Two nights ago she appeared at the Beijing International Film Festival closing ceremony to accept her Best Supporting Actress award. Tung Tung said that she was happy to see her grandmother witnessing her award acceptance on television without blinking, as she has never seen her grandmother so happy. Tung Tung said, "Thank you jury, thank you for your recognition. Thank you director Mr. Chen Jianbin, and everyone who have contributed to this film. I hope to have the chance to keep making movies in the future." "Thank you again to the Beijing International Film Festival jury, and all the elders. I would also like to thank everyone who have contributed to the film. This experience to me is very valuable. By doing this, some of my preconceived notions have been broken. I feel this is a very valuable lesson, from which have learned a lot. Thank you very much to Mr. Chen Jianbin, and Ms. Zhou Xun for their guidance to me during the shoot, as well as support and encouragement. As for later, I feel I should take one step at a time and focus on what I am doing right now." As for characters that she would like to try in the future, she said, "I don't have any idea about what kind of character I want to try, if I run into one that I like then I would try it." She again thanked the Beijing International Film Festival. "Because I have never seen my grandmother this happy, my grandmother is watching the television at home without blinking at all. Haha, so I am very grateful for her to be able to experience this feeling." THE ELEVENTH CHAPTER starred Zhou Xun. Tung Tung in the film played mother and daughter with her. Chen Jianbin in the film played Tung Tung's father and Zhou Xun's husband. * (2019/04/22) Susan Shaw Yam Yam two nights ago attended a charity event. Speaking of veteran actor Shum Wai, Shaw Yam Yam admitted that his condition was less than optimistic. After three days at the hospital the doctor already suggested pulling the plug because Shum Wai already had no expression, no movement, only his brain was not dead yet as the respirator kept him alive. Shaw Yam Yam said that in the past few days show business people have been working hard on finding Shum Wai's relatives and finally was able to reach Shum Wai's daughter in Singapore. She said, "A director knew she was in Singapore. Originally we told her that she would only need to sign to authorize Shum Wai's manager to take him off the machine, if not the daily treatment cost would be over 10,000 RMB. However his daughter waned to personally send her father on his final journey, his mother was also a end stage cancer patient. She was unable to accept both parents' passing at the moment. Finally her mama permitted her to go to Beijing to see her father off." Sister Yam Yam said that during the visit with Shum Wai's daughter Shum Wai was alert for a short time, able to open his eyes and cry. He also thanked those who helped him with gesture. His daughter asked him whether he would want to be saved in an emergency. Shum Wai nodded at the time so he was not taken off the respirator. As for medical cost, Sister Yam Yam revealed that many show business friends have offered donations. All the hospital bills have been paid. The Performing Artist Guild also sent representatives to Beijing to get an understanding of the situation, and the stuntman association would also fully assist. The doctors currently kept Shum Wai alive with the respirator and drugs. Sister Yam Yam also praised Shum Wai's daughter. "She isn't an industry insider. She has not seen her father in several decades and her mother was in danger. Under such conditions she was still willing to visit her father. I was very moved. I could only comfort her that life was unexpected." * (2019/04/21) The Nick Cheung Ka Fai and Zhang Han starred crime action film HYPNOTIZE THE JURY (CHUI MIN CHOI KUET) held a Beijing press conference. The event had "bomb" decorations, claiming that the two were "kidnapped". In the end they broke through and appeared. Ka Fai in the film played a jury member who had to challenge the Hong Kong legal system loophole with hypnosis. At the event he messed up his on screen relationship with Zhang Han, calling his "brother in law" "uncle" and broke the tension as the audience cracked up. * (2019/04/21) After the news of Shum Wai's critical condition surfaced, his friend Yang Yi received many Hong Kong artists' blessing and comfort. Among them Tin Kai Man, Louis Koo Tin Lok and Chin Kar Lok clearly said that they would fully support Shum Wai's medical assistance effort and would continue to follow up. Susan Shaw Yam Yam immediately through friends wired 60,000 yuan RMB to provide support for Shum Wai's medical treatment. Natalie Meng Yao also provided cash assistance right away and said that she would be willing to provide continuing assistance. Yang Yi revealed that Shum Yi's condition remained critical but the hospital has already formed a special medical treatment team for him. * (2019/04/20) Artists Rose Chan Ka Wun, Jennifer Yu Heung Yi and Venus Wong Man Yik earlier were hosts and performers at the 38th Hong Kong Film Awards. On the rare occasion of working together, some online joked that their "faces clashed" as they could not tell them apart! Rose two days ago posted their photo. "I always hear people say that these three people have a strong resemblance. The photo tells the truth." Yu Heung Yi commented that she and Rose had a higher likelihood for "face clash". * (2019/04/20) Artist Francis Ng Chun Yu's 11 year old son Feynman became a second generation star after working with him on a Mainland variety program. The Chun Yu directed new film CHUEN YING TUEN FOR (TRANSITION TEAM) needed a child, so he lured his son with cash, toys and fun to coax him into performing. In the film Chun Yu played an over the hill Best Actor and played a pair of "fake father and son" with Feynman. Chun Yu was asked how his son's performance and acting in the film were. He mercilessly said, "Too rotten!" He also said that in the end he paid his son HK$ 500. * (2019/04/20) Linah Matsuoka starred in the film DECEPTION OF THE NOVELIST (JOK GA DIK FONG YIN: BUK JUNG YAU JUI)'s official trailer and poster have been released. She could not be hotter in only a lingerie and feather angel look. As the writer Justin Cheung Kin Sing looked like a happy warm man with wife and daughter, but hooked up with the passionate beauty tenant Matsuoka. They were caught cheating at home and she even extorted HK$ 10 million from him. Speaking of the intimate scene with Matsuoka, Cheung Kin Sing said, "This is a suspect thriller, who is the killer is the real focus. I have made several category III films since I started, the most extreme was DUE WEST: OUR SEX JOURNEY (YUT LO HEUNG SAI). They aren't about how enjoyable they really are, but whether the audience are comfortable with them. Actually shooting them were rather tough, they required camera displacement and rehearsal, and keeping bad takes to a minimum." * (2019/04/20) The 68 year old veteran actor Shum Wai excelled in playing villain roles. With the film LONG ARM OF THE LAW (SAN GONG KEI BING) he won the Hong Kong Film Award Best Supporting Actor. Yesterday Shum Wai was rumored to be critically ill at a Beijing hospital from pneumonia and respiratory system failure, which led to organ capability damage. He was once in a coma and in the intensive care unit. His friend revealed to the media that a friend covered Shum Wai's hospital cost but still needed HK$ 60,000 for surgery. The friend said that Shum Wai's daughter came to visit but she too was not in good financial condition. She was unable to pay the amount and hoped to find friends to help. The Performing Artist Guild's secretary general Candy Yu On On said that if Shum Wai's family and friends have any need, the Guild certainly would help. * (2019/04/19) Ben Yuen Fu Wa yesterday appeared on Nancy Sit Ka Yin's radio program. He revealed after winning the Best Supporting Actor Hong Kong Film Award he has been working nonstop, as he was busy with a play rehearsal and two movies. For now he still has not had time to celebration. In addition Louis Koo Tin Lok was not in Hong Kong, so he would wait until his return and choose a date to celebrate. His friends were very busy anyway as getting together would be very hard for modern people. Did Yuen Fu Wa get a raise after the awards? He said, "I can't take things too far, I can't be greed. I am fine with getting what I should. Based on the fact that I want to act, I would no matter how much I would get paid. However not getting paid would be impossible." Speaking of friend Louisa So Yuk Wa joking about a double wedding with Yuen Fu Wa. Yuen Fu Wa said, "She is just joking, for now I have no plan to wed and haven't had the time to think about it. No one should be too impulsive with marriage. My girlfriend and I are already used to our current lifestyle. We have our own ways. Mutual respect is how everyone can get along." * (2019/04/18) The film about China women's national volleyball team two days ago held a launch ceremony at the China women's national volleyball training center in Zhangzhou, Fujian. Aside from director Peter Chan Ho Sun, China women's national volleyball team head coach Lang Ping, former China women's national volleyball team head coach Chen Zhonghe, other guests included the national sports, film and art ministry officials, athletes Zhang Changning and Liu Xiaotong attended as well. Director Chan said that China women's volleyball may not guarantee victory but it has to take risk. From coaches Yuan Weimin to Chen Zhonghe and Lang Ping they all took risks. He hoped that this film would show the audience the women's volleyball risk taking spirit that he understands. At the event, Director Chan Ho Sun spoke about watching his first China women's volleyball match at the 1978 Asia Games in Bangkok. He was 16 at the time, it was also Lang Ping's first overseas competition. When Team China appeared the hot blooded atmosphere was still memorable to him today. He never would have imagined that now he would be able to personally adapt the China women's volleyball story to the silver screen. The release would be in 2020 when the Tokyo Olympic Games would take place. He hoped through the film to cheer on the China women's volleyball team in preparation for the Tokyo Games. Director Chan Ho Sun even presented an autographed copy of the first film poster to the China women's national volleyball team. On the poster was a close up shot of a well worn white volleyball to remind people of the China women's volleyball team's tough training. The team also presented him with an autographed volleyball in return. The launch ceremony took place in Zhangzhou because the venue was the earliest training base for women's volleyball and once nurtured the glorious history of "five straight championships" for China women's volleyball. It was also the "hometown" that Lang Ping talked about, the place that symbolized women's volleyball "origin". This time was also the 46th time the women's national team returned to Zhangzhou for a closed door training in preparation for the upcoming world volleyball championship, women's volleyball World Cup and 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games preliminary matches. China women's volleyball has had a long history and held a special place in the hearts of Chinese people. Chan Ho Sun dared to make such a subject and schedule the film for a Spring Festival release, the pressure he faced was beyond description. Chan Ho Sun admitted that the film would cover 40 years, concentrating several generations of Chinese people's hot blooded memories of women's volleyball into two hours was not easy at all. "Like China women's volleyball, although victory isn't certain we risked everything. From Yuan Weimin to Chen Zhonghe to Coach Lang Ping, they all took risks. The burden Coach Lang Ping would face at the Olympics next year would be greater than mine. I hope this film would show the audience the women's volleyball spirit that I understand." Because women's volleyball athletes must have professional skills and height, casting was an important part and baffled Chan Ho Sun. When asked if he would use professional athletes, he said that suggestion was being considered. Everyone was the most concerned with who would play the two legendary coaches Lang Ping and Chen Zhonghe. Both coaches would respect the director's decision. Coach Chen Zhonghe humorously said, "Of course a little more handsome would be even better." What would Long Ping liked to see in the film? He said that no one would know the result of the hard work everyday, but they were all chasing their dreams. He believed that Director Chan Ho Sun would be able to grasp this subject. Chen Zhonghe and Coach also hoped through the film to spread the women's volleyball spirit and affected young people in particular. As early as two years ago Director Chan Ho Sun has already been preparing for the film. Aside from inviting gold label screenwriter Zhang Ji to write the script but also watching women's volleyball matches around the world with the team for research. On this trip to Zhangzhou, he not only participated in the launch ceremony but also watched the China women's volleyball team in a closed door training and personally experienced the intense and fiery atmosphere live. Director Chan Ho Sun, China women's national volleyball head coach Lang Ping, former China women's national volleyball head coach Chen Zhonghe attended the launch ceremony. The film will officially open on Lunar New Year's Day 2020. * (2019/04/18) Louisa So Yuk Wa and boyfriend Poon Chan Leung, Teresa Mo Shun Kwan and others two nights ago attended a skin care product event. Although he did not win the Hong Kong Film Award Best Supporting Actor, Poon Chan Leung said that he had Ah So's "kisses" to make up for it. He was not unhappy. "As early as 21 years ago THE MAD PHOENIX (NAM HOI SUP SAM LONG) got me a Supporting Actor nomination, but I regretted not attending. This time was like having fun at a theme park for a night." Ah So said, "I am probably the happiest, earlier we went on a double date dinner with Yuen Fu Wa. We stated that whoever won would pay for dinner, so we got a meal out of it." When would they get married? Ah So said that Yuen Fu Wa suggested for them to have a double wedding, but Poon Chan Leung felt that separating them into two fun days would be even better. Actually they already had plans long ago. Ah So added, "We are just too lazy!" With the good word of mouth for MEN ON THE DRAGON (YIK LAU DAI SHOOK), the director was planning to make another story with the original team. Poon Chan Leung also looked forward to acting opposite Yuen Fu Wa. Mo Shun Kwan said that she was sexier on the Hong Kong Film Award night, but she did so out of respect for the event. Although she was already 59, she was said to look like Nancy Wu Ting Yan at the Hong Kong Film Awards. Mo Shun Kwan said, "Shouldn't you say Wu Ting Yan look like me? I am older than her! I don't feel it, maybe they said I look like her Mama. I am happy though, since I am more than 10 years older than her!" [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. TA KUNG PAO, APRIL 18 2019, EAST AND WEST FILM 12 SUICIDAL TEENS: REASONS FOR HOPELESSNESS The first line from Camus' THE MYTH OF SISYPHUS is "There is but one truly serious philosophical problem and that is suicide." Perhaps when Japanese writer Tow Ubukata came up with the story for 12 SUICIDAL TEENS thought of this famous quote. From novel to manga to live action film, what kind of life and death consideration would the audience see? - HUNG KWONG In the end, the idea of 12 SUICIDAL TEENS is to decide life and death through group discussion, although it uses the term "euthanasia" to whitewash the cruel truth of suicide. 12 teens who do not know each other connect through the internet. They gather at an abandoned hospital to plan euthanasia (group suicide). The original plan is for the 12 to get together and discuss before voting. When the vote is unanimous then the plan would be executed. Yet when they all get together, they realize that a mystery corpse that does not belong to these 12 people. This probably is when the "euthanasia plan" that no "13th people" would know shows its crack. In the end who is this invited victim? Is this suicide appointment an escape for hopeless teens or a murder plot of a mysterious killer? The Search For Death Becomes Solving A Mystery The mystery of 12 SUICIDAL TEENS starts this way. Although the space does not restrict outside contact, the mystery this film has to solve more or less is a closed quarter murder mystery. On the other hand, originally they come to decide their fate. Later they decide to solve the mystery. 12 people have something that they are hiding from the others but also have to convince others. It is a rather complicated situation. This type of mystery films actually has a problem. Unless you fool the audience and hide some of the story, otherwise from the story's point of view viewers can more or less guess who is "not" the killer/culprit. Films with an extra character like this also have a very hard time with telling a story from just one point of view. They almost have to use an all knowing point of view and jump between characters. Thus, the so-called mystery seems somewhat like the screenwriters are hiding part of the story from the audience. Looking back it is not too fun. The director has to rely on his grasp of pace for the audience to fall into the story in order to keep them watching. However, this film's focus is not in resolving the mystery; but through the 12 people mutual exploration and discussion to uncover the mystery of why they want to die. Such popular novel film adaptations have another difficulty. Since viewers who have read the original work or have seen different text adaptations were in the majority, how would they go to see the movie or gone and not cut up chairs since they already knew the ending? This of course relies on the abilities of screenwriters' storytelling and atmosphere creating. Director Yukihiko Tsutsumi has had experience on such a subject. Earlier he directed three installments of 20TH CENTURY BOYS that were based on years of classic manga. Due to the complicated story and the enormous world view, viewers who have not read the original would find them hard to understand. Now this 12 SUICIDAL TEENS in comparison is much simpler. The director can completely use control of rhythm for the audience to fall into their discussions about life and death and neglect the "resolving mystery" part. In the entire film all the characters with lines are these 12 teens. Their background, stance, personality have to have rather large differences for the debates to have spark. Among them, idol actor Kenna Hashimoto as the idol actor character is the most spotlight stealing one. However despite all being high school students, the differences between 12 people rely even more on appearances to stand out. The actors' performance more or less gives people a typical impression. Examining Life and Death Perhaps, this film makes this writer feel somewhat disappointed in with the reasons that these teens want to die. (Before hand I have never read the original work or other adaptation.) In the end they are all cliches, like unhappy life, enormous hardship and the sort. Among them very few have real moral/personal struggle. Some of the reasons even seem childish and could not be said as truly facing this problem of teen suicide (which we would not discuss in detail to avoid spoilers). Yet this perhaps is the difficulty of a group discussion on this subject. The so-called philosophical question of suicide is something that everyone has to face alone, problems like depression cannot be resolved just by talking. Thus many suicide cases would surprise those around them. To commit suicide or not is not a good topic for philosophy class discussion, because the conclusion would always be keep living. On the other hand, perhaps this is exactly the goal that the film wants to gather people who want to die to discuss? 2. TA KUNG PAO, APRIL 18 2019, LIGHT SHADOW PATH PROBLEMS THIS HONG KONG FILM AWARDS REFLECT PROJECT GUTENBERG (MO SEUNG) won seven awards at the 38th Hong Kong Film Awards to become the big winner. The result did not have much suspense, as several important categories could basically be predicted already. This was because before the Hong Kong Film Awards, several industry affiliated groups and the Film Critic Society (and evecn the Golden Horse Awards)'s results would yield the favorites to win. This year they were even rather accurate, as Best Film, Director, Screenplay, Actor, Actress were almost all within expectations. Votes from members of the affiliated industry associations took up 25% of the total votes. For example the Directors' Guild at the Spring banquet chose Felix Chong Man Keung for Best Director, proving that he had the most votes within the group. Since their votes took up 25%, his chances of winning were very high. As for Best Actor and Best Actress, the winners of the Directors' Guild and the Screenwriters' Guild were both STILL HUMAN (LUN LOK YUN) and THREE HUSBANDS (SAM FU). They also won the even earlier Film Critic Society awards. The results were no difference. The only one was Best Screenplay. At the Screenwriters' Guild voting, STILL HUMAN edged out PROJECT GUTENBERG. STILL HUMAN won the Critic Society ward. Thus the reason for STILL HUMAN's defeat was that it did not have as many of the remaining 75% votes. Because STILL HUMAN last year only had a limited release (to meet the Hong Kong Film Awards criteria), fewer in the industry has seen it than PROJECT GUTENBERG. Winning films that were not officially released last year aside from STILL HUMAN (three awards) also included THREE HUSBANDS (Best Actress). The Hong Kong Film Awards' "first run public ticket sale release" definition was "not less than five shows at a cinema with over 50 seats for seven days in a row". Thus some films in order to qualify for competition would make such a limited release, invited industry insiders to attend in hopes of the award helping the later release's momentum. In the past very few films would follow such a method to win awards, thus for years this rule has not been changed. This year both films had many nominations and were able to win in the end. Thus some began to question whether the Hong Kong Film Awards has violated its original intent. The Hong Kong Film Award is an industry event, with colleagues chosing from last year's excellent work and on and off camera elite. Thus at the same time the general public would know what we feel are good films and good talent. Yet if the film has not yet been officially released, and only a minority of people has seen it, this "sharing the joy with everyone" purpose would vanish. It would not even have any room for discussion. Would the resolution be as simple as puliing this "first run public ticket sale release" clause and changed from at least 100 to 200 shows a week? Of course not! This year's nominations almost all belonged to six films. If two were removed, you would have less and less choices. The problem in the end is that Hong Kong film's production rate and quality are both lacking. This is not a problem that the Hong Kong Film Awards can resolve, who knows if other colleagues would have caught attention to that. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] ELISA'S DAY Can : Wai Oi Lit : Leftover Love AKA : Chong Hoi Wai Oi AKA : Love Left At Sea d. It teaches audiences that even people who "lose on the starting line" can achieve victory as long as they persist. Soon after birth, Wai was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, which made him hard of hearing and even unable to walk normally. But under a strict training regimen from his mother, Wai eventually learned how to walk and was even invited into the Hong Kong Disabled Track and Field Team. Wai has participated in multiple Paralympic Games and won many gold medals. To this day, he is still the record holder for men’s 100-meter and 200-meter at the Paralympics. For his achievements, he has earned the nickname "Wizard Boy". Wai wanted to be a full-time athlete, but due to his father's work injury, he chooses to become a courier instead to support his family. He tries to balance between work and training, but his mother begins to arrange ad appearances and paid appearances on his behalf. Soon, he falls out with Fong, his coach, for neglecting his training, and he begins to fight back against his mother’s control. At the 2008 Paralympic Games, Wai finds himself under unprecedented pressure from the match and his fallout with his mother. Fortunately, Wai repaired his relationship with his mother, and he received encouragement from his father and fellow competitors before the match. Zen has to perform the hypnoses in an isolated small room secretly under the sight of six other jurors. Still, this is not the most difficult condition Zen has to face, because he is going against the most fundamental and important principle of hyposis, "The subject should be informed and understood that he/she is going to participate in hyposis; if not, the chcance of a successful hypnosis will be less than 10%."
