MISCELLANEOUS * (2019/02/06) The Emperor Lunar New Year epic INTEGRITY (LIM JING FUNG WON YIN MOK) yesterday opened in Hong Kong as many shows were sold out. Other shows were closed to sold out and only had individual seats left. The box office for the entire film was over HK$ 3.5 million as it became the single day Chinese and foreign film box office champion! Lead Lau Ching Wan could not be more surprised to hear the news. "The film's opening performance was so great, of course I am excited! Thank you very much to everyone for their support, and I want to wish each viewer Happy New Year, everything going your way and good health." The three leads talked about the film's many heavy scenes, which were rather stressful to perform as they had to highly focus their attention. Ka Yun even revealed that she did not have enough scenes with Ching Wan. "I was with Ka Fai for a month, which was more than enough, but with Ching Wan I only had three days. I didn't feel it was enough. I can have more fun." Since their other halves were all in the business, Ka Yun stated that she liked to work with her director husband Yuen Kim Fai as they could set off even more spark. Yet Ka Fai and Ching Wan disagreed, feeling that their identities would become complicated and concerning. Ka Fai said, "You have to talk to her at work and you still have to talk to her at home, forget it!" Ching Wan said, "After I finish the movie I originally am done and can leave work, but if she isn't done I can't go. Then would I have to wait for her too?" The trio earlier had a New Year meal together. Ka Fai while getting cucumber for Ching Wan said, "I wish your work next year 'Ding Gua Gua' (top notch)!" Ka Fai said that when he was little his family was strict. At a New Year meal he reached across the table to get a chicken leg, his sister said that he was impolite, slapped him and made him bleed all over the table! He also remembered when he was little the whole family would go to an early morning show, back then Hong Kong film was at its peak! Ching Wan's Lunar birthday was on the Lunar 4th, the Lunar New Year was his favorite holiday. Everyone then broke into a birthday song for him. Ka Yun remembered her grandma's home cooking, when she called her arms would "flap around" in a very familiar way. Ka Fai said, "I thought you were going to say your grandma worked out." * (2019/02/05) Nick Cheung Ka Fai and Sean Lau Ching Wan worked together again after five years on the Emperor Lunar New Year film INTEGRITY (LIM JING FUNG WON YIN MOK) and sparks continued to fly. Speaking of the busy promotional schedule before the Lunar New Year, both said that they could not welcome it more because starting on the Lunar New Year's Day they would have a few days off. Ka Fai joked that with the rare holiday he was locked in on slacking off, sleeping and eating at home. "Originally I wanted to go on vacation but we would have a New Year visit conflict, we would have to go to Sister Sin's (Pak Suet Sin) so we couldn't go! (Would you cook at home?) I am too lazy! Usually I would slack off, sleep and eat, be myself, rest until I was like someone with nothing to live for! However sometimes I would exercise a little, after UNBEATABLE (GIK JIN) I would been keeping up with the work out!" Directing in recent years, would he follow up again in the Year of the Pig? Ka Fai said that indeed he had subjects that he wanted to make, however as an actor his schedule was already full. Would he work with his "benefactor" Dante Lam Chiu Yin again? He said, "Does he still know me? I know he is making a 600 million yuan new film! A Hong Kong style team like me and Lam Chiu Yin, I would want to do it again. He too wants to return to Hong Kong and make some domestic movies, so everything would have to wait until he finishes his stuff first!" Ching Wan said that he did not pay attention to what happened in the Year of the Dog, but joked, "As long as I didn't kill anyone it's fine! I met my target there, and I was able to make movies that I liked. In the Year of the Pig I would choose to try something that isn't right for me. I have to believe in the director. Then I wish for good health and more happiness." INTEGRITY opened officially today and its Hong Kong advanced ticket sales have been enthusiastic, sold out on the Lunar New Year's Day. On the Lunar 2nd and 3rd almost 90% of the tickets have been sold. Emperor currently is looking into adding cinemas and shows for more viewers to be able to enjoy the film. INTEGRITY also had a major explosion scene as its focus. In it Lau Ching Wan while looking for an important witness found where he hid his wife and child. As he arrived with his subordinate a big explosion took place. For the effect, the actors had to be extremely close to the explosion. Alan Mak Siu Fai said, "This scene required many arrangements in advance. Because the set was constructed, we had to have many meetings, designed all the action with the explosive team and the action director. Even the door angle had to be very precise. Because it was a real explosion, actors would get hurt if they got very near. Safety came first. If you did everything, the shot would only take 3 minutes to shoo. Yet before hand it needed 30 hours to prepared. After spending that time, the result was good and the shoot was very smooth because you have already done it once." Ching Wan praised the director, "The timing of this scene's shoot was very accurate. Director Mak's schedule also was very clear, the guidance was very orderly. Very rarely did anyone just sat there on the set." * (2019/02/05) Wong Cho Lam two nights ago went to cheer on Kaki Leung, Roxanne Yeung Lok Man, Crystal Fung Ying Ying and Bowie Cheung Bo Yi's stall at the Kuen Tong New Year Market. He prepared over 100 movie tickets to his film I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE! (NEI MAI LEI, NGOR OI NEI!) as gifts. He said that he has not been to the New Year Market for a very long time. "Lately I have been to the movies a lot, after that I would rush home to see my daughter. Actually here I have girls to see too, but the girl at my home is the prettiest." Because he has been busy with the promotions, so far he still has not have time to have the Lunar New Year dinner. He joked that he was afraid his wife Leanne Li Yanan would yell at him. * (2019/02/04) With 3 Best Actors and 2 Best Actresses, the Emperor Motion Picture INTEGRITY (LIM JING FUNG WON YIN MOK) will open tomorrow, on Lunar New Year's Day, in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Sean Lau Ching Wan, Nick Cheung Ka Fai, and Karena Lam Ka Yun even personally promoted in the Mainland. To celebrate the New Spring, 3 Best Actors and Actress competed in zong making! INTEGRITY is Alan Mak Siu Fai directed, Felix Chong Man Keung and Wong Bun produced, Best Actors and Actresses Lau Ching Wan, Cheung Ka Fai, Lam Ka Yun, Anita Yuen Wing Yi, Alex Fong Chung Shun, with Carlos Chan Ka Lok and Kathy Yuen (Tong Yi). The Mainland promotional tour reached Jiaxing and Ching Wan, Ka Fai and Ka Yun appeared together. With new spring on the way, Ching Wan, Ka Fai and Ka Yun experienced the local New Year atmosphere and tried to make the traditional Jiaxing Zong. At the event the three and Jiaxing zong masters competed in a zong making race; in the end the lady on Ka Fai's team was the fastest. Ka Fai in the one minute short zong making process learned that the lady made zong with her husband as a couple; Ching Wan was concerned with how long the zong would have to cook before it could be eaten; Ka Yun with the help of the master personally made a zong and was praised for her skills. The event presented for the Best Actors and the Best Actress a big drum with a tiger's head sticker for their drum ceremony. Ching Wan, Ka Fai and Ka Yun kept having fun; on one hand Ka Yun and Ka Fai played the drum together, on the other hand Ching Wan also "complained" that Ka Yun almost hit him; Ka Fai even banged the drum and he hummed George Lam Chi Cheung's hit from ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA. * (2019/02/04) Wong Cho Lam challenged himself with a musical for his directing debut. The film was even scheduled for a Lunar New Year release. Although his daughter Gabrielle was just born, in order to promote the film he would not even have Lunar New Year off as he would have to attend audience appreciation events to pump up the box office. His wife Leanne Li Yanan would be responsible for getting lai see for their daughter. Then on their wedding anniversary, he and his wife Li Yanan would relax a little with a vacation for two. This Lunar New Year to Wong Cho Lam absolutely would be a special one. Aside from his daughter Gabrielle being born, his directing debut I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE! (NEI MAI LEI, NGOR OI NEI!) was arranged for a Lunar New Year release. Thus he would not get the Lunar New Year off as he would have to promote hard for the film. However, earlier he took time to cook as he personally made piggy tangyuan to celebrate the Year of the Pig. Actually he had a way with tangyuan making, he attentively made the pig ears and snout and the finished product looked right. He pointed out that this year with a new addition to the family he felt life was even more perfect. However he has been always with work all along, even for Lunar New Year he would not be able to spend time with his wife and daughter. He said, "Earlier I just studied my schedule with Yanan to find out how many days I would be at home during the New Year. Because I have a movie release and would have to attend audience appreciation events nonstop, I can only send Yanan to get lai see for our daughter. Then for our wedding anniversary on February 14th Valentine's Day, I will go on vacation with Yanan, just the two of us. Mommy would take care of our daughter." As for leaving their newborn daughter to go on vacation, Cho Lam said that he even was reluctant he had to. Yanan needed the "release". He said, "Yanan gave birth via cesarean and took half a month to recover. She couldn't eat anything. Actually during the month long maternity rest she could go out, so she already planned when she could go out and have fun. However when she wanted to go, I was either busy with post production or with promotion. So we have to wait until Valentine's Day to celebrate all at once. After the holiday we will continue to work. This New Year is very special, I used to give lai see and get nothing back. This year since I can get it back I will get it back in full. (If you have a few more you can get more?) This year the interest starts, after a few more I can make back cost, haha." Speaking of directing for the first time, Cho Lam stated that he was anxious. This year many Chinese Lunar New Year film suddenly appeared, but he was very happy that the audience would have even more choices. Was choosing a musical for his directing debut very risky? He said, "Absolutely it is, but I feel for the first time I have to find a subject I like and at the same time I can answer to investors with. They gave me a lot of suggestions, so the film got a Lunar New Year release. All star song and dance in a serious production has their advantages, in the past Chinese musicals' results have been lacking. Few had high box office take, but this time was a comedy. I felt I could let go and take the gamble, to make a musical that belonged to Hong Kong. The last Hong Kong musical would have to go back to the black and white era, the most recent was PERHAPS LOVE (YU GOR OI) but that wasn't a pure musical. We even sang the lines, it was a musical film that belonged to this generation of Hong Kong people." Cho Lam admitted that directing this time was very stressful. He did not know that whether viewers would like it, was afraid that he was too extreme and would make investors lose money. Thus this performance would determine whether he would keep directing. * (2019/02/04) Gigi Leung Wing Kei yesterday with Susan Shaw Yam Yam, Isabel Chan Yat Ning and director Pang Ho Cheung attended the Lunar New Year film MISSBEHAVIOR (GUNG HEI BAK POR)'s audience appreciation event. They even played games to give away a plane ticket to thank the viewers for their support. Gigi said that she was happy for director Pang Ho Cheung that three days of advanced screenings had great performance. Speaking of the film being number one among the numerous Lunar New Year films, Gigi hoped that the momentum would continue to be strong. She also was very happy that this year's Lunar New Year films were in full bloom, with many Hong Kong films. This phenomenon has not been seen in a very long time, which made everyone focus back on Hong Kong films. Has she seen the movie? Gigi said that not yet as she planned to see it after its official release, because she liked to see the live audience reaction. Gigi revealed that after the audience appreciation event she would "shut down the oven". She would stay in Hong Kong for the New Year because she wanted her daughter to experience the New Year atmosphere. Her daughter lately has already begun to help with decorating the home. Did she teach her daughter any New Year greeting? Gigi said, "She knows how to say Gung Hei Fat Choi. My husband only knows Happy New Year, Good Health and Gung Hei Fat Choi. Everyone would accept it more from foreigners, so when we pay New Year visits I don't have to say it." Gigi also said that Director Pang has already given them the good news that the film received an offer from Hollywood, and she would look forward to seeing the Hollywood version. She said, "The nosy bitches subject has no territorial restrictions, they are all over the world. It is a type of social ecology." Speaking of Director Pang once promising to take the team skiing if the film made more than HK$ 25 million, Gigi wanted to go to a hot spring instead. Did she want to benefit Director Pang? She said that Director Pang could pay but would not "share the bath". * (2019/02/04) Despite being with child, Eliza Sam Lai Heung earlier teamed with Vincent Wong Ho Shun on Wong Cho Lam's directing debut, the Lunar New Year film I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE! (NEI MAI LEI, NGOR OI NEI!) shot an entertaining "cool guy, hot girl" scene. One was healthy, sexy and the other showed off his arms and tip top sharp. Many workers praised the light busting "nosebleed index", absolutely a big Easter egg for the film. Heung Heung was in great shape during the shoot and did not show any sign of pregnancy at all. Thus when workers learned that they knew during the shoot she was already pregnant, they were all surprised and praised her for getting her all to support her friend Cho Lam. * (2019/02/04) Louis Koo Tin Lok's company One Cool Jam Cast's artists Jennifer Yu Heung Yi, Fish Liew Chi Yu, Bryant Mak Chi Lok and Yanny Chan Wing Yan made couplet for the holiday and wished everyone good health, all the good luck in the new year. Looking back in the past year, the four performed in the film industry. Among them getting rave reviews for her performance in MEN ON THE DRAGON (YIK LAU DAI SHOOK), Yu Heung Yi looked forward to being able to make even more real situation films in the Year of the Pig. She said, "I want to make more small budget productions, films that reflect social problems. I hope the audience will be able to relate to them." Yu Heung Yi also said that she had to learn to relax. "I am very tense personally. Sometimes after a scene, I would feel that my performance wasn't too great. I would keep thinking about it over and over, leading to insomnia all night. Thus emotional problems appeared and hormones were out of balance. Last year I learned that I had early stage ovarian cyst, so in the New Year I have to learn to release my emotions." She revealed that she would take a holiday to rest and in April she would make two new films. Yu Heung Yi's buddy Liew Chi Yu joked that every year's New Spring she hoped to quit drinking cold beverage, sleeping late, being late and other bad habits, but in the end she was unable to fulfill them. In the Year of the Pig, she wished the most to learn to manage her finances. "I have never known how much money I have made, and have no idea when the money has been spent. For half a year I used working hard as an excuse and bought whatever I saw and wanted, I spent more and more money. Thus in the Year of the Pig I want to properly grasp financial management concepts." New addition to One Cool Jam Cast, Mak Chi Lok and Yanny revealed that they just finished the new film YOLO. Yanny even worked on a comedy for the first time and thought it was special Speaking of New Year wishes, she stated, "I hope to enroll in a voice acting class, learn accurate pronunciation and lose years of relaxed pronunciation." Mak Chi Lok hoped that in Year of the Pig he would be able to work with boss Louis Koo Tin Lok on a movie. "I hope to be able to come in touch with different areas of film. Right now I am writing two movies. I hope to be able to catch the film company's eyes." * (2019/02/03) Alex Fong Lik Sun and Ivana Wong Yuen Chi have worked together countless times in film. In the Lunar New Year film I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE! they challenged a musical film for the first time. Although they both started as singers and only worked together on one of the vignettes, they were fully prepared beforehand. Siu Fong said that although he was paid for the film, he was not for the recording before! Fong Lik Sun and Wong Yuen Chi with their singing background should have an easier time with the Lunar New Year musical film I LOVE YOU's performance, but both admitted that it was not easy at all. A musical style film was completely different from pure singing. Siu Fong said, "I only performed in one of the vignettes, but took a whole day to record before hand. I got paid by the day for the film production, but not for the recording. However I still admire Cho Lam's determination to make a musical film, truly he needed a lot of passion to be able to get it done." Siu Fong stated that he was very surprised to learn that Wong Cho Lam would make a musical film. He did not understand why he would choose such an alternative genre. later he realized that with his Performing Art Academy background Wong wanted to bring the exaggerated stage comedy feeling to the audience. Wong Yuen Chi also said, "I know Cho Lam spent 2 years to negotiate the script rights in the U.S. I watched him overcome numerous obstacles before getting the rights, which made him even worthier to support. This time Siu Fong's performance in the film absolutely would open people's eyes. I didn't expect him to be the musical material. We can go on tour to sing musicals, which definitely would be a lot of fun." Siu Fong and Yuen Chi have worked together many times in film, but each time they had different chemical reaction. Would they hope that next time they would no longer be funny and make a serious romance instead? They lovingly looked at each other and after two seconds broke into laughter. Yuen Chi said, "I really can't, with Siu Fong comedy has more spark." I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE was a big ensemble production. Its cheerful atmosphere was the right Lunar New Year joyous celebration feeling. Siu Fong and Yuen Chi both hoped that the film would perform well at the box office. They even personally made couplets to wish everyone "good luck and smooth sailing in the year of the pig". Having studied calligraphy, Wong Yuen Chi wrote well. She said that she really liked to celebrate the Lunar New Year because she would be able to enjoy a lot of snacks. She would also decorate her home for the holiday. Siu Fong last year after starting a swim school has focused on his career. In the new year he swore to start dating again. "I would always look at my astrological forecast for the year. The master said that this year would be beneficial for my career and marriage, so I would try to find the other half." * (2019/02/03) Andrew Lam Man Chung, Louis Cheung Kai Chung, Xenia Chong Shui Yi two nights ago attended an audience appreciation event for their Lunar New Year film A LIFETIME TREASURE (YU JU YU BO). Ah Chung said that his film has been postponed for production in Guizhou in March, thus he was able to participate in recent audience appreciation events and the premiere. He was also able to stay in Hong Kong for the New Year with his wife and children. "Aside from being able to stay in Hong Kong for a commercial, I can even pay New Year visits and go to the New Year Market with my family." Because he would have to stay two to three months in the Mainland for his film, he was reluctant to be apart from his wife and children. "I have been quite conflicted. Because my relationship with my daughter is great, she always wants to play with me. I am afraid that when I come back I would have to start over. So now I have never too far from her, I am going heavy in hopes that the relationship foundation would still be there." Would this be the longest he would be away from his daughter? He said, "Don't mention it, I had to consider it for a very long time because the script would be worth making. My wife may bring the kids to visit the set, but I have to evaluate the environment first. Ultimately the shoot would be in the mountains." Would he cry from missing his daughter? He said, "Since you are asking now of course I wouldn't, I am afraid that when I get back to the hotel I would sob when the mood would strike." Chong Shui Yi said that in one scene Teddy Robin Kwan was so excited to see her that his nose spray blood. Have men in real life fainted from being under her spell? She said, "Once at a parking lot a car almost hit me. At the time I was wearing shorts. The driver stared at me and almost ran me over." She joked that she would pay attention to what she would wear. * (2019/02/03) The Lunar New Year film MISSBEHAVIOR (GUNG HEI BAK POR)'s DaDa Chan Jing, Tsui Tin Yau, Susan Shaw Yam Yam, Isabel Chan Yat Ning and Hanjin Tan (Chan Woon Yan) yesterday visited the Victoria Park New Year Market. Chan Jing pointed out that she has not been to the New Year Market in years, in the past Mommy bought her peach blossom for her. This year she would be able to personally bring it home and wish that it would be luck with people and romance, but she definitely did not want any that would be extreme or rotten. The film after two days already made HK$ 1.1 million. DaDa revealed that the director has already agreed to take the cast to skiing in Hokkaido if the film would reach HK$ 25 million at the box office. He would even personally teach skiing, but she would get another instructor. DaDa said that she was confident about reaching the goal and has already begun to start talking about the trip on her "nosy bitches" group. If they could not reach the goal, she would pay for her own ski trip. Thus she has been working hard on audience appreciation events. DaDa was dressed in black because of water weight, which she said was in preparation for her new film. She said, "I haven't exercised in two months, after the Lunar New Year I will get back into shape. The new film would require me to gain 10 pounds first in a month then lose 20 pounds. I am not fat enough yet, and I can't skip to the thin part first." DaDa was no worried that her body would not be able to take it and felt that the good character was worth the sacrifice. Thus after the job she would take care of her health. Now she has already quit alcohol, cold beverage and would bring warm water with her. Even if she was made fun of as a "middle aged woman" she would not mind. She did everything to get into a good habit for good health. * (2019/02/03) The Wong Cho Lam directed Lunar New Year film I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE! (NEI MAI LEI, NGOR OI NEI!) has already opened. Cho Lam has been promoting the new film and attending audience appreciation events all over. He even revealed that he went undercover to see the reaction at various cinemas in Hong Kong. Cho Lam even said that some viewers came all the way from the Mainland to support him. He also took the chance to gauge Mainland audience's taste and kill two birds with one stone. Wong Cho Lam yesterday attended a special screening at a Tuen Mun shopping center and shared his directing debut experience with 500 viewers. Cho Lam said that from contacts with 500 viewers all at once, he learned their expectations and views on the film. It truly was a very rare experience. Some viewers even came all the way from the Mainland to support him. He said that he could gauge Mainland audience's taste and kill two birds with one stone. Cho Lam revealed that since the film's release on January 31st, he personally went to different cinemas all over Hong Kong for audience appreciation events everyday and get and understand of each viewers' opinions. Aside from the announced audience appreciation shows, Cho Lam even made several "surprise attack" on cinemas to surprise the audience. He was very happy to see everyone laughing heartily while watching the film. Speaking of audience appreciation, Cho Lam thanked the actors who were also attending audience appreciation events in person like he did. "I can't be in so many places at once. I want to thank them for helping to bring the joy of the film to even more viewers." Cho Lam as usual posed for a group photo with the audience and wish everyone good luck in the Year of the Pig! The China Hong Kong Haikou Association earlier held a Lunar New Year charity screening and supported I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE! with a group of guests. Cho Lam, Alice Lau Nga Lai and Li Ni showed their support. The event presented coconuts with the words "Double Happiness" to Cho Lam to wish him double happiness this year in advance. In the end he even posed for a group photo with the audience. Cho Lam asked the audience when they last saw a Cantonese musical film. "My guess is even if you have, it would be the ones from the 60s and the 70s with Sister Fong Fong and Brother Chau. We haven't made a musical film in very long time, so for the Lunar New Year I hope to present a cheerful and cheery Cantonese musical film to everyone." He hoped that musical films would not be limited to just English ones, they should probably have Chinese ones too. This film was about the relationship between the sexes and love. With an all star cast, the film had many hilarious parts. He hoped through this film to give love and joy to those around him during the New Year. Li Ni felt that this event was very meaningful. "This is a charity screening. We of course pay a lot of attention to the donation amount in hopes of repaying of the community." She was very grateful to Cho Lam for giving the ticket, saving 100 tickets for the low income family students. She appreciated that the director's courage to innovate. "I know this film will be around the Lunar New Year, I feel that it is full of love so we click right away. This film is very suitable for our event, a get together for everyone during the New Year to bring the atmosphere of love." In addition, she even thanked the Association volunteers and said that time was very valuable but they still made time to support the event, bring love to the community and the country. She hoped to thank them for their contributions through this film. * (2019/02/03) Stephen Chow Sing Chi's movies have brought everyone endless joy. As a director he was a "tyrant" about his actors' performance. In the latest NEW KING OF COMEDY special "Director's Rage", director Chow Sing Chi displayed how strict he was about the details of the film and actors. At the time the video also showed a walk on the waves poster, as Wang Baoqiang, Vin E Jingwen and others put on funny costumes and walked on the waves in AN ACTOR PREPARES with bold spirit. Sing Yeh said, "You don't look right at all, what are you doing?" On the KING OF COMEDY set, Sing Yeh had to turn every actor upside down and inside out for honing. When anyone's performance did not meet Sing Yeh's demands, he shook his head, pouted and buried his face into his hands to express his displeasure. Sing Yeh did not show any mercy for even the actor's speaking tone or even a single word of "oh". In the special, lead actress E Jingwen was baffled once. "Wasn't that a good take? We still need another one." Sing Yeh asked E Jingwen, "Do you want to continue or just leave it like this?" E Jingwen said, "Because this is Chow Sing Chi's movie, I have to perform Chow Sing Chi's style." Each actor under Sing Yeh's strict demands achieved their best. Although the special showed Sing Yeh "hammering" the actors and the continuously suffering the actors had during the shoot, but after meeting the director's demands in the end they were still able to ge Sing Yeh's recognition. * (2019/02/02) The Avenue of Stars recently opened again and the Anita Mui Yim Fong statue was moved to its new location, next to it was the Andy Lau Tak Wa calligraphy plaque "Hong Kong Daughter Mui Yim Fong" for tourists and Mui fans to take photos with. Around 30 Mui Nation directors and fans two nights ago presented flowers and sang at their idol's statue with the film DEAREST ANITA...'s director Pako Leung Pak Ho, actor Paris Wong Wing Kit and Yuki Fong Wai Ying. They even sang WOMAN OF SONG to salute her. Leung Pak Ho at first praised Sister Mui's statue location for having the Victoria Harbor scenery behind it, later he realized that the public restroom was directly across from it. He said, "The arrangement is a little special, imperfect. (Did the government arrangement not pay enough attention to details?) I don't know how the authority handled it, but overall it's OK, with the flowing water design like her song YEARS FLOW LIKE WATER. Originally I wanted to use the song for the movie theme song, but due to copyright issue and another film's previous usage I changed her mind. I hope to have a chance to make movies about Sister Mui, express different sides of her. Aside from how amazing her on stage singing and dancing were, she also cared about the community and loved her fans. Through real stories Mui Fans would be able to learn more about their idol; unfortunately it would require timing, location and finding investors to happen." Once Wong Wing Kit found out about the role he immediately went back to enjoy all of Sister Mui's movies and songs. The most memorable was the film THE HEROIC TRIO (DONG FONG SAM HUP), he watched it like crazy for at least 10 times. The 25 years old Fong Wai Ying did not know much about Sister Mui but after taking part in the film she had more knowledge about Sister Mui and her true nature. * (2019/02/02) The Lunar New Year I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE! (NEI MAI LEI, NGOR OI NEI!) two nights ago held a charity premiere. Wong Cho Lam, Teresa Mo Shun Kwan, Timmy Hung Tin Ming, Korean star Melody Park So-yeon attended. Returning to Korea soon, Park So-yeon even greeted everyone Happy New Year in advance and gave away lai see. Cho Lam revealed that he went undercover to cinemas in various districts to see reactions and was happy to the enthusiastic response. In particular women liked to watch Mo Shun Kwan's acting. He even suggested that Sister Mo would be able to challenge Best Actress in the musical role for the first time. As for the film's official release, director Wong Cho Lam admitted that he was very nervous. He went undercover morning, noon and night to cinemas at various districts to see the reaction. "After seeing the overwhelming response I immediately had confidence. Actually Hong Kong people can accept Cantonese musicals. Viewers praised the movie as very cute, ladies especially liked to watch Mo Shun Kwan act. They praised her as funny and touching." Did Sister Mo caught attention because of her 50F bust in the film? Cho Lam said, "Men of course look at figures, women watch acting." Sister Mo said that her family already saw the film at the premiere and said that no matter what role she played her daughter would praised it as great. Her husband was known for being picky, but he praised the performance of one scene as decent. Cho Lam even suggested for Sister Mo to challenge Best Actress with her first musical character. "I feel Sister Mo can blaze the trail, many said to me that they saw joy, anger, sorrow and happiness on her. Her acting completely had dimensions, she even had to sing and dance." Sister Mo dared not think much about challenging for Best Actress. Instead she would rather have a raise. Because she and Cho Lam often would meet and chat, she would not eliminate the opportunity of working together again. In addition, Cho Lam's wife Leanne Li Yanan earlier said that she did not want to have another baby. He denied that. "She isn't going to stop, she just wants to wait for recovery. After a year she will be able to. She likes children very much herself." Timmy Hung Tin Ming said that Papa Sammo Hung Kam Bo has always wanted a granddaughter, as he has been rushing him since before his older son was born. Tin Ming said, "Of course having a daughter would be good, but now having two children is already very tough. Because I am often not in Hong Kong, the scheduling is pretty tough. I don't know to neglect her after her birth, I also have to see if the Old Lady want to have another." Tin Ming hoped that his brothers would get married soon and lighten his burden. He also said that he would consider using advanced technology to have a daughter. "Now technology is so advanced that the gender can be chosen. A friend got a surrogate mother overseas, but the Old Lady worried about the surrogate mother's diet and health. In addition legally Hong Kong still has not accepted surrogate birth, so I have to see if the Old Lady would be willing or not. If healthy and she can take it then we might try again in a year or two." * (2019/02/02) Famous Hong Kong actor Jackie Chan, Mainland new comer Elane Zhong Chuxi and Taiwan actor Ethan Juan (Yuen King Tin) starred THE KNIGHT OF SHADOW: BETWEEN YIN AND YANG (SUN TAM PU CHUNG LING) will be the only Spring Festival family film and open on February 5th, the Lunar New Year's Day, in Hong Kong simultaneously. The film mainly was a fantasy story about the Jackie Chan played Pu Chung Ling during a demon hunting case running into the star crossed couple of the Zhong Chuxi played Nip Siu Sin and the Yuen King Tin played Yin Chet Ha. Zhong Chuxi in the film would challenge the classic character Nip Siu Sin. In the official poster she wore a red dress with sharp make up. The extreme red even the beauty and the dominance stand out. According to the director, the Zhong Chuxi version would be different from its predecessors. This would be an all new character, and the Zhong Chuxi version was a brave and independent woman who dared to love and hate, willing to sacrifice herself for love. Was playing a classic character be stressful? Zhong Chuxi admitted, "Being able to participate in this film and played such a classic character to me was fulfilling Hong Kong film nostalgia. Ms. (Joey) Wang Cho Yin not only left an irreplaceable classic in everyone's hearts, but also a Nip Siu Sin that no one could surpass in my hearts. Thus stress of course was inevitable. Because the overall story and the character setting changed a lot, when I truly got into this character I only wanted to show the audience a different Nip Siu Sin. Naturally I became more relaxed." Speaking of working with Big Brother Jackie Chan for the first time, Zhong Chuxi said that she benefit a lot. "Big Brother Jackie Chan's work ethics and professionalism won people over, privately he was a easygoing elder with the entire team. This time I was honored to have taken part in THE KNIGHT OF SHADOW: BETWEEN YIN AND YANG, and to be able to work with so many excellent elders and team, to me it was an invaluable learning experience." * (2019/02/02) DaDa Chan Jing, Tsui Tin Yau, Hanjin Tan (Chan Woon Yan) and Susan Shaw Yam Yam two nights ago attended the UA Amoy opening ceremony and the MISSBEHAVIOR (GUNG HEI BAK POR) Lunar New Year show. DaDa even became the target of the director and Chan Woon Yan's pranks, completely oblivious to the two sticking many film stickers on her back. DaDa said that during the New Year she had to full promote the film and attend audience appreciation events, thus she could not take time off. "Originally every New Year I would return to Shanghai to visit family. This year I probably won't go until after the New Year. During this period I have to work hard on promoting the film." She also revealed that after the event she and Sister Yam Yam would visit 5 cinemas for audience appreciation events. At the ones she went to earlier she saw great reaction from the audience. She was not afraid of how difficult they might be, as an actor she should do something for the movie. Was she worried about the box office being thinned out due to numerous Lunar New Year film releases at the same time? DaDa said, "A full bloom is something joyous. Of course I hope my movie would win out. Actually having so many movies is good for the audience. I will watch all the Lunar New Year films in disguise." She also revealed that she gained ten pounds. At first she gained weight for the movie, but she would wait until after the Lunar New Year to lose weight. Tsui Tin Yau said that he just return from the U.S. Aside from keeping his wife company while she worked, he also attended a NBA game. He said, "Two months before I went I already bought tickets to see the Lakers. I wanted to see LeBron James the most, unfortunately he was injured and didn't play. He only sat on the sidelines and watched. I was a little disappointed, I hope next time I would have the chance to see him play." * (2019/02/02) The film NEW KING OF COMEDY (SUN HEI KET JI WONG) yesterday released its "AN EXTRA PREPARES" special. In it Wang Baoqiang, Vin E Jingwen, Zhang Quandan and others suffered torture and pain for their movie. The effort they contributed carried director Stephen Chow Sing Chi's "Work Hard! Struggle!" slogan. If you want to be in a Chow Sing Chi movie, how can you not give 120% effort? NEW KING OF COMEDY's "extra team" suffered pain of the flesh even when making a joyous comedy. Lead actress E Jingwen said that during the shoot she took a beating everyday. She said, "If one day I wouldn't get a beatng, I would be very happy." In the film Wang Baoqiang directly stepped on her head. When she played a witch three strong thugs directly struck her with various weapons. In an icy cold pool, hanging upside down in the air, and riding the electric bicycle in the rain were all very brutal scenes. She added, "Once after falling I felt a little concussed." Aside from the lead actress, Wang Baoqiang was not spared either. In the film he had a face full of black mud in a military uniform. In fron of Chow Sing Chi, even the already famous Wang Baoqiang did not slack off at all. He said that working with director Chow Sing Chi was a rare opportunity. "Begin anew, start anew, find myself anew." * (2019/02/01) Tian Niu and Susan Shaw Yam Yam worked together on the Lunar New Year film A LIFETIME TREASURE (YU JU YU BO). Two nights ago they along with the director and the boss went to the movie for audience appreciation; friend Chin Siu Ho brought his parents and son Andrew Pong Kingfung. Tian Niu's daughter Chu Yu Fung was her manager. The mother and daughter relationship was rather good. During photos they often had cohesion. Tian Niu took a few days to promote the film in Hong Kong for a few days. Yesterday she rushed back to Beijing for a series. She said, "After coming back to Hong Kong I attended the premiere, audience appreciation, media interviews. The production didn't feel tough, the promotion is much worse! My era didn't have audience appreciation, but now we would interact with the audience. I was happy to hear the live reaction, it's like experiencing the applause directly at concerts." She wanted to make more Hong Kong film but did not dare to challenge the self proclaimed "Hong Kong audience appreciation queen" Shaw Yam Yam, who attended 400 shows in a year. Tian Niu said that she already felt tired from 10 shows a day. Tian Niu would take 15 days off from the Lunar New Year's Day on and planned to spend the holiday with his mother and daughter as well as resting up properly. In recent years she mostly worked on Mainland films and series. At age 61 she stated that she had no plan to retire. Luckily many viewers still remembered and loved her. She said that she wanted to make Hong Kong films and series, but she joked that her Cantonese did not improve at all over the years. For example in her new film she had a line "dance an old dance" that sounded like foul language. She suspected that director Andrew Lam Man Chung deliberately played a trick on her. * (2019/02/01) The 52 year old Amy Yip Chi Mei has been out of show business for years and living with her back doctor boyfriend of 26 years. Yesterday rumors claimed that Dr. Lui Shek Chiu passed away from a heart attack while on a flight to the U.S. in November last year. Lui Shek Chiu's Causeway Bay medical office is in the hands of his son from a previous marriage Lui Ho Yin. Lui Ho Yin confirmed that his father's passing. Yip Chi Mei was originally named Yip So Kwan, an erotic star of the 80s with an outstanding 36F figure. In 1985 she graduated from the ATV 3rd training class and made many series since then. In 1988 she made the switch to film and many sexy performance, including the classic SEX AND ZEN (YUK PO TUEN ji TAU CHING BO GAM). However she kept her no nudity principle, sayng that she would save it for her future husband. A film company offered HK$ 8 million for a topless performance but she declined. Rumors also claimed that when she made ROBOTRIX she insured her breasts for HK$ 2 million. However afer meeting Lui Shek Chiu in 1992, she retreated from her daring ways. After making UNDERGROUND JUDGEMENT in 1994 she retired from film and made the switch to business. In 1996 Yip Chi Mei and Lui Shek Chiu almost broke up but made up. Returning to a quiet life, Yip Chi Mei was often caught walking her dog without make up and out with her boyfriend. She was rumored to have registered marriage with Lui Shek Chiu as well as pregnant. In 2003 Yip Chi Mei personally said to the media that she was not married and had no plan to, she also had no daughter. Next year she was rumored to be thinking about a comeback, which she denied as she said she had no interest in returning. Two years ago Yip Chi Mei and Lui Shek Chiu was caught on a date on the street like an old couple. * (2019/02/01) The Alan Mak Siu Fai directed, Felix Chong Man Keung and Wong Bun produced film INTEGRITY (LIM JING FUNG WON YIN MOK) two nights ago held its premiere at the Kowloon Bay International Trade and Exhibition Center. Actors Sean Lau Ching Wan, Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Karena Lam Ka Yun, Alex Fong Chung Shun, Anita Yuen Wing Yi, Hugo Ng Toi Yung, Kathy Yuen (Tong Yi) attended. Speaking of Ka Fai and Ka Yun shooting on location in Australia for a month, Ka Yun stated that she was very happy. However Ka Fai was envious of Ching Wan. He and Ching Wan both felt that staying at a hotel was quite a bother because they would have to get used to each hotel's room designs. Ka Fai even had no idea how to turn on the bathroom tap once. On the stage a lion eye dotting ceremony took place. Hacken Lee Hak Kun performed the film theme song. He said that earlier due to illness he still was not able to speak. He was worried about singing this song for three days. Dayo Wong Tze Wah, Kenny Kwan Chi Bun, Sherman Chung Shu Man and Tong Yi's old flame Ken Hung Cheuk Lap attended. Guest star Len Len said that aside from the script she also took the role because she would be able to work with Ching Wan again. Because they have no worked together in 26 years she wanted to see how he turned out. However he still did not like to speak. "Despite working together on so many films, we spoke less than ten sentences privately. Those tens were still 'did you eat?' 'I did'." Len Len admitted that if she would not be mainly working opposite Ching Wan, she absolutely would not guest star aside from mentors Peter Chan Ho Sun, Eric Tsang Chi Wai and Derek Yee Tung Sing's movies. Alan Mak Siu Fai was a good "cousin" but they were not close and have not seen each other for a very long time. Thus when he asked her to guest star, she first asked about the character's potential. When she thought the character was interested and she would work with Ching Wan she agreed. Working with Ching Wan after 26 years, Len Len said that it still felt like it was yesterday and they were still very young. "Although Ching Wan didn't like to speak, he became more mature and stable, very manly. This time the guest role isn't enough, if next time we would have more lines it would be better. I look forward very much to playing a couple with Ching Wan again." Ching Wan, Ka Fai and Lam Ka Yun spoke to the press together. Did Ka Fai and Ka Yun have a lot of fun while working in Australia for a month? Ka Yun stated that it was a lot of fun, but Ka Fai was envious of Ching Wan for getting to work in Hong Kong. "I was envious that he was able to go home after work. Did you think it was fun for me to live out there for a month? Of course sleeping in my bed would be better." Ka Fai revealed that for the skiing scene he constantly fell because he did not know how to ski. He even broke the zipper on his pants and lost his phone in the snow. Luckily someone found it and sent it to his hotel. He said, "It was still found after being buried in the snow, truly anything can happen." Ka Yun said that she had many action scenes. She had to chase and fight Ka Fai, but he very gladly took her abuse. Speaking of Mak Siu Fai's sequel plan, they said that if the director had roles for them and time would permit then they would return. Would Ching Wan ask to shoot overseas for the sequel? Ching Wan said, " Staying at the hotel is quite a bother. This time on the Mainland promotional tour, we were at a different hotel every night and had to adjust to each room's light switch and taps." Ka Fai agreed. "I realized that the hotel's new designs got their joy from you unable to use them. Once I didn't know how to turn on the bathroom tap, I couldn't take a shower." Ching Wan also revealed that sometimes he would not be able to sleep in a strange room, so he could only play the light switches. Ka Yun did not have this problem because she fell asleep as soon as she put on her eye mask. Ka Yun joked, "Just like a race horse?" Ka Fai's daughter earlier turned 13. He said that they celebrated with dinner and cake. Tong Yi was in the same unit as Ching Wan. She admitted that at first she was very afraid of Ching Wan because she thought he was very cool. The first time they had a scene together she couldn't rehearse at all. Ching Wan then said to her, "Slow down a little, you don't have to be so nervous. I don't eat people. Then I relaxed a little. Rehearsal was fine, but at the shoot I was already stunned. (Ching Wan's presence was too strong?) Very sharp, I didn't dare to have too many bad takes. I have been in the business for ten years, I can't be so scared." In order to overcome her fear, she took the initiative to talk to Ching Wan and talked about running. He also shared his own production experience and said that she just started and had a long way to go. He told her to slow down. "When he was my age he had the most work." * (2019/01/31) The Andrew Lam Man Chung directed Lunar New Year film A LIFETIME TREASURE (YU JU YU BO) two nights ago held its premiere. Sammo Hung Kam Bo, Tian Niu, Louis Cheung Kai Chung, Richard Ng Yiu Hon and Carl Ng Ka Lung attended. Big Brother Sammo admitted that he was very happy to be able to star with a group of old friends. Tian Niu joked that originally she was having a lot of fun, but she was the most upset about Lam Man Chung making her look very fat. During the audience appreciation events the audience was shocked to see how thin she really was, which made her want to retire. Big Brother revealed that during the New Spring holiday he would take his grandchildren on vacation. He said that he wanted Tin Ming (Timmy Hung) to give him a granddaughter. He still had two sons and a daughter and hoped that they would start a family and give him 3 grandchildren each. Big Brother said, "I am traditional and love a big family, but I won't raise them. I would just check in!" Then did he rush his children? Big Brother said, "I don't dare to, as I am afraid that the more I say the slower they get!" Tian Niu said that she would return to Taiwan to hug her "Lifetime Treasure" Mama. Because she has not spent a Lunar New Year in Taiwan in over 20 years, she looked forward to it very much. An ailing Ng Yiu Hon two nights ago attended the premiere. He revealed that due to chronic kidney disease he had an operation to "wash his belly" (peritoneal dialysis), adding a tube to the kidney to help with toxin cleansing. Now he was not used to the tube moving around in his gut. Ng Yiu Hon revealed that two days ago he just removed the stitches and clean the wound. After two weeks his dialysis will begin, four times a day and a hour each time. Currently both his kidneys were only left with 1/10 of their ability to function. He helplessly said, "At my age I can't accept kidney transplant. Dialysis is the safest and easiest way." However he insisted on returning to work after several weeks of rest, but each day he could work only 6 hours at most. Mainly he had to have dialysis on schedule and he did not want work to affect his health. His son Ng Ka Lung said that the entire family is worried about Papa's health and promised that he would properly take care of him. If Papa would want to work, he joked that everyone would have to make Papa more first. * (2019/01/31) Wong Cho Lam's directing debut, the Lunar New Year film I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE! (NEI MAI LEI, NGOR OI NEI!) two nights ago held its premiere. Cho Lam and film producer Elaine Lok Yi Ling led actors Teresa Mo Shun Kwan, Eliza Sam Lai Heung, Alex Fong Lik Sun, Ivana Wong Yuen Chi, Candy Yu On On, Christine Kuo, James Ng Yip Kwan, Louis Yuen Siu Cheung, Michael Ning (Bak Ji) and guest star Melody Park So-yeon in attendance. Leanne Li Yanan who gave birth to Cho Lam's daughter Gabrielle at the end of last month also showed her support for her husband. Would Cho Lam arrange for Yanan to perform next time? Cho Lam said that next time she might have another one and another scheduling conflict, seemingly he really wanted to have another! Former member of the Korean group T-ara, Park So-yeon greeted everyone on the stage in Cantonese, "How are you? I am very honored to be able to work with Cho Lam, very honored to be able to come to Hong Kong and work with Wong Cho Lam on this movie. I hope everyone would like my performance, and support the movie more, thank you everyone." First time in a Hong Kong film, So-yeon said that she felt Hong Kong film production's pace was quicker. Because this time was a guest starring role, she hoped to officially work on a movie next time. Cho Lam and Yanan spoke to the press together and Cho Lam immediately told his wife to suck in her gut. Yanan said, "I am, but I still have a belly. I just (gave birth) over a month ago." Cho Lam said, "It doesn't mater, you are just as pretty." Having already seen the film, Yanan was asked about her husband's directing debut. She had nothing but praise. "Truly nothing but praise, he is full of talent, very cool, all his aura radiated! I am very proud of him." She also said that Cho Lam took her to see this play when they just met. She even went with him to New York to negotiate its rights, she truly was touched when she witnessed his dream came true. Why did Cho Lam not arrange for Yanan to perform this time? He said, "At the time Yanan was pregnant, later she had the baby, being able to successfully give birth to our daughter Gabrielle was the most important. The most important was to keep the baby safe. I didn't even permit her to visit the set, since I was afraid of the dangers there. (Would you next time?) Next time we might have another one, another scheduling conflict." Yanan joked, "Then I am not having another, just joking." Sister Mo in the film played 4 characters with 7 different costumes. Even her husband could not recognize her. "The funniest was after the trailer was released, my husband asked why I wasn't in it? Actually he didn't recognize me! Because the hairstyle and performance style were all different." Speaking of the most memorable look, Sister Mo said that the 50F bust look was quite a heavy burden. She also had to sing and dance in it, which gave her back pain as she struggled through the scene. Although she has sung in movies before, this was a musical and she had to seriously sing. Thus it was an enormous challenge. The over 6 months pregnant Heung Heung revealed that in the film she had a dance scene in the film, but before the shoot she did not tell her husband. She believed that her would be able to accept it. She also revealed that at the early stage of the shoot she was already pregnant, but she did not realize until by the end of it. She was already a little fat and the photographer asked if she could reduce her belly. At the time she could only say she would try her best. Would she return to Canada for the birth? She said that she still has not decided yet, but more likely she would give birth in Hong Kong. However she still has not booked a bed and knew that she needed to do it as soon as possible. Thus she was a little stressed. Heung Heung said, "I did some research, if possible I would like a natural birth. It's not because I am brave, but because I am afraid of surgery and blood. A natural birth won't be as terrifying. (Would your husband go to the delivery room and cut the umbilical cord?) Probably, my husband is not as afraid of blood as I am. I have to close my eyes even during a blood draw and hold on to something hard. During the birth he probably would be in pain with me, only his arm would hurt." * (2019/01/31) The Avenue of Stars in Tsim Shui Sha reopened after renovation. Yesterday at the unveiling, five Hong Kong Film Award Best Actresses Carol Cheng Yui Ling, Sandra Ng Kwan Yu, Teresa Mo Shun Kwan, Helena Law Lan and Cecilia Yip Tung were invited to a hand printing ceremony and thus honored at the Avenue of Stars. Kwan Yu said that Sister Mo just asked her where she would be in the future, so she urged all the organizers to remember to tell them. Sister Mo joked that she was afraid of being next to Kwan Yu, only then did Kwan Yu explain that she meant the position of their "handprints". Sister Do admitted that yesterday had special meaning because she has worked with all the Best Actresses. Kwan Yu was also very touched to be able to join this hand print family and honored to be able to participate in Hong Kong film's most beautiful era. She said, "I felt that today's hand printing is just signing the yearbook at graduation, next to the handprint would be some well wishes. Even I got goose bumps!" She also sentimentally said that sometimes in the middle of the night she would watch some old Hong Kong films. When she saw familiar faces and actors she has worked with, she would get teary eyed. Sister Do also felt honored to take part. "Looking back, making movies was really tough. So I hope Hong Kong film would continue its glorious era!" Kwan Yu in recent years has helped new comers and encouraged more support for New Wave directors because she felt like she was one of them. Sister Do asked was she? Kwan Yu said, "Are you kidding?" Kwan Yu revealed that she was planning to make a movie and used the excuse to invite Sister Do to "come back" in support. Unfortunately each time when she wanted to ask Sister Do to guest star, she would knock her out in less than 3 seconds. Sister Do this time said that she would see how Kwan Yu would do with this movie before deciding. Kwan Yu immediately said that she just watched THE TOP BET (DOH BA) again and praised Sister Do's great acting. It would truly be regrettable if she did not return to film. Sister Do said, "I remember that movie, thank you for your support. Yet you are so free to watch it, don't you sleep at night?" Did Sister Do rarely watch old films? She sated that she loved new stuff. Kwan Yu also said that Sister Do would be in bed by 9PM while she would not go until 1AM. Thus she had time to watch old movies. She joked, "OK, it's time for Sister Do to go home and sleep!" * (2019/01/31) Sean Lau Ching Wan, Nick Cheung Ka Fai and Karena Lam Ka Yun yesterday promoted their Lunar New Year film INTEGRITY (LIM JING FUNG WON YIN MOK) at the Victoria Park Lunar New Year Market. Ching Wan and Ka Fai actually visited the Victoria Park New Year Market for the first time because they lived in Kowloon when they were little. Ching Wan said that when he was little and went to the New Year Market with his father, he loved to buy toys, plastic figures and fresh flowers. In recent years he would visit New Year Markets with his wife Amy Kwok Oi Ming, but they would choose to go in the afternoon when they would have less traffic. They used to buy peach blossoms but now they would not. Did they have too much luck? He denied, "No, we have no room at home." Ka Fai said that in his teens he would visit the New Year Market, mainly to eat fish balls and pork rinds. Ka Yun used to go to Causeway Bay, but she has not gone to the Market in a decade or so. She also has not taken her daughters either. Last night the trio after the film premiere would have to promote in Suzhou. Ka Fai complained, "It's been tougher than making a movie. A movie only have a dozen or so units, but the promotion has 20 to 30 units." Would INTEGRITY's serious subject differentiate it from other Lunar New Year films? Ka Fai said, "That's why it's great, it shows individuality and culture when you watch a serious movie for the Lunar New Year. You don't have to be funny, red, Kung Hei Fa Choi, although they would be in season; having a serious movie is a good choice. (Would you support other Lunar New Year films?) If time permits I would, let's see which one has tickets." Ka Fai also said that he would take his wife and daughter to the movies, maybe in disguise to see the audience response. Ching Wan also said that he would go with his wife. Ka Yun was the happiest because she could finally take her daughters to the movies. "I haven't tried it before because I was afraid that they would have heartaches from watching my crying scenes, screaming Mommy at the movies." Were they confident that they would be the Lunar New Year film box office champion? Ka Fai and Ching Wan both said that they were. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. TA KUNG PAO, JANUARY 31 2019, EAST AND WEST FILM AN ELEPHANT SITTING STILL: TELLING A STORY WITH LONG TAKE The four hour long AN ELEPHANT SITTING STILL made its international premiere at the Berlin Film Festival last year, unfortunately before that director Hu Bo has already ended his life at age 29. The film won two major awards at the Golden Horse Awards at the end of the year, including Best Film. After screening at several domestic film festival AN ELEPHANT SITTING STILL became a critical and commercial hit, and even received local distribution as in recent days it had a limited run in Hong Kong. - LAU WAI LAM The story took place in an old district. Four protagonists of different ages lived in this district. Young man Yu Cheng was having an affair with his friend's wife. When his friend found out he killed himself on the spot. Old man Wang Jin lived with his son, daughter in law and granddaughter, but his son for his own and his child's future wanted to move to a better district. Wang Jin thus had to stay in a nursing home. Young woman Huang Ling, a high school student, lived with her mother but their relationship was poor. Huang Ling found emotional support from a middle aged man, but something would make the secret public. Young man Wei Bu, Huang Ling's classmate, spoke up for his friend and crossed the class bully. An accidental push led to a big mistake as his future went up in smoke. Four hopeless people headed toward one destination, to see an elephant in Manchuaria. The film took place in just one day, first it told each person's story then brought them together. The reason for director Hu bo's suicide never had a confirmed answer. Reportedly he rejected the producer's request to cut the film down to two hours, but he had no way to raise the money and buy back the film. In the end he took the easy way out. Again, this theory has not been confirmed. What has been confirmed is the producer after Hu Bo's death, donated the rights of the film to Hu Bo's parents. Is it Worth Four Hours? Before going to seethe movie, the biggest question viewers would have is whether this film worth four hours? This writer has already passed the age of watching extra long films. Of course, after someone passed, most people agreed that this film could not be without one minute. Although many opinions have been heard that the film would be appropriate with a 3 hour cut. After watching it, my conclusion was that the film could be cut down to 3 hours. It could also as the producer wished be cut to two hours. The problem was such a cut would not make the movie even more "entertaining", the most the cut would do was making the movie less scary. Yet "four hours" would be a selling point too. Viewers who would be scared off by its four hour length mostly would not be able to accept a two hour short version (if it would be cut, the possibility of which would be beyond minuscule), because this film was not made for commercial film viewers. The main reason was that Hu Bo used a lot of long take to make this film. Some shots did not need to be completely cut or lose its beginning and end. Yet any cut in the middle would drastically reduce the attraction of this type of long take films. In the first hour, many long takes tended to be the "cold take" -- like two characters had nothing to say at the moment and would wait for awhile before saying the next thing. However by the second half of the film, more and more long takes connected a lot of what happened. The photographers even had to run up and down to shoot them. Near the end, when Wei Bu and Yu Cheng lay everything on the line, the scene indeed was thoughtful and difficult. Under Too Much Tarr's Influence Before making this film, Hu Bo under the guidance of Hungarian director Bela Tarr made a short film. After Hu Bo's death, Tarr also spoke on behalf of AN ELEPHANT SITTING STILL in hopes of more film viewer support. My biggest reservation of this film was Hu Bu being under too much influence of Tarr's long take aesthetics. This film's hopeless district was like many of Tarr's work, going to a "promised land" to escape the painful and hopeless reality was thoroughly Tarr. Yet Hu Bo's display the spirit and the face of a certain place and a certain generation in China could be completely said as lacking personal creativity. Speaking of the long take, those highly difficulty long takes in second half disappointed me the most in that they were too precise. For example when two people spoke then something had to happen, it was like it was scheduled to happen. The taste of control was too strong, very much like watching the pretended coincidence or accident in a play. As for the struggle between the director and the producer, I was very surprised that the producer (a famous director) seemed to have very little idea about how Hu Bo was making the movie. If he did he definitely would be able to expect that the film would be very, very long. Asking him to cut it after the film was done was too baffling. The similarities to Tarr, whether you would call it influence, dedication, imitation or infection, reflected in the past 20 years the film software development from DVD to download and streaming. It enabled viewers to come in contact with films around the world easier, including the extremely alternative ones. Some masters once watched and watched at French Film Archive in Paris and video rental store in the U.S., but even more famous directors of the past, especially the ones from politically and economically behind nations, could not be found at all. Hu Bo's example made me worry that the large amount of film traffic of the past twenty years might have killed creativity. Overall, AN ELEPHANT SITTING STILL was not hard to take. In comparison to many minimal cinema it was no big deal. This film's story and character texture was rich enough, absolutely not flimsy and propping up four hours. Most recently another four hour long film, for which the director had to fight for "no cut at all", was released again in Hong Kong: Edward Yang's A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY. Some friends compared the two. For me BRIGHTER's period depiction and visual concepts made the four hours very rich and kept it going. Simply said, four hours epics should be tried after cumulating certain experience. May the dead rest in peace. 2. TA KUNG PAO, JANUARY 31 2019, LIGHT SHADOW PATH FRIENDS BID FAREWELL TO RINGO LAM Director Ringo Lam Lan Tung's memorial committee (led by Johnnie To Kei Fung) last Saturday held a memorial for him. Almost 100 industry friends participated. Several of Lam Lan Tung's close friends shared details from his life. In the end everyone rose and sang the PRISON ON FIRE (GAM YUK FUNG WON) song LIGHT OF FRIENDSHIP and ended this gather with laughter in the shadow of tears. Around 30 years ago, this writer once witnessed Tsui Hark and Lam Lan Tung having fun in an elevator and thought how incredible it was that two great directors could behave like children. What Tsui Hark shared at the memorial solved the puzzle for me. Actually they met at TVB. The first time Tsui Hark went to see a director on a location shoot and ran into Lam Lan Tung on his first day as a director. Thus they became good friends. At the time Director Lam was only 21. They truly knew each other since they were young. Karl Maka said that Tsui Hark strongly recommended Lam Lan Tung as a director to Cinema City, almost guaranteeing certain success. After a few movies, Maka gave Director Lam free rein on any subject. Finally he made several classic "ON FIRE" films. When Lam Lan Tung started at the training class, according to his classmate Lo Hoi Pang Lam was very innocent and was nicknamed "Innocent Tung". He never expected that he would set the film industry on fire later. As Sylvia Chang said, Lam Lan Tung was a very real person, he was real to his friends. Even to people he disliked he was real without any disguise. This was Director Lam's principle. He once said in an interview, "I hope to make a movie that I can accept. The movie is mine, if I can't honestly say what is inside my heart then it's not me and it's not my movie." Director Lam Lan Tung indeed had an unique insight, as editor David M. Richardson recalled. In 2000 when he applied for the editor job he showed Director Lam movies that he edited. Lam criticized every shot mercilessly and David thought the job would be unlikely. Who knew that David would become Lam's editor. He asked the director why, Lam Lan Tung said that because David was able to put very poor elements together to tell a story. David said that "how to tell a story?" was something that the director would always say. Once Lam Lan Tung's assistant director, Soi Cheang Pou Soi pointed out that Director Lam could tell how confident a director was from watching a movie. He reminded him that voice dubbing was not just dubbing dialogue but playing that scene again. Even a veteran like Cheang Pou Soi felt that he benefit greatly. Sally Yeh (Yip Sin Man) found Lam Lan Tung's professional unforgettable. When they made CUPID ONE (OI SAN YAT HO) she was constantly seasick. While Director Lam was concerned with her condition he was also rushing the production. He ran back and forth like he had ants in his pants, which made her respect him. Lam Lan Tung was like that, just like he said about his attitude toward film, "Whole-heartedly, fully engaged. With all your emotions and all your nature." - TIN LIK 3. At the box office, GLASS remained in first place, the newly released Korean action film TAKE POINT came in second with almost HK$ 3 million difference; GREEN BOOK still firmly sat in third, the comedy INSTANT FAMILY came in fourth; in its sixth week in release AQUAMAN came in fifth. Opening in advance, the Herman Yau Lai To directed Lunar New Year film A HOME WITH A VIEW (GA WOR MAN SI GAING) made HK$ 810,000 in sixth place; the workplace comedy SECOND ACT made HK$ 470,000 in eighth place; the action film A PRIVAE WAR made HK$ 210,000 in seventeenth place; the Belgian comedy SINK OR SWIM made HK$ 49,000 in twenty ninth place; the Bi Gan directed A LONG JOURNEY INTO THE NIGHT made HK$ 32,000 in thirty second place, with advanced screenings it made HK$ 10,000; the crime film AMERICAN ANIMALS made HK$ 23,000 in thirty fifth place. In addition, family films HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD and MARY POPPINS RETURNS as well as the Japanese film MORI, THE ARTIST'S HABITAT will open. At the Mainland box office, DEADPOOL 2 opened at first place. This film opened in Hong Kong in May last year and made HK$ 55.25 million; the animated film WHITE SNAKE climbed up on spot to second. Seemingly as the New Spring nears, this type of family film would be affected; BUMBLEBEE came in third. This film in Hong Kong in its fifth week fell out of the top five last week to seventh place; the horror film ESCAPE ROOM firmly remained in fourth place; THE BIG SHOT came in fifth. Two films that opened the week before broke into the top ten, including the Lunar New Year film A HOME WITH A VIEW with 13.2 million RMB in eighth place. Opening January 31 2019 Trailer : https://youtu.be/qe_oUETtjTM [ BROADWAY CIRCUIT ] Morikazu Kumagai (aka Mori) was born in 1880 and became one of Japan's most celebrated 20th-century painters. His gift for painting was recognized very early on in his career but the opinions of critics and fame were never his priority. His sporadic output didn't result in sales. He didn't own a house and survived with friends' help until the age of 50 when his paintings began to sell and he could at last support his family. The Emperor was full of admiration for a Kumagai painting he saw at the prestigious Nika Art Exhibition. This brought recognition to Kumagai who was known as the "hermetic sage with a paintbrush" but Kumagai twice turned down the Emperor's Japanese order of Culture award. The reason he gave for declining these awards was that he was already receiving too many visitors. True to his reclusive nature, he barely left his 60-square-meter home for 30 years. He didn't have to because he observed animals and plants in his little garden. This movie is based on an actual account; it depicts one day in his twilight years when he never left home. Five up and coming Taiwanese directors each offer their own take in answering this question. In 2028, Taiwan is suffering from nuclear waste ("The Can of Anido"), migrant workers ("942"), industrial collapse ("Way Home"), low birth rates and diversity in families ("A Making-Of"), and insomnia ("The Sleep"). These destructive issues are the results of our present day. One man's old wounds return as environmental pollution disrupts societal relationships, blowing back as an attack on mankind. The film asks, how did things get this bad? And it asks once more, are these problems exclusive to Taiwan ten years from now? Of the five films, only "A Making Of" has a happy ending. The film is a part of the "10 Years" series being made throughout Asia. It began in 2015 in Hong Kong, and was followed by Ten Years Japan, Ten Years Thailand, and now, Ten Years Taiwan. Each director predicts a different "Taiwan in Ten Years", but every one of them is a summons for us in the present day. His latest, Burning (2018)—his first film in eight years—is an unsettling, puzzling psycho-thriller that has gained unanimous praise from critics and has topped numerous best-of lists. A celebrated literary figure in South Korea whose fiction earned him accolades well before his foray into cinema, Lee writes and directs harrowing tales that place his characters in extreme psychological and physical agony to test the limits of the human spirit. An elderly woman at the onset of Alzheimer’s confronts her grandchild's utter indifference to morality in Poetry (2010); a single mother endures a cascade of tragedies in Secret Sunshine (2007); a man suffers the forces of South Korea's tumultuous history in Peppermint Candy (1999). His tightly structured plotlines deliver unflinching exposés of pain, trauma, and rage. He appears to follow conventional genre tropes, from melodrama to noir and gangster flicks, only to subvert audience expectations with exceptionally complex stories that leave them to contemplate perplexing existential, spiritual, and moral questions. Lee was born in Daegu in 1954 to a leftist family. He hoped to become a painter at a young age but made a name for himself in the theater and literary worlds. He was almost 40 when he turned to filmmaking, beginning as a screenwriter and assistant director for Park Kwang-su, a key figure of the Korean New Wave of the late 1980s and 1990s. Between making Oasis (2002) and Secret Sunshine (2007), from 2003 to 2004, Lee served as South Korea’s Minister of Culture and Tourism. This retrospective includes all six films written and directed by Lee. Organized by La Frances Hui, Associate Curator, Department of Film. Special thanks to Lee Joon-dong, Now Film, Korean Film Archive, CJ Entertainment, Finecut Co.
