MISCELLANEOUS * (2022/07/20) The Emperor Motion Picture JUST 1 DAY (CUP NGOR 1 TIN) was based on Erica Li Man's novel of the same name. She would direct for the first time. The cast included Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin, Wong Cho Nam, Kathy Yuen (Tong Yee), Eric Kwok Wai Leung, and Michelle Wai Sze Man guest starred. Ah Sa admitted that she has looked forward to it for a very long time already. "The film is full of Hong Kong nostalgia, a movie with a lot of 'homecoming' feeling!" The film would be a love story that would be filled with Hong Kong collective memories, with Choi Cheuk Yin and Wong Cho Nam tailored this one day only date. They brought the audience to discover some neglected scenery, people and locations anew, and found that long missing intimacy through the camp life. Ah Sa believed that the film would not only bring back everyone's beautiful memories but also make them cherish Hong Kong as the place they grew up in. "For this production, we really went all over Hong Kong. Aside from landmarks like City Hall and the Star Ferry Pier, Wong Cho Nam once lived in Sham Shui Po. We went there on location too. Old Main Street Aberdeen was where I grew up, which coincidentally was one of the location as well!" Cho Nam before the performance was full prepared. He explained, "The so called "long awaited" just refers to waiting for a chance. Over the years I mainly entertain the general public. When would people see my romantic side? Finally, welcome to this film!" Cho Nam revealed that when his wife Leanna Li Yanan read the script, she immediately screamed that the male lead -- city sketch artist Ma Choi Hak was just like her husband in secondary school! Cho Nam added, "When I was little, I really liked drawing, music, and I have always been stubborn in love. When I love someone, after many years I still would love them as much. I may look happy on the outside, but I don't tell outsiders about the hurt inside. Papa was gone at the same time. In these several areas I really resemble the character, so that explains why I would fall in love at first sight with this script and very quickly was moved by it!" Working with Ah Sa again, Cho Nam described that starting from discussing the script, their mutual trust level was already extremely high. "Ah Sa has made many romantic films and has certain senses, especially this is a script that starts with a girl, so I have to listen to Ah Sa's ideas about it. Then I observed from the sidelines. Basically in the film she was a fairy tale character, how would she set off spark with this 100% romantic character of mine. This feeling I have to trust Ah Sa to, everyone would speak up without any reservation. Then we studied different possibilities. Only then would the movie would be entertaining!" * (2022/07/20) The WARRIORS OF FUTURE (MING YUT JIN GEI)'s latest production special was released yesterday. The largest scale science fiction film in Hong Kong history cost HK$ 450 million to make. Completely produced by One Cool Film, Louis Koo Tin Lok was the producer and the star. Other stars included Sean Lau Ching Wan, Carina Lau Ka Ling, Philip Keung Ho Man, Tse Kwan Ho, and the director was the three time Hong Kong Film Award Best Visual Effects award winner Ng Yuen Fai. The film would open on the 25th next month in Hong Kong. Koo Tin Lok earlier at the 40th Hong Kong Film Awards also promoted the film many times. * (2022/07/20) The TVB and Radio Hong Kong jointly organized Hong Kong Gold Song Awards 2021/2022 would take place on July 24th. Yesterday at the press conference, the Broadcast Authority chief and TVB Music Group Limited CEO Ho Lai Chuen together unveiled the first "Hong Kong Gold Song Honorary Award" to be the "Asian popular music godfather" Chris Babida (Pau Pei Tat). He said that the award gave him even greater confidence, his music was not passed its prime and he still had fire inside. New generation singers Oscar Tao Yuk Lun, Sherman Poon Ching Man, Rock Ho Chun Lok, Kaitlyn Lam Kwan Lin, Felix Lam Chi Lok, Aeren Man Hoi Ting, Alex Kwong Sing Yu, DEZ Yu Chung Yu and Leanne Li Yin also saluted the elder and hoped to be able to sing his work. The 72 year old Pau Pei Tat has been a music director, producer, song writer, song arranger, conductor and performer all in one. Starting in the late 70's he created countless classic hits in the Greater Chinese Region and remained renowned for 50 years. He said that he was very touched to receive the award, but believe the younger generation now does not know him too well. Actually he has been making music for a very long time. He said, "I still maintain the fire, this fire came from Papa. He told me if I want to make music then I could do it properly, do anything and everything, so my fire is still burning!" Pau Bei Tat joked that he was already working when Cantonese songs first became popular, which seemed as far as the Stone Age. In the 70s when Joseph Koo Ka Fai was making music he was there too, then in the 80s he was even the music director who worked the most concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum, able to work with many good friends and very exciting artists like Roman Tam (Law Man), Sam Hui Koon Kit, Alan Tam Wing Lun, Jenny Tseng (Yun Nei), Anita Mui Yim Fong, Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing and Paula Tsui Siu Fung. The music scene was very cheerful; in the 80's much of Hong Kong popular music was adapted and song writers were few. He had many dreams, as he thought about working on musical, ballet, film, classical music. In the early 90s he went to Taiwan and worked with many artists. He tried musical. In 1997 he was named the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region founding ceremony music director. Pau Pei Tat then went to work in Beijing. "I feel very honored and proud, to be able to create the them song for the 2008 Beijing Olympic torch relay. You can win 4, 5, 6 Oscars, but you only get to write the Olympic song once!" Pau Pei Tat said that now that he has returned to Hong Kong, he was not finished yet. He was not over the hill and was still learning a lot of things. "In particular music isn't simple, it's very challenging. My fire still remains, so this time I return to Hong Kong in hopes of still being able to lend a helping hand, whatever I can do I will do!" STAR ACADEMY graduates Poon Ching Man, Lam Kwan Lin, Man Hoi Ting sid that they have listened to classic hits that Pau Pei Tat created. Man Hoi Ting said that since she has participated in music competitions, she would notice the song arrangement. Mr. Pau's song arrangement was very alluring. She really wanted Mr. Pau to write a fast song for her. While modern pop songs are heavy in electronic music, the golden age pop songs mostly were real instrument style. Now Mr. Pau has returned to Hong Kong music, she had a lot of ideas as the generation's new comers would be able to work with him; Lam Kwan Lin would like Mr. Pau to create a song with rhythm for her. She especially liked Jeffrey Chang's LOVE LIKE THE TIDE with a little R and B feel; Poon Man Ching would like Mr. Pau to write a little more retro Jazz music for her, because many popular old songs had that flavor. As soon as you heard it you would be able to relate to it and bring back memories. Yesterday was the first anniversary of the first STAR ACADEMY. Three graduates still missed the finale night very much and felt that they have all grown up. Lam Kwan Lin joked, "Looking back at everyone, we have grown a little and lost a little baby fat!" However Poon Ching Man said that she would work on a music video for her new song soon. She wanted to appear a little thinner on camera and her goal was to drop 3 kg to 43 kg; Man Hoi Ting also had to work on a music video for a new song and even proclaimed that she had to work hard to lose weight. "Earlier when I went to Malaysia for a week. Because I ate too much, I gained 5 kg. Looking back at when I was competing last year, I really am much more bloated. My goal is to drop back down to the competition weight of 51 kg!" * (2022/07/20) Cya Liu with LIMBO (JI CHI) won the 40th Hong Kong Film Award Best Actress. Cya is currently the female lead in the Andy Lau Tak Wa produced film I DID IT MY WAY (CHIM HUNG), which is heating up in production. The professional Cya immediately returned to work on the day after receiving the award. The cast and the crew sent well wishes to this fresh out of the oven Best Actress. When Cya returned to the team to complete the make up test, Peng Yu-yan brought out the cake and with Lau Tak Wa and Yam Tat Wa gave her a surprise celebration. Everyone applauded for her. THE I DID IT MY WAY TEAM CONGRATULATES HONG KONG FILM AWARD BEST ACTRESS CYA LIU was written on the whiskey bottle shaped cake, which was quite a surprise for her. Lau Tak Wa said, "Congratulations! Congratulations! You deserve it." and wished that I DID IT MY WAY would be the next movie Cya Liu would win an award with. Peng Yu-Yan brought out the cake and sang the birthday song, and pretended to cover Cya's face with the cake. Finally he event gave Cya a congratulatory hug. Cya while cutting this whiskey bottle shaped cake smiled and said that after receiving the award she received well wishes and alcohol the most that night. "This is the first celebration cake, earlier I didn't get any cake and all I got was liquor. Today the cake I got also looks like liquor, I was very surprised." * (2022/07/19) Director Benny Chan Muk Sing's final film RAGING FIRE (NO FOR) not only performed well at the box office, but also received many film industry award recognition! In the just past Hong Kong Film award the film won 4 major awards. After learning that Benny received the Best Director award, both lead actors Donnie Yen Chi Tan and Nicholas Tse Ting Fung had endless lament. Ting Fung even thanked Director Chan for his contribution to the film industry over the years! The Benny directed Emperor Motion Picture RAGING FIRE landed the "heroic duo" Nicholas Tse Ting Fung and Donnie Yen Chi Tan as its stars. Since its production to release it won the attention and word of mouth form viewers. Its Mainland box office reached 1.3 billion yuan RMB. Aside from critical and commercial success, it also won the industry recognition. After winning the 28th Hong Kong Film Critic Society Best Director and Recommended Film, and the 2021 Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild Award Best Film and Best Director, two nights ago at the 40th Hong Kong Film Award it even swept up 4 awards in one breath, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Action Choreography and Best Editing. When Benny was announced as the Best Director recipient, the guest presenter read the thank you speech from Mrs. Chan as the entire audience rose to the foot to salute Benny in a touching scene. The lead actor Donnie Yen Chi Tan was busy at work in the Mainland and unable to return to Hong Kong to attend the event. However when he learned about RAGING FIRE's performance, he could not help but sentimentally said, "Again I am reminded of working with Chan Muk sing, the feeling really is very mixed. I regret that he was unable to personally accept this honor that he truly deserved." The other lead actor Ting Fung after finishing his new film CUSTOMS FRONTLINE (HOIT GUAN JIN SIN) already returned to the Mainland to keep working, thus was unable to attend the event. As for RAGING FIRE's voter recognition, he was pleased but full of sentiment. "RAGING FIRE won 4 major awards including Best Film and Best Director", of course it's extra sentimental because Benny already left us. However I believe that he definitely would know in Heaven, again thank you for giving us so many exciting movies over the years!" As for Papa Patrick Tse Yin's Best Actor award for TIME, Ting Fung naturally was exceptionally happy. Aside from being happy for Papa on social media, yesterday he again responded, "Daddy won Best Actor, I of course am very happy for him. Thank you to all the fans for their love and support over the past 60 some years. Two years ago he received the Lifetime Achievement Award, this year he again won the Best Actor. I believe he is very happy!" * (2022/07/19) RAGING FIRE (NO FOR) at the Hong Kong Film Awards won 4 major films. Boss Albert Yeung Sau Sing admitted that he was elated. "First I have to thank the Hong Kong Film Awards and the voters for their recognition. RAGING FIRE showcased Hong Kong action film's unique quality, as the film's investor I wanted to pass on and spread this advantage. Last year when RAGING FIRE opened, in Hong Kong it made over HK$ 26 million. In the Mainland it even made over 1.3 billion yuan RMB. This time with the Hong Kong Film Awards' full recognition, we at Emperor Motion Pictures felt very honored." He also made a special mention, "The late Chan Muk Sing, two lead actors (Donnie) Yen Chi Tan, (Nicholas Tse) Ting Fung and the on and off camera team created such a popular film, the creative team's credit truly shouldn't be overlooked. This team could never be repeated again. Yen Chi Tan as the film's action director remained solid in his action designs while not forgetting to innovate; Ting Fung's acting originally has already been recognized. This time it has even been elevated and solidified his action film status. Unfortunately Yen Chi Tan is in Hengdian for a movie, and Ting Fung just happened to have to fly to Beijing for a food program. I regret very much that the entire creative team was unable to attend in person and share the joy. In addition, I have to give special thanks to Mr. (John) Sham Kin Fun. He lent a helping hand and finished some of the post production completely according to the director's intent, so we were able to smoothly bring the story in its original and authentic form to the audience." The late Director Chan received the Hong Kong Film Award Best Director, Yeung Sau Sing sentimentally said, "I knew Chan Muk Sing for over 30 years, for many years we trusted each other and worked together countless times. He also was one of the director we Emperor Motion Pictures worked with the most. He was full of passion for work, responsible as a person, a humble gentleman who was full of talent. I worked with him on 6 films. Each one's box office and word of mouth had good performance. Before the film's official release, I had a lot of confidence in his final film RAGING FIRE. Everyone after watching it would definitely give it good reviews, now the Hong Kong Film Awards again recognized this old friend of mine's talent. This honor completed his life. At the moment when the event announced him as the Best Director for RAGING FIRE, my feeling was mixed. The award brought back a lot of my memories of him and reminded me how much I missed him. The Hong Kong film industry lost a hard working master class director of culture and substance, which truly was regrettable." In addition, the company's artist Cya Liu with her first nomination received the Best Actress. Yeung Sau Sing said, "I have always paid attention to Cya Liu. In 2020 Fok Man Hei (Mani) after meeting her recommended her to me and planned to sign her, at the time Mani asked me for my opinion. I agreed, but before signing her I never met her. At the time many film companies wanted to sign her, but because she trusted Mani and believed in the Emperor brand even more, finally we overcame all the hardship and signed her. The entire process wasn't easy at all." * (2022/07/19) The fresh out of the oven Best Actress Cya Liu with the film LIMBO (JI CHI) won at her first try, winning the Film Critic Society Award and the Film Directors' Guild Best Actress to become a triple crown Best Actress! She felt the award was a miracle. "I Cya Liu am an ordinary woman, but because of this movie, my character, everything brought this award to me." She also said that this movie made her feel for the first time that she was a real actor. "If not for this movie, these 5 years have been hopeless. I always thought about switching jobs." She once wanted to win Best Actress before age 30. Although it came a little late, her dream was ultimately fulfilled. She said, "Many people said I have no natural talent, but I believe with hard work I definitely can head to where my dream is." She also hoped that in the future to be able to work with actors who love movies and never worked with her before. She would continue to work hard, hope to have even more good roles offered to her. She would be willing to contribute even more for her characters. Cya Liu after winning the award sent a text to her boss Albert Yeung Sau Sing immediately. The boss said that he would hold a celebration for her. Busy with her new film, she worked as usual yesterday. After the production would wrap up at the end of the month, she would head to the Mainland for the costume film SAKRA (TIN LUNG BAK BO). The film company felt that she was an asset worth more than her price so it has already adjusted her salary. Before leaving Hong Kong she would treat her Emperor colleagues to a big feast and thank them for taking care of her over these 2 years. He continued, "After signing the contract, Cya Liu came to Hong Kong for the first time in mid March to make a movie, CUSTOMS FRONTLINE (HOI GUAN JIN SIN). At that time we met for the first time. I remember we met at a hotel coffee shop. My impression of her was a tough actress with a lot of character and demanded very much of herself. After finishing CUSTOMS FRONTLINE on the first day she immediately called me and said that she performed very poorly today, she did not do well and was very worried. When I asked her why, she said that because she still has not adjusted to the Hong Kong production pace. The director was too fast, but she was still warming up so she was not able to do her best. So she wanted to ask me to help find a Hong Kong instructor. That night I asked (Kearen) Pang Sau Wai, and they clicked right away. Pang Sau Wai spent one or two weeks and studied the script with Cya Liu everyday, increased her confidence and taught her how to adjust to the Hong Kong production pace." As for the rumors that Cya Liu has received countless offers, Yeung Sau Sing admitted, "That's right! Right now she is making a movie, with (Andy) Lau Tak Wa, (Gordon) Lam Ka Tung and (Eddie) Peng Yu-Yan. Cya Liu is playing Lau Tak Wa's wife. In addition as far as I know, Director (Dante) Lam Chiu Yin is planning a new film and want to ask Cya Liu to be in it. The details haven't been confirmed yet as we are still in communication. Actually after we signed Cya Liu, many film companies and directors kept asking about her schedule. All of these happened before she won Best Actress, proving that she is getting a lot of attention in the industry. * (2022/07/19) Under the pandemic the 40th Hong Kong Film Award finally took place two nights ago, with the 85 year old Sei Gor Patrick Tse Yin with TIME (SAT CHOOK GOR WONG FUNG) and LIMBO (JI CHI)'s Cya Liu both won with their first nomination. Best Director went to the late Benny Chan Muk Sing, his final film even became the Best Film. The result was rather complete. At the celebration, Fish Liew Chi Yu was revealed to have lifted up Louis Koo Tin Lok after getting drunk, but she had no impression of it. Sei Gor during the acceptance needed help from Gordon Lam Ka Tung, which made fans concern about his health condition. His son Nicholas Tse Ting Fung and daughter Jennifer Tse Ting Ting on social media congratulated their father on his Best Actor award and thanked fans for their love for Tse Yin! After the 40th Hong Kong Film Awards, ANITA, ZERO TO HERO (MAMA JI SUN KEI SIU JI) and DRIFTING (SHOOK SHUI PIU LAU)'s production teams still held celebrations. Although he lost the Best Supporting Actor award to the 17 year old new actor Mason Fung Ho Yeung, Koo Tin Lok still came to support him. In addition So Wa Wai and So Mama also attended the celebration. Instead Best Actress nominee Sandra Ng Kwan Yu and Best Supporting Actress nominee Loletta Lee Lai Chun did not appear at the celebration. ANITA at the Hong Kong Film Awards swept up 5 awards including Best Supporting Actress, Best New Performer, Best Visual Effects, Bes Costume and Make Up Design, Best Sound Design to become this year's movie with the most awards. At the celebration, the fresh out of the oven Best Supporting Actress Fish Liew Chi Yu and Best New Performer Louise Wong Dan Nei were excited and even posed with their statues with Louis Koo Tin Lok. Liew Chi Yu happily said that the award was very heavy. Liew Chi Yu after receiving the award was still emotional, feeling that 10 years after coming to Hong Kong from Malaysia, Chi Yu expressed her joy and planned to celebrate hard. "Earlier I took 3 hang over pills, but the driver said they were useless and told me to eat butter. I hope tomorrow won't be too bad. (Have you been drunk before?) Several years ago on my birthday I got drunk. The next day my colleagues told me that after I got drunk I lifted up Koo Tin Lok, but I have no impression of it at all. Luckily he wasn't mad!" After she lifted up boss Goo Jai, now the boss would lift her up? Liew Chi Yu only laughed and did not know how to respond. After winning the award she immediately had video chats with her parents, broke down and told them the good news. This time would she be able to return home to see her parents with her success? She said, "I too really want to go home to see my family, but I still have to work after. I don't want to waste too much time on quarantine either." Wong Dan Nei said that she would not be disappointed about the Best Actress defeat. "First I shouldn't think as grand as Best Actress, as a new comer I already won an award with my first movie. It is already a very beautiful dream, not to mention a huge encouragement. The journey still has a long way to go in the future, I would continue to charge ahead." Wong Dan Nei's husband Sheldon Lo Hau Yung attended the event and the celebration with her. The crowd wanted them to kiss, but he was only willing to pretend. Wong Dan Nei joked that he was shy. She also said that after the award her phone already blew up with messages. Later she would reply to each one and would celebrate with her family. The only 17 year old new actor Mason Fung Ho Yeung won Best Supporting Actor. He attended the celebration with his mother and chatted nonstop with Koo Tin Lok. Goo Jai posed for photos with Fung Ho Yeung and Fung Mama as encouragement. Fung Ho Yeung joked, "I am the newest one, I thought getting the award would be impossible. I also took the chance to kiss up and said I am looking forward to seeing his WARRIORS OF FUTURE (MING YUT JIN GEI). He really resembles the Terminator." Would he sign with Goo Jai? He said that he has not discussed this issue. He has not signed with any company currently. earlier at school he was training in children's phonetics. Fung Ho Yeung pointed out that he was out of school and chose to be an actor. "I am not encouraging dropping out of school, I don't have any big goal either. Only that I have Asperger's Syndrome, I would live in my own world. So since childhood Mommy would train me. I am the type that either I don't do something, if I do I would do my best. As an actor I would be able to strengthen observation and communication skills with others, enabling me to go forward. Of course I have also increased my own value, I have been learning horseback riding and singing!" Earlier injured on the set, Gordon Lam Ka Tung two nights ago recovered in time to attend the ceremony and accompanied the TIME Best Actor Patrick Tse Yin to the stage. He urged Tse to follow the doctor's order and wear the mask properly, and even helped him with it. His attentive gesture received online praises as "The Warmest Actor". When Sei Gor went on the stage he was less than steady, when he removed his mask his lips appeared to be sagging. He was drastically different from his past active and lively ways. Due to multiple recent rumors of him suffering a stroke, his health condition has worried fans. As Nicholas Tse Ting Fung congratulated "Daddy" on social media, many online were curious when Tse's own children were not present to support their old man? Some even asked Ting Fung to spend more time with Papa. Actually Tse Yin's son Tse Ting Fung was working in the Mainland and unable to attend the Hong Kong Film Awards in person. Tse Yin's daughter Jennifer Tse Ting Ting also posted on social media, "Papa, you finally won. Congratulations! You completely deserve this award. I am proud of you, you are a legend!" In addition, after 40 years in the business and 6 Best Actor nominations, Francis Ng Chun Yu again missed out of the award. His son posted on social media and took jabs at Papa. "Congratulations No Steamed Fish (sounds like Ng Chun Yu in Putonghua) on the Best Pacer and the Best Alternative Awards." Chun Yu's office thanked everyone for their support. "The filmmakers and film and television people are still full of confidence, we look forward to be able to create even better work for everyone later." The ViuTV live broadcast of the 40th Hong Kong Film award two nights ago had a 10.4 rating (around 680,000 viewers). * (2022/07/19) Stephen Fung Tak Lun just returned from the U.S. to be the guest presenter at the 40th Hong Kong Film Awards two nights ago. He and Derek Tsang Kwok Cheung presented Best New Director and Best Cinematography awards. Stephen has always been very supportive of the Hong Kong Film Awards. This year he even flew back from the U.S. to attend. Two days ago he completed his quarantine and two nights ago attended the event. He said, "I am very honored, Hong Kong film is an important Hong Kong cultural heritage, so I am very supportive." As for the current Hong Kong film productions, Stephen felt that now is the age when creative comes before production. He said, "The market faces a lot of difficulties now. I believe creativity is greater than production, as no genre or actor could guarantee success. So we should make more attempts with subjects." With all the new comers now, Stephen said that he just got back to Hong Kong and would take the chance to pay more attention to them. "I just got back to Hong Kong, I need a tutorial first." His film work schedule has been jam packed. Stephen said, "At the end of the year I would work on a Hong Kong film, next year I would direct one. Aside from Hong Kong films I am preparing for a U.S. series, which may start production at the end of next year." Fung Tak Lun and Derek Tsang Kwok Cheung presented "Best New Director" and "Best Cinematography". They showed their humorous sides. Tsang Kwok Cheung said that he was two sized larger after getting married and asked how Fung Tak Lun stayed so it? He said, "Is it because your Pa (Eric Tsang Chi Wai)'s gene is too strong?" Tsang Kwok Cheung seriously said, "I think it is, actually getting taller was already quite a feat." Fung Tak Lun followed, "Tonight the broadcast is on ViuTV, should we not talk about your Pa?" Tsang Kwok Cheung said, "It doesn't matter, you can say anything on ViuTV!" Karena Lam Ka Yan yesterday attended an event at Central. her Taiwan film AMERICAN GIRL won the Hong Kong Film Award Best Asian Chinese Language Film. Lam Ka Yan said that she went to bed very early two nights ago so he missed the Hong Kong Film Awards. Yesterday morning when she got the good news she was very happy and happy for the director and team. She said, "I worked on this film in 2020. At the time everyone didn't know much about the pandemic. With so many unknowns, I felt it might be my final film. Today I want to honestly and sincerely speak from the heart, thank you the Hong Kong Film Award for giving me this valuable trophy!" He also humbly said, "I really don't feel I have made any achievement, I only feel I have been lucky my whole life. The Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Hui Koon Man in his speech spoke of his three younger brothers and thanked them for their silent support. Also my wife Cheng Kit Ying. She is the source of all my comedy inspiration. I also want to thank my two children and two grandchildren." Hui Koon Man said in an interview backstage, Hong Kong people still had fire inside them and Hong Kong still had a lot of opportunities. After the award, he wanted to celebrate with his children and the grandchildren the most. He always considered his children and grandchildren as his brain trust and consultant. When asked about how he felt, Tse Yin said, "I don't know what to say. I just know to pick this thing up." Finally Sei Gor only said thank you and put his hands together. This year the film industry had many newcomers. 17 year old newcomer Mason Fung Ho Yeung with the film ZERO TO HERO (MAMA DIK SUN KEI SIU JI) won the Best Supporting Actor. Portraying So Wa Wai in his adolescence, Yeung Yeung defeated a group of elders including Louis Koo Tin Lok, Lam Suet, Tse Kwan Ho and Will Or Wai Lam for his first award. When he accepted the award from the hands of Elaine Jin and Stanley Kwan Kam Peng, he got choked up and said that the award was very heavy. He was moved to tears as he thanked his parents on the stage. "Looking back at your support for me, I really feel I don't deserve it. I hope from now on I would use my greatest effort to play every role well, as a show of appreciation for you. I hope one day I would be able to very confidently say I am an outstanding actor." Yeung Yeung later said that he forgot to thank So Wa Wai and So Mama for their determination, without them this movie would not be made. They were the pride of Hong Kong. He said that although he has Asperger syndrome and was considered lacking emotions and sympathy, a year ago he already decided to become an actor. He had a lot of experience from growing up and from now on would try to be a good actor. Best Supporting Actress went to Fish Liew Chi Yu, who had two nominations, for the film ANITA. when she accepted the award she broke into tears of joy. As a Malaysian she tearfully thanked in Putonghua her family for their unconditional support. "This would be my 10th full year in Hong Kong. I went from not knowing anyone at all, to now looking in the audience at many of my friends, colleagues and directors I have worked with. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to make movies here. I am very honored that my dream has come true in Hong Kong. Thank you for including me in the fun." She joked that she believed she would be excited for 1 month and planned to take her entire company on a boat party. "I want to call my family the most, I believe they are crying very hard. I have been away from the family for a long time. Papa says that tonight he would book a room to watch the Hong Kong Film Awards with his co-workers." When she was interviewed backstage, Mother Liew suddenly called. She cried as she spoke on the phone. Would she ask for a raise? She immediately turned and asked her manager, and said that she wanted to have large scale productions to continue to make her offers. She would like to make a costume wuxia film the most. Her co-star and best Actress nominee Louise Wong Dan Nei with the film ANITA won Best New Performer. She was in tears when she accepted the award, and joked that "I am very ugly when I cry." "Everyone's hard work made this award happen for me. Thank you to my family, you are my strongest support. I hope to make even more good movies in this place where I grew up and in the industry that I like." When she heard her name she was dizzy, seeing stars and had difficulty breathing, but luckily she was able to say what she wanted to say on the stage. Then she again thanked Anita Mui Yim Fong. Speaking of not thanking her husband on the stage, she explained that was because he was family. She said that she was very lucky to have the love and the acceptance of her family. She could bravely challenge anything and felt that the modern women would need to jump out and accept different challenges. The 33 year old Cya Liu with her heart wrenching performance in LIMBO (CHI JI) defeated strong competition from good actors like Gong Li and won Best Actress with her first nomination. Actually Cya Liu came from the Mainland in March and stayed until now, mainly because she wanted to witness this event in person. When she accepted the award she appeared very calm. First she said in Cantonese that her heart was beating very fast and thank the Hong Kong Film Awards and the team. Then she switched to Putonghua and said, "I am very nervous, thank you Hong Kong for giving me this opportunity so I get to make movies many times in Hong Kong. Film has given me a ray of light, I hope in the future I would have even more opportunity to go even further with film. I didn't cry!" Cya Liu thanked her boss Yeung Sau Sing, and texted him with the news as soon as she won. However he would not ask the boss for a home. She admitted tht when she made the film she thought about winning an award. She contributed a lot to the character and believed many people could see that. She pointed out that LIMBO was a meaningful movie. When she was hopeless, wanted to quit acting and switch jobs she would think of this movie. She thanked director Soi Cheang Pou Soi for his trust and experiencing the first recognition in her life. It was a miracle. In addition, she felt disappointed for Ka Tung's Best Actor defeat. She was the most disappointed for Cheang Pou Soi. As for her next goal, Cya Liu said that her first goal was the New Performer Award, the second goal was the Best Actress Award before age 30. Although she is already in her 30s, the dream came true late but still did. Best New Director went to HAND-ROLLED CIGARETTE (SAU GUEN YIN)'s Chan Kin Long. In his speech he thanked Lam Ka Tung because he took the role for zero salary. In addition, the program began with official award presentations to the 39th Hong Kong Film Award winners. Eman Lam, Cheung Tat Ming, Norris Wong Yi Lam and others all spoke on the stage. The previous Best Director winner Derek Tsang Kwok Cheung even described their situation as being "orphans". As he gave the speech, the "tricky mic stand" suddenly descended and made the scene a little awkward. Luckily several seconds later it rose again and he continued with his speech. The previous Best Original Film Song went to FLY from BETTER DAYS. Its performer Yoyo Sham Ning Yi accepted the award and thanked on multiple occasions the late song writer and singer Ellen Loo Hoi Tung. The event also arranged for Wong Dan Nei and Leung Chung Hang to perform YEARS FLOW LIKE WATER in memory of filmmakers who passed away in the past two years. They included Chor Yuen, Kenneth Tsang Kong, Lee Heung Kam, Ng Man Tat, Liu Kai Chi, Alex Law Ka Yui, Lo Hung, Leung Kit Wa, Tsang Wai Kuen, Chan Ho Kau and Yau Sing Po. Director and screenwriter Law Kai Yui's love Director Mabel Cheung Yuen Ting yesterday made an appearance and was the "Best Screenplay" guest presenter with John Chong Ching. She was dressed in black and had a smile on her face as she often waved to the audience. The red carpet was just as star studded. Attending artists included Patrick Tse Yin, Gordon Lam Ka Tung, Kelly Chen Wai Lam, Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Sandra Ng Kwan Yu, Derek Tsang Kwok Cheung, Venus Wong Man Yik, Nina Paw Hee Ching, Hanna Chan, Hedwig Tam Sin Yin, Chrissie Chau Sau Na, Louise Wong Dan Nei and Minchen Lin. Best Actress nominee Chau Sau Na wore a black and transparent evening gown and 7 figure in diamond accessories. Because of all the transparent spots in the dress, Chau Sau Na was very careful with every step she took. Wong Dan Nei who was also dressed in black joked that she did not warn her husband Sheldon Lo Hau Yung in advance, but after her husband saw her he called her pretty. Best Actor favorite Lam Ka Tung made his first appearance since his on set accident and rumored to be unable to attend due to the injury. On the red carpet he appeared rather well, and took care of his Best Actor competition Tse Yin. He said that because Sei Gor said if Lam Ka Tung could not come then he would not come either, so he had to leave the hospital. He jokingly thanks to the heavy hands of the medical staff he was able to rapidly recovery. He said that he was already fine. "I only stayed at the hospital for a few days, because I want to be a little more careful. I was a little dizzy from the medication, but I am much better. I didn't have any fracture, I really have no problem. I hope to get back to work soon. I would work on a lot less action scenes. Seeing how nervous everyone has been, my stress level has gone up too." Tsang Kwok Cheung and his wife Wong Man Yik made their first public appearance since divorce rumors surfaced. Tsang Kwok Cheung joked that he approved of his wife's sexy appearance, "but I would tell her to button up!" Tsang Kwok Cheung revealed that he just returned from England and completed his quarantine. He was very happy to be able to attend the Hong Kong Film Award. The 39th Hong Kong Film Award Best Director Tsang Kwok Cheung admitted that not being able to accept the award at a physical award show then was somewhat regrettable, but the event has been great as it gave him an opportunity to accept the award on stage and give his speech. Has he not seen his wife in a very long time? He said that he returned in March once and they got together. He also said that since getting married due to the pandemic they still have not been able to go on their honeymoon. Finally they would be able to go to Europe for a month long honeymoon. Would he take the chance to try for a baby? He shook his head and waved his hand in opposition. Nick Cheung Ka Fai last night was the Best Actor guest presenter. Just returned from the Mainland over a week, he was asked about his wife Esther Kwan Wing Ho's brother who earlier passed away from a hiking accident. How did he feel? He said, "I feel a little better, you have to adjust your emotions. Something sudden and difficult would always happen in life. While getting used to face joy, you should also face the unpleasant, difficult and changing events." He stated that his wife has gotten better and then asked the media to change the subject. He also said that later he would stay in Hong Kong for a Dante Lam Chiu Yin produced movie, in which he would have to fight nonstop. He was very scared, but since they have worked together many times and cultivated a bond he believed that he would be able to coordinate. Although he would not need to show off his muscles, he would stay agile with training. He said, "Being able to work in Hong Kong is already very good. After work I can go home and have dinner. Being able to sleep in my own bed is already great. I don't know if anyone has tried to be in quarantine for 21 days. I didn't feel too good about it. I could only keep cleaning my room. I even ran in my underwear, because I didn't have much to do." Kelly Chen Wai Lam revealed that she was recording songs and working with new musicians. She hoped that the songs would be released this year. Would she make another movie? Kelly admitted that making movies was tougher than raising children, as she might need to handle fight and diving stunt scenes in a movie. However she stressed as long as she had a good script she would make it. Kelly also hoped to be able to perform a concert next year at the soonest. Kelly said, "I never thought about fading out of show business, stay at home I have been like a home tutor, very bored. However my two sons' homework has improved leaps and bounds." Eman Lam was tangled in gossips but said that she felt a little better, because lately she has been busy with STARS ACADEMY 2, music school classes and performance work. "Actually many people have been great, saying encouraging and supportive words to me. (How would you bring back the upset fans?) Many fans have been with me for many years, I believe if I put an effort into the music, I would see them again in the end." She felt like she was a cyberbullying victim, but believed that the sun would come out after the rain and they would meet again with music. Popular boy band MIRROR opened the show as guest performers as they performed the Hong Kong Film Award theme song GOLD PERSON. The 12 were dressed in black and made quite a presence on the red carpet. Keung To wore over HK$ 1 million in diamond accessories. Jer this year was nominated for Best Original Film Song. He said that he was already very happy with just the nomination. Ian said that he would like to make a movie with all 12 of them, but they would be like a group of kindergarten students on the set. It would be like an absurd comedy. Anson Lo said that they could make a horror film. As for the recent negative news around him, Ian admitted that at first he was a little upset but he is already fine. "I don't keep quiet around people I am close to, people who know me would understand." Edan talked about his new film CHILLI LAUGH STORY (HOP GA LAT) making over HK$ 10 million. He thanked everyone and was grateful for their support. Would he wear swimming trunks to thank everyone if the box office would go higher? He joked that he would worry about it when it reached HK$ 700 million. Anson Kong would have a chance to provide his voice to an animation he really liked. Keung To earlier finished a new Taiwan film in the U.S. He did not know whether he would have to go to promote it in Taiwan later. In addition, when MIRROR appeared, ViuTV broadcast the full 7 minutes. However when the group ERROR appeared it went to commercial. ERROR fans were upset and blasted the comment section on the television station's site. * (2022/07/18) Director John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) two days ago arrived in Montreal, Canada to accept the Fantasia Film Festival Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2010 and 2017 he received Lifetime Achievement Award at the Venice Film Festival and the Busan Film Festival. John Woo recalled receiving the recognition from the Venice Film Festival. "At the time when the film festival director Marco Muller mentioned presenting the Lifetime Achievement Award to me, my first response was shock. My second response was thinking that he was joking." He remained very excited about getting another Lifetime Achievement Award. The 76 year old John Woo still had no plan to retire. This Lunar New Year he even went to Mexico to direct his new film SILENT NIGHT. The film reportedly has already completed production. This time he temporarily set aside the post production work and flew to Canada with his daughter Angeles Ng Fei Ha to accept the award. * (2022/07/17) Sandra Ng Kwan Yu, Ronald Cheng Chung Kei, Edan Lui Cheuk On, and Gigi Leung Wing Kei starred CHILLI LAUGH STORY (HOP GA LAT) opened last Thursday (the 14th) and defeated THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER at the box office. CHILLI LAUGH STORY with its advanced screenings and two day cumulative box office made over HK$ 5 million. With many booked shows, it would likely break HK$ 10 million. Ng Kwan Yu and Cheng Chung Kei today would attend the Hong Kong Film Award. The former would vie for Best Actress with ZERO TO HERO (MAMA DIK SUN KEI SIU JI), while Cheng Chung Kei would be a guest presenter. They jokingly that they secretly plotted to "hijack" the award show and promote CHILLI LAUGH STORY on and off stage. Ng Kwan Yu and Cheng Chung Kei two nights ago along with the CHILL LAUGH STORY director Coba Cheng Chun Hin went to three shows to show their appreciation to the audience. The audience response was enthusiastic. Some said that they have already watched it 6 times and asked when would the sequel begin production. Some even jokingly asked them about the "Alan eats fans" story in the film. Producer and star Ng Kwan Yu hoped that the film would break HK$ 10 million in its first week. Cheng Chung Kei said, "Our goal is to reach 700 million." Cheng Chung Kei revealed after receiving the CHILLI LAUGH STORY (HOP GA LAT) script, he kept getting disturbing calls from producer Ng Kwan Yu. "Every time she called she would ask whether I read the script yet. Finally she told me, don't bother, just take the role!" Kwan Yu said that she left the script at the lobby of where Cheng Chung Kei lived and wrote "For Mr. Cheng." "He really liked this story, he already agreed to take it within 24 hours." The Hong Kong Film Award would take place tonight. Ng Kwan Yu said that she would experience the atmosphere in person and promote CHILLI LAUGH STORY to friends on site. She suggested for Cheng Chung Kei to take advantage of the opportunity to promote when he would present an award. "We should coordinate, the first thing he should do on stage is to talk (about the movie)." She joked that next year she wanted to win Best Supporting Actress with this film. Cheng Chung Kei said that she should aim for Best Film. CHILLI LAUGH STORY opened on July 14th. Its opening day box office was over HK$ 1.32 million, crushing the over one week long release of THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER's single day take of HK$ 1.22 million. This year the Hong Kong film box office has been average in the first half. According to the Hong Kong Box Office Co. Ltd.'s first run movie box office performance from January 1st to June 30th, 73 films were released and only 6 were Hong Kong films. Due to the pandemic, the cinemas closed for business for 104 days. When operation resumed on April 21st the admission amount was also restricted. None of the 6 Hong Kong films were able to pass HK$ 1 million mark at the box office. In first place was BREAKOUT BROTHERS (TOH YUK HING DAI 3) with around HK$ 710,000. Two nights ago CHILLI LAUGH STORY's executive producer Matthew Chow Hoi Kwong on his online program talked about the difficulties of Hong Kong film. He said that CHILLI's box office has been decent, but the boss actually has not made money yet. They only hoped not to lose any. Speaking of the film's original Lunar New Year scheduled release, their WhatsApp group was full of momentum and said that they wanted to sweep up all the shows. Yet with the fifth wave of pandemic, the group has been quiet for almost two months. Everyone did not dare to even say any comforting word. The release now was due to good luck. He also said that when the audience went to see CHILLI, they wanted to see how they endured until this summer slot to be able to say Gung Hei Fat Choi to everyone. * (2022/07/17) The 40th Hong Kong Film Award will take place tonight. After two years away due to the pandemic, the competition has been rather fierce for this film industry event. Supposedly Francis Ng Chun Yu who was not the top favorite turned the situation around and had hope for his first Best Actor award; Best Actress would be between Cya Liu and Sandra Ng Kwan Yu. Francis Ng Chun Yu's career is the "same age" as the Hong Kong Film Award. If this year he would win Best Actor, the meaning would be extraordinary. After 40 years in the business he has made around 170 films, but the Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor has already brushed by him. Even in THE MISSION (CHEUNG FOR) 22 years ago his acting was described as in its prime, in the end he was only able to win at the Golden Horse Award. This time in DRIFTING (SHOOK SHUI PIU LAU) he played a homeless drug addict "Brother Fai", from the film release, the Hong Kong Film Award nomination to the several rounds of voting, he received praises and recognition from many of the Hong Kong film industry. Some said that his portrayal this time was very convincing, brought freshness to the audience and had hope of a "breakthrough of zero". Chun Yu has been drooling over the prize. When the film was released he stated that the first time he read the script he cried, the reason he took it was because he "obviously wants to win awards." Lam Ka Tung this time has two Best Actor nominations with the film LIMBO (JI CHI) and HAND-ROLLED CIGARETTE (SAU GUEN YIN), originally he would very likely win, but two nominations had their positive and negative points. The votes would thus be split; after 60 years in film, Patrick Tse Yin with TIME (SAT CHOOK GOR WONG FUN) was a "rookie" nominee. Reportedly, Ka Tung earlier was injured on the set. Currently he is fine and confirmed for the event tonight. He would support the Hong Kong Film Award with action, and his spirit should be commended. As for Best Actress, first time nominee Cya Liu faced good actors like Gong Li. Without any fear, she in LIMBO played a character with a complex state of mind Wang Tao. Throughout the entire film she was abused at will by others. After being kidnapped Cya struggled to survive in garbage with the rats. On more than one occasion she said that at the time she had a skin reaction all over her body from the shoot. She once worried that the dirty water would make her ill. The character lingered with her for over 3 months. Now that she is the favorite, it was worth all the hardship. Actually Cya has been in Hong Kong since coming from the Mainland in March, stated mainly because she wanted to personally witness this event. "When I made my first movie, I wish for one day when I would have a chance to bring my work to the Hong Kong Film Award." For days she has been busy with trying on what to wear, so she would be able to steal the spotlight on the red carpet first today. As for being the favorite, Cya said, "I don't have any pressure at all. However I feel the people around me have more pressure than I do. (Are you nervous?) Gradually, because I really haven't participated in an event that I would have to see a lot of people. (Are you full of confidence?) Just average, the nomination is already great. Ultimately I want to thank everyone who have enjoyed my performance, because as an actor I am very happy that the movie I am in has been seen." Due to the pandemic, this year's Hong Kong Film Award has already decided to cancel the event's celebration banquet. However reportedly Koo Tin Lok's film companies would hold a joint celebration with other film companies after the ceremony so the recipients would be able to share the joy with their colleagues. * (2022/07/17) Mainland master class Best Actress Gong Li with the film LEAP was nominated for Best Actress. In the film she played the former China's women national volleyball team head coach Lang Ping. During the production she spent an extremely amount of time to grasp the character and experienced the life at the women's national volleyball training base. Even Lang Ping's daughter Bai Long who took part in the film praised Gong Li for bringing the character to life. Although the role won word of mouth all over, this year the competition has been fierce and Gong Li before the race was extremely low key. Thus this year her chances were normal. However, when she posed for the Hong Kong Film Award program photo shoot she shared her view about the award. "Giving and contributing to film is the most basic attitude of someone who chose to be an actor. She would always follow her own passion and original intent, never go along with the crowd." Obviously she only wanted to guard her original intent, everything else was secondary! Unexpectedly, this idea was similar to her fellow Best Actress nominee Chrissie Chau Sau Na. Chau Sau Na wrote on the program, "My original intent never changed, for every movie I want to play my character well." Although this time she did not have any pressure from competing for the award, she has chosen something super hot to wear for tonight. * (2022/07/17) After over half a century in film, Michael Hui Koon Man this year would receive the Hong Kong Film Award Lifetime Achievement Award. He pointed out that with the film SECURITY UNLIMITED (MOR DUN BO BIU) he won the first Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor, but at the time his legs were so swollen that he could not move. His brother Ricky Hui Koon Ying had to accept the award on his behalf. He thought that he would have another chance later, but after waiting for decades he had six nominations and never won again. Even his wife said that it was "time's up" for him and he would no longer have another chance. He never expected to receive this award this year! However, Hui Koon Man joked that he has not directed in over a decade. Seemingly he no longer had the confidence to make people laugh. Was this a consolation prize for me? When President Derek Yee Tung Sing explained that he received the award due to general public recognition, he was relieved and felt honored as he gladly accepted the award. * (2022/07/16) The 40th Hong Kong Film Awards will take place Sunday at the KITEC. Yesterday a worship ceremony was held. The Hong Kong Film Award Board of Directors President Derek Yee Tung Sing and the Board representative vice president John Chong Ching, Candy Yu On On, Tina Lau Tin Lan, Tin Kai Man, Chow Kwok Chung, Chin Kar Lok and this year's double nominees Louise Wong Dan Nei and Leung Chung Hang participated and prayed for a smooth award ceremony. The Hong Kong Film Awards has been affected in recent years by the novel coronavirus. In 2019 the Hong Kong Film Awards president Yee Tung Sing announced the results of the 39th Hong Kong Film Awards online. Then the preparation for the "HKFA 40" also was hindered and postponed, making it two years in one event. Not only 19 awards would be presented, two of the highest honors the Lifetime Achievement Awards and the Professional Spirit Award would be presented to Michael Hui Koon Man and Chow Kwok Chung. Yee Tung Sing revealed that this year many Best Actors including Koo Tin Lok and Nick Cheung Ka Fai have been invited to be the guest presenters. Most of the nominees would also attend, only few nominees who were overseas or in the Mainland due to the pandemic would not be able to attend, including the Best Actress nominee Gong Li. As for the Best Actor nominee Gordon Lam Ka Tung who recently injured his lung while working on his new film I DID IT MY WAY (CHIM HUNG) and was hospitalized, and the 85 year old Patrick Tse Yin (Sei Gor) still has not agreed to attend the award show. Yee Tung Sing revealed that Sei Gor was a senior and would depend on his condition that day. The event would follow up daily. As far as he knew Lam Ka Tung's condition was not as severe as reported. Yee Tung Sing stressed that whether the recipients would get their awards whether they would appear or not, and he would handle the matter with flexibility. When Lam Ka Tung was hurt, action director Chin Kar Lok was at the same location but shooting another unit. He did not find out until afterward. "At the time we were shooting in Units A and b. I only knew that an accident happened. Out of an abundance of caution, we called an ambulance to send Ka Tung to the hospital. I sent him a text message and he responded that it was no big deal. Men had to be a little hurt. Relax, he would recover very quickly. I learned that Ka Tung just had the air knocked out of him and probably did not suffer any broken bone." Ka Tung this time received two Best Actor and a Best Screenplay nominations. Would not being able to attend be regrettable? Kar Lok joked that let president Yee Tung Sing worry about that, ultimately the greater the responsibility the greater the stress. Yee Tung Sing admitted that he would not worry about things that were beyond his control. Instead he made fun of Kar Lok that as a TVB person would be able to appear on this year's ViuTV live broadcast? Kar Lok joked, "I am the happiest about being able to appear on different television stations. Hong Kong Film Awards has been broadcast live on ATV before, but Tsang Chi Wai and I went together. We even spoke Cantonese!" Hong Kong Film Awards double nominees Leung Chung Hang and Louise Wong Dan Nei were nominated for Best Actor, Best Actress and Best New Performer. Speaking of the upcoming award show Wong Dan Nei said that it felt very much like a dream, but would try to enjoy the process because she has always been someone who was only nervous afterward. Her husband Sheldon Lo Hau Yung would cheer her on while their daughter would stay home and watch TV to support her. Wong Dan Nei picked out what she would wear for her first Hong Kong Film Award, it would be stylish but a little mysterious. She joked that it would also be convenient for going to the bathroom. Leung Chung Hang said that he was rather nervous because he and Wong Dan Nei would have to sing on the stage and salute the late elders of the past two years. Instead he felt normal about the awards and would let them up to fate. Whether he would win or not he would be just as happy. * (2022/07/16) The Louis Koo Tin Lok produced and starred, Carina Lau Ka Ling, Philip Keung Ho Man, Tse Kwan Ho starred Chinese science fiction action film WARRIORS OF FUTURE (MING YUT JING GEI) has been set for release on August 25. The new film after years of preparation would be the largest scale science fiction epic in Hong Kong history. Its production cost reached HK$ 450 million in hopes of being able to set a milestone for Chinese film and open a new chapter in Asian special effects. As WARRIORS OF FUTURE stepped into the countdown stage, it stirred up a science fiction robot war fever. The film company released some of the characters' latest poster and the latest trailer, and starting Monday on a large 3D video wall on Matheson Street near Times Square at Causeway Bay video promotions would be shown. The robots in the 3D wall videos would be an important character "Kung Kei" in the film. "Kung Kei" is active, agile and full armed, with heavy firepower and guns it is a military robot that can take out its enemies in seconds. Its original purpose was to protect the people, but later in the film it became a hard to handle opponent that pursued Louis Koo Tin Lok and Sean Lau Ching Wan. In addition on the 3 film posters were a fully equipped Koo Tin Lok, Sean Lau Ching and the eye catching Keung Ho Man. Listed on the posters were their character names and ranks. The trailer had many actors and robots, the pace was so intense and exciting that people's adrenaline and pulse would rise after watching. * (2022/07/15) The film DETECTIVE VS. SLEUTHS (SUN TAM DAI JIN) after a week in release in the Mainland already reached 250 million yuan RMB at the box office. This time "former detective" Sean Lau Ching Wan's thorough performance as four characters to get to the bottom of the case again received rave reviews. However Director Wai Ka Fai while testing Ching Wan's acting also wanted him to jump off the building, into the sea, and lying on the roof of a car in a car chase. He absolutely would not let this old partner relax. Ching Wan admitted that this time the physical action was not considered too tough, instead the scene in which he floated on the sea after diving it was the most difficult. "I wore a diving suit underneath to float, but the costume required five pieces of clothing. The problem then arose. As we shot I started to sink. The scene needed me to be on the surface for over 10 minutes, so it was rather tiring!" In another scene he had to jump into a canal for the shoot. The location was the rapids for dragon boat race in the Mainland. Although the water was not deep, the ground was filled with rocks to create waves. He had to be on the wire in the water for the shoot, otherwise the rapids would wash him away. "If the wire broke, I would directly 'illegally emigrate' and drift back to Hong Kong, haha!" Did Director Wai Ka Fai want to mess with Wan Ching? Wai Ka Fai joked, "No, I just wouldn't let him have such an easy time with the performance. Actually I really like to shoot Ching Wan. Because he is a very talented actor, I would come up with stuff to make even him think it's hard. I wouldn't take it easy on him, in hopes of showing the audience an even more talented him!" This time the role had to go to the "god level" actor Ching Wan? Wai Ka Fai said in other words, other actors must be very time consuming on the set. He would trust Ching Wan very much. "For a director the biggest nightmare is after finding the lead, on the set you have to keep teaching him how to act. That would be a disaster. With Ching Wan I can focus on the shoot, he would take care of it himself. My creative method is no script actual or on the fly, after he took the role he would digest it then give me back something!" Ching Wan in the film had a scene in which he had to play four characters to re-enact the cast, at the same time he interpreted people with different expressions and manner of speech like he was in a schizophrenic state. The solo performance showcased his excellent acting. Was it easy for him to perform? Ching Wan humbly said, "I can't say it was easy, but I don't feel it was very hard. Instead creating is harder, since I am just talking about it it's a little simple. Because sometimes it's very strange, it's about feeling. When you put on the costume if it's there it's there, if not then you are dead! However this time I didn't get to turn down Mr. Wai's movie!" This time playing different characters simultaneously, when rehearsing at home he suddenly would change into someone else's personality. Would his wife feel strange? Ching Wan said, "She is used to it, and only says 'Dinner Time!' I am not joking. She really is used to it. I am not sitting there and talking to myself, but often my mind keeps operating and thinks about the character. It would become a habit and a part of life. When I run into shoots without scripts I can have a format like this around, but the danger is being wrong. If the direction is wrong and it's big trouble. I may not be able to save it! Actually most actors would keep thinking, many even think of things that aren't on the script. Then on the set they would be able to fill out the character." Since he projected the character in life would it be hard to leave? Ching Wan said that he has never thought about this problem, because anyone would be focused at work. He would not need to pull himself out. Some things would naturally merge, but some would always be with him. Would Ching Wan consider directing? Ching Wan said, "the directors and screenwriters I know are too strong, I can only be the actor. I would excel a little more. I don't want to learn anew, and I don't know how I would turn out!" Ching Wan received praises for reaching "god level" acting. He humbly said, "I only have opportunities like these because I run into very talented people. In my acting career so far, I would start and analyze anew with every movie. I have a special method, which is not to read the script first. I would decide how I would perform before reading the script, then I would place the character in it. I would then have these odd and strange things to stimulate myself." He also thanked his benefactor and friend Wai Ka Fai, from chatting with him he received inspirations and ideas. He would hear another view of the world, which would make him think even more and change and learn from his mistakes. Speaking of DETECTIVE VS. SLEUTHS's newer actors, Wai Ka Fai felt that the new generation of actors also was very willing to take risks. For some dangerous scenes even when they could not be seen they still tried to perform them personally. He sensed the new force among Hong Kong actors. Wai ka Fai also pointed out that this time the production environment was very rough, in particular the hardest was shooting building jumps and car chases on the actual location of Temple Street; another was the explosion on the boat in the finale, which was also rather dangerous and difficult to shoot. Wai Ka Fai and Lau Ching Wan already have decades of experience from working together and built a relationship. Wai Ka Fai said that when he joined TVB as a screenwriter, Ching Wan just started on screen. They were around their late teens and early twenties. They felt that everyone would grow, but inside they actually did not grow up. "Inside Ching Wan is a kid, To Kei Fung and I are up there in age, but we too have a kid inside. Only normally when I don't run into a group of friends, he wouldn't appear!" Ching Wan also agreed that he was no different from before. "Only that Lau Ching Wan experienced growing up, becoming famous, and once thought that his way was the only way, he has not done anything, and in the end he is still the same; I haven't had too much growth, of course sometimes my views have changed. During this pandemic I was at home for a very long time, I didn't work for a year, but I just stayed home and didn't go out. After being married for so long I have never spent such a long time with (Amy) Kwok Oi Ming, I clearly saw what kind of person I actually married.....of course I married a good woman!" Ching Wan admitted that the pandemic let him examine, getting to know and understand his family anew and did a lot that he did not do before. "Whether with family, with the bank, even calling my parents I have much more time. I felt like I caught up with my family life. Although it was not under a willing situation but under a sad environment, many movies are sad too. Only after watching it would you learn to cherish, I didn't do that before!" Ching Wan admitted that earlier he stopped for awhile and did not make a movie, he once thought about retirement and that he could no longer be an actor. He admitted, "I evaluated myself and found the lack of other talent. I am not doing it for awards, I only believe that I definitely would perform better. However earlier the attention was focused on the pandemic, family and pandemic prevention, I often worried about something would happen with my family. All of my emotions were placed there. I didn't think about making movies, so I might as well not! However the time went on, I started to watch television series again. Slowly my acting bug came back, I felt that this was my business. I don't want to compare with others, I just feel that I definitely can perform even better!" * (2022/07/15) Alex Fong Chung Shun, Edwin Siu Ching Nam, Sharon Chan Man Chi and others two nights ago participated in the Yan Chai Hospital 55th term Board of Directors celebration. Just completing his new film NOI MOK (INSIDE INFORMATION), Fong Chung Shun joked that he began his unemployment. He said, "My part is already done shooting, others are still working. Add another one to the Hong Kong unemployed. Because of the pandemic I want to rest for awhile. I hope the pandemic would soon pass." Fong Chung Shun also joked that even when he reached the point of waiting for money to eat he still would not publicly tell everyone. Speaking of Gordon Lam Ka Tung's on set accident, Fong Chung Shun believed that the current safety measures have already been done very fully, and even more protective. He wished speedy recovery for Ka Tung. On the other hand, Fong Chung Shun in his youth worked on many dangerous scenes and often ended up with injuries all over. Even his spine was crooked, now often he would ache all over. He said, "Earlier the boss Yeung Sau Sing advised me to buy a work out rack so I could hang upside down at home. Hanging for several minutes a day would help straighten the spine, indeed it has eased the pain." * (2022/07/14) The 40th Hong Kong Film Award will take place on Sunday, the 17th. The Best Actor competition will be fierce. The 85 year old Patrick Tse Yin with TIME (SAT CHOOK GOR WONG FUN) receives his first Best Actor nomination. Already won many awards he has been seen as the favorite. TIME's producer Gordon Lam Ka Tung with LIMBO (JI CHI) and HAND-ROLLED CIGARETTE (SAU GUEN YIN) received two nominations, but still saw Tse Yin as the favorite. DRIFTING (JOOK SHUI PIU LAU)'s Francis Ng Chun Yu is also a favorite. New comer and ZERO TO HERO (MAMA DIK SUN KEI SIU JI) star Leung Chung Hang should not be overlooked as he could end up with the award. Leung Chung Hang admired elders Ng Chun Yu and Lam Ka Tung and felt that the Best Actor would be a competition between the two. However he joked that he saw himself as the favorite. This year's Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor nominees included TIME's Tse Yin (Sei Gor), LIMBO and HAND-ROLLED CIGARETTE's Lam Ka Tung, DRIFTING's Ng Chun Yu and ZERO TO HERO's Leung Chung Hang. Sei Gor earlier at the 28th Hong Kong Film Critic Society Awards and the 2021 Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild Awards won Best Actor. His character Tin Lap Chau even won the Hong Kong Screenwriters' Guild's 2021 Best Film Character. With the triple crown he became the top favorite. His opponent Ng Chun Yu in DRIFTING played a homeless person and received rave reviews for his acting explosion. With LIMBO and HAND-ROLLED CIGARETTE, Lam Ka Tung has two nominations and is also TIME's producer. He treated the award normally and felt that even if he would not win, he would still keep working hard, hope to do a little better and in the future make even more good movies for the audience to watch. Lam Ka Tung said that he was the happiest about Sei Gor's nomination. Leung Chung Hang's big screen debut ZERO TO HERO was a commercial and critical success and brought him Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor and Best New Performer nominations, as he challenged elders Tse Yin, Ng Chun Yu and Lam Ka Tung. Leung Chung Hang said that he felt the nomination was already a reward. He looked back at when he first took the ZERO TO HERO role, he worried about performing poorly and the audience would jeer him. Luckily the film received good response and he was able to answer the team. He felt that his voice performance had more advantage and won many points, because he added a little creativity and not just impersonate So Wa Wai's speech. He still needed to change. He was more strict with himself, feeling that he could do better in many places. Out of 10, he would give himself a score of 6.8. Leung Chung Hang admitted that his confidence was only average, because the competition was very strong. Earlier he had a chance to work with Best Actor Lam Ka Tung on a movie and sensed that his own acting experience was quite distant from his; whether his sensitivity to the camera, understanding of the screenplay Lam Ka Tung was very strong. In addition he was very familiar with the production operation, so he was able to be in full control without any stress. Performances of Lam Ka Tung in LIMBO and Ng Chun Yu in DRIFTING left him a very deep impression, so he felt it would be a competition between the two. However Leung Chung Hang joked that he would vote for himself. "Although I praised Ka Tung for how great he is, I still see myself as the favorite." As for Best New Performer, Leung Chung Hang did not have too many ideas about victory and was happy that the other 4 other nominees, ANITA's Louise Wong Dan Nei, TIME's Chung Suet Ying, ZERO TO HERO's Fung Ho Yeung and DRIFTING's Will Or Wai Lam all received double nominations. It was a very encouraging event as it proved that people was able to see everyone's hard work. If he had to choose one, he would choose Or Wai Lam. Aside from his looks and his acting being very perfect, they were friends as well. Leung Chung Hang that day landed the "adult So Wa Wai' role also due to Or Wai Lam introducing him to the director. Or Wai Lam was nominated for Best Supporting Actor with his DRIFTING co-star Tse Kwan Ho, ANITA's Louis Koo Tin Lok, TIME's Lam Suet and ZERO TO HERO's Fung Ho Yeung. The Best Supporting Actress competition would be between CAUGHT IN TIME's Best Actress Nina Paw Hee Ching, DRIFTING's Loletta Lee Lai Chun, ANITA and LIMBO's Fish Liew Chi Yu, TIME's Chung Suet Ying and LEAP's Bai Long. Lee Lai Chun treated the award like normal. "Earlier I was nominated for several foreign awards but the awards brushed me by. This time I treat it normally." Due to the pandemic and death in the family, she was in no mood to watch movies. Thus she has not seen other nominees' performance; however she knew Liew Chi Yu had two nominations and heard that she performed very well. If she would win, as an elder she would give her encouragement and support. She felt that Hong Kong film needs new faces to pass the torch to. Tse Kwan Ho's performance in DRIFTING received raves, he like Lee Lai Chun also treated the award normally. * (2022/07/14) Seven Hong Kong master class directors "played" movie SEPTET (CHUT YUN LOK DUI), one of the segments ASTRAY (MAI LO) was directed by Ringo Lam Lan Tung (Tung San). Always excelled in his unique art of violence style crime action film, Tung San's final film ASTRAY brought something fresh to the audience as he recounted a heartwarming story about country hometown and father and son relationship. Tung San during the shoot said, "Many places are better than Hong Kong, but it doesn't have this feeling of home for me." He projected this feeling in ASTRAY. Even though the story was only a few dozen or so minutes, the audience was still able to sense his deep emotions for this hometown of Hong Kong, and the unspoken love between two generations of father and son and left people with sentiments galore. ASTRAY's casting also showed the director's thoughtfulness. He invited his mentor Chung King Fai to play the father of the protagonist; friend Simon Yam Tat Wa played the protagonist with a similar personality as the director, often exploding in foul language but a tough guy who loves and protects his family; as for the protagonist' son he is played by his own son Lam Yu Hin. Lam Yu Hin was excited about working with his father on the scene for the first time. "When I was little I visited Papa on the set. This time was the first official collaboration. I am very happy to be able to have such a rare opportunity. this is a great memory. Ten years later when I would watch this movie again, it definitely would be a happy memory." Having known Tung San for 40 years, Brother Wa talked about his final collaboration with his good friend. "Tung San never changed. I have never seen such a passionate director, who always had fire for film. I would be very excited when working on a movie with him, because his movies would always have a charm." Working with Tung San for the first time in ASTRAY, Mimi Kung Chi Yan said that he benefit a lot. "I am very honored and happy to work with Tung San. His pace and solid feel for drama was very well grasped. Although it was just a short collaboration period, I still learned a lot." * (2022/07/14) The Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor Gordon Lam Ka Tung two days ago (the 12th) in the early morning was injured in an accident while working on I DID IT MY WAY (CHIM HUNG), instantly was unable to move and required an ambulance to rush him to the hospital. As of yesterday he still has not been released from the hospital as he was being held under observation. However Ka Tung responded through phone text message. "It's just a minor case!" He said that this time he accidentally injured his lung and thank everyone for their concern and well wishes! The film company responded, "A little bumps and bruises, to ensure safety he went to the hospital to be examined. It's no big deal, thank you for your concern!" Reportedly when the accident occurred, Ka Tung was working on a gun fight scene on location in Tsing Yi. He was carrying a child actor and running ahead, suspected to have lost his balance due to the uneven road surface. He in order to protect the child actor he was carrying suffered an even more severe injury. Because at the time Ka Tung could not move at all, the team could only call an ambulance and rushed him to the hospital. On the set were director Kwan Chi Yiu, action director Chin Kar Lok and actors like Eddie Peng Yu-Yan. Everyone were very concerned about Ka Tung's condition. Yesterday Ka Tung said that he only injured his lung and was a minor case. He hoped to be able to leave the hospital as soon as possible. Ka Tung in 2017 won the film TRIVISA (SHU DAI JIU FUNG) won his first Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor. This year he has two Best Actor nominations with HAND-ROLLED CIGARETTE (SAU GUEN YIN) and LIMBO (JI CHI) and is even the favorite. Would he be able to attend the event this Sunday? Ka Tung replied, "I don't know yet!" Ka Tung actually had an accident while working on the film BEYOND THE SIN (NGOK HUNG JI OI) in the middle of last year when he worked on a jump from above in a junkyard. His face grinded again a burlap sack and his forehead was injured. He ended up at the hospital for 10 stitches and had a scar. At the time joked that men would also need to have some scars. This time he was again injured on the set, it was also because Ka Tung cared about his own performance. He also constantly served as the film producer, understood the needs of the production and the shoot. Thus for each dangerous stunt he would try to personally perform it and not use a double. He has not because of becoming a Best Actor become more careful and is rather professional. * (2022/07/14) Jennifer Yu Heung Ying yesterday attended her film PRETTY HEART (SUM LUI MEI) student screening audience appreciation event. Producer Ng Yu also attended. She said that PRETTY will hold its premiere on the 19th, not only her entire family would attend but also her in laws have said that they would support her. Because this was a family film, it was suitable for adults and children. In the film Yu Heung Ying and Hugo Goh (Ng Toi Yung) had a daughter and father relationship, but she and Vincent Wong Ho Shun had romantic scenes. Working with Wong Ho Shun for the first time, she praised him for being a good actor, focused on doing all of his homework while being a good partner at the same time. She said, "I remember we had a scene that was shot at Causeway Bay. At the time I was a little too lost in character, Wong Ho Shun used his voice to guide me into the role. Later because I was too in character I ran into the streets, luckily Wong Ho Shun pulled me back in time." How would she thank Wong Ho Shun for saving her life? Yu Heung Ying joked that because Wong Ho Shun was working in the Mainland, he might not be attending to even attend the premiere. Thus she would do all the promotional and audience appreciation work alone. This summer, Yu Heung Ying would have 3 movie releases. Speaking of her daring and sexy performance in the SEPTET (CHUT YUN LOK DUI) segment TENDER IS THE NIGHT (BIT YEH), wife and mother Yu Heung Ying joked that she would not recommend this film to her in laws but she would watch it with her husband. "My husband knows about those scenes. Although he isn't in the business, he understands my job and knows how to appreciate art. However this time is considered my bottom line of bottom lines. In the future if my daughter would ask, I would explain that this is film art." [ In Production Now/Soon ] I DID IT MY WAY Can : Chim Hung Lit : Undercover Walk d.
