MISCELLANEOUS * (2019/03/13) The film THE LADY IMPROPER (FEI FUN SHOOK NUI) earned Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin a Hong Kong Film Award Best Actress nomination. The film has been slated for an early April official release. Ah Sa admitted that the story called for her intimate scene with Wu Kang-Jen. "When I evaluate scripts now, I would do so just for the role and the story to see if there would be room for me to demonstrate my acting abilities. In the end the character required nudity, I usually wouldn't take it too far; I feel, Asian viewers are more conservative. The structure and restrictions would be greater, foreign films would be taking off clothes and have nudity all over the place. I hope through this opportunity to remove the bias the audience would have so it can directly see the story and the message the film would bring out, instead of focusing on which female star would show what." Working with Kang-Jen for the first time, Ah Sa had nothing but praise. "He is an actor who really wants to act well, very focused, serious. When I worked with him I was very at ease, I respect him very much!" Kang-Jen described his first Hong Kong film like a vacation, Ah Sa, the director, the producer and even all the crew were great to him. The entire experience was a lot of fun. "Although the shoot segments and procedures were similar to Taiwan's, the language difference, the change to Cantonese and the difference in the environment, I seemed to be very remote from the set. When observing the crew, I seemed to have become another identity; while in Hong Kong I lived in To Kwa Wan. I really like the culture, the aura there, I am fortunate because of the film production I was able to be connected to the Hong Kong domestic culture." * (2019/03/13) The Kevin Cheng Ka Wing and Raymond Lam Fung worked together again after 14 years, in the film P STORM (P FUNG BO) they fought to the sea and sky for Chrissie Chau Sau Na. P STORM will open on April 4th, in order to bring new surprises to the STORM film series viewers, aside from a richer cast the action designs also had great breakthrough. Among them would be an enormous helicopter fight scene. Aside from shooting in an actual helicopter, the film also invested a million on creating a full scale fiberglass helicopter for the stunts inside the cockpit. This helicopter shoot was only a challenge for the production team but also for Cheng Ka Wing, Lam Fung and Chau Sau Na, because in the film Ka Wing in order to save Chau Sau Na fought with Lam Fung on the helicopter. Lam Fung in order to push him out of the flight even fell into the sea. Fighting in the narrow cockpit, bruises were inevitable for them. However they were still very professional. Actually this was Ka Wing and Lam Fung's first action scene together. Ka Wing said, "Lam Fung and I have known each other for a long time, but action scene wise we have had zero. This shoot was the first time I had any fight action with him, Ah Fung is rather agile." Lam Fung joked, "This time I have to thank Ka Wing for taking it easy on me, but aside from the fight inside the helicopter many fights took place in the prison too. Almost everyday we were fighting." After the helicopter fight, Ka Wing, Lam Fung and Chau Sau Na finally jumped from the exploding helicopter to the sea. Fortunately the shoot took place in the heat of the summer, the actors this time truly took the shoot to the air and the sea. Chau Sau Na although did not need to participate in the stunt but had a lot of emotional scene. "This time I have more emotional scenes, mainly I fainted in the helicopter, struggled and woke up after the struggle. However I am very grateful for the two men taking care of me. Because the space inside the helicopter was rather tight, I could've easily been hit." * (2019/03/13) Director Andrew Lau Wai Keung with the film INFERNAL AFFAIRS (MO GAN DOH) was remade into the Hollywood film THE DEPARTED. Yesterday Lau Wai Keung was rumored to be making the English version of YOUNG AND DANGEROUS (GOO WAT JAI), that he has come to an agreement with Pulse Film to make the rise of YOUNG AND DANGEROUS' Chan Ho Nam story with Hong Kong as its background and Thomas Benski, Dimitra Tsingou and Brian Levy as producers, and Lau Wai Keung would participate in the production. However after the rumor surfaced, Lau Wai Keung clarified, "Nothing like this happened, I have no idea why this rumor surfaced. Please make the clarification for me!" * (2019/03/12) Carlos Chan Ka Lok yesterday attended an event and revealed that he has been busy with the Emperor Motion Picture GUNG GUP GAU WOON (EMERGENCY RESCUE) in Xiamen. He said that when he met director Dante Lam Chiu Yin in August, he told him to learn to swim. Thus in a few short months he already learned the breast stroke and free style. Yet when he joined the team, the director kept his character from getting into the water! Ka Lok admitted that he has already in tip top shape because at each shoot he was in full gear. However he was in uniform for the entire film and did not need to show his muscles. Even Eddie Peng Yu-Yan would not have the chance to flash any flesh. He also revealed that the team will shoot an underwater scene in Mexico later, at the studio where TITANIC was shot. Ka Lok reiterated that he and Jeannie Chan Ying did not avoid each other during a photo opportunity at a charity event. "I just want to leave some freshness for the audience, wee will shoot a promotional video together today. (Would you publicize your romance during the promotion?) No romance! We are just friends." * (2019/03/12) The Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild 30th anniversary dinner and awards took place two nights ago. Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet Ngor was invited to speak as a guest. The event presented seven awards. Best Film went to PROJECT GUTENBERG (MO SEUNG). Felix Chong Man Keung received Best Director. Anthony Wong Chau Sun and Chloe Maayan won Best Actor and Best Actress. Chau Sun took the opportunity to thank the government for allocating HK$ 1 billion for the Film Development Fund, thank Chief Executive Lam Cheng Yuet Ngor for supporting Hong Kong film's development and the crowd returned with enthusiastic applause. PROJECT GUTENBERG's director Felix Chong Man Keung also won Best Director. Best New Actor went to STILL HUMAN's Crisel Consunji. STILL HUMAN's director Oliver Chan Siu Keun won New Director. The "Executive Committee Special Prize" went to I'VE GOT THE BLUES (SHUI DAI HUNG JAU DIK YUN). Passing away at the end of last year, Ringo Lam Lan Tung received the "honorary award". New Directors' Guild president Cheung Yuen Ting lamented, "Last year he suddenly passed away, which was a loss to the film industry. We hereby express our deep sorrow, as we would always remember him. This award is truly deserved." When Tsui Hark accepted the award on his behalf he said, "I really miss him, his wife and son are very low key. They both have always missed Ah Tung, so they don't want to bring any sorrow to this joyous event. I would accept the award on their behalf, I hope the Guild would understand." Everyone gave a standing ovation to salute Lam Lan Tung. Winning Best Actor and Best Actress again after the Film Critic Society Awards, Chau Sun joked, "When I heard the result I froze, it is real or fake? Is producer (Fruit) Chan Gor is a strong force in the Directors' Guild? Winning this award I feel very incredible, honored and happy, because directors are the most difficult to serve organisms in the entire universe. Receiving the recognition of so many directors is the greatest achievement in my life." With Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet Ngor present, he stated that he had to say a few words to her. The entire crowd cheered. Chau Sun joked, "It's very rare, usually when I say stuff like this it gets all quiet. Over the years my name is much like Voldemort's, the film industry can't mention the name Wong Chau Sun. I really have to thank the government for allocating HK$ 1 billion to support the Hong Kong film industry. I represent myself to thank the Chief Executive for her support." Chloe Maayan really appreciated what Chau Sun said, "It's a great enjoyment, because he is very humorous." Would she like to work with Chau Sun? She said, "I would!" Chau Sun sad, "Do you want to make Roast Pork Bun (UNTOLD STORY)? Forget it! Let's make a romantic drama!" Chloe Maayan never thought that she would win an award and remained emotional. Was she more confident about winning the Hong Kong Film Award? She admitted that she had confidence and at the same time admired each nominated actress, including herself. Chau Sun reminded her not to let all the awards go to her head. Chloe Maayan hoped that they would have a chance to work together. Lau Wai Keung ended his four year presidency and handed the baton to the new president Mabel Cheung Yuen Ting. Lau Wai Keung said, "She was the vice president, we had ample communication. The Directors' Guild finance is healthy, the most important is to maintain the harmonious spirit of the Directors' Guild over the years. The new generation and the older generation would be able to talk." Cheung Yuen Ting said, "I have no pressure, I am very fortunate. I am a 'rich kid' because earlier the Guild shot the old location and made some money. Some projects have steady revenue and the government allocated HK$ 1 billion for the Film Development Fund. Everyone together would take Hong Kong film to the next level." Lau Wai Keung said from experience, "The most important to find new revenue and save on expenses, passing the torch. With steady income, let's see if she will be a big spender." Cheung Yuen Ting aid that by rule the Guild would have several million in steady fund. The Directors' Guild would also start teaching classes to help new directors with film productions." * (2019/03/12) The Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild 30th anniversary dinner and awards nights ago brought together many artists, like Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin, Karena Ng Chin Yu, Jessica C. and her husband Andy Tien (On Chi Kit), Lo Hoi Pang, Kara Wai Ying Hung, Francis Ng Chun Yu, Anthony Wong Chau Sun, Kenny Wong Tak Bun, Nancy Wu Ting Yan, Alex Fong Chung Shun, Nina Paw Hee Ching, Fiona Sit Hoi Kei, Stephy Tang Lai Yan, Shu Qi, Shawn Yue Man Lok and others. Ah Sa with the film THE LADY IMPROPER (FEI FUN SHOOK NUI) was nominated for the Hong Kong Film Award Best Actress. Would she campaign for votes at the Directors' Guild dinner? Ah Sa was resistant. "Can I get any? If it works back then SARA (CHOR GEI) would have won. Asking people to vote for me is very lame. It's hard to say out loud. Maybe I can just ask everyone to see the movie, I am cool you know." Was she more confident this time than with SARA? She said, "Every time is almost the same because each year the voters are different. It would depend on the film genre they like. (Do you know what you would wear?) Not yet, but I have started working out in preparation because I don't know what the designer would prepare for me. I haven't won Best Dressed, so I would first work hard on myself. (Are you nervous yet?) I still feel the same, everyday I have a lot of work. In addition lately I have been in film negotiation, I am only thinking about the character in my head." Karena Ng Chin Yu last year worked in the Mainland half the time. Did she have time to see her boyfriend? Chin Yu said, "Dating isn't important, if we are happy then we would when we are free. I feel work is more important. If the other half understands then that's even better. I won't consider marriage until a few years later. (Do you and your boyfriend have an understanding?) No, it's too soon. Girls have to have their careers, not to mention that I just started on television." Speaking of her old flame Raymond Lam Fung and girlfriend Zhang Xinyue would soon wed, Chin Yu said, "Rumors constantly surface, many aren't true. I no longer have any contact with him. (Are you no longer friends?) Not really. (Would you mind working together?) I am not talking anymore, if the chances arise then ask me. Actually it doesn't matter, but I feel this chance won't come. This circle has many people, we might not work together just like that." * (2019/03/12) Chow Yun Fat while working on the film GIU YEUNG SHUI YUET suffered an injury in an accident with Kenny Wong Tak Bun. Alex Fong Chung Shun was also present on the set that day. He said, "Originally he said he was fine, so when we saw blood we were very puzzled. Yet Fat Gor kept acting and didn't call for a stop. I was curious why the fake blood was so light. Its color should be darker." Fong Chung Shun joked, "Tak Bun this time is really in trouble, if he hit me he would be fine. At most he would just take me to a dinner or two. He nailed a Hollywood superstar, this time he definitely would be famous. I already told him to go to the Kowloon City Market, because lately when I went food shopping many stall owners asked me about Fat Gor's condition." Fong Chung Shun said that Fat Gor after stitches immediately came back to work. "At the time Fat Gor wanted to go to a government hospital due to the distance. I said the government hospital would definitely shave his head and also have reporters. In the end we went to a private hospital." * (2019/03/11) Mainland actor Hu Ge completed the Hong Kong run of HAMLET. Two nights ago a celebration was held. Brigitte Lin (Lam Ching Ha), Carina Lau Ka Ling, Rosamund Kwan Chi Lam, Kenny Bee (Chung Chun To) attended. Lau Ka Ling revealed that she would like to work behind the scenes and plan for an all Asian hunk version of OCEAN'S ELEVEN. The idea came from Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Takuya Kimura's photo in Japan earlier. Lau King Ling as her husband Leung Chiu Wai's manager would like to find some jobs that would excite him soon. "He didn't feel any of the choices are good enough, in other words I am not working hard enough." She reveals that she would like to work behind the scenes. "I hope I can gather a very strong team for an Asian version of OCEAN'S ELEVEN with Asia's coolest actors. Wai Jai earlier in Japan ran into Takuya Kimura and took a photo together, which inspired this idea of mine. Kimura of course is on the list, as well as Korean, Taiwan and Mainland actors. I already have a list in mind, but first I have to find someone to write the script before deciding." She stressed that she would take a role in the film. The idea would be all male, with at most a top beauty. "I am a beauty too, but off camera." She said that behind the scene she would start as a producer but she would not give up on camera performance. She said, "As long as the audience is willing to watch me, I will keep working. Because this has been my career for over 30 years, I won't give it up so easily." Speaking of Chow Yun Fat's on set injury, she said, "I don't have Fat Gor's number, I have to ask Fat Soh to find him. I heard about it from the news, it's probably a light injury. I wish Fat Gor a speedy recovery. I hope that he would be more careful from now on and not to risk his life like this." Rosamund Kwan Chi Lam praised Hu Ge. With his drama background the stage came naturally for him. Would she like to work with him on the stage? She said that she did not have the confidence. "A play has many lins and also requires a lot of time to rehearse. Earlier a movie was offered to me but I feel I didn't have the confidence, not to mention a play? So in order to work with Hu Ge, I am afraid I can only do some wining and dining." Speaking of her friend Elaine Jin (Kam Yin Ling)'s cervical cancer, Chi Chi said that she knew long ago. "I know that she is having a very tough time. She still has five more chemo treatments, which are really tough to get past. Everyone needs to encourage her. I know that Ah So (So Sze Wong) is playing mahjong with her. I don't know how to play but I can chat with her. She said that she was very upset that she could not play with my dog for six month. She would properly rest and recover. I believe she will be able to tough it out. She has always been positive." She also said that due to her mother's influence she constantly had physicals. When she found out about what happened to Kam Yin Ling she immediately had more tests. * (2019/03/11) Kay Tse On Kay and Richie Jen (Yam Yin Chai) yesterday morning attended the Cycle For Millions 2019 event as ambassadors. They were dressed like cyclists, but Kay did not have enough time to train so this year she would not participate. Siu Chai earlier participated in a charity race. Yesterday morning he started the Cycle For Millions event. He said, "After the run I felt muscle soreness. The doctor told me after gaining weight early I lost weight too fast, which led to muscle loss. I would lack calcium and potassium, earlier when I ran I showed signs of cramping. So I didn't dare to run too fast. Now I would keep aerobic exercises two or three times a week to get into shape." Siu Chai had a part in the film PAO MA. Earlier because director Doze Niu was accused of sexual assault and the production was halted. Recently the film was rumored to have a chance to resume production, would Siu Chai need to gain weight for the film again? He said that he was not sure but would have to maintain the sloppy look for the film. He said, "My wife complained about it, for this film I didn't cut my hair or shave for a year. During the shoot I couldn't wash my hair, I couldn't remember for how many days. I only knew it stank. I also had to have betel nut until I was sick of it and my teeth hurt. For the movie I couldn't do anything about that." Did his wife refuse to share a bed with him? Siu Chai said, "Don't ask about that." Siu Chai had to wait until further notice to know what to do next about PAO, but he would respect the director's idea. Originally he would begin his concert tour during the period because the film would have wrapped up production. He would lose weight and shave for his April show. He said, "For this film, I haven't taken other jobs for a year. The company told me to hurry and make money." * (2019/03/10) Eddie Peng Yu-Yan recently has been busy in the Mainland as he worked on the Dante Lam Chiu Yin directed Emperor Motion Picture GUNG GUP GAU WOON (EMERGENCY RESCUE). So far the production is near its 90th days, the team has overcome many difficulties together and everything has been rather smooth. Recently Peng Yu-Yan's office and Director Lam both posted online to clarify that the team had no plan to shoot on location in the Maldives or find local divers to assist with the production. Recently rumors on social media claimed that the team will shoot in the Maldives. Director Lam and others learned that fans wanted to participate in the production in order to get close to their idols and fell for the "scam". Although they did not suffer any monetary loss, the team has rushed to clarify the rumor. Director Lam even said, "We are waiting for the Mainland production to wrap, then we will head to shoot in Mexico. Actually many similar rumors have surfaced Earlier when we shot in a swimming pool, people took a few photos and made it sound like they were speaking for Peng Yu-Yan. We just want to remind everyone, don't believe but also remember to report such fraudulent behaviors to stop them together." Peng Yu-Yan's 37th birthday will be on the 24th, but "Demon director" Director Lam would keep him at work. The film will not complete its shoot until May at the earliest. * (2019/03/10) Chow Yun Fat earlier while working on the film GIU YEUNG SHUI YUET had an accident with Kenny Wong Tak Bun. Fat Gor remained calm and finished the scene despite having blood running down his face. While being treated Fat Gor said, "After a few stitches I will be back!" Finally Fat Gor was released from the hospital with five stitches on his left forehead, but he of course did not stop running and his daily routine. Edmond Leung Hon Man was absent due to illness. Tang Lai Yan and Fong Lik Sun kept their distance and did not pose for photos together. According to earlier online information they would be named as this year's Hong Kong Film Award hosts, but the event then denied the rumor. Tang Lai Yan said that when she first heard about it she thought it was strange. Many friends asked her about it and she believed the Hong Kong Film Award would not make such an arrangement. She also said that she and Fong Lik Sun would have many opportunities to work together, so they would feel awkward. Fong Lik Sun was unable to participate in the race due to a leg injury. He had to wear a brace and stop exercising. As for the rumor that he and Tang Lai Yan would host the Hong Kong Film Award, he said that when he heard he was very excited. If he would have the chance to host the Hong Kong Film Award he would be very happy. Would he like to work with Tang Lai Yan? He said that he would like to work with anyone. He would be OK with it if the audience wanted to see them together. They have common friends privately and they often would run into each other. Siu Chai came to Hong Kong for a few days. He revealed that many directors have approached him to discuss scripts. He thanked everyone for seeing him as an actor who put his heart into his work and be willing to give him a chance. She joked that she spared no effort for the box office. She said that fortunately this film's title had no number, unlike last time when she went to 77 audience appreciation events for 77 HEARTBREAKS (YUEN LEUNG TA 77 CHI). Did she feel exhausted from audience appreciation? Ah Sa said that audience appreciation is popular now, she would even thank just one viewer. Ah Sa said that this film's box office would already be covered if it was able to have more Hong Kong Film Development Fund allocation, since this was not a commercial film. She also revealed that this time her salary was only a little more than for SARA (CHOR GEI), because the film production budget was limited she was just helping the new director to have even more resources for film post production work. Has she worked on a film for free? She said, "Sometimes when I guest starred I would get HK$ 100 for transportation, actually it doesn't matter. Making movies isn't a money making tool." Has her boyfriend seen the film already? Ah Sa said, "Not yet, I haven't kept him from it. I kept an open mind. If he wants to watch he can. (Would you watch the movie with him?) If he asks I would." Lately Ah Sa and her boyfriend were rumored to be getting married, which Ah Sa denied and said that for now they had no plan to wed. She would inform everyone if they had any news and her boyfriend has not proposed yet. Would she agree if he did? Ka Lun worked on films JUMPING ASH (TIU FUI) and MAN ON THE BRINK (BIN YUEN YUN). His RTV era series DAI JEUNG FU was also a classic. Having worked with Ka Lun on the film MAN ON THE BRINK, director Alex Cheung Kwok Ming yesterday confirmed the news of his death on social media. He posted, "Ka Lun just passed away!" In 1978, Ka Lun formed a film company and worked with Japanese director Yukio Noda on GOLGO 13 with the first Miss Hong Kong Suen Wing Yan as the lead actress. In the late 80's Ka Lun and his wife left the film industry to immigrate to the U.S. and was in the auto sale business until several years ago when he retired. Despite his grey hair he still remained as handsome. * (2019/03/09) The 64 year old Elaine Jin (Kam Yin Ling) yesterday appeared on her "close friend" So Sze Wong's radio program. She confirmed that early this year she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She had the operation on the Lunar 5th. Because the tumor was too aggressive, she needed radiation and chemotherapy. Kam Yin Ling said, "My daughter came back to visit me before the Lunar New Year. We had to get a pap smear together and I was diagnosed with negative cells. My daughter left Hong Kong on the 27th, and on the 28th the nurse urged me to call the doctor and said that my report was iffy. On the 30th when I went to see the doctor, he told me that I had a 90% that it was cervical cancer. Because I couldn't take the pain I had a detailed examination. In the end I had to go to the hospital and go completely under for the surgery. When I was released it was the 28th before the Lunar New Year. I even tearfully dyed my grey hair, even if I was sick I had to be pretty for the New Year. At first the doctor said that they would decide on whether they could do minimal invasion surgery depending on the report, but unfortunately the doctor said that we couldn't On the Lunar 3rd I went to the hospital, on the Lunar 4th I had the endoscopy done, and on the Lunar 5th I had the operation." Ah So said that when she learned about Kam Yin Ling's cancer, she was unusually calm. "In 2005 I had breast cancer, silence from those around me was the biggest help. Don't talk about the illness or which doctor to see, leave it to her to make the decision calmly." Kam Yin Ling said, "At the time only Ah So and my best friend (Rosamund) Kwan Chi Lam knew. I want my daughter to find out the least. She is in England, so far she can't help much. She definitely would cry, cry, cry and worry, which instead would upset me. Although its' first stage, its USPC tumor is too aggressive. Three years later its chance of returning is high, and I can't have minimally invasive surgery. I must cut out the lymph node, uterus and appendix at once, and a network that resembled that the anarchoid, everything will be moved. This tumor is very sly, I will need very detailed chemo and radiation therapy. I have I will be able to keep it under control." Kam Yin Ling after the surgery told her Taiwan restaurant owner sister. She was the happiest that during the illness she and her sister were able to spend more time together. She said, "My sister came to keep me company at home after my surgery. I like being with my sister more. She isn't as frustrated. Ah So has been great too, don't misunderstand her. My sister would never stay for as long as six days and five nights in Hong Kong, I really am very happy. After decades it was the first time my sister and I had so many chats." Kam Yin Ling also said that she would need 6 chemo treatments, friends who have done said that it was a life worse than death. Ah So said, "At the time everything was wrong to her, and I couldn't eat around her. As soon as she caught the scent she would get sick. On Valentine's Day, she asked for a certain shop's chestnut cake, but the order would take a day. Luckily a friend ordered it first. We spent our Valentine's Day with chestnut cake. This cake was the first time since her illness that she said something was delicious, the first time that she didn't yell at people." During the time Kam Yin Ling felt love from many people. She said that sometimes when she did not want to eat she had to because she wanted to fight! * (2019/03/09) Teresa Mo Shun Kwan earlier was the first guest of the Emperor Group, the Hong Kong Beijing Exchange Association and others organized youth film training course, "Beijing Hong Kong Film Exchange". Sister Mo got along with the students. She encouraged students to take advantage of every chance to perform and revealed that she would like to perform an "older woman, young man" relationship with Mainland actor Hu Ge. Speaking of Sister Mo's classic film ALL'S WELL ENDS WELL (GA YAU HEI SI), a student was able to recite her character's lines perfectly and the entire audience cracked up. Sister Mo said that the most important in comedy was rhythm and reaction, anything too early or too slow would affect the audience's spot for laughter. She also urged students to take advantage of each opportunity to perform, because you would never know when your benefactor would appear. She cited an example and said that her TOMORROW IS ANOTHER DAY (WONG GUM FA) co-star Ling Man Lung, who got the chance only because Sister Mo by chance saw him as a supporting player in a play. In the play the 30 year old played a teenage student and was still very natural and memorable. Thus she recommended Ling Man Lung to the director to play her son. After 40 years in the business, she only won Best Actress last year. However Sister Mo said that this was the right time. "If ten years ago I had to make TOMORROW IS ANOTHER DAY, my daughters weren't that old yet. I wouldn't be able to know how close a mother and her children could be; now I am a mother, I have this experience and am able to reach this type of feeling." As for who she would like to work with, Sister Mo said that she would like to work with Mainland actor Hu Ge because he was handsome and a good actor. She also said that the Mainland had more and more good actors, who would thrive with local actors. The Beijing Hong Kong Film Exchange would provide over 20 students the opportunity for an exchange in Beijing. Students would first participate in six film cultural exchange events in Hong Kong, different professionals from film cultural industry were invited to share their years of experience in film industry development. They would include director Alan Mak Siu Fai, Kearen Pang Sau Wai and others. Students would be able to learn about film productions, production and acting skills, then go to Beijing for a ten day exchange. * (2019/03/08) Lam Yiu Sing for his first action film WE ARE LEGENDS (YUP TEET LUNG) not only trained in Mixed Martial Art for a month but also worked out to gain weight. He said, "Every time before the shoot I would do push ups to pump up the muscles, after the shoot went from morning to night, sometimes by nightfall I couldn't get back to the same size in the morning. I instantly shrank." He sparred for 48 hours, from a number 3 to a number 8 gale storm warning signal. He even did sit-ups on the reservoir ladder. "It was four stories high, I had a very thin line tied around me. I was pretty afraid, I really risked my life!" * (2019/03/08) Currently working on his new film GIU YEUNG SHUI YUET (PROUD SUN AGE) Chow Yun Fat earlier had an accident on the set. In the scene Kenny Wong Tak Bun was collecting a debt from Fat Gor, who was then attacked. Yet on the accident occurred, Fat Gor did not stop the shoot right away and continued to act until the entire scene performance was completed. The team on the set after collecting their wits could not help but praised, "I whole heartedly admire Fat Gor's professionalism!" At the time Fat Gor covered his head with his hand, walked off the set and sat down. Then everyone realized that two large streams of blood gradually trickled down his left cheek. The set immediately became tense as everyone wanted to check out his injury and wipe off the blood for him. Fat Gor told everyone to relax and not to worry. He also asked people for water to wash the wound, thus to be a better understanding of the condition. Fat Gor who was originally preparing lunch off the set was notified. When she saw her husband's blood covered face, she asked, "Why did this happen?" Fat Gor immediately comforted her and said it was not serious. He even asked people to show Fat Gor the wound. Because the would actually was not small, at the urging of director Poon Yiu Ming, producer Wong Bun, action director Lee Chung Chi and others Fat Gor took everyone's advice and went to the hospital for treatment. Before going, Fat Gor still continuously comforted everyone, "Stay calm, don't panic!" He also said to the director, "You keep shooting here, I will be back after a few stitches." After an examination, the doctor thought about the over an inch long wound and the likelihood of infection on the set and required stitches. As soon as Fat Gor heard stitches, he asked, "I still have to go back to the set to keep shooting, for continuity can we not cut the hair?" Under the attentive care of the doctor and nurses, only a small area of hair was cut near the wound. * (2019/03/08) Mainland star Zhang Jingchu with the film PROJECT GUTENBERG (MO SEUNG) received the Hong Kong Film Award Best Actress nomination. Yesterday she appeared on the radio and joked that she did not come in preparation for accepting the Best Actress award. Did she think Fat Gor or Aaron Kwok Fu Sing would win Best Actor? She said, "I hope for double Best Actor but it seems it has never happened before." She said that she would stay in Hong Kong for a few days for media interviews and the Asian Film Awards. * (2019/03/08) The 25th Hong Kong Film Critic Society Awards took place yesterday at the Hong Kong Film Archives. This year Andy Lau Tak Wa presented five major awards including Best Film THREE HUSBANDS (SAM FU), Best Director Fruit Chan Gor (THREE HUSBANDS), Best Actor Anthony Wong Chau Sun (STILL HUMAN), Best Actress Chloe Maayan (THREE HUSBANDS) and Best Screenplay Oliver Chan Siu Kuen (STILL HUAMN). In addition president Cheuk Nam presented the Society recommended films including STILL HUMAN (LUN LOK YUN), THE G AFFAIRS (G SAT), I'VE GOT THE BLUE (SHUI DAI HUNG JAU DIK YUN) and PROJECT GUTENBERG (MO SEUNG). When Lau Tak Wa presented the awards on the stage, he said, "When I started Hong Kong Film Award was already around, but it didn't present an award to me. I felt that they didn't know how to watch a movie. 25 years ago the Hong Kong Film Critic Society appeared, I waited for ten years but I still felt that I was still very far from knowing how to act." Wa Jai also asked everyone to ask him to make movies and not necessarily have to ask Chau Sun. He even said to the STILL HUMAN Best Screenplay winner Oliver Chan Siu Kuen, "Next time don't ask Chau Sun, come and ask me. He only took the role because he thought you are pretty!" He also said that he has been very supportive of new directors. He would not look at what awards they have won, but how the screenplays were and how they were as people. Wa Jai yesterday supported the event as a guest presenter. He praised Best Actor Chau Sun as a highly efficient actor, as soon as he made a movie he would win an award. Wa Jai said that in the past he has worked with Chau Sun on the play for a long time, only the company has not had a movie that would be suitable for him. However he would consider him for his movies. Was it due to Chau Sun's Mainland market ban? Wa Jai said, "He has the Hong Kong market, just take a little less!" Was he haggling with him? Wa Jai joked, "The Hong Kong price is the highest, I am not haggling with him!" Did he feel Chau Sun would win the Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor? Wa Jai said, "In the history of the Hong Kong Film Award, this year is the strongest. Aside from new nominee Hak Gor (Philip Keung Ho Man), the other Best Actors have won many awards!" Only he was missing in the Best Actor race. Wa Jai helplessly said, "I fell and no movie for release, next year I will be back!" He admitted that due to his injury he made less movie. This year he would have a little higher production rate. YIT HUET HUP CHEUNG TUEN (HOT BLOODED CHOIR) was made before his injury and he did not have time for its post production. He would also work with Kent Cheng Juk Si on HEUNG GONG JAI (ABERDEEN). In addition he would try on several new costumes for SHOCK WAVE 2 (CHAK DAN JUEN GA 2). He also had an early Republic assassin movie in preparation. Kenny Wong Tak Bun earlier busted Chow Yun Fat's head open while working on the film GIU YEUNG SHUI YUET (PROUD SUN AGE) earlier, Fat Gor remained calm and finished the scene before going to the hospital for stitches. While treating the wound on the set he even told everyone "if you are calm you would have money left" to ease the tension. Wa Jai said that he has not heard the news. When he found out that Fat Gor was hurt he asked, "Did he get hurt today? Actually a lot can't be predicted on a film production. When I worked with Fat Gor on television or film, no matter what happened he would put everyone on the set at ease. He remembered when they made THE LEGEND OF MASTER SO, in one scene he had to kick a coffin. He hurt his foot but kept going without saying a word. After working with him on television, I learned the professional attitude and atmosphere from him!" Chloe Maayan after accepting the Best Actress award from her idol Lau Tak Wa thanked director Fruit Chan Gor for her character in the film. She also thanked her mother for continuing support and she will keep working hard. Chloe Maayan said that Lau Tak Wa has been her top idol since childhood. His songs are very encouraging and she immediately recited two verses from Wa Jai's LOVE FORGETTING WATER. "In my youth I love chasing dreams, only had my heart of flying ahead." Chloe Maayan said that she was very happy to receive the award from Wa Jai. She has been very familiar with his songs because all of her classmates sang his song. Thus she was very nervous to see Wa Jai in the VIP room. She would like to stay in Hong Kong and keep making movies, but she did not dare to recommend herself to her idol. However she really wanted to be able to work with Wa Jai because he had both culture and art, the person she would respect the most. As for Wong Chau Sun, she said, "He is a genius. His acting is very realistic, relaxed. He is very amazing, like Al Pacino!" However Chau Sun praised her eyes for having drama, soul and being thoughtful while acting and picked her to win the Hong Kong Film Award. Chloe Maayan humbly gave the credit to the director's guidance and thanked Chau Sun for the praise. * (2019/03/07) Brigitte Lin (Lam Ching Ha) and Chin Han's film RED DUST (GWUN GWUN HUNG CHUN) from around 30 years ago after digital restoration would be released in Taiwan tomorrow. Winning the Golden Horse Best Actress award with the film, Lam Ching Wan appeared in Taiwan again 5 years later with the RED DUST restored version's Taiwan release. Lam Ching Ha recalled at her rehearsal with Cheung Man Yuk, Cheung Man Yuk w was able to shed tears as large as pearls. She could not admire her more. Two days ago Ching Han did not accept any media interview and avoided the subject of divorce. Lam Ching Han two nights ago with RED DUST theme song creator Lo Ta-yu, Best Actresses Chen Chen, Hsu Feng, famous presenter Fang Fangfang attended the event. Lam Ching Ha after marriage eased out of the film industry, the last time she appeared in public in Taiwan was in November 2014. Thus her attendance of the RED DUST premiere in Taipei became a focus. Away from the public spotlight for a long time, Lam Ching Ha did not change appearance wise. Two nights ago she was in great spirit. She even mischievously pointed at the media for photos and happily said that she was very happy to see everyone in Taiwan again with the RED DUST restored version. "I haven't been here in a very long time. I really missed Taiwan's cuisine, family, friends and life in Taiwan. I am very happy." RED DUST was famous writer Sanmao written and Yim Ho directed. The film was a love story in the 40s between the Lam Ching Ha played writer and the Chin Han played official. The film received 8 awards including Best Feature and Best Actress at the 27th Golden Horse Awards and 8 Hong Kong Film Award nominations. It was considered a Chinese film industry romance classic. RED DUST was a milestone in Lam Ching Ha's film career. She mentioned that after making 100 films she won her only Golden Horse Best Actress with this film; before 1990 most of her films were romance. After the 80s she mostly made Hong Kong action films. She said, "RED DUST was a watershed moment, a very important movie in my life." Speaking of her role, Lam Ching Ha said that in her 100 films that was the only writer she played. She was also very honored to be able to play the role because after that she really liked to read and write. She met many outstanding writer friends and so far she has always published 2 books. She joked, "So I didn't let this role go to waste." Speaking of Maggie Cheung Man Yuk's acting display in RED DUST, Lam Ching Ha had nothing but admiration. She recalled in one scene she and Cheung Yuk Man shared a sad embrace. The director at the time asked Cheung Man Yuk to shed a tear on cue. "She truly at that moment shed tears as big as pearls. I truly couldn't have admired her more, to be able to so precisely make tears roll down." Inviting writer Sanmao to write the RED DUST screenplay, Lam Ching Ha revealed that Sanmao wanted to play her close friend. At the time she was very into the character. Sanmao even said to the Lam Ching Ha, she wanted to stand behind the camera and watch her act in every shot. "Very certainly she was the soul of RED DUST. Without Sanmao there would be no RED DUST." Speaking of her interaction with Sanmao, Lam Ching Ha felt that she was able to interpret her role outstandingly because at first Sanmao invited her to read the screenplay in her office. "She didn't just read every word and every line to me, she even acted it out for me. So I had a very thorough understanding of this character." Thus she was able to be the character as soon as she was in front of the camera. Last year divorce rumors surfaced and Lam Ching Ha was rumored to have wed Chin Han. At the time Chin Han's manager denied the rumor. Lam Ching Ha two days ago did not speak to the media and avoided the sensitive topic. As for Chin Han's absence from the RED DUST premiere, the organizers said that at first they did not make any special invitation. Thus in the end they were not able to share the stage. After completing the restoration of FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE (BA WONG BIT GEI), Hsu Feng this time brought back RED DUST to the silver screen; speaking of the opportunity to produce the film, Hsu Feng said that one day Lam Ching Ha called her from Hong Kong. She said that she had a script that she wanted her to look over, because the average film company boss did not want to invest in it. She asked her if she would be willing to make film. Hsu Feng after reading the script was deeply affected, and immediately said to Lam Ching Ha that she wanted to make the movie. "I particularly like to make subjects that others haven't made." RED DUST brought together the classic silver screen couple of "One Chin One Lam". Hsu Feng felt that they were her only choices for these characters. "The script was written for them, they were the most suitable to play them." After watching the rough cut of the film, Hsu Feng even predicted that Lam Ching Han would win the Golden Horse Best Actress. In Hsu Feng's eyes, RED DUST collected Lam Ching Ha, Chun Han and Cheung Man Yuk's most beautiful era. Their acting was just as impressive. As for whether she would plan to make any new films in the future, Hsu Feng joked not to give her too much pressure and stressed that film was what she loved the most. "I will give it my all without any regret." Hsu Feng and Lam Ching Ha were both Best Actresses and would encourage the younger generation of actors. Lam Ching Han mentioned that she was less than 100 pounds back then. "How was I able to withstand the storms when I was so thin. I thought, I must truly love acting". She also stressed that if she ran into a good movie she would not be afraid of any hardship, because when you have a passion for acting she would give it your all. She believed that the audience would be able to see that. RED DUST's theme song was Lo Ta-Yu written. He said that the song was nominated for the Best Film Song Golden Horse Award. So far many younger generation singers still sang it. As for his creative process then, Lo Ta-Yu said that the lyrics consisted of "triple meter". It symbolized the ever changing, rolling romance under the great era in a beautiful and touching way. * (2019/03/07) "The Strongest in the Universe" Donnie Yen Chi Tan yesterday attended the 2019 BWM Hong Kong Derby at the Jockey Club. Chi Tan humbly said that he was not a "fit horse", nothing was guaranteed and each artist must have determination and confidence to stay in shape, to be able to breakthrough himself in order to "maintain" permanent glory. Later he will work on the Benny Chan Muk Sing directed modern action film, for which he will be able to stay in shape and keep his skills sharp. He hoped to return to his SPL (SAT POR LONG) and FLASHPOINT (DOH FOR SIN) shape, but he has not set any limit on his weight. "Whether fat or thin my weight fluctuate between 6 or 7 pounds, when I am in my most muscular I was 145 pounds and when I was at my fattest I was 153 pounds. The level of fitness doesn't depend on weight but on how firm, shapely, flexible and explosive the muscles are. At your fittest you can walk faster and have more energy. (Do you need to be on a diet?) Yes, only without a family and social circle can you achieve military training style diet, but I can't possibly make my family to do it with me. Thus I have to achieve balance. Sometimes when I know I have to go out and entertain, I would skip breakfast and lunch. Last night I went to the movies with my wife, she said that she wanted a cheese burger. I didn't have breakfast and lunch. In the end at night I had a double cheese burger. It's not very healthy, but it is very satisfying." * (2019/03/07) The 26 year old former Miss Hong Kong candidate Sabrina Yeung Ching two nights ago held a birthday party. Guests included Raymond Wong Pak Ming and Whitney Hui Chi Ying (formerly Hui Yik Nei). Yeung Ching said that she wished for good health for her birthday. She just opened a production company, thus she hoped for a smooth sailing for the company and her on screen development. She revealed that her family also opened a company and she would be able to take advantage of that. Through her industry connection she would be able to market, sell and field jobs. This investment was around 6 figures. Despite becoming the boss Yeung Ching would continue to perform on screen. She would even make a movie for herself if the opportunity would arise. She also thanked Brother Pak Ming for attending and bringing a gift. In the future she would need his help. The 2011 Miss Hong Kong second runner up Hui Chi Ying has not appeared in the public in a long time. she said that actually she had offers to perform from directors but she wanted to continue her study. However guest starring would not be a problem. Would she decline sexy roles? She said, "I have always been shy, when I was younger I wasn't too afraid. Now I am older I have to be more reserved. No one probably wants to see me like that anyway, since age 30 is already very far to 23 or 24!" * (2019/03/07) Jennifer Yu Heung Yi, Fish Liew Chi Yu, Super Girls, Bryant Mak Chi Lok, Jeffery Lai Hok Kan, Judy Kwong Kit Ying, Eunice Chan Sze Yan, Zoe Yu Kit Ying two nights ago attended their company Lunar New Year dinner and celebrated Liew Chi Yu's birthday at the end of March in advanced. Turning 29 at the end of the month, Liew Chi Yu admitted that she wanted to fulfill her birthday wish from last year. She said, "I want to direct, write my own story, I hope this year I will keep working toward this goal." Friend Yu Heung Yi supported her bid to become a director. "She can ask me to be her actor, she says she would. Whether I would be the lead or not I wouldn't mind." Liew Chi Yu said, "Then let I finish writing first. I am working until the middle of the year, I have to wait until then to have time to write." She revealed that this year was already the three year they celebrated her birthday together. With three Hong Kong Film Award nominations this year, Yu Heung Yi was happy but also felt the pressure. She said, "I am someone who would be very anxious and think a lot. Because I feel I am still very new, sometimes I would worry that I am not performing well enough. I would have a lot of pressure on my performance in the future." She also said that Liew Chi Yu looked very cool in a suit at the Hong Kong Film Award last year. This year she would like to try the same. mind [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. TA KUNG PAO, MARCH 7 2019, LIGHT SHADOW PATH NEW SCREENWRITERS URGE INDUSTRY TO IMPROVE ITS BAD HABITS Lately a group of new film workers began an operation in hopes of improving industry work conditions to rid the bad habits of "delaying salary payment, not giving credit and even skipping payment". Veteran colleagues all expressed support and shared their experience. Such bad habits often happen to screenwriters, thus new writers hope to be able to establish a minimum wage standard and reasonable order of work. Of course credit is the most important of important items. Veteran writers understand some demands would not be easily achieved, only with a writer's guild like in the U.S. would members have protection. Hong Kong film worker organizations would resolve problems for members but they have not reached union status. Usually they would resolve labor employer disputes with negotiations. If a writer complains about a film that has completed production, the Hong Kong Screen Writers' Association would negotiate on the writer's behalf and usually the employer (or producer, director) would accept the resolution. However when the writer who does not even have a contract files a complaint, then help would be difficult. Thus, participating in creative (work) without a contract is very dangerous. Yet this is the mistake that new writers often "make". Veteran writers' advice is to choose official and reputable companies or employers to work for, not to work for people with bad reputations, and to sign a contract before working. The most ideal employer has three distinctions. First it is willing to sign a contract with you, stating clearly the order of work and the weekly salary. Secondly the employer's representative (maybe executive producer, producer or director) has creative experience and evaluation abilities, which would make the job easier. Thirdly the employer's representative is ethical and would not deliberately make matters difficult. Of course, having all three would be the most ideal condition. Still writers should consider further before determining their next step. Without an union protection indeed is difficult, thus many famous writers actually have experienced exploitation and abuse. One said that at the start he participated in the creation of seven film scripts but was only paid for one. Another said that when participating in creating the director said that there would be no salary. He still gladly joined in because he wanted to get into the business. Such examples are not good. We should fight for a more protected work environment. Everyone agrees with the new writers' ideas. Would having an union resolve all problems? Not necessarily. The U.S. has non union writers, or union members who take jobs that pay less than the union scale. What do they do that for -- opportunity. Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong (CASH) seeks benefits and royalties for those in the business, but some workers have not joined the association. Because playing their work would not require paying CASH, some organizations (like restaurants) would gladly use them. The current environment is not ideal and industry bad habits must be struck against, but no one can begin creating after creating a good environment. The first step is to sign a contract before working. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] ELISA'S DAY Can : Wai Oi Lit : Leftover Love AKA : Chong Hoi Wai Oi AKA : Love Left At Sea d.
