MISCELLANEOUS * (2019/11/20) The Donnie Yen Chi Tan starred, Wilson Yip Wai Shun directed, Raymond Wong Pak Ming produced kung fu film series IP MAN has become a classic in the past decade. This installment continued with the original team to create IP MAN 4: THE FINALE, with Yuen Woo Ping as the action director. The film has been confirmed for a December 20th release. The IP MAN series has always added new cast members in each installment. This time was no exception as 16 year old actress Vanda Li joined the cast. In a classmate bullying scene, Vanda absolutely gave her all as she was slapped until her nose bled. In her first film Vanda already had many scenes with Yen Chi Tan. Vanda praised him as being very friendly and great with Wing Chun like he was born to do it. She also liked his portrayal of Ip Man, which had both tough and tender sides. Speaking of the classmate bullying scene in England, she revealed that she practiced Tai Chi from morning to night for a month for it. "Action scenes are very tough, everyday I would find different wounds on my body. For this slap scene, I didn't expect it to be so vicious. After the slap the director said that it looked good. At that moment I was very happy, but after that everyone started to get scared because my nose was bleeding. This was my first nosebleed!" Vanda said that Lord Eight even extended her abuse scene, but in her eyes Lord Eight was great. He had no temper and resembled her grandfather a lot. He would even personally perform the stunts for them. Aside from physical combat, Vanda in the film also had different highly difficult stunts like cheerleading on wire. She said that although she has never been a cheerleader, since she studied dance she picked it up very quickly. "The choreography has an instructor. I practiced with girls who already knew the routine. I really like working with this team, I even want to join a cheerleading team in real life!" * (2019/11/20) The Steven Ma Chun Wai written, directed and starred film debut TILL WE MEET AGAIN (SUN CHIN YEUK SEI HAU) yesterday held its premiere in Xiamen for the Golden Rooster Hundred Flower Film Festival. The mother and son relationship deeply touched many viewers as tears were shed at the screening. After the premiere, Ma Chun Wai and the team interacted with the audience. He said that a lot of the story were actual portraits for his time with his mother and urged everyone to "love on time". If their parents were still around, children should spend more time with them. He also hoped that everyone would care more about those around them with emotional illness. Earlier, TILL WE MEET AGAIN's play already ran for 11 shows at the Hong Kong Art Center. Every show was sold out. The story came from the personal experience of Ma Chun Wai's mother, exploring family, life and death, emotional health and other issues. The film's lead actress was still Koo Mei Wa as the duo continued their mother and son relationship. The film also added new actors like Jennifer Yu Heung Yi and Himmy Wong Ting Him. The audience submitted to the film version's family story and actors' excellent acting as many were tear eyed and sobbing. After the screening Ma Chun Wai met and interacted with the audience. A girl got choked up as she said, her father suddenly passed away a year ago. The viewing made her understand that she could directly face that her father has gone to Heaven. She could only work hard on learning to grow up, to not have her heart break whenever she thought of her father. Then her father in Heaven would be at peace. Ma Chun Wai embraced the girl and comforted her, "As long as you think of him, no matter where he is he would know." Ma Chun Wai also opened his heart and talked about his life with his mother. He said that in the 20 years since his mother's passing, he only went to her grave for the first time after this play was written last year. "After so many years I finally let go, we mother and son will finally meet in Heaven." Ma Chun Wai revealed that the film TILL WE MEET AGAIN will open in Hong Kong on December 5th. He hoped that children would spend more time with their parents, hug and touch them as love needs to be said. At the time he also hoped that everyone would care more about friends with emotional problems around them and show more kindness. * (2019/11/19) Veteran action actor Chan Sing earlier passed away at age 82. He has made countless films, in the 60s and 70s he made mostly wuxia films and even performed in many classic films like ACES GO PLACE (JUI GAI PAK DONG) and THE BEAST (SHAN GAU). John Chiang Dai Wai who started at the same period as Chan Sing lamented his passing and praised him as a kind and good man. When the veteran actor Chan Sing passed away, his wife contacted her husband's good friend Ng See Yuen right away. Ng See Yuen said, "He passed away on September 4th in Indonesia. Without any pain or illness, he passed away in his sleep." He also said that Chan Sing immigrated to Canada years ago. In recent years he has settled in Indonesia. Last year he returned to Hong Kong. At the time he revealed that he was not in a great place financially. Ng See Yuen immediately offered help with the Hong Kong Stuntman Association. "At the time we didn't ask the reason, we lent a hand right away. Chin Ka Lok (Association president" immediately helped. When he learned that Chan Sing passed away, he asked if he could help with anything right away." Ng See Yuen even said that Chan Sing has one son, a great piano player. Unfortunately he passed away from cancer two years ago. At the time Chan Sing could not be more heartbroken. Chan Sing started in the business in the 60s. A second generation disciple of wuxia film grandmaster director Chang Cheh, he performed in RETURN OF THE ONE ARMED SWORDSMAN (DUK BEI DOH WONG) and HERO OF THE WILD (DAI MO SI YU SIU BIU HAK). He started in the same period as Tommy Tam (Ti Lung) and John Chiang Dai Wai. In the early 70s, Chan Sing after leaving Chang Cheh worked with Ng See Yuen on movies like THE BLODDY FISTS (TONG KAU TAN) and THE GOOD AND THE BAD (NGOR FU KONG LUNG) as the lead. Because of his tough guy and moustache image he was called the "Hong Kong Charles Bronson". Then he commuted between Hong Kong and Taiwan and made many action wuxia films. Yet due to the mixed quality of the films his career was unable to go to another level. In the 80s, Chan Sing began to participate in other companies different genre films, including the Sam Hui Koon Kit starred ACES GO PLACES and the classic cult film THE BEAST. In 1996 he retired from film and immigrated overseas. Susan Shaw Yam Yaum who worked with him on many films expressed regret and praised Chan Sing as Mr. Nice Guy. "He has no temper, kind, simple, tough, one nice guy." Chiang Dai Wai said, "I worked with him on many wuxia films like THE HEROIC ONES (SUP SAM TAI BO). He mostly played villains, but I haven't had contact with him in the past decade or two because he immigrated. (In your impress what kind of person was he?) He was very nice, very big. When we worked together we were very happy. I lamented the news of his death." Chan Sing's THE BEAST co-star Eddie Chan (Ai Dik) said, "Oh! Sorry to hear that! In my memory, Sing Gor was a very kind elder. Although he and I didn't have too many scenes together, I still remember that at the time for another film a car had to run me over, he taught me how to perform to reduce the chance of injury! May Sing Gor rest in peace." * (2019/11/19) The Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Miriam Yeung Chin Wa starred film I'M LIVIN' IT (MAK LO YUN) earlier made its world premiere at the Tokyo International Film Festival and became the London East Asian Film Festival closing film. The film was selected to be the 4th Macau International Film Festival closing film and to be screened in December at the Macau Cultural Center. Director Wong Hing Fan thanked the event for the invitation and would attend with the team. He was very encouraged by the passionate response of the past two film festival's viewers and looked forward to the film release. * (2019/11/19) Conflict erupted at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University for the past few days and caught the attention of the entire city. Yesterday artists Denise Ho Wan Si, Gregory Wong Chung Hiu, director Alfred Cheung Kin Ting, PolyU Alumnus David Siu Chung Hung and others spoke up to "Save PolyU". Anthony Wong Chau Sun on twitter posted the conflict video and posted "Please help HK!" Joe Tay (Cheng King Kei) were concerned about the students. Yesterday while assisting nearby PolyU he ran into tear gas and ran for cover with others. He said that he could only bear witness. When he saw students' mothers pleading in tears to see their children in PolyU he felt even more powerless. He questioned whether hindering emergency rescue was a crime. Yesterday Cheng King Kei responded to the "Lunch with You" operation and went to Tsim Sha Tsui with friends. He ran into anti riot police near PolyU launching tear gas and ran for cover. He posted on facebook, "It seems like I can't help with anything. I feel like a failure, very guilty, very helpless. However I won't give up on doing all I can within my power, only then this life isn't wasted. Life affects life." Cheng King Kei said that he has already gone home. "At the first tear gas launch, the more experienced people on site told me, this spot isn't safe, hurry up and leave. You only have a gas mask. 'Raptors' can rush out at anytime to make arrests. This morning someone already did. I left for less than 10 seconds before someone rushed out and launched tear gas behind me. Then over 100 to 200 people ran at the same time. What I can do now is just observe and bear witness a little." Cheng King Kei said that he witnessed a woman crying about her children in PolyU. He said, "I just happened to be behind her and saw her heartbroken and screaming for a lot time. Friends and social workers kept her company and see if any family or friend nearby would help her. I thought she was very brave. When we know our children are inside, what can we do? We can only bear witness, tell people and hope more international organizations can intervene and enter in a humanitarian effort. Hong Kong doesn't even permit its own medical personnel to enter, can the Red Cross, World Vision, Save The Children, Doctors Without Borders and others get involved? Even we in Hong Kong have heard of them, they can go into war zones to save people. There would be cease fire. Perhaps Hong Kong is the exception. Is this a crime?" Ho Wan Si on facebook urged to "Save PolyU". "Seeing how the kids give their all to resist and risk their lives to break out of the blockade only to get turned back several time, I know they feel disillusioned and that the casualty is countless inside. I am extremely heartbroken. They really are just kids, why do they have to withstand such torture? Seeing the videos from that night, normal people would be worried and shocked." She also pointed out that keeping pleading mothers from going to PolyU to see their children is inhuman. Siu Chung Hung is a PolyU graduate. He said that two nights ago he could not sleep, as he contacted teachers and alumni and joined the petition to call for 1. the police to stop the use violence inside and outside the PolyU area. 2 the police to promise a peaceful exit for everyone inside the PolyU. 3 for teachers, students, alumni and everyone inside the PolyU to evacuate as soon as possible under safe conditions. He also pointed, "Political problems should be politically resolved. Please do not let Hong Kong turn into a killing field. God bless Hong Kong, God bless PolyU." Yesterday Wong Chung Hiu posted, "There is no room for defeat anymore. We have to grind our teeth together. #Comeback Win together". Director Cheung Kin Ting prayed for the students. "Our Father in Heaven, please hear our humble plea and let the students to all return home safely under your wings." * (2019/11/19) Sam Lee Chan Sam, Jim Chim Tsui Man, Benji Chiang Man Kit, Cilla Lok Tung and Poon Pak Chung yesterday recorded their Lunar New Year film DAI DOH YIN's theme song. Lee Chan Sam said that as the first time producer of Lunar New Year film and the founding film of the production company, he was both nervous and excited because the responsibility was huge. However he still treated it normally and did not have too much stress. This film mainly was a comedy and suitable for the Lunar New Year release date. This was his third turn as a film producer and had the most responsibilities. He also participated the most and learned a lot of new things, which felt rather fulfilling to him. Chiang Man Kit not only performed but also wrote the theme song. At the director's request he wrote a rock flavored but fast paced song in hopes of bringing out the hot blooded youth feeling. Thus it also called out the feeling of his 20s. Lee Chan Sam though jokingly complained that the song was too high key and very hard to sing. Chiang Man Kit joked, "We are professionals, we won't drop the key because singers can't sing it!" Lok Tung also agreed with Lee Chan Sam. She just had salivary gland infection, even her face was swollen. She was taking antibiotics and she could barely breathed. Lee Chan Sam asked Lok Tung, "Do you sing? I am really sorry I didn't know. You have to watch out for this little brother, but I am a karaoke singer!" Lok Tung joked, "Then we have to go to karaoke and spar a little!" * (2019/11/18) The two 66th Macau Grand Prix started two days ago. The film STORM RIDERS (FUNG WON)'s stars Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Dior Cheng Yi Kin appeared. Many took advantage of the classic reunion as a photo opportunity. Sing Sing looked forward to returning as a "driver" next year. Sing Sing and Ekin both looked forward to working together again and return on the silver screen again. * (2019/11/18) Stephy Tang Lai Yan and Bryant Mak Chi Lok last night attended the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival closing ceremony and the New Asian Director Award presentation. Stephy was asked about what she was wearing. She said, "Due to the heat, baring the shoulder is only child's play." She also said that she was at home and got fat from eating. She said that being fat had its advantage. "Because what I am wearing is very heavy, I am afraid that it would fall. Being fatter I can stick tighter to the clothes." She said that in mid December she will start work on a new film and she will play a volleyball coach. Earlier everyone said that she was too thin. Thus she not only exercised but also kept eating. Stephy revealed that her boyfriend Prince Chiu came to Hong Kong earlier but already returned to Taiwan. "Sometimes a little separation is good, we each have our own stuff to do. With a little distance we can have only free space, maybe before the production starts we will see each other again." As for Christmas, due to work she might not be able to spend the holiday with her boyfriend. * (2019/11/17) Singer J.Arie (Lui Sum Yu) and Terence Siufay earlier sang their first duet together for the film theme song #FEAR NOT THE WALL. She said that she and Siufay originally were in the movie, but due to the film length they were both "vanished" and sang the theme song instead. "Actually earlier I sang a song with Siufay and got over a million views. However this time was an official duet. Siufay even took the highly difficult challenge and performed this film song in high octave." * (2019/11/17) Most Post 70 Hong Kong people grew up with the Japanese national treasure class anime manga master Leiji Matsumoto's classic work like GALAXY EXPRESS 999, QUEEN MILLENNIA, SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO, QUEEN EMERALDS and SPACE PRIATE CAPTAIN HARLOCK. Recently Leiji Matsumoto went to Italy for an anniversary event. When he arrived at the screening venue he felt ill and was sent to the hospital. He was once rumored to be in critical condition after a stroke. The Japanese media yesterday afternoon revealed that Leiji Matsumoto's condition has improved but he was still under observation in the Intensive Care Unit. Leiji Matsumoto was born in January 1938 in Kurume, Fukuoka. He also has knowledge in various subjects like astronomy, archaeology, weapon and military history, thus he is greatly inspired in his creation. His work also influenced many other mangaka. Two years ago, Leiji Matsumoto visited Hong Kong and met with a group of Hong Kong manga fans. At the time he had morning tea and dim sum with fans. During an interview, he joked that now that he is old, he starts to resist birthday celebrations. * (2019/11/17) Lam Yiu Sing, Gregory Wong Chung Hiu and foreign actress Kate yesterday attended their film MEMORIES TO CHOKE ON, DRINKS TO WASH THEM DOWN (YEH HEUNG YUEN YEUNG SHAM SHUI PO) screening. This was Lam Yiu Sing's second screening. He felt happy to see the decent audience response. Because the film was about Sham Shui Po toy story history, everyone was able to relate and reminisce. As for the anti extradition storm led social instability, he said that his workload for now has not been affected too much. Next week he would begin work on a short film. He said, "It will shoot in Hong Kong, mainly indoors as not street shoot would be needed. I will play a wedding gown designer and work with a new female singer. However I won't have any intimate scene." Lam Yiu Sing earlier made 3 movies, none of which has set release dates. However as an actor, he did not worried too much about that. He only knew that if they were released he would try to coordinate with the promotions. Wong Chung Hiu in the film played a secondary school teacher. He lamented after 1997 Hong Kong has changed so much, like culture and system. He felt that they needed to be cherished. In particular something would always happen in the Sham Shui Po district, leading to many small stores' evening business being affected. However he insisted on going out with friends at night, which would prop up the Hong Kong economy. Since he and his friends were all busy, when they met they definitely wanted everyone to be safe. * (2019/11/16) The anti extradition storm caused protests and conflicts have endured for over five months and only gotten worse. Every business has been affected, and the film industry was no exception. Aside from film companies afraid of starting production, Hong Kong film releases have also become cannon fodder with poor box office results. The Gillian Chung Yun Tung starred film MISSING (SUK JUNG) and the Alex Lam Tak Shun starred LION ROCK (SI JI SHAN SEUNG) opened two days ago and their opening day box office was brutal as the numbers were only in several tens of thousands. MISSING took in HK$ 52,377 on the single day, LION ROCK was even worse as it only made HK$ 24,191. The Best Actor Nick Cheung Ka Fai starred GUILT BY DESIGN (CHUI MIN CHOI KUET) after 8 days in release although performed better at the single day box office with HK$ 145,479, its cumulative box office had a disappointing showing of HK$ 3.2 million. Two days ago two foreign films opened, FORD V. FERRARI and CHARLIE'S ANGELS. Both performed better than the 3 aforementioned Hong Kong films. FORD made HK$ 334,120 while CHARLIE'S made HK$ 320,117, but for Hollywood films their performance was still less than ideal. * (2019/11/16) Steven Ma Chun Wai and Josephine Koo Mei Wa would continue their "mother and son connection" in the film TILL WE MEET AGAIN (SAN CHIN YEUK SEI HAU) after their stage performance. Earlier they spoke to Hong Kong Open Television and agreed that their chemistry has been further "elevated". The film was based on Ma Jai and his late mother's real life story. Sister Mei Wa joked, "I treat him like my son, but he treats me I have already passed, haha." Ma Jai said, "Of course not, I feel Sister Mei Wa is my other Ma on Earth. This time in order to play how thin I got from my depression and phobia after Mother's passing, I had to slim down before the shoot. Aside from a vegetarian diet, I also deliberately lost weight. I really wanted to appear as the then me, with my cheeks caved in and not rely on makeup for effect. However no one should think that I had it very tough. As an actor to be able to make adjustments on the inside and the outside for a character, it actually is a type of happiness!" Ma Jai for this film shouldered the duties of a writer, a director, an actor and a producer. He admitted that he enjoyed all of them, but Sister Mei Wa worried that "Son" would only care about work and neglect to rest. "I asked him before while he kept working, did he have time to play? I told him to find some entertainment when he was free." The workaholic Ma Jai joked, "Everyday is like playing for me! I also enjoy the behind the scene work. For example for some of my projects later I would only write and director. Perhaps in several years I would focus on creating!" [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. TA KUNG PAO, NOVEMBER 7 2019, THE WEEK IN FILM ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION: LOOKING UP The Mainland film LOOKING UP s Deng Chao starred, Yu Baimei written, and they co-directed. The film title brings together two subjects: space adventure and education. - LAU WAI LAM Ma Fei (Bai Yu) is an astronaut who runs into an accident while in a space mission. In a hopeless situation, he is reminded of the past. Over twenty years ago, Ma Fei's father Ma Haowen was an engineer. The bridge that he designed collapsed when it was launched. Ma Haowen took the guilt of corruption for his unit and was sent to prison, as Ma Fei grew up amid humiliation and shame. Ma Haowen after being released from prison discovers that his son over the past several years has given up. Ma Haowen places a bet with the school dean, the worst student in the entire school Ma Fei will be in the top ten of the class. Ma Haowen's view on education is very different from the mainstream, would he be able to awaken his son's potential? Full of Entertainment Value First the length of this film surprises me at almost 2 hours and 30 minutes. Mainland big films would very rarely be made this long, which makes people look forward to whether the film wants to challenge the recently resurrected n Hollywood space films. However, this film's center is education. It promotes a learning method that gives up on excessive exercises, encourages on active thinking and cultivates intelligence. Ma Haowen is framed, the setting of after his prison release he helps with his son's comeback has a very Japanese film flavor. Even this arrangement of Ma Fei becoming an astronaut in the future already eliminates any suspicion on whether special education would be successful. Yet this film skillfully uses the "loser comeback" (turning around from a disadvantageous position) format and element to lead the audience's mood swing, which also makes the film full of entertainment value. The film has a drastic difference from Western school films. The latter rarely negates standard education methods. Only when standard methods are powerless in cultivating disadvantaged students, like in TO SIR, WITH LOVE and DANGEROUS MIND, a breakthrough method is needed. Yet LOOKING UP points up that the Mainland educational system although is able to make student absorb knowledge and predecessor experience, it can easily create students that lack the ability to think. The Soul of a Big Film Thus I feel that one of this film's weakness in depicting education lies with it bringing the audience into the protagonist father and son's turnaround process. It however has no way to show that this type of unorthodox education method can resolve the dead knot of the entire educational system. If the film is able to separate itself from the protagonists' emotions, it would have a very hard time in not questioning whether they are only successful because Ma Fei is a genius and Ma Haowen himself is very well learned? What about other people? Western school films often focus on "no child left behind ". While LOOKING UP is criticizing the system, it only cares about individual breakthrough. However from a commercial film angle, this film has absorbed many developed film industry's strengths. Aside from the aforementioned Japan's "loser comeback", it also has Indian films' tragedy and family, and Hollywood's variety. Different viewers would be able to find different focus. Aside from space adventure, education, family, Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing's pop song elements, this film also deliberately spreads its plot over many historical moments. Although this is not rare among Mainland films of recent years, some viewers obviously still accept it. Aside from some plot flaws (like since Ma Haowen was convicted of destroying an important facility, how can his son be permitted to join the air force and even become an astronaut?) this film has absorbed various successful commercial film formulas to achieve the soul of a big film. It certainly is a successful comeback from the team of Deng Chao/ Yu Baiemi that suffered negative reviews galore before. Eason Chan Sings Out Deep Father And Son Relationship LOOKING UP is about the deep relationship between a father and a son, a story about love and growth. The film's promotional song PERSON WHO BELIEVES IN YOU is performed by Eason Chan Yik Shun. In order to invite Chan Yik Shun to work them, directors Deng Chao and Yu Baimei flew to Hong Kong to invite him to watch the screening. When Chan Yik Shun watched the film, he cracked up at the father and son's interesting interaction but also shed tears over the noble fatherly love in the film. After the screening ended, Chan Yik Shun said to Deng Chao and Yu Baimei, "I definitely will sing this promotional song." PERSON WHO BELIEVES IN YOU teams Chan Yik shun with song writer Chan Siu Ha and lyricist Yiu Yeuk Lung. Aside from singing about the father and son's warm family love in the film, it also encourages dream chasers. Even if the road is tough, you have to give your all with all of your hope for yourself and also for that person who believes in you. Deng Chao has made over 30 films in his career, this year he even added the role of a director. Actually he wants to share his value of cultivating the next generation with the audience through the film, like the film's line, "I hope he learns more than just knowledge, he must know why people live". 2. Soon after birth, Wai was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, which made him hard of hearing and even unable to walk normally. But under a strict training regimen from his mother, Wai eventually learned how to walk and was even invited into the Hong Kong Disabled Track and Field Team. Wai has participated in multiple Paralympic Games and won many gold medals. To this day, he is still the record holder for men’s 100-meter and 200-meter at the Paralympics. For his achievements, he has earned the nickname "Wizard Boy". Wai wanted to be a full-time athlete, but due to his father's work injury, he chooses to become a courier instead to support his family. He tries to balance between work and training, but his mother begins to arrange ad appearances and paid appearances on his behalf. Soon, he falls out with Fong, his coach, for neglecting his training, and he begins to fight back against his mother’s control. The kidnappers are demanding that he hypnotize the jury in order to control the final verdict. How will he choose between justice and family? What will he do to save his daughter? [ HONG KONG ASIA FILM FINANCING FORUM ] It is the last day in the trial of a controversial murder case. Zen, as a jury member, learns that his daughter was kidnapped before the deliberation began. He is forced to find the defendant guilty of murder, otherwise his daughter will die. It seems to be an impossible task for Zen since the majority of the jury believes that the accused is innocent. The kidnappers know that Zen used to be a well-known hypnotist and they are certain that Zen can find a way to convince the jury. Also, under no circumstances should the jury be dismissed, otherwise, Zen's daughter will be dead. Zen has no option, and after eight years he uses his rusty skills to hypnotize the jury, which gets him four additional guilty votes out of six. Zen has to perform the hypnoses in an isolated small room secretly under the sight of six other jurors. Still, this is not the most difficult condition Zen has to face, because he is going against the most fundamental and important principle of hypnosis, "The subject should be informed and understood that he/she is going to participate in hypnosis; if not, the chance of a successful hypnosis will be less than 10%." An ultimate performance of hypnosis quietly takes place in this small space. ---------------------- HK Top Ten Central hktopten@hotmail.com http://www.geocities.ws/hktopten | http://hktopten.blogspot.com
