Wang Qianyuan, Michelle Wai Sze Nga and Jessie Li (Chun Xia). The production began in November in Jiangmen and officially announced its wrap two days ago after over two months. The film concept poster was released. Ng Yin Cho and Wang Qianyuan's faces were hidden behind roughly made masks. The team spent over a quarter of the production after midnight. Director Lau Ho Leung was extremely demanding for real action, as Ng Yin Cho and Wang Qianyuan were almost injured several times because their fighting was too real. In the intimate stills, retro sets and costumes reminded people of the 80s and the 90s. The team shot in 5 cities like Jiangmen and Zhongshan, each set was newly constructed or renovated. The shoot used 48 prop guns, 6243 blanks, 4312 reaction bullets. The crew pointed out that on the set everyday gunshots were deafening, just like a real robbery. * (2019/01/16) Eddie Cheung Siu Fai yesterday attended an event. Brother Fai revealed that he hoped to pass on the Lunar New Year traditions to the next generation so he and his children would make radish cakes with his grandmother. He also would teach them Lunar New Year well wishes. Speaking of director Ringo Lam Lan Tung's memorial that will take place on the 26th, Brother Fai tearfully said that because earlier he took a job he would not be able to send Director Lam on his last journey. However he would remember his advice to heart. He recalled when they made SKY ON FIRE (CHUNG TIN FOR), he only spent a dozen or so days with Director Lam but he already had deep conversations with him like a parent. He was also the first director to teach him acting. "Many feel that Director Lam was strict and mean, but actually he was very funny and humorous. Only he was super, super serious at work, he would ask us to perform getting hit or car crash for real. I originally planned to meet him for dinner for my new series finished its shoot, but he left so suddenly!" * (2019/01/16) Soon to join the production of HOI SEUNG GAU WOON (SEA RESCUE) Carlos Chan Ka Lok would play a lifeguard. However he was not a great swimmer and thus he took lessons with a coach. Reporters said that Jeannie Chan Ying was a great swimmer. He said that he has not asked her. earlier when he made Dante Lam Chiu Yin's film TO THE FORE (POR FUNG) he broke his leg on the bicycle. Would he be more careful this time? He said that people around him were worried. Was Chan Ying worried? He said, "My parents and co-workers, because they experienced it with me they would ask me to be a little more careful and not to tough it ou!" As for rescue at sea, he also had to dive. However due to the diving suit he did not need to work out. * (2019/01/16) Stephen Chow Sing Chi's new film THE NEW KING OF COMEDY brought back together the golden team of Chow Sing Chi and Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi, only from on camera o off. Yesterday's "Wan Tin Sau" has become the director and invited "Lau Piu Piu" Pak Chi to provide her voice to the film. Sing Yeh admitted that if he had to make KING OF COMEDY, Cheung Pak Chi was naturally the only choice. She said, "He is still very young, not as weathered as I would imagine directors would be." When asked why he invited Pak Chi to provide her voice to the film, Sing Yeh said, "We are making KING OF COMEDY! If I don't ask her, I don't know who I would ask." Sing Yeh has countless classic films. This time he shot KING OF COMEDY with a new story. Pak Chi felt that this was a great choice. She explained, "Most people felt that Chow Sing Chi was comedy. How many 20 years does a lifetime have, make what you want to make!" * (2019/01/15) The Lunar New Year film MISSBEHAVIOR (GUNG HEI BAK POR) yesterday released its music video production special. Four members of the bitch group Isabel Chan Yat Ning, DaDa Chan Jing, Yanki Din (Ting Ho Yan) and June Lam Siu Ha had great chemistry. In 3 inch heels DaDa had no difficulty at all. With his many scenes with DaDa, Hou Dee stuck to her like glue during the studio recording and the music video production. She told the audience to keep an eye on their spark. Hanjin Tan (Chan Woon Yan) complained that he did not have a chance to show off his muscles. This time he appeared in a tank top. Director Pang Ho Cheung thanked the crew and the cast for their help on this Lunar New Year song. He happily said, "The audience starting this year will have an all new Lunar New Year song that belongs to Hong Kong." * (2019/01/15) The Lunar New Year film A LIFETIME TREASURE (YU JU YU BO) is Andrew Lam Man Chung's directing debut. Ah Chung with all his ideas even participated in screenwriting and acting in the new film, as he worked both on and off screen. He ended up not being able to sleep before the release! Since it was his firs movie baby, Ah Chung this time had to play several generations of ancestors. He had to play his great great great great grandfather and great great great great grandmother. As a woman Ah Chung truly was convincing. He deliberately made a sexy and cute pose, really was even more woman than a real woman. At the costume fitting, Ah Chung spent most of the day and tried ten looks. After the nursing home chief look he tried the great great great great grandparents costumes, and he did not forget to mess around nonsensically. Messing around with the ancestors, Ah Chung said, "Actually I only did it because it is necessary, as my own ancestors of course I would bear the most resemblance!" * (2019/01/15) Alex Fong Lik Sun, who has not released music in awhile, earlier worked on a hilarious musical number for his friend Wong Cho Lam's directing debut, the Lunar New Year film I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERECT, NOW CHANGE! (NEI MAI LEI, NGOR OI NEI!). Also on hand was Siu Fong's "certified girlfriend" in recent years, Ivana Wong Yuen Chi. After KIDNAP DING DING DON (BONG GA DING DING DONG) and A BEAUTIFUL MOMENT (NGOR DIK CHING DIK NUI SAI) they played a couple for a third time. In the scene Fong Lik Sun and Wong Yuen Chi were in the "awkward stage" as they went on a movie date. Siu Fong "without any choice" went to see least favorite genre of great tragedy. A firm believer in boys don't cry, Siu Fong originally was uncomfortable at the cinema. In the story after influence from the plot and Wong Yuen Chi he broke down and said, "I'm done for"; Wong Yuen Chi in order to create the intense effect improvised many extremely exaggerated "sad" expressions. Her "quivering lips" even successfully made the director and all the workers laugh every time they saw them; because of their outstanding performance their segment would open the film. Later they said that singing this time was even more exhausting than normal. Siu Fong even revealed that he was all wet. "Because my co-star is Wong Yuen Chi, I of course have a lot of pressure. She is known for being a great singer. In addition Cho Lam in the demo sang very outstandingly. In order no to disappoint them, I truly have to give my all to sing. I ended up all wet from singing." Yuen Chi praised Fong Lik Sun's musical singing was very outstanding and eye opening for her. "I think the song in the movie can become our couple tour duet. Siu Fong truly sings very, very, very, very well." * (2019/01/15) The 25th Hong Kong Film Critic Society Award winners were announced yesterday. After 16 years Anthony Wong Chau Sun with STILL HUMAN (LUN LOK YUN) won his third Best Actor award. Chau Sun was surprised to win again. He joked, "Yesterday I was cleaning up around the house, I even cleaned the two awards. At the time I thought it would be good to have another one, then the dream came true! I have to thank the most director (Oliver) Chan Siu Kuen for her numerous contributions to the film. I hope the award would be able to help the movie a little and bring in even more viewers." Was he confident about winning the Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor again? He said, "I will treat it normally, it doesn't matter whether I win or not! If I do I do, if I don't then I don't!" Chau Sun also said that he might take the team to dinner to celebrate. He said that through this award he hoped to let the government know that Hong Kong film is worthy of financial assistance and support. He hoped that the government would provide a little more financial assistance. He said, "Now it truly is lacking. The government can't see that many are working on a volunteer basis. If I took a salary, the film wouldn't have been made. The current financial assistance to the film industry truly makes motivating the Hong Kong film industry difficult." After 3 rounds of voting, Wong Chau Sun with STILL HUMAN won Best Actor. It was his third after BEAST COPS in 1998 and INFERNAL AFFAIRS in 2002. The Society said that Chau Sun's portrayal of the character received the recognition of most of the jury, crushing PROJECT GUTENBERG's Chow Yun Fat, MEN ON THE DRAGON's Poon Chan Leung and Francis Ng Chun Yu, TRACEY's Ben Yuen Fu Wa and Philip Keung Ho Man for this year's Hong Kong Film Critic Society Award Best Actor. STILL HUMAN also won Best Screenplay. The film THREE HUSBANDS also took home three major awards, including Best Film, Best Director for Fruit Chan Gor and Best Actress for Chloe Maayan. The Mainland actress said, "Thank you to the Hong Kong Film Critic Society for the recognition and the encouragement. Thank you to Director Chan Gor for this opportunity. This film is my first lead role. It is a very memorable experience and growth. I like Hong Kong, thank you everyone. I look forward to seeing everyone on the day of the presentation!" The Film Critic Society recommended 5 films, including STILL HUMAN, G AFFAIRS, I'VE GOT THE BLUES, A FAMILY TOUR and PROJECT GUTENBERG. THE 25TH HONG KONG FILM CRITIC SOCIETY AWARDS https://www.filmcritics.org.hk/ BEST FILM: THREE HUSBANDS BEST DIRECTOR: Fruit Chan (THREE HUSBANDS) BEST SCREENPLAY: Oliver Chan (STILL HUMAN) BEST ACTOR: Anthony Wong (STILL HUMAN) BEST ACTRESS: Chloe Maayan (THREE HUSBANDS) RECOMMENDED FILMS: STILL HUMAN, THE G AFFAIR, I'VE GOT THE BLUES, A FAMILY TOUR, PROJECT GUTENBERG * (2019/01/14) Francis Ng Chun Yu, Anita Yuen Wing Yi, Cheung Tat Ming starred in the comedy A HOME WITH A VIEW (GA WOR MAN SI GAING) yesterday held a Guangzhou premiere press conference. One of the leads Louis Koo Tin Lok was absent so the event prepared for cardboard cut out of Goo Jai for everyone to take photos with. The film was adapted on Cheung Tat Ming's award winning play. Tat Ming said that the play became a film completely because of Chun Yu. After he read the script he said "fine". "He even asked me if he would be the lead actor, I said I already expected him to be. He then told me to be his old man too." Tat Ming thanked Chun Yu for helping him a lot and even introducing him to Chow Yun Fat. They went running together, which made he much healthier than before. Sam Lee Chan Sam, Kingdom Yuen King Tan, Wu Fung, Yeung Yuk Mui and Tyson all sent videos to support Tat Ming, and he felt very touched. When everyone shared their troubles, Chun Yu and Len Len took jabs at each other. Len Len pointed out that Chun Yu's biggest trouble was "too handsome", and Chun Yu said that Len Len was the most troubled with having a home that was so big she had to take a taxi from the bedroom to the bathroom. Len Len responded, "At my house we used golf carts, not taxis." When playing games, Chun Yu played tricks on Len Len. He wrote her letter to her husband, "I wish you are just like a pig". He wrote in his own letter, "In the past, Feynman spent a lot of his own money. In he New Year, I hope my son can get rich overnight and find work soon." Len Len hoped that her husband Julian Cheung Chi Lam could lose a lot of weight so she could have both money and the man. They kept creating comedy. During the photos they tried to steal the spotlight with cute poses. Chun Yu and Len Len said that they have not worked with each other for a very long time, but Chun Yu often worked with Cheung Chi Lam. Len Len said, "I constantly visited their sets." Len Len also revealed that she played a housewife in the film so she needed to be plumper, but She did not deliberately gain weight. She was fine with not losing weight. Speaking of the Lunar New Year, Len Len revealed that she will spend it overseas but kept the destination confidential. Chun Yu will likely spend the New Year at work because a movie might shoot into the Lunar New Year. Len Len asked Chun Yu if his pay will be doubled for working on the Lunar New Year, Chun Yu pretended to be serious and said, "I support Hong Kong film, it have to be triple pay because this is a very important holiday in Hong Kong. The Mainland pays by the month so working on holiday is the same, without double or triple pay." Tat Ming said that this film came to be only because of Chun Yu. Chun Yu said that investors had to like to this concept first. He read the script for 10 years, the play released a video and a book. He felt that this film was forever. Herman Yau Lai To said that 20 years ago he already read this script and looked for investors, but due to different factors it did not come about. In recent years everyone learned that Tat Ming wanted to make movies again after getting sick. Both Hong Kong and Mainland had housing problems, so he adapted this film. Speaking of his film NEW KING OF COMEDY in the earlier released trailer was marked as "Stephen Chow directed film". He said that he and Chow Sing Chi had a very pleasant work experience but declined to respond to the report. "I make so many movies in a year, I can't work for Company B on Company A's resources. This is professional ethics, so sorry." * (2019/01/13) The final music award show of 2018, the 2018 TVB JADE SOLID GOLD AWARDS took place last night. Summing up the 2018 music report cards, Cheung King Hin won 4 Chinese Gold Song awards, 3 Ultimate awards, 3 Metro Hit awards and 5.5 Solid Gold Awards for 15.5 awards to become the year's ultimate winner. Absent from Solid Gold, Kay Tse On Kay won 3 Chinese Gold Song awards, 3.5 Ultimate Awards, 2 Metro Hit awards for 8.5 awards in a decent showing. Also absent, Joey Yung Cho Yee retreated from the front line this year with only half a Solid Gold Advertising song, with Chinese Gold Song, Ultimate award she won 2.5 awards. Shiga Lin last year switched company to the Voice Entertainment Group. She was very happy to be able to participate in Solid Gold for the first time. Because her former record company had royalty problems she was unable to attend Solid Gold, she was very happy to see her colleagues last night. Speaking of the new company already having two top divas in Hana Kuk Chi Kiu and Jinny Ng Yeuk Hei, she said, "I am Sister Lin, responsible for coffee and tea." However she admitted that after switching to a new company she had a lot of new challenges. Most recently she worked with Priscilla Wong Chui Yu and Frankie Lam Man Lung on a series, like a newcomer she had new joy. However this year she would focus on singing and hoped to sing with two divas on a song about what girls feel. James Ng Yip Kwan will perform at the HK Coliseum in April, with which he hoped to thank the fans for their support. However he admitted that he worried about ticket sales because many singers would perform ahead of his date, he still hoped that fans would support him with their lucky money. Lately he has been working out. Brother Kwan said that he wanted to show off his muscles at the concert. Because last time he only wore a fake muscle suit, this time he hoped to be able to show two of his three points to everyone. Alfred Hui Ting Hung joked about not wearing underwear for the concert, Brother Kwan reacted, "What, going that far? He really opened my eyes! I will have to study him then, right now I am threatening him with my two points." However he felt that the most important was for the clothes to look good and feel comfortable. Kristel Tin Yui Nei received the Outstanding Performance Gold Prize. She was surprised when she accepted her award. "Wow, I am very surprised, I am very happy but my performance isn't outstanding. Only the promotional colleagues are outstanding. I put in the least effort. I will work even harder, I hope I can come again next year." Bronze prize winner Sukie Shek Wing Lei thanked her husband Patrick Tang Kn Won for encouraging her to become a singer again after 15 years. Ng Yeuk Hei with two gold songs said that she returned to Solid Gold after resting for awhile. When she thanked her record company team, host Mak Mei Yan pointed at her husband in the audience. She then finally said, "Thank you Mr. Ho Siu Hung!" Wong Chee Hynn and dR.X led 18 new artists in a group rap. The singers rehearsed two weeks for this performance. Then Wu Fung and Nancy Sit Ka Ying rapped and presented the new artist award. Ally Tse Man Yan cried during her acceptance. 46 awards were presented throughout the evening, this year the Popularity King, the Most Popular Online Singer, the Most Improved and Solid Gold Record Sales awards were added. 2018 TVB JADE SOLID GOLD AWARDS SOLID GOLD SONGS UTOPIA (Pakho Chau) FAR BEYOND REACH (Hubert Wu) BEHIND A MAN (Pakho Chau) TOO HARD O START (Hubert Wu) YOU LEFT WITH MY YOUTH (JW) WITH YOU (Kayee Tam) PIGGY BACK (Vincy Chan) NO REGRET NO SHAME (Nancy Wu) MOTH TO THE FLAME (Hana Kuk) DISTRACTED (James Ng) ONLY WANT TO BE WITH YOU AGAIN (Hana Kuk) FEARLESS SHOULDER (Fred Cheng) LACKING (Hins Cheung) TOLERATE (Mag Lam) GENIUS CHILDREN 1985 (Hins Cheung) SHOW OFF (Ken Hung) UNSETTLED SEASONS (Jinny Ng) MAY PEOPLE ENDURE (Hana Kuk) NEVER REMEMBER AGAIN (Jinny Ng) CENTENNIAL TREE (Hins Cheung) SOLID GOLD GOLD SONG: CENTENNIAL TREE (Hins Cheung) MOST POPULAR FEMALE SINGER: Hana Kuk MOST POPULAR MALE SINGER: Hins Cheung BEST PERFORMANCE FEMALE SINGER: Jinny Ng BEST PERFORMANCE MALE SINGER: Hubert Wu MOST POPULAR ONLINE SINGER: Hana Kuk POPULARITY KING: Pakho Chau MOST POPULAR NEW ARTIST: Joey Thye, Tsang Lok Tung, Ally Tse OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE: GOLD: Kristel Tin SILVER: Kayee Tam BRONZE: Sukie S MOST IMPROVED: GOLD: Angela Hui SILVER: Alvin Ng BRONZE: Hoffman Cheng BEST BAND: Supper Moment BEST DANCE GROUP: Super Girls BEST STAGE PERFORMANCE: HAPPY FESTIVAL (Sherman Chung) BEST ADVERTISING SONG: 5 MAKE A BEAT (Joey Yung, Hins Cheung) BEST DUET: THE WOMAN BEHIND (Miriam Yeung, Pakho Chau) SOLID GOLD RECORD SALES : FORGETTNG MYSELF (Hana Kuk), I WAS HERE (Hubert Wu), C AGAIN (Cally Kwong), 15 FIFTEEN, Chan Kit Lai, THE HAT TRICK (Sukie S) * (2019/01/13) The Lunar New Year film MISSBEHAVIOR (GUNG HEI BAK POR)'s cast including DaDa Chan Jing, Jo Kuk Cho Lam, Tsui Tin Yau, Hanjin Tan (Chan Woon Yan), Susan Shaw Yam Yam yesterday promoted at a shopping center, played games with the audience and gave away prizes. Kuk Cho Lam revealed that in the film she played a kindergarten teacher, as Chan Jing was responsible for all the sexiness. Sister Yam Yam praised Chan Jing's great figure and jokingly volunteered to do her physical examination. Injuring her inner thigh during a film shoot and just returning from a holiday in Japan, Chan Jing said that her weight could easily fluctuate. Because she could not exercise due to the injury and she liked to eat, she gain weight. "I am not pregnant, already a nephew have been mistaken for my illegitimate child. I couldn't possibly have had her." Chan Jing hoped that she could do her best to lose weight before the premiere. Although her injury was almost healed she still could not exercise. Shaw Yam Yam seemed interested in her body and wanted to personally give her a physical. Chan Jing sad, "She can, Sister Yam Yam is very cute. I would be fine with helping her with hers too." Did she have to get a new clothes after the weight gain? Chan Jing said, "It's perfect, new clothes for the New Year. A good figure indeed has its benefits at work, but is troublesome for everyday clothes. I hope the result is good." Playing a kindergarten teacher, Siu Kuk said that she would do some very absurd things. Even as a mother she felt that she might have crossed the line, but the result was decent. * (2019/01/12) Stephen Chow Sing Chi's Lunar New Year film NEW KING OF COMEDY yesterday held its first Beijing press conference to promote the new film. The event even premiered NEW KING OF COMEDY's theme song music video GALE. Sing Yeh said that this time would be a remake of Danny Chan Pak Keung's classic hit, because this song once was an indelible song of inspiration in his show business career. In the past Chow Sing Chi's film would always have "Sing Girls", this time would be a limited girl group "Gale Girls". They opened the film promotion. One of the stars Wang Baoqiang also made an appearance. Performing the film theme song was a group of "Gale Girls" consisting of Candy Li Zixuan, Reyi Liu Renyu, Gao Yingxi, Judy Qi Yandi, Lu Xiaoyu and others. Sing Yeh revealed the reason that this limited girl group was formed. He explained, "I hope to be able to encourage a group of dream chasing minor figures. Even when facing the gale they can still bravely charge ahead." The completely "Post 90" "Gale Girls" were able to come in contact with Sing Yeh through this. They said, "He is like a big brother. He doesn't say much, but he always cares about everyone from him." Sing Yeh learned the choreography on the spot from this group of Post 90s Girls and demonstrated his king of comedy nature. This all new interpretation of GALE as the movie theme song actually was the memory of Sing Yeh's own struggles. When Sing Yeh was still an extra, whenever he was disillusioned he would listen to Chan Pak Keung's GALE to encourage himself not to give up and persist on. Thus Sing Yeh hoped with this song to deliver the KING OF COMEDY's "Gale Spirit" to encourage even more people. "Work hard and struggle, don't give up, believe in yourself, you are the king of comedy of your own life." Since the first teaser's release, many Sing fans and viewers were looking forward to what kind of surprise that THE NEW KING OF COMEDY would bring. Sing Yeh responded, "After twenty years, this film's ending had enormous changes. I hope this film can truly bring everyone encouragement and hope." As for many people's speculation that Wang Baoqiang would be the new "Wan Tin Sau", Sing Yeh denied that and said, "This film will have new surprises." * (2019/01/12) The film THE LADY IMPROPER (FEI FUN SHOOK NUI) was seen as another self challenging breakthrough film for Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin after SARA (CHOR GEI). Not only the Hong Kong audience is looking forward to it, many foreign film festivals are deeply interested in the subject of a woman from growing to transforming, proper to improper exploration. The first confirmed film festival will be the 12th Holland Asian Film Festival in March. THE LADY IMPROPER was selected as the closing film. Lead actress Ah Sa expressed her excitement. "I am very happy, I hope all the viewers would like THE LADY IMPROPER!" The film festival pointed out, "Holland Asian Film Festival has always promoted woman directors and films that reflected Asian women facing their own unique challenges, as well as provided an European market facing platform for new directors. The event's closing film choice also stresses this point, like the earlier THE GREAT BUDDHA+. THE LADY IMPROPER is the independent filmmakers Tsang Tsui Shan's five film, with the breakthrough performance that Choi Cheuk Yin brings. The film at the same time perfectly echoes this year's newly added Culinary Section, which helps with reminding visitors from everywhere Hong Kong's cafe culture, its unforgettable flavor and atmosphere." * (2019/01/12) The 13th Asian Film Award will take place on March 17th at the Tseung Kwan O Television City. Director Johnnie To Kei Fung, Oliver Chan Siu Guen, Jun Li Shek Chun and Sammi Cheng Sau Man announced the nominations yesterday. This year's Best Actor competition is rather fierce, with the Golden Horse Award winner Xu Zheng (DYING TO SURVIVE). However Kwok Fu Sing with his outstanding performance in PROJECT GUTENBERG also won the first Hainan International Film Festival Best Actor. In addition Korean star Yoo Ah-in (BURNING) and Japanese art Koji Yakusho (THE BLOOD OF WOLVES) should not be overlooked. Best Actor nominee Kwok Fu Sing said, "I am very happy to learn about the PROJECT GUTENBERG Asian Film Award Best Actor nomination. As an actor, I would put my heart into making each film performance great. Any nomination or award would be an encouragement. I hope to share all of the encouragement with the production team. Thank you Director (Felix) Chong Man Keung, Fat Gor and the entire PROJECT GUTENBERG team for your collective effort." The THREE HUSBANDS Best Actress nominee Chloe Maayan (Zeng Meihuizi) happily said, "I am particularly emotional and honored to be nominated for the Asian Film Award Best Actress. Here I would like to thank director Chan Gor for giving me the opportunity to perform. I also thank the jury's encouragement. This is my first Hong Kong film, which left me with a very unforgettable experience. I really like Hong Kong, I really like everyone. I look forward to see everyone on the day of the presentation. See you then!" Chan Gor was deeply elated with the Asian Film Award Best Director nomination. "Thank you everyone for your support. I want to give special thanks to lead actress Chloe Maayan, because without her THREE HUSBANDS probably wouldn't have been made into a movie!" Wai Ying Hung again with TRACEY was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Sister Hung said, "I am very happy, I was at work so the phone was on silent mode. When I turned it back on after work, the phone was ringing like last time with the Golden Horse Award nomination. I looked and I was nominated again. I am very happy, really very happy!" River Huang was rather surprised to learn about the Best Supporting Actor" nomination. "I am very honored to be able to participate in the TRACEY production. This nomination to me has special meaning, thank you very much to the jury for the recognition. At the same time I also congratulate Sister Hung for her Best Supporting Actor nomination. I am very happy, thank you!" Cheng Sau Man said that because she still has not seen many of the films, she had difficulty with saying which nominee she would support. however if she was in the jury she would treat it normally. Of course she would also support Hong Kong representatives and hoped that they would win for Hong Kong. She said, "This year I won't be a part of the glory. I will keep working hard. This isn't something that you get just because you want it, you have to treat it normally!" Sammi pointed out that last year she made four movies that still have not been released yet, but none were her usual 20 something romantic films. This year she also longed to make a romantic comedy, the best would be working with Young Fresh Meat. Who would she like to work with? Sammi said, "Too many, I am afraid I would be stuffed. However I personally prefer Korean guys. I may be a married woman, but eyes are made for looking. I like tall guys with single eyelid and muscles." Her husband Andy Hui Chi On met her criteria. Sammi joked, "The street are full of them, but if I would be able to work with a Korean star I would be very happy a work and personally. She stated that she was drawn to the story. Although she has not been in a Hong Kong film in years, she joked that after a second at work she was already caught up and even often changed channels to use Hong Kong slang. She felt very excited and very challenged, praising how much fun she had. She stated that she missed Hong Kong very much. After working on TVB programs she left Hong Kong and went to work in the Mainland. She said, "Many people said that I was already retired, actually no! Everyday I would never stop, I wouldn't stop for more than three days. As soon as I would I would get sick. I feel like I am a racecar, the more horsepower you give the further I go. If stopped then it would be done for." Tian Niu also thanked producer Sandy for thinking of her and inviting her to perform Actually before the production began, her role was not cast. Sandy happened to see a movie that she was in and realized that she was still active onscreen. Thus after discussing with director and screen writer Andrew Lam Man Chung she contacted her through online platform. She said, "She very sincerely sent me the story, but the first time that moved me wasn't Lam Man Chung or the salary. It was the principle of caring for the elderly because the subject was very suitable for the film. In addition it had tears within laughter. I understand how hard young people work, other than that they also have to show concern for their parents. A few words are already enough for their parents." Although she has not worked in a Hong Kong film in a long time, Tian Niu said that she caught up after a second at work. However the Hong Kong pace was truly too fast. She was used to the casual production pace of the Mainland, but for A LIFETIME TREASURE she had to follow the Hong Kong scene jumps and often had to change channel to speak Hong Kong slangs. She felt that was very exciting and very challenging and she had a lot of fun. Playing one of the nursing home residents, Tian Niu often had to dress up in the film. Yet she said in the real life she dressed very casually. She never expected to dress in bright colors and very elegantly everyday and even joked that she felt like a bird in a senior home. Speaking of becoming friend with Ivana Wong Yuen Chi after working with her for the first time, Tian Niu admitted that their relationship felt very strange. "She would really want to protect me, and send me messages to say that she really misses me. I believe that her every word was sincere. She would ask me a lot of personal questions, I would say I would just share my own experience with me for her to analyze for herself and then make her choice." * (2019/01/11) DaDa Chan Jing starred with Isabel Chan Yat Ning, Gigi Leung Wing Kei, June Lam Siu Ha, Tsui Tin Yau, Hanjin Tan (Chan Woon Yan), Lam Suet in the Lunar New Year film MISSBEHAVIOR (GUNG HEI BAK POR) will be released on January 31st. The film poster was officially released yesterday. DaDa curiously asked director Pang Ho Cheung about her character's name in the film. He answered, "All the ones with big busts are named Lin, like many in renovation are called Brother Fai, four eyes called Ah Ming, weaklings called Ah Keung, didn't you notice?" DaDa said, "No everyone with big busts are called Lin." The director said, "I feel in general it's not right for people with big busts to be without 'Lin', so your name is wrong." DaDa said, "So I should be called Chan Lin or Chan Jing Lin." * (2019/01/11) The Lunar New Year film INTEGRITY (LIM JING FUNG MO: YIM MOK) asked Hacken Lee Hak Kun to perform its theme song BURIED ALIVE. Lee Hak Kun stated that he felt the importance of the mission. "When I recorded before, as long as I was pleased the producer would accept it. This time is for a Lunar New Year film. I hope to be able to help with the promotion. The most important is for the director and the producer to accept the goods. Luckily during the recording they didn't come to supervise, otherwise the pressure would have been even greater!" Hacken knew Alan Mak Siu Fai's work as a director like the back of his hand. Hacken said, "I like the atmosphere and the tension Director Mak creates the most, everything comes very naturally so the audience can easily be in the midst of it; during the recording, I try to imagine the three leads in the film and explore their characters through music and sound." Did Hacken's acting bug act up? Hacken said, "Making movies is more than just asking for them. Whether an actor runs into a character, or a singer into a song, each time is an opportunity, destiny. I look forward to working with Director Mak as an actor very much, I can even play a tree, pedestrian A or the numerous cops, CIDs that are always in his movies. Does he have any random role for me to play?" Hacken has always played heroic characters with his positive image. Actually he would like to challenge dark and evil roles. "If I have to choose a character in INTEGRITY, I would like to play the killer the most. However I am afraid that I won't be too convincing. I would choose to be a key witness. Since it's 'key', it is an important character in the film but it doesn't have to have a lot of screen time. I would do a little for a lot of result!" Speaking of Hacken's offer, director Mak Siu Fai said, "I can consider it, with the right character I would ask him! Although Hacken has been in movies, they are still few and far between. He still has a lot of development potential acting wise." * (2019/01/11) Director Ringo Lam Lan Tung passed away on the 29th last month at the age of 63. Two nights ago a wake was held at Po Fook Hill. Friends like Chow Yun Fat and Johnnie To Kei Fung paid their respect. Yesterday morning To Kei Fung and his wife, Vincent Wan Yeung Ming and Soi Cheang Po Shui arrived to send their friend on his final journey. Around 9AM the funeral began. To Kei Fung's assistant came out and said, "I know that everyone has their assignments, please just take one photo. This is what Mrs. Lam wants. Thank you everyone!" Later several employees brought out three partitions to separate the media. After the ceremony ended, Lam Lan Tung's family left in the hearse and tour bus. The hearse was covered in white cloth, probably to keep the family from media exposure. Friends including To Kei Fung, Tsui Hark, John Shum Kin Fun and Sylvia Chang will hold a memorial on the 26th for friends to salute director Lam Lan Tung one last time. * (2019/01/10) The Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild earlier held the "Master Class in Film Directing 2018 commencement ceremony" and screened 10 graduation micro movies. Patrick Tam Yiu Man supported Hong Kong film new blood and performed in one of the graduating students' graduation film TIN CHUN MO CHEH. In it Ah Tam played a single father of a daughter, played by Wong Sze Nga. They were not the usual father and daughter. Ah Tam's excellent performance won high praises and applause from all the colleagues on hand and the film finally won the "2018 Most Popular Short Film". Ah Tam was very grateful for everyone's good review of the film. He said that unfortunately he had to work and was unable to attend the graduation ceremony. He was very happy for the team and commended all the films in competition as very high quality. Each student and each performance put in great effort. He was busy with his new film. In order to support the new generation in the film industry, he sacrificed his rest time. Ah Tam said, "The real goal is to promote new forces in film, seeing the students' dreams and effort Hong Kong film is full of hope." Ah Tam also praised his co-star Wong Sze Nga. "She and I worked together very pleasantly. Now before we got our marks, aside from learning our lines she was doing her homework. She really is a smart girl! Although Wong Sze Nga is just a little girl, when she and I work together we feel she is like a very experienced veteran. We were full of chemistry." * (2019/01/10) The Hong Kong Film Award winning director Ringo Lam Lan Tung suddenly passed away at his home at the end of last month at the age of 63. The news shocked the film industry. His family yesterday held services at Po Fook Hill. The funeral will take place today at 11PM. The family followed Director Lam's wishes with a low key, private, closed door funeral. At the hall was a photo of Lam Lan Tung in a suit, next to the white and pink roses and above was a banner that said "Forever Missed". Despite the family stating that no visit or floral arrangement would be necessary, many of Director Lam's friends like Wong Kar Wai, Eric Tsang Chi Wai, Shawn Yue Man Lok, Wayne Lai Yiu Cheung and his wife, Julian Cheung Chi Lam and his wife all sent floral arrangements. Director Johnnie To Kei Fung who took part in the funeral planning arrived around 4PM to help. When he arrived he looked solemn and entered the hall quickly. Around 6PM, a friend of Lam Lan Tung for many years, Chow Yun Fat and his wife arrived. Fat Gor saw the media and waved in acknowledgement. Fat Soh revealed that they just returned from working in Macau and were a little tired so they declined any interview. Fat Gor stayed for a hour and left with Fat Soh. When asked if Fat Gor would send his late friend off on his final journey this morning, he did not reply and left with his wife. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. TA KUNG PAO, JANUARY 10 2019, EAST AND WEST FILM DYING TO SURVIVE: CHARACTERS HAVE FLESH AND BLOOD From classic drama to modern film and television products, creators have found subjects from community news countless times. From couple suicide to crime, all the stories become ones that creators touched people's hearts with. In the end, real world is often more dramatic than drama. Basing creations on real stories cannot be more natural. From perspective, the Mainland film DYING TO SURVIVE can be said as a successful example that finds balance between business and intention. - HUNG KWONG DYING TO SURVIVE's so-called "medicine god" Cheng Yong originally was a little boss who sold Indian herbal oil. He not only had a failed marriage but also owed surgery fee for his seriously ill father. A leukemia patient asked him to purchase an imitation of the cancer fighting drug, so he would be able to survive despite not being able to afford the astronomical price (several tens of thousands a bottle). The patient also guaranteed that many patients like him would buy the drug from Cheng Yong. Cheng Yong bought the imitation drug from India but was unable to sell it. He had to rely on the leukemia patient circle to be able to get started. Several patients and Cheng Yong formed a small group that imported "fake drugs", not only helping others while helping him to shake off financial troubles. However, "fake drug" sales were not easy, the drug company and law enforcement agency's investigations and shots from competitors repeatedly left him and leukemia patients struggling...... Playing Cheng Yong, Xu Zheng starred in a serious of LOST IN films. This character more or less reminded people of entertainment blockbusters that were shot on location like LOST IN THAILAND. Only this time, dirty and chaotic India was not the stage for comedy or adventure but the source of life saving drug. Benevolence To Save People Cheng Yong and his group were all ordinary people with families, for example they included a single mother who pole danced to treat her ailing daughter, a middle aged man with a newborn son, leukemia pastor with a church full of leukemia patients and a blond youth who ran away from home. The cheap life saving drug brought them all together. Interestingly, their relationship was touch and go. The single mother was grateful to Cheng Yong and threw herself at him. He pulled himself back and did not further develop it. He even thought about quitting and cutting ties with them, but in the end he could not abandon these partners he originally got together with for profit. Finally, bringing Cheng Yong and them together was not already monetary gain but the benevolence of simply saving people's lives. For that, Cheng Yong had to pay the price of lawsuit and prison. The film's biggest conflict actually was between the imitation drug trafficker Cheng Yong and the representative of the Swiss drug company that sold the drug at an astronomical price. The writers and the director depicted the drug company representative rather negatively, an anything for money stereotype. From a creating dramatic effect angle this was understandable, although the problem became simply good and bad, rich and poor. It appeared to be a little naive. The drug in DYING TO SURVIVE was what Hong Kong medical term called "targeted therapy". This type of medicine often cost billions in U.S. dollars and years to develop. The drug factory during its exclusivity period had to make the cost back. (The drug's U.S. exclusivity would end in 2019.) A high price cannot be simply be understood as "heartless". Of course often times this type of high prices might be absorbed by free health service or insurance (the end credit mentioned that this drug has been added to the list), which could be considered a variation of using public resources to further scientific advancement. On the other hand, before India joined the World Trade Organization it was not included in the medicine exclusivity protection region. Thus the generic drug industry thrived and became a top selling "export production". Creation Has Original Form As a film that targeted entertaining the general public, DYING TO SURVIVE did not examine the problem in depth so creating negative characters could not be more natural or obvious. In the end, this film truly succeeded in brewing a successful character based on a real original figure. The protagonist in the story's original case was a patient who purchased drugs for other patients. He was arrested for violating financial laws but due to the pleads of many patients he was not prosecuted. In the film adaptation, the protagonist became a healthy normal person without leukemia. Without buying drugs to save himself, the protagonist became someone who initially took risks for profit but gradually rose to purely helping others as the story became a morality tale of self elevation. It had the typical three act play structure. Although the protagonist was blatantly too "noble" (only a little evil and a little bad), yet it was more solid than characters from those internet novels. This character had a struggle of human nature, which probably was another reason that the film was a big hit other than responding to the topic that the general public cared about. 2. TA KUNG PAO, JANUARY 10 2019, LIGHT SHADOW PATH REMEMBERING RINGO LAM After all it was thirty years ago, even Yip Hon Leung who released for PRISON ON FIRE and CITY ON FIRE records as a favor remembered FIGHT FOR HAPPINESS (WASTE FOR BREATH) incorrectly as PRISON's theme song. Actually it was CITY's theme song. At the time no one thought that the record would go double platinum, obviously Ringo Lam Lan Tung's instinct was very accurate. Thirty years later his passing also brought back memories of those songs for everyone. Some wrote online "With all the changes in the world, how can life be as expected!" (CITY ON FIRE lyrics) and some wrote "Hard to find a good friend who knows me in this life, understands my flaws and benefits and give appropriate advice." (SCHOOL ON FIRE lyrics) to remember Lam Lan Tung. Those ON FIRE films' theme songs were all Maria Cordero performed. "Ah Tung" also liked how powerful and wild her voice was, ignoring the fact that at the time she was not well known. "Ah Tung" also used the then not considered famous actor Roy Cheung Yiu Yeung and made him into the lead. Others without any film experiences at all like Ng Chi Hung and Wong Kwong Leung were heavily used. His guts and confidence at the time could be said as unrivaled. Lam Lan Tung was highly focused in his work. He kept smoking as he came up with ideas. Sometimes he unknowingly lit one before another was finished. During the shoot he was also very strict, the entire team did not dare to slack down. He was considered as one of the "Devil Director". Yet normally he was very friendly, especially unforgettable was his brilliant smile. In the 80s, film critics admired Lam Lan Tung's "art of violence". Yet some felt that he was close to the "sugar cane gang" class, excelling in creative tense scenes then "wild" release. Actually, friends who participated in creating or producing knew that "Ah Tung's" creations were not that simple. At the end of PRISON ON FIRE, Tony Leung Ka Fai's character was released from prison in a very touching scene. At the time Director Lam considered the opportunistic merger of that touching scene with the Chow Yun Fat played Ah Ching's return from the hospital, without changing the light tone of Ah Ching's appearance. After several discussions, that scene still remained. After SCHOOL ON FIRE, Lam Lan Tung, Chow Yun Fat, Nam Yin (Lam's brother) and Chow Kwok Chung formed the "Silver Medal Presentations", made movies like WILD SEARCH and REBEL FROM CHINA, then he independently went to Hollywood and made MAXIMUM RISK. My reunion with "Ah Tung" was for the 2007 TRIANGLE (TEET SAM GOK), the half a hour of the film that he made was extraordinarily dramatic in his hands. Several years later he made WILD CITY and SKY ON FIRE. A month ago I just ran into him. He said that he was working on a screenplay, which he would show me once he was done. Unfortunately, life was unexpected, "Ah Tung" quietly left much to the regret of all. Yet "Ah Tung's" professionalism and the "FIRE" he started would always remain in our hearts. - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Gum Doh Lit : Golden Cty d. Opening January 24 2019 [ BROADWAY CIRCUIT ] What will our lives be like 10 years from now? Five up and coming Taiwanese directors each offer their own take in answering this question. In 2028, Taiwan is suffering from nuclear waste ("The Can of Anido"), migrant workers ("942"), industrial collapse ("Way Home"), low birth rates and diversity in families ("A Making-Of"), and insomnia ("The Sleep"). These destructive issues are the results of our present day. One man's old wounds return as environmental pollution disrupts societal relationships, blowing back as an attack on mankind. The film asks, how did things get this bad? And it asks once more, are these problems exclusive to Taiwan ten years from now? Of the five films, only "A Making Of" has a happy ending. The film is a part of the "10 Years" series being made throughout Asia. It began in 2015 in Hong Kong, and was followed by Ten Years Japan, Ten Years Thailand, and now, Ten Years Taiwan. Each director predicts a different “Taiwan in Ten Years”, but every one of them is a summons for us in the present day. Opening January 31 2019 Trailer : https://youtu.be/qe_oUETtjTM [ BROADWAY CIRCUIT ] Morikazu Kumagai (aka Mori) was born in 1880 and became one of Japan's most celebrated 20th-century painters. His gift for painting was recognized very early on in his career but the opinions of critics and fame were never his priority. His sporadic output didn't result in sales. He didn't own a house and survived with friends' help until the age of 50 when his paintings began to sell and he could at last support his family. The Emperor was full of admiration for a Kumagai painting he saw at the prestigious Nika Art Exhibition. This brought recognition to Kumagai who was known as the "hermetic sage with a paintbrush" but Kumagai twice turned down the Emperor's Japanese order of Culture award. The reason he gave for declining these awards was that he was already receiving too many visitors. True to his reclusive nature, he barely left his 60-square-meter home for 30 years. He didn't have to because he observed animals and plants in his little garden. This movie is based on an actual account; it depicts one day in his twilight years when he never left home.
