MISCELLANEOUS * (2023/01/18) The BEYOND THE DREAM (WAN OI)'s director Kiwi Chow Koon Wai directed, YouTube channel Pomato member Sabrina Ng Ping and HAND ROLLED CIGARETTE (SAU GUEN YIN)'s director Chan Kin Long starred SAY I DO TO ME (1 YUN FUN LAI) would open during the Lunar New Year, opposite Dayo Wong Tze Wa's A GUILTY CONSCIENCE (DUK SIN DAI JONG) and Hins Cheung King Hin's EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL (CHIU SUN GAING HAI GIP ON HA). Chow Koon Wai said that he had no pressure, did not want film to become a competitive battlefield, wished everyone well and good movies get good results. He admitted that after the release of his documentary REVOLUTION OF OUR TIMES, investors who originally were interested in supporting SAY I DO TO ME had second thoughts and backed out. He thanked one of the investors Chapman To Mak Chak for his unwavering support, with which the production was able to successfully begin. Chow Koon Wai admitted that some difficulties arose while raising financing for SAY I DO TO ME. He asked many investors but ran into brick walls everywhere. "This film was under preparation after BEYOND THE DREAM was released. Because BEYOND THE DREAM performed well, very quickly I was able to find enough money to start production. Later because of my documentary film REVOLUTION OF OUR TIMES' release, many investors who really wanted to support me had second thoughts and backed out. Only To Man Chak's support was unwavering. I finally spent several months to raise funding anew. At first indeed I was upset. They agreed to invest but backed out, but I of course understood. Actually I was upset at the situation that required so much self censorship." Ah Jat once expressed that he founded Hong Kong Film Production Co. Ltd. in hopes to contributing to domestic films. He wished that once day, Hong Kong film would no longer need to break out of Lei Yue Mun and be able to be self sufficient, Hong Kong people able to afford to raise Hong Kong people. Chow Koon Wai joked, "I want to break out of Lei Yue Mun, and make money all around the world." Chow Koon Wai felt that what To Man Chak said made sense. "Hong Kong film productions' primary market of course are Hong Kong people, which conceivably would be more able to relate. I too hope to be self-sufficient. In the past Hong Kong film golden age we were able to. In the past half a year film suddenly thrived, it felt like a sign of revival, a return to those glory days. However no one knows whether it would last for awhile or have another breakthrough. Self sufficient so that investors can profit, not to say get rich; only with a little reward would people continue to invest in film productions, being able to sustain the industry is how it would become healthy." BEYOND THE DREAM made over HK$ 15 million and became one of the top ten highest grossing Hong Kong films of 2020. Chow Koon Wai of course hoped that SAY I DO TO ME would perform as well as BEYOND THE DREAM, but when the rival Lunar New Year films would be Wong Tze Wa's A GUILTY CONSCIENCE and Cheung King Hin's EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL, would he have the confidence to beat them? Chow Koon Wai said, "I don't want to turn film into a competitive battlefield. I wish everyone well. Good movies would have good rewards, not good movies would not have good rewards. I don't know whether type it belongs to." Chow Koon Wai revealed that SAY cost more than BEYOND THE DREAM. "In comparison to BEYOND THE DREAM, this film is much more complicated. BEYOND THE DREAM mostly was (Terrance) Lau Chun Him and (Cecilia) Choi Sze Wan's romantic story without much of a scale, but SAY I DO TO ME have many large scenes with more participants. Because it is a comedy, I want the pace to be fast so the scenes and shot numbers are more. In addition I am after something stylish, and tried more possibilities. I spent more time, so in turn I also spent more money." BEYOND THE DREAM and SAY I DO TO ME are both romantic films, but the feeling would be drastically different. The former was heavier and the latter would be lighter. Chow Koon Wai revealed that some friends after watching SAY I DO TO ME's trailer and promotions did not dare to believe that he would make this type of movie. They texted him, "I really like BEYOND THE DREAM, I can't accept that I have made SAY I DO TO ME." He made the romantic comedy because the subject was fresh, and he has never made a comedy. He wanted to challenge himself and hope that the movie would make everyone a little happier. "The subject give me a comedic sense, so I turned the interesting wedding of one into a comedy." Why did Chow Koon Wai ask Ah Bing, a YouTuber without any acting experience, to perform? He said, "I only watched movies, I never saw Youtuber perform. To me they are strangers. I only knew a little before Ah Bing through a friend's introduction, saying that since this film was about YouTuber, why not use a real YouTuber to perform. However most at the audition were film actors. In the end I chose Ah Bing, first because she was pretty. In the film she needed to attract other characters to like her, she had to be credible. Secondly she had to be young, energetic and cute, I didn't want to find an older actor to deliberately play young. Ah Bing met all the conditions, the only concern was that she has not acted before. However after the audition I thought she was the most suitable." As for Chan Kin Long, they met through a friend's introduction. "When the friend sent me Chan Kin Long's brief introduction, I was stunned and immediately turned off my phone. (Why did you mind him?) Because he and the character image was very far apart, which Chan Kin Long also admitted. I thought for awhile, but still felt he was worth a try." Making her first debut, Ah Bing felt it was very fresh. Because the role was sizable and the story also revolved around her, she spent a lot of time before hand to understand where the story was coming from and would be going and the emotional journey of every scene. Ah Bing said, "If I only listened to the director's words and performed, the character would lack a soul." As a director Chan Kin Long felt that playing the role of Dickson was also difficult. "The role is very different from me. When the producer approached me, I didn't believe that Director Chow Koon Wai would ask me to play this role. I thought the director was very daring, but being daring is a necessity for creators. Perhaps I have participated in behind the scene work before, during the performance would start from the production angle." They had exchanges on the set as well, Chow Koon Wai was grateful to Chan Kin Long for giving him some suggestions, which made some shots even more life like. Chan Kin Long felt that making people laugh was very hard. "(Ronald) Cheng Chung Kei and (Nick) Cheung Ka Fai each have their own fans, to make the general public laugh, that type of sense of humor is very hard. In the film I didn't deliberately make people laugh, I felt that I wasn't too humorous. So I had to start from the character, and make people laugh through the absurd happenings." The most memorable for him was the helmet hitting his forehead 3 times. His forehead started to swell and luckily he did not "see red"; the most memorable for Ah Bing was giving her first on screen kiss to Chan Kin Long, and falling into the sea. Because there was no room for error, she had to get it in one take. Before hand she kept practicing on land. * (2023/01/18) The Hins Cheung King Hin, Ivana Wong Yuen Chi, Jeffrey Ngai Chun Sun, Michael Ning (Bak Ji), Kaho Hung and others starred Lunar New Year film EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL (CHIU SUN GAING HAI GIP ONG HA) after the premiere and preview screenings brought viewers a lot of pleasant surprises. Aside from Carol Cheng Yui Ling's guest voice performance, another mystery actor also appeared. After over 10 years away from acting, Juno Mak Chun Lung played the mob boss "Chairman Lai" and appeared as a butcher that stole the show. Juno said that he returned to the big screen completely because of director Ying Chi Wan. They have worked together before, at the time Ying was an assistant director. "When I knew that Ying Chi Wan wrote a mystery character for me and hoped that I could perform, I never thought that it would be in a crazy comedy Lunar New Year film." He not only hoped to support new directors but also contribute to Hong Kong film. In order to bring the mob boss to life, Juno studied the character in detail before taking his mark, coming up with an exceptional "Chairman Lai". This time the production team was very young. Juno on the set truly sensed that aside from the familiar production team, he also ran into many younger generation new faces. Director Ying Chi wan thanked Juno for his help and willingness to get crazy with him. He said that "Chairman Lai" in my heart would always be the "Strongest Villain". * (2023/01/18) The film SAKRA (TIN LUNG BAK BO ji KIU FUNG JUEN) two nights ago held a charity premiere. As the producer, the chief director and the star Donnie Yen Chi Tan, producer Wong Jing, actors Tsui Siu Ming, Ray Lui Leung Wai, Eddie Cheung Siu Fai and Grace Wong Kwan Hing dressed up for the occasion. Chi Tan was very happy to hold a premiere in Hong Kong, feeling that finally we have walked out of the darkness and he was very happy. He believed that the Hong Kong economy would be revived anew! Yen Chi Tan appeared with his wife Cissy Wang. Sister in law Wang Yuan Yuan also attended. He revealed that he just returned to Hong Kong from promoting SAKRA in Singapore and Malaysia. The overwhelming response from the audience there made him very happy. "I sense that the film market seemingly has not been affected by the pandemic and the economy. Several tens of thousands of people filled the shopping center, as I got back the cheerful scenes from before." He also pointed out that fans in Singapore and Malaysia were very passionate and asked him to make more movies. Chi Tan was also very happy to hold the premiere in Hong Kong. "Due to the pandemic I haven't held a premiere at the Convention Center, it feels like finally we were out of the darkness and I am very happy. I believe the Hong Kong economy would be revived anew!" Would a sequel be made? He admitted that he already had a story in mind and how to continue the characters. He stressed that this time was not a remake, but a 2023 costume wuxia film. "Overseas there is THE AVENGERS, we too have our very strong wuxia films!" Was he confident about the box office? He said that of course he would be happy about a good box office performance, but people would always have highs and lows. He would try to make the movie great. "With words of mouth (the movie) naturally would be good. Doing something with confidence, sincerity, hard work, passion and love, it already wouldn't be bad. I want to thank the cast and the crew for risking their lives to support me." Cissy Wang also praised this movie as her favorite among her husband's films that she has seen. "I grew up overseas, so I am not too familiar with costume films. I was like a blank piece of paper when I watched it, but I very much got into it and wanted more." Chi Tan joked, "After my wife watched IP MAN, she only said it's OK. Thus the box office isn't important, the most important is my wife likes it. That already beats everything!" Lui Leung Wai and Cheung Siu in SAKRA did not have any scene together. Brother Lui joked that Brother Fai as the "romantic" King Duen would have to handle many women. Brother Fai said that they were not too numerous, as he was only between Grace Wong Kwan Hing and Kara Wai Ying Hung. Also because of the tight shoot schedule, in the end his emotional scene with Wong Kwan Hing was removed. Brother Fai would rather work on fight scenes than intimate scenes. "Romantic scenes aren't easy to shoot, the lines are very hard to draw. I would rather work on fight scenes." Brother Lui said that this time he would appear as a mystery character, his fight scenes would be saved for the next film. Brother Lui pointed out that two to three years ago he has already begun training. When he took his mark he could be even more agile. "In addition I had to be in a duel with Yen Chi Tan. His punches and kicks were fast and hard, if I waited until the shoot to train it would be too late." Earlier at the TVB Anniversary Awards, Brother Lui and Brother Fai were guest presenters and praised as being even better maintained than the ladies. Brother Lui stated, "Men would have a little advantage, as we aged we would become more and more mature. Although I look older than when I was younger, but the charm and the flavor would come out." Would they be interested in working on a series again? Brother Fai admitted that if he would return to TVB to make a series he mainly would want to see his former co-workers. The feeling would be very familiar, but the most important would be a suitable screenplay and a schedule that he would be able to coordinate with. Brother Lui during the award presentation joked that if Kenix Kwok Ho Ying would return to make a TVB series then he would. He pointed out that the general manager Eric Tsang Chi Wai has spoken to him about it. For him too it would depend on the script and the schedule. Recently when he worked on movies he had to work several night shoots. He said that he was not what he used to be and needed time for sleep and rest. * (2023/01/18) Grace Wong Kwan Hing in the film SAKRA (TIN LUNG BAK BO ji KIU FUNG JUEN) played Madame Ma. In the film she had to seduce people in the Beggars Gang. Grace said that she has not seen her own performance, but this time would preserve the sassiness from THE RIGHTEOUS FISTS. Was she worried that her husband would be jealous? She said that her husband came to the premiere with her, but he already was used to it so she would not worried. Instead she did not dare to let Papa see her. Grace this time felt very honored to have received Yen Chi Tan's invitation to perform. She said that when Wong Jing said that the production would begin, she already sent her information to him without knowing her role. Overnight she was already cast. Being able to work with Yen Chi Tan, she admitted that she was a little surprised. Unfortunately this time she did not have too much kung fu performance and she was unable to trade blows with the "Strongest in the Universe". "However I mustered up the courage to show him my action videos. He truly taught me unique ways to fight. I hope to have a chance in the future to fight with him a little, I would faint from how happy I would be!" In the film Cya Liu had to step on Kwan Hing's hand. Because her palm was thinner, during the shoot she had to tough out her tears to finish the scene. However Yen Chi Tan told her to be careful and was very protective of actor safety. Before the shoot he arranged for protective paddings to be in place. Grace has left the nest of TVB for a year already, during which she did not lack employment3 opportunities. She stated that after leaving her comfort zone, she made new attempts with different people and in different environments. By chance she went to the Mainland to work on a variety show and got to work on this film, because if she was in Hong Kong she would have needed to be in a quarantine and miss the opportunity. "People like me who started on television would have more difficulty with getting into the film industry, so this time I started anew like a newcomer in a strange environment, learned different culture and benefit a lot." Would she continue to work in the Mainland in the future? Grace said that now she would stay in Hong Kong. Because earlier she was away from her husband for too long, now she would need to make time to keep him company. Thus she would welcome job offers for everyone. * (2023/01/18) The Kwan Chi Yiu directed, Andy Lau Tak Wa produced and starred along with Gordon Lam Ka Tung, Eddie Peng Yu-Yan, Cya Liu, crime action film with a special performance by Simon Yam Tat Wa, I DID IT MY WAY (CHUM HUNG), would open this year. The film company yesterday released a trailer of the battle of brains and brawn. In the short 15 second trailer, gun shots and explosions were endless. Cruel waterboarding, Wa Jai in a blood stained suit, Cya Liu shed tears in a hospital bed, all the scenes were all shocking and mysterious and left viewers out of breath. In it Lam Ka Tung said, "I am afraid to die!" Wa Jai also said, "Me too!" Those two brief lines were either real emotions between brothers and a test between each other, hiding the mystery of who was good and who was evil. How the cops Peng Yu-Yan and Yam Tat Wa amid all the danger would oppose truly sly and cruel enemies, everything would have to wait to be unveiled. * (2023/01/17) Best Actors Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Tony Leung Chiu Wai teamed up with PORT OF CALL (DAP HUET CHUM MUI)'s director, Hong Kong Film Award winning screenwriter Philip Yung Tsz Kwong on the new film WHERE THE WIND BLOWS (FUNG JOI HEI SI). The movie has officially been set for a February 17 nationwide release. WHERE THE WIND BLOWS would differ from past movies about the legend of the Four Great Detectives. With all new vision the film would bring the audience back to that controversial era and stress the changing of the times. with a poetic style, the film would the glory days of Hong Kong hand in hand with the audience. Yung Tsz Kwong invited two Best Actors Kwok Fu Sing and Leung Chiu Wai for their first confrontation. They would with their white hot acting skills memorably interpret two Chinese Detective Lui Lok and Nam Kong's growth and inner world, not only dissecting the reasons for their ambitious journey but also depict in detail their emotional world with their family and lovers. * (2023/01/17) The Emperor Motion Picture EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL (CHIU SUN GAING HAI GIP ONG HA) last night held a charity premiere. Emperor Group chief Albert Yeung Sau Sing and wife Luk Siu Man led the film's actors Hins Cheung King Hin, Ivana Wong Yuen Chi, Jeffrey Ngai Chun Sun, Kaho Hung and others in attendance; even more artists came to show their support, including Irene Wan Bik Ha, Catherine Chau Ka Yi, Michelle Wai Sze Nga, Kathy Yuen (Tong Yee), Vincy Chan (Wing Yi) and others. Hin Jai also boldly said that if the box office would reach HK$ 50 million, he would go fencing to celebrate. Hin Jai said that the night before he could not fall asleep. Because this time would be the premiere for his first movie lead in his life, it felt like a wedding banquet. He was very pleased to have so many other halves, but he was very nervous that whether everyone would like this baby (movie). Speaking of the box office, Hin Jai joked that he would stick the HK$ 80 million actress (Ivana). He would be very happy with half that box office number. He also already thought of how to celebrate. When they would reach HK$ 20 million, he and Jeffrey would train for 3 months then show off their muscles. Would they go full frontal? He suddenly was reminded of Kaho, who was the only one had to show front and back in the movie. He said that he was like a fish in the frying pan, having to keep flipping between the front and the back. He continued, if the box office would reach HK$ 50 million they would go fencing; if they would reach HK$ 60 million they would even beat each other with sticks, but only with the actors in the movie. Ivana followed up and said that if they would want box office success, she would have no difficulty with wearing a swimsuit. She did not know whether the audience would want to see her or not. However speaking of the nonstop fighting with Hin Jai in the movie, she suggested that with HK$ 70 million they could sell tickets and stream their fight live online. Hin Jai said, "Ivana has studied Muay Thai kickboxing, but I too have studied Wing Chun. I am especially great at 'sheep-clamping stance', because since I was little I was able to stand for a long time and hold back from going to the bathroom. I have already achieved real kung fu." Ivana joked, "During the shoot I couldn't tell you had any real kung fu!" Hin Jai replied that the real deal would not show off. When the duo mentioned that it would be the first time they worked the film's premiere version, has Ivana's husband come to show his support? She said that her husband was afraid of the crowd so this night he did not attend; he has made a habit of booking a show to watch with the whole family, including her father in law and mother in law, whenever she was in a movie. That way they would be able to watch it even more comfortably. On the other hand, Hin Jai revealed that Kaho had a frontal nude scene in the film. Kaho said that he was half naked but actually he worse several pairs of nude underwear and had censor pixelization. However in the story he fainted, due to the environment restrictions he could not move. When shooting this scene the assistant director removed his pants for him, which made him feel very small. He said that it was the first time a man took off his pants in his adulthood. Was it awkward? He joked that since he already signed the contract, he could not go back on his word so he had to tough it out. He would not get to regret anything either, as long as everyone would watch the movies a few more times then he would be the effort would be worth it. Speaking of Hin Jai boldly stated that when the box office would reach the goal all the guys would have to beat each other with swords and staffs to celebrate, Kaho and Jeffrey both agreed that Hin Jai was so daring to set a trap for them. In the film Hin Jai also lead the team, so they would still follow Hin Jai. * (2023/01/17) The Hong Kong Film Critic Society yesterday announced the 29th Hong Kong Film Critic Society Awards' 5 awards and 9 recommended films. She was pleasantly surprised, saying that when she made this documentary film she did not think about winning any award. "2022 was a Hong Kong film industry miracle. Movies of the same period came into full bloom, with unique subjects and many new directors. Old, middle aged and young directors all put in their efforts to make the film industry thrive again like the spring sprout after the rain. I am the happiest that the audience has been very supportive of Hong Kong films, returning to the movies to watch Hong Kong films as many movies reached high box office. In film history, 2022 would be chronicled as a very unique. I too have done my part." Best Actress Cheng Sau Man said, "I remember the last time I won the HKFCS Award was 22 years ago. Today I got the news, I was so moved that I couldn't speak for a very long time. In particular of my acting journey, I once was lost and low. Special thanks to the Society, this award is extraordinarily meaningful to me. However I am even more certain that on my future acting I would have to keep working hard. Thank you Director Ka Sing Fung for giving me the opportunity to play 'Auntie Tin Mei'. Thank you to the LOST LOVE team. Even more importantly, I wish everyone would continue to support Hong Kong film." Ka Sing Fung said that before writing the script he already cast Cheng Sau Man to star. She was the only choice for Auntie Tin Mei. Cheng Sau Man found the right role, and the role found the right her. DETECTIVE VS. SLEUTHS was Wai Ka Fai directed, produced, and written, Sean Lau Ching Wan, Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin, Raymond Lam Fung, Carlos Chan Ka Lok and others starred. No video games! No......" Screenwriter Chan Wai Bun said, "Thank you Mr. Wai, thank you DETECTIVE VS. SLEUTHS on and off camera colleagues, thank you HKFCS." Best Actor Cheung Kai Chung was very happy and grateful. "Thank you to the many 'Jak Gor" I have run into in my life. Many people have done a lot of good things for me, making me believe that this world has 'Jak Gor'. I hope through this character to express that each one of us could become 'Jak Gor'. In the end I believe, we would always have the right to choose what kind of people we would become, no mater what kind of world we re in. I hope we would be able to keep working hard. I would maintain a humble heart, continue to work hard to become a good actor. Thank you everyone." His wife Kay Tse On Kay congratulated him online immediately, "Dear Mr. Cheung, you have always been a good actor I respect and love. He have played your part fully to tell the story well, silently toiling in service of the character. Generous and attentive, you diligently show the audience the world behind the story and the vision of the screenplay." THE NARROW ROAD's director Lam Sum also won Best Director. "THE NARROW ROAD began production at the peak of the pandemic, experiencing the pain and suffering with the people Hong Kong. Every step was not easy. Looking back at the many decisions and choices during its creation, they were based on the life experience of that moment. I hope this movie would embrace everyone, so to be able to win an award I have to thank everyone. Seeing life gradually returning to normal, I hope everyone would bite down and not let go. It definitely would get better!" 2022 HONG KONG FILM CRITIC SOCIETY AWARDS BEST FILM: TO MY NINETEEN YEAR OLD SELF BEST DIRECTOR: Wai Ka Fai (DETECTIVE VS. SLEUTHS, SEPTET, TABLE FOR SIX, HONG KONG FAMILY, THE SPARRING PARTNER, WARRIORS OF FUTURE * (2023/01/16) SAKRA (TIN LUNG BAK BO ji KIU FUNG JUEN) was very important to Chi Tan. Although the film in Mainland has only been arranged for video streaming platform release, he still promoted hard. Aside from making one after another surprise appearances at the Hong Kong advanced screenings, he recently even flew to Singapore, Malaysia and Korea to promote. Currently in Singapore and Malaysia, he began his first close contact with Southeast Asian fans for the first time since the pandemic began. Fans' passion only increased. Before deciding to make SAKRA, Chi Tan did not know much about Kiu Fung. Later looking up information and watching past related television series, he gradually formed an image of the character. "Actually many years ago people already said I resembled him. Kiu Fung is very able to reflect the pressure modern people faced, when he ran into unfair condemnations he would undertake them with a very open mind. He would be indifferent to face unreasonable accusations people piled on. (Just like you?) In my 40 years in the business I had highs and lows, as a celebrity I stood at the tip of the storm. If I told you I had none (gossip) I would be lying to you, but as I grew older I would face it with more and more maturity. I understood that life was short, the most important was to have a clear conscience. Should I run out to clarify every time? (Now nothing can get to you?) Yes, maybe I would have a momentary reaction. I am still human, but it wouldn't have any enduring effect on me!" Speaking of this film not being able to be released in Mainland cinemas, Chi Tan said, "I feel every movie would have its own life, which is beyond my control. Movies would either lose or win, I have won more so many years. If I win I win, if I lose I lose! This movie from the beginning already had 3 video platforms' investments. Online development is a trend, something on television might not necessarily be bad. As a creator, I just want more people to see my work!" He described making SAKRA as successfully climbing a tall mountain, as the 2 hour long film would try to balance the rich colors of the original novel. Was he satisfied? He said, "Film would have always regret, satisfaction wouldn't be 100%. I am the happiest about being able to go 90% without using slo-mo, now costume films often lacked the wuxia realism. Martial artists' special features would be squandered, everyone would just make some poses. I would insist on giving the realest feeling that the audience is after." * (2023/01/16) Louise Wong Dan Nei, ERROR member Dee Ho Kai Wa, Gardner Tse Kwan Ho and others yesterday attended their film promotion. Wong Dan Nei revealed that in a table smacking scene, her emotions drove her to smack the table with all her might. She ended up with being bruised from the tip of her pinky finger all the way up to her arm, which took a week to fade away. Dee was asked whether his group mates would book a show to show their support. He joked, "ERROR is more rebellious. Several MIRROR brothers Frankie, Stanley, AK after watching the VIP screening also posted in support." Speaking of his group mate Fatboy earlier went to Malaysia to recruit for KING MAKER V, Dee revealed that the participant quality would be high. "One of them with eyes and nose covered really looks just like AK. (Would they be any threat to ERROR?) They would threat MIRROR. One of them is really like 193, I am referring to height. However he is a model and 193 isn't, but just like him he doesn't have any skill!" * (2023/01/15) TVB and Radio and Television Hong Kong last year made a big deal about working together on the music event Hong Kong Gold Song Awards, which has already became the final shot. Reportedly the two stations while working together fought over the control rights. Each took its own stance and made life difficult for record companies. Finally after the show they split up. RTHK would resume the Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Awards in April. TVB and RTHK last year teamed up for the unprecedented Hong Kong Gold Song Awards 2021/2022, the principle of which was to lead the music scene with unity, bring together the power of music and write a new chapter for Hong Kong Gold Songs. Before hand a grand press conference was held at TVB's Television City in Tseung Kwan O, each record company and its singers were invited to attend. However, this year's Metro Radio Hit and Commercial Radio Ultimate Awards have already finished, but so far Hong Kong Gold Songs still has not made a sound. Actually it was already quietly "game over"! Reportedly last year the two stations in the planning process constantly had differences of opinions and the collaboration was rather unpleasant. The award show's reviews were not ideal either so they ended up being at odds! This year they decided to return to the original form, as the two stations would resume their own award shows. Reportedly RTHK's Top Ten Chinese Gold Song Awards would still plan to take place in April. The date has yet to be confirmed; TVB wanted to try something new and consider to work with the Greater Bay Area. However everything would await planning and arrangements. The two stations have yet to respond as of the article deadline. Winning the Hong Kong Gold Song Best Chinese Album last year, Hana Kuk Chi Kiu was asked about the rumor. She said, "Huh? I am not certain! Each unit, each organization would have their own way of holding award shows. I don't think there is any problem with that, the most important is to give the singers a report card and everyone is happy." She also said that every award would be just as important to her. "I am an obedient singer, if the company asks me to go I would definitely go, but for now I haven't heard when the TVB award show would be." With good performance in the just passed Hit Awards and Ultimate Awards, Vincy Chan (Wing Yi) said, "Each medium has its own uniqueness and style. I feel an award show is the summation of a year, where a group of singer friends can gather. I wish for a full bloom for music." Winning the "Global Chinese Ultimate Gold Song" with Jacky Cheung Hok Yau, Gin Lee who just joined Emperor Entertainment said, "Every singer has worked very hard on music, the award show is like a big party for singer friends to gather and share the fruits of their labor. The award is a bonus, the most important for everyone to be happy, with good work to share with everyone." Last year's Male Rookie gold prize winner Mike Tsang Pei Tat said that "splitting up" was a good thing. "This way singers would have the chance to attend two award shows, everyone would have another chance to be together. It's something to be happy about!" Jason Chan Pak Yu in order to support the music scene would attend whether he would win or not. He felt whether the two stations split up or not it would not matter. "If they do theirs separately, singers would have more chances to win! They did one year together, I feel that trying something new was a good thing. If they never tried it how would they know it wouldn't work? If they had a difference of opinions, that's good too! If everyone had no opinion or persistence, it wouldn't matter how the shows would be done and seeming take away the artistic element. If they want to split then split, if they want to be together then together!" TVB replied to media inquiry and stressed that its relationship with RTHK has been good. "This station and RTHK's collaboration relationship has always been good. As for less than factual speculation, this station has no comment." * (2023/01/15) The Best Actor Gordon Lam Ka Tung and Lokman Yeung@MIRROR starred new film MAD FATE (MING ONG) was selected for this year's Berlin Film Festival special screening segment. He was even happier to through this opportunity to bring his first collaboration with MakerVille to the world audience. * (2023/01/15) Known as the "Godfather of Music" and the Guinness World Records' "the world's most durable DJ" Uncle Ray (Reinaldo Maria Cordeiro, Kwok Lei Man) passed away on January 13rd at 5PM at the Hong Kong Chinese University hospital at age 98. His friends and family were by his side, with Joe Junior led a rendition of YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE to bid him farewell. Dedicated his life to the broadcasting and music scenes, Uncle Ray deeply believed that while life would come to an end, music was forever. Born in Hong Kong, Uncle Ray's parents were Portuguese. He was born in Hong Kong in 1924 and spoke fluent Cantonese. In 1949 he joined Radio Rediffusion as a copywriter, later he was promoted to disc jockey and host his first program PROGRESSIVE JAZZ. In 1960 he joined Radio Hong Kong, in 1964 he was assigned to study for 3 months at BBC in England. During the period he had the chance to interview the Beatles twice. In 1970 he began to host the longest running radio program in Hong Kong, ALL THE WAY WITH RAY. Aside from being a DJ, Uncle Ray also guest starred in SECURITY UNLIMITED (MOR DUN BO BIU), JOB HUNTER (SUT YIP SUN), ALL THE WRONG SPIES (NGOR OI YEH LOI HEUNG) and other films. Uncle Ray always dedicated him to recommend Western popular music and promote the domestic music scene developments. He interviewed internationally renowned music acts like the Beatles, Tony Bennett and Cliff Richard. He also helped many domestic singers and groups including Sam Hui Koon Kit, the Lotus, Teddy Robin Kwan and Joe Junior. Uncle Ray's radio program ran for decades, only due to the novel coronavirus pandemic he on December 2020 suspended hosting the radio program ALL THE WAY WITH RAY. Then in early May 2021 he announced that he would return to the live studio from May 10th to the 14th to host his final week of radio program. At the end of May he officially "seal the microphone" and retired. He also published his autobiography. In his "the journey of a thousand miles must come to an end" retirement announcement he mentioned, "When I was editing my autobiography, the novel coronavirus pandemic was at its peak. My friends all urged me against continuing to work. No matter how young I felt inside, I still had to admit that I was getting old. The risk was tremendous, so I could only listen to their warning and bid a temporary farewell to the live studio. I never thought that the halt would last 4 months. With the pandemic raging and no return date, I was able to take a long 'vacation' and had more time to consider the future." "Age is addition, and days are subtraction. Now I not only had to spend everyday to its fullest, I also cherish every second of every minute even more. What else I haven't done that I still wanted to do? After thinking back and forth, actually I don't have anything that only me or needed me to be done. I even gladly let others continue with my spirit, and keep what I wanted to do going. After countless days, I let go of the record, removed my headphones, turned off the microphone, left the live studio. I wouldn't have any special feeling, because I knew the next day I would return. Several months ago today's decision would truly be difficult to imagine.....I am retiring! Over 40 years after the last 'retirement', this professional life was longer than the first one and just as exciting. It was like living two lifetimes, what more could I ask for! Retirement would not mean stopping, I still would be with music. I deeply believe while life would come to an end, music was forever." Uncle Ray also said, "Radio would never die. If you have a good DJ who introduces good music, someone would always listen. I feel the songs that I have chosen are the best." Uncle Ray retired at the age of 96. In a show of appreciation for his contribution to the broadcasting and popular music world, singers including William So Wing Hong, Rowena Cortes, Teresa Carpio, Eliza Chan Kit Ling, Johnny Yip Chun Tong, Anthony Lun Wing Leung and others performed the Uncle Ray retirement concert in 2021. In July 2021 he also shot a commercial to urge seniors to get vaccinated for the government. Last year he was rumored to have suffered a stroke. Uncle Ray spent over 70 years in Hong Kong broadcasting. He received the MBE honor from Queen Elizabeth, the bronze and silver Bauhinia stars from the Special Administrative Region government, the Hong Kong Performing Art Academy fellowship and the Hong Kong Chinese University social science honorary doctorate degrees for his contributions to the community. Uncle Ray was never married. In his autobiography he mentioned two of the most important women in his life, including his first girlfriend and the late Mona Fong Yat Wa. He said that back then he and Fong Yat Wa got close and became lovers, but unfortunately it did not come to fruition. However they were still able to remain friends. In recent years Uncle Ray was unable to handle the physical rigors and retired, but music still kept him company in life. His record collections at home were his greatest joy. After Uncle Ray's passing, his family and friends formed a funeral committee that yesterday issued a statement to thank the Hong Kong Chinese University hospital's medical team for their attentive care for Uncle Ray for over a month, and sent their condolences to Uncle Ray's family. The funeral would be a Catholic service and more details would follow. Uncle Ray's godson Andy revealed that his godfather was hospitalized for pneumonia, so his passing was rather sudden. He originally planned to buy a bed for his godfather to recover at home, now he suddenly had to change the plan to a funeral. He was caught off guard and a lot still needed to be prepared. Sam Hui Koon Kit has known Uncle Ray for decades. He was heartbroken to learn of the passing of his good friend and posted a photo with Uncle Ray on social media. "Uncle Ray was a great friend and teacher in my life. I am very saddened over his passing. Uncle Ray's contribution to Hong Kong music was very important, an important figure in promoting Hong Kong music development. His passing was a great loss to Hong Kong music. My condolences to his family, and I wish Uncle in Heaven would continue his exciting music world." * (2023/01/15) Hins Cheung King Hin, Ivana Wong Yuen Chi, Jeffrey Ngai Chun Sun and others yesterday promoted their Lunar New Year film EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL (CHIU SUN GAING HAI GIP ON HA) at a shopping center. One of the actors Kaho Hung due to work did not arrive until the end of the event. They played Lunar New Year games with the live audience, wrote couplets to wish for box office success for the film. The film will officially open this week. Hin Jai admitted that he was nervous and excited because this was his first Lunar New Year film. With food props on her clothes, Wong Yuen Chi was made fun of as going to the Lunar New Year dinner. She said that whenever she ran into something joyous she would dress in a celebratory manner. Speaking of not having time off due to the film promote, Hin Jai and Wong Yuen Chi did not mind. They joked that they could meet on the Lunar 3rd to pay each other New Year visits and revealed that the cast has already planned to play mahjong online. Hin Jai and Ngai Chun Sun's nude scene has become the focus. Hin Jai said that he was not nervous. "All the focus would be on Ngai Chun Sun, I am only support for him." Speaking of this year's Lunar New Year has a lot of variety, Hin Jai wished that everyone's box office would rise and said that later he would shoot many courtroom, martial art videos to salute other Lunar New Year films. Hin Jai's online program has become a hit. He and Sam Lee Chan Sam's daughter Lucy Lee Yuen Yuen's conversation was sharp. Hin Jai said, "It was my first time babysitting, but Yuen Yuen is very quick witted. I had no way to come back. She is a character superstar, maybe because I am not her idol (MC) Cheung Tin Fu." Ngai Chun Sun was grateful to be able to participate in a Lunar New Year. Speaking of his rising popular leading to a fat year, he joked, "Indeed it has been back than in the past, the most important is to stay healthy and everyone happily promote together. In the Lunar New Year I want to get fat too, the family tradition is to have the Indonesian thousand layer cake for the New Year." As for having to appear in the buff with Hin Jai in the film, Ngai Chun Sun said that the story required it. For now he has not thought about releasing a photo book. First he would like to focus on his acting and singing skills. Ngai Chun Sun earlier reveled that he has thought about going on vacation, now the itinerary might change. "It's still being planned, I might not definitely go. If I can get time off and my girlfriend's schedule matches then I would go. Young people should work first, and work more while they are young." * (2023/01/13) Dayo Wong Tze Wa led Dee Ho Kai Wa and Renci Yeung Si Wing in the legal film A GUILTY CONSCIENCE (DUK SIT DAI JONG) to celebrate the Lunar New Year with movies fans. Last year Tze Wa's TABLE FOR SIX (FAN HEI GUNG SUM) was unable to be released on the actually Lunar New Year but in the end made HK$ 70 million at the box office. Returning again this year, Tze Wa said that although GUILTY would not sell laughter he believed that everyone after watching would spend the New Spring with renewed energy. Tze Wa had no box office pressure and joked that he was after artistic achievement. Last year TABLE's box office credit belonged to Peter Chan Charm Man, and this year's would be Dee's. "Just his fans alone already guaranteed HK$ 2 million! I would leave the New Year to him. My fans would watch from after the New Year to Buddha's Birthday!" Dee and Yeung Si Wing pointed out that they were the most alert with "Tze Wa God" treated the team. Both junior colleagues were asked about work with Tze Wa God, and both said that it was not difficult but very happy as well. How would Tze Wa rate his two junior colleagues? He joked, "They are very odd! Very passionate! Like they are going to school and competing for scores. In particular Wong Dan Nei even said, 'I want to die for acting', are you kidding? Very scary! Did they eat something wrong or catch novel coronavirus?" Tze Wa and Si Wing in the film played lawyers, Ah Dee played the legal executive. All were hired to form a legal team on the lawsuit. Their relationships were confusing and complicated. Tze Wa praised the script that the director and the writer Ng Wai Lun created was very solid. "The director really put in an effort, it truly isn't easy, in particular the courtroom scenes were very strict. It was about evidences and logics, so how would I dare to change the lines! For each line, he would grab the legal consultant and come up with it. If I changed it I would be afraid of getting sued. The director previously wrote two films ANITA and COLD WAR 2, both had decent box office. With the director bearing the responsibility, I could relax." Speaking of the most memorable scene, Tze Wa said that learning the Hokkienese was the most difficult. "From when I signed the film contract to the end of the production, I was studying like Lin Minchen with Cantonese. I memorized and memorized." In one shot to the end scenes in which he talked about the case, after the cameras stopped rolling director Ng Wai Lun went to the cast and started scolding. Tze Wa said, "I very rarely see this directory yell at people. He yelled at the jury, whether they knew how hard was the scene too shoot? Actually each juror wanted to show they were listening to me very attentively, they could not make any mistake. Otherwise it would not look good." Si Wing and Ah Dee also worried about performing poorly and dragging others down with them. Si Wing thus memorized her lines and admitted the stress was great. "Even when I was dreaming I would be delivering the lines form that courtroom scenes." Ah Dee said, "I constantly appear behind the cameras, but I still didn't dare to blink or breathe hard." In addition, Tze Wa, Dee, Gareth T. (Tong Ling Shan), Siu Hak would work on the film promotional song A GUILTY SONG (DUK SIT SUN KUK), which would hold a music video premiere Sunday. Dee, Gardner Tse Kwan Ho, Louise Wong Dan Nei and others would take a open air bus on a parade of Yau Ma Tei, Tsim Sha Tsui and Mongkok. Tze Wa and Ah Dee would perform the Hip Hop style promotional song, with music by Gareth T. (Tong Ling Shan) and lyrics by Siu Hak. Tze Wa said, "This time we had great music makers. The song quality is very high with a type of grievance behind it, the feeling of which is very suitable for this movie." Tze Wa before recording did not make any special preparation. "Everyone also knew that I am not a particularly great singer. The production was very accommodating to me. Ah Dee has a strong sense of music and dance beat. Climbing on Ah Dee' back, I can say it's safe." Ah Dee said, "This song is my duet with idol Tze Wa God. Siu Hak's lyrics truly are very able to express this movie. The first time I heard it I really didn't think that lyrics could be written like these. The first time when I heard the demo I thought it was very hard to sing. I tried to impersonate Gareth T.'s voice, but it was very hard. Pretending to sing like him actually was very awkward, in the end I still used my own voice in the interpretation." * (2023/01/13) The Hins Cheung King Hin and Ivana Wong Yuen Chi starred film EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL (CHIU SUN GAING HAI GIP ON HA) has been slated for a Lunar New Year release. It would also be Hin Jai's first turn as the Lunar New Year lead actor, he said that he originally thought that the Lunar New Year film would mainly be happy and make fun, bu the film had even more dark humor. In addition the Chin Stuntmen Association designed the large scale action scenes, firing real guns, explosions, staff wielding, combat and wires. Because during their performance they need to battle in person without any stunt double, Hin Jai said to Ivana, "I use bone against your flesh!" Ivana also replied in jest, "I truly answered my question, during the shoot everyone put up their professional "front" and didn't want to wear protection pads because we were afraid of looking very swollen. We thought we wouldn't be afraid of 'eating' several shots, but the next day I was all bruised while he was fine." Hin Jai chuckled, "My internal injuries eroded into the bones, yours were only superficial!" The film had many wire scenes, in one of which Hin Jai and Ivana full of love were raised to seven meters above ground. Unfortunately the director cut it. Ivana complained that several scenes of love were cut, leaving until the explosive and hardcore ones. She hoped that they would be seen as the post credit Easter Eggs. Hin Jai after seeing the rough cut praised Ivana for being able to be the Best Action Actor. "During the shoot my brain was full of Michelle Yeoh and Donnie Yen, the result was 'Ngau Chi Wan Michelle Yeoh' and 'Choi Hung Donnie Yen'." Ivana also joked, "I only thought of the medical cost, as I would have to file for workers' comp!" Hin Jai admitted that he was injured, but sometimes it was from him being "nosy" or careless. Fortunately the medical team was on the set throughout. The film also included new actors like Jeffrey Ngai, Angus Yeung Tin Yue, Kaho Hung and others. Aside from all the action, they also showed off their muscles for the benefit of the viewers. Ivana pointed out that the male actors took a lot of risks and got their upper body into great shape. In the light of day they still wore very little. Hin Jai said that they were each in shape in their own way, and in all the years he has known Ivana he hs never worn so little in front of her. "However not only me, Jeffrey is also delicious to Ivana!" Hin Jai revealed a spoiler that three of them ran naked in a blocked off two mu field. "People like I make sacrifices for art in order to win an award, we want to gain something from the film industry." Would he bare all? Hin Jai joked, "The knees are two points too, ultimately whatever should be there are there, whether they would be surprises or scares they would depend on the age level. To those who have not had much life experience they should be more surprised, but to those who have watched more Korean series they would be more scared. In their drama are both scares and comedy, we got everything in one shot." Ivana played a serious village chief. She had to change her usual high pitch voice. When she spoke she had to try to lower her key and act with different tones. She also pointed out that working in the blazing summer sun was indeed very tough, but she was grateful to Hin Jai for constantly treating and making the entire team very happy. "He straight up treated us to a buffet, and cafe egg waffles. He made us instantly forget all the hardship." Hin Jai said that this movie making experience truly benefit him. He felt that a group of "silly people" full of passion and dreams went to make a movie. He also got to try different action scenes and fulfilled many wishes at once. When the production wrapped he was still reluctant to part. [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Chung Fung d. Pleading not guilty, the defense attorneys soon turn on each other, as the defendants play the devil and idiot game. Meanwhile, heated debates emerge inside the jury room, where nine jurors grapple with the truth. Crafting a complex, multi-layered narrative with surprising twists and turns, Ho Cheuk-tin sets himself a formidable challenge in this directorial debut. [ BROADWAY CIRCUIT ] Adapted from a sensational 2013 family murder, Henry Cheung partnered up with his friend Angus Tong to murder and dismember his parents. In the courtroom, two veteran lawyers Wilson Ng and Carrie Yau were defending the pair pleading not guilty. The prosecutor Allen Chu suggests the murder was a calculated move for money. But the plot thickened when Ng and Yau began to present their case, and when Tong rebutted all accusations on his own. The truth becomes all the more elusive as the defendants played the role of 'genius' and 'idiot' in court. In the breakroom, discussions between the nine jury members spiraled into debates of right and wrong. MAMA'S AFFAIR AKA : K Fung Bo Lit : K Storm Rating : I Length : 127 mins.
