MISCELLANEOUS * (2019/02/20) The Lai Sun Group, Hong Kong Ocean Park and the Marriott International Group organized Hong Kong Ocean Park Marriott Hotel yesterday officially opened and an opening party took place at night. Richie Jen (Yam Yin Chai) was one of the guests. Speaking of rumors that he would invest in starting production on the film PAO MA (HORSE RACING) again, he admitted that he would not only lose his salary but also would have to invest. Siu Chai said that he made movies to fulfill his dreams. The salary was a good script. Even if he had to, he still would do his best. Siu Chai earlier worked on Taiwan director Doze Niu's film PAO MA. Due to Director Niu's sex scandal the film has halted production. Later Siu Chai was rumored to be investing in starting up production again. Siu Chai admitted, "I am preparing to grow my facial hair, and see if I have to gain weight, but I am not confident that I would be able to reach 100 kilograms (220 pounds) like before. Now I am at 82 kilograms, at my thinnest I went to 70 something kilograms. However I still don't have any easy days." As for when the film would start production, he said that he did not know yet. After the Lunar New Year the team would meet and see. Siu Chai joked that he would have to buy a fake belly to play fat and admitted that lately he has not been trying to lose weight. During the Lunar New Year he kept eating to the point of having acid reflux. Speaking of losing his salary and paying for the investment, Siu Chai pouted and asked, "Why my movies don't make money? Ah To (Johnnie To Kei Fung) always says that . I make movies to fulfill my dream, Mr. To says that if I want to make money I should sing, my own salary is a good script. (Will you finance the movie yourself?) Now I am talking with the investors. Because there is a major scene yet to shot, we have to calculate how much the production budget will be. I will try to see if I can help out, if we don't then that would be for the best." He also revealed that the film so far is almost half made and could not take other jobs in between. Everyone thought that he retired. Actually in recent years he has been hiding during his film productions. TRIVISA (SHU DAI CHIU FUNG) due to inspection problems was unable to be released. He liked to do what he liked so he very rarely worked on the money making reality shows. Has his wife complained? He said, "The company would cry poverty." * (2019/02/20) Baseball player turned actor Tony Wu Tsz Tung in 2019 decided to try his hand in the food industry, as he teamed up with his brother and the late make up master Chan Man Fai's grandson Gary Chan to open a teppanyaki shop during the New Spring period. His family, girlfriend Stephanie Au Hoi Shun, friends in the business like Ng Siu Hin, Hedwig Tam Sin Yin, Will Or Wai Lam, and Sam Chan Yu Sam all showed their support. How did Tsz Tung invest in a restaurant? He said, "Actually like many Post 90s I don't know how to manage my finances, but I have thought about the necessity of buying a home and a car, paying family expenses, and saving up for marriage; this time I have fellow investors, the make up artist I met from making the movie WARRIORS OF FUTURE (MING YUT JIN GEI) last year. He talked to me a lot about investing and the future. When he planned to open this shop he really included me......I thought, since when I have money I would spend it, I might as well treat this as an investment opportunity." * (2019/02/20) The Lunar New Year film INTEGRITY (LIM JING FUNG WON YIN MOK) during the Spring Festival holiday remained on top of the Chinese film box office. By the Lunar 15th Lantern Festival, the Hong Kong and Macau box office has broken the 30 million mark. Director Alan Mak Siu Fai could not be more excited. "Of course I am very happy, thank you everyone for your support! A celebration must be held, the credit belongs to everyone on the team!" Sean Lau Ching Wan said, "With an ideal box office performance, as an actor I am certainly very happy. However after the Lunar New Year I have already begun work immediately, I haven't thought of any celebration for the Lantern Festival." Speaking of Director Mak's celebration promise, Ching Wan of course strongly supported it. "I really want to have dinner with the entire team, I will try to make time to attend." Nick Cheung Ka Fai and Karena Lam Ka Yun were both working overseas, Ka Fai happily responded, "Thank you to the audience for your support. Right now I am working on a movie in Myanmar, even on the Lantern Festival I still have to work. Everyday has been a lot of action scenes, so I have to preserve my strength and energy. The best plan is to stay in the hotel to rest up in preparation." Currently in France, Ka Yun was seeking benefits for Ching Wan and Ka Fai. "The feeling of breaking 30 million... shouldn't we actors get some bonuses? I am just joking! I hope the sequel will start production soon!" This year's Lunar New Year films each had their own viewers. According to information from February 5th (Lunar New Year's Day) to 17th (Lunar 13th), on top of the box office was ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL with HK$ 34,209,924 (13 days in release). In second place was INTEGRITY with HK$ 28,078,348 (13 days in release, already broke 30 million yesterday), in third was NEW KING OF COMEDY (SUN HEI KET JI WONG) with HK$ 20,854,025 (13 days in release). MISSBEHAVIOR (GUNG HEI BAK POR) and A LIFETIME TREASURE (YU JU YU BO) after 17 days in release also made more than HK$ 10 million. I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE! (NEI MAI LEI, NGOR OI NEI!) after 18 days in release made HK$ 8,714,747. * (2019/02/19) One of the Chi Wan Shan thirteen who successfully quit drug use to become one of the "Film Industry's Four Great Mean Men", the 69 year old Lee Siu Kay wed his girlfriend of 30 years Yau Hau Ching. Reportedly Lee Siu Kay registered the marriage on the 12th and wed his 58 year old companion Yau Hau Ching for good luck. They were both divorced and reportedly the Kowloon City location as their address. Brother Kay's brother Chan Chun Chi served as their witness. Friend Ng Chi Hung learned of Brother Kay's wedding news and was happy for him. Brother Kay years ago suffered two strokes, due to a lack of mobility he gradually eased out of show business. In November last year he had liver cancer. He once considered quitting treatment, luckily with family and friends' encourage in the end he had surgery and successfully removed the liver tumor. The unemployed Brother Kay was rumored to be in financial trouble, and many in the business expressed their concerns. They included his co-star Louis Koo Tin Lok. Last year Brother Kay revealed that he applied for public housing and would move in soon. Now he and his wife would have a love nest. Ng Chi Hung said, "I am very happy, congratulations to him. Marriage is a joyous major event in life. With someone taking care of Brother Kay, everyone would be at ease. I am in my 60s and I hope that my wife and children would be with me for the rest of my life, so I am very happy that he has a companion. (Has you met Brother Kay's wife?) Many times, I know that he has had a female companion for a long time but that shouldn't come from my mouth. (Would Brother Kay hold a wedding banquet?) I don't know, I would have to talk with his brother. A banquet of course would be joyous, as brothers and friends would gather to celebrate with him. Regardless, I will send a gift to congratulate Brother Kay on his marriage." * (2019/02/19) The "Fire Breathing Lady", Shaw star Diana Cheung Chung Wen passed away in the U.S. at age 82. Her husband Stanley Scott revealed that his wife on the 15th passed away due to organ failure in Texas. Cheung Chung Wen was born in 1936 with her family originating from the Hebei province. In 54 she joined the Taiwan China Film actor training class. Upon graduation she signed with the company as the first group of basic actors. In 58 she caught the eye of Asia Film Industry, and starred in SISTERS THREE as she danced and sang ROAST PORT BUN. In 59 Cheung Chung Wen made a memorable impression with her SHE SETS MY HEART ON FIRE's erotic image and was known as the "most beautiful animal". In 63 she officially joined Shaw. In 64 Cheung Chung Wen starred in the film THE AMOROUS LOTUS PAN and after completing THE MONKEY GOES WEST she retired and got married. Cheung Chung Wen had two marriages. She was wed to a German Seifert, and after marriage they had 3 children. At the time she retired from show business for her husband. Unfortunately in 93 Seifert passed away. The passing of her husband left quite an impact on her. She once lived in Hong Kong and Singapore for awhile and settled in the U.S. late in life, as she wed Stanley Scott. Her song ROAST PORK BUN was known far and wide, even Paula Tsui Siu Fung has made it. * (2019/02/18) Emperor Motion Picture INTEGRITY (LIM JING FUNG WON YIN MOK) as of last night at 10PM reached HK$ 27.98 million at the box office. The film's share of explosions, shootings, car chases left the audience breathless, but many questions about the key witness Nick Cheung Ka Fai still lingered. From the start when Ka Fai escaped from the hotel and flew to Australia, he already put all the criminal evidence that he knew on an USB and gave it to ICAC's Sean Lau Ching Wan. Only when Ching Wan arranged for Ka Fai to be the informant, ICAC had no idea! Ching Wan even kept breaking laws on his investigation. Would Ka Fai's undercover identity be recognized? Director Alan Mak Siu Fai stated that Ka Fai's undercover identity absolutely would not be valid. He said, "Official undercover would have related documents for record and would be accepted legally!" During the trial Ching Wan privately came in contact with two important witnesses, which Mak Siu Fai said that he absolutely could not in real life. "If he runs into them then there is nothing he can do, the law and the investigation has a line. One scene in the film is very memorable for me. Fong Chung Shun in the film tells Ching Wan, he risks everything to investigate the case. That is already greed." As for another ICAC employee Anthony Ho Yuen Tung while looking for important figures watched closed circuit television replay without batting an eye. He appeared to be somewhat neurotic. Was it a character design or a disorder? Mak Siu Fai said, "There are people like this in the world, some people don't get it. Actually back then the university accepted two students, one was Ching Wan and the other was Ho Yuen Tung. Later they both worked at ICAC. Ho Yuen Tung believed in data, very smart, had great memory, so he would use his data on everything. I believe such a person exist so putting him into the character would be very interesting!" Ho Yuen Tung talked about his character's neurosis and resistance toward Ching Wan. "I feel that he has no reason to be so afraid of Ching Wan either. When I read the script I joked with Director Mak, saying that I probably had a crush of his wife Lam Ka Yun so I would act like that. However in the end we didn't go too in depth into studying everyone's relationship! Speaking of neurosis, at first I worried that people would say I was stealing the spotlight or being too exaggerated. However I think under such a high stress environment like ICAC, someone with such neurosis would appear." * (2019/02/18) Aaron Kwok Fu Sing yesterday attended an equestrian event. Nominated for the Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor with PROJECT GUTENBERG (MO SEUNG), Sing Sing again thanked his wife for her support because at the time their daughter was not born yet. His wife's support enabled him to focus on work and not worry about his wife's first pregnancy. Sing Sing said, "PROJECT GUTENBERG had great box office and word of mouth. I have won film awards before, each award has different judging standards. The most important is for the actor to have contributed hard work. I am already very happy with the nomination, it is a honor for me from the voters." Was he confident about beating Chow Yun Fat? Sing Sing said as an actor he definitely had to have confidence, but it would not be excessive as he would treat the matter normally. * (2019/02/18) The Stephen Chow Sing Chi directed Lunar New Year film NEW KING OF COMEDY (SUN HEI KET JI WONG)'s leads Vin E Jingwen and Michael Jack (Lai Yuheng/Zhang Quandan) yesterday attended an audience appreciation event in Kwun Tong. Zhang Quandan performed his girl wooing tricks again and performed NEEDING YOU EVERY MINUTE. He received applause from E Jingwen and the audience. They both said that they were very happy to reunite during the Lunar New Year and promote together. Earlier was E Jingwen's birthday. Zhang Quandan said that he was unable to be by her side that day but he did send a text message to wish her Happy Birthday. E Jingwen revealed that Sing Yeh gave a big red pocket to her. Zhang Quandan also said that Sing Yeh gave away New Year laisee. Was it big? He blurred out, "Not big, how much is called big?" Then he said it was super big laisee. Speaking of working with Sing Yeh, did they feel he was hard to get along with? Zhang Quandan joked that he had to collaborate his testimony with E Jingwen to avoid any talk from any mishap. "Sing Yeh is a great person, working with him is certainly stressful. It's my first movie, I am new. He knows so much more than me, of course I would get yelled at. If I don't meet his demands after second or third try, he wouldn't smile as much. When he promotes he is another person, he would tell everyone to eat, hand out food, he is great." E Jingwen revealed that Sing Yeh yelled at her as well. "Sing Yeh is very strict on the set and doesn't say much, maybe because of the stress. I was just like Zhang Quandan, as Sing Yeh yelled at me. He wasn't very loud, he just frowned and still scared people. Yet after the shoot he would joke around." They were not afraid of Sing Yeh's temper, as they both hoped to work with him again in the future. Zhang Quandan said that his character has become so well known that he decided to use it as his stage name. * (2019/02/17) The Sean Lau Ching Wan, Karena Lam Ka Yun, Nick Cheung Ka Fai and Anita Yuen Wing Yi starred Emperor Motion Picture INTEGRITY (LIM JING FUNG WON YIN MOK) after 12 days in release already reached HK$ 26,716,191 at the box office. Ching Wan celebrated his birthday yesterday with the news. His wife Amy Kwok Oi Ming even invited friends like Dayo Wong Tze Wah to celebrate with him. Earlier when Ching Wan attended audience appreciation events, viewers all said Happy Birthday to him and greatly touched him! Co-stars Ka Yun, Yuen Wing Yi, Tong Yi and Hugo Ng Toi Yung all sent their well wishes to the birthday boy and wanted to work with him again soon. Ka Yun said, "I wish for sweetness for him and his wife. I look forward to keep working with him in the future. Since the film has performed so well, I really want a sequel soon. I don't have to play his wife, I can play his sister, classmate, co-workers, anything, as long as I am not playing his Mommy I am fine!" Yuen Wing Yi wished Ching Wan good health and everything going his way. Tong Yi joked, "I wish you keep being as dark, as cool, as dignified, and I want to say, I am no longer afraid of you!" Actually when she worked with Ching Wan, she was so scared she kept making bad takes! Ching Wan admitted that he already a dinner with many friends before his birthday. "Many friends I haven't seen in a long time sent five or six cakes to me. I felt very surprised! I don't like to celebrate, as I am more low key." Ka Yun said, "How sad." He said, "It's not sad! I am just low key and don't like to celebrate, but I like to celebrate for others! As for his birthday wish, he got sentimental. "I wish good health, smiles for everyone. When you run into anything unpleasant you would face it with optimism, because life doesn't always go your way, optimism is the most important!" Tong Yi only had one scene with Ching Wan but was already satisfied. She said that the film was full of Best Actors and Best Actresses so she would watch the monitor to learn. As for the sequel, she wanted a relationship with Ching Wan. "In the film Ching Wan and Ka Yun got back together, they could have a third party and I am more than willing! (Earlier you said that you should have a romance with Carlos Chan Ka Lok, aren't you afraid of rumors?) No, I have known him for years. Last year I worked with him on three movies and became even more familiar! However if we were to click we would have long ago! (Who would you choose between Ka Lok and Ching Wan?) I don't even have to think, definitely Ching Wan." * (2019/02/16) In the Emperor Motion Picture INTEGRITY (LIM JING FUNG WON YIN MOK), 9 year old child star Jemma Hung Wing Yi played Nick Cheung Ka Fai's daughter. The Chinese Australian native did not speak Cantonese fluently, but that did not stop her "debut" performance with Best Actor Cheung Ka Fai. Jemma's father Anthony said, "This time my daughter's performance in INTEGRITY was by chance, the director originally came to my home in Australia to scout for location. The home wasn't right, but he asked my daughter to performance. She had no acting experience and didn't know Ka Fai. Although Ka Fai didn't personally teach my daughter how to act, another sister was on the set to teach her. (She only needed one take to push Ka Fai into the water?) Just one take, it went very smoothly. So after the shoot my daughter thought it was a lot of fun. (Would she continue to perform?) She would like to, but she would have the chance to first. Of course school comes first!" Deep Ng Ho Hong did not have a lot of screen time but his role was important. In one scene Deep had to force Ka Fai's partners to jump out of a flight. He admitted that the scene was memorable because he not only had to act but also overcome his mental block. "I have a fear of heights, during the shoot I had to pretend I wasn't scared. However my legs were really shaking. It was my first time acting in a helicopter. The scene took eight hours and the director had a lot of patience." Deep said about his character in the film. "I just started in the film, I haven't done anything yet." This time he did not have any chance to work with Ka Fai and Sean Lau Ching Wan. He admitted that if he had to choose he hoped to work with Ka Fai in the sequel. "Earlier I have worked with Ka Fai on other films. I was very tense before, now I have more experience and should work out before when we work together again. However I have never worked with Ching Wan, I would have to adjust anew." * (2019/02/16) In the film THE LADY IMPROPER (FEI FUN SHOOK NUI) the divorced Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin ran into the chef Wu Kang-Jen and thus changed her life. Ah Sa named her junior colleague Angela Hui Ching Wan to sing the film theme song IMPROPER, the music video of which earlier began production. Because in the film Ah Sa had a bathing scene, the music video director hoped to edit Ah Sa's footage with Angela's bathing scenes as they would echo each other. Singing a film theme song and shooting a bathing scene for the first time, Angela during the recording was asked to sing with a waiting to bloom feeling; in the music video she had to give an aesthetic and sentimental feeling. For the bathing scene Angela prepared a lot of wardrobe malfunction prevention products. She said, "I have all kinds of tapes, haha, large, medium, small and all the sizes." Yet during the shoot she actually only had to put on a strap less sports bra, as the crew on the set made fun of Angela for being a master of anxiety. During the shower scene, Angela originally thought that the shoot would have continuous warm water, but the scene only required her to wash her hands after showering her head and body. The temperature was only 12 degrees Celsius that day, and Angela was shivering from the cold. The hairstylist had to lend a hand with a blow dryer for her to keep warm. The music video began shooting at 2PM and went on for 11 hours when work finished ended at 2AM. Before leaving work Angela joked, "You might as well let me shower here before I go." * (2019/02/15) Gigi Leung Wing Kei in the Lunar New Year film MISSBEHAVIOR (GUNG HEI BAK POR) had a hilarious performance. In one scene she ran into her dream guy in an elevator but had gas due to a stomach ailment. Luckily a friend spoke up and made the save. The dream guy was played by Gigi's husband Sergio! Gigi said, "The director had a great idea, asking my husband to play a god and helping me to get into character. I realized that my husband had a knack for acting. Actually he normally was very funny and was very pleased with his performance. (Would you like to work together again?) For a comedy or a story that is suitable for our couple relationship, but anything too tragic or turning us into enemies it would be very hard." * (2019/02/15) The Joyce Cheng Yun Yi, Jerry Lamb Hiu Fung (Lo), Alex Lam Tak Shun,Lo Hoi Pang (Brother Pang), Lin Min Chen and A Niu starred A JOURNEY OF HAPPINESS (WAN JUEN CHUEN GA FOOK) was about a family of four on vacation, from which they rediscovered the importance of those around them and learning to love in time. The story would also have pain, tears, laughter and love. Playing siblings in the film, Ah Lo, Joyce and Alex were asked if they set off sparks from their first collaboration? As the second sibling Joyce complained, "No spark at all, they don't listen to me. The middle one usually gets neglected. Alex doesn't talk, after a scene he would watch black and white documentary of the Vietnam War. I like to chat with people, so he explains it to me in grea detail. At time time I really regret asking him about it." As the oldest sibling Ah Lo also said that they had no spark, "In reality I am the youngest, so during the shoot I got into Brother Pang's strict father character to treat them two. Thus it wasn't spark, it was how to play the character well." As the youngest Alex said that at home he and his sister were often yelled at by Mommy. He would have to speak to Mommy on his sister's behalf. However this time as the youngest he was very relaxed and did not have to think about a lot. Although she complained that Ah Lo and Alex ignored her, but actually these siblings had a very pleasant working experience. As the only child she admitted that she fantasized about having siblings, especially after watching the animation GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES she saw how much the brother loved his little sister. Thus she really wanted an older brother to love her. Alex and Lo said, "In reality that wouldn't happen." Ah Lo seemed to have something to say. He denied that at home his older siblings would pick on him because they were like friends. As long as they even thought about picking on him, he would tell their father. This time being able to work with a great actor Brother Pang, they all said that they benefit a lot. Joyce said that this time when she found out about her cast mates she immediately agreed. "Because Brother Pang is a comedy master everyone knows, I hope to be able to learn from him. However Brother Pang is too amazing, when I see him I get very nervous. That kind of nervousness though is perfect for the character." * (2019/02/14) As the Year of the Pig began, the film industry spring banquets have been endless. First came the Hong Kong Stuntman Association held its spring banquet, then the Hong Kong Society of Cinematographers 31th anniversary banquet also took place two nights ago. At the Hong Kong Stuntman Association, honorary president Eric Tsang Chi Wai donated HK$ 100,000 for the charity unit to help the elderly and children with cancer. President Chin Ka Lok and Angela Tong Ying Ying, the Performing Artist Guild president Louis Koo Tin Lok, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Heung Wa Keung, Jen Jen and her son Jeremy Liu, Leung Siu Lung and Chris Lai Lok Yi attended. President Chin Ka Lok said that their association finally received a charity license to establish a foundation to help those in need. Each year they would send members to volunteer, like visiting nursing homes to give blankets to the elderly. Mr. and Mrs. Heung have always been very supportive of the Association, almost every year they would make a large sum donation. Thus he gave them special thanks on stage. Honorary president Tsang Chi Wai said, the "Stuntman Association" Was a very hard to come by association. He once established countless associations and the Stuntman Association was the most loyal and the most unreasonable. As soon as he said that the crowd applauded and roared with laughter. Chi Wai continued, "You don't what happens at all, you just can fight, can charge, and are 'bold' enough. No one asks what happens, everyone just come out as one and remember that we are stuntman. I am very happy that today I can still tell people, I started as a stuntman." Chi Wai also talked about his conflict with TVB as he fought for stuntman benefits. Tsang Chi Wai donated HK$ 100,000 to the Association's charity unit to help the elderly and children with cancer. Chi Wai also hoped that members would greet and care more about each other. The HK$ 100,000 as a charity foundation would help other members in need. * (2019/02/14) The Hong Kong Society of Cinematographers honorary president Arthur Wong Ngok Tai, Louis Koo Tin Lok, AngelaBaby (Yeung Wing), Gordon Lam Ka Tung, Alex Lam Tak Shun, Cecilia So Lai Shan, Candy Yu On On, Ling Man Lung two nights ago attended the Hong Kong Society of Cinematographers 31th anniversary banquet. As in previous years three awards were presented. Koo Tin Lok and AngelaBaby received the Most Charming Actor and Actress. The film PROJECT GUTENBERG (MO SEUNG)'s director of photography Kwan Chi Yiu won the "award of the year". Goo Jai received the charming award. He happily said that last year he won many awards in film, to be able to continue winning awards in the Year of the Pig truly was joyous and fortunate for him. The charming actors he admired would at different stages, ages, through film character interpretations, make him feel their charm. Thus there have been too many, but if he had to choose he would choose Darth Vader. As for how to be charming on camera, the position of the cinematographer was very important. It was about aesthetics, lighting, angels. AngelaBaby also agreed with what he said. Would they have the baggage of being idols? Goo Jai said, "No baggage now, even if I do it is only luggage." AngelaBaby said, "I have a little, I just carry it!" When did Goo Jai feel he was the most charming? He said, "Probably in my room at home, no one sees me so I can say whatever I want." Did he feel that he was very handsome in front of the mirror? He said, "If I look at a mirror, go wow and feel I am very handsome, I probably had a little mental disorder. I would have to see a doctor and take medication, I am just talking about myself! Actually I rarely look at the mirror, I don't have many at home. I am constantly facing the camera on the set, and I see myself on playback!" Goo Jai loved photography but he did not have a habit of shooting photos with his mobile phone, unlike some people would take photos before meals and use apps to make themselves unrecognizable. Years ago he bought a camera, as he wanted to slow down the pace and take photos. Unfortunately he has always been too busy with work to do so. Baby also loved photography, especially after becoming a mother she would always take videos and photos for "Little Sponge". She really wanted to be a photographer. Goo Jai also said that six or seven years ago he thought about directing. However an elder said to him, directing required using the camera to tell a story, which was another science. "Thus if I direct I at least have to stop being an actor to study it, unfortunately I haven't had the time to plan it. However the future film world probably would develop even more new technology and production methods to coordinate." Lam Ka Tung next month would go to Yunnan to train for his new film. Because he had to play someone who traveled across the country, he needed to improve his Putonghua and familiarize himself with how the Yunnan people lived until the official shoot in April. Ka Tung also of the film TRACEY (CHUI SZE) recently received several film offers for him to play transgender characters. He really wanted to take one, in which he would play a transsexual and would have "very extreme" performance. In addition, he would also produce a movie about seniors. He was working hard on inviting an elder everyone respected very much to perform. "I would have to kneel. If he would be willing to perform I would be very excited. However it would be very stressful because the script took 4 years to prepare!" * (2019/02/14) The Alan Mak Siu Fai directed and written Emperor Lunar New Year films INTEGRITY (LIM JING FUNG WON YIN MOK) as of yesterday made over HK$ 23 million in Hong Kong to become the Chinese film champion. Yesterday Mak Siu Fai led actors Sean Lau Ching Wan, Karena Lam Ka Yun and Anthony Ho Yuen Tung to attend audience appreciation events. At his first audience appreciation event Ching Wan was a little nervous but still remembered to take jabs at Ka Yun. Sitting with Kathy Yuen (Tong Yi) he also joked, "Finally I can go to the movies with Tong Yi." Later they also played games with the audience and gave away lai see. As for the good box office performance, Ching Wan said that everyone worked very hard on promoting so they were elated with the return. He also said that he attended the first audience appreciation event in his life. He stated that he rarely participated and was a little nervous. He did not know what he would need to do. The crew told him to quietly enter the venue and sit down as a viewer. He said that he really liked to watch movies. If suddenly a group of people entered he might not be able to accept that. Luckily the audience appreciation events were either before or after the show. No long an audience appreciation rookie, Ka Yun felt that she would be able to see the audience's feeling very directly and sincerely. Their response could be used as research. She also taught Ching Wan to remember to smile at the event. Ching Wan asked her, "What if the viewer says Ching Wan look how your acting turned out? Should I still smile?" Speaking of a sequel, Ching Wan said that he hoped to have a chance but it would depend on the boss. If so it will start production next year. Director Mak Siu Fai and Ho Yuen Tung spoke to the media. Mak Siu Fai said that he was pleased with the good box office performance and hoped that everyone would continue to support the film. He also said that the film's good word of mouth probably was connected to Hong Kong film. In addition it was more serious, he felt that not only comedy would be a hit. Planning to make sequel, he was asked whether he would fight for the Lunar New Year slot next year. He said that it would be very hard to say, the script has always come first for him. Right now he only had a concept and no complete script. This time the scrip took nine months to write. Would the sequel bring back the original team? He said that the continuation of certain characters would be even more entertaining, like Ho Yuen Tung, the Lau Ching Wan and Lam Ka Yun played couple. He even joked that next time maybe Ho Yuen Tung would be the lead. Ho Yuen Tung was scared stiff when he heard. "Whatever the director asks me to do I would do, this time being able to work with the director and a strong cast of actors I am very happy." * (2019/02/14) Simon Yam Tat Wa, Gigi Leung Wing Kei, Angela Yuen Lai Lam, Filmko boss Alex Wong Hoi Fung two nights ago attended the Hong Kong service dog movie LITTLE Q (SIU Q)'s production wrap banquet. Two of the service dogs that played Little Q appeared, one of the service dogs Pudding was very attached to Brother Wa. Brother Wa even hug Pudding for a photo. Yam Tat Wa said that before the shoot he brought Pudding home to cultivate the relationship so they became good friends. His dog at home got jealous. He believed that the 2020 Hong Kong Film Award Best Actress would definitely be Pudding. Brother Wa admitted working with puppies was very painful. Because Little Q was played by 8 dogs, 6 of them had over 40 bad takes. Pudding was very nice and at most would have 3 or 4 bad takes, perhaps because they already had a couple relationship. Would his wife Qi Qi be jealous? Brother Wa said, "No, Qi Qi watched the third party come in. Because Pudding and I have some special training, it is always following me around. It is very obedient." He also said that before the shoot he had a "darkness class", as he had to be blindfolded in a 400 foot dark room to experience the life without vision. The feeling was pretty scary because I had no idea what I would run into. In the end I would remember the setting in the dark room and the test score was 80. Speaking of the just announced Hong Kong Film Award nominations, he congratulated the film PROJECT GUTENBERG (MO SEUNG) and praised Anthony Wong Chau Sun and Francis Ng Chun Yu's MEN ON THE DRAGON (YIK LAU DAI SHOOK) as great. They all truly deserved their nominations. Everyone said that only one would win Best Actor. Brother Wa said, "You may get double yolk, moon cakes have double yolk, quadruple yolk, just not quintuple yolk. Each movie is entertaining. MEN's low budget production was very natural, the director handled it very well." Gigi said that she admired director Law Wing Cheong's patience very much because the puppy constantly stepped on the bottom line. Thus working with animals was a great challenge. For her, acting with a puppy was also a test of patience. Luckily at home she had experience with dogs, and working with the puppy was very simple. Thus the shoot was rather easy. The film's protagonist this time was Little Q, which was also a challenge to their acting. Thus they all could be nominated for Best New Actor awards. She also hoped through this film to bring everyone's attention to the problem of service dog integration into the society. Gigi spent the Lunar New Year in Hong Kong and everyday she has been busy with Lunar New Year visits. She said, "When my daughter sees Uncle and Auntie she would take the initiative with New Year greetings, she could practice social interaction and courage." Today is Valentine's Day, Gigi said, "We aren't done with Lunar New Year visits, so we haven't been free to think about Valentine's Day. Every year Valentine's Day has been a world of three. My husband doesn't want to leave his little love, me either. So we expect to celebrate together." [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. TA KUNG PAO, FEBRUARY 14 2019, EAST AND WEST FILM NEW KING OF COMEDY LACKS SORROW HAS INSPIRATION Inside a successful comedy is often tragedy. Stephen Chow Sing Chi's KING OF COMEDY (HEI KET JI WONG) 20 years ago made a successful demonstration of those words. This film's position was unique among his comedy series, at the same time it introduced anew the long out of print AN ACTOR PREPARES to the general public. 20 years later, his NEW KING OF COMEDY (SUN HEI KET JI WONG) again played the story of small figures dreaming of stardom. - HUNG KWONG However, the stage of NEW KING OF COMEDY's struggle went from the Hong Kong studios to the Mainland studios. Chow Sing Chi retreated from on to off screen. The protagonist went from Wan Tin Sau to Yu Meng. Both were stories of chasing dreams, but with delicate differences. NEW KING OF COMEDY's protagonist Yu Meng was an extra/crowd actor who has worked hard for years at the studio but unable to move up. Although she fought hard for her opportunities to perform, she was defeated time and again and kept running into walls; only her boyfriend Charlie has always encouraged her to chase her dream. Yu Meng at the studio ran into an over the hill star Mark. Once an inspiration to Yu Meng, Mark now hid his disillusionment with boldness and tortured Yu Meng nonstop. Yet Yu Meng just rolled with it and kept working hard, because she still had to support her boyfriend's dream. Yet after numerous career and life setbacks, Yu Meng finally had to face the choice between dreams and reality...... Finally Success For Extras After Endless Toiling In comparison to Hong Kong comedy of the same period, Chow Sing Chi's film actually was more strict about its drama. The complete three act structure could often be seen. The so-called Mo Le Tau referred more to the expression of comedy. NEW KING OF COMEDY was the same way, Yu Meng grew up in the struggle that kept escalating, overcoming various conflicts to elevate herself. Overlooking the comedy, this was also an complete inspirational film. Both were struggles of studio extras, aside from the old version NEW KING OF COMEDY also reminded people of the movie I AM SOMEBODY. Yet whether it was Wan Tin Sau or I's Hengdian crowd players, they had no family support behind them. In comparison, Yu Meng had an aging father who might voice his opposition but still secretly supported her. Thus she was much more fortunate. From this point, the difference in Chow Sing Chi's attitude between the two KING OF COMEDY also could be seen. In the old KING OF COMEDY, Wan Tin Sau ran into an escort who was studying performance and an undercover cop. The story developed like a fantasy, but its depiction of show business itself was calm without any reservation for dreams. The dream of stardom was only a mirage, returning to his original form his final stage was only the Kaifong Welfare Association's amateur performance of THUNDERSTORM. As a Lunar New Year film back then, it did not provide the audience with the comfort of an overnight success and hard work yields fruit in the end. At most it only had the grass root happiness of mutual sympathy from those who were struggling to survive. NEW KING OF COMEDY was like its protagonist's name Yu Meng (like a dream); although all along she kept suffering insults and swindles, in the end she still succeeded like a dream and even won Best Actress. When the audience left the movie they were very at peace. No Way To Clone Chow Sing Chi's Performance On the other hand, the new version's depiction of crowd player life was rather realistic. In order to make a living (and supporting her boyfriend), Yu Meng had to work odd jobs to make money. It was quite different from the old version's exaggerated and fictional feeling. The realism of the new version at one point made this writer feel that the Mainland studio struggle pairing with the 80s Cantonese pop songs was somewhat strange. Of course the use of a more "realistic" stroke to tell a fantasy story also drastically differed from the old version's use of exaggerated and cartoonish details to depict the tragic "reality". Stanislavski's AN ACTOR PREPARES connected the two version of KING OF COMEDY. Wan Tin Sau and Yu Meng both used it as a guide for their acting. Before they shaped their characters they had to understand where the story came from and headed to. With "the conscious road to the gate of the subconscious, the intended road to the gate of the unintended" method, they were not only seen by the crew as gumming up the work but also if they ran into directors who believed in "don't act, model" from Bresson's NOTES ON CINEMATOGRAPHER they certainly would be ejected from the studio immediately. Interestingly, Chow Sing Chi became the King of Comedy exactly because of his natural yet formulaic, unique performance rhythm that deeply held on to the audience's laughter. Yet when he only directed and no longer performed on screen, the Mainland actors who truly have trained in the Stanislavski system were never able to replicate that type of comedic rhythm in the films that he directed. 2. TA KUNG PAO, FEBRUARY 14 2019, LIGHT SHADOW PATH LUNAR NEW YEAR "NEW BEATS OLD" For the first column in the Year of the Pig, I wish everyone advancement and good health in the New Year. The dust has settled on this year's Lunar New Year films. In the Mainland, THE WANDERING EARTH certainly hogged on the top spot, we shall see if it will be able to break THE WOLF WARRIOR II's box office record. The first and second runner probably will be CRAZY ALIEN and PEGASUS. Unexpectedly, the Alan Mak Siu Fai directed INTEGRITY (LIM JING FUNG WON YIN MOK) came in last. Actually several Hong Kong "big shots" did not perform too well this year. The Stephen Chow Sing Chi directed NEW KING OF COMEDY (SUN HEI KET JI WONG) just made over 500 million RMB, far from the 1 billion or more box office of the past; Jackie Chan's THE KNIGHT OF SHADOW: BETWEEN YIN AND YANG only made 130 million and had no hope to reach the 200 million total as if time went back to years ago. The Hong Kong crime films CHASING THE DRAGON (JUI LUNG) and COLD WAR II (HONG JIN I)'s box office were around 600 million. The Felix Chong Man Keung directed PROJECT GUTENBERG (MO SEUNG) made 1.2 billion and broke the upper limit, hence INTEGRITY was scheduled for the Spring Festival against strong competition to vie for the "championship". Unfortunately it slipped out of the gate. Summing up this year's New Spring slot films, virtual beats actual, and science fiction beats reality; new beats old, the future beats the past. NEW KING OF COMEDY and INTEGRITY were more realistic, THE KNIGHT OF SHADOW: BETWEEN YIN AND YANG was a past (ancient) story; losing to THE WANDERING EARTH, CRAZY ALIEN seemed "matter of fact" but what about to PEGASUS? PEGASUS was also close to reality. Thus the above analysis was only inductive reasoning, the most important elements of box office success were the "admission desire and the "departure impression". During the Lunar New Year's Day release the highest "admission desire" was CRAZY ALIEN, but the best "departure impression" was THE WANDERING EARTH. Thus it caught up from behind at the box office. However, new beats old is real. The audience likes new things. THE KNIGHT OF SHADOW: BETWEEN YIN AND YANG before its release already was not a favorite, because the STRANGE STORIES FROM A CHINESE STUDIO packaging was old. If young viewers did not know Pu Songling was the STRANGE STORIES writer, the situation would be even worse; KNIGHT then became an unknown costume detective film. NEW KING OF COMEDY although had the word "new" was obviously an old subject. Like old wine in a new bottle, it would not be the first choice. As for INTEGRITY, despite the excellent production and the "Mak Chong" quality guarantee, David Lam Tak Luk has already directed this subject in three anti corruption STORM movies. Their box office were over 90 million, 200 million and 400 million, the results were outstanding. If similar subjects were release "ICAC fatigue" could easily appear and the "admission desire" would not be high. If the "admission desire" would not be high, the battle has already been lost. From Mainland reviews, some viewers did not understand what INTEGRITY wanted to say because the surface "evidence" was the ICAC investigator originally wanted to hunt a "big tiger". In the end the "big tiger" got away, his buddy sold him out and he was forced to resign. He seemed to be left with nothing. Yet the Hong Kong audience might understand even better how ICAC operated and appreciated the production excellence. Thus it stood tall at the box office, which could be considered as a little comfort. - TIN LIK 3. TA KUNG PAO, FEBRUARY 14 2019, THE WEEK IN FILM NEW SPRING BOX OFFICE OPENS HIGH In the New Year, I wish readers Happy New Year and Happy Living. In this year's New Spring slot, Hong Kong box office grew from the same period last year. Last week the total box office was HK$ 99.9 million, HK$ 76.9 million more than the prior week; last year in the same period the box office was HK$ 84.21 million, a gain of almost HK$ 15.7 million. The performance has been rather sizable, given a shot of confidence after several weeks of low box office and hope for breakthrough in this year's box office. At the box office, the top three were all Lunar New Year new releases. In first place was the Japanese classic manga adaptation ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL. In second was the Alan Mak Siu Fai directed INTEGRITY (LIM JING FUNG WON YIN MOK, almost HK$ 500,000 behind ALITA and lost by a "nose"; in third place was Stephen Chow Sing Chi's NEW KING OF COMEDY (SUN HEI KET JI WONG), over HK$ 4 million less than INTEGRITY; in fourth was the animation blockbuster in its second week of release HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD, with HK$ 5.89 million more than its first week; in fifth place was also in its second week, the Pang Ho Cheung directed MISSBEHAVIOR (GUNG HEI BAK POR). As for other Lunar New Year films, the Andrew Lam Man Chung directed A LIFETIME TREASURE (YU JU YU BO) made HK$ 7.92 million in sixth place. Over two weeks it made HK$ 9.13 million; the Wong Cho Lam directed I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE! (NEI MAI LEI, NGOR OI NEI!) made HK$ 5.66 million in seventh place, over two weeks it made HK$ 7.54 million; MARY POPPINS RETURNS made HK$ 3.95 million in eighth place, over two weeks it made HK$ 6.09 million. As for new releases, the animation THE LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART made HK$ 1.7 million in ninth place, with advanced screenings it made HK$ 2.09 million; the Mainland film PEPPA CELEBRATES CHINESE NEW YEAR made HK$ 430,000 in twelfth place. This week six new films will be release, all with rave reviews: The Glenn Close starred THE WIFE, the Liam Neeson starred action film COLD PURSUIT; the French film LITTLE TICKLES; the Swedish film BORDER; the Taiwan documentary LOVE TALK; and the Japanese animated film MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM NT. At the Mainland box office, the Mainland science fiction film became the big winner. The Guo Fan directed, Wu Jing starred science fiction disaster film THE WANDERING EARTH came in first; the Ning Hao directed, Huang Bo starred science fiction comedy CRAZY ALIEN came in second. The Han Han directed PEGASUS came in third; NEW KING OF COMEDY came in fourth; the animation BOONIE BEARS: BLAST INTO THE PAST came in fifth. As for other Lunar New Year films, the Hong Kong hit INTEGRITY in the Mainland made 94.94 million RMB in eighth place; the Vash Yan Jia directed, Jackie Chan starred costume action film THE KNIGHT OF SHADOW: BETWEEN YIN AND YANG made 128.69 million RMB in sixth place; PEPPA CELEBRATES CHINESE NEW YEAR made 112.05 million RMB in seventh place. At the U.S. box office, THE WANDERING EARTH opened on 46 screens and made US$ 1.68 million in thirteenth place. With advanced screenings it made US$ 2.18 million; PEPPA CELEBRATES CHINESE NEW YEAR opened on 67 screens and made US$ 66,000 in forty third place, with advanced screenings it made US$ 114,000. Opening January 31 2019 Trailer : https://youtu.be/qe_oUETtjTM [ BROADWAY CIRCUIT ] Morikazu Kumagai (aka Mori) was born in 1880 and became one of Japan's most celebrated 20th-century painters. His gift for painting was recognized very early on in his career but the opinions of critics and fame were never his priority. His sporadic output didn't result in sales. He didn't own a house and survived with friends' help until the age of 50 when his paintings began to sell and he could at last support his family. The Emperor was full of admiration for a Kumagai painting he saw at the prestigious Nika Art Exhibition. This brought recognition to Kumagai who was known as the "hermetic sage with a paintbrush" but Kumagai twice turned down the Emperor's Japanese order of Culture award. The reason he gave for declining these awards was that he was already receiving too many visitors. True to his reclusive nature, he barely left his 60-square-meter home for 30 years. He didn't have to because he observed animals and plants in his little garden. This movie is based on an actual account; it depicts one day in his twilight years when he never left home. In 2028, Taiwan is suffering from nuclear waste ("The Can of Anido"), migrant workers ("942"), industrial collapse ("Way Home"), low birth rates and diversity in families ("A Making-Of"), and insomnia ("The Sleep"). These destructive issues are the results of our present day. One man's old wounds return as environmental pollution disrupts societal relationships, blowing back as an attack on mankind. The film asks, how did things get this bad? And it asks once more, are these problems exclusive to Taiwan ten years from now? Of the five films, only "A Making Of" has a happy ending. The film is a part of the "10 Years" series being made throughout Asia. It began in 2015 in Hong Kong, and was followed by Ten Years Japan, Ten Years Thailand, and now, Ten Years Taiwan. Each director predicts a different "Taiwan in Ten Years", but every one of them is a summons for us in the present day.
