MISCELLANEOUS * (2019/03/05) Louis Koo Tin Lok, Raymond Lam Fung, Julian Cheung Chi Lam, Kevin Cheng Ka Wing starred in the film P STORM (P FUNG BO), which will open next month. In the film Goo Jai played a high ranking ICAC investigator who was sent to prison in order to investigate a case. In prison he had to face the Lam Fung played ruthless property group heir, and Gordon Lam Ka Tung, who he arrested in the first STORM film. He would battle brains and brawn with both and have many action scenes. The production constructed prison scenes in many places in Hong Kong. For realism, Goo Jai met with the Correctional Services many times. Goo Jai said, "I am very grateful to the Correctional Services, during the production they had employees on hand to provide professional suggestions. Because prison has many different rules and lingo, what could be shot and could not, the relationship between correctional personnel and prisoners, everything to be understood in detail to be able to be shot!" Lam Fung has seen prison photos online, when he got to the set and saw the prison set his eyes were wide open. He got the impression that it was a realistic prison. * (2019/03/05) The film GUNG GUP GAU WOON (EMERGENCY RESCUE)'s director Dante Lam Chiu Yin worked with producer Leung Fung Ying again on another blockbuster after OPERATION RED SEA, with stars Eddie Peng Yu-Yan, Ian Wang, Xin Zhilei, Lan Yingying, Wang Yutian, Xu Yang, Li Mincheng to make the Mainland's first sea rescue film. The film involved a lot of visually shocking effects. GUNG GUP GAU WOON since its production began in Xiamen has kept high confidentiality in a completely closed production. This film the production cost over HK$ 800 million. the director invested heavily on 4 extremely shocking rescue scenes, each could be an international rescue blockbuster's ending on its own. Lead actor Peng Yu-Yan has worked with director Lam Chiu Yin 4 times. Eddie said that the director would always be able to see different sides of him. Through the director's hellish training, Eddie kept challenging his limits. He had an even more systemic grasp of rescue skills and even more in depth understanding of the rescue spirit; while working with the director, Eddie has been learning new skills and never be pleased with himself. Courage is the center of the film. Everyone in the rescue team faces hardship, accepts challenges during crises to gain courage and growth. Since the film started production, some of the rescue scenes have already been completed. Many complicated and difficult explosions, fire rescue scenes have already been done. Aside from the Mainland shoot, the film will also shoot in TITANIC's production location in Mexico for some deep sea rescue shoot. Director Lam Chiu Yin has been known for his realistic production, as he relied on actors' on location performance in numerous dangerous scenes to the benefit of the audience and the nightmare for the actors. In order to play rescue team members well, each actor experienced the director's long term hellish training in order to achieve the director's highest demands -- to become professional sea rescue team members on the silver screen. This film's production cost over HK$ 800 million, more than twice of OPERATION RED SEA. The director invested heavily on 4 extremely shocking rescue scenes. Each one could be the ending of an international rescue film, hence demonstrating the difficulty and the complexity of the film production. In order to make a good movie, the production gathered top Chinese and Hollywood production team as it invited Best Cinematography Oscar winner Peter Pau Tak Fun and TITANIC's art director Martin Laing to join the team. Pau Tak Fun talked about working with director Lam Chiu Yin. "The director is very daring, sometimes for some big scene productions, he would leave the decision of color and lighting to me while he focuses on actors' performance and the action scenes." Martin compared Director Lam Chiu Yin to top international directors Steven Spielberg, Michael Bay, James Cameron. His films have elevated Chinese films to even higher level. * (2019/03/05) Mo Chun Fai, Alice Lau Nga Lai, Louisa So Yuk Wa and Poon Chan Leung yesterday attended the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre 2019-2020 season announcement. Poon Chan Leung with the film MEN ON THE DRAGON (YIK LAU DAI SHOOK) was nominated for the Hong Kong Film Award Best Supporting Actor. Ah So revealed that her boyfriend has already invited to attend and walk the red carpet. Ah So said, "I said it's my honor, thank you for inviting me. I have already begun to choose what I will wear, hopefully I won't embarrass him. I hope he will be able to win an award. (Do you feel your boyfriend's chance of winning is high?) Awards are hard to say, a lot of factors exist but for a film newcomer I am very proud of him. He is very lucky to be able to make such a good movie and work with a group of good actors. Aside from being a box office hit, the film also has many Hong Kong Film Award nominations. I congratulated him on how well the film has performed. Actually the award is not important, the most important is for us to be able to participate in the Hong Kong Film Award together." Poon Chan Leung said that he would leave the award to fate. * (2019/03/05) If film is a beautiful dream, this dream definitely has an angle. Then film is probably this angel's wings, fanning all the indescribable love and hate to people around the world. Film is the most important beginning for movies. Today, technology has already brought the film industryi into an all new digital age as production and cinema screening equipment have all gone fully digital. The government also undrestands the film development problem, in this year's budget it allocated HK$ 20 million for the Film Achive to hire employees to assist with the film transfer to digital media, to add technicians and equipment. The goal is to restore 150 films digitally in the next 5 years to preserve Hong Kong film. Aside from film restoration, HK$ 1 billion will be allocated for the Hong Kong Film Development Fund's "First Feature Film Initiative". Both are good news for the shrinking Hong Kong film industry, but the current amount of support cannot resolve the current crisis. The latest budget's allocation of HK$ 1 billion for the Hong Kong Film Development Fund. Once the beneficiary of the "First Feature Film Initiative", the film MEN ON THE DRAGON (YIK LAU DAI SHOOK)'s director Sunny Chan Wing Sun said that for now he had no idea how the money would be used, thus it would be hard to determine whether it would be enough. He said, "If the pie is cut too small, each film would not get enough. If the quota is too small, each film would seem to get a lot and perhaps stiil more people would not benefit. However I definitely would support the financial assistance increase!" Among the fund allocations the First Feature Film project quota will be increased to six teams, the amount of the financial assistance will also be increased by half. Sunny Chan Wing Sun admitted that the "First Feature Film initiative" in the past was able to help the film industry anda group of new director so their work could have less commercial baggage and they would be able to try different genre subjects. For example, the film MEN ON THE DRAGON (YIK LAU DAI SHOOK) received HK$ 4,492,8000 in financial assistance from the Hong Kong Film Development Council's Film Development Fund film production financing plan. Last year when it was released in early August it also did not have too many screens, but the film received good word of mouth. By second or third week the box office rose instead, for four weeks in a row its box office kept growing and created a sizable box office miracle. In the end its cumulative box office made over HK$ 15 million. However, Chan Wing Sun felt that the government aside from monetary support for the film industry actually should provide more support during its production. "Film productions around the world would have road blocks for production, but Hong Kong still has not been able to do it. The application process still requires some clarification, but some elders have been in discussion with the government. Like the earlier 'countefeit currency incident' hopefully everyone would be able to have more mutual understanding and communication for Hong Kong film to have even better development!" The Carina Lau Ka Ling produced IN YOUR DREAMS (YI CHING CHUN DIK MING YI) received assistance from the Hong Kong film development council film development fund and CreateHK. New director Tam Wai Ching directed the film, and it was the second "First Feature Film initiative" winner. Ka Ling after learning about fund allocation to the film development fund said, "It's good news, it's a shot of confidence. Hong Kong has such great natural conditions and so many excellent professionals, in the past it kept leading Asia. It can't let others get ahead, it shouldn't give up. Actually the government should do more!" Film director and screen writer Alan Mak Siu Fai felt that the government's willing to provide assistance of course is a good thing. However he felt that the poor film climate currently is not due to resource. "Most new directors actually have no financial source. I feel financing for filmmaking is more than either 'enough' or 'not enough', it must be gauged and accommodate the budget. If a movie's budget is HK$ 30 million, then the problem is not that this plan is 'not enough' but something that the creators should consider; like how you would use the 8 to 9 million to display what you want to express and your talent." Mak Siu Fai felt that in the film creation process, the most important is for money to be able to be spent in appropriate places. This is not easy. "Often investors' funding is not completely used on making the movie, but as a creator you have to have the ability to master the budget." He felt that many new directors blamed the problem on resources, which was an excuse for their own lacking of ability. "Commercial films ultimately belong to the market. If this film's idea can't find fudning in the market, then indirectly this film may not belong to the market. The problem thus isn't with funding." The "Northern Migration" wave of Hong Kong film led to the loss of many excellent domestic film creators and a drastic drop in Hong Kong film production rate. Mak Siu Fai admitted that currently Hong Kong creations are not "cool headed" enough. Blindly chasing past production rate in the face of the film downturn is not viable. He felt that if the film quality could be considered, after such high quality film would return the production rate would naturally rise. * (2019/03/05) Past classic Hong Kong films to this city are culture landmarks. For the general public that was unable to be in Hong Kong during the age, they would be able to catch a glimpse of old Hong Kong's unique flavor through film. Films with longer history must be transferred from the ancient film version to digital format, then different post production additions to finally be appreciated and preserved for the world to study even more properly. 35 millimeter film once was the primary format for cinematic screening, it served the purpose for over 100 films. New policy could be rebirth for classic films. Preservation of film history and culture for the next generation to have a chance to know and appreciate Hong Kong film culture heritage undoubtedly is good news for Hong Kong film lovers. Director Clifton Ko Chi Sum felt excited after hearing about the budget allocation and said that this was a job that was well worth doing. "However, HK$ 20 million probably is a low number. If each film needs almost HK$ 200,000 for restoration, then 20 million will be able to restore about 100 movies." However, many more than 100 Hong Kong films in history are worth savoring. "According to this calculation, the amount should be increased." He even felt that after restoration, the government should provide screening plans for the general public to complete the project. "If they are just stored in the archive, they would be meaningless." Restoration is important, but the post restoration jobs should not be neglected. "This plan needs some experienced distribution and professionals to promote, only then would Hong Kong film's value would not be buried." Director Tsui Siu Ming also felt that film restoration would be good, at least everyone would value these valuable assets. However allocating only HK$ 20 million in 5 years for restoration, how many movies would be saved? He knew that the Film Archives had such equipment, but as far as he knew restoring one would take a very long time. It could not restore all the films that the industry wanted to restore. Those films would need advanced technology outside to assist and not just the Film Archives. Otherwise only a few films would be restored in a year to little or no effect. High quantity and fast restorations are needed instead of taking their time. New director Sunny Chan Wing Sun said that this was absolutely good news because old films have been gradually restored around the world. Valuable Hong Kong films should have the same thing done as well. Hong Kong TVB producer Dave Fong Chun Chiu also felt that this was a great decision. "This movie is great because many Cantonese films or classic films represent Hong Kong film's most glorious era. A continuation like this means a continuation of that era." Director Alan Mak Siu Fai pointed out that the budget allocation for film transfer to digital media not only gave classic films the opportunity to be reborn, but also for the younger generation of film professionals to directly witness the Hong Kong film peak period films, to explore and study the reasons for the rise of that era. Carina Lau Ka Ling felt, "Actually a film museum has to be set up, everyone is also responsible to promote the Hong Kong film industry!" * (2019/03/04) In the Emperor Motion Picture SEI YUN MO HOR YI (CAUSE OF DEATH NOT SUSPICIOUS) Kathy Yuen (Tong Yi) and her INTEGRITY (LIM JING FUNG WON YIN MOK) co-star Carlos Chan Ka Lok worked on a bed scene for hours and she admitted that the shoot was exhausting. Was she afraid that their rumors would be worse? Kathy said no. "If so it wouldn't have to wait for after a decade! He has so many rumored girlfriends, I am just one of them." She praised how attentive Ka Lok was, as he gave her mouthwash before the love scene. "He is too experienced! However the shoot was very pleasant, I get to work with a handsome guy! After editing the bed scene is probably around two minutes. It started on the ground, then in the air then in bed, with touching and kissing. I was a little tired. (Isn't it more tiring for the guy?) Why would the guy be more tired? The girl is tired too. He is the one who got taken advantage of, haha." Although they were friends, their first intimate scene was awkward. Kathy felt that she was grown up and had to make new attempts. After the break up with Ken Hung Cheuk Lap was she able to go even further? She admitted, "I can give my all!" In SEI she again worked with Karena Lam Ka Yun and Anthony Wong Chau Sun. * (2019/03/04) Anthony Wong Chau Sun, Crisel Consunji and Sam Lee Chan Sam two nights ago attended the film STILL HUMAN (LUN LOK YUN)'s promotion. Chau Sun and Crisel both were nominated for the Hong Kong Film Awards; Crisel also received a New Performer nomination. She was happy and honored to be nominated and said that she never thought about winning. She also praised Chau Sun as very professional and constantly advising her. Chau Sun had a lot of confidence in Crisel. Although she had two nominations she did not need to win both. As long as she would win Best Actress she would be fine. He said, "At first when I learned that she was a new actor I was a little worried and didn't know whether she would be able to adjust. I didn't expect her to be very smart and we had a pleasant time working together. (Are you confident about your award?) It doesn't matter whether I win or not, whether I will attend or not it will depend on my schedule. I am very busy, I have a lot of international affairs to attend to. If I have time I will go. You know how flammable I am it, I don't want any needless trouble." In the film Chau Sun played a wheel chair bound person. He stated that at first he was not too used to it and needed time to learn to control the chair. During the shoot he also sensed the everyday inconvenience wheel chair users had and he hoped that everyone would be more concerned with the disabled. * (2019/03/04) "The Strongest in the Universe" Donnie Yen Chi Tan was named to the Po Leung Kuk Youth Services ambassador. Two nights ago he with his wife Cissy Wang and their children attended a Po Leung charity dinner and dance. The family was dressed in black and white. Yen Chi Tan at the end of the month would work on a new crime film. He has been working out in hopes of getting back into shape, but during the Lunar New Year he constantly had family dinners so he got a lot fatter. At the same time he was worried that he would have difficulty getting back into shape due to his age. Yen Chi Tan revealed that he will work on the Benny Chan Muk Sing directed crime film, which will start production at the end of the month. He has already tried to convince the director to shoot in Hong Kong so he would be able to spend more time with his family. This film would have stunt after stunt and fights like in SPL (SAT POR LONG). Thus Chi Tan was working hard to get back into shape. * (2019/03/04) Many Hong Kong Film Award nominees like Anthony Wong Chau Sun, Francis Ng Chun Yu, Kara Wai Ying Hung, Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin, Chloe Maayan and others two nights ago participated in the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers spring banquet. Speaking of the Best Actor race being between Chau Sun and Chun Yu, Chau Sun admitted that he would be just as happy no matter who would win. He only used his head to act while Chun Yu used his entire body, thus he believed that he would lose to Chun Yu. Best Actress nominee Choi Cheuk Yin said that Best Actress would be an actor's ultimate goal, it would be impossible for her not to long for it. Best Actress nominee Choi Cheuk Yin had no idea what she would wear. When suggested that she could design her own clothes, Ah Sa said that many people were very superficial; they would only look the label and the style. Thus she had to follow the trend. Luckily her boss Albert Yeung Sau Sing's wife would loan Ah Sa her jewelry for the event. As for how confident she was, Ah Sa said, "If I say none then I would be very fake, but if I say I am then I don't sound humble enough. I feel being nominated is already great." Ah Sa has already been nominated for Best Actress for the third time. She said that if she said that she did not long for the award she would be lying, because Best Actress was an actor's ultimate goal. However she did not make movies in order to win awards, playing the character well was the most basic. Chloe Maayan was confident about winning Best Actress and said that she was already very happy to be present with several excellent competitors. "I am very excited, very grateful. I am able to succeed in Hong Kong with my first lead actress role, thank you Director (Fruit) Chan Gor. I am very emotional." Was Choi Cheuk Yin her biggest opponent? She said, "I really like her song NEXT STOP DIVA, a Cantonese song that I can sing in its entirety." Was her goal to become a diva? Chloe Maayan said, "That's right, I really like the Tin Hau station. When I take the MTR and the announcement says 'next stop Tin Hau' the feeling is particularly good." Wong Chau Sun with a wheel chair bound role was nominated for Best Actor. Chun Yu said that he would lose to his "head", but Chau Sun said, "Only my head was acting so I definitely would lose. He used his entire body." Chun Yu said that he took a whiff of Chau Sun and already lost that he would lose the award. Chau Sun admitted that Chun Yu was too exaggerated. He could puff up his chest, but he would be just as happy no matter who would win. Chau Sun continued to prop up Chun Yu's MEN ON THE DRAGON (YIK LAU DAI SHOOK). Although he has not seen it yet, he had dragon boat experience. He knew that Chun Yu was amazing just from looking at Chun Yu's photos. Ng Chun Yu, Yu Heung Yi, Wu Ting Yan, Wu Tsz Tung and director Chan Wing Sun appeared as the MEN ON THE DRAGON team. Chun Yu was very confident in his colleagues' chances of winning, as for himself as long as everyone would be happy then he would be fine. As for his confidence, Chun Yu said that sometimes he had to take a step back to move ahead. "It's definitely Chau Sun's. I haven't seen his movie but just from his scent I already know he is amazing." Film new comer Wu Ting Yan was already very happy about the Hong Kong Film Award Best New Performer nomination and felt that it would be very different from television award shows. Yu Heung Yi said that her Hong Kong Film award Best Supporting Actress choice would either be Wai Ying Hung or Catherine Chau Ka Yi. Wai Ying Hung said that she has not decided on what to wear to the Hong Kong Film Awards, but revealed that black was her lucky color. When she wore black before she won. Wai Ying Hung promised that if she would win the Hong Kong Film Award Best Supporting Actress she would post her swimsuit photos. She said, "I will worry about that when I win. Earlier I took some swimsuit photos for stock. Now I rarely go to the sea." Wai Yng Hung said that she saw a shark when she was at sea and thus developed a fear. "Back then when I took the sampan to fish with my brother near U Science, I had my leg on the water. However my brother saw a shadow and immediately held me down. Actually a shark was circling our boat to prepare to eat us. The shark was bigger than our boat. Luckily we left immediately." Wai Ying Hung never imagined that Hong Kong would have sharks. After a fatal shark incident she did not dare to swim in Sai Kung again. She would only swim in swimming pools overseas. * (2019/03/04) Anthony Wong Chau Sun, Ben Yuen Fu Wa, director Sunny Chan Wing Sun and director Kearen Pang Sau Wai yesterday attended the "Elite Alumni Sharing Session: the next years of Hong Kong movies" forum at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Nominated with STILL HUMAN (LUN LOK YUN) for the Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor, Wong Chau Sun was asked whether he took the chance to campaign for votes when he attended several events recently. He stressed that he did not campaign for votes, just for the box office. "I made this film without any salary. If I can campaign for the box office then it would be good, I would have a bonus. That's what we used to say, I don't know whether it counts or not." Chau Sun said that STILL has not been officially released yet, but he learned that many viewers who have seen advanced screenings laughed and cried. He was very pleased since he did not misjudge this team. Would he work with the team again? He admitted, "Not for free, if I would get paid next time, it means that this time we made money." He also joked that 20 years ago he fought for Hong Kong film, but its future development would be none of his business as it would depend on the younger generation to try. Speaking of STILL's good reaction, did it mean that his career had another sunrise? He said, "It's not up to me, it depends of timing, location and people." Director Chan Wing Sun's MEN IN THE DRAGON (YIK LAU DAI SHOOK) was nominated for the Hong Kong Film Award Best Director, New Director and Best Screenplay. He admitted that he wanted to win the screenplay award the most. Because after years as a screen writer the recognition would be even more meaningful. Although he was confident, the award also would depend on fate. As Chau Sun said, the award was something that was fated and not pleaded for. The nomination was already like a victory for him. He admitted that he had plans for a sequel, but he would have to finish the script first. Pang Sau Wai last year with 29+1 won New Director. She told Chan Wing Sun to dress up for the red carpet and for a beautiful memory. She said that she was looking into whether to halt her play for the Hong Kong Film Award so everyone would be able to support the film industry event. * (2019/03/04) The Alan Luk Chun Kwong, Hanna Chan, Kyle Li Yam Sun and Lam Sen starred G AFFAIRS (G SAT) began with a headless murder case, in which the letter G connected six empty city souls. Playing a pretentious teacher in the film, Luk Chun Kwong developed a relationship with the Hanna Chan played student. They even had an "under the desk deal", a performance that was daring conceptually. Hanna Chan admitted that when she first read the script she felt very awkward. Hanna Chan played a high school student from a complicated family. Although she was well behaved and excelled at school she was not popular. With her Asperger syndrome classmate Li Yam Sun she even had a "passionate scene". Li Yam sun said that it was not the intimate scene, but the emotional one. Because his heart ached for Hanna Chan and sympathized with her, he had a scene in which he had to break down for a release. Lam Sen played a student who loved to play the cello. After being bullied at school no one helped him. He admitted that he was able to play the role on a certain level because he knew how to play the cello. His character had a crush on Hanna Chan but did not dare to come in touch with her. Was he like that in real life? He admitted, "Probably, I am not dating. (Did you fall for Hanna Chan due to the movie?) Yes, but now since we don't see each other as much I am not." * (2019/03/03) The Artist Training Alumni Association on March 7th will hold its 30th anniversary dinner at Kowloon Bay. Yesterday it held a press conference. Wayne Lai Yiu Cheung, president Ronald Yan Mau Keung, vice president Brian Wong Chak Fung, Tang Ying Man, Chuk Man Kwan, Yuen Tak Cheung and Tam Yuk Ying attended. Wong Chak Fung was very happy to bring together a group of classmates, so far the association has over 400 members and hopefully more. The only membership qualification was a TVB training class students. Later a play will take place for more unity. Cheung Jai said that the Artist Training Alumni Association was more low key before. The high profile promotion this time was to remind everyone that it was still in operation. Wong Chak Fung also revealed that the evening would have musical performances and auctions. He would be responsible on drums. Permanent honorary president and founding member Chow Yun Fat might attend. He said, "Fat Gor handed the association to us, he wouldn't just leave us." Cheung Jai said that he might have to work in the Mainland but would try to attend. He said that the it was rare for have an organization of people who all came from TVB training class. "Artists all want to contribute to society, but they worry that outside organizations would swindle them. However working with the Artist Training Alumni Association is different. All of the proceeds would be donated. Everyone is a volunteer, without any administrative cost." Soon to be a father Wong Chak Fung said that his 52 year old 19 week pregnant wife is very healthy and very strong. Cheung Jai said that she is everyone's role model. Would he like to have another? He said, "I can't! My son is 21, I am waiting for a grandson!" Wong Chak Fung was envious that Cheung Jai would be free from trouble. Cheung Jai said to him, "Take your time." * (2019/03/02) Ronald Cheng Chung Kei, Hanna Chan, Tony Wu Tsz Tung and others yesterday attended the production start worship ceremony for a based on a true story film ELISA'S DAY (WAI OI). Playing a cop in the film, Cheng Chung Kei said that the story was rather heavy. "This is my first real story, I am excited but the event was rather tragic. Earlier I read the paper to get an understanding of this case. (Are you worried that you wouldn't be able to leave the character?) I wouldn't bring the emotions home, in addition I mostly work until the afternoon the next day. All the children are in school. When I awake up I am fine." Cheng Chung Kei said that two nights ago he just finished a Hanna Chan slap scene. "I told her not to hold back, it would be worse if she did and we had to shoot a few more times. I didn't expect that even without holding back she still had to hit a few more times." Did he want to win an award from making a film with a subject like this? Cheng Chung Kei hoped that the director would win because the script was very well written. In order to support new directors he did not deliberately talk about salary. As for the government allocation of HK$ 1 billion for the Hong Kong Film Development Fund in its latest budget, he felt it would be a good thing. * (2019/03/02) The film INTEGRITY (LIM JING FUNG WON YIN MOK) made over HK$ 31 million at the Hong Kong box office. Two nights ago a celebration was held. Boss Albert Yeung Sau Sing and his wife, director Alan Mak Siu Fai, actors Sean Lau Ching Wan, Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Karena Lam Ka Yun, Alex Fong Chung Shun, Kathy Yuen (Tong Yi), Mani Fok Man Hei attended. Emperor Motion Pictures even brought over HK$ 100,000 for a lucky drawing. Director Mak wanted to make a sequel. Ching Wan said that he could work with Ka Yun again and even with his wife Amy Kwok Oi Ming. Ka Yun felt that she could play Ching Wan's sister or superior, but as a mother she refused to make a mother. She hoped to be a little fresher. Mak Siu Fai and Lau Ching Wan was rather pleased with the good box office. Ching Wan even said, "As long as the director and the boss are pleased, I am!" Did the director already reserve room on Ching Wan's schedule for the sequel? Ching Wan said, "No need for reservation, I am not doing much right now!" Director Mak admitted that he still has not decided whether the sequel would be a continuation or a new story, so he did not want to reserve actors' schedules. Ching Wan himself did not care, he would pair with Ka Yun again or anyone. Would he work with his mother Amy Kwok Oi Ming? Ching Wan said, "It would depend on the director's decision, it doesn't matter. Everyone knows I have always been easy going." Director Mak also said that he would have to finish the script before deciding on the casting choices. Speaking of the government in it latest financial budget allocating HK$ 1 billion for the Hong Kong Film Development Fund. Director Mak responded, "This is a good thing, it definitely will help new directors. Because now it is a co-production era, domestic subjects would have a lot of difficulty with finding financing. Government assistant of course would be the best." Would Ching Wan reduce his salary to help new directors? He said, "This isn't a salary issue, it has to do with story choices and character types. If it's fun, salary isn't too big of a problem. I believe this would happen, it would depend on timing. Just because I say I would help it doesn't mean that I would definitely be able to help. We have to see if it's suitable for now!" Has he performed without salary? Ching Wan said, "I wasn't paid before, but it was 20 years ago." The Ching Wan starred film MY PET IS AN ELEPHANT (NGOR DIK CHUN MUK SI DAI JEUNG) was not released within the contract period, so the Sil-Metropole Organization filed a lawsuit. Ching Wan said that he knew about the case but it was a matter between companies, and it has already entered into legal proceedings. Did he regret that the film was unable to be released as scheduled? Ching Wan said, "Behind each movie is its own story. Whether the timing is right, the film company would have its own ideas." Cheung Ka Fai was said that he did not attend any audience appreciation event. How would Ka Yun punish his co-star? Ka Yun spoke on behalf of Ka Fai and said that Ka Fai said in advance that he would not be able to attend audience appreciation events. Ka Fai also admitted that during the contract signing he already said that he had another job at the time. Ching Wan said that at his first audience appreciation event he was very nervous. Ka Fai said, "Everyone has a first time, I feel I am still better off focusing on acting." Ka Yun said that Ka Fai might have said that he would not promote, but he was very tense when he talked about the movie. Ka Fai said that since this was the combo meal he had to follow through. As for the director's intention for a sequel, Ka Yun felt that she could play Ching Wan's sister or superior but refuse to play a mother. "Normally I am already a Mama, I hope to be a little fresher. In addition actors don't get typecast as easily!" Ka Fai joked, "No, many actors after sex movies have had a hard time with shaking them off!" He said that he did not want to force anything for the sequel. Unless it would be a new story, he could wait to work together again next time. Ka Fai said, "My salary is more troublesome, as an actor I have to understand the creator and properly communicate what the creator's words cannot provide. I try to service everyone!" Ka Yun just came back from interviewing an artist in France. Her week long stay was like going back to school for her. At each interview she would hear stories about art and inspire her to find her inspiration. Ka Fai asked everyone if he looked like a drug smuggler from the Golden Triangle. He went to Myanmar for a ten day shoot, and everyday he and the sun were in an "embrace" and he was nice and tan. Yuen Fu Wa was nervous about working with a group of good actors in the film. In particular his character did not have a lot of lines and he had to rely on expressions for his performance, which was even more difficult. In addition he has been busy with movies, while working with "Shrimp Head" he had to constantly hold back his laughter. * (2019/03/02) Carlos Chan Ka Lok yesterday attended a Tseung Kwan O shopping event, spoke in the Taishan dialect with a group of seniors, was asked for autographs and had no generational gap at all. Ka Lok felt extra intimate with the seniors. Because he grew up with his grandma, he had no difficulty being with them at all. He felt the most comfortable and the most natural with them. Ka Lok earlier had to work on his new film GUNG GUP GAU WOON (EMERGENCY RESCUE) in Xiamen, thus since his film INTEGRITY (LIM JING FUNG WON YIN MOK)'s Hong Kong release he has not participate in any promotional event. He helplessly said, "I hope the director would remember me when the chance for a sequel arises. (You spend all your time on making money, have you made ten years' money in a year?) The base numbers were very low before, maybe ten years together I would only have made several tens of thousands. Thus people say I made ten years' worth of money." In GUNG due to a lot of rescue operations at sea, Ka Lok went to improve his swimming. However in the end he had no swimming scene, all the rescues were done on vessels and he fought fire. He said, "In the future it probably will be useful." Speaking of both him and old flame Jennifer Yu Heung Yi being this year's Hong Kong Film Award hosts, Ka Lok said, "I only know that I will be a part of it, but I haven't receive any arrangement yet. I know she will take part as well. We probably will have a chance to see each other. After (the break up) we haven't met, meeting again won't be awkward either because at work or at the Guild we would have a chance to see each other." Was he happy for Jennifer's three nominations? He said, "I would be happy for each actor who is nominated, basically I have sent text messages to congratulate all the nominated friends I know, including Jennifer." Would he celebrate with Jennifer? Ka Lok said, "For now I haven't considered that, the event would have an after party anyway. I will worry about it then. Instead I haven't been nominated since I started!" * (2019/03/01) Carina Lau Ka Ling yesterday attended a jewelry event. She admitted that she would reward herself with jewelry, especially she grew older and her finances permitted her to. She would cheer herself up with jewelry. Earlier on vacation with her husband Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Ka Ling returned to work in Hong Kong first. She revealed that Wai Jai was still on his long vacation. As Wai Jai's manager Ka Ling joked, "He's outrageous, if we rely on him we would be in trouble!" Speaking Ka Ling turning her Shanghai mansion into the film IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE (FA YEUNG NIN WA)'s style? She said that her Shanghai home would be for Mommy. Her place for entertaining in Hong Kong was the one was the IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE decoration. She also revealed that she only had properties in Shanghai and Hong Kong. "Don't make me sound like a landlady. I purchased properties in Hong Kong, I have been buying since I learned to make money!" Would she like to invest overseas? Ka Ling said that she would like to, but no wealth came from no effort. She would have to maintain them but would be reluctant to rent them out. If she would not live in them she would feel they would be wasted. She was better off with jewelry that she could wear at anytime. Ka Ling and Wai Jai spent the New Year together in Japan on a ski trip, then she went to Australia while Wai Jai kept playing. She said that now Wai Jai has many hobbies like water skiing, BMX and biking. He also did not wear masks but many started to recognize him. Did Wai Jai want to become an amateur athlete? She said, "Healthy hobbies are good!" Reporters joked that she would permit her artist to be on such a long vacation. Ka Ling said, "That's right, he's outrageous. If we rely on him we would be in trouble, but as long as he's happy it's fine. He is looking for a breakthrough point!" Ka Ling admitted that Wai Jai has many offers, has she chosen any for him? Ka Ling said, "I am not qualified, I pass them to him. Actually now he wants to rest and find a new direction. For such a good actor with a score in the 90s, a breakthrough for him would be very hard. He wants to find a new peak!" The Secretary of Finance Paul Chan Mo Po in the financial budget announced that the Film Development Fund would receive HK$ 1 billion in hopes that the industry would use the new added fund to expand the scale and the financial assistance of the First Feature Film initiative and by half and raise the upper limit of the film production financing plan's production budget to support the domestic mid scale budget film production. The Lau Ka Ling produced and starred film IN YOUR DREAMS (YI CHING CHUN DIK MING YI) was the 2nd First Feature Film Initiative winner. Ka Ling after learning about the budget's support for film industry development happily said, "That's great, it's good news. It's a shot of confidence so Hong Kong film industry should never give up. Hong Kong has such great natural conditions and many excellent professionals. In the past it has led Asia. It must stay ahead of others so no one should give up. The government should have done this long ago!" The Hong Kong Film Archives also will receive HK$ 20 million to add technicians and equipment, to preserve necessary sole film copies and digitalize films, and to give the next generation the chance to know and appreciate valuable Hong Kong film cultural artifacts. Ka Ling also showed her support. "Actually a film museum needs to exist, everyone also has the duty to promote the film industry!" * (2019/03/01) Kara Wai Ying Hung and Moses Chan Ho last night attended a jewelry event. Sister Siu Hung said that she already bought her dress for the Asian Film Awards. Would it be very sexy? Sister Siu Hung said, "How sexy can I be? Even if I stick them out no one would look at them. I wouldn't fight with young girls. Young girls should show more. We don't need to. (Let them fight over being sexy and leave the award for you?) No, I would be a little more elegant to match my age. I have been sexy when I was younger, so let someone else try it." Speaking of many pretty devilish uploading swimwear photos, Sister Siu Hung revealed that she too had many swimsuit photos. Last year while on vacation she took photos in a bikini. "If I win another award I would distribute benefits, then I would give the gift of bikini. I can still do it. My brother lately has been studying photography, he even bought a peach bikini with very little cloth for me." The well maintained Sister Siu Hung said that while not at work she would swim because she did not want to injury her knees. Earlier when she went for additional shoots in Beijing she injured her kneecap while kneeling down. She had to go to the doctor many times and it still hurts now. Speaking of the Secretary of Finance Paul Chan Mo Po's financial budget announcement of allocating HK$ 1 billion to the Film Development Fund and raising the upper limit of the film production financing project, Sister Siu Hung happily said, "That's good, in the first ten years of my career Hong Kong film was at its most vibrant. In one year Hong Kong made over 400 films. Now although many are co-productions, overalls Hong Kong makes less than 20 domestically. Hong Kong is the Eastern Hollywood. Actually feel the government should put a little effort into making the industry glorious again. Ultimately Hong Kong isn't a big place. If the government is willing to financially assist the entertainment industry, the return would be much bigger." The Hong Kong Film Archives also will receive HK$ 20 million to add technicians and equipment, to preserve necessary sole film copies and digitalize films, and to give the next generation the chance to know and appreciate valuable Hong Kong film cultural artifacts. She felt that the effort would be worthy. "Shaw sold 50 of my movies to Celestial, they have already been restored. Only then was I able to collect my own work back. I really want to buy classic films, if the allocation is true then they can be restored. Otherwise the film would easily be broken and scratched. HK$ 20 million isn't a big number for preserving the age of glory. It is worth doing." * (2019/02/28) Guests Yuen Biao, Daniel Chan Hiu Tung, Nancy Sit Ka Yin, Jessica Hester Hsuan (Suen Huen), Cally Kwong Mei Wan, Qi Qi, Jade Kwan Sum Yin and others attended the Memorigin anniversary dinner. Suen Huen revealed that this year has been a happy year, so far work has been scheduled until August. She will participate in the film BACK TO THE PAST (CHUM CHUN GEI) and have to go to Guizhou for a costume shoot, but she said that her shoot would have to finish before June. Thus it probably would not be too tough. She also said that the film would have some connections to the television series but she was unsure how the relationships would develop. "(Raymond) Lam Fung and I have read the script. I am excited and look forward to performing very well!" * (2019/02/28) Ben Yuen Fu Wa yesterday appeared on a radio interview. TRACEY (CHUI SZE)'s Golden Horse Best Supporting Actor recently was nominated for a Hong Kong Film Award. He said that he felt normal about winning an award but still would prepare a thank you speech. Would he thank his girlfriend again on the stage? He said that he would worry about it then, but he has asked her whether she would attend with him. She said no so he would walk the red carpet with the team. Yuen Fu Wa will perform a play in May. Currently he is working on three movies, which fortunately have not had any scheduling conflict. He received more film roles after the award, did he get a raise? He admitted that he got a few percentage more. He also was respected so he has not run into any haggling. He mentioned that in his 20 years he performed a children with disabilities. At the time he saw how the children had to endure pain even in basic life and understood how fortunate he was to have a healthy body, thus so far he has not complained yet. Looking back, the children were like angels who gave him this important gift. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. TA KUNG PAO, FEBRUARY 21 2019, LIGHT SHADOW PATH FILM'S "WAGERING FORMAT" The Spring Festival holiday has already passed, the Mainland Lunar New Year champion, firs and second runner up were THE WANDERING EARTH, CRAZY ALIEN and PEGASUS. The big winner was THE WANDERING EARTH, who was the big loser? Nothing was certain yet because now film investment and distribution both drew in financial skills, more clearly they should be described as "wagering format". Thus the box office alone might not determine who was the loser. The "wagering format" actually is nothing fresh, it is the so-called "minimum guarantee split" in distribution. Many distribution companies would want to get their hands on a generally favorable film. Thus they would estimate a box office number and split the take with the production, hence the so-called "minimum guarantee". If after release the film could not achieve the expected box office, the distributors would suffer the loss; if it exceeded it, the production would get more shares. The key to success would be on the distributor's insight. This format goes to the higher bidder, thus favorable movies often have already covered their losses before their releases. CRAZY ALIEN's distribution was rumored to belong to this type. The "wagering format" even developed to film company and filmmaker investments, for example a certain major director's workshop was sold for 500 million RMB to a film company. The condition was that the workshop would make more than 100 million in profit every year within five years. An even simpler type is when a fund company provides a filmmaker with a sum, for easy calculation let's say 100 million. The filmmaker every year would have to pay 10 million in interest. On the surface the interest looked high; but if those in charge had confidence in investing in one to two film productions in the year and the movies would make movie, this type of "wager" would not be too risky. Investment's "wager" and distribution's "minimum guarantee" "wager" if theoretically could be "ideally" merged together, filmmakers would have the opportunity to be in the land of invincibility. If filmmakers and investors "wager" a sum on making their movies; and they have distribution's "minimum guarantee", the "minimum guarantee" already covered the loss alone. Then the filmmaker would end up with a win. The most important is not making a mistake at every step of the process. The movie would have to start and finish production, and be released on schedule with ample "minimum guarantee", thus the chance of such a situation appearance would not be high. "Wagering" is a game of insight. Whether a production can succeed in the market also relies on insight. Thus, the current film investment process has become very transparent. First investors hand over project content, like story, director and actors. If the market response is enthusiastic, their project can easily succeed; on the other hand, this film just has one investor. In general companies would not take any risk alone. Most projects would die in the process. Distribution is the same way, favorable movies do not have to worry about lacking distribution. If a movie lacked "investment", "minimum guarantee" or other aspects, finding a distributor would be very hard and the film would have no release date. Last month a movie that has been made for well over two years was released, its box office was very poor and could be said as a total loss. "Wagering" risks are different with everyone and every movie. The most dangerous is running into "surprise", but film history has had many "surprises". - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] ELISA'S DAY Can : Wai Oi Lit : Leftover Love AKA : Chong Hoi Wai Oi AKA : Love Left At Sea d.
