the film festival would take place with both physical and online formats. As for repeating as the film festival ambassador, Sing Sing said that he was very honored. "Whether with the audience or film industry colleagues, to be able to have face to face exchanges again would be the best way to communicate." He felt that 2022 was a full harvest year for Hong Kong film, as many new directors' films had both good box office and word of mouth. He was happy to see a sign of life returning to domestic films.
