MISCELLANEOUS * (2022/07/06) Jeana Ho Pui Yu in the film DETECTIVE VS SLEUTHS (SUN TAM DAI JIN) had an extremely big breakthrough, as she had to cut her hair short and shave her eyebrows. Thus for awhile she lost self confidence. However in the film she played the role of Cheung Lam, daughter of Sean Lau Ching Wan. Her biggest gain was working with Best Actor Lau Ching Wan. Jean revealed that during the 3 month shoot, she never saw Ching Wan looking at his phone. His focus and attention span truly left her speechless. DETECTIVE VS. SLEUTHS would open on July 21st in Hong Kong. Jeana worked with director Wai Ka Fai for the first time and he asked for a super breakthrough with her appearance this time. She cut her hair and as a pretty girl the biggest psychological obstacle was shaving her eyebrows. Finally Jeana agreed after struggling for half a day, only because she had the rare chance to work with many elders. She did not want to lose the opportunity. She said, "While shaving I was crying and laughing. I couldn't tell it was me at first, and the eyebrows would grow a little everyday. At day at work I was shaving like the guys, just like that I shaved for 3 full months. However with the short hair I had self pity for two years. Friends around me all felt that I lost my self confidence. If I had to shave my head, at this moment I might not be able to do it." Jeana in the film played the role of Cheung Lam. "Cheung Lam's personality was extremely rebellious, because of misunderstandings with Papa she would constantly oppose him and caused a lot of trouble. Later she would come to a realization. Over the 3 months of production, the most memorable was that I never saw Brother Ching Wan look at his phone. I completely didn't know which model of cell phone he was using. However Brother Ching Wan suggested why not prepared 10 or 20 more versions to meet the director's need, perhaps on the set he would take the one with the most spark." Brother Ching Wan's professionalism convinced her. This time Jeana mainly had chase and gun fight scenes, which was rather exhausting. She stated that she had to run nine blocks. In one scene she and German Cheung Man Kit had to run like mad, but she ran too slowly. Cheung Man Kit had to push her from behind to run. In another shoot on the 9th floor roof of a Temple Street building, if she had to go to the bathroom she had to go to another building. Going up and down 9 floors truly was too much. In CUSTOMS she even worked with many Best Actor and Best Actress elders. Polly said that when she first saw the elders she was very nervous. The news of Ngai Hong's passing flooded social media with his golden quotes and eulogies for him. TVB re-aired the television series based on his novel THE LEGENDARY RANGER (YUEN CHUN HAP). ATV also posted the 1989 show CELEBRITY TALK SHOW GOLDEN BANQUET, in which Ngai Hong sprayed champagne and jumped into the swimming pool in a full display of his mischievous nature. However, different opinions have been seen online in the Mainland. In the first half of the year the top five highest grossing Hong Kong films were BREAKOUT BROTHERS 3 (TOH YUK HING DAI 3), which topped the chart with HK$ 713,011 since its June 2nd release. BREAKOUT BROTHERS 2 meanwhile from April 28th to June 8th made HK$ 481,945 and came in fourth. LOOK UP (YUT YEUNG DIK TIN HUNG) from June 23rd to now came in second with HK$ 682,282. The Vincent Kok Tak Chiu host ViuTV program POPCORN SHOW two nights ago spoke with the Hong Kong Film Awards president Derek Yee Tung Sing, director Kearen Pang Sau Wai and several behind the scene rising stars. His author friend Sham Sai Sing yesterday announced the news on social media. Reportedly Ngai Hong earlier did not feel well and went to the hospital. His son Joe Ngai Chun and daughter in law Vivian Chow Wai Man have yet to replied at the writing of this article. Ngai Hong was born in 1935. His sister was author Yik Shu. In 1976 after graduating from the Hong Kong University he went to study film in the U.S. In the 80s when he and his beloved Cheung Yuen Ting worked together on the film THE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT (FEI FAT YI MAN) they already began to show signs of their brilliance. This pair of Hong Kong film New Wave director "couple" was known as the "Bonnie and Clyde of Directors". Together they created many classic films including AN AUTUMN'S TALE, PAINTED FACES, NOW YOU SEE LOVE...NOW YOU DON'T (NGOR OI LAU MAN CHAI), THE SOONG SISTERS (SOONG GA WONG CHIU), CITY OF GLASS (BOR LEI JI SING), BEIJING ROCKS, and ECHOES OF THE RAINBOW. In 1987 Director Law with AN AUTUMN'S TALE won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Screenplay. In 1988 PAINTED FACES received the Golden Horse Award for Best Director and in 1998 CITY OF GLASS received the Golden Horse Award for Best Original Screenplay. In 2010 ECHOES OF THE RAINBOW even received the 60th Berlin Film Festival Generation kplus category's Crystal Bear Prize for Best Film, the 5th Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild Award's "Outstanding Director of the Year" and the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Screenplay. In 2010, Law Kai Yui received the Hong Kong University honorary university fellows. Law Kai Yui and Cheung Yuen Ting were the "Condor Couple", they not only were the best partners at work but also the most solid companions in love. They worked together in the 1980s on the film THE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT and began to show signs of their brilliance. Then they worked together as screenwriters, directors and producers on many classic Hong Kong films. Each time they appeared in public they were with each other. They encountered each other in 1982 at a classroom at New York University's film department. Because they were compatriots, they very naturally worked together on films and even began a couple. For 40 years they mostly maintained their work format from their film student days, as they came up with the story together. Some film work partners might due to differences of opinions and break out, but they were able to live and work together. Cheung Yuen Ting once said in an interview that different opinions were inevitable in film production, only the director would have the final say. During the shoot, when Law Kai Yui would bring up problems with anything, she would cautiously consider his opinion. If she disagreed, she would tell him the reason. Ultimately everyone wanted the best for the film, so they would not bear any grudge. While many outsiders thought that they were already married, in an interview 10 years go they said that they still have not registered their marriage officially. Cheung Yuen Ting once in an interview said that if she would be pregnant she would wed Law Kai Yui, but they both gave their all to their film work and were afraid that they would have time to take care of the next generation. Thus they never wed or had children. Although they were always a couple, whether professional or personally they were a publicly recognized pair. The outside described them as a "couple team" , not only have their worked together endless times on movies but also when they attended any event they were together. Director Law Kai Yui had less films than Cheung Yuen Ting. He often joked that he would offer his girlfriend the role of the director because he was lazy. Actually they have worked together for many years and had chemistry long ago. Cheung Yuen Ting once said, "Whoever started the project would be the one who was more affected, so that one would be the director." She also praised Law Kai Yui for his intricate thinking, which enable them to make up for each other's shortcomings. Law Kai Yui once described his creative time with Cheung Yuen Ting as "half difficult half excellent", admitting that when they went to work they would study scripts together, after work at home they still would be reading scripts. Actually they would feel exhausted, but the business was making movies was too lonely. Only with a soul mate's support they were able to make the journey less tough. Chow Yun Fat and Law Kai Yui worked together on AN AUTUMN'S TALE and NOW YOU SEE LOVE...NOW YOU DON'T, both were well remembered. Fat Gor felt the news of Law Kai Yui's passing was rather regrettable. Fat Gor remembered that their last meeting was over a year ago. At a recording studio he ran into the couple, who was providing their voices to a documentary film. At the time Law Kai Yui looked good and did not appear out of the ordinary. Fat Gor said that Director Law was a very talented director and screenwriter. Mild mannered, on the set when the shoot ran into anything rough he would very patiently listen to the actors. Everyone's communication was great. Unlike some directors and screenwriters who were unwilling to listen, he was very receptive to actors' opinions. "The script Law Kai Yui wrote was outstanding, with Cheung Yuen Ting directing, they were the flawless 'Condor Couple'!" Fat Gor remembered when they worked on AN AUTUMN'S TALE in New York, due to the limited budget of the film the production was very difficult. It was also the era of production with film. Back then producer Winnie Yu Tsang would watch the shoot on the set, after work she would watch the film at the screening room. Whenever any flaw or bad places were found they would meet and shoot anew. Law Kai Yui was very patient, because he actually loved film. Law Kai Yui and Cheung Yuen Ting had no temper, and could not be any better people. "They were very mild mannered, university students, cultured people. When they spoke they spoke softly, truly regrettable that he passed away at such a young age of 69!" Fat Gor sent his condolences to Cheung Yuen Ting. "Yuen Ting might have lost her companion, as well as a beloved partner and colleague, but she still would need to stay tough!" Speaking of AN AUTUMN'S TALE restored version being released this month, Fat Gor felt that it would be well worth the effort. He really like this story as well, simple depictions of the two characters were written in great details and well shot. The shoot in New York brought him many beautiful memories that he savored. "Truly very few would write romantic relationship to be so innocent yet stick to the bone. It truly was very rare. I never ran into such a detailed movie since I have been in the business!" Working with Director Law on AN AUTUMN'S TALE, Chung Chor Hung remembered, "AN AUTUMN'S TALE was one of the few complete script I received. When I was reading it then I laughed and I cried, I cried then I laughed. I was fortunate to be able to take part in it. Thank you for accomplishing AN AUTUMN'S TALE." Carol Cheng Yui Ling worked with Director Law on NOW YOU SEE LOVE...NOW YOU DON'T. She was saddened to hear about Director Law's passing. She remembered when she made this Lunar New Year she was very happy, it had many romances. In addition at the time she has not worked with Chow Yun Fat in three years. Law Kai Yui and Cheung Yuen Ting was already very famous as a 'couple team', so the shoot was extra pleasant. Sister Do's impression of Director Law was serious at work, doing all of his homework and taking care of the actors, which made every shoot very smooth. Unfortunately they only worked together once. Her NOW co-star Teresa Mo Shun Kwan was very shocked to hear the news from friends. She admitted that lately her mood has been very poor because her friends passed one after another. Yam Tat Wa also revealed that he and Director Law originally planned to go to Cuba, but they now could no longer be able to. This year the Mainland summer box office would be rather cheerful, with Sean Lau Ching Wan and director Wai Ka Fai's "golden team" created Emperor Motion Picture DETECTIVE VS. SLEUTHS (SUN TAM DAI JIN), "Seven Best Actor Cheung" Nick Cheung Ka Fai's film, one of the four great box office heads Mainland Best Actor Huang Bo's film and the film starred Du Jiang and Tong Liya. Ken even prepared a special "present" for myself -- as he successfully lost 10 pounds. * (2022/07/01) The Sandra Ng Kwan Yu produced and starred summer Lunar New Year film CHILLI LAUGH STORY (HOP GA LAT) yesterday announced its New York Asian Film Festival and Canada's Fantasia Film Festival selections. In the film Edan Lui Cheuk On, Dee Ho Kai Wa and Locker Lam Ka Hei were as close as brothers. They worked together for the first time, on and off scene they were full of chemistry and just like real brothers. They even showed off their dance skills as they made a song parody. They danced and they rapped. In another scene that was shot on location at a street stall, they drank beer and had a heart to heart talk. During the shoot they really drank and drew many of their fans to look on. The fans were very cooperative, only silently waited and supported for their idols with hindering the production. They also shared the screen with elder Ronald Cheng Chung Kei on a taxi scene. They listened respectfully to Cheng Chung Kei and producer Peter Chan Ho Sun, discussed the script and completely put away their normally funny sides. * (2022/07/01) Kevin Cheng Ka Wing in the film BURNING (FUN SUN) played a doctor and a good father, with his on screen wife Rebecca Zhu he had a 5 year old son. Dada Chan Jing played the third party who step by step invaded Ka Wing's family. In one scene Dada gave a sleeping drug to Ka Wing's son. Ka Wing immediately tried to flush it out with water. On the day of the shoot Ka Wing first had to carry his unconscious son to the bathroom. At the moment the child actor needed to completely relax his body. Before the shoot Ka Wing first picked up his son to rehearse the scene, ensure the actor understood what to do. During the flushing the child actor only had one or two accidentally spraying the led to bad takes. In the end the scene was smoothly completely. Ka Wing said, "At first when I saw the child actor who played my son, I told him this scene would be very tough on you and prepared him. i feel children need to be coaxed, so I promised if you perform well uncle would give you a toy." After finishing the shoot, Ka Wing kept his promise and gave him a big box of Lego as a present. Luckily the team including director Alan Mak Siu Fai and producer Tin Kai Man was full of experience and able to resolve any problem as it arose. Two days ago, Sing Sing and Chan Kwok Bong in the sweltering heat shot an investigation scene in Sheung Wan. Although it was a dramatic scene, they wore heavy suits on the streets under the blazing sun. They walked around like they were carrying "human ovens". Although they were drenched, they were great actors as they got into character as soon as cameras started rolling. Chan Kwok Bong frowned on the street as the lawyer Sing Sing made a dominant appearance, and conversed with me. When many neighbors saw Sing Sing they took out their phones to take photos, but they were very orderly and did not hinder the shoot. This dramatic scene took a dozen or so minutes to complete. Due to how hot and humid the das has been, after the shoot the first thing Sing Sing did was to "remove his armor". He took off the suit jacket. For the convenience of the team he remained on the set despite the heat and watched playback with the director and the producer. He did not return to the vehicle to enjoy the air conditioning as the team remained united. Sing Sing was resistant to heat as well as fighting. Reportedly, he and Ng Chun Yu teamed up against the film's big boss. In it they had their share of action scenes and gun fights. Earlier in an ending scene he was injured on the wire, but still toughed out the pain as he did not want to hinder the progress. In the film he was also a taekwondo instructor. The team requested for him to kick higher than his head, thus he would stretch whenever he had free time in preparation. In addition, as the financial director and dangerous figure Yam Tat Wa was also hurt from a 5 floor fall. "OMG I got into the Oscars......voting". In the video she said that she received the email right before bed at night to congratulate her on her invitation to become a voter.
