MISCELLANEOUS * (2019/11/06) Nat Chan Pak Cheung and Chapman To Man Chak had different opinions on the anti extradition bill storm. Yesterday they both appeared on the RTHK program to discuss the topic. After the news spread two nights ago it caused a stir, as some online set betting odds. Yesterday Ah Lek and Ah Jat directly faced off, one wore white and the other black in contrast. The RTHK facebook live show had over 270,000 viewers. On the program Ah Jat appeared upset many times and directly accused Ah Lek as inhuman for supporting the police using live gun fire. Ah Lek responded, "Loud doesn't mean right, upset doesn't mean correct." Ah Jat after the program ended called Ah Lek a jerk, forgetting what he has said before, and described him as a waste of breath. Ah Lek said that Ah Jat was unable to absorb anything. The live debate between Chan Pak Cheung and To Man Chak caught attention. They both said that they did not make any special preparation before hand. When the program began, the host asked how many concerts and large scale programs were cancelled in Hong Kong? Ah Jat felt that during a civil war, entertainment could not be more trivial. Ah Lek said, "These past few months have been tragic for Hong Kong. Since I was born I have never seen Hong Kong like this. I saw violence." He felt that education brainwashed young people and said that young people were unfamiliar with history and had no in depth knowledge of the nation and Putonghua. Ah Jat responded, "The focus isn't about history. The five major pleas are very clear. The cops are becoming more and more violent, 70% of the people don't trust the cops. Yet you support the cops." Ah Lek said, "I can't see how violent the cops are, if young people didn't attack the cops why would the cops use violence? The cops is subduing violence with violence." Ah Lek once said that if he was the police commissioner he would use real live fire. Ah Lek said that he still supports the use of real guns, referring to open fire at a life and death situation. He said that everyone supports the U.S., where the cops shot the homeless. Ah Jat angrily said, "In the U.S. you can buy guns. The U.S. is a people elected nation, but Hong Kong is using emergency law and has no people elected government." Ah Jat even said that supporting shooting is absolutely inhuman. Ah Lek lightly said, "Loud doesn't mean right, upset doesn't mean correct." When the subject turned to the "7-21 Yuen Long incident", Ah Jat said that when the police arrived that day and faced with people in white hitting people, they not only not open fire but turned around and left. Ah Lek said that at the time there was no offensive weapon, only bats and sticks. What he saw were only fights, how could it just be an one sided attack? As for forming an independent investigation council, Ah Lek felt that after the matter settle independent investigation could take place and investigate the entire matter clearly. The host also asked about artists running into suspected white terror and their contracts were not renewed. Ah Jat stated that nothing could be done. "The market is theirs, not welcoming you to sell your singing or your art is their prerogative." Ah Lek defended, "People have to have independent thinking. I support the police, what I have seen is correct. I feel the police is only protecting our lives and asset. They have become stuck in the middle, as they have to go to the front line." As for artists becoming flag protectors, Ah Lek said that he has never been a flag protector but said that protecting the nation is justified. After the program ended Ah Jat left. He said, "When people argue, basically they have to have something to argue about. The most terrifying part about him is not remember what he just said. (Ah Lek is a jerk?) A jerk obviously, the scary part is having no memory. You watched the live broadcast. He would just finish saying something then turn around and forget what he just said. He has no logic at all, that type of scary. (Are you very upset?) Yes! (How would you describe Ah Lek?) Waste of X breath." Ah Lek said that he had no "blue or yellow" differentiation. Anyone displeased with the government could protest peacefully, but he disliked violence. Violence from either side was bad. If the police used excessive violence it would be bad, but he could not see the police using excessive violence. As for an University of Science and Technology student falling off a building, he said it was a tragedy. These few months all have been a tragedy. His heart ached the most for the students, what they were after was not what they truly wanted. They did not need to make needless sacrifices. Ah Jat said that talking with him was a waste of breath? He felt that he got a lot from this talk, but Ah Jat was unable to absorb anything. * (2019/11/06) The Sam Lee Chan Sam produced, Benji Chiang Man Kit, Paul Chun Pui, Cilla Lok Tung, Roger Wu Wai Chung and others starred DAI DOH YIN (BIG ROBBERY PERFORMANCE) will be slated for a Year of the Mouse (2020) Lunar New Year release. As a Lunar New Year film producer Lee Chan Sam did everything personally. Aside from being the lead actor, he also turned into catering with Chiang Man Kit as he made Thai iced tea for the crew. Lok Tung could not help but place an order and praised their "skills". The third time film producer Chan Sam said, "This is a comedy, the story has tears within laughter. Mainly it shoots in Thailand and it can give the audience some new sparks." Playing the separated wife Lok Tung said, "I rarely make movies, I am very grateful to the producer for this opportunity! Many people tell me that Chan Sam specifically named me for the performance, I am very happy to play someone's wife for the first time!" Chan Sam even joked that if Lok Tung did not put an effort into her performance, he would divorce her in the sequel and kick her out of the production! Chan Sam was asked if he missed his daughter Lucy while working in Thailand. He said, "I of course miss her, but she doesn't miss me too much. She still lives like she normally does." * (2019/11/06) Louis Koo Tin Lok and Jessica Hester Hsuan (Suen Huen) yesterday attended a bank event. Goo Jai revealed that Suen Huen liked to buy stocks while working on the set. Lately Goo Jai's company was said to be interested in TVB divas Kristal Tin Yui Nei, Nancy Wu Ting Yun, Natalie Tong Sze Wing and Linda Chung Ka Yun. Goo Jai avoided the subjected. "I am not sure, I just make movies. Ask them (referring to the managers)." Recently the economic environment has affected the film industry, as almost 70% of the industry are out of work. Goo Jai said, "It's not that many. There are less jobs. The economic environment would affect film. Viewers unwilling to go to the movies would also affect it." When asked about rescue plans, he said, "We have to adjust the market, lower the cost. For long term we need the government's help. Investors are most cautious than before. I am speaking as an actor, so I am not sure." * (2019/11/06) The Lai Siu Kwan, Sze Pak Lam, Lau Wing Tai directed and written film GUILT BY DESIGN (CHUI MIN CHOI KUET) two nights ago held a premiere at the Kowloon Bay International Trade and Exhibition Center. Producer Derek Yee Tung Sing and actors Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Eddie Cheung Siu Fai, Kent Cheng Juk Si, Jo Kuk Cho Lam, Cecilia So Lai Shan and action choreographer Chin Kar Lok attended. So Lai Shan revealed that Cheung Ka Fai would the suit that he was wearing ten years ago. Ka Fai said that he wore the suit ten years ago at a radio award show as a guest presenter, but it still fit him today without feeling outdated. He joked that he supported the environment and would not throw away or give away clothes after just wearing it once. He urged artists to wear their clothes again and not to throw them away. He also revealed that Louis Koo Tin Lok loved to collect clothes and needed a lot of place to store them. He said, "The clothing that I have collected for the longest was a suit that I wore at the Cannes Film Festival. I believed I won't wear it again because that style's collar was very odd!" He said that while at TVB he wore a local designer's fashion and walked the catwalk as a model. Would he like to play a designer? Ka Fai said, "If I have the chance I would like to, anything that I haven't played before I would be interested in." In the film Ka Fai played the hypnotist. He said that he too wanted to try to be a real hypnotist because it felt very mysterious. However he believed that there was real hypnosis and fake hypnosis. He also revealed that normally his daughter constantly "hypnotized" him to be her slave and to give her a shoulder rub, but other than that she has not made any special request. Would he be able to hypnotize his wife Esther Kwan Wing Ho? He said, "If I didn't hypnotize her, she wouldn't be married to me!" Cecilia So Lai Shan in the film played a paralyzed girl. After Cheung Ka Fai hypnotized her she talked about what happened. She said that during the shoot she stared at the plate in the microwave and was completely focused in being hypnotized. Before the shoot she also rehearsed with an acting teacher. Ka Fai heard and joked with urgency, "Don't! Just you alone? Young girls insist on winging it!" Playing a cop in the film, Eddie Cheung Siu Fai revealed that two scenes were more difficult. One was underwater, an action scene in which he was unconscious and hallucinating. Another was a parking lot explosion scene that required 360 degree camera shoot coordination. He said, "Another explosion scene took an entire morning to test. Luckily everyone was agile and finished it in one take." * (2019/11/05) Director Oliver Chan Siu Kuen's directing debut STILL HUMAN (LUN LOK YUN) at the Hong Kong Film Award in April won the New Director award, its lead actor Anthony Wong Chau Sun also won another Best Actor award. Chan Siu Kuen in July announced a "new project" for the second half of the year in July, as she was pregnant! Two nights ago Chan Siu Kuen had good news, as she gave birth to a 6.5 baby boy. She shared a warm photo of the family of three. Chan Siu Kuen posted, "New project Mini Ma is born! P.S. I am working hard as a milk cow, but I still have to make diaper money. I welcome all job offer and will resume work in early 2020." * (2019/11/05) Artist Alex Lam Tak Shun earlier with director Leung Kwok Bun and "Bun Mountain King" Lai Chi Wai appeared on a television interview to share their film LION ROCK (SI JI SHAN SEUNG)'s production memorable experience. Alex admitted that the production was tough. "The most painful was when went to Tuen Mun to climb the Lion Rock. The place was five stories high, I was tied with the wheelchair and hung in mid air all night. I could only move my head and arms. Then I had to perform the most difficult and the most emotional scene. I was very frustrated! In the film Alex played Gei Dai Wai, who was paralyzed after a car accident. His life fell into a low point as he completely relied on his family's support to start over. Alex remembered while at school he deeply sensed his father George Lam Chi Cheung's love. "When I was studying in England, I remember one night I went to a barbecue with friends. One of the friends got drunk and accidentally kicked the fire over. My leg was on fire. I was at the hospital, 3 days later my Daddy flew over! I remembered that he didn't yell at me, instead he was worried about me. When you have someone who loved you around you, the feeling is much more different!" Alex also said that he has never played a character that was a father and at such an age. He said that in real life he also longed for this type of life. "During the shoot, I could feel the two fathers Director Leung and Mr. Lai had a lot that they wanted me to express through the character. Through this production I understood more what a family was." * (2019/11/05) The Soi Cheang Po Shui produced, Wong Hing Fan directed, Best Actor Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Best Actress Miriam Yeung Chin Wa, veteran actors Alex Man Chi Leung, Nina Paw Hee Ching, Cheung Tat Ming and others starred social topic film I'M LIVIN' IT (MAK LO YUN) was selected to be the 4th London East Asian Film Festival's closing film and made its European premiere on November 3rd. Sing Sing with the film's tension filled performance received high praises from the film festival jury as he was unanimously named the Best Actor to become the climax of the film festival close ceremony. Sing Sing was surprised to receive the award. This was the second time Sing Sing won Best Actor in England. Sing Sing said that acting would be his career of life. Kwok Fu Sing last week completed his Tokyo Film Festival promotion and flew to London with the film I'M LIVIN' IT and director Wong Hing Fan to attend he 4th London East Asia Film Festival. Sing Sing first was the film festival Actor Focus as the audience and the media enjoyed four of his films that were drastically different in style, including AFTER THIS OUR EXILE (FU JI), COLD WAR (HONG JIN), PORT OF CALL (DAP HUET CHUM MUI) and I'M LIVIN' IT. Sing Sing upon his arrived was only able to appear at the COLD WAR screening. The audience appreciated Sing Sing's various performances. The audience response was passionate as they fought to ask questions and for photos and autographs. The close ceremony opened with the film festival chair and Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office chief's speech. In the film Sing Sing played a financial elite turned homeless person, playing a lower class that was knocked down by the society's wealth gap. His extremely tense yet detailed performance even received high praises from the film festival jury, which felt it was a rare topical film in recent years. Without any gimmick or large scale special effect, the film was full of drama and humanity. Sing Sing said that attending the film festival in London this time had special meaning for him. Because I'M LIVIN' IT was able to be the film festival closing film, it symbolized that the film successfully broke out of Asia to introduce the domestic film that was full of Hong Kong color to the European audience. "In addition I am very honored to be selected o be this year's 'Actor Focus', to share my film journey with the European audience and media. I feel this is a great film cultural exchange, from which I have learned a lot." The film aside from getting a lot of attention and talk during the film festival, Sing Sing's tense performance that also showed the character's powerlessness in I'M LIVIN' IT received the jury's high praises as it unanimously presented the Best Actor award to Sing Sing. It was the climax of film festival's closing ceremony. Sing Sing was very surprised to receive the award. This was the second time Sing Sing won Best Award in England. The last time was in 2013 at the China Image Film Festival with SILENT WITNESS. Sing Sing said, "I am very happy to be able to receive the Best Actor Award with I'M LIVIN' IT because this is a movie that is full of people's sentiment. I put 100% into this performance, giving my heart and soul to it. Thank you to each co-star in the film, as well as the director for his trust. Running into a good script is an actor's biggest dream. I hope being an actor is my career for life." Director Wong Hing Fan happily expressed, "My first feature film as a director received recognition at different film festivals and even won Sing Sing a Best Actor award. I felt very emotional and honored inside." After the award present I'M LIVIN' IT was screened. The audience responded enthusiastically, as many shed tears as they watched. The film's realistic plot was heart wrenching and moving. After the show the applause was thunderous. Sing Sing and the director again appeared and had an exchange with the audience. Everyone truly savored this film that reflected the tragedy and shortcoming of society through a basic level small character. Sing Sing was very happy that the film had such a great response. He watched the film three times in a row and still was moved by the story as he got teary eyed. * (2019/11/02) The Wong Hing Fan directed, Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Miriam Yeung Chin Wa starred film I'M LIVIN' IT (MAK LO YUN) was selected for the 32nd Tokyo International Film Festival's Asian Future section. Earlier they attended the opening ceremony and the premiere in Japan. Kwok Fu Sing and director Wong Hing Fan two nights ago even attended a special screening and forum of I'M LIVIN' IT to a sold out crowd. Sing Sing and Chin Wa on this trip to Japan visited thrift stores. It was Sing Sing's first visit. Even though he was rather interested in electronic goods he did not find anything for himself. Instead he bought a lunch box and bib for his beloved daughters. Sing Sing and Chin Wa's trip to Japan although has been nonstop work, they waited until they finished their jobs to visit thrift stores. Chin Wa would visit the shop every time she went to Japan so she was a frequent guest. However her husband Real Ting Chi Ko has never been. Chin Wa said, "In our 10 years of marriage we have never been to a thrift shop together, this time I really have to!" They even took photos in front of he store! As for Sing Sing it was his first visit as well. He was rather interested in the electronic goods but he did not get anything. Instead the doting parents went nuts for their beloved children. Chin Wa bought a Halloween costume for her son Torres while Sing Sing bought a lunch box for his older daughter and a bib for his younger daughter. I'M LIVIN' IT's premier in Japan received high praises in terms of response and word of mouth, as it already received many extremely positive film reviews. A film critic even drew a cartoon of the film poster, which was very thoughtful. At the special screening Sing Sing said that when he finished watching his performance, he was greatly inspired. Life was very short so he had to learn to get a grasp of himself. Instead of doing something that they would regret, everyone should fight for everyone hour, minute, second to do something meaningful. Only that is life! He also said that the character in the end had cancer. He was so in character that he constantly thought that he was sick. Thus after the production wrapped he immediately went for a full physical check up. He said, "The doctor said that my luck was very health! I didn't have anything to be nervous about!" Luckily it was just false alarm. Sing Sing also said that he received this film's script while working at Cannes. As he started reading it this subject deeply touched him, thus he insisted on making this film. Aside from the attractive script, he also hoped to support new directors. He hoped that the industry would have a new power and also truly wanted more opportunities to work with new directors, because he liked the fire in their hearts. After completing this journey to Japan, Sing Sing would head to the London East Asian Film Festival to be its filmmaker in focus and attend I'M LIVIN' IT's European premiere. * (2019/11/02) THE SECRET DIARY OF A MOM-TO-BE (BABY FOOK SAU GEI) two nights ago held its world premiere in Tokyo. Producer Liu Yuen Hung, director Luk Yee Sum, stars Dada Chan Jing and Kevin Chu Kam Yin attended. After the screening completed the film received applause from an enthusiastic audience. Viewers even said that the film brought them an unexpected feeling of warmth. After the premiere a question and answer segment took place. Luk Yee Sum was asked THE SECRET DIARY OF A MOM- TO-BE and her previous film were both female driven films, what were their differences? Luk Yee Sum explained, "My previous film was about adolescent women. To me, adolescence and pregnancy are the most important life moments for women. Both are periods of growth that would create enormous changes for women." Very popular with female viewers on this trip to Tokyo Film Festival, Kevin prepared a "cheat sheet" to greet the audience in Japanese. His fluency surprised the Japanese audience. When Kevin spoke about working with Dada, he felt that they had great chemistry. The audience response also moved him. "Seeing how enthusiastic the Japanese audience response was I really felt moved. Even though I finished this film festival's premiere I was still just as nervous." Dada said that this time was also her first viewing of THE SECRET DIARY OF A MOM-TO-BE. She said, "When I was watching the film just now I actually cried, as the story moved me. Maybe I went back into the film production condition! Luckily my make up didn't melt!" After the question and answer segment, over 100 viewers were already waiting for Luk Yee Sum, Dada and Kevin for autographs outside the cinema and presented gifts, which made them very happy. Later they also visited the film festival office to thank film festival personnel and volunteers. * (2019/11/02) Radio Hong Kong yesterday announced that due to the recent social climax and out of respect for the safety of singers, fans and others attending public events, it has decided to cancel the 42nd Chinese Top Ten Gold song award and concert. Radio Hong Kong expressed that this year the event will be a cross media special program that will be broadcast in late January 2020 on RTHK channel 31, Radio Two Hong Kong and Radio Hong Kong web site to announce the award results. * (2019/11/01) Artists Candy Yu On On, Gillian Chung Yun Tung and Ling Man Lung put a lot of thought into their movie MISSING (SUK JUNG). Yu On On for her character made herself looked more weary. "During the shoot I deliberately didn't sleep to have even darker eye circles!" When Siu Lung had to hike in the heat, On On was not in the scene but still showed up to support him -- much to the envy of her "daughter" Chung Yun Tung, as she joked that she was playing favorites with her god son. Playing Siu Lung's mother, Josephine Koo Mei Wa admitted that she felt very guilty. "My character is a deranged mother with violent tendencies, in almost every scene I hit Siu Lung. I feel very sorry." However he not only did not get mad but even praised her for taking care of her junior colleagues. To be able to work with her was his honor. * (2019/11/01) Irene Wan Bik Ha, Kenny Kwan Chi Bun, Hanna Chan, Xenia Chong Shui Yi, Alice Chan Wai and others starred in the film THE FALLEN (DOR LOK FA), which held its premiere two nights ago at the 16th Hong Kong Asian Film Festival. Wan Bik Ha and Hanna Chan in THE FALLEN had a kiss scene, both said that they were "nervous" about watching this scene again. Wan Bik Ha revealed that the she made even greater sacrifice for the film, in order to bring the drug addict to life she needed to maintain the strung out look. However the result made her feel it was worth the effort. Wan Bik Ha and Hanna Chan in THE FALLEN had a kiss scene. They both said that they were "nervous". Hanna Chan said, "I look forward to watching it at the movies for the first time. The shoot didn't feel different, but when I saw this scene during voice work I was very embarrassed, a little awkward. Actually the difference was huge. I didn't tell my parents about this scene before, I rarely mention work with them. (Is this the farthest you have gone?) A little, actually last time G AFFAIRS (G SAK) was more daring. As long as the script is good I wouldn't set any bottom line." Despite all of her acting experience, Wan Bik Ha blushed when she saw this scene. She said, "This scene was very well made, the most important was that it was aesthetically beautiful. For me it wasn't 'child's play', it was a great sacrifice for me. In order to play the drug addict role, I didn't dare to eat much during the shoot. To get into character I drank a lot, went from 48 to 45 kg and lost 5 pounds as I had to maintain the strung out look. (Did your husband's heart ache?) When I see the result I feel it's worth the effort. Tonight my husband is here to show his support. Earlier I didn't tell him about this kiss scene. Seeing such a great breakthrough for my character this time, I hope to give him a pleasant surprise because he is my fan." Kenny was asked about the production halt of his film SINGER AND STRANGER (YUM SING DIK NEI) due to financial problems, he admitted, "Because an investor backed out the production has to be temporarily halted. We need seven figures to wrap it up. The company and the director are working hard on raising the money and looking for a white knight. Currently the film is already half finished. The important scene that I practiced a long time for earlier hasn't been shot yet. At the end year of the I would shoot a photo books overseas. In January next year I have another new film. I already have an understanding with Bak Ji (Michael Ning). I would try to coordinate with resuming the production. I hope to finish it before the end of the year. (Is Emperor interested in investing?) Yes, but a lot of documents and financing are involved, I would quietly wait for good news. (Would you invest personally?) How can I? I am just a speck of dust. If I have to spit out the salary to help I wouldn't mind, but it just wouldn't help much." * (2019/11/01) Shi Nansun and Hong Kong film scholar Ngai Kwan Chi attended the 3rd Ping Yao International Film Fesival's "Shi Nansun: Nansun's Northern Expedition" forum. Shi Nansun started in the film industry in the 80s, from the nucleus of Cinema City to director Tsui Hark's film producer. Shi Nansun became one of the promoters of the Hong Kong film golden 30 years. In the past ten years, movies that Shi Nansun produced like THE FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE (LUNG MOON FEI GAP), DETECTIVE DEE (DIK YUN KIT), THE TAKING OF TIGER MOUNTAIN (CHI CHUI WAI FU SHAN), JOURENY TO THE WEST: THE DEMONS STRIKE BACK had decent box office performance in Mainland China. The Tsui Hark directed THE TAKING OF TIGER MOUNTAIN even blazed the trail for Hong Kong director participation in Mainland propaganda films. In the just passed National Day slot, propaganda films like THE CLIMBER (Director Daniel Lee Yan Kong), THE PILOT (Director Andrew Lau Wai Keung) were made by Hong Kong directors. Ngai Kwan Chi said about this subject, "These movies need to be rapidly finished in a very short periods. They require professional producer and director teams, which are Hong Kong directors' natural advantage." Shi Nansun said, "Hong Kong directors' 'essay test' taking abilities are very strong. They would've never imagined that they would really have planes and cannons (for the productions). The Mainland's strong environment and resource is impossible for Hong Kong to fulfill." "How long would such an advantage endure?" Ngai Kwan Chi's question led Shi Nansun to think about Hong Kong film's future. "The world is changing, if we don't change, we can easily be eliminated. Over a decade ago, Hong Kong established the Hong Kong Film Development Council in order to promote industry development even better. In addition many projects that target young directors started and would have their respective financial assistance to encourage new directors." Shi Nansun said. Earlier Shi Nansun received the Pingyao International Film Festival's "Chinese film overseas contribution award" for her contribution to film. Shi Nansun hoped that she would be able to promote Chinese films to go out so even more people in the world would understand China through film and increase mutual understanding between different cultures. * (2019/10/31) The Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Miriam Yeung Chin Wa, Alex Man Chi Leung, Cheung Tat Ming, Nina Paw Hee Ching starred, Wong Hing Fan directed I'M LIVIN' IT (MAK LO YUN) became a part of 32nd Tokyo International Film Festival Asian Future section. Two days ago its world premiere took place. The intricate performance touched fans and viewers from Hong Kong, Japan and overseas, as many broke into tears. After the screening the film received 5 minute long applause. Kwok Fu Sing in the film played an unemployed and downtrodden financial elite, Sing Sing in order to shape the character revealed that at night he would visit these 24 hour fast food shops to experience the "McRefugee" actual condition. Sing Sing said, "I really was moved. When I watched this film with the audience the experience was very deep. My character touched me. Actually every actor was very focused. I hope to be able to make a movie that the entire world would understand." Working with Yeung Chin Wa for the first time on film, Sing Sing praised her as being very suitable for the role. He said, "Chin Wa is very smart and truss the director. Each actor tells a story of different human nature and brings about a movie of love to everyone; congratulation to the director for such a good performance from his first film." The event also arranged for an autograph session for 100 viewers. Because the overwhelming viewer response, although the remaining hundreds of viewers did not receive a film poster, they were still able to come in close contact with Sing Sing and Chin Wa. * (2019/10/31) The 16th Hong Kong Asian Film Festival 2019 two nights ago held an opening ceremony. CIAO UFO (JOI GEIN UFO) and LION ROCK (SI JI SHAN SEUNG) became this year's opening films. Artists Michelle Wai Sze Nga, Alex Lam Tak Shun, Michael Ning (Bak Ji), Wong Yau Nam and others appeared. Carlos Chan Ka Lok served as the film festival ambassador. Lam Tak Shun and Wai Sze Nga worked together for the first time on the film LION ROCK, in which they played a couple. Lam Tak Shun praised her as a good co-star, as they were able to make up for the other's shortcoming. He admired her courage and focus the most. They even had a bed scene, but they only chatted in bed. Lam Tak Shun said that watching this scene back, the dialogue made him tear eyed. Wai Sze Nga continued, "In the film I am the woman behind him, with a line that spoke of the pain of women, 'If there will be next life, I definitely won't choose you.' (Is Lam Tak Shun the type you like?) Absolutely, he is so handsome. However he has a special quality. Whenever he does something wrong as long as he smiles and says sorry to you, the other half would soften and definitely forgive him. Thus the women around him have to be careful, being a friend would be a little better." They would like the chance to work together again. Are they confident that they would become a "couple team"? Wai Sze Nga said, "I hope next time we can make a romance." Lam Tak Shun grinned and said, "I will try to get the production started." Wong Yau Nam got along very well with the child actor who played him. Originally named Wong Tak Him, Yau Nam said, "We are both called Him Jai. Actually at first we looked for child actors as we shot, because finding someone who had two dimples and was able to remember the line really wasn't easy. The director said that Him Jai's mischievous personality was like mine. He has liked acting since he was very little." Yau Nam earlier guest starred in the new film ONE SEC (YUT MIU KUEN WONG), in which he also worked with a child actor. He even had to slap the child actor in front of his parents, which he was very reluctant to do but also very awkward! Speaking of Shine's break up, Yau Nam said, "Early this year we met and decided to work on our development and focus on our own work. Earlier the management company has already responded. Ultimately we will reunite at a suitable time. (Has your work been affected?) I haven't thought much about it, when I am not working I would practice my guitar playing. I would fully prepare and improve myself." Michael Ning (Bak Ji)'s film with Kenny Kwan Chi Bun and Cherry Ngan Cheuk Ling, SINGER AND STRANGER (YUM SING DIK NEI) suddenly halted production. Bak Ji two nights ago revealed that because one of the investor backed out, the production had to find new financing. Right now he is waiting for work to resume. He said, "The film for now has completed half its production, the final notice was around Kwan Chi Bun's concert. It would be very regrettable if it would be scrapped. As far as I know the director is applying for funding with the government. He has edited some footage to apply and the reaction has been pretty good. Thus the director and everyone are confident that work would resume at the end of the year." As for messing up other projects, he said, "It would, but everyone are united to finish this because the film is great. We still haven't reached the meat of the shoot, which would be about forming a band to participate in a music festival. It would be its biggest scene." Bak Ji ran into this type of situation for the first time. He joked that he might have made less movies. Has he been paid in full? He said, "Because the film hasn't been completed, not getting the final payment yet is very normal. It absolutely isn't late or owed salary situation." * (2019/10/30) The Fung Chih Chiang (Fung Chi Keung) directed and written suspense A WITNESS OUT OF THE BLUE (FAN JUI YIN CHEUNG) starred Louis Koo Tin Lok, Jessica Hester Hsuan (Suen Huen), Louis Cheung Kai Chung and Cherry Ngan Cheuk Ling. In the story a fugitive was found dead in an industrial building but the loot vanished. The only witness to the murder was a parrot. As the police began its investigation it discovered a case within a case, from which the mystery of the murderer was uncovered. Using a parrot as the only surviving witness of the murder, Fung Chih Chiang said that he had a parrot at home when he was little. When Mama was not at home and he would watch television instead of doing homework, Mama would find out anyway. Thus he suspected that the parrot told on him. He said, "If the parrot was the witness then it would know about the entire murder. The parrot only has the intelligence of a 5 year old and at the same time it has the ability to speak. I thought that Cheung Kai Chung as a cop taking a statement from the parrot would be pretty interesting, so the story developed from there." Fung Chi Keung said that the parrot disliked heat. It had special personnel to care for it on the set, and a fan to cool it down. However Cheung Kai Chung was afraid of parrots but he had no idea. He said, "When I first discussed the script with Cheung Kai Chung, I told him that this character would act with a parrot. I even asked him if he was afraid of animals? He said no problem at all. I didn't know until later when I read his interviews." Shooting a jewelry store robbery scene at an actual location, Fung Chi Keung stated that since all the preparation was done before hand it went very smoothly. The only concern was rain. Instead the most difficult part of having a dozen or so actors appearing in this scene was how to express each person's personality and their connections. For him each scene would be about each character, even gun fights and action scenes would be able to express the characters' emotions. This film the most important difference between this film and other action films. When choosing to write a suspense, did he consider that the audience would have an easier time getting into it? Fung Chi Keung said, "My method is to get into each character to look at the whole thing once. No matter the size of the role, I would look at the entire incident from a creator's angle. After getting into character I would naturally know what to do. I would pretend that I am Suen Huen, Goo Jai, Sit Hoi Kei, using every angle to look at this matter. Naturally the whole thing would come alive." [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. TA KUNG PAO, OCTOBER 31 2019, THE WEEK IN FILM SCHOOL BULLYING, NO ONE IS A BYSTAND In recent days a 13 year old is accused of killing a 10 year old girl after attempting sexual assault in the Mainland, but because the accused is under than age of 14 he has no reached the age of legal responsibility. According to the law he cannot be charged with a felony and is sentenced to government juvenile detention. The case led to discussions of underage criminals in the society. A film that examines school bullying BETTER DAYS is released right on time. - SIU WAI Since the law has difficulty with prosecuting the young, the adolescent world in the film becomes a survival of the fittest jungle. The Zhou Dongyu played Chen Nian is like a young beast that stumbles into the jungle and is on full alert at all times. The Jackson Yee played Xiao Bei is the guardian angel that hides his face behind her. One of them is a top student who is full of hope amidst bullying, and the other is a hopeless youth who wanders on the edge of society and fights to collect debs for others everyday. A chance encounter brings the two lonely adolescents closer together and thus finding release and warmth from each other. Justice System Fails This movie about school bullying shows two things about violence, with no set direction and cannot be controlled. In the opening Xiao Bei says that this world only has two types of people, the bully and the bullied. Most of the youth in the film are not just the culprit or the victim. The bullied can become the bully in any second, the bully has no idea when he or she would become the new victim; Xiao Bei everyday either beats up someone or takes a beating; Chen Nian is the bullied -- faced with violence she looks on coldly as if she is condoning the abuse. Yet because of a kind deed after Hu Xiaode's suicide she rapidly is pushed into the position of the next victim; Wei Lai is the bully group's female boss, but at home she has to tolerate a yearlong cold violence from her father; Xu Wei is Wei Lai's vassal, an awkward bully who never imagines that one day she would become the target of bullying. The violence of Wei Lai's group worsens and even becomes out of control, as they go from the jungle of youth to breaking the law. After the films' release, viewers continued to share their experience of being bullied on social media and made everyone realize that bullying actually is happening all around them. Ridicule, mockery, beating without severe consequence, such behavior is hard to involve the law. The justice system fails here; teachers and parents have difficulties relating to school bullying, as victim blaming is often seen. Thus bullying becomes an easily overlooked corner that leaves tremendous psychological trauma to youth. The measuring scale of the adolescent world is completely different from the adult world, on this scale the weight of life is too light while the weight of emotions is too heavy. In the film, young people display a numbness to death; When faced with classmate's death Wei Lai is completely indifferent, Xu Wei even breaks into laughter. The Huang Jue played veteran cop does not believe that Xiao Bei would take the blame for Chen Nian, but the young cop tells him, "You and I wouldn't, but they are still young". Sourced From Family Trauma Past school bullying films like CONFESSIONS and MOONLIGHT respectively explore the cause of bullying from the collective indifference, racial and sexual orientation bias; the 2003 Cannes Film Festival Palme d'Or prize winning ELEPHANT from multiple perspectives, through trivial life details displayed the process of a bullied student becoming a school shooting culprit; WONDER uses a way that is full of positivity to tell how to overcome bias and bullying. This time BETTER DAYS provides a very "Chinese" point of view of school bullying: starting with the bullying incident, the film begins an examination of the layers of families and social classes behind the problem. The most primary three youths in the story, Xiao Bei, Chen Nian, Wei Lai although have completely different family backgrounds all have a unfit father and an impotent mother. The neglect or lack of family education becomes the reason for the creation of bullying on the surface. The deeper layer reason has to go to the background of the entire story, the National Higher Education Entrance Examination. For Mainland youth, the higher education examination standard is one of the most primary and the most effective way for them to escape from their original family and realize class elevation. Because the examination is excessively important, something as "trivial" as bullying would make room for it -- "tolerate it a little and it will be gone." Chen Lian's classmate tells her. Yet where does she go after it is gone? When Wei Lai's obviously better educated and financially extraordinary parents make excuses and defend Wei Lai's bullying behavior, undoubtedly it makes people feel hopeless; is this the goal of getting into a prestigious university and becoming a member of the upper class? Fortunately the director in the end gives a warm ending. Years later Chen Lian becomes a teacher and uses education to affect and help students who are bullied in class. In this film. actors Zhou Dongyu and Jackson Yee's performances are very exciting. Zhou Dongyu completely exceeds her performances in movies like SOUL MATE and US AND THEM. Her tears, freckles and even shadows are full of drama, each of her crying scenes are clearly layered and different; making his big screen debut, Jackson Yee is full of potential. Natural and relaxed, his eyes are full of drama and strong explosiveness. Worthy of a mention is that this is a film that is very cinematic in terms of visual and audio language. Cinematographer Yu Jingping used a lot of handheld photography and close up shots to express the characters' isolation and helplessness outstandingly, the environmental violence and invasiveness that Zhou experienced. Director Derek Tsang Kwok Cheung's ability to tell the story with the camera also exceeds expectation, as he has a better grasp of the subject than in his previous film SOUL MATE. He is able to maintain the delicate balance between commercial and art film. Conceivably BETTER DAYS will be one of the strong competitors in various film awards next year.
