MISCELLANEOUS * (2019/01/23) Anthony Wong Chau Sun, Ron Ng Cheuk Hei, Susan Shaw Yam Yam, Ai Wai, Rachel Lam Hei Tung and director Lee Lik Chi yesterday attended the opening ceremony of the Malaysian artist Giselle Chew (Chow Won Bing) founded entertainment company, World Speed Notion. Malaysian royalty and nobles attended in support. Wong Chau Sun received Asia Pacific Brands Foundation (The World's Best Brands Icon) award. Wong Chau Sun was surprised to receive the honor. "I came to show my support, I never would have guessed that they would take it this far! How am I qualified to accept this award. Even I felt embarrassed when I heard, I wanted to find a hole to crawl into." Lately he has been lucky with awards. Earlier his film STILL HUMAN (LUN LOK YUN) won the Hong Kong Film Critic Society Best Actor. He happily said, "Winning one after another, that's good too!" He stated that he looked forward to the STILL release. He knew that many Filipino maids were talking about it. Did he become the "Filipino maid killer"? He said, "Many Filipinos recognize me." Would he work in Malaysia? Chau Sun said that few would dare to ask him to make a movie, as they were afraid that their movies would be banned. Yet when he guest starred in the Cheung Tat Ming produced film A HOME WITH A VIEW (GA WOR MAN SI GAING), it successfully passed the Mainland inspection for release. He suspected whether he was banned in the first place, or whether others were censoring themselves. "Many people were looking for a sucker, saying that I am not worth the money or that the Mainland wouldn't approve. They told me to guest star cheaply, but later the movie was approved. So I am not doing that anymore, I don't want to give people the chance to insult me." Chau Sun said that he was not as smart as Chapman To Man Chak, who was able to find a water hose (financing) for film productions. Yet on this trip he was fortunate to meet the Malaysian princess. Chau Sun said, "The Princess gave me her card, asking to call her and meet for dinner." He said that currently he was raising fund for a play in Hong Kong in July. As for the English play that he auditioned for, Chau Sun said, "I went to the audition just to test myself. All English dialogue is too hard." The Giselle Chew written, directed, starred romance YUT HEI JAU GOR DIK YUT JI (DAYS OF WALKING TOGETHER) named Ng Cheuk Hei as the lead actor. In March it will shoot on location in Hong Kong and Malaysia. She said, "Ng Cheuk Hei made a lot of TVB series and is very popular with the Malaysian audience. I have seen him in SHOCK WAVE." They were caught in an embrace on the streets earlier. Ng Cheuk Hei said, "We were shooting a teaser. The street had so many pedestrians, I wouldn't grab a girl out on the street." * (2019/01/23) Wong Cho Lam, Harriet Yang Sze Man, Joey Leung Cho Hiu yesterday promoted their Lunar New Year film I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE! (NEI MAI LEI, NGOR OI NEI!) First time director Cho Lam said that he was so nervous that he had a break out. With so many Lunar New Year films in competition, Cho Lam was not too worried because only his was a musical. It was different from other genres! Cho Lam said, "The film has over 60 actors and is a Lunar New Year film, it is so stressful that I have a break out. Although it faces several Lunar New Year films, only mine is a musical so I am not too worried. It will have crazy audience appreciation and box office push, just like my acne it will push whenever there is room. Haha." In the film Shrimp Head would have a provocative bed scene with Bob Lam Sing Bun. Shrimp Head joked, "I felt I had something to show off. I went to ask the director if it would be too sexy for this type of family film, he only said 'it's fine'. I just did it." Director Cho Lam joked, "I have always known Shrimp Had had something, so I wasn't surprised." Cho Hiu also revealed that in the film he would wear women's underwear and joked that the media has not covered it yet. In the film he and Sammi Cheng Sau Man played a couple. He felt that she was really funny. * (2019/01/22) The Steven Ma Chun Wai and Josephine Koo Me Wa starred play TILL WE MEET AGAIN (SUN CHIN YEUK SEI HAU) completed its 11 show run. Two nights ago a celebration took place. Ma Jai continued to call Mei Wa "Ma" and even praised her stage debut a great job, no wonder she was the presence goddess. However he did not have the confidence to keep performance. Because "real" tears after 11 shows have already dried, he even had a nosebleed. Ma Jai pointed out that he would focus his firepower on the film because at first when he wrote this script it was a film. He planned to start production in April for a November release; the cast would definitely include Koo Mei Wa and hoped to use the actors from this play and add a film newcomer. He even hoped that "Ma" would be able to win Best Actress again with the film, and he would have a New Director, screenplay and actor awards. Details will be discussed in days. His office will also be in full operation and he was invited in inviting "Ma" to participate in one of the comedy. * (2019/01/22) INTEGRITY (LIM JING MO FUNG YIN MOK)'s director Alan Mak Siu Fai earlier flew to Taiwan for a two day whirlwind promotional tour, many interviews and attend the screenwriter workshop forum to share his motivation for making this flm and behind the scene secrets. "Ching Wan may be taking real life emotions that he cannot release toward his wife and release them in the film!" Director Mak asked Sean Lau Ching Wan and Karena Lam Ka Yun to play a feuding couple that both worked at the ICAC. "This relationship is quite special. Ching Wan told me, 'I am willing to play this role because I feel like he is a very despicable person.' Actually the Ching Wan played King was very smart, very agile, but truly a little despicable. For example in his relationship with Lam Ka Yun he appeared to be very despicable. I jokingly said, Ching Wan might be releasing the emotions that he could not release toward his wife in real life in the film." Rarely guest starring, Best Actress Anita Yuen Wing Yi was willing to make a special performance. Director Mak unveiled a connection that few knew about between him and Len Len. "Yuen Wing Yi's father calls my mother cousin, Yuen Wing Yi can be considered my cousin. When she was little her personality was very different from it is now. When she was 7 or 8 she was very good to my mother and called her 'god mother'. When she came to my home at age 18, she suddenly became very pretty. Mama said, 'How can you not remember, when she was little she often fought with me!' I said, 'I didn't hit her, she was hitting me!' Actually at the time we were just playing, she wasn't really hitting!" Speaking of him and Len Len both entering the business, when he was the assistant director on the film THE GOLDEN GIRLS (SHAN SHUI YAU SEUNG FUNG) Len Len and Ching Wan were the leads. Mak Su Fai revealed that Len Len back then told him on the set, "If you smoke I will tell your Mommy; if you swear, I will also tell your Mommy!" Mak Siu Fai initially felt bad about inviting Len Len to play her role in INTEGRITY, but because of Ching Wan he thought of her. In addition she was very suitable to play this character. After three days she replied that she would perform. * (2019/01/21) Stephen Chow Sing Chi yesterday led the film THE NEW KING OF COMEDY's stars Wang Baoqiang, Vin E Jingwen, Huang Xiaopeng and others attended an event at the Chimelong Safari Park. Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi was the surprise guest as she presented a classic video from 20 years ago. Pak Chi revealed that this time she accepted Sing Yeh's invitation to provide her voice to the film. As the KING OF COMEDY golden team 20 years ago, their reunion made Mainland fans more than excited. Cheung Pak Chi at the urge of the audience reprise her "I will take care of you" classic scene from the film, but her co-star was Wang Baoqiang instead. Pak Chi also played the Wan Tin Sau role while Wang Baoqiang played Lau Piu Piu. One used Cantonese and the other used the Henan dialect. Speaking of focusing on small characters for his comedy creation, Chow Sing Chi said that he originally was a minor player. This time the leads and many new actors all were small figures who were extras. He even revealed that on the set he discovered a lighting technician, who would appear as a "small figure" in the film. Reportedly, in the NEW KING OF COMEDY the leads would have rather perfect ending. Sing Yeh responded that because he felt it would more directly encourage everyone, he showed viewers that no one would always be an extra in life. 20 years ago, viewers did not seen the "sunrise" with Wan Tin Sau; but 20 years later, everyone would be able to see it. After the sunrise it really would be very beautiful. The appearance of lead actress E Jingwen did not bring the audience the beauty and the presence that a "new" female actress should have. In comparison to many "Sing Girls" before, the lead actress' looks according to views, felt very pedestrian. Then how could she become the new "Sing Girl", and in the trailer was she playing the "Lau Piu Piu" role? The audience were curious. However, E Jingwen did not reveal why she was so lucky. She only said that just her character name Yu Meng, to be able to star in Sing Yeh's new film was just like a dream. When many fans put E Jingwen into the Lau Piu Piu role and felt the difference. Sing Yeh said that after watching the film they would understand. If he had to spoil something, then E Jingwen would probably be "Wan Tin Sau". In addition, THE NEW KING OF COMEDY shot over two months. The news of the production surprised many viewers. Soon after the film's Lunar New Year's Day opening was announced. Lately, as the film released trailers continuously, many Chow Sing Chi's "old film" ideas could be found in the new film. Thus the concern and the discussions of "Chow Sing Chi is out of ideas" returned. Sing Yeh admitted that in the past few years with the release of each new film, he had to be "out of ideas" once. Then, Sing Yeh said, he could still work harder to give the audience something different. The new film's theme song GALE revealed the same message and visuals. Sing Yeh said, Danny Chan Pak Keung's GALE lyrics were enduring and well honed, which would be able to let the audience imagine small figures running with all they got completely. With the new film about to be released, Sing Yeh was fully involved in the promotional tour and spread "positive energy" to encourage everyone to become the king of comedy of their own lives. In addition, Ng Man Tat in a recent interview said that he and Sing Yeh were "old buddies who don't see each other anymore". Sing Yeh did not mind and even said that he would invite him to work together again. * (2019/01/21) Wong Cho Lam, Teresa Mo Shun Kwan and Corinna Chamberlain (Chan Ming Yan) yesterday promoted their Lunar New Year film I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE! (NEI MAI LEI, NGOR OI NEI) in Tuen Mun. They played games with the audience and talked about their memorable moments from the past years. Recently becoming a father, Cho Lam said that the most memorable was directing the Lunar New Year film and having a daughter. Both were new born babies that required his time to raise. Sister Mo said that the most memorable was winning the Hong Kong Film Award Best Actress. The ailing Sister Mo sounded hoarse. She said that she caught the flu from her daughter. Sister Mo said that in the film she would play four characters with seven costumes, one of them even had a 40F bust. Has her husband Au Ting Ping seen it? Sister Mo said, "Not yet, I want him to be surprised at the movies. (What kind of shape does your husband like you to be in?) Men of course want everything." Cho Lam was asked what kind of figure did he like his wife Leanne Li Yanan to have? He said, "My wife is perfect, even when pregnant." Just becoming a father, he said, "I tried everything, but I couldn't finish anything. I have to hand her back to the women of the home to finish up." Did he ask Sister Mo for advice? Sister Mo pointed out that Cho Lam's home had too many people to take care of the baby, she was not so lucky and reminded Cho Lam said that a couple would have friction when they have a baby. However friction is a part of life, only with it would they know how important each other was. Cho Lam said, "I already know that this family is very important, I don't need the friction." Cho Lam also stated that he wanted to two in three years, but he said that his wife wanted to wait until their daughter turns one before having another. She did not want to be pregnant while taking care of their daughter. Cho Lam said, "Being a mother is too noble, I have to love my wife even more." To reward his wife for having the baby and to celebrate their wedding anniversary on Valentine's Day, he planned to take his wife to Japan. He realized that nine out of ten women would want to eat raw and cold food after giving birth. Cho Lam revealed that he is planning his daughter's hundred day banquet. Earlier he originally wanted to order cookies from Sister Mo as gifts for family and friends but Sister Mo turned him down. Sister Mo explained that she was very busy at the time and she did not have time to complete Cho Lam's large order. Cho Lam said that he ended up buying boxes of finished cookies for friends and family. * (2019/01/20) In Andrew Lam Man Chung's directing debut, the Lunar New Year films A LIFETIME TREASURE (YU JU YU BO) he and Lam Suet played nemeses, but privately they were so close that they had no "bottom line"! When Ah Chung asked the 280 pound Lam Suet at costume fitting, Ah Chung made fun of his belly as he sang and danced to Aaron Kwok Fu Sing's ENDLESS LOVE FOR YOU. Lam Suet coordinated with Ah Sing's gestures, moved his body around and shook his rear for Ah Chung to capture on his phone. Ah Chung shot the video as he kept pulling up Lam Suet's shirt and pulling down his pants, as he said that he wanted to shoot his lower body; Lam Suet did not mind as he propped up his belly and said, "You can find it under here!" Then they told even more dirty jokes. Lam Suet was not mad from Ah Chung's pranks. He even spent almost HK$ 10,000 to treat the entire team of 80 people to squab. * (2019/01/20) Cheung Tat Ming, Elena Kong Mei Yi, Jocelyn Choi Chung Sze and others yesterday promoted their new film A HOME WITH A VIEW (GA WOR MAN SI GAING) as they split into teams to play tongue twister and Lunar New Year couplet games to celebrate the New Spring early with the audience. Earlier at the premiere, Dayo Wong Tze Wah showed his support for his friend Cheung Tat Ming and stated that if the film would make over HK$ 10 million they would reunite with Francis Ng Chun Yu for another stand up comedy show MEN'S SHOW 3. Tat Ming of course wanted to perform again, but the box office would be very hard to predict. He still had to hope that the audience and everyone would support the film. However he was very happy to work with Ng Chun Yu and Anita Yuen Wing Yi again because this team truly was very hard to come by. Tat Ming said, "The film is about what is happening in Hong Kong. It has the full gamut of emotions and can satisfy the comedy for myself. The script used to be a theater of the absurd, the film adaptation added a lot of comedy. I hope to make everyone laugh and also give a message for everyone to think about." Tat Ming did not dare to see the new film as a Lunar New Year film and did not arrange for its Mainland release. He only hoped for the audience to go and relax a little. The first time producer Tat Ming admitted that for someone who was once seriously ill, being able to work was already very rare. He said, "I of course hope to produce again. Earlier an American film company invited me to write a script. I already handed it in and got paid. If it goes into production I will be able to participate in choosing a director and actors. This is my dream for 2019, I hope it can come true." Kong Mei Yi remembered the scene in which she had to slap Yuen Wing Yi. "At first when Tat Ming asked me, I said fine no problem. However his condition was to slap someone, as I had to hit Len Len." Tat Ming joked that in all of Hong Kong only Kong Mei Yi could hit Len Len. Before the shoot he even asked Len Len who would she choose to slap her. Thus during the shoot they did not use displacement for the performance. He was the most worried about Len Len would use a swollen face as an excuse to go on strike. Kong Mei Yi said that privately she and Len Len were buddies. After years of acting she also learned to watch her strength, and she knew that the audience would praise the performance after watching. Did they have to test their marks many times before the shoot? Kong Mei Yi said, "Director (Herman) Yau Lai To is known for being fast with that. As soon as the cameras started rolling we were shooting. We only did a few takes, actually mainly to perform the reaction of the slap." * (2019/01/20) Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin yesterday attended an audience appreciation event for her film THE LADY IMPROPER (FEI FUN SHOOK NUI), played games and gave away chili oil to the audience. In the film Ah Sa had a daring bathtub scene. Ah Sa said that this scene borrowed a little from THE PIANO. She sat sideways purely for the aesthetic angle, which the director had her own as well. At first when she took the film she was under her influence a little. As for her pole dance scene, did she get into shape for it before hand? Ah Sa said, "Not deliberately, because in the film I played an ordinary person I completely neglected my own shape. However I practiced pole dancing for awhile and thought it was fun. (Did you have any bruises?) During the shoot my adrenaline went up alot, so I had no feeling. After the shoot I realized that my legs were all bruised, my toenails were all cracked and the pain from my fingers pierced my heart. Yet after the shoot I still wanted to keep learning. (To make things more interesting?) Don't think that way for everything, it is a sport. (Do you feel more feminine?) I understand myself more." Ah Sa also admitted that at first she did not dare to wear her costume. She went to her first class in gym sports, but she saw all her classmates were in dancewear and instead felt very awkward. In her dancewear Ah Sa did not have anything loose. Ah Sa taught an unique trick to everyone. "In the rear of the pants sew another old, then nothing would squeeze out. From now on when I would do the same with my swimsuits." Ah Sa was rumored to have vocal cord issues and had to stop singing. "This problem has already bothered me for several years, so I was forced to finish all my singing. The doctor said that I had to make a transition. Many people recommended doctors to me. It was from vocal fatigue. I would have to stop talking for several months. Maybe it is a revelation from Heaven." She could play mute roles. Ah Sa joked that she would have to learn sign language first. When asked about her relationship and marriage, she said that she was happy with the current condition. No on would know what happens in the next second and Heaven would tell her. Would she secretly wed? Ah Sa said, "No, after messing up once I want everyone's blessing. (Would you make a big deal like Ah Gil?) I haven't thought about it." * (2019/01/19) The Alan Mak Siu Fai written and directed new film, based on real events, INTEGRITY (LIM JING FUNG WON YIN MOK) invited Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Sean Lau Ching Wan and Karena Lam Ka Yun to star and "Len Len" Anita Yuen Wing Yi as a special guest star. After being an on screen couple for years, Ching Wan and Len Len have not worked together for a long time. Reuniting this time, Ching Wan said that he had the familiarity of seeing an ex girlfriend again as past memories flooded back. Mak Siu Fai adapted the screenplay from a HK$ 8.5 billion cigarette smuggling case from 1994 to 1995 and worked with Felix Chong Man Keung on the film INTEGRITY. Mak Siu Fai admitted that he has always wanted to work with Cheung Ka Fai but heard that Ka Fai was quite troublesome. This time he decided to ask Ka Fai and learned that he really was quite a bother. Mak Siu Fai joked, "He wasn't bothering you whether he has a private car at work, but he was serious about the script and asked a lot of questions. This is good. I also have encountered actors who didn't care about their characters at all, which gave you even more trouble during the shoot." The director even asked his cousin Yuen Wing Yi to guest star. Ching Wan joked that this time felt like seeing an ex again. He even watched their old film like C'EST LA VIE MON CHERI and brought back a lot of memories. Lam Ka Yun worked with Ching Wan for the first time and admitted that she was nervous and beyond stressed! She was also working for the first time with Ka Fai and Director Mak, in particular later on she sensed that the director knew a lot about drama and became even more nervous. Ka Yun described, "He seems to have a pair of X-ray eyes when he watches you act, he discovers all my conscious and unconscious arrangements. I become very nervous, even avoiding his eyes." Rarely in an action film, Ka Yun this time even had a car crash scene. She admitted, "The director lifted my car up high for another car to crash into me. Cameras were inside and outside the car. Before the shoot began, my breathing became very rapid. The sound engineer said that my fear didn't come from acting. I thought were you making fun of me or criticizing me? Later I listened to the recording and realized that I was holding my breath for courage. Then 'bang', it was really scary!" In the first trailer, a computer generated Cheung Ka Fai appeared in the final scene. It was one of the story's smoke screens. In the film Ching Wan and Ka Fai met in the university and thus they shot an university scene from 20 to 30 years. They thought about using young actors but their image might be too sharp for them to be convincing. The director did not want to ask them to wear wigs and use light to make them look younger. Finally he used computer special effects. Ching Wan joked, "Compared to the real me back then it was a little more handsome!" Ka Fai said, "I only heard that the director was pleased, so I looked forward to seeing how it turned out." * (2019/01/19) The Lunar New Year MISSBEHAVIOR (GUNG HEI BAK POR) yesterday released its production highlight. Patrick Tse Yin looked cool and bold with a cigar. In the film company interview, when asked if he was bullied on the set, Sei Gor said, "They are bullying me. I haven't made a movie in so many years. However they also taught me a lot." In addition, Lam Suet continued to open the video with foul language and completely satisfied people online. DaDa Chan Jing held the prop breast milk and joked that she needed "censor blocks" because it looked gross. Director Pang Ho Cheung joked that he wanted to play a drinking game with DaDa and the loser had to drink it. DaDa immediately left the set. In addition, the film company even issued a series of "anyone" photos and videos. In the film "anyone" was the three leads in the film Hanjin Tan (Chan Woon Yan), Tsui Tin Yau and Yanki Din (Ting Ho Yan). * (2019/01/19) Based on Cheung Tat Ming's award winning play, A HOME WITH A VIEW (GA WOR MAN SI GAING) two nights ago held a premiere. Francis Ng Chun Yu, Anita Yuen Wing Yi, Cheung Tat Ming, Ng Siu Hin, Jocelyn Choi Chung Sze, Lo Hoi Pang attended. Friends like Dayo Wong Tze Wah, Lau Siu Ming and Joe Ngai Chun showed their support. Speaking of many parents saving for their children's home, Len Len admitted that she was making preparation for her son. Chun Yu recalled that how his late father saved for a home for him, thus he felt children should not rely on their fathers. Wong Tze Wah made a flash appearance. With Tat Ming, Tze Wah and Chun Yu present, Tat Ming joked that if A HOME WITH A VIEW would make over HK$ 10 million at the box office they would perform MEN'S SHOW 3. The on screen couple Chun Yu and Len Len shared the joy of their production on the stage. Speaking of Len Len playing a "sassy housewife" she had many argument scenes at the market. She said that the character was not sassy. She was helping her husband save for a home so she cut what she could. Speaking of many parents now saving for a home for their children, Len Len admitted, "I made some preparation, but if he would be able to rely on his own effort it would be the best. I would help him appropriately when needed. If I would think of everything for him then he would be quite a waste!" Chun Yu also recalled how his late father saved up for a home for him. "I told him to sell it and take the money to go on vacation, because I wouldn't be satisfied with such a small unit. In the end he still didn't sell the place and passed away without enjoying life. Thus children should not rely on their fathers." Len Len originally had to lose weight then gain weight again for a performance. Yet the film production has been postponed so she stayed in her current shape. Len Len revealed that in two months she lost almost twenty pounds with exercise and nutritional meals. When she was the lightest she felt a little dry and unattractive, thus she gained a little back. When the film production would begin, the director mentioned that the thinner she was early on she would not have to be too fat later. She needed a 20 pound difference in between. She said, "I used to be happily fat, and I wasn't really fat!" Reporters joked that she was already happily fat in this life, she said, "Can't you say that I am happy in this life? I wasn't motivated to lose weight before, and no one thought I was fat. Now my husband (Julian Cheung Chi Lam) gives a lot of pressure. He never noticed that I was fat, but now when many people see us they would say your wife is much thinner. Then you would......" Was her husband afraid that she would have another after losing weight? She said that something like that would rarely happen to her. Would her husband love her a little more? She said, "He didn't say, only that when I am thinner I look better in pictures. However from my eyes, that stare, you can tell!" Chun Yu revealed that Tat Ming in the film performed with make up and joked that he added another "senior" to the film industry. However he picked him to be nominated for the Hong Kong Film Award Best Supporting Actor. The film has not been released yet, perhaps his good scenes would be cut out! Tat Ming said that his fight with Law Kar Ying and Louis Koo Tin Lok were all removed. Earlier when Cheung Chi Lam worked on Wong Kar Wai's film he was cut out in the end. "I'd better stop there, otherwise Len Len would hear and get mad!" This time HOME was adapted from Tat Ming's 1993 play. Chun Yu said that he read the original scrip many years. He felt that this time had some changes but was still a lot of fun. Tat Ming said that his junior colleagues performed the play before. This time he invited Len Len to oppose Ng Chun Yu, and for the two of them to oppose Koo Tin Lok. * (2019/01/19) Andy Lau Tak Wa originally planned to perform a 20 show year crossing concert series at the Hong Kong Coliseum, but due to the flu he cancelled the remaining shows. Wa Jai later applied for this year's year crossing dates for the end of this year, but yesterday Wa Jai through his official facebook announced that he was unable to apply for the December shows successfully and failed to book the make up shows! The organizer Focus Entertainment yesterday issued a statement. "Very regrettably we have already received the written notice from the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the December 2019 Hong Kong Coliseum booking applications have been rejected. The organizers hereby again apologize to the numerous viewers affected, and thank them for their forgiveness and understanding. The organizers will announce ticket refund policies on January 31st 2019 at the official social platform below." Wa Jai responded to the failure to make up the show. "Positively face the future, I look forward to seeing you on th stage next time." * (2019/01/18) Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin in THE LADY IMPROPER (FEI FUN SHOOK NUI) played a middle aged woman whose lack of sex life with her husband brought her to the brink of divorce. She ran into the Taiwan actor Wu Kang-Jen played chef and passion erupted. Their love scene happened in the kitchen. She admitted, "The scene was shot near the middle of the production. The entire film took a month, I got one day off but I spent it to test the marks for the shoot. The kitchen environment was very tight, very smelly. I even had to lie inside the metal freezer. It was icy cold. The crew helped me with taping up the important areas. Since they were all hard, I believe when he touched me he didn't feel anything! We weren't awkward at all because we just wanted to finish the shoot as soon as possible. We didn't want to suffer anymore!" Actually when Ah Sa first came in contact with LADY's script, she just finished SARA (CHOR GEI). She admitted that she once turned it away. "I didn't want to play a similar genre film in such a short time, in addition at first the director asked for nude scenes. In the Chinese world, I couldn't get over it. The director later spent a very long time to amend the script." The "finished production" remained daring conceptually. Would she let her boyfriend see the movie? She said, "He watches a lot of movies, and he grew up overseas. Why wouldn't he? (Did you ask him to attend the premiere?) No way, too many reporters. He can buy his own ticket!" Speaking of all the attention, she might receive a Hong Kong Film Award Best Actress nomination. Ah Sa humbly said, "I let that up to fate. I of course want to receive recognition where I grew up. (Would you announce marriage if you win?) No! How did you get that far? When I was little people around me wanted to win Miss Hong Kong, I wanted to be a good Hong Kong actor." * (2019/01/18) Andrew Lam Man Chung's directing debut, the Lunar New Year film A LIFETIME TREASURE (YU JU YU BO), invited Tian Niu to return to Hong Kong film after many years. Lam Man Chung and Tian Niu earlier spoke to Hong Kong Open TV and shared their production experience. Tian Niu has not made a Hong Kong film in over a decade. She thanked Lam Man Chung for giving her the chance to participate in film again. Lam Man Chung said, "I have been Sister Tian's fan since I was little, Sister Tian won Best Actress at age 19. This time I had the chance to watch Sister Tian's unique acting from the sideline." In this film he invited actors from the 80s when film was at its most glorious, like Sammo Hung Kam Bo, Lam Suet, Richard Ng Yiu Hon, Teddy Robin Kwan to work with a group of young actors and set off spark. A relative of Sister Tian passed away during the shoot. Despite her mixed emotions she still had to maintain her professionalism and continue the shoot. Sister Tian said, "I have experienced this twice, one was for Lam Man Chung's move and the other one was two years ago. Both happened to be comedies. At the time during the shoot laughing was very hard." She said that no matter how many times someone has won Best Actor or Actress, sorrow was inevitable under that situation. She thanked Lam Man Chung for being very protective of her during that time so she was able to focus on the movie. * (2019/01/17) Sammo Hung Kam Bo yesterday worked on the 43rd Hong Kong International Film Festival Filmmaker in Focus special cover shoot in Chai Wan. Big Brother even chose the poster of his favorite movie, the 1987 film EASTERN CONDOR, for the shoot. Earlier celebrating his 67th birthday, Big Brother felt that spending the birthday with the entire family was the most important. He joked that his birthday wish was to live to a thousand and long to have all five generations gather at once. After over half a century in film, Big Brother Hung Kam Bo made almost 250 films. Starting as a stunt man, he switched to action director and actor, then director and producer. He witnessed and created the Hong Kong film golden age, thus he was invited to be the 43rd Hong Kong International Film Festival Filmmaker in Focus. The Film Festival will take place between March 18th to April 1st. Ten of Big Brother Sammo's films have been selected for screenings, including THE VALIANT ONES (JUNG LIT TO), ENCOUNTERS OF THE SPOOKY KIND (GWAI DAI GWAI), THE PRODIGAL SON (BAI GA JAI), WINNERS AND SINNERS (KEI MAU MIU GAI NG FOOK SING), EASTER CONDOR (DONG FONG TUK YING), PAINTED FACES (CHUK SIU FOOK), PEDICAB DRIVER (KWUN LUNG HEI FUNG), EIGHT TAELS OF GOLD (BAK LEUNG GUM), SPL (SAT POR LONG) and IP MAN 2, as a salute to this film grandmaster and a retrospective of his glorious achievements. Big Brother Sammo will also attend the Hong Kong celebrity forum on March 30th at the Hong Kong Cultural Center to share his unique film perspective and experience. Big Brother Sammo said that this time he would help to promote this event with interviews and photo opportunities. He would also talk about a little film history, on this rare occasion for people to remember and not forget this elder. Among the ten selected films, which one was his favorite? Big Brother Sammo said that he liked every one. "If I didn't like it I wouldn't have made it. I feel the most representative was EASTERN CONDOR, it was special because no one in Hong Kong would make this time of incident. After making it I realized that Hong Kong people at the time was rather weak on their own country and race. Hong Kong ultimately grew up under British laws. I also have to praise Bruce Lee. After his appearance, Hong Kong people's awareness of their own race was much stronger." Speaking of Big Brother Sammo's film A LIFETIME TREASURE (YU JU YU BO)'s Lunar New Year release, he said that he would help with the promotion if time would permit. After the photo shoot he would have to return to Guiyang to make a movie and would not return until before the Lunar New Year. The entire family then would visit Japan. In the past few years the entire family have gone on vacation together, as he felt that nothing was more important than family. Was his son Timmy Hung Tin Ming treating everyone? Big Brother Sammo joked, "The son's old man will treat, we will eat as much as we can. The entire trip will have around ten people." Earlier Big Brother Sammo returned to Hong Kong to celebrate his 67th birthday. He said that he would not hold a birthday banquet now. The most important was to be with his family, for any occasion he would like to spend it with his family. He revealed that his older grandson gave him a wool hat and his younger grandson a big scarf, all of which were perfect for work. He said, "After all these years this time was the most useful, all the watches and cakes before were mostly their Dad's ideas. I was just as pleased though." Speaking of birthday wishes, Big Brother Sammo said that he hoped to live to a thousand. A hundred would not be enough because it will be here soon. "I try to live as long as I can, I would be very happy to see my grandchildren getting married. I would be even happier to see their children, as I hope to have all five generations in one place." * (2019/01/17) Stephen Chow Sing Chi's Lunar New Year film THE NEW KING OF COMEDY released the third version of its poster yesterday and at the same time its lead actress, Mainland actress Vin E Jingwen. She would play the female version of "Wan Tin Sau". Few would be familiar with this Mainland actress or even heard of her, E Jingwen was exactly the small figure who is chasing her dream as Sing Yeh described. When Sing Yeh said that he would have a new film release in the Lunar New Year, everyone was very concerned with its casting. The poster revealed the answer. Actually E Jingwen was an extra, her name has not even been in the end credits of films she has been in. She truly was a "extra". Thus when she go the assistant director's call and learned that she was chosen to be the lead actress of Sing Yeh's new film, she said, "The assistant director called three times, only when he showed me the text photo did I believe him. At the start I thought he was a fraud." Sing Yeh said at the film press conference, "Don't give up, believe in yourself, you are the King of Comedy in your own life." Seen as Sing Yeh's female version of "Wan Tin Sau", she felt, "My character Yu Mong has many similarities with me, like personality wise. She doesn't mind being made fun of or parodied, I am like this in life as well." Even the character's encounters and experience were very close. She said, "After graduation I kept struggling, never giving up, never changing jobs and finally I have this opportunity today." All the stories that E Jingwen had would probably be perfectly displayed in the real little figure's history of struggle in the upcoming NEW KING OF COMEDY. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. TA KUNG PAO, JANUARY 17 2019, THE WEEK IN FILM GLASS: EYE CATCHING OPENING In the second week of the New Year, last week's box office dropped to HK$ 22.76 million and made HK$ 20.69 million less than the previous week. Of course everyone could see this as a return to "normal". Without any special attraction blockbuster and holiday elements, in terms of the weekly average box office of last year -- HK$ 37.65 million, last week's box office number could be considered as "reasonable". At the box office, AQUAMAN and BUMBLEBEE were still in first and second. The Golden Globe Award Best Picture and Best Screenplay winner GREEN BOOK opened in third, RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET: WRECK-IT-RALPH 2 and MASTER Z: THE IP MAN LEGACY came in fourth and fifth. As for new releases, the Sylvester Stallone starred CREED II made HK$ 1.21 million in sixth place. This week five new films will open, the most eye catching will be the latest from Indian American director M. Night Shyamalan after SPLIT, his comeback film two years ago. He continues to work with James McAvoy in GLASS and elevate him to play ten characters. With help from Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson, GLASS will make quite a splash; in the Clint Eastwood directed and starred THE MULE, he plays a poor old man who unknowingly becomes a drug smuggling expert. The Mark Wahlberg starred comedy INSTANT FAMILY opened Christmas Eve in the U.S. and made US$ 66.69 million. Last year's 30,680,000,000 won hit in Korean, DEFAULT is about the financial crisis, starring Kim Hye-su and Yoo Ah-in as well as French actor Vincent Cassel as the International Monetary Fund chief. Zhang Yimou's film SHADOW stars Deng Cho and Sun Li. When it opened in September in the Mainland it made 626.21 million RMB. At the Mainland box office, BUMBLEBEE remained firmly entrenched in first place. The new crime film starring Wang Qianyuan and Bao Beier, THE BIG SHOT, came in second; the comedy KILL MOBILE came in third; the animated film WHITE SNACK opened in fourth; AQUAMAN fell on place to fifth. As for other new releases, the Japanese animation FATE/STAY NIGHT HEAVEN'S FEEL I, PRESAGE FLOWER made 24.68 million RMB. This film opened in January last year in Hong Kong and made HK$ 1.56 million. TA KUNG PAO, JANUARY 17 2019, LIGHT SHADOW PATH LOW BUDGET FILM DEMONSTRATION In recent years Chinese film production cost kept rising, a 100 million yuan budget would only be a medium sized production. Many investors suffered heavy losses, as many small companies even quit the film industry. Thus everyone hoped low budget productions would break the monotony, unfortunately success has not been easy. Industry insiders understood that there was no special "secret", the most important remained screenplay. The good and bad of a screenplay was not limited to just the story. The key was the storytelling technique. Earlier four small budget films did well and touched the hearts of the audience. MEN ON THE DRAGON (YIK LAU DAI SHOOK) was Chan Wing Sun's directing debut. Opening against the tide in the third season last year, it became a hit Hong Kong film mainly because it had laughter and tears as it told the middle aged "pain of men". MEN's audience was not just male, women seemed to be even more enthusiastic. The film's reflection was realistic yet romantic, truly quite a "surprise". Reportedly Francis Ng Chun Yu liked the script so much that he did not negotiate his salary. Of course it was an important show of support, he and Poon Chan Leung's exciting performance glared off each other as they brought back the "guy" flavor that has been missing in Hong Kong film in years. Actually the story did not have to be about successful people to move people. People would also be able to relate to the helplessness of life. Another even smaller production was the First Feature Film Initiative's student division winner Oliver Chan Siu Kuen directed STILL HUMAN (LUN LOK YUN). Because its budget was only HK$ 3.25 million, lead actor Anthony Wong Chau Sun after completing the film still did not receive a cent. STILL probably has not been released officially yet, but its special screenings at the end of the year already made a splash. Some film critics felt that it was the best movie of last year. STILL's leads were not successful people, one was old and alone and the other left home to work as a maid in Hong Kong. Yet both were "still human". As a new director, Chan Siu Keun's storytelling technique exceeded many elders, the entire film was warm yet entertaining. This year's Hong Kong Film Award Best New Director probably would be between Chan Wing Sun and Chan Siu Kuen. (STILL HUMAN just won the Film Critic Society's Best Screenplay award). The third was the American film SEARCHING, its budget was higher than the previous two but belonged in the low budget category in the U.S. Withou any big star, it was a global hit. SEARCHING used a new production method as all cameras faced the computer to depict how a father used the internet to find his missing daughter. The audience was left breathless. The final one was the Japanese film ONE CUT OF THE DEAD, with the lowest budget of only HK$ 220,000. It performed decently around the world, which was quite surprising. ONE's different situation was not unique, like another Japanese film WELCOME BACK, MR. MCDONALD (1999). Yet most viewers might not know that, since the film was rich in entertainment they bought tickets to support it. From the aforementioned examples, movies are not just about big effects and big productions, even more important is whether the story can grab the heart of the audience. This has nothing to do with the size of the production. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Gum Doh Lit : Golden Cty d. Five up and coming Taiwanese directors each offer their own take in answering this question. In 2028, Taiwan is suffering from nuclear waste ("The Can of Anido"), migrant workers ("942"), industrial collapse ("Way Home"), low birth rates and diversity in families ("A Making-Of"), and insomnia ("The Sleep"). These destructive issues are the results of our present day. One man's old wounds return as environmental pollution disrupts societal relationships, blowing back as an attack on mankind. The film asks, how did things get this bad? And it asks once more, are these problems exclusive to Taiwan ten years from now? Of the five films, only "A Making Of" has a happy ending. The film is a part of the "10 Years" series being made throughout Asia. It began in 2015 in Hong Kong, and was followed by Ten Years Japan, Ten Years Thailand, and now, Ten Years Taiwan. Each director predicts a different "Taiwan in Ten Years", but every one of them is a summons for us in the present day. Together they created lots of unforgettable moments that were captured in this documentary: The cheeky drummer Jun Kung scared people around with his creepy mask during the recording; The pianist Anthony Sun was so excited that he broke his elbow during the show; Backing vocalists recollected how frequently Eason apologized to them during the tour; Eason also shared that he was deemed as the lead vocalist of the band, the band members just treated him like everyone else and all had an enjoyable time together. This two-hour documentary is all about capturing and sharing the loving memories of the DUO band with the audience. Hope all of you can feel the "L.O.V.E." of eason and the duo band. Opening January 31 2019 Trailer : https://youtu.be/qe_oUETtjTM [ BROADWAY CIRCUIT ] Morikazu Kumagai (aka Mori) was born in 1880 and became one of Japan's most celebrated 20th-century painters. His gift for painting was recognized very early on in his career but the opinions of critics and fame were never his priority. His sporadic output didn't result in sales. He didn't own a house and survived with friends' help until the age of 50 when his paintings began to sell and he could at last support his family. The Emperor was full of admiration for a Kumagai painting he saw at the prestigious Nika Art Exhibition. This brought recognition to Kumagai who was known as the "hermetic sage with a paintbrush" but Kumagai twice turned down the Emperor's Japanese order of Culture award. The reason he gave for declining these awards was that he was already receiving too many visitors. True to his reclusive nature, he barely left his 60-square-meter home for 30 years. He didn't have to because he observed animals and plants in his little garden. This movie is based on an actual account; it depicts one day in his twilight years when he never left home. His latest, Burning (2018)—his first film in eight years—is an unsettling, puzzling psycho-thriller that has gained unanimous praise from critics and has topped numerous best-of lists. A celebrated literary figure in South Korea whose fiction earned him accolades well before his foray into cinema, Lee writes and directs harrowing tales that place his characters in extreme psychological and physical agony to test the limits of the human spirit. An elderly woman at the onset of Alzheimer’s confronts her grandchild's utter indifference to morality in Poetry (2010); a single mother endures a cascade of tragedies in Secret Sunshine (2007); a man suffers the forces of South Korea's tumultuous history in Peppermint Candy (1999). His tightly structured plotlines deliver unflinching exposés of pain, trauma, and rage. He appears to follow conventional genre tropes, from melodrama to noir and gangster flicks, only to subvert audience expectations with exceptionally complex stories that leave them to contemplate perplexing existential, spiritual, and moral questions. Lee was born in Daegu in 1954 to a leftist family. He hoped to become a painter at a young age but made a name for himself in the theater and literary worlds. He was almost 40 when he turned to filmmaking, beginning as a screenwriter and assistant director for Park Kwang-su, a key figure of the Korean New Wave of the late 1980s and 1990s. Between making Oasis (2002) and Secret Sunshine (2007), from 2003 to 2004, Lee served as South Korea’s Minister of Culture and Tourism. This retrospective includes all six films written and directed by Lee. Organized by La Frances Hui, Associate Curator, Department of Film. Special thanks to Lee Joon-dong, Now Film, Korean Film Archive, CJ Entertainment, Finecut Co.
