MISCELLANEOUS * (2022/10/26) The film TABLE FOR SIX (FAN HEI GUNG SUM) opened on September 7th. As of yesterday it already passed HK$ 70 million at the box office. TABLE FOR SIX's social media page posted the group photo of the cast with the audience during an audience appreciation event. "Indeed the power of unity truly is very strong. In less than 3 days, you fans actually bring us to a new height. We don't know how much higher we can go, who would have to pay?" Louis Cheung Kai Chung felt lucky, having run into many good characters on television series and a movie that made history. Friends of the Yeung family confirmed that Yeung Kwan has battled illness for over a year. In the past several months his prostate cancer has spread to his lungs. Finally around 2 AM on the 24th in the company of his wife Yu Fung Chi and their children, her passed away at his Cerritos home in Los Angeles County. Having won the 7th and the 11th Golden Horse Award Best Actor, he also starred in series like THE SHELL GAME, THE LEGEND OF WONDER LADY, BEHIND SILK CURTAINS. After 1990 he eased out of show business. Yeung Kwan's professionalism also won respect and admiration from Golden Horse Award Best Actress Gua Ah-Lei and Best Actor Simon Yam Tat Wa. Yeung Kwan was originally Yeung Pang Gui, one of the Hong Kong Shaw Film Studio's foundres. At age 15 he joined the film industry, in 1954 he starred in hs first film BLOOD-STAINED FLOWERS. In 1963 with THE STORY OF QIN XIANG-LIN as the cold hearted royal consort Chen Sai Mei he truly caught attentions. He also starred in famous movies like MANY ENCHATING NIGHTS and LADY IN THE TOWER. In the 1968 film STORM OVER THE YANG-TSE RIVER he played the special agent "Changjiang number 1"and won the 7th Golden Horse Award Best Actor. In 1973 with the film THE ESCAPE he again won the 11th Golden Horse Award Best Actor. He was also the first Golden Horse Award Best Actor who won with a kung fu film. Yeung Kwan and his wife Florence Yu Fung Chi in 1970 formed the Hong Kong Fong Ming Motion Picture Company and participated as a producer and a director. His film YOU CAN'T TELL HIM won the 9th Golden Horse Awards like Best Narrative Film; THE ESCAPE won the 11th Golden Horse Award Best Narrative Film. According to friends of Yeung Kwan, Yeung Kwan's wife Yu Fung Chi once was a film producer and they have been married for over 60 years; their daughter recently returned from the U.S. to Hong Kong to visit her bed ridden father. The family was very saddened by his passing. Yeung Kwan had countless work, including THE JILTED, WANG PAO CHUAN, MISTY RAIN. Among them his portrayal of the "Northern Con Man" Cheuk Yat Fu in the TVB series THE SHELL GAME also became one of the classic characters. Recently TVB also aired his series BEHIND SILK CURTAINS again. Having worked together on the film YOU CAN'T TELL HIM, the 78 year old Golden Horse Award Best Actress Gua Ah-Lei yesterday heard the news of Yeung Kwan's passing and was very upset. Having lived in Los Angeles for over 20 years, Gua Ah-Lei said that before the pandemic she and Yeung Kwan often met up. In her impression Big Brother Yeung was in great spirits, friendly, happy, and during the pandemic they also often spoke over the phone. "He was an actor I really worshipped." He worked with Director Li Han-Hsiang in Taiwan and was his mother's generation. Did he have any memory of him? Brother John said, "He was great friends with Li Han-Hsiang and (Derek) Yee Tung Sing's Papa. He often came to my home for dinner, drinks and chats. Its stars Cecilia Choi Sze Wan and Henick Chou Hon Ning along with producer Saville Chan Sum Yiu and director Anastasia Tsang Hin Ning flew to Tokyo to represent the film on the red carpet. This was Ceci's first red carpet event outside Hong Kong. She said due to the pandemic she has not traveled for two or three years, the feeling was both strange and familiar. She hoped through the film to have exchanges with viewers and filmmakers there and looked forward to be able to fun into her favorite actors. Chou Hon Ning admitted that he was both excited and nervous. "At first I chose to be an action actor because I hoped to have direction, because before getting into the business I have analyzed that actresses had many different types. How to make people recognize me among numerous actress would be very hard for a new actor; in the process I discovered that I really liked hero and fighting films. I thought girls who knew how to fight were pretty cool and that could become her own symbol. Thus in the first 3 years I kept working hard on studying kung fu; however being 26 at the time, the first time I learned to stretch, split, exercise and fight, everything I started from zero. It really was pretty rough." In order to do her job of "action actress" well, Yeung Chi Ching has worked hard on studying various martial arts. They included Wing Chun, Muay Thai kickboxing, Brazilian Jujitsu, Baguazhang, mixed martial arts, most recently she even studying karambit and hoped one day it would be useful in a movie. "Karambit is a small weapon, suitable for girls' use. Because guys and girls have a rather large difference in physical strength, girls must be smart about the technique; if they are able to beat guys with agility and small weapons, viewers would feel that would make more sense and would get more into the movie." Martial art training could strengthen the body, but ultimately fights would lead to injuries. Yeung Chi Ching could not escape wounds all over either, the most severe time took place when she made the 2019 film WE ARE LEGEND (YUP TEET LUNG). "At the time I was shooting a fight scene, because I rammed into the other person's kneecap I suffered a dislocation. Originally when I already was in a lot of hurt and short of breath, I knew my lungs were affected but I still toughed out the pain to continue the shoot. I didn't want to hinder the progress, but after a few more mid air kicks, I really couldn't breath. My entire body fell from mid air to the ground as I blacked out for several seconds; finally I spent 9 months before recovering. The injured area now is still lopsided. From then no I understood that I was just a person, not as tough as I imagined. I would die too, thus I learned to properly protect myself and when injured I would have to speak up." Speaking of Hong Kong action actress' future, Yeung Chi Ching felt that in comparison to the peak there is a successor gap now. However she was happy to see more and more artists with the intention to study martial arts in recent years, which was encouraging. If there would be even more action actresses, they would have more cohesion, even expanded, the market need would also thus increase. Aside from being an action actress, Yeung Chi Ching also worked hard on studying acting and singing. "Someone told me that only knowing how to fight and not to act would be quite a disadvantage. Those words gave me great motivation to learn. As an actor acting certainly comes first, then the career longevity would be even longer. Thus acting would be a major topic for me. However I wouldn't give up action films, because I really like it. Ultimately though I can very easily get hurt, as I grow older it would be affected. Thus now I would properly prepare myself, waiting for the chance to come and be able to properly grasp it." As for characters she would like to play, she said that she really wanted to try drama. She was interested in different genres like romance and tragedy; she would like the most the opportunity to play a character from youth to old age and be accepted by the audience. Louis Koo Tin Lok's WARRIORS OF FUTURE (MING YUT JIN GEI) and Dayo Wong Tze Wah's TABLE FOR SIX (FAN HEI GUNG SUM) even broke Hong Kong Chinese language film box office records. Even the Amos Why (Wong Ho Yin) directed low budget film FAR FAR AWAY (YUEN LO SHAN KA LA) also made over HK$ 10 million, but Director Wong does not feel that Hong Kong film is gradually seeing the light at the end of the tunnel because many Hong Kong films were released in the same period still have yet to be seen or heard from as they left cinemas. For example TALES FROM THE OCCULT (SUT HUNG HUNG GAN) and PRETTY HEART (SUM LUI MEI) both made less than HK$ 1 million. Recently several Hong Kong films have been thriving, very obviously because they had MIRROR members like Keung To, Edan Lui Cheuk On, or "Tze Wah God" Wong Tze Wah as its stars. As for WARRIORS OF FUTURE it spent HK$ 450 million so its over HK$ 7 million box office made sense. Amos Why said that he dared not to be optimistic about the situation, as only when Hong Kong is good would Hong Kong film be good. The soft power and the hard power would have to mutually help each other. Currently the only thing he could do was to improve himself. "When you improve yourself during the poor climate, when the atmosphere improves you would win even if you just lie there." The Amos Why directed, Jennifer Yu Heung Ying, Kaki Sham starred FAR FAR AWAY (LUEN LO SHAN KA LA) has been in release for over 3 months, and accumulated over HK$ 10 million at the box office. The performance could not be compared to WARRIORS OF FUTURE or TABLE FOR SIX, but FAR only had a HK$ 2.7 million production budget and made HK$ 10 million. Its ratio actually has been better than the two aforementioned films. Amos Why did not dare to say that and would not calculate as such, but for individual show numbers, FAR truly has been very sharp. He said, "This film from only getting 60 shows at its opening to adding shows to its peak of 170 shows. On the other hand WARRIORS OF FUTURE from the opening 600 show and gradually declined." Amos Hwy disagreed that FAR FAR AWAY was cutting a tree with a small dagger, citing that after all the expenses like cinema cost, marketing cost and distribution cost the film only made a little profit.
